Some of our solstice guest have arrived and the tents are scattered across the lawn like the mushrooms that grow wild there. I figured everyone would want to find a private little space for themselves, but instead they are huddled together like frightened sheep. To be honest our graded lawn is one of the few flat spots on our property and maybe this rather than lack of the desire for privacy drove everyone together.

You say wait, go back to the mushrooms.... are they edible? The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Mushrooms calls them "choice". What we have growing wild and volunteer is a Meadow Mushroom, Agarics campestris. I was a bit hesitant as I haven't the mushroom hunting experience that my husband has, but after confirming that they are not the white amanita I am happy to consume as many as decide to grow for us. I admit after our happy discovery we have been faithful to leave a few to repopulate and we throw our grey water over the areas that tend to be most prolific. This is our third year harvesting the tasty mushrooms and they are more plentiful now than when we first discovered them growing outside our front door. Morels, Shaggy Manes and many others grow quite willingly for us to harvest.

As always consult a field guide and always be absolutely sure before you eat any wild foods.

I found this great little German (I think) wooden candle holder at the flea market recently and have been looking at it a lot, as it's been in my living room since bringing it home. I love those red and white mushrooms and have a lot of them stashed around my house, mainly with my Christmas decorations.

I think the correct term for this type of mushroom is Amanita, which I learned in this helpful guide I picked up a while ago:

Anyway, after rummaging through my fabric stash last night, I came up with this skirt for my shop using some linen I had on hand and one of a set of vintage napkins I unburied at the thrift store a while ago. I love the all of the little pictures on the fabric - mushrooms, bugs, snails, nuts, leaves. I still have four of the napkins left and hope to make something for myself sometime. It all reminds me of the walks we took in the woods near our cabin in Northern Michigan when I was growing up. I always came home with a handful of treasures I'd picked up along the way, many of which are right on those napkins.

Here is a video of Christian Ratsch giving a casual and deeply inspired talk at a trance party . Ratsch is the world's foremost scholar/researcher of shamanic plants and cultures. Author several phenomenal books including the 1000 page tome, The Encyclopedia of Psychoactive Plants. I had the pleasure of socializing with him (and other luminaries) in 2000 at Palenque, Mexico and I can attest to his psychedelic charm. Nice storyteller, too. I highly recommend the earlier, more formal presentation, 'Psychoactivity: The Fountain of Culture'.

My Answer: Amanita. It's a genus of killer mushrooms, it eats away your liver and no antidote is available. This genus consists of many edible varieties but the risk is definitely not worth the reward. Given that 95% of all the mushroom poisoning cases reported point their fingers at Amanita and at least 50% of these cases were caused by accidentally or ignorantly consuming the Death Cap aka "the world's most dangerous mushroom". The fun part is that death caps are relatively rare in most parts of the US, but they are fairly common in the San Francisco bay area. Time to go mushroom hunting, Ki ready?

It'll be a very high quality film.
(The trailer takes a long time to load so start it and pause and come back to it in, like, 5 minutes or so.)
Check it out! > The God Botherers

This post is from Michael Hoffman (egodeath.com). I whole-heartedly agree. I, also, was upset when this general audience book came out attempting to debunk decades or scholarly research:

Talks of Letcher's "findings":
http://stopthedrugwar.org/chronicle/490/book_review_andy_letcher_shrooms_mag

I also spoke with a modernity-focused psychedelics researcher who also bought into Letcher's illusion of rigor. I'm starting to agree with Jan Irvin that the shortcomings of Letcher's book could cause some harm and serve as the biggest setback to the field of entheogen scholarship since Wasson's dismissal of the Plaincourault fresco as Amanita and Wasson's complete failure to consider entheogens throughout the Bible & Christian history.

Anyone who hasn't read much entheogen scholarship, and hasn't made that their main focus, is likely to come away from Letcher's book with the mis-impression that the entheogen theory of religion has been proven baseless. Letcher needs to publish corrections and clarifications to reduce the harm that his half-informed, abridged "popular audience" book has done
to the field of entheogen scholarship.

We need more issues of Entheos magazine to dispel the pernicious illusion that the entheogen theory of religious origins = the mushroom theory as popularized using Wasson/Allegro/McKenna, and the illusion that Letcher's book treated all the evidence and arguments for the entheogen or mushroom theory of religious origins & history. Shroom is a biased treatment: it waves aside much evidence, carelessly treats the existing evidence, and waffles on which hypothesis it is purporting to refute.

The popular version of the mushroom theory of religion that is based on
Wasson/Allegro/McKenna has flaws, but neither is Shroom correct. Letcher is not a general entheogen scholar; he researched the popular Wasson/Allegro/McKenna mushroom theory in isolation. The resulting biased, distorted picture and treatment demonstrates why authors must be cautious when writing a book about only a single visionary plant. Authors need to do all their homework across the overall field, to contribute valid studies in the subfields.

Demonstrates Shroom is not rigorous as it needs to be:
http://www.egodeath.com/ViewsOnEntheogensInReligiousHistory.htm - high-level
analysis of the situation and state of the field; categorizes Letcher's view
within a typology of competing paradigms

Amanita muscaria

Been looking for one of these all fall. It has to be the most recognisable mushroom. In my mind anyway. Every fall in Vancouver I would go look for mushrooms in my neighbourhood and Queen Elizabeth Park - my facourite Vancouver park and went there a lot. I always lived within a few blocks from it. If I hadn't moved to Cumberland this blog would be about QE Park and lawn mushrooms. There is a Fly Amanita there that returns every year. It gets very large... Wish I had a picture to show you.

This one is on it's way down and it seems some slug took a chomp from it. Perhap in a few millenia and if you follow Terence McKenna's "stoned ape theory", this slug will be driving around with a cel phone drinking a StarBucks' (Tell Starbucks to Give Ethiopian Farmers Their Fair Share).

I really don't know if this is an amanita. From my reference books, this one best resembles the Blusher but there are enough differences to make me question it. I guess digging for a bulb would have told me if this is an amanita otr not but I rarely pick or touch mushrooms I find - except for ones I'm specifically looking for.
