Linear and painterly - I borrow these terms from Heinrich Wölfflin's Principles of Art History. In simple words, the first one refers to using lines to define the limits of the form, and the latter to using masses of light and shadow, colors and shades to create an image. Two very different ways of defining form. 

I really like lines. Painters often say that lines do not exist in real life to criticize drawings, but I think it sounds like a compliment. I find it very interesting to "think" of a drawing. The visual representation is very interesting, as it is really different than what you see but still makes sense. Anyways (...) lines are just awesome.

In painting class, a few years ago, my teacher used to insist a lot for me to be more painterly on his works. That is, using less lines, using a different kind of solution when painting. Soon I realized class was not on "oil painting" per se, but about this painterly way of constructing an image. (Not that he would ever mention it directly) But me, I'm a rebel. I didn't do it. At the end of the semester, students would show their works and not only have i presented a watercolor animation (drawings and paint, in a linear fashion), but I also criticized the lack of lines on my colleagues' paintings. 

Only some time later when painting on the computer I began to develop the idea of using masses (as opposed to outlines) to define form. This may seem a bit simple as it is easy to explain, but executing it is not so natural. After a while creating images by line drawing, it's hard to find the solutions painting. Imagine that you had an idea for an image... let's say... a penguin looking at a sunset. For one who is accostumed to the drawing mindset, it's tempting to "draw" the eye by making the delineation. But you have to get a grip on yourself, and make that eye in a different manner... perhaps you could use a drop or a stain to achieve that shape of an eye in a more painterly way.

For me, starting to create images painterly was not natural at all. Plus it was really frustrating because Ialready had an expectative based on my linear drawings - I'd want my painterly work to be as good as if I had done it with lines. Thankfully, these difficulties with painting are much less of an annoyance now that I'm accostumed. Problem is I've grown too much accostumed to it, in a way that now drawing is the harder. So, I just gotta learn to draw again. Lines are too cool to be left behind. They are very useful - somethings are simply better in drawings.

It just feels a little strange walking on two opposite directions at the same time.

Dois jeitos bem diferentes de se definir forma.

Eu gosto muito de linhas. Alguns pintores dizem que "linhas não existem na vida real" para debochar de desenhos, mas isso parece-me um elogio. Acho muito interessante "pensar" um desenho - a representação visual é muito interessante já que ela é diferente do que você enxerga, e ainda assim faz sentido. Enfim (...) linhas são muito legais.

Na aula de pintura, uns anos atrás, meu professor insistia bastante comigo para que eu fosse mais pictórico para os trabalhos dele. Isso é, usasse menos linhas, menos contornos, tivesse um tipo de solução diferente para as imagens. Logo percebi que a aula não era sobre "tinta a óleo" - era sobre esse jeito de construir a imagem. (Não que ele tenha mencionado isso diretamente) Mas eu sou rebelde. No final do semestre, os estudantes exibem seus trabalho - e não apenas eu tinha apresentado uma animação em aquarelas (desenhos e tinta, à moda linear), mas eu também critiquei a falta de linhas nas pinturas dos meus colegas.

Só algum tempo depois, pintando no computador que eu comecei a desenvolver a idéia de usar massas (ao contrário de linhas) para definir forma. Pode parecer simples já que é fácil de explicar, mas executar não é tão natural. Depois de um tempo criando imagens desenhando com linhas é difícil encontrar as soluções na pintura. Imagine que você tem uma idéia para um desenho... algo como um pinguim olhando para um por-do-sol. Para os que estão acostumados com desenhos, é tentador desenhar o contorno do olho. Mas você tem que se segurar, e fazer o olho de um jeito diferente... talvez usando uma gota ou mancha para conseguir a forma de um olho - mas de uma maneira mais pictórica.

Para mim, começar a criar imagens pictoricamente não era nem um pouco natural. Além disso, era realmente frustrante pq eu já tinha uma expectativa de resultado baseada nos meus desenhos lineares - eu queria que meus trabalhos pictóricos fossem tão bons quanto eles seriam se eu tivesse os feito com linhas. Felizmente, essas dificuldades com pintura são muito menos irrittantes agora que eu já acostumei. O problema é que eu fiquei mal-acostumado e agora desenhar tem se tornado difícil. Então eu tenho que aprender a desenhar de novo. Linhas são muito legais para serem deixadas de lado. São muito úteis também - algumas coisas são simplesmente melhores em desenho.

Só é meio estranho andar em duas direções opostas ao mesmo tempo.

Back in July, Bank of America bought Countrywide Mortgages and announced today that they have implemented a program to help keep these struggling homeowners in their homes.  Countrywide was a high risk player and one of the first to buckle under bad judgement and questionable business management. (that may be me editorializing!)

Bank of America starts a new program December 1, 2008 called the Home Retention Program which could potentially help some 400,000 customers modify their loans in a meaningful, stay in your home kind of way.  You can check it out at www.bankofamerica.com .  This kind of thinking is what the world has been waiting for...instead of bailing out greed, Bank of America is going straight to Main Street and facilitating real and immediate change.

This is a "Bail-Out" I can get behind!  This type of reconsideration has the potential of changing the housing market in a very real way by stopping foreclosures and keeping properties out of inventory.  Less inventory, certainly less fire sale inventory, will improve the housing conditions for all homeowners, especially those paying their mortgages

Thank you Bank of America for giving me something positive to say!  I appreciate you leading the charge and hopefully setting the standard that will make others look positively foolish if they do not follow suit.  Furthermore, thank you for caring about the people you serve.  I hope this proves to be the smartest, most profitable, compassionate decision you have ever made.

San Ignacio es una localidad y municipio argentino ubicada en la provincia de Misiones, a menos de 3 kilómetros de la margen derecha del río Paraná. Es la cabecera del departamento San Ignacio, al sur de la provincia.

On the eve of September 28, 1941, Boston Red Sox great Ted Williams had a tough decision to make.  It was the night before the final day of the season...and one of the most memorable seasons ever in baseball.  A young Yankee star named Joe Dimaggio had gotten a hit in 56 straight games.  Dick Wakefield had received an unbelievable $52,000 to play for the Tigers.  Jimmie Foxx had driven in 100 runs...for the 13th consecutive year.  A pitcher named Feller won 25 games.  And batting helmets made their first appearance.

And then there was Williams, whose season was one for the ages.  Heading into the final day of play, Williams' average sat at .39955, which rounds to .400, quite possibly the most coveted number in all of baseball.  Two hits per five official at-bats.  An average not seen in more than a decade.  And here was Ted, right on the cusp.  His coach gave him the option to sit out the final day to protect .400, but that wasn't really Williams' style.

So Ted Williams took the risk and played on September 28th, which happened to be a double-header for the Red Sox.  And all he did was go 6-for-8, finishing the season with a .406 batting average.  And Ted did more than hit for average, he hit 37 homeruns, drove in 120 runs, and walked an astounding 147 times...at the tender age of 22.  But that year's MVP award went to Dimaggio, as his 56-game hitting streak won the day for the voters.

The magic plateau of .400 has been approached a handful of times since '41 (George Brett's .390 in 1980, Rod Carew's .388 in 1977, and, more recently, Tony Gwynn's .394 average in the strike-killing 1994 season), but it hasn't been eclipsed.  It's hard to say whether it will ever be reached again.  Baseball's expansion in the 90's has allowed gobs of mediocre pitching in both leagues to fatten averages and statistics of hitters who, 25 years ago, would not likely have been playing.  Still, "2 hits per 5 ab's" is (obviously) nearly impossible to maintain through a 162-game schedule.

Ted Williams said that he would like someone else to hit .400, just so people would stop bothering him about it.  But Ted's accomplishment on this day in 1941 is so special, and the game of baseball has changed so much in nearly 70 years.  I just can't see anyone duplicating Williams' feat any time soon.  And so Williams must remain alone on the batting-average pinnacle...for the time being.

I saw that "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" was playing in Reeves Theater and I decided I was going to take advantage of my Student Government fees and watch a Student Production Friday Night Movie. When I do go to these events such as Casino Night, I do it for the free raffle.

The movies they show are the popular movies that were played during the summer, so I have seen every one. Very few people go to the movie nights because of the actual movie, but to get the free stuff such as popcorn, soda and a cool raffle prize.

Friday night however, when the movie finished, I was informed that the winner would get a $15 iTunes card. Whoopee! I don't even use iTunes. I can see why only 100 people show up to these events.

The university tries hard to have events that gives students who don't party an alternative venue. I agree that there should be those type of events, but maybe they could come up with something a little more creative than a movie every Friday. I know they do a lot more, but that is all that I see from the outside in. Maybe if there was a television station then we would be more informed.

Back to the point. I believe that if SP and SG have a raffle with a cool prize like a digital camera or something around the $100 price range then they would have more participation. It is easy to fill Reeves that holds 180 people, but if they advertise the event a lot more with cool prizes then they would need Falk Theatre for Friday night movies.
