Living in UK for the past two year, arriving shortly after 7/7 bombings. The change of culture and behavior over this short time was best describe by the Channel 4 Program Dispatches: It Shouldn't Happen To A Muslim. It accurately portray how european history is repeating itself.

I believe it is closely linked to what happen a few decades ago in Hungary which was shown in the movie Sunshine (1999). It reminds me of how being a muslim in Britain means. It best comes out in the quote by Adam Sors (All the sors changed their last name from the Jewish Sonnenschein to something more Hungarian).

Never give up your religion. Not for God. God is present in all religions. But if your life becomes a struggle for acceptance, you'll always be unhappy. Religion may not be perfect, but it is a well-built boat that can stay balanced and carry you to the other shore. Our life is nothing but a boat adrift on water balanced by permanent uncertainty. About the people whom you will judge, know this; all they do is struggle to find a kind of security. They're just people, like us. Therefore you mustn't judge them on the basis of appearance or hearsay. Trust no one. Examine all things yourself. Do not join with power. Despise all rank. Do not be ostentatious with what is yours. Owning possessions and property ultimately comes to nothing. Possessions and property can be consumed by fire, swept away by flood, taken away by politics. Do not undertake what you do not know. This causes anxiety which makes you ill. Exercise discipline.

I hope that with time if we reflect back on this we could have good conclusion to all this as was in the movie when Ivan Sors reflects:

For the first time in my life, I walked down the street without feeling like I was in hiding. My great grandfather Emmanuel must have been the last Sonnenschein to feel like this. I knew the only way to find meaning in my life, my only chance in life, would be to account for it. My grandmother's words return to me; "Try to photograph what's beautiful in life." By the time I finish this story, the third tragic misadventure of the 20th century was over. After the monarchy and fascist rule, the communist regime also went up in smoke. I remembered the recipe book that we had lost and suddenly realized that the family secret was not to be found on its pages. It was preserved by my grandmother. The only one in our family who had the gift of breathing freely.

Australian punk band which was formed in Sydney in 1977 by Ian Rilen (with a rotating line-up of other musicians). They broke up and reformed several times.

Ian Rilen was also in a number of other bands - Sardine V (with his wife Stephanie) and Rose Tatoo. He also released two solo albums - "Love Is Murder" (2001) and "Passion, Boots and Bruises" (2004). He died from bladder cancer on March 30, 2006, aged 59.

Currently, band is still active and it includes Cathy Green on drums, Kim Volkman on bass guitar/vocals and Steve Lucas on guitar/vocals.

Note - Not to confuse this band with US band X led by John Doe and Exene Cervenka

Film on terrorism to help relatives get back their lives

FILM about the effects of terrorism made by the friend of a woman killed in the 7/7 London Underground suicide bombings is being screened in public.

The four bombings killed 52 passengers and injured hundreds of others on the Tube network and a London bus in July, 2005.

Raj Babbra made a documentary about the impact of the bombs by telling the story of the life of his former girlfriend Benedetta Ciaccia, one of the seven passengers killed at Aldgate station in one of the attacks.

7/7 bomb victim organises walk for peace

A WALK aimed at bringing people together, organised by a July 7 London bombing survivor, is set to pass through Stanmore next week.

WALKTALK is an ambitious and challenging month-long initiative devised by Gill Hicks, who lost both her legs in the terrorist attack in 2005, and her husband, Joe Kerr, that offers an opportunity for people to meet, walk and talk about their life experiences.

The walk, which started on July 19 in Leeds and ends in central London on Sunday, August 17, will be completed by a small team of walkers covering ten miles each day.

Worked from home yesterday to see the Beijing Olympics Opening Ceremony; of course most Londoners were working hard as usual in the office, including the London Olympics 2012 office staff...

With 8 being a much prized number in China, the Opening ceremony on the 8th August 2008 appears not only very fortunate for the Chinese but it will make remembering when it happened a darn site easier for all of us.

Which brings me to ask, am I the only Londoner that gets totally wound up every time I hear a BBC commentator referring glibly to 'the events of 9/11', as if I am supposed to remember that 'of course' it means 11th September 2001, and not as 'silly old English me' would think refers to 9th November? Since when has the UK used the American month, date, year date format?

In the West the number 7 is often considered lucky, perhaps the 'events of 7/7' might change some people's views on that...

Como sugere o nome, serão produzidas apenas 77 unidades do exclusivo modelo, cujas vendas começam no início de 2009, na Inglaterra. Poucas informações do esportivo, em carroceria cupê, foram divulgadas pela marca. Custando exorbitantes £ 1.000.000, o equivalente a pouco mais de R$ 3.000, o Aston Martin One-77 virá equipado com um propulsor 7.0l V12.

Apesar da potência não divulgada, além da ausência de detalhes técnicos, sabe-se que ele atingirá cerca de 322km/h, segundo dados do fabricante. A aceleração de 0-100kmh em 3,5s é apenas uma estimativa. Montado sobre um chassi de fibra de carbono, a carroceria é feita totalmente em alumínio, reduzindo o peso e apimentando o desempenho. Primeiro projeto totalmente autônomo da empresa britânica depois de deixar o grupo Ford, o One-77 será apresentado no Salão Internacional de Paris, em outubro deste ano. Seus principais concorrentes serão esportivos topo de linha de Porshce, Ferrari e outras tradicionais montadoras.

Time to face down the terrorism deniers

THE NEW National Risk Register says a flu pandemic is the greatest risk to national security the UK is facing.

So how long, do you think, before the cry goes up: "We're wasting time on all this anti-terrorist legislation - prepare for flu instead!" (followed, depressingly and inevitably, by claims that there would be no terrorist threat at all if British foreign policy were different).

Makes about as much sense as one previous commenter on this blog who said that terrorism wasn't as big a threat to our citizens as the private car, since the number of people killed on our roads was so much higher than the number killed on 7/7.

Before 7/7, the terrorism deniers claimed there was nothing to worry about. After 7/7 they said it was all the government's fault. The National Risk Register is a useful document, but I hope we will take no notice of those who use it to justify their own refusal to face up to the truth about Islamist terrorism.

I mean what can I say the dude had President written on the back of his seats on his 757 Airplane. I mean the election has 90 some odd days left to go, he is one very arrogant person it is beyond stuck up. I am starting toi think that Barack Obama knows he has not a chance to win this election so he is purposly sabatoging himself in in-direct ways to make it seem like he is okay with it. Looks to me like the signs of a huge sore loser and we don't need that from people running for president let alone coaches like rodthefraud! Leaked information word has it by the media that some time ago Barack Obama admitted that he knew he will never win the elections so his plan was to purposely sabotage himself as he is doing now with his blatant arrogance. He knew that would turn voters off in a second. He said, at this point he just wants to have fun since he has been found out!

LONDON (Reuters) - The jury at the trial of three Britons accused of plotting with the four men who carried out the London bombings of July 7, 2005 were shown dramatic and previously unseen CCTV footage of the attacks.

Mohammad Sidique Khan, Shehzad Tanweer, Jermaine Lindsay and Hasib Hussain killed 52 people bombers and injured hundreds more in the in co-ordinated morning rush hour attacks on three underground trains and a bus.

On Friday, a jury at Kingston Crown Court failed to reach a verdict in the trial of Mohammed Shakil, Sadeer Saleem and Waheed Ali who were accused of conspiring to cause explosions.

During the trial, the jury was shown footage of the moments two of the bombings occurred, an alleged scouting mission by three of the bombers throughout London's transport network nine days before the attacks and photographs of the extensive damage the blasts caused.

7/7 bombing victims to get Hyde Park memorial

LONDON (AP) - Families of those who died in the July 7, 2005 London transit bombings released plans Friday for a permanent memorial made up of 52 stainless steel columns, one for each of the victims.
The government is backing plans for the monument, which will stand in a corner of Hyde Park in the center of the city.

Three years ago, four suicide bombers _ all British Muslims _ blew themselves up aboard three crowded subway trains and a bus in the deadliest attack on London since World War II. More than 700 people were injured in the rush-hour attacks.

Victims' relatives helped choose the design for the memorial, a series of 3-meter (10-foot) columns clustered into four interlinked groups representing the four attacks.

Jag gillar punk. Både gammal och ny, från olika delar av världen och i olika tappning. Jag spelar också punk i en orkester, så jag tycker nog att det är den bästa livemusiken. Den är bäst för att ilska blandas med total dansglädje, energi, skoj och ohämmat ös. Musikstilen fyllde 30 år förra året, sades det. Vadå 30 år? Vad är det som signifierar att punk föddes? Kläderna? Banden? Människorna?

Shane MacGowan berättar i sin fascinerande biografi A Drink With Shane MacGowan om hur han och hans vänner drev runt och lyssnade på soul, reggae och glam, men i stort sett var punkare redan under tidigt sjuttiotal, innan den brittiska punkmusiken fanns. Men för många är det viktigt att kategorisera, stämpla i arkiv och beteckna och sedan minnas genom nostalgifuktiga ögon. 77 blev visst ett nytt 68, ironiskt nog.

I samband med denna högtid ordnades olika konserter och events med massa gamla skitband på flådiga ställen runt om i Sverige. Radioprogrammet Tendens gjorde ett sentimentalt program i 3 delar om punken 30 år, som man kan lyssna på här, här och här. Det som slår mig när jag lyssnar är, förutom hur P1 ibland lyckas intellektualisera de mest ointellektuella ting, hur tråkigt och lustbefriat allting behandlas av dem som var med. Intervjupersonerna sitter och bigotterar om hur fantastisk kreativa och egna de var, jämfört med ungdomen nu som bara apar efter, och om hur mycket rörelsen betydde. Ett ohämmat surgubberi. Jag som trodde att det handlade om att ha kul.

För ärligt talat, kopplar man samman svensk 70-talspunk med ord som viktigt, betydande eller rörelse så tror jag att man har missat poängen och förlorar sig i nostalgi. Det räcker med att lyssna på musiken i fråga för att förstå att det mesta var antingen tristess, fylleploj eller helt enkelt fullt ös. Varken mer eller mindre.

convincente nella parte privata, nella descrizione di una coppia e di una famiglia che si sfalda dopo la nascita di una figlia down, nella storia dei rapporti tra padre e figlio adolescente innamorato dei suoi libri (Calvino su tutti)

anche lo straniamento del protagonista alle prese con le storie irrisolte della sua vita dà spunti felici di riflessione

paradossalmente (?) non mi convince nella parte politica: almeno due cose mi hanno dato proprio fastidio

Primo: la rappresentazione del '77 solo come movimento violento: quel movimento restò schiacciato tra la militarizzazione kossighiana dello stato, avallata dal perbenista PCI dell'epoca, e l'ala violenta dal movimento, alleanza tra liderini a caccia di notorietà (alcuni dei quali da 30 anni distruggono tutto ciò che si muove a sinistra con il loro settarismo, v. anche le recenti vicende del prc) e l'ala tozza e militonta dell'autonomia
di certo il movimento non fu, come gli alleati militaristi delle due parti vogliono ancora oggi far credere, solo violenza, ma fu principalmente creatività alternativa e voglia di liberazione personale e politica
presentare poi, come fa Veltroni, la manifestazione del 12.3.1977 solo come una manifestazione di violenti è uno stupido falso storico: siamo in tanti a ricordare pestaggi, certo non subiti da poveri poliziotti inermi; e siamo stati in tanti (la maggioranza assoluta del corteo!) a subire le violenze parallele di PS e AutOp

Secondo: il terrorismo delle BR fu un fenomeno complesso che contribuì alla sconfitta dei movimenti e la sua scelta di morte fu sconfitta prima eticamente e politicamente che militarmente; ridurre le tormentate scelte che portarono al terrorismo a gelosie personalpolitiche mi sembra operazione stupida oltre che storicamente falsa

detto ciò il libro, quando NON si occupa di (fanta)politica, è abbastanza godibile e Uòlter si dimostra uno scrittore sensibile, anche se ancora un po' ingenuo

vero: spessissimo sento in giro la paura diffusa di tutto, molti di noi ci vivono insieme, ci vanno a dormire e se ne fanno conquistare e dominare ... sono contento di non far parte dei paurosi, mi sembra un segnale di invecchiamento (personale e sociale) ... spero che le paure mi vengano dopo i cent'anni! ;-)
