Our family watched the forum that Saddleback motivational speaker Rick Warren hosted with the presid

Our family watched the forum that Saddleback motivational speaker Rick Warren hosted with the presidential candidates last weekend. Warren said something that caught my interest at one point, as he was asking his questions:

"We're 19th in the world in education, and yet we're 1st in incarcerations."

That statement reminded me, public school is about to start up again in our area. We don't have any crops to harvest here in the middle of Anchorage, so we don't take summers off from homeschooling. We go with a ten-weeks-on, two-weeks-off schedule year-round. That seems to offer us a lot more flexibility, and provides more learning time for our children.

What stood out to me about that statement from Rick Warren was the secular math equation that was hidden inside it:

Young person + Education = Moral adult

Here's another version of it that we see all the time:

Incarcerated person + Education = Moral person who won't go back to jail

The only problem is, neither one of those is a true equation. Education in and of itself does not create a moral being. Yet that is exactly what Warren and the rest of the non-Christians in our society believe about education. We continue spending phenomenal amounts of money on the public education system in America, and yet it's not producing the result of their little math equation.

How is it possible that the Virginia Tech shooter could do what he did? He was taking high-level poetry and English classes! If the education equals salvation mantra were true, he would have no logical reason to kill dozens of his classmates. Likewise, providing criminals with an education so they can learn a trade, has little impact on recidivism rates.

One thing that the public schools are most assuredly not teaching children in America is a system of ethics that can be utilized to make them discern right from wrong, good from evil. In fact, they're taught the opposite, that we must NOT judge between one thing and another. That would be judgmental, and that is something that our postmodern age cannot abide.

Something that is definitely not taught in the classroom, nor are public school students taught how to apply it, is the moral law contained in the inerrant, infallible, Holy Word of the Bible. The sum of human behavior, and ethics, and the how-to of how to love your neighbor, is available in the Ten Commandments. Yet that is the subject that is absolutely taboo in the classroom. Some public school teachers go so far as to call it child abuse when you teach your children about what's in the Bible.

So as professing Christians cart their children off to the public schools this week, our prayer is that you will consider several things. One is the freedom that home schooling your children provides. Freedom from the state, freedom from the errors of the dogmatic scientific community which rules the education system, freedom to teach your children while using the Bible as your central text. Christ is, after all, the starting point for all knowledge.

We would also pray that you would think about this equation:

Young person + Education ≠ Salvation

Hi Reader,

Hi Reader,

Well, it's almost the time of summer that most kids dread: the end of summer vacation and the beginning of school. I was suddenly awoken by this thought courtesy of the annual walk-through at school where I got my locker, classes, books, new P.E. clothes, blah blah blah.

I still am in shock that I made it to high school. Seriously. In second grade I just wrote random numbers for multiplication half the year and didn't understand it until third grade, at which, most of my classmates already mastered it.

I have trouble comprehending things. One of my most embarrassing moments involved standing there like a fool while my P.E. teacher explained to me for the fifth time how to play a certain game and all my fellows were sighing at how much of an idiot I am. Ah, and let's not forget the three times I got lost during cross-country meets because I don't really apprehend where that head guy was pointing to. Yep, bad times... bad times.

Anyway, school... I'm glad that I can see my friends more than over the summer, but I am not so ecstatic about the classes. Because, believe it or not, geeks like me who actually have the stupidity to read for fun, don't like school. Or love it, if that's what you thought I was going to say after you read that sentence. I would rather stay in bed, I would rather spend my time on the computer and stuff like that, but I need an education if I'm ever going to make something out of my life. Ugh.

Back to that place where you get picked on, back to that place where work takes over your life, back to that place where you are forced to partake in sports and look like a total idiot, back to school. Ugh.

Today was the first day of school for my kiddos. Seems like the summer sure went fast, but the girls are excited by the prospect of a new year.

Madison is a 5th grader, so she's the "senior" class in the elementary school and she gets a locker this year. She's got a great attitude and she's very happy to get back to school. She was ready for school at 6:15am this morning.

Mackenzie isn't quite as happy about going back as her sister, but she had a good first day. She has one of Madison's favorite teachers as her home room teacher.

Hope springs eternal and we're looking forward to a good year.

Making sure your promotions are up to date with Holidays and events is a great way to bring in customers from your website.

School is starting this week all over the United States. Students from Elementary to College age are preparing to primp, and look their best to begin the school year. Your salon could benefit from some promotions and specials designed for the back-to-school rush. Here are some promotional ideas that you could use. Take these ideas, get creative, and put the promotions on the front page or specials area of your website!

#1. A package designed for students. If you think about it, students won't spend as much on their beauty expenses as someone else would. Encourage new students to come into your salon by designing a package especially for them. A trim/cut , express manicure, and pedicure might be an option. Think of what services you offer that could be done quickly, and the price could be cut a little bit. Those will attract students looking to primp for school but, it won't break their bank.

#2. Skin Care for students. This is a promotion especially for those of you who offer skin care services. Many teenagers, and young adults deal with skin problems constantly. Put a special promotion out there for students that offer a series of facials or, acne treatments for a cheaper price.

#3. Two for one or buy one and save. This is one for the hair salons. A lot of Mothers will bring their kids in for haircuts and trims at the beginning of the school year. Offering a "buy one haircut get one free" or "buy one haircut and get the second 1/2 off" will attract the Mothers who need to save a little after spending money on school supplies. To really add the back to school flair, you can even set an age limit (such as "for children 12 and under").

#4. Offer school supplies. Everyone wants to save on school supplies. A quick trip to your local dollar store or, bargain store will give you some great school supplies for a very cheap price. Put up a sign in your window, and the special on your website letting everyone know that you are offering free supplies to students who come in. If you don't want to spend so much on offering school supplies for every person, you could change this by having a drawing. Every student who comes in could enter the contest for supplies. The winner would receive school supplies that are appropriate for most ages.

#5. Be simple. You don't have to think up a big promotion to attract students, and their Mothers. You can easily put up a sign in your window or, a message on your website saying that you welcome students. Or, a catchy back to school phrase that will attract them. This requires just a few keyboard strokes and, printing out a new poster. However, it will bring in new customers who already have gearing up for school on their mind.

But if you are thinking about school, here are some things to think about:

B.A. Orientation is on September 2 at RDC - if you're a second year or above B.A. student here, want to help out? Let me know, I'd love it.

If you're just coming into the RDC B.A. program, be sure to attend Orientation. You'll probably feel a bit awkward at times, to be honest, but you'll be glad you went. Very much so.

If you want to get your textbooks early, go to the bookstore this week or next, before it's RIDICULOUSLY busy. Most of your textbooks are in already. If you don't want to buy a textbook in case you don't need it after all, then hold off until AFTER you've been to class once or twice, to see how much it's really going to be needed, or if you can get a used edition or something. Sometimes you can save cash by holding off.

How's the Student Loan working out? If you have questions about yours, be sure to call now to get them figured out: Alberta Student Loans (Edulinx) at 1-866-852-5629 or Canada Student Loans at 1-888-815-4514.

Don't spend too much time thinking about school otherwise, just yet. It's still summer! Enjoy it for as long as you can.

College students go back to school this weekend, which means its time for me to start working again.

So far this week, I have installed new dimmers on every single switch in the house, designed my wedding photo album, put up a gallery of picture frames in the hallway, hung (hanged? I should probably know this) curtain rods and bought and actually ironed new curtains, and created three bulletin boards for my sister-in-law's classroom. Today, I re-tiled my sister's fireplace, and now I'm thinking about heading to the hardware store to buy new ceiling registers and air return grills.

That may be pushing it, I guess. I guess it's time to get back to work.

Ugh.

Wednesday (night)

I can't believe it's only a few more short days until I go back to school. D. and I spent a good portion of today (since noon, excluding the couple hours we spent seeing Pineapple Express) and Monday cleaning my room. I was going to do it on my own, but as usual, I am really nostalgic and bad at throwing things away. My cleaning stamina is about zero. Which means my room has only accumulated crap since we moved here when I was 11. It's hard to watch some of it go, but overall I know it's for the best. And I am keeping the things that are truly meaningful to me. Getting rid of a ton of stuff will allow me to actually cherish the things I care about, instead of having a lot of nostalgic-inducing things stored in a box somewhere. And a lot of it is truly just crap, not even really worth saving. We threw away a ton of nail polish and perfume that was from my pre-teen years. There is stuff that dates back to the late nineties, so it had to have made the move from my old house. As D. says, the room should show my personality, and right now it doesn't.

But even after we get through the bulk of the room, we still have to tackle the closet. And the decorations, most likely. The trillion horse ribbons on the walls really should go, but I don't know if I can bear to through them away. And all the old school stuff. It's stuff I never look at but like to know that I have. Like sometimes I remember how I threw all of my junior year school stuff away and it's just like, what if there was something in there I actually cared about? Oh well, it's in the past.

I lost my camera a few days ago and I still can't find it. It's really frustrating because we've been through the majority of my room, and it still hasn't turned up. People keep saying it will show up, and it probably will eventually, but I need a camera before I head back to school. Which is Sunday. So I guess if I don't find it before then I'll just buy a new one? Ugh, that thought pains me. Having lost it just makes me feel bad, especially when I feel like I've looked everywhere and have no idea where it could be.

So back to school is becoming a reality. I've spent most of the last three days with D, but I know that soon I'll need to buckle down and focus on my own packing efforts. Tomorrow I'm doing laundry and I'm going to help him pack. Maybe that will give me a better idea of what I need to bring. I'm so excited to not have to be packing for a plane!

I finally heard from my roommate, which is reassuring. It sounds like the room is nice and roomy and everything. My advisor is another story. She hardly ever returns my emails. I know this is a busy time of year and I'm kind of anal about school things and keeping things in order, but I really need to meet with her when I get back on campus. I had to plan my own schedule last semester because I was away, and I want to know that I can graduate in four years with two majors. If she sits me down and tells me now that I can't, I'm going to be majorly pissed. I'm thinking of just changing to another guy in the department. I don't want to hurt my advisor's feelings but if she's not dependable, it's really not fair to me.

Tomorrow D. and I are going on a double date with a couple of our friends. It should be fun. Then on Friday I'm having coffee with my friend M. and we're going over to our friend N's house. Saturday is probably going to be focused on packing. I had no idea summer, especially this week, would fly by so quickly. But I guess that's how it goes, eh?

When I was younger, I loved back-to-school. I loved writing out my younger siblings' supply lists. After we brought everything back, I'd pack up everything into their backpacks (I always got it to work), and I'd make "schedules" for them. I'd get together with each of them, and we'd determine when they'd wake up, when they'd eat breakfast, when they'd get dressed, etc. After creating all the schedules, I'd have them "practice," though after a few years, I knew they wouldn't adhere to the programs. Still, it was fun to do.

I gained weight over the summer, but if everyday is like today, losing it shouldn't be too hard. I didn't eat lunch or go to the bathroom until 4:00 p.m. and I don't even have kids at school yet.

I had no idea how expensive braces were, wow!

Had first staff meeting today...missed first hour because of braces, 2nd hour a little crazy....glad we don't do that everyday. I do better to go in my room, shut the door and teach.

Rushed home to pick up girls, headed back to town for open house for their school, dropped Caleb off at football, stopped by the grocery store to pick up a few things and now I'm typing as the oven preheats.

The girls are upstairs finishing their summer homework that I loathe! I know I should understand,I'm a teacher, and I know it is good for them, and I know they have had plenty of time to do it, but I still loathe summer homework!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still have no class list and I have to do home visits for 18 kids next week. Have an all day workshop Friday and Monday....and have 90,000 things to do in my classroom.

Caleb's birthday party is Saturday. He's having a butt load of people and ask me...do I have anything ready? Plates, napkins, cake, games? NOTHING - I have nothing done! It will all be fine, we have a sort of plan, its just I'm just feeling a little stressed.

My kids start school tomorrow. It doesn't seem like it should be time to be back into the rat race yet! Where did my summer go?

I don't want to fix lunches, I don't want to help them fix lunches, I don't want to get up earlier, I don't want to have to remind them 900 times to do all the things they should know to do but seem to always forget!

I'm fat!

I need clothes that fit! Oh wait, maybe I should lose weight.

Still don't have everything together for the talent show - don't know how I'm gonna get it together!

OK, enough whining...I'm getting on my own nerves, but I had to get it out! I feel better now...thanks for listening!

Monday was the first day of school! I felt funny sending Brennen to school with an empty backpack, but the school district had figured into the budget school supplies for kids in kindergarten through 12th grade. That's a bunch of kids, and a bunch of crayons!

Again, my camera is broke, so here are some not so great pics of Brennen on his first day of school! We woke up early, put on our Lakeside Colors polo, stopped at Starbucks, a trip and hello at the hospital to see my Mother in Law, and then to school.

No wait. I had amnesia. A concussion? Ok let's face it, it's been busy this summer. Then I got overwhelmed with the number of comments that had to be answered. Then I hurt me self, arrggggg (son #1 used to say "I hurt me self" when he was two and then Steve would go "ARGGGG" because he sounded like a pirate.) Oh, let's face it, I've been injured all summer. Not a working limb to be had. Then I got bitten by a search dog that Greenbean and CarnageSIS sent out. And I got arrested for the clown killings. They had to treat the bite wounds while I was in jail and then I got an infection. Never mind. I can't think of any good excuses. Except that my spouse is a closet Democrat and now declaring he's an independent. He's also been very mouthy lately. I keep having to get all Hapkido-y on his ass. The dog has gone totally off his rocker and now thinks he's a baby kangaroo. Son #1 was discharged from occupational therapy in May and had to be re-admitted on Monday. Ya'll? Almost lost my ever-loving mind! Son #2 has grown to roughly the size of a small bear, jumping two sizes this summer. And I had to take 8 weeks off of martial arts due to all the injuries. I know. Weak excuses. Sigh.

My cousin came to visit from Texas last week. On the first morning she was here, Son #1 came racing into my room, shook me awake and whispered "MOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMM!!!!!!!!!!! Mooooooooooooooommmmmmmmmm!!!!!!!!!! Wake UP! Alesia rearranged the living room and she says she taking home (some family) paintings! MOM! HURRY! WAKE UP!!" I rolled over and opened one eye "It's ok, Son." Terrified he says "NO! Mom! She was measuring to see which suitcase the paintings would fit in!!! GET UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" LOL!! I staggered downstairs with my eyes half closed and she's standing in the middle of the living room grinning and I mumbled as I walked by "You're terrifying the kids. Stop threatening to steal shit. Living room looks good. Where's the coffee?"

I have to tell you, I LOVE her 16 year old daughter. Most pleasant, well-behaved teenager you've ever met. Never crabby, never bitchy. And she's like a breath of fresh air. She hasn't lost the ability to be silly and isn't afraid of what other people think. We were coming back from the lake and she took the beach blanket and tied it around her neck like a cape. Then she was running back and forth along the beach making the cape fly out behind her and yelling "I'm SUPERWOMAN!" She's my kinda kid, let me tell ya. I must adopt this child. I even got in a bidding war with my cousin over her. I said "Come live with me. I'll put you through college." Alesia says "She's got a boyfriend back home." I said "We got boys here. I cook! I make everything from scratch." Alesia says "We got McDonalds and a microwave. And she's stricter than I am!" I said "There's an extra car in the driveway. It's yours." Superwoman throws open her arms and looks at me and yells "MOOOMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYYYYY" while Alesia muttered "Bitch" under her breath. Seriously. LOVE this kid. I'm hoping she'll come out here to go to college.

So anyway, the summer has slipped away. Soccer season has already started and the kids are back in school in a couple of weeks. Where did it all go? I had visions of lazy afternoons and local day trips with the kids. Somehow, that slipped away with all the traveling and such. Plus, the weather has not been cooperative here. I've been wearing a coat all week. 62 and rainy! I hope everyone has had a good summer.

Since it's Wednesday and I remembered, let's play a little game of Whatever Wednesday:

Whatever Wednesday rules: Answer the question left by the person before you and leave a question for the next person. Play as many times as you wish. Anything goes. And it doesn’t have to be Wednesday to play.

First Question: What was your favorite thing that you did this summer?

Nature is great for kids

[caption id="attachment_75" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="Nature is great for kids"][/caption]

I am fortunate to have a well behaved 4 year old who is not that demanding as 4 year olds are concerned. We are now 3 weeks away from the start of the new preschool year. It is almost like a countdown. Sounds horrible but I think every mom feels this way. I just came back from a week on vacation with my daughter and her 2 friends and the parents. My husband and I are very good friends with the parents so it was a very easy trip.

Every day - the 3 kids woke up to fresh air and breakfast on the patio. After breakfast we would take them on a nature hike, a swim, and to the beach. They were busy all day and it was just great for their little bodies.

At night it was great for the parents, right after dinner, they were tired and with a few bedtime stories, they were tucked in and sleeping and we got to watch the Olympics for the rest of the night.

I am talking about this not because I want to brag about my amazing parenting skills but to show a contrast of what is going on now that we have returned from our wonderful outdoor vacation adventure.

Back to reality, I am working on my other blog again, doing my Ebay, paying household bills, my husband is back at work, and my daughter has no school and we cannot afford the $325 a week summer camp in our area. A nanny is out of the question as they are $13 and up an hour. So as I work on my morning items, my daughter plays in her room, has a friend over, or is planted in front of the television for 2 hours while I try to quickly finish my daily to do work tasks so I can take her out for the afternoon for the rest of her summer break.

As a mom, you feel pressure to do everything for your child- I want her to be able to have playdates, not watch a lot of television, get a lot of outdoor exercise, ride her bike daily and just never be bored.

I don't know how to do that right now while she is still on school vacation. I don't have help and I need to do some work on the computer and around the house. The laundry needs to be done, the dishes needed to be washed, and the house needs to be tidied. The beds cannot make themselves.

Some of my friends who have daily help or help a few days a week don't understand. They tell me things like "just let the house go. It is no big deal. Your children are most important." I truly agree my child is the most important but when the dishes are piled in the sink, and the dishwasher needs to be emptied...it seems like the house needs attention at the moment.

Would love some comments about what you do and how much help you have. Let me know. I would love to feel like I am not alone.

...you wake up and can't remember how many children should be in the house.

Trying to squeeze the last bit of fun out of summer, our kids have been all over the place with sleep-overs, and we've had our fair share of extras at our house. This morning as I walked out to the kitchen I found myself taking inventory....who should be where? Which is better than the time they were away at the grandparents and I sat straight up in bed and cried, "oh my goodness, where are the kids?"

My son has spent so much time at the neighbor friend's house we've quit retrieving him for meals. He comes home when hungry (I've got to buy that mom some flowers.)

My plan was to have them both in bed by 10 this week and woken up early to prepare for back to school next week. Hasn't happened. We are all going to run in a panic Monday morning. I'm panicking now because I still have those hard-to-find- items on the school supply list. And my son won't try on his new clothes Nana sent!

Well, summer is surely at an end, though the hot weather will go on.
