Nuevas características de Gnome 2.24

Ya se han publicado las nuevas características que incorporará Gnome 2.24. Hay muchas características nuevas bien interesantes y también mejoras que parecen haber sido apuntadas previamente por ubuntu. Ya sabéis que Gnome se comprometió a publicar un nuevo escritorio cada 6 meses y, de hecho, esto se hace uno o dos meses antes de que salga la versión nueva de ubuntu. Estos y otros motivos nos indican que gnome y ubuntu cada día colaboran más fijando objetivos comunes y beneficiándose la una de la otra. Veamos las mejoras que más nos podrían gustar:

- Se va a mejorar la apariencia de gnome en general, eliminando iconos que ya no se utilizan, añadiendo un set de iconos de 256x256 pixels y añadiendo un tema para pantallas pequeñas, fondos de escritorio, etc.
- Mejora de Cheese, la aplicación para tomar fotos o vídeos a través de la webcam.
- Deskbar: soporte para firefox3, mejor soporte para del.icio.us, facilidad para bajarnos nuevas plugins de internet.
- Evince incorpora barra de progreso para cuando abrimos documentos de la web y al imprimir.
- Epiphany web browser migrará a WebKit. Como sabes, WebKit es el motor que utiliza Safari, el navegador de Mac. Con esto dispondremos del mismo motor en Linux, lo que facilitará a los desarrolladores a tener una idea de cómo se ven las páginas en Mac, además de proveer al usuario de una alternativa más a Firefox y Opera.
- Evolution mejora, añadiendo soporte para exchange 2007.
- Eye of Gnome, la fantástica aplicación para ver imágenes de gnome añade algunas mejoras, incluídas de rendimiento.
- Mejor integración con Pulse Audio, un sistema avanzado de sonido para Linux que ya incorpora ubuntu Hardy Heron.
- Dictionary soportará la wikipedia.
- Mejora de la captura de pantalla (screenshot).
- Mejor integración con Compiz
- Nautilus: vista columna, interface por pestañas.
- Mejoras en soundjuicer (extractor cd audio), tomboy notes (post-it), totem movie player, escritorio remoto (vinagre), zenity.

Para la 2.26 se añadirán opciones de configuración de la barra de Nautilus, se mostrará el mixer de PulseAudio en lugar del mixer de gnome, mejoras en la administración de energía...

Todo esto nos hace ver que gnome tiene una evolución muy buena, aunque sinceramente nos gustaría que fuese más rápida, o al menos se tuviera ya en el horizonte un gnome 3.0, con un lavado de cara de aspecto, que va a requerir de un fuerte esfuerzo. Aún con todo nos parecen muy bien todas las mejoras, en especial las que suponen un paso más en la configuración de gnome, aspecto en el que creemos gnome cojea un poco.

GNOME 2.22.2, secondo update del ramo 2.22

Ieri è stato rilasciato GNOME 2.22.2, il penultimo aggiornamento del ramo 2.22 del famoso Desktop Environment. L'uscita di GNOME 2.22.3 è attesa per il 30 giugno 2008, mentre in settembre uscirà la versione 2.24, che promette tante interessanti novità come il passaggio del web browser Epiphany al WebKit engine (lo stesso usato da Safari). Per quanto riguarda GNOME 2.22.2, non ci sono grossi cambiamenti. Il team si è concentrato sopratutto sulla documentazione e sulle varie traduzioni. Il secondo aggiornamento alla versione 2.22, che tra l'altro è stata dedicata a Raphael Higino, un membro dello GNOME translation team e di GNOME Brazil, morto a 24 anni in un incidente motociclistico, è servito a rendere ancor più solido il ramo stabile del DE. Anche questa volta Foresight ha seguito, con puntualità impressionante, il ciclo di rilascio di GNOME, e a poche ore dall'uscita di GNOME 2.22.2, era già disponibile Foresight 2.0.2 GNOME Edition che lo integra.

Per installare la nuova versione di GNOME dai sorgenti, gli sviluppatori, consigliano di utilizzare uno strumento di compilazione. GARNOME, basato sul "GAR ports system" creato da Nick Moffitt, scarica, compila e installa GNOME, dall'ultima tar ball rilasciata (questo è il manuale). Altrimenti si può scegliere di usare jhbuild, che è stato progettato per compilare GNOME direttamente da SVN.

Leido en Mancomun que está convocado un concurso para escoger los fondos de escritorio que irán por defecto en la nueva versión de Gnome 2.24

Quien quiera participar tiene todavía 16 días para enviarlo, el plazo finaliza el día 23 de Mayo y deberá enviarlo desde la página GNOME Wallpaper Contest

Las condiciones son:
* Se pueden enviar tantos fondos de escritorio como se quiera. Si se mandan con distintas resoluciones de la misma imagen se sugiere que las envian comprimidas en un fichero zip/tar.

* Poner solo un nombre a los ficheros, del modo siguiente: fondo-1920x1200.png, fondo-1280x1024.jpg e así...

* El nombre y la dirección de correo debén ser "válidos" pues se usarán como método de identificación.

* Todos los fondos deberán tener licenza GPL.

* El tamaño de la imagen no superará los 2 MB.

* Se puede usar cualquier tipo de imagen, 3D, vectorial,fotos o mapas de píxels.

* Resolución mínima de 1280x1024, se prefiere 1920x1200.

* Extensiones aceptadas: jpg jpeg png svg svgz (tar.)bz2 (tar.)gz zip.

* Como el servidor no tiene ilimitado ancho de banda, los organizadores piden: que se utilice el sentido común cuando se envien imágenes. "Fundamentalmente trate este servidor de telecarga como si fuera propio y respételo".
