On the parent of a child. Wasn’t it just yesterday I was feeding you a bottle, and changing

On the parent of a child. Wasn't it just yesterday I was feeding you a bottle, and changing your diapers? Today you lost your first tooth and bought your first backpack in preparation for your first day in Kindergarten. What will tomorrow bring? I shudder to think. But, I'm hiding the car keys just in case ;)

Why can't time stand still. Why must we all get older. In order to get wiser? If it were to get smarter, we would have by now invented a way to make time stand still. But, I guess we can't freeze life, or an image, for ever.

Now I wish I did have a video camera... to capture all of life's miracles. But, I'm thankful I did take a lot of pictures, and continue to take lots of pictures (to everyone's chagrin). I should have started a journal to mark the milestones in your life. Perhaps I kind of, by chronicling your life with posts on the Squirrel Forum for the world to enjoy, and for me to reminisce, and for you to be forever embarrassed by when I will of course have to show them to all of your girlfriends (well, perhaps not to the blond haired girl you're going to meet when you're 15 and a half --- but, that's a story for another day).

Just remember to enjoy every day, and every moment of every day, for life is precious. Nighty nite, and off to bed with sweet dreams because I've received a text message that the Tooth Fairy is on her way.

I have been searching for the past half hour now. Oh God, how did this happen? I don’t even know i

I have been searching for the past half hour now. Oh God, how did this happen? I don’t even know if they have found out yet that I m missing.

It all started when those brambles stuck to my shoe laces. I tried to pull away, but then the thorns scratched my bare knees and calves. I had to bend over for a while to get rid of them. And when I looked up, everyone was gone! I should have asked someone to help me or atleast have had the sense to ask someone to wait for me. Both of which I didn’t do. Wearing khaki shorts and vests isn’t really helpful either. Due to the camouflage they can easily not notice me even if they are searching for me. My only solace is that I still have all of my camping gear with me in my backpack, along with food and water. I really hate to think what would happen to me even without these.

I had signed up for this camping trip into the Mudumalai forest, situated between the borders of Tamilnadu and Karnataka, along with a bunch of eager photographers, ornithologists , etc, and other eager tourists ofcourse. While some are here on their job, I m here purely for the thrill of it. Yesterday, when all of us had arrived , we got to stay at this little cottage among the rangers’ quarters. So, there was no need to feel anxious, whatsoever. I was really looking forward to get going further on our camp trip of two days and two nights. But now, I wish I were back there, in the comfort and warmth of the cottage, lying under those sheets of musty smelling blankets given to us by the caretaker.

As it is, the situation is not that bad yet. I am still safe and sound. Haven’t encountered a single animal yet, except for some squirrels and some strange birds. I can smell rotten leaves and animal poop, which shifts to some fragrance of flowers when the wind blows. There are not supposed to be any tigers around here, but people have seen leopards now and then. Yikes! But thankfully, I am not that deep into the forest yet. We had only walked for about three hours into the jungle before I got lost. What if some carnivorous animal can smell me and decide I am to be his meal today?! Got to get out of here, and quick!

We had started immediately after our breakfast, so I am not hungry yet. Its only one o'clock. Even if I were hungry, I am too scared to sit down and open my backpack, here in the middle of the jungle all alone. People told me I must be really brave to go on such a trip, but honestly, not feeling that brave now. All I am thinking is, oh God, even if I were to die here today...please don’t give me a painful death......

Wait a minute , I have a compass, don’t I? May be I can use it get back to where we started. Someone or the other is sure to be there out there. Although I do have map, a map of the region is of no use, I hardly know to read a map. So...I believe we were walking towards East from West, because the sun was in my face when we started. I will try and retrace my steps now.

“Grrnt....Grrnt....Grrrrrrnt”

I just froze in my tracks. What the hell was that?! Oh, please let it not be a leopard or a bison or an elephant or anything that can be potentially dangerous.....

Ooh, I see it now. Its a boar, a wild boar. Can’t be that bad. Its just a pig thats in a jungle. Well for safety, I will just get out my pocket knife.

(Fiction)

Turntable Discussion: Skillz- The Million Dollar Backpack
by: AbdulWaahid

After dropping the near classic album, From Where?? In 1996, the emcee then known as Mad Skillz has reemerged with a new album. He has since dropped the Mad from his moniker and only goes by Skillz now. Fans of the emcee that came in the game literally where wondering "Where He Went" as he would only drop yearly rap-ups and guest appearances for the past twelve years. Finally in 2008 he has released The Million Dollar Backpack and immediately answered the question on everybody’s mind with the incredible "Where I Bee"” and makes listeners remember why they fell in love with Skillz in the first place. Skillz sounds the most comfortable on the battle-ready tracks that he is known for instance tracks like "Sick" and "Don’t Act Like You Don’t Know" where he and Freeway trade bars over a an Orthodox track with a well-crafted beat and vocal sample. The aforementioned song "Sick" is the Dominique Wilkins of tracks a highlight reel of lyrics. Where he quotes “I was sick before Jeezy knew what and adlib was”, "I’m only sick on two occasions that’s day and night", and "I was sick before you realized to hit repeat on your CD player" you get the idea. However the album isn’t without flaws, Skillz struggled unsuccessfully to create a radio-friendly lead single with the mediocre "(For Real) He Don’t Own Me' and the underwhelming "My Phone." Skillz unlike many other known battle emcees is able to create a solid album and not have to continually beat the listener over the head with punchlines which he proves with some socially conscious sounds such as "Crazy World" which featured the insanely talented Maimouna Youssef singing the hook and "I’m Gon’ Make It" where he starts "I’m raise the heights up, spit something tonight that’s go light somebody’s life up…..Life aint playing and I know it’s a God but I don’t feel like I’m praying." Overall Skillz proves that he can make a solid album and he is more than the guy who makes the rap ups hopefully we don’t have to wait another twelve years for another.

I don't believe that I have actually discussed my travel plans on here yet, but there isn't really point so I am now actually doing it and I might as well just post about what I am doing instead of what I intend to do.

I spent all of Monday (four days before this post) prepping and packing for my traveling. My intention was to have one carry-on bag for the 6 week trip, which I managed to do without problem:

Packing List:

1 pair jeans (wear other pair)

10 underwear/socks

10 shirts

laptop (my new Eee PC!) + power cord + headset (for Skype)

digital camera (Canon PowerShot SD1000 (I got it $150 cheaper 8 months ago at Target)) + charger

deodorant + toothbrush/paste + Q-tips + face wash + lotion + sunscreen + shampoo

Spanish dictionary and book of verbs

alarm clock

packable backpack

I had also gotten one of those hang-inside-your-pants deals for carrying things out of the reach of pickpockets. This houses my driver's license, passport, luggage keys, etc.

And I got it all into the new travel bag I got while in Iowa. It weighed in at just over 18 pounds.

Raf Simons bags from the spring 2009 collection.

Raf Simons has climbed high up on the fashion ladder, drawing critical acclaim and a cult following for his signature men's line and for his work at Jil Sander. But that doesn't mean that he's above a little low-end action. Simons began working with Eastpak three seasons ago, presenting oversize backpacks during his spring 2008 show. (They turned out to be some of the strongest accessories of the men's collections.) During the recent Eastpak show at Berlin Fashion Week, the company unveiled Simons's vision for spring 2009: silver leather-accented mesh, denim and canvas totes, messenger bags and carryalls that reflect his love for exaggerated proportions and linear silhouettes. Despite the profusion of high-end designers doing capsule collections for mass-market brands, Simons stands out for his commitment to progressive design principles. The new Eastpak line ranges from about 208 to 506 dollars, and will be available at stores like Barneys New York, Dover Street Market in London and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong.

I got a wild hair and decided to make PJ a backpack for school. I found apttern in a magazine (I THINK Quilts N Moore - summer issue). The backpack turned out really cute, but I am not thrilled with the construction methods. If I were to redo it, I will definately assemble it differently.

I liked the backpack so much and i had extra fabric, so I made PJ a pencil bag, too.

Here is the backpack after I cut out the fabric. Note the magazine article.
