Kevin Scott (brother of my good friend Jake, who is the Youth Pastor at Grace Community Church in Chelmsford, MA) has written book called The Pornification of a Generation that is featured in an article in Newsweek. Here is the first paragraph to the article...

The idea for a book about porn culture came to Kevin Scott the day his daughter decided she absolutely had to have a Bratz-doll pony. For months, the 5-year-old had begged him for a Bratz doll—clad in spike heels, fishnets and miniskirt, enormous puppy-dog eyes protruding from her oversized head. Her sexy look seemed a little too sexy for a preschooler, so he and his wife bought her a different doll, which she was happy with. Except that a few months later, Bratz came out with Bratz Babyz. "If Bratz had looked like Barbie hookers, these looked like baby hookers," Scott says. Again, he convinced his daughter that My Little Pony was just as cool—and for a moment, the conversation ended. Until, of course, the Bratz came out with Bratz Ponyz. And then, says Scott, an English professor at a small college in Georgia, "I realized porn culture and I were in a death match for my daughter's soul."

I don't know what it is but everytime I think of Paris Hilton I think of the word Toxic. It may also be because of Britney Spear's song by the same title or it maybe the fact that often times I am just sickened by Paris' public persona. In away I see Paris as one of the pioneer women who helped society to cross over from praising virginity to worshiping promiscuity. Before she came we had confessions from pop idols about their commitment to their supposed virginities and she kinda obliterated that scene by coming out with her infamous sex tape. It seems that today young girls especially are encouraged to become famous no matter the cost. No one wants to be barbie anymore when they can be Bratz!

No.

I was looking for someone to high-five when I read the New York Times report that children's publisher Scholastic Inc. has axed the sexed-up Bratz book rip-off series from their book clubs and fairs.

Well, nobody else is home so I'm high-fiving via blog. This rare "No" to the book merchandising of junky TV shows and products is a major step (although I don't really understand why Scholastic allowed the trashy Bratz to move in in the first place, vamping about in titles such as "Catwalk Cuties").

Boston-based Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood claims credit for cutting the Bratz chapter books from the fliers that go home in students' bookbags, as well as other spinoff products, via an aggressive e-mail campaign. Their beef is as much with the gimmick factor as the inappropriateness of the Bratz dolls, as is mine.

Unfortunately, Scholastic reports their decision to yank the series was based as much on dwindling sales as parent protests.

I've always felt Scholastic selections erred severely on the junky side, while sprinkling in some high-quality choices here and there, like the Harry Potter series. One stroll through a school Scholastic book fair and you tend to see as many, if not more, toys, cheapo plastic items and "imitation book products" on display as bona fide good books.

In her article, Times writer Motoko Rich quotes teachers who actually argue that book tie-ins to trendy shows like "Hannah Montana" and movies might be "the only books some children would read."

Why? Why would spin-off drivel be the only thing a child would read? I'll gladly field arguments to the contrary, but my feeling is that somebody just isn't trying hard enough -- if at all -- to find such kids something good to read.

I've had innumerable battles with The Divine Miss T over letting videos and books featuring the hooched-out Bratz dolls into the house, so I'm happy to see that Scholastic Books is dropping Bratz products from its catalogs and fairs. There's too much good stuff out there for Scholastic to be wasting space on training manuals for the Little Lolita League, and any Humbert Humberts who are disappointed by the news can console themselves with Internet porn.

I realize that this is a complicated situation for a company like Scholastic. The field of children's books has been fully colonized by toy companies, and I'm not sure at what point one can argue with any consistency that a series or its characters are beyond the pale. I thought I could draw the line by supporting only things that originated as books or movies and otherwise wouldn't exist, which allowed Harry Potter and Star Wars through the gate. But when I saw Dances With Mermaid's instant rapture at her first sight of a Barbie doll, I capitulated without firing a single shot. There really is no rule of thumb. Even products that started out as crassly obvious marketing campaigns disguised as children's stories, such as the Smurfs or Transformers, now have lots of people who remember them with affection and nostalgia. The Divine Miss T has a Blue's Clues pillow and a Powerpuff Girls backpack and no doubt they will be her totems of childhood forevermore.

At least the Bratz crew were so out-and-out creepy that parents could line up against them. There are plenty of other battles ahead, and I know the issues won't be nearly as clear-cut.

Okaaaaay I'll try to sum it up as fast as possible:

weds: I opened a savings account., along with a chequing account. I HAVE DEBIT NOW!! I feel so adult! Downside: it takes 7 business days for my money to transfer through.. BS!!

Friday: work. I like work! I love the manager.. he has a sense of humor. But his face is almost 100% serious so I can't tell. He tricked me many times. I got my pay check from that one day I worked. $40 LOL. I found my pay rate- huit.quatre-vingt-neuf $$! I was training today, but next week I'm not so I get tips. YAYYYYYYY!

Sat: french classes. I asked Mme. M about moving up a level because.. in all honesty the class is an insult to my french level. I'm not saying im pro or anything... but the kids in my class know nothing. How much will I learn in a class full of people WAY below me? I'd rather be in a more challenging class and NOT be the one that knows the most (-.-) than be one of the top in my class and learn absolutely-fucking-nothing! I guess M seemed offended by my request. She looked teary and everything-FFS! I don't want to waste 300 on a class and learn nothing! NO! Because I asked M that, a couple of others(ha), including E asked too. One dude.. grade 8 this year or something, asked the SAME THING AS ME. Uhm... no you don't ask to skip a level to FINISH the program. You're here to learn as much as you can. You go at your own damn pace. Asshole. E & I asked about moving up and the receptionist said that we should take a placement test (now free because we're registered. BAHAHA!). I guess I'll take it next Mon. Pro-D after all.

after french, my sister and I ate at oakridge.. and got a free poster at aritzia! cool.

cousins picked us up and then we stayed at their house until the next day. watched: maid of honor, some bratz movie, a little bit of my little pony, last half of 88 minutes. PATRICK DEMPSEY <3. haha first when Dominic saw me.. I made a face and he cried. After he kept climbing on top of my sis and me ~ gosh those kids tire me out so fast.

I solved the most of a rubiks cube I have ever solved (omg bad grammar here..)! one face, the T shape of each side touching the yellow side.. it was awesome. I need to buy one... and SOLVE IT!!

slept over there. My parents were in van and my dad got drunk from wine... so they came home late.

Scolastic has pulled all the Bratz books from it's distribution line. Parents, teachers and psychologists have long been complaining that the Bratz are a highly sexualized brand, and since February 2007 Scolastic has received over 5,000 emails as part of an anti-bratz compaign. Is this behavour overly cautious? Surely there's nothing suggestive about a character aimed at the 5 - 8s who looks like this....

Isn't she a Pussy Cat Doll? But seriously, I'm most upset about the kids. They are the victims here, missing out on such literary classics as Lil' Bratz Dancin' Divas and Lil' Bratz Catwalk. Without the Bratz Fashion Designer stencil kit how will they ever learn to make the perfect purse?!

Madness. One New Yorker article actually decribed the Bratz Dolls as carrying "the sly, dozy expression of a party girl after one too many mojitos". Pah! Unfair surely....

You Did It: Scholastic Expels the Bratz From Schools
By CCFC

Thanks to you, Scholastic, Inc. will no longer be promoting the highly sexualized Bratz brand in schools.

In April, 2007, we launched a letter-writing campaign urging Scholastic to stop promoting Bratz items at their book clubs and book fairs. You flooded Scholastic with emails urging them to stop selling books such as Lil' Bratz Dancin Divas; Lil' Bratz Catwalk Cuties; and Lil' Bratz Beauty Sleepover Bash.

We were disappointed in Scholastic's initial response. They claimed the Bratz books were important to reach "reluctant readers." This claim seemed disingenuous, especially when the 2007-2008 Scholastic Bratz items included the Bratz: Rock Angels computer game and the Bratz Fashion Designer stencil set so elementary school students could design "the perfect purse."

But we kept the pressure on. And in the end, more than 5,000 emails from CCFC members were too much to ignore. Scholastic has confirmed that they will no longer be selling Bratz Items in schools. We applaud Scholastic for this decision.

*** Every Thursday we look at Sh*t of the Week, a look at just one of this weeks recent video game releases that deserves to die a slow horrible death. Are we biased and opinionated? YUP! But most importantly, we don't care. . . ***

Whats more worse than horrible little slutty, trampy deformed looking tweenies that actual REAL little girls look up to everyday? Horrible, slutty, trampy deformed Ponyez that these freaky ass Bratz girls enjoy.

The Bratz line, is a line of dolls that personifies teenage obsession with looks and popularity. But to make matters worse they personify the worse aspects of being a real tween, 'You're only cool if you look good, wear lots of make up, dress in fancy clothes, oh and be the most popular girl around.'

For some unknown reason they thought, "Hey, girls like this crap, I bet they would like if if they had Ponyz too!" I don't care what you might say about this game its a huge pile of crap. Have I played it? HELL NO! I don't need to, I don't care if I can clean, ride, or customize my Pony, its a piece of shit. Here's what the back of the box says;

"The game sees you arrive on the Ponyz archipelago to participate in the prestigious Ponyz Town beauty pageant, 'Passion for Fashion'. The competition takes place over a year and gives you the chance to develop your artistic talent through a series of challenges based around fashion and beauty. In addition, between each challenge you are completely free to explore the gorgeous tropical islands, meet and befriend the inhabitants, and participate in a variety of activities."

I'm speechless. . . Its a sad day when this game is being made, its an even sadder day that its a squeal...(that means the first did well enough to make a second *sigh*)

First she smiles and then says her first word, then she crawls- or just suddenly stands up and walks, as mine did. Then she sings and talks. All of a sudden it's the first day at school and your heart breaks as you leave her at the door. You're on edge all day- will she be ok? Will she find the toilet-on time? Will she eat her lunch, make friends, listen to the teacher, miss you?

Then she discovers Bratz and Hannah Montana. She doesn't like the clothes you buy and folds her arms when she speaks to you- and she's still only six.......you can only imagine what the years ahead will bring. Just as little girls in the west start trying on Mum's high heels, she starts playing with your hijab- somehow you don't want to tell her that a hijab, nail polish , lipstick and Daisy Duke shorts don't really go....

Then today when her eyes light up as she gets to go to the mosque for the first time- she saw it as a bastion of male domination ( well maybe not in those words- just a place where Daddy and brother go ). Today my daughter went to the Ramadan Prayer , to the mosque for the first time. Another step in 'growing up'.
