With his Ayreon project, legendary multi-instrumentalist, composer, producer and vocalist Arjen Anthony Lucassen single-handedly revived the rock opera genre in the 1990s. Since then, Ayreon has achieved worldwide critical acclaim and success with albums charting in various countries. After bringing the Ayreon saga full circle with his previous release, 01011001, Lucassen returns to summarize the story of the Ayreon universe with his first-ever Ayreon compilation album, the 3CD + DVD package TIMELINE.

“I’ve been asked many times before to release an Ayreon compilation album, but it just didn’t feel right to present fragmented bits of story by lifting individual songs out of their greater contexts. However, my attitude changed after I completed my 2008 album 01011001, in which I connected all the previous Ayreon releases, musically as well as lyrically. Having completed the circle, so to speak, it seemed like a fitting time to put all things Ayreon into perspective and create an Ayreon timeline outlining the entire story.”

TIMELINE follows the thirteen-year evolution of the Ayreon sound from the 1995 debut The Final Experiment to the release of 01011001 in 2008. In addition to selecting essential tracks from the complete Ayreon discography, Lucassen wrote and recorded a new Ayreon song exclusively for TIMELINE. Titled Epilogue: The Memory Remains, this previously unreleased 9-plus-minute track introduces Ayreon fans to the clear, powerful voice of Jasper Steverlinck (Arid). Lyrically, The Memory Remains provides further insight into the final chapter of the Ayreon saga and what the future might hold for its characters.

In addition to The Memory Remains, TIMELINE’s 3 audio CDs comprise 32 essential Ayreon tracks (almost 4 hours of music), all carefully remastered specifically for this release. The accompanying DVD features nearly two hours of selected released and unreleased video clips, behind-the-scenes featurettes, 5.1 mixes, and live performances of Ayreon tracks (Star one and Stream of Passion versions). To illuminate the Ayreon story further, a timeline poster illustrating the Ayreon universe and 56-page booklet containing many new photos, all lyrics, and notes on the story are included in the TIMELINE package. The cover is a specially commissioned painting by traditional Ayreon cover artist, Jef Bertels. TIMELINE will be available from InsideOut Music on 7 November (GAS), 10 November (Europe), and early 2009 (N. America).

When asked what the release of TIMELINE means for the future of Ayreon, Lucassen replies, “I don’t see this as the end of Ayreon, but rather as a new beginning. I’ll definitely be recording some side projects before I even start thinking about re-inventing Ayreon. To keep things fresh for myself I’ve got to come up with a completely new concept for both the music and the lyrics. I hope I can do it...it will be definitely be quite a challenge!”

Some other things I did last week involved birthdays, my youngest daughter turned 5 and my mom turned 59 the same day, so there was a birthday barbecue. The return of regular season NFL Football came last Thursday with the reigning champion New York Giants facing the Washington Redskins. As many long time readers know, I'm a New England Patriots season ticket holder so I had the opening regular season game today (I am not discussing Tom Brady's injury at this time), so I tried out a few new recipes on the grill for the pre-game tailgate in the parking lot. Add my 4 hour fantasy football draft Saturday morning and you can see that I may have been on vacation but I still had a lot going on!

I spent a lot of time with new albums and live albums this past week. I have to catch up on reviews and I want to do a "live album week" at the end of the month so I pulled out a few candidates for those reviews.

These are the new albums that I have been rgiving serious rotation to the last couple of weeks. I've never really taken Avantasia and Judas Priest out of my weekly playlist, same goes for the new Ayreon but I've given it just a little more focus because there is so much to hear. The new albums from Royal Hunt, Motorhead, Cloudscape and Alice Cooper are all very good and I haven't stopped enjoying them. I just picked up the new Venom recently (along with something else I know I'm forgetting, watch for an update on my purchases soon) and it's.....well, Venom! Venom and Motorhead are so much alike in that they do the same thing over and over. Most of my listening went to advances of the new Iced Earth and Metal Church that I've had a few weeks now.....I'm preparing the Iced Earth review for this week, Metal Church next week.

That's a pretty good list of live albums! Some of these albums were instrumental in my discovering studio albums from the bands, some were important in my understanding of different eras of the bands, but all of them had a profound influence on me. The first two KISS ALIVE albums are cornerstones of my love for Heavy Metal and KISS but I would also have to put LIVE AFTER DEATH and WORLD WIDE LIVE right there with them because they were cassettes I played to death back when I was kid. I should probably add the Krokus and Judas Priest live records to that list too.

I did a lot of comparisons: PRIEST IN THE EAST vs. PRIEST.....LIVE!, LIVE EVIL vs. REUNION, all 3 Saxon live albums. Some are no brainers so I expect everyone to comment how bad PRIEST.....LIVE! & REUNION are to two all-time classic live albums. Some of these albums like the UFO records, the Royal Hunt, MSG and Jeff Scott Soto have become favorites over the years and you can't dispute Queen's legacy in the live arena. My plan for the "live album week" is to pick 7 out of this list, or maybe pick 6 and throw in a surprise, for reviews and memories.

Os fãns do gênero "sci-fi" terão com certeza mais um grande motivo para se orgulharem de Arjen Anthony Lucassen, que mais uma vez acertou em cheio em suas escolhas e em Janeiro deste ano lançou um dos mais completos álbuns de seu já famigerado projeto "Ayreon". "01011001" é o nome desta obra prima (Uma codificação binária para o número 89, que por sua vez representa a letra Y em uma linguagem de programação ASCII.) que consegue juntar uma grande porção de História com uma grande porção de musicalidade e misturá-las na quantia certa. O resultado desta receita pra ninguém botar defeito, você confere agora.

Como já era de se esperar de Arjen Lucassen, seu novo duplo conta com a participação de verdadeiras feras da cena atual. No que diz respeito aos vocalistas, alguns já conhecidos de participações anteriores no próprio Ayreon como Anneke van Giersbergen e Simone Simons (Epica) e outros que já estão no mercado há tempos, mas chegam fresquinhos para o projeto como Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of Salvation), Tom S. Englund (Evergrey), Jorn Lande e muitos outros. Para somar à competência desses incríveis vocalistas, Arjen conta com um time de instrumentistas tão fabuloso quanto, e nesses estão inclusos Michael Romeo (Symphony X), Derek Sherinian (Planet X, ex-Dream Theater) e o já amigo de longa data Joost van den Broek (After Forever), sendo assim, impossível deixar de imaginar que a presença dos teclados se faz completa, e é acompanhada pelas melodias e harmonias viciantes provenientes das guitarras

Passando das informações técnicas sobre o álbum, vamos às considerações práticas e explicações.

O duplo é dividido de maneira a separar os Forever (Misteriosos seres extragalácticos que têm mais ligação conosco e com a criação de toda a vida e do universo do que podemos imaginar) e os Humanos. Sugestivamente, deu-se ao primeiro CD o nome de "Y" (nome do planeta de origem dos Forever) e ao segundo CD o nome de "Earth". O time de vocalistas foi dividido entre essas duas raças, mas isso não quer dizer que seriam separados pelos CDs. Como dito antes, a ligação entre os Humanos e os Forever na história criada por Arjen, é muito maior do que podemos prever.

[Y]

A abertura do álbum fica por conta da auto-explicativa "Age of Shadows", que nos revela de cara a retomada dos padrões de ficção científica que sempre existiram no Ayreon, mas que foram deixados em segundo plano no álbum imediatamente anterior, The Human Equation (o que não quer dizer que não tenha sido fascinante) e junto a isso traz o peso e a idéia central desta etapa do álbum: As coisas foram longe demais, até mesmo para os Forever, e parece chegada a hora de pagar o preço de sua imortalidade, conhecimento e desenvolvimento desenfreado. Com a base sólida deixada pela abertura, "Comatose" vem confirmando as expectativas da falta de esperança para o povo de "Y" e toda essa melancolia vem agravada na voz de Jorn Lande. Arrastados por isso, na progressiva "Liquid Eternity" chegamos à situação atual na qual se encontra o mundo dos Forever e seus habitantes, onde as premissas negativas foram confirmadas. Aqui o destaque fica por conta da participação em massa dos vocalistas, sete ao todo, com uma interpretação vocal fascinante e assustadora.

Seguindo adiante no tempo, “Connect the Dots” nos leva ao planeta Terra nos dias de hoje, e estabelecendo um paralelo entre “Y” e a Terra, percebe-se, sem muita dificuldade,  que os humanos seguem o mesmo rumo de seus criadores, com sua busca incansável e frenética por conhecimento e desenvolvimento. De volta a terra natal dos Forever na calma “Beneath the Waves“, o passado próspero deles é retomado através das lembranças e lamentações sobre tudo que foi perdido. Aqui o destaque fica por conta da apaixonante voz de Anneke van Giersbergen e da incrível melodia da música. Talvez por um único momento, a esperança retorna ao álbum e em “New Born Race” os Forever resolvem depositá-la naquela que seria, talvez, a mais ousada das experiências, e o resultado: a propriamente dita nova raça. A humanidade. Alguém falou em pedir ajuda? Não. Aqui são debatidos os direitos que os criadores teriam sobre as vidas de suas criações e se seria certo tomar-lhes a vida para salvar as suas próprias. Pegando carona nessa experiência, “Ride the Comet” traz a explicação do invento da humanidade e com uma sonoridade épica e progressiva.

Encerrando a primeira parte do duplo, “Web of Lies” pode até ser considerada a mais fraca das músicas, a menos progressiva, mas traz em cinco simples estrofes a informação de que, na humanidade, ainda é forte aquilo que os Forever perderam há muito tempo: Seus sentimentos e emoções. Essa interpretação fica por conta de Simone Simons e Phideaux Xavier, que demonstram uma paixão surgida em relacionamentos por internet, e a facilidade com que os sentimentos mudam e se transformam na raça humana.

[Earth]

A segunda parte do duplo se inicia com a impressionante "The Earth Extinction”, mais um show de interpretação vocal somada à melodia que se encaixa perfeitamente com a história. Uma daquelas músicas que se ouve no "repeat" sem parar. Decididos de que usar a humanidade seria sua única forma de salvação, os Forever iniciam uma espécie de anexação à nossa raça, se estabelecendo como uma presença invisível incorporada à mente de toda a humanidade. Através dessa anexação, os Forever passam a ter novamente contato direto com as emoções humanas, e sem se conter, passam a influenciar nas nossas ações, sendo responsáveis por uma súbita explosão de conhecimento e desenvolvimento entre os nossos. Essa interferência é descrita em "Waking Dreams". "The Truth Is In Here" nos dá indícios de que a intervenção dos Forever não passa despercebida, porém quem poderia acreditar em algo assim?...

Na sequência, "Unatural Selection" vem pra marcar o "01011001" como um legítimo álbum de Arjen Lucassen. A música ainda se destaca pelas referências feitas por Arjen, que remetem alarmantemente a acontecimentos e registros do mundo real. Neste ponto, o extraordinário avanço no desenvolvimento e conhecimento da tecnologia e sociedade sobrecarrega a "máquina humana" e cometendo o mesmo erro pela segunda vez, os Forever levam a raça humana ao mesmo destino da sua. Numa tentativa desesperada de impedir a definitiva queda dos seres humanos, em "River of Time" nos é concedido o conhecimento e a capacidade de interferir na linha do tempo através do projeto "The Final Experiment" (referência ao primeiro álbum da saga.). Os avisos sobre o apocalipse humano são transmitidos ao passado em "E=MC2", na esperança de uma mudança de comportamento que pudesse salvar a nossa existência. Mas nada muda, e os humanos são levados ao colapso. Aqui, Arjen ainda deixa uma mensagem a seus ouvintes, transportando para nosso mundo a possibilidade de ocorrer aqui, o que ocorre em sua história, e nos diz que o resultado dessa ultima experiência, está em nossas mãos.

Encerrando esta obra prima de Arjen, a magnífica "The Sixth Extinction" culmina com o fim de tudo, porém nos deixa uma esperança. A alma conhecida como "Migrator" (Referência ao álbum "The Universal Migrator ") retorna com os Forever por algum motivo ainda não conhecido de fato, e agora tudo depende dessa nova etapa da história do universo.

Sem dúvidas um dos melhores lançamentos da saga de Ayreon, que traz uma avalanche de explicações sem de fato terminar a história, nos deixando com um gostinho de "quero mais" e na expectativa para o próximo lançamento.

Hoy les voy a hablar de Stream of Passion, un grupo que conozco de hace poco tiempo pero con un sonido metalero sinfónico progresivo con tintes góticos que me ha gustado bastante, además de que tiene un origen muy interesante.

La historia comienza en 2003, cuando el músico holandés Arjen Lucassen lanza una convocatoria en su sitio web para encontrar una voz femenina, la ganadora participaría en la grabación de su disco The Human Equation, sexto con su proyecto Ayreon. Una de las participantes fue Marcela Bovio, cantante del grupo regiomontano de metal progresivo atmosférico Elfonia.

Lucassen, quien ha trabajado con grandes cantantes femeninas del ambiente metalero como Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), Floor Jansen (After Forever) o Simone Simons (Epica) quedó tan impresionado por la voz de la mexicana que no solo la designó como la voz de la esposa de Me (Personaje de su rock opera The Human Equation), sino que además se propuso formar una banda donde Marcela pudiera explotar su talento musical y tuviera la libertad de experimentar, dando nacimiento a Stream of Passion.

Para completar el grupo Lucassen reclutó músicos desconocidos pero con gran talento, dando como resultado la siguiente formación: Marcela Bovio (Voz, violín y letras) Arjen Lucassen ( Guitarras y Música) Lori Linstruth (Guitarra Lider) Johan van Stratun (Bajo) Alejandro Millán (Piano) y Davy Mickers (batería).

En 2005 hacen su debut Embrace The Storm, un disco muy bien ejecutado, muy sinfónico, con riffs potentes que hacen una mezcla muy interesante con la melancólica voz de Marcela. En general no hay grandes muestras individuales de virtuosismo pero en conjunto logran un sonido muy completo, con algunos pasajes con ese intrincado toque progresivo al que nos tiene acostumbrados Lucassen en Ayreon.

Hasta la fecha el trabajo de Stream of Passion ha sido muy bien recibido por fans y críticos del ambiente metalero, hicieron una gira por Europa con bastante éxito, tal vez el único pero que le encontraría sería la evidente mano de Lucassen, quien se piensa concentrar en Ayreon y al parecer abandona al grupo para que sigan su camino y evolucionen en su propio estilo. Así que habrá que esperar a su siguiente producción para saber si su éxito se debía a la presencia del Sr. Lucassen o si tienen la capacidad para sorprendernos con algo de calidad.

De cualquier manera considero que Stream of Passion es un grupo que promete hacer cosas interesantes y al que hay que seguirle la huella, para muestra de lo trae su Embrace the Storm les dejo fragmentos de dos rolitas que tienen en su sitio (Sorry no pude poner canciones completas) y un video para que se den una mejor idea de su sonido.

Judas Priest - Nostradmaus (2008): I worked overnoght shift last night/this morning (12am-8am) and I played this twice on the MP3 player.....a nice way to kill almost four hours! I still think there is more to like on this album if you push your expectations aside.

Ayreon - 01011001 (2008): I've been in the music room since about 10am this morning and I have spun both discs of this album twice. I bought this latest Arjen Lucassen masterpiece the day it came out earlier in the year but I haven't really listened. I gave this a couple of spins and put it in the pile, it's excellent but there is so much going on musically that you really need to sit down and listen, it's not background music at all.

White Lion - Return Of The Pride (2008): I admit to liking White Lion back in the day and I still give their albums a spin from time to time. I followed Mike Tramp's solo career not as closely but a new album under the "White Lion" banner had me interested. I've had this since it came out and only gave it a couple of spins.

U.D.O. - Mastercutor (2007): I am a very stupid man! I passed on this album time and time again all of last year and I finally broke down and grabbed it back in January. Probably one of the best albums released in 2007 and that means it would have easily been in my Top Albums list. Rene.....you were right, excellent CD!

The Who - Quadrophenia (1973): My current obsession with The Who has nothing to do with the current accolades the band is getting from VH-1 and other media outlets, it's due to hearing a block of TOMMY songs during a "block party weekend" while on my vacation. Nothing is better than the local stations playing 3 or 4 tunes in a row from a certain band! '5:15' has been one of my faves Who grooves for years.

KISS - Creatures Of The Night (1982): My second favorite KISS album and probably their most metallic.

Actual Fantasy datato 1996 è l'unico album che non narra alcuna storia ben precisa. Compaiono solamente 3 cantanti e 3 strumentisti. Alcuni temi che ispirarono Arjen Lucassen nella composizione di questo album, si possono ritrovare nei due album successivi Universal Migrator Part 1: The Dream Sequencer e Universal Migrator Part 2: Flight of the Migrator.

Into the Electric Castle (1998). Questo doppio album narra le vicende di 8 personaggi provenienti da 8 diversi periodi storici, che si ritrovano in uno strano luogo senza tempo e senza spazio ("place of no-time and no-space"). Solo una voce farà loro da guida all'interno di quest'avventura alla ricerca della via d'uscita attraverso molti ostacoli e pericoli prima di arrivare al misterioso castello elettrico. Questo album di carattere decisamente psichedelico viene raccontato attraverso le voci di 8 cantanti (ognuno dei quali interpreta un personaggio) e grazie a 11 strumentisti.

I due album, facenti parte del capitolo The Universal Migrator (2000) (uscirono come unico doppio album solo 4 anni dopo con l'etichetta InsideOut) narrano la storia dell'ultimo essere umano sopravvissuto, emigrato in una colonia su Marte. Nel primo capitolo del racconto, Universal Migrator Part 1: The Dream Sequencer, quest'uomo comincia un viaggio a ritroso nel tempo attraverso i pensieri ed i ricordi di alcune persone vissute nell'epoca umana, utilizzando un dispositivo chiamato Dream Sequencer. Questo primo album, in stile progressive rock, viene definito dallo stesso Arjen Lucassen come di genere atmospheric. In seguito, il protagonista di questo viaggio virtuale viene proiettato indietro nel tempo fino al big bang. In questo secondo album, Universal Migrator Part 2: Flight of the Migrator (genere heavy metal), come nel primo, compaiono, come ormai di consuetudine, diversi cantanti e molti strumentisti di diversa estrazione musicale. Citiamo, tra gli altri ospiti di questo concept album, Bruce Dickinson front-man dell'ormai storico gruppo heavy metal degli Iron Maiden.

Nel 2004 viene pubblicato The Human Equation, rilasciato nuovamente come un doppio CD in un'unica uscita discografica. Come in Into the Electric Castle, tutti i cantanti, presenti in questo racconto, hanno un loro ruolo (personaggi ed emozioni). Lucassen è sempre alle prese con la fantascienza ma, in questa occasione, il luogo di questo viaggio è la mente di un uomo entrato in coma in seguito ad uno strano incidente automobilistico, avvenuto in pieno giorno. Durante 20 giorni (tanti quante sono le tracce presenti nell'album), l'uomo Me, impersonato da James LaBrie (cantante dei Dream Theater), si trova a lottare con le sue emozioni cercando di non esserne sopraffatto.

Dopo il 2004, con il cambiamento di casa discografica da Transmission Records a InsideOut, Arjen ripropose i suoi più celebri lavori e, di alcuni di essi, realizzò nuove versioni.

Come già anticipato, le due parti dell'album The Universal Migrator vennero unite in doppio album. Actual Fantasy uscì in versione Revisited, con nuove parti di percussioni, basso, sintetizzatore e flauto e corredato di un aggiuntivo CD con contenuti video (DVD) in tecnologia Dolby Surround. Il 2005, nella ricorrenza del 10° anniversario della nascita del progetto Ayreon, fu l'anno dell'uscita della riedizione dell'album d'esordio The Final Experiment con un bonus disc in cui vengono proposte versioni inedite di alcuni brani dell'album in chiave semi-acustica.

In gennaio 2008, dopo quattro anni dall'ultimo album in studio, esce 01011001. La divisione in due cd rispecchia fortemente l'ambientazione: il primo, ambientato sul pianeta Y (luogo della razza Forever), ed il secondo, sul pianeta Terra (Earth, luogo della razza umana). Cripticamente, Lucassen, congiunge il titolo dell'opera con il nome del pianeta Y; infatti, in codice ASCII, 01011001 significa proprio "y".

01011001 - Ayreon

Obra de Arjen Lucassen, un músico holandés hmm no tendrá algo que ver con el holandés errante? estos holandeses XD el proyecto uno de sus tantos recibe su nombre por el vocablo del inglés antiguo "Ay" y de la terminación "on" que tiene que ver con cosas del presente (neutron, electron, ciclotron, etc).

El parecido con su nombre, es pura coincidencia.

Escuchar y leer las letras de The Final Experiment deja un mensaje sin querer queriendo, según Arjen que no es novedad, sino por la forma en que se presenta.

El estilo musical (rock ópera) es en general suave y acorde con cada sección del relato. Tiene un leve toque de "medieval" para llevarlo a uno a esos tiempos pasados en los que se supone que transcurre el relato. Acompaña la voz encantadora de Astrid van der Veen, entre muchos otros artistas que participaron en esta obra.

De aquí en adelante un pequeño resumen del relato.

Se trata de un experimento realizado en el futuro (2084 DC), llamado "Telepatía en el Tiempo", que consiste en un programa capaz de enviar imágenes y mensajes a personas del pasado. Quien recibió el mensaje telepático fue un juglar ciego llamado Ayreon, en la Gran Bretaña del siglo VI, en plena Edad Oscura. La misión era que éste advirtiera al mundo del declive que sufriría la humanidad en el futuro, para cambiar ese terrible futuro por uno próspero.

A lo largo del álbum se relata sobre todo lo que tuvo que pasar Ayreon al cantar de sus visiones, le acusaban de loco, brujo y charlatán, y fue desterrado de su pueblo. Ayreon hallaba confuso todo lo que estaba sucediendo...

Su mundo siempre negro pues era ciego cambió de repente a proyecciones horribles grabadas sobre su cerebro. Luego comprendió que eran visiones del futuro, pero aún no terminaba de comprender su importancia...

Luego de ser desterrado, la buena fortuna lleva a Ayreon a Camelot, donde el Rey Arturo le da la bienvenida como un valioso juglar, y le pide cantar para su corte. El Rey se muestra complacido con sus canciones.

En algunos momentos Ayreon se muestra reacio a aceptar su destino, pero no tiene más opción. Finalmente comprende todo. Describe cómo la tecnología domina la pasión, y como las computadoras gradualmente controlan a la humanidad, las guerras absurdas que han surgido, como se habrían dañado los aires, las aguas, y las tierras, y la posibilidad de la destrucción total con sólo el presionar de un botón.

Merlín, el gran mago y profeta del Rey Arturo, observa a Ayreon, y considera que debe intervenir... Merlín no cree en las palabras de Ayreon, y sugiere que debe ser silenciado. ¿Envidia, quizas? Claro, no fue él quien tuvo la visión

Ayreon desesperadamente intenta demostrar su honestidad a Merlín, pero éste no le escucha y le lanza un hechizo, para arrepentirse luego, pues tuvo una visión que prueba que Ayreon tenía razón. Entonces, jura que su palabra será difundida en el siglo XX, esperando que no sea demasiado tarde, y que la humanidad preste atención a estas premoniciones...

"I'm very inspired and have already recorded three long instrumental songs - almost 30 minutes of material! The music I've recorded so far has some similarities to Ayreon, maybe a bit closer to Dream Sequencer than to Flight Of The Migrator. But there are enough differences even at this early stage to tell me that it won't be an Ayreon album. Contrary to Ayreon I'll try to work with just one singer this time. I have no idea yet who that will be (though there are plenty of options, including myself).

Nor do I know what the concept will be - or if there will even be a concept at all! I'm definitely not consciously trying to be different or re-invent the wheel with this one, but a definite style is gradually taking shape and it feels good!"

Conocí esta banda gracias a Last.fm, en una de esas radios que uno crea. Gustó, gustó y mucho. Asi que fui y adquirí el último disco, 01011001. No tenia muchas espectativas, ya que salvo esa canción on line no tenia muchas referencias como para saber de ante mano con que me iba a encontrar en este disco.

El disco arranca con todo con un buen riff pesado, para luego entrar en una parte más atmosferica del tema si se quiere para luego retomar la "pesadez". Este patrón se repite en todo el disco, subidas y bajadas de ritmo brillantemente ejecutadas, que aunque en texto parezca monotono o cansador, creanmé que para nada lo es.

Leyendo las letras de los temas me encuentro que las mismas cuentan una historia, e investigando descubro que esta historia se viene desarrollando varios discos atras!, otro punto para Lucassen. Para los fanáticos de Ayreon deben saber de que estoy hablando, para los que nunca escucharon esta banda y para aquellos fans que todavia no adquirieron el disco les adelanto de qué trata este último. En este disco aprenderemos como los "Forever" (alienígenas creacion de Lucassen) se convierten en unos entes privados emocionalmente y como crean a los humanos y los "siembran" en el planeta Tierra para recuperar sus emociones a traves de ellos.

El disco es una obra maestra de principio a fin. No hay partes que resulten densas o repetitivas. La historia que propone hace el escuchar muchisimo más interesante ya que nos sumerge todavia más en la melodia. Y el hecho de tener un reparto vocal más que extenso intesifica aún más la experiencia.

Todo comenzó cuando Lucassen llamó a Lee para ver si estaba interesado en participar, a lo que el vocalista suizo dio un sí por respuesta.

Lee conocía al músico holandés por una audición que hizo con la banda Vengeance en 1989 que lideraba por entonces el propio Lucassen. Steve afirma que las demos que le envió Lucassen de su nuevo trabajo le “volaron la cabeza”. El trabajo de grabación de las voces de la canción que le tocó a Lee se realizó en los estudios de Arjen Lucassen en un solo día. Lee ha definido el resultado de la grabación como poderoso, épico, con mucho color y con un toque moderno que aporta momentos mágicos. Además piensa que puede extender su nombre y el de Gotthard a públicos diferentes a los habituales de la banda.

Una de las principales bazas del disco, además, es poder escuchar a un buen puñado de buenas voces, entre las que se encuentran Hansi Kursch (Blind Guardian), Steve Lee (Gotthard), Simone Simons (Epica), Jorn Lande, Daniel Gildenlöw (Pain of salvation), entre muchos otros. Lo curioso es que muchos de los cantantes que colaboran en el disco o bien no los conocía o bien no me habían llamado la atención, pero francamente, después de escucharlo intensivamente creo que voy a dar una oportunidad a sus respectivos grupos xD

Por otro lado, tenemos la oportunidad de escuchar las colaboraciones del genial Michael Romeo (Symphony X) a la guitarra, Lori Linstruth (Stream of Passion) como muestra de que también hay mujeres que sepan tocar bien la guitarra eléctrica xD, Joos van den Broek (After Forever), Ed Warby (Gorefest) a la bateria,...

En conclusión, un trabajo variado, muy bien acabado y con un gran y buen elenco de colaboraciones. Os dejo un par de vídeos del album:

“On Planet Y, the seafaring “Forever'” have long ago forgone their emotions as well as becoming dependent on machines, in order to become immortal. Longing to rediscover emotions, the Forever send their DNA to planet Earth using a comet as vessel. The vessel reaches Earth seeding humanity, and causes the extinction of the dinosaurs. Humans rise and through them, Forever are able to relive lost emotions. However, Forever's continued meddling with humanity in order to make them evolve faster have disastrous consequence when their physical and mental evolution goes faster than their moral development; humanity starts becoming dependent on machines, they start slowly losing their emotions, and worst of all head toward the path to their own extinction. Forever must then orchestrate a way to help humanity save themselves, or should they even bother...is the experiment over?”

Concept aside, this is a pretty interesting metal album. On the first count, it begins with a ten and a half minute epic, “Age Of Shadows.”  As mentioned before, this track is a concept and it has enough sounds, textures and musical weavings to make any music theorist happy like a child in a 24-hour, all you can open n' ride toy store.  The keyboards and guitars sound crisp and clean on here and what’s interesting to note is Lucassen’s choice of vocalists.  Many have contributed to the overall feeling of this album and on “Age Of Shadows,” the highlights of this epic is at 4:40 from which guitar arpeggios flutter like shards of burnt paper in the wind and at 6:16 where the female vocals recite the album’s title 01011001.  Numbers never sounded so good and so epic… seriously.

The production on 01011001 is top notch.  All the instruments are clearly heard and nothing is left behind.  There is a sense of opera throughout the entire album especially on the later portions of the disc, including “Comatose,” “Liquid Eternity” and “Beneath The Waves.”  After a while however, the album does become a bit too much to take in one sitting.  This is not a bad thing, but with the fifteen tracks presented here, the average song length is a little over seven minutes.  The album is epic, the guitars are crunchy, the leads are ear ripping and the keyboards and vocals are top notch, but the best way to listen to this album is in two sittings, one for each disc.  This seems to be the only flaw throughout the entire sitting.  Aside from that, Lucassen has done a great job interweaving melodies and classical themes throughout his visions and epic musical passages.  The only criticism here is that it stretches a bit too long for most of the part.

01011001 is definitely a good experiment in modern metal of epic proportions, but it is also definitely not for everyone. This also shows that in certain parts of the world, metal still is a way of life and that people eat this music up like ice cream on a hot summer day.  To paraphrase the mood on this album and it’s overall theme of experimental science gone wrong, here’s a quote from Arnold’s famous line in “Predator”:   "Run! Go! Get to the chopper!"

Brainstorm - Downburst (2008) - $10: Good thing comes to those who wait! I tried to pick this up the day of release two weeks ago but the local shop only stocked one copy. I didn't understand this because it's a Metal Blade release and they are usually well-stocked. I still got the sale price because there were two price tags and I asked for the lower one. Saved $5!

Ayreon - 01011001 (2008) - $18: When Arjen Anthony Lucassen puts together an Ayreon project, it's usually one of the best releases of the year. I got into Ayreon late but I've started to go back and collect all the back catalogue, it's hard to find all the limited editions with the bonuses. This album had 3 versions: the regular 2 CD version, the limited edition 2 CD & DVD in a small box, and the deluxe edition with the 2 CDs, DVD, and expanded booklet in a special case. I opted for the limited edition at $18 so I could have the special DVD. I would have paid for the deluxe edition but the extra $12 was all for packaging. I know this will compete for Album of the Year on many lists.

Avantasia - The Scarecrow (2008) - $10: Edguy's Tobias Sammet really has a great side project in Avantasia. Another concept project chock full of guests, kind of like Ayreon, I've been lookin forward to this release for a while. What I find interesting is that there were over ten copies of this stocked at the local shop. Either Avantasia is a huge seller in Rhode Island or the person doing the ordering is a huge fan! Actually, the guy running the Metal section is a big fan and I was able to listen to most of the album while browsing.

Iron Maiden - Live After Death DVD (2008) - $14: This is an absolute must fave DVD! I have been waiting for this to be released for years, I had a copy of the VHS a friend made me but that died years ago. Disc 1 is the original concert. Disc 2 has the History of Maiden Pt.2, the documentary Behind the Iron Curtain, Rock In Rio '85, and a 15 minute 'Ello Texas. Maiden really knows how to put together a DVD package because this is way over five hours of classic footage. This DVD will be hard to take from the #1 spot of my Top DVDs of 2008 in December. I think I've watched it four times already!

Dio - Intermission (1986) - $15: Picked this up from a great seller on Ebay that I've dealt with many times. This is a Japanese pressing of Intermission and is in mint condition. There are more than a few copies on Ebay but they have prices in the $20+ range for the regular release, I got a deal of the Japanese import. The CD was $10 and the shipping $5, very affordable from Japan. This purchase takes Intermission off the WANTED list.
