Comme pour la plupart des autoroutes construites en régions montagneuses, l'A-73 comporte certaines particularités.

Ici, avant la sortie vers la route Cameron, on avise les conducteurs de camions de 15 tonnes et plus d'utiliser cette sortie pour atteindre Vallée-Jonction, la côte à descendre, à cet endroit, étant trop abrupte.

Le point de raccordement des deux chaussées de l'A-73 en une seule, au kilomètre 94, juste au nord de la rivière Chassé, et au sud de la sortie de la route Cameron.

Les conducteurs de camions de 15 tonnes et plus, qui n'ont pas sorti à la route Cameron, une fois rendus à la sortie de Vallée-Jonction, se feront diriger, par l'entremise de ce panneau, vers la sortie 72, à Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce.

La forte densité des nuages, ainsi que les arbres matures, situés assez près de la chaussée, ont créé un contrejour important, sur cette photo.  C'est à cet endroit que l'A-73 se terminait, avant l'automne dernier; la sortie 72, vers la route 276, à Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce.  Le tout nouveau tronçon s'étend à partir de ce point, vers le sud.

Un panneau avertissant de la possible présence d'orignaux n'a rien de bien original, sauf que de tels panneaux, munis de feux clignotants, sont plutôt rares, au Québec.  Ils sont courants sur la route US-201, dans le Maine, la route qui se rattache à la QC-173, à la hauteur de la frontière américaine.

Une fois que l'on a traversé la rivière Calway, l'A-73 se redivise en deux chaussées, plus précisément au kilomètre 65,4.

Ici, on indique que l'A-73 se terminera dans 2 kilomètres.  Nous sommes à Beauceville.

Voici les deux ponts de la rivière des Plante, à Beauceville, à environ un kilomètre de la fin de l'autoroute.

À la fin de l'A-73, il faut prendre le chemin du Golf, pour aller rejoindre la route 173.  Comme il y a une pente assez longue, il a fallu aménager une aire de vérification des freins, pour les camions lourds.

Ce fut plutôt compliqué de prendre l'intersection de la QC-173 et du chemin du Golf en photo.  Il n'y a pas vraiment d'espace pour stationner la blogue-mobile de façon sécuritaire, et j'étais derrière deux camions-remorques.  L'opération a donc donné ceci.

Les larges accotements m'ont toutefois permis de prendre en image une vue plus impressionnante des ponts de la rivière des Plante, cette fois en direction nord.

Je fus un peu déçu, parce que l'A-73 s'arrète au chemin du Golf, à Beauceville, puis que passé ce point, plus rien.  Pas de travaux.  Je vous reviendrai là-dessus, d'autant plus que Patrick Lessard, auteur d'un site web dédié à l'autoroute 73, m'a communiqué de précieuses informations sur cette autoroute, ainsi que sur les tergiversations concernant la poursuite des travaux.  C'est donc à suivre.

Über 1300 Neofaschisten marschierten durch Dortmund. Antifaschisten fordern Rücktritt des Polizeipräsidenten. Spontandemo von Antifaschisten gestoppt

Während sich Neonazis in Dortmund am Samstag über einen »Teilnehmerrekord« freuten, verkaufte die Polizei ihr Einsatzkonzept als vollen »Erfolg«. Antifaschisten aus der Ruhrgebietsstadt fordern hingegen den Rücktritt des Polizeipräsidenten, Hans Schulze (SPD). Dieser hatte zugelassen, daß mehr als 1300 Neonazis aus dem In- und Ausland unter dem Motto »Gegen imperialistische Kriegstreiberei und Aggressionskriege« durch die Ruhrgebietsmetropole marschierten.

Sowohl die Vereinigung der Verfolgten des Naziregimes – Bund der Antifaschisten (VVN-BdA) als auch das Dortmunder »Bündnis gegen rechts« (Bgr) und die Bezirksvertretung Innenstadt-Ost hatten eindringlich das Verbot der neuerlichen Neonaziprovokation gefordert. Polizeiführung und Stadt Dortmund sahen dazu jedoch keinen Anlaß. Dies, obwohl es in den vergangenen Wochen zu einer von Neonazis verübten Anschlagsserie kam, die sich gegen das Dortmunder Wahlkreisbüro der innenpolitischen Sprecherin der Linkspartei im Bundestag, Ulla Jelpke, und die Wohnhäuser von Antifaschisten richtete (jW berichtete). Auch körperliche Übergriffe der als äußerst militant geltenden Dortmunder Neonazis hatte es gegeben. In der vergangenen Woche überfielen etwa 40 von ihnen eine Gruppe Antifaschisten in der Innenstadt. Zudem machte am Freitag eine Gruppe rechter Jugendlicher Jagd auf Mitglieder des Bgr, die antifaschistische Flugblätter in der Nähe des Aufmarschortes der Neonazis verteilten. Nur durch die Flucht in eine Gaststätte konnten sich die Nazigegner vor der sechsköpfigen Angreifergruppe retten. Ursula Richter, Sprecherin des Bündnisses, sagte am Sonntag im Gespräch mit jW, es sei »unglaublich, daß der Aufmarsch nach all der Nazigewalt der letzten Wochen nicht verboten« worden sei.

Der Aufzug der Rechten in Dortmund am Samstag war nicht nur der bislang größte in der Stadt, die Teilnehmer waren auch in einem bisher nicht gekannten Maß auf Konfronation aus. So versuchten sie mehrfach, polizeiliche Absperrungen zu durchbrechen. Insgesamt 16 Polizisten wurden dabei verletzt. Sechs Rechte und 47 Nazigegner wurden vorläufig festgenommen, Strafanzeigen wurden wegen Körperverletzung, Verdacht auf Landfriedensbruch und Verstöße gegen das Sprengstoff- und das Versammlungsgesetz von den Beamten aufgenommen.

An einer Kundgebung, die maßgeblich von Kirchen- und Gewerkschaftsvertretern organisiert worden war, nahmen rund 1500 Nazigegner teil. Unter dem Beifall der Anwesenden forderte Tülin Dolutas, Rednerin des Bgr, Polizeipräsident Schulze auf, der Dortmunder Bevölkerung einen Gefallen zu tun, und endlich zurückzutreten. Als der Dortmunder Oberbürgermeister Gehard Langemeyer (SPD) auf der Bühne wiederholt leugnete, daß die Stadt eine »Hochburg der Rechten« sei und behauptete, daß Rechtsextreme in Dortmund keine Chance hätten, machte sich unter den Anwesenden Unmut breit. Spontan beschlossen knapp 700 Antifaschisten sich am Ende der Kundgebung in Richtung der Neonazis aufzumachen, um dort verlegte Stolpersteine, die an Opfer der Faschisten erinnern, vor Schändung durch die Neonazis zu schützen. Die Polizei hatte dies im Vorfeld untersagt und stoppte die Spontandemonstration noch vor Erreichen der Naziroute. Angeführt wurde der Zug von betagteren Aktivisten der »Aktion 65 plus«, die im Vorfeld zur Blockade des Naziaufmarsches aufgerufen hatten.

An einer Demonstration sogenannter »antideutscher Gruppen«, die sich gegen »Antiamerikanismus und Antisemitismus« richtete, nahmen ebenfalls am Samstag knapp 800 Personen teil. Im Vorfeld hatten die Organisatoren einen Aufruf veröffentlicht, in dem linke Kriegsgegner als »Nationalpazifisten« verunglimpft wurden und ihnen eine Nähe zu den Neonazis bescheinigt wurde.

The above excerpt of § 101 is the basis of patent law in the U.S. With the exception of a small modification in 1952, § 101 has remained virtually unchanged since written by Thomas Jefferson. Until recent times, the statute gathered little attention. However, with the addition of software and business method patents in the 1980’s, the statute has been the subject of dispute. Until about 1981, the U.S. Patent Office held that steps performed by a computer were unpatentable under at least § 101. However, in Diamond v. Diehr, 450 U.S. 175 (1981), the Supreme Court overruled the Patent Office and held that, though an algorithm and the like are abstract and unpatentable, the fact that an otherwise patentable process is carried out on a computer does not make it unpatentable.

As a result, to this day, software and business method patents are often written in a roundabout manner. For example, Einstein could not patent his famous E=MC2 formula because this is considered an abstract law of nature. However, claim a method of determining the mass of an object based on measurements of light passing through the object, and you have probably at least overcome § 101.

If the difference between the first and second example seem fuzzy, it is because it is. A patent is nothing less than the creation of a property right from an intangible concept, and it is no easy task to define the boundary of an intangible right. King Solomon said, “. . . that which has been done is that which will be done. So there is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9). Yet, the Supreme Court famously ruled, “anything new under the sun made by man” is patentable. Diamond v. Chakrabarty, 447 U.S. 303, 309 (1980), quoting S.Rep.No 1979, 82d Cong., 2d Sess., 5 (1952).

For the past 30 years, the Patent Office and the courts have defined and redefined the difference between a patentable process and an abstract concept. No test has ever stood the test of time. A colleague of mine filed a patent we both knew the Patent Office was likely to reject under § 101. He retorted, “Who knows what the law will be in three years when the Patent Office finally examines this application?”

One of the presently used tests was stated by the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in State Street Bank & Trust Co. Here, it was found that an idea is patentable if it produces a useful, concrete and tangible result. State Street Bank & Trust Co. v. Signature Financial Group, 149 F.3d 1368 (Fed. Cir. Jul. 23, 1998). However in 2006 Justices Scalia, Thomas, and Alito noted, “this Court has never made such a statement and, if taken literally, the statement would cover instances where this Court has held the contrary. " Lab Corp. v. Metabolite, 548 U.S. ___ (2006) (referring to O'Reilly v. Morse, 15 How. 62 (1854) for Morse code).

Meanwhile, while the U.S. Patent Office’s Interim Guidelines for Examination of Patent Applications for Patent Subject Matter Eligibility (2005) generally follow the Federal Circuit, the U.S. Patent Office Appeals Board in Bilski distinguished State Street, as only applying to “machine implemented” processes (contradicting State Street itself). The decision, complete with an excerpt from Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean, is nothing less than a demand that the Federal Circuit’s test be overturned, perhaps, in a bid to decrease that Patent Office’s seven-year backlog for business method patent applications. The Supreme Court may agree.

The Bilski opinion is in the process of being heard en banc at the Federal Circuit, but the issue over whether to draw the line between a man-made discovery versus an abstract concept will likely remain a controversy for a long time to come.

First, we examine what is S.M.A.R.T. and how it works. Advanced users may skip some paragraphs.

S.M.A.R.T.
S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology) is designed by IBM. It was created to monitor the disk status by using various methods and devices (sensors). A single ATA hard disk may have up to 30 such measured values, which are called attributes. Some of them directly or indirectly affect hard disk health status and others give statistical information.

Today all modern IDE/Serial ATA/SCSI hard disks have S.M.A.R.T. feature. It is not really a standard - so the meaning of the attributes may be different from manufacturer to manufacturer. In this article, we discuss ATA (IDE and Serial ATA) hard disks only. SCSI hard disks work differently: the failure predicition data is standard and there are strict rules about the sensors and algorythms. For example, the difference between real temperature and the result measured by the sensor should be less than +/- 3 Celsius degrees.

Many attributes are used by all manufacturers and they are used in the same (or near same) way. That's why for example it is possible to detect the temperature and the total power on time of many hard disks. Newer applications are able to detect, process and display these information.

According the S.M.A.R.T. specifications, when a problem is detected (failure predicted), the hard disk should work for at least 24 hours to perform the data backup. But in many cases this time is not enough - that's why it is important to recognize problems and prepare before it's too late.

S.M.A.R.T. in action
The current status of the hard disk are constantly examined by many sensors. The measured values are then processed by some algorythms and the corresponding attributes are modified according the results.

A single S.M.A.R.T. attribute has the following fields:

Identifier (byte): the meaning of the attribute. Many attributes have standard meanings (for example, 5 = number of reallocated sectors, 194 = temperature, etc). Most applications provide name and textual description about the attributes.

Data (6 bytes): raw measured values are stored in this field, provided by a sensor or a counter. This data is then processed by an algorythm designed by the hard disk manufacturer. Sometimes different parts (for example, low, middle, high 16 bits) of this value contain different kind of information.

Threshold (byte): the (failure) limit value for the attribute.

Value (byte): the current relative "health" of the attribute. This number is calculated by the algorythm, using the raw data (see above). On a new hard disk, this number is high (a theoretical maximum, for example 100, 200 or 253) and it is decreasing during the lifetime of the disk.

Worst (byte): the worst (smallest) value ever found in the previous lifetime of the hard disk.

Status flags: indicate the main purpose of the attribute. An attribute can be for example critical (able to predict failure) or statistical one (does not directly affect condition).

Note: software may display more information based on these fields (for example, the status of an attribute, which can be "OK" or "Always OK" etc.) and may give help in evaluation or management of the attributes.

Attributes with their details

An attribute is correct, when the Value is greater than or equal with the Threshold. If this is not true for a critical attribute, failure is predicted, the hard disk is considered bad and it should be replaced immediately (the attribute determines the problem). Manufacturers/vendors replace the hard disk in the terms of warranty. The S.M.A.R.T. function in modern motherboard BIOSes warns the user at this point before booting the operating system. If the Threshold is 0 for any attribute, that attribute is not able to predict failure (because the Value cannot be less than 0).

Mathematically, one attribute is perfect if the following inequality is TRUE (you may skip this paragraph if you hate maths):

A - f(r) >= C (1)
Where:

A - theoretical maximum value, the "best" possible value for the attribute.

f - a function to calculate the decrement based on the raw (r) values. Usually it is a linear function, so in most cases r is multiplied by a B constant.

C - the vendor specific threshold level, under this level, the attribute is considered problematic.

This method has some disadvantages. The A, B, C, values (or the f function) are not defined exactly (these may vary from model to model even on two hard disks from the same manufacturer). Other disadvantage is that the attributes are evaluated independently, the relationship between them is ignored.

The problems with S.M.A.R.T.
The model described above has many weak points. Because of these problems, in most cases failure prediction is not working at all. The major problems are:

#1 Incorrect thresholds
Most problems with S.M.A.R.T. (lack of failure prediction) are caused by incorrectly selected Thresholds. Because of this, the hard disk attributes have no chance to reach the thresholds - usually they fail (become useless) before reaching this point. In such cases, S.M.A.R.T. really does not predict the failure.

In practical, we can find non realistic threshold values. For example, on most hard disks, many thousands of bad (not readable and writable) sectors required (according to the size of the spare area) before S.M.A.R.T. shows the problem. It does not seem to be a big problem because 1000 such bad sector takes "just" 512000 bytes of data (and this does not mean capacity loss because of using the spare area instead), but it may be important how these bad sectors born, where they are located on the surface and what is the bad sector increase rate.

In most cases, problems can be detected long time before an attribute value reaches its threshold. For example, a head problem which can make many thousands of sectors unusable (bad), can cause bigger parts of the disk surface unreadable - preventing the recovery of data from this disk area. Also analysing a such problematic area and saving the data to spare area may need lots of time (even hours), and it is possible that the operation is not completed without errors. During this process, the operating system usually stops responding, so a problematic hard disk may cause complete system instability.

Value=253, Threshold=63, on this disk 1900 bad sector is required to reach the threshold. Fortunately, on this disk, there are no such bad sectors

We can discuss about improperly selected threshold values also. Some hard disk manufacturers may define 60-70 years or even more for a hard disk total lifetime when the corresponding attribute is examined. It is really interesting - because manufacturers usually define the designed lifetime in 5 years in product manuals. Moreover, S.M.A.R.T. will not alert when the end of the lifetime is reached because this attribute is usually not a critical one.

The Value decreased to 97 from 100 after 759 days of usage. How much time we would need to reach the end of the vendor specific lifetime?

Moreover, the threshold value is 0 for many critical attributes. Because the Value cannot be decreased below 0, these attributes will never indicate any sign of failure - even if they "want" to do this. So S.M.A.R.T. will never alert.

Critical attributes and the threshold is 0

Sometimes very important attributes are not marked as "critical". It means that hard disk monitoring applications and the BIOS S.M.A.R.T. feature do not examine these attributes at all.

#2 Wrong evaluation method
Most applications use the vendor-specific method described above to calculate and display the health of the disk. The result is that most hard disks look much better than their real status. Hard disk manufacturers may choose thresholds or algorythms to show their hard disks better than an other hard disk from an other manufacturer also. This may mislead applications and users as well.

Software developers just use the manufacturer-dependent evaluation method and they do not do anything about detecting the real health status of the disks. Because of this, it is possible that the user use a hard disk monitoring application but the hard disk fail before showing any sign of problems or even a decrease in condition. Such applications may display 10-20 years or more as estimated remaining lifetime - which is at least questionable.

#3 Weight of attributes
Different attributes affect disk health differently. Some attributes (for example, 10 - spin retry count) are very critical. A small change in this attribute may indicate a serious problem, for example bad motor or bearing - but maybe a weak power supply can cause this problem also.

For such attributes, manufacturers often use a high threshold value, so they can be reached relatively easily. But because of the selection of the threshold and the f function described above in (1) inequality, some problems may be completely ignored. So users will not notice any changes of the critical attributes.

An other problem is that the relationship between the attributes is often ignored. It is possible that two or more attribute values almost reach their thresholds - but failure is not predicted because no value reached the threshold level.

#4 Lack of feedback
Without using a proper software which is able to read S.M.A.R.T. information, the user does not notice any problems with the hard disk, just when it's too late. If the number of bad sectors increase slowly (the hard disk founds some new problematic sectors and tests them and reallocates them), the user may not notice anything, especially if only the screensaver is running. But during re-allocation procedure, the operating system seems to be frozen (not responding) and users may reset or power off the computer at this time. Such power loss does not help the hard disk too much in the recovery process (it will be re-started at a later time).

#5 Temperature, sensor problems
Without using software, the user may not notice high hard disk temperature also. Both CPU and newer VGA cards have protection (emergency shutdown) against high temperatures but hard disks have no such protection. Even worse, hard disks are much more sensitive to high temperatures than any other component inside the computer case. That's why most manufacturers limit the maximum operating temperature in 50-55 Celsius degrees.

Most BIOSes have support to examine the power supply voltage, fan speeds, CPU temperature etc. But it is not possible to examine hard disk temperature from BIOS. The BIOS S.M.A.R.T. function does not alert if the hard disk temperature is too high. So it is possible that the hard disk is operating in a very hot environment.

But it is important to know that many hard disk temperature sensors are not too accurate (sometimes the difference between detected and real temperature can be 8-10 Celsius degrees or even more). It is recommended to use an external device (for example an infrared thermometer) to measure the hard disk temperature and configure the difference between the measured and displayed values (calibration). So the software then displays the correct (adjusted) temperature value (if this feature is supported).

It is also recommended to examine the temperature when the hard disk is idle and when it is operating for a longer time.

If the temperature is too high or too low (compared to the environment) when powering the computer, it is recommended to verify the accuracy of the temperature sensor

#6 Incorrect drivers
We may find many incorrect drivers for hard disk controllers. By using such drivers, one or more hard disks do not provide S.M.A.R.T. information connected to such controllers (or motherboards). This is usually independent from the used software because applications generally use the same method to access hard disk and detect information about it. It is possible that two hard disk provide 100% same information (usually the details of the first or PRIMARY MASTER hard disk). Software may filter this and display real (but partial) information but it is recommended to verify that the details are correct (for example, no hard disk serial number is displayed 2 or more times).

Usually, the drivers support only a limited range of hard disk commands. That's why some features do not work in all cases (for example, acoustic management), even if the disk supports it.

It is recommended to examine if manufacturer has updated, fixed driver packages or firmware updates. These may improve the situation. If a controller has RAID and non-RAID drivers, it is important to use the correct (non-RAID if no RAID array used) drivers. Using the other package may limit some features and usually temperature, health status of the disk(s) will not be displayed.

Many motherboards or hard disk controllers do not have 100% correct drivers for Vista. This can also prevent detection of detailed hard disk information and failure prediction under the new operating system.

#7 Incorrect hardware or incorrect data
This is the extension of the previous problem #6. Some hard disk controllers or motherboards do not provide S.M.A.R.T. threshold values at all - or all threshold values are 0. Hard disks connected to such controllers will not show any sign of failure because the attribute values are not able to decrease below 0. Applications may also show the hard disk condition "excellent" because the Values are far from the thresholds.

All thresholds are 0 - the "forever young and healthy" hard disk. Really?

It is also possible that the information provided by the hard disk controller is not complete. This does not affect the hard disk failure prediction status but some information detected and displayed may not be correct. Fortunately this does not affect the temperature and the hard disk health also. Newer applications verify the ATA signature and checksum values (described on page 116 of "AT Attachment - 8 ATA/ATAPI Command Set") and display a warning if these values are not correct.

Ideal case: the controller and driver provide correct and reliable information

Bad sectors?
Users often ask about what is a "bad sector", how they born and what they can do to fix these. Users are confused because verifying the disk surface with software (for example by using Windows Scandisk) does not report any problems or bad sectors.

S.M.A.R.T. is constantly analysing the disk surface during normal operations. If it finds a problematic area (one or more sectors where the data is hard to read or write), it tries to read the data and copy it to the spare area. The original location is then (internally) marked as bad and all further read/write operations pointing to the original location is then redirected to the spare area.

When the operation is completed, the original (bad) area is not accessible by software any more. Even re-install or many complete format operations will not show problems because the original bad area is not used any more. That's why software (for example Windows' Scandisk) will not found problematic sectors. Only the hardware security erase function will access this area (clearing these sectors also).

That's why for example DOS "format" command will never show bad sectors on most modern hard disks because of S.M.A.R.T. (except if the spare area is full but it is really hard to find a such hard disk).

Reallocation of the sectors may be completed with or without some errors (hard disks are working much better now compared to older models). But the reallocation procedure may cause system instability if it takes too much time.

The user should not notice anything about the steps described above - just when the number of bad sectors is high enough (the threshold is reached) and then S.M.A.R.T. predicts a possible failure.

Solution
A hard disk failure without any signs before the catastrophe is extremely rare, except if drive fall down, or if high power (bias) or natural disaster cause problem. But these situations cannot be predicted by S.M.A.R.T. of course. Usually some bad sectors born, their number is slowly increasing (maybe weeks can elapse without any sign of new problems). In other cases, high temperature and/or few but really critical problems can cause the death of a drive.

It is also very common that the combined effect of two or more attributes indicate different problems. For example, if the hard disk motor is not able spin up easily (it needs some retries) or the disk spins up too slowly, it may indicate a possible motor or bearing problem. Such problems have written traces in the corresponding S.M.A.R.T. attributes. So all (even very small) changes can be detected.

It is important to detect these signs long time before they can lead to failure. It is recommended to completely discard the whole model described above and ignore the incorrectly choosen (or missing) threshold values and evaluate only the raw measured data numbers, to detect the real amount of different problems about the hard disks. It is advisable to examine the connection between different attributes also. This way we'll have correct picture about the real status and we can prepare and even avoid data loss.

It is also recommended to select how we want to evaluate the hard disk status, depending on the real usage and "stress" of a hard disk. For example, in case of a server, notebook or a hard disk with critical information, the smallest problem can be dangerous, so any problem (even small one) should be noticed.

Some applications may offer such different evaluation methods for different uses of hard disks and they may give textual description about the current situation and tips to improve the condition. It is a nice function if the software can make passive alarms (send e-mail, play sound or shut down the computer) but it may be better if the application is able to actively prevent data loss, for example by performing an automatic backup operation if a new problem is found.

Hard Disk Sentinel application was developed considering these requirements. During the development, the S.M.A.R.T. information of many (failed, not working) hard disks were examined from many different manufacturers. The evaluation methods were designed based on the collected information. It is important to say that the "traditional" S.M.A.R.T. did not predicted failure for most of these hard disks.

The BIOS S.M.A.R.T. function did not show any problems. According to the table, the Values (100 and above) are very far from the corresponding Threshold limits. Most of them (Value = 100) are still on the theoretical maximum. If we would use the traditional evaluation method (by checking the values and thresholds), the hard disk condition seems to be perfect. Values under 100 are caused by the age and usage of the drive. But the total power on time of this hard disk is only 5313 (0x14C1) hours (the manufacturer defined he total lifetime correctly: the total lifetime is approximately 4.7 years, using the disk 24 hours every day (5313/0.13)/24/365 = 4.665 years). So the drive is not too old.

In contrast, if we use Hard Disk Sentinel and select the strict evaluation method (because this hard disk is a 2.5" one, used in a notebook), we will get a completely different result. During the evaluation, the software examines the important attributes (even if they are not marked as "critical" by the manufacturer).

The health of the hard disk (checking the Data field of attributes 5, 196 and 197):

100 x (100 - 10x6) x (100 - 30) x (100 - 4x4) = 23.52 %

According to this number, the health is disquieting. By default, this software would alert the user if the health value is as low as this number. By selecting the correct evaluation method and the correct alert levels, it is possible to predict failure long before the catastrophe. The owner of this hard disk could prevent data loss if he'd install this software before.

A low health value alone does not neccessary mean that the hard disk will surely die in the near future (to verify this, a complete (hardware) examination is required), but there is a real chance for failure. The problem of the hard disk described above can not be easily detected but as we can see, there were some signs in the S.M.A.R.T. attributes. Other hard disks with other problems may work for a long time, months or years (even if they have lower health value). Problems caused by a short period (for example, too hot environment or an incorrect power supply) will not disappear. But after fixing the reasons of such problems (using a heatsink, fan or replacing the power supply), the hard disk lifetime can be extended. Anyway, it is recommended to examine the status of these hard disks constantly or regulary and to use them as secondary data storage only. Users should make sure that their important and valuable files are stored on an other hard disk also (with a higher "health" value).

Der Großdemonstrationstag in Dortmund ist weitgehend friedlich zu Ende gegangen. Mehr als 1500 Menschen hatten im Laufe des Tages bei einem Demonstrationszug und einer Kundgebung vor dem Opernhaus gegen einen Aufmarsch von Neonazis aus ganz Deutschland und dem europäischen Ausland demonstriert. Der Umzug der Rechten vom Südbad nach Körne, in dessen Verlauf es mehrfach zu Auseinandersetzungen mit der Polizei kam, zählte rund 1100 Teilnehmer.

Aus Sicht der Polizei verliefen die Demonstrationen trotz einiger Zwischenfälle, ruhig. "Das Einsatzkonzept und der starke Kräfteeinsatz haben entscheidend zum Erfolg beigetragen“, bilanziert der Leitende Polizeidirektor Dieter Keil als Einsatzleiter am Abend.

Sechs rechte Demonstranten wurden vorübergehend in Gewahrsam genommen. Die Polizei leitete

mehrere Strafverfahren wegen Körperverletzung, Tragens von Kennzeichen verfassungsfeindlicher Organisationen, Verdacht auf Landfriedensbruch sowie Verstöße gegen das Sprengstoff- und Versammlungsgesetz ein. Überrascht (??) war man vor allem von der aggressiven Stimmung im rechten Lager.

Der Großeinsatz für die Polizei mit mehreren tausend Beamten begann bereits am Morgen als ein Protestzug gegen Rechts mit rund 800 Teilnehmern um den Wall gezogen. Später versammelten sich nach offiziellen Polizeiangaben rund 1500 Demonstranten auf dem Platz der Alten Synagoge, um unter dem Motto "Bunt statt Braun" friedlich gegen den Neonazi-Aufmarsch zu protestieren.

"Wir wollen Euch nicht in unserer Stadt. Wir wollen Toleranz und Vielfalt", lautete unter dem Beifall der Menge die Botschaft von Hartmut Anders-Hoepgen, Sonderbeauftragter der Stadt für Vielfalt, Toleranz und Demokratie, an die Neonazis.

OB Langemeyer: Dortmund bleibt eine weltoffene Stadt
"Dortmund bleibt eine weltoffene Stadt, in der Rechtsextreme keine Chance haben", stellte auch Oberbürgermeister Dr. Gerhard Langemeyer als einer der Redner der Kundgebung vor dem Opernhaus fest. "Dortmund ist eine keine Hochburg der Rechten".  (Zu dieser Aussage bitte den Bericht auf Indymedia lesen!)

Ausdrücklich lobte der OB die Reaktionen von Schülern und Lehrern etwa des Helene-Lange-Gymnasiums, die sich gegen die Verteilung von rechtsextremistischem Propagandamaterial an ihrer Schule gewehrt hatten. "Es gibt eine breite Mehrheit gegen die neonazistische Ideologie", zeigte sich Langemeyer überzeugt.

Der Sprecher des "Arbeitskreises Dortmund gegen Rechtsextremismus", Eberhard Weber (DGB), kritisierte, dass Mahnwachen an drei Stolpersteinen zum Gedenken an die Opfer des Nationalsozialismus nicht zugelassen wurden, weil sie direkt an der Strecke des rechten Umzugs liegen. Besser wäre es gewesen, so einen Neonazis-Aufmarsch zu verbieten. "Das wäre die richtige demokratische Antwort gewesen."

Über 1000 Neonazis
Trotz des Verbots zogen nach der Kundgebung vor dem Opernhaus rund 700 Demonstranten zur

Gedenkstelle vor dem Wasserturm am Heiligen Weg. Von dort bewegte sich der nicht genehmigte Umzug bis vor die jüdische Kultusgemeinde an der Prinz-Friedrich-Karl-Straße. Einen Weitermarsch in Richtung rechter Wegstrecke verhinderte die Polizei. Der Großteil der Demonstrationsteilnehmer machte sich später wieder zurück auf den Weg zum Platz der Alten Synagoge. Trotz des friedlichen Verlaufs kündigte die Polizei an, rechtliche Schritte wegen Missachtung der Verbotsverfügung des Polizeipräsidenten zu prüfen.

Die Polizei hatte generell alle Hände voll zu tun, Auseinandersetzungen zwischen Antifaschisten und Neonazis zu verhindern. Schon nach dem Ende des Demonstrationszuges des linken Bündnisses "28.3." am Mittag hatten mehrere hundert, zum Teil vermummte Jugendliche versucht, den Treffpunkt der rechten Szene am Südbad zu erreichen. Starke Polizeikräfte verhinderten allerdings ein Zusammentreffen der verschiedenen Gruppen. Um eine Blockade der S-Bahn-Strecke wie bei der Neonazi-Demonstration am 1. Mai 2007 zu verhindern, hatte die Polizei vorsorglich sämtliche Eisenbahnbrücken der S 4 gesperrt und bewachte die Bahn-Trasse streng.

Im Viertel zwischen Kaiser- und Kronprinzenstraße setzte die Polizei immer wieder Jugendliche fest, die dem Anschein nach der linken Szene angehörten. Allerdings ist es inzwischen schwierig, linke Demonstranten von "Autonomen Nationalisten" zu unterscheiden. Eine weitere spontane, allerdings kurzfristig angemeldete Protestaktion veranstalteten Vertreter des Grünen-Kreisverbandes am Rande der rechten Wegstrecke am Robert-Koch-Platz.

Zu Zwischenfällen kam es aber auch innerhalb des Neonazi-Umzuges, der mit großer Verspätung startete und immer wieder ins Stocken geriet. Viele Teilnehmer zeigten nach Polizeieinschätzung ein hohes Gewalt- und Aggressionspotenzial. Bei Auseinandersetzungen mit der Polizei während und zum Ende des Marsches wurden wiederholt Feuerwerkskörper gezündet und Flaschen geworfen. 16 Polizeibeamte wurden dabei leicht verletzt.

Der rechte Umzug endete gegen 19.15 Uhr am S-Bahn-Haltepunkt Körne-West. Aus Zeitgründen hatten die Organisatoren allerdings auf zwei ursprünglich geplante Kundgebungen in Körne verzichtet. Bei der Abreise der Neonazis kam es erneut zu vereinzelten Auseinandersetzungen mit der Polizei.

Most of the end users will take the most note of your work. Does the extra pressure have a negative or positive effect on you?
Overall, it's pretty positive. I work best with a gun to my head, and I'm fairly confident in my ability to get a good job done quickly.

Is that a byproduct of making your living drawing commissions?
Could be. Or maybe I'm just an overconfident little mo-fo.

I'm an unfairly honest person. Some of my friends don't appreciate it, but Riley usually just punches me in the arm if I annoy her. She's got weak girly arms. ...so have I, but that's another story.

The two of you have been friends the longest, it seems. Do you ever feel jealous, having to share her with two other people?
What are you implying?

O...kay. Everyone else has given at least a small tidbit of information about their family lives. What can you tell us about yours?
It's not really tragic or difficult, so I'm sort of the black sheep in that respect. My adoptive parents live on 7th and Klaskanine, so I see them pretty often. I go over for dinner at least five nights out of seven, when I'm not working, anyway. They don't really come to my place often, because the living space is barely big enough for me, and Riley, when she visits. She's a petite little doll of a person though—she'd fit in a box of matches, that girl.

You sound very fond of her.
It's hard not to be. She's so genuinely upbeat, and I swear I've only ever seen her unhapy about nine times in the fifteen years we've been friends. Nobody's got half of her originality, and even less people can make me laugh as hard as she can. And she's nice, never puts anyone down for the sake of pride or a joke. She's—she's just the best person I know.

And you don't dislike having to spread the company to include two other guys?
Geez, even if I might be inclined to be jealous, Ando is gayer than an 80's music video and Squid is a nervous little kid. Stop asking me that kind of thing, it's embarrassing.

Alright, alright. Let's get to subject of art, then. What medium do you work with, primarily?
I may not be as good as the Paulsen kid, but I can handle basic traditional media, pencils, airbrushes, whatever you like. I don't really like painting though, even if it is fun to ponce about with an easel on the boat. Mostly I work with pixel-by-pixel stuff—tooled pixel art is lazy cheating in my book—and some flash animation. Commissions are usually splash art type stuff I work up in Photoshop or Painter. Before I started getting a bit of a following on deviantART and Elfwood, I used the mouse and occasionally scanned in sketches, but then I bought a tablet, so now I switch between the two, according to my mood.

deviantART and Elfwood, huh? So you're an internets celebrity?
Not remotely. I have some fans, and some regulars—mostly writers who like to commission character art and lit covers. I enjoy internet communication, though, and I admin a few forums in my spare time. Things on Gaia, a few independent-ish pixel art and gaming places. That sort of thing. These days I've only got time to check in with friends on a Castlevania forum.

So you have a lot of influences then?
You could say that. I look to the classics, Chrono Trigger, Treasure Hunter G... And newer stuff, like the Phoenix Wright franchise, before they started to tool the sprites a bit. The animations there are awesome.

What sort of style are you looking to use for the game you're all working on?
That's the thing—pixel art has sort of fallen out of use for hobby games, so I need to take a look at some of the rare games that have used it and been favorably received. The Sally games are a good example, but only the characters are really decent examples. And I feel really ridiculous looking it over—they're games about a hair salon and a day spa.

Still, part of your work is to play other games. That must be fun.
I guess. Gaming wise, I'm more of an RPG and FPS guy. This hobby stuff is a litle weak sometimes. I hope our next project is a little more groundbreaking.

What do you have in mind?
Dunno yet. The project now is going to further mine the Dash fans, with a few minigames. We figured that anything having to do with food is completely overdone and used the hell up, so we took a look at similar games that had no ties to food, like Fever Frenzy blah blah. The titles are always stupid, usually alliterations, and the same generally goes for the controllable character. If a game is called "Fashion Fits", then you can bet your entire savings that the character's name is going to start with an F.

So what focus did you eventually decide on?
It's a brilliant surpise. Riley's idea, actually—I swear she can get an idea staring at a paper bag.

Un'autentica berlusconata.

Senza apparente motivo, a pochi giorni dalla prevista accoglienza di Fini alla Festa Democratica di Firenze, il segretario del PD ha sparato l'ipotesi di mettere all'ordine del giorno alla Camera il voto agli immigrati. Una sorta di certificato di garanzia per gli unici con cui, secondo lo stesso Veltroni, il Governo mostra i muscoli e soprattutto le nocche dei pugni. Ma Walter sa benissimo che il primo ha parlarne fu qualche anno fa sorprendentemente proprio l'allora segretario di AN.

Tutti gli danno del matto, gli dicono che è una proposta fuori luogo, che non c'azzecca. A mo' di semaforo prodiano lui rimane fermo, immobile.

Arriva il giorno di Fini alla (purtroppo) fu festa de l'Unità. Domanda di rito sull'argomento. E il presidente della Camera ribadisce il suo favore alla proposta. Vai di mulinello. Bello grosso.

E giù il veto strasottolineato dalla Lega - probabilmente è sufficiente per loro il voto ai meridionali - dei colonnelli dell'ex (?) AN e addirittura la presa di posizione con asterisco di Berlusconi. Che non solo rigetta, ma rincara la dose paragonando Fini a Casini e dicendo che il presidente della Camera in questo modo vuole smarcarsi per superarlo a sinistra nella leadership conservatrice italiana.

Veltroni l'ha fatto apposta? Se sì, anche lui è per fortuna un genio del male. Se no, ha beccato comunque una buona cena. Propendo per la prima ipotesi.

En fait, il s'agit d'une reprise.  Selon un article de Marc Gendron, du Journal de Montréal, et repris par le site Canoë, trois lamelles de verre, parmi les quelques 6200 qui ornent le bâtiment de la Grande Bibliothèque (GB), ont éclaté sous l'effet de la chaleur.  La porte-parole de la GB, Claire-Hélène Lengellé, a spécifié qu'une seule lamelle a éclaté suite à un changement de température, alors que les deux autres se sont brisées en recevant les débris de la première.  Depuis l'ouverture de la GB, en avril 2005, ce sont environ une douzaine de ces lamelles qui ont éclaté, projetant à chaque fois des éclats de verre au sol.

La porte-parole de la GB dit même que c'est tout à fait normal, et que selon les fournisseurs, moins de la moitié de 1% des lamelles devraient éclater ainsi au cours des 10 premières années suivant leur installation, parce que c'est dans la nature du matériau utilisé.  Si l'on fait le calcul, la moitié de 1% de 6200, ça devrait donner 31 lamelles.  Or, depuis l'ouverture, on compte une douzaine de lamelles éclatées.  Donc, 31 moins 12, ça égale 19.  Prenons cela différemment; moins de 31, c'est tout au plus 30 lamelles qui devraient se briser normalement en dix ans.  À date, en un peu plus de trois ans (40 mois, dans les faits, soit exactement le tiers du délai de 120 mois), on en est rendus à 12, alors que l'on devrait n'en être qu'à 10.  Est-ce à dire que le matériau est d'une "petite nature", puisque moins résistant que prévu?

On va encore me dire que je suis de mauvaise foi, mais si je trouve l'in-gné-gneur qui a eu la brillante idée de faire l'extérieur d'un bâtiment en lamelles de verre trempé, au coût de 3 millions$, dans une ville comme Montréal, où le climat et les vibrations s'occupent de les faire tomber allègrement, et qui a convaincu tous les décideurs que si des lamelles allaient se briser, cela serait sans danger pour les gens qui passent en-dessous, puisque le périmètre de sécurité n'a été mis en place qu'en juillet dernier, je vais m'efforcer de lui descendre mon pied au cul moi-même!

Ce grand projet a été ouvert deux ans après que les libéraux de Jean Charest aient pris le pouvoir, mais fut certainement concocté - et approuvé - par les bien-pensants du parti québécois.  Évidemment, un tel bâtiment projette une très belle image, sur une photo, ou une carte postale, mais si on s'y tient trop près, on risque de recevoir des éclats de cette image dessus!  Nous savons tous que pour le parti de Pauline 1ère, l'image est très importante.  Même si tout tombe en ruines derrière la façade, l'image doit être impeccable.  Nous le voyons à tous les jours, par exemple dès que nous prenons la route, que derrière l'image, toute la société tombe en lambeaux.

En fait, la société québécoise me fait penser au logo de la compagnie d'autobus La Québécoise.  Vous avez sûrement déjà vu ces superbes autocars, de différentes couleurs, avec sur chaque côté, le logo et le nom de la compagnie, La Québécoise.  Le logo montre le visage d'une femme, portrait type que ce que l'on décrit comme la québécoise modèle; jeune, jolie, les cheveux au vent,...et les deux yeux fermés ben durs!  Les québécois, on se fout que des lamelles de verre nous tombent sur la tête, que des viaducs nous tombent sur la tête, que de la poussière nous tombe dans une plaie ouverte, en plein milieu d'une intervention chirurgicale, ce n'est pas grave, tant que l'image est sauve!

Auch auffallend ist nicht nur die Verbrüderung mit Israel, auch die verbrüderung mit "Amerika" ist vorhanden. So wird in diesem Kontext immer wieder mit Formulierungen wie "Proisraelisch" & Proamerikanisch" umsich geworfen, Kritiker werden gleich als "LinksGrünFaschistische Gutmenschen" oder "Freunde der Islamisten" bezeichnet.

Damit bliebe dann die Fahne Israels als letztes genuin antifaschistisches Symbol. Natürlich war das schon immer Blödsinn, und Israel-Solidarität in der BRD seit Gründung eine rechte Domäne. Die westdeutschen Eliten setzen bei der Restauration ihrer Macht trotz Niederlage und dem Ballast der NS-Verbrechen auf die geschichtsklitternde Reduktion des NS auf den Antisemitismus. Die Glorifizierung Israels und der mit Israel gleichgesetzten JüdInnen konnte nun als "Beweis" für den Bruch mit dem deutschen Faschismus herhalten. So verfuhren neben den Mainstream-Parteien vor allem die Springer-Presse, deren millionenfach an den deutschen Mann gebrachte "Lehre" aus dem 3.Reich sich spätestens nach den Frontberichten vom 6-Tage-Krieg als "Hätten wir die Juden statt ins KZ an die Front geschickt, hätten wir den Krieg gewonnen" zusammenfassen läßt. Nimmt man die NS-Rassentheorie ernst, hatten die Juden ihre Überlegenheit als Volk durch die Zerschlagung Nazi-Deutschlands "bewiesen" und sich damit Anerkennung verdient. Doch soweit wollten diejenigen, die sich mit dem argumentativen Turn der deutschen Eliten nicht abfinden und offen weiter den NS propagieren wollten, damals mehrheitlich nicht abfinden. Antisemitismus und Israelhass spielt damit in der marginalen deutschen NS-Szene (im Gegensatz zur sonstigen deutschen rechten) bis heute eine überragende Rolle. Doch der Anziehungskraft der sich dank im deutschen Diskurs dominierender Moslemhetze im Aufwind befindlichen israelsolidarischen Rechten (wie des Anti-Islam-Portals "Politically Incorrect") kann sich die NS-Szene inzwischen immer weniger entziehen. Der kurze Versuch, islamische Fundamentalisten und deren Regimes im Nahen Osten als potentielle Bündnispartner der deutschen Faschisten zu präsentieren, kann wohl als gescheitert angesehen werden. Inzwischen sind solche Töne bei der NPD in den Hintergund getreten, und die wichtigsten neofaschistischen Gruppierungen demonstrieren wieder lieber gegen "die Islamierung Deutschlands" als für Ahmadinedschad. Auch beim einflussreichen Nazi-Portal Altermedia ist die Pro-Islam-Linie längst aufgegeben worden, auch in den Kommentaren dominiert wieder die Hetze gegen die muslimischen "Überfremder". Da war es nur eine Frage der Zeit, bis Teile der NS-Fraktion der deutschen Rechten ihr Konzept des Ethnopluralismus konsequent zu Ende formulieren, und dem jüdischen Volk einen normalen Platz in der Welt der Völker und Stämme garantieren wollen. Eben dies macht Nasofi, deren Pamphlete den veralteten NS-Antisemitismus abschütteln, und eine Welt der strikt von einander getrennten homogenen Volkskörper propagieren. Für eine abzulehnende Ausnahme "Israel" ist da schlicht kein Platz in der Theorie.

Revoyons les faits.  Le 22 avril 2002, la gardienne des enfants du couple composé de Martin Brossard et de Liliane de Montigny, se rend au domicile familial, de la rue Booker, à Brossard.  Elle y voit le corps de Martin, balançant au bout d'une corde, dans le salon.  Les policiers, appelés sur place, découvrent les corps de Liliane, étranglée dans une chambre, et des deux fillettes du couple, Claudia, 4 ans, et Béatrice, 18 mois, noyées dans la baignoire.  L'article révèle que plus tard, des membres de la famille de Liliane, soit son père Marcel, et ses soeurs Karen et Sandra, logeaient une poursuite de 730,000$ contre la succession de Martin Brossard pour dommages, souffrances pour eux et les victimes, et les frais funéraires.  Suite à la décision de la Cour supérieure, de leur octroyer 70,000$, les poursuivants en ont appelé, parce que le jugement ne condamnaient la succession ni à des dommages punitifs, ni pour les souffrances infligées aux victimes, ni au paiement des frais funéraires, selon ce que rapporte l'article.

La seule décision que la Cour d'appel a modifié, par rapport au jugement original de la Cour supérieure, c'est l'allocation d'une somme supplémentaire de 11,102$, pour les frais funéraires.  L'article résume les raisons évoquées par la Cour d'appel, dans son jugement.

Pour ma part, je suis porté à dire qu'il s'agit là d'un jugement dangereux.  À mes yeux, les événements n'impliquaient que Martin Brossard, son épouse et ses enfants.  Compte tenu que Brossard était majeur, et que rien n'indique qu'il n'était pas sain d'esprit, au moment des événements, je ne vois pas en quoi la succession de Brossard aurait à payer quelque somme que ce soit à des membres de la famille de Liliane.  À moins, évidemment, que les membres de la succession de Brossard, visés par la poursuite, aient eu un quelconque lien avec les gestes.  S'il était prouvé, par exemple, que Martin avait subi des pressions, de la part de ces personnes, pressions qui auraient pu déboucher sur les événements tragiques.  Sinon, pourquoi poursuivre la succession de Martin Brossard?

Bien sûr, on ne connaît pas toute l'histoire.  Est-ce que des discussions, entre les deux familles, se seraient soldées par une discorde, au niveau des frais funéraires?  Est-ce que le famille de Martin Brossard a fait preuve de mépris, de suffisance, ou d'autres types de comportements reprochables, envers celle de Liliane de Montigny?  Est-ce à croire, d'un autre côté, que la famille de Brossard n'a subi aucun préjudice, n'a vécu aucune souffrance, suite à ces événements?  Le cas échéant, pourquoi ne poursuivent-ils pas à leur tour?

Malgré mon respect pour les deux familles en cause, ici, je persiste à croire que ce genre de jugement ouvre toute grande la porte à beaucoup d'abus.  Imaginez, vous pourriez être poursuivis parce que votre fils de 18 ans ou plus, ou votre frère, majeur, a commis un geste disgracieux envers quelqu'un.  Il me semble qu'un adulte est le seul responsable de ses propres gestes, et que l'on peut poursuivre les membres de la famille d'un individu jugé coupable dans le seul cas où celui-ci est mineur, ou encore lorsqu'il est prouvé qu'il n'est pas responsable de ses gestes.  Qu'on me corrige si j'ai tort, mais un tel jugement pourrait faire en sorte que toute victime d'un vol, d'une agression sexuelle, ou d'un autre crime, pourrait poursuivre la famille du prévenu, une fois celui-ci trouvé coupable.  Cela fait en sorte que l'on pourrait même être poursuivi en justice, suite à des gestes commis par des membres de sa famille, et ce même si l'on a pas de contacts directs avec ceux-ci.

Un jugement dangereux, à mes yeux.

Am simtit atata dragoste pentru el la inceput...atata drag! Uneori ma intreb pe care drum am pierdut intensitatea pasiunii acelui inceput ravasitor. Il priveam si vroiam sa fie al meu si al nimanui altcuiva. Vroiam ca trecutul lui sa iasa din peisajul relatiei noastre, vroiam ca trecutul meu sa fie sters cu desavarsire din mintea, gandurile si simtirile mele.

Si timpul a fost bun cu mine si mi-a adus in cale toata dragostea si toata afectiunea lui. Il simteam al meu mai tare cu fiecare clipa ce trecea pentru noi.

A venit clipa in care pentru o fractiune am privit in trecutu-mi si m-am regasit fericita, langa un om pe care l-am iubit cu toata fiinta si cu toata puterea mea de a iubi. Priveam in stanga si vedeam langa mine omul care dormea in patul nostru si pentru prima data m-am simtit straina de relatia in care ma bagasem cu atata incredere si speranta. Si straina am ramas din acel moment.

Si il iubesc, dar poate nu atat de mult cum ma iubeste el, nu atat de mult incat sa-mi mai doresc sa-i port in pantece copilul, nu atat de mult incat sa-i dau acordul in a cumpara verighetele pe care de altfel eu le-am ales pentru noi.
