Primogenito di Conrad e Jane Adams (ha un fratello di un anno più giovane di nome Bruce), sin dall'infanzia comincia a viaggiare in giro per il mondo. Il padre è un diplomatico e, a causa del suo lavoro, la famiglia è spesso costretta a trasferirsi da un posto all'altro: Austria, Portogallo, Israele e molti altri luoghi.
L'amore per la musica comincia molto presto: a 10 anni compra la sua prima chitarra insieme ad uno zio. Nel 1974 Bryan si trasferisce nella città di Vancouver insieme alla madre al padre ed al fratello. All'età di 14 anni Bryan partecipa alla sua prima audizione per entrare nella band di un compagno di scuola, David Taylor (che, ironia della sorte, molti anni dopo entrerà a far parte della band di Bryan come bassista). Purtroppo non passa l'audizione, ma non si arrende. In questo periodo registra la sue prime esibizioni su cassetta, inclusa una versione di "Jumping Jack Flash" dei Rolling Stones. Un anno dopo abbandona la scuola, comincia a studiare pianoforte e forma la sua prima band, gli Shock.
L'anno seguente incontra Jim Vallance, ex bassista della band Prism, e con lui comincia a collaborare scrivendo moltissime canzoni. I due registrano alcune demo come duo, Bryan alla voce e alla chitarra e Vallance alla tastiera e alla batteria, ma vengono snobbati dalle case discografiche. It strikes me, a week after arriving back home in Vancouver, that I haven't wrapped up my story of my trip back to my hometown. The 10-day non-vacation (at least half the time was spent working or with relations) was a chance to reacquaint myself with the family and friends and, as is my wont, to consider all the ways my life has gone wrong since I left the warmth of the family hearth, if not the womb.

All in all, I'd say the trip was a success. True, I didn't manage to talk my way out of staying at my parents' (the food is questionable, the service worse, and I have no fondness for my old room, a small dank basement unit with wood-panelling where I spent my troubled teenage years and which is now full of my nephew's sports equipment). And true, the mosquitoes were bad (as always this time of year--but not as bad as Hellboy II. And the weather was not great, especially the last few days, when I actually had to wear long pants and a hoodie.  

But I did reconnect with my friend Dennis and his lovely wife Sandra. In fact, my one venture out into Winnipeg nightlife--not counting hipster karaoke on the Wednesday night--was with Dennis, Sandra, and Sandra's cousin Steiny (short for Thorstein--he's Icelandic). Steiny was down from the Pas, a northern Manitoba (meaning: colder than an icebox in winter) settlement of about 6,000. I'm not sure what, exactly, he made of Alive, the nightclub we went to last Friday. Sandra had asked around to find out where to go, and when to get there to avoid a lineup. We avoided a lineup, all right. We also avoided any other patrons, at least until half an hour later. That's when the Badabing party bus rolled up outside the club. A red carpet was unfurled, and a couple of dozen 20somethings in various states of inebriation tumbled out. We moved from a window seat to a table overlooking the dancefloor, which was suddenly semi-populated. Then the Miller Genuine Draft girls appeared, and set up a tub full of beer. As the evening wore on, the zippers on their jumpers got lower. Around 11 the evening's entertainment, a cover band called the Boom, hit the stage. Let's just say, it takes some nerve on the part of management to post a dress code that specifies "no white shoes", and then employs a band that covers Bryan Adams songs.

One disappointment of the trip was that my high school drinking partner, Malloy, never called back about a visit. This is too bad because he's always good for a story. A great big bloke, black hair, uni-brow, the youngest of a big Irish family, he has the sickest imagination and sense of humour of anyone I know. If you've seen the movie Superbad, specifically the end credits--which play over drawing after drawing of cocks, an obsession of one of the main (male) characters--you'll have some idea of the kind of drawings that found their way onto Malloy's notebook paper in high school. Strangely enough, for such a twisted individual, he has gone on to marry and breed--two daughters at last count. The last time I was there was typical of a visit to his suburban house; he ushered me downstairs, poured me a rye-and-Coke, and gave me a tour of his domain, i.e. the basement he has made into a shrine to his fave pop culture icons. Then, amidst the models (a Monkees car, a Starship Enterprise), Beatles paraphernalia, and a '70s pinball machine, he treated me to a classic Malloy performance. He popped in a videocassette of footage of him playing guitar on a picket line from when he and his fellow casino workers were on strike, and pressed "play" on a cassette mix of classic rock tunes and his own 4-track originals. He handed me a scrapbook, which featured all his appearances in the local print media, from high school basketball photos to news stories about his picket line serenading . Then, while his voice warbled out of the speakers and he appeared on TV and I flipped through the clips of long-ago exploits, he talked about himself. Quadrophonic Malloy.

BUT, on the plus side of the trip, I finally wore down my niece Delaney. The five-year-old used to hide behind her mom, my sister Corall, whenever she saw me. But on this trip, I let her no in no uncertain terms that I was coming over to her house for lunch, and that she'd better have a tuna sandwich ready for me--just the way I like it, with little pieces of dill pickle mixed with the tuna. My heavyhanded approach worked--when the fateful lunch date arrived, she actually did help her mom make some sandwiches.

There were other highlights--dinner at Dennis and Sandra's, my uncle's gift of a bottle of Crown Royal, taking my nephew to a rock show, E. parking four blocks away from a (free) concert so he wouldn't have to pay for parking. But, I'm glad to be back in Vancouver. At least you can get a decent mojito in this town.

I had a blast of a day today with my friends and new faces.
Ah! I am going to look back at this summer and probably write my own version of Brian Adams' Summer of 69.

The band join previous winners The Who, Paul Weller, Ray Davies, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Pink Floyd, The Rolling Stones and Morrissey.

I guess they are still relevant after all. At least, in England. The Manchester lads will get the lifetime achievement award at the Silver Clef Award ceremony in London. U2 and Paul Weller have won the award before.

This would be a perfect opportunity for Jay Z to criticize such an award going to Oasis. But this is England. And the Brits love handing out awards to their own, don't they? And look, even Bryan Adams and Meat Loaf won awards at this thing:

Love opens the heart, blinds the eyes, and clouds the mind. Love can make even the smartest person in the planet loose his/her wits.

Let's cut to the chase.... When in love, we become crazy, in Tom's case, he was sooo crazy about Katie that he was compelled to show it by jumping up and down on Oprah's couch, which astonished millions of viewers. It was quite a sight that prompted some of the people in the media to mock him and dub him as "unstable" and just downright demented.

This incident gave birth to the phrase "jumping the couch. It's a phrase used to describe someone who makes a total fool out of him/herself in public to the point that it ruins their reputation.

In Tom's defense, the dude was in love. I don't know if it flattered Katie or anything seeing Tom overtly express his feelings for her, but I'm sure a great deal of ladies out there would kill for something like that- though in a more subdued way I suppose.

The point is, before I digressed on and on about Tom Cruise- Love makes us do crazy things, either in a good or bad way.

The thing is, when we allow ourselves to fall in love with someone, actually, our consent is not necessary, we just fall in love period. When that happens, we open up ourselves to the other person. We bear hearts, we become vulnerable- this is the risk we take when we allow ourselves to love. You see, the only way a person can hurt us is when we allow ourselves to care, and yes, to love them. Our hearts break because we give people the right to break them.

The risk is great, but being able to posses love makes it worth it- right?

Love makes us smart in a stupid way. People give so much of themselves to the one's they love to the point that they lose track of who they are and eventually this leads to dissatisfaction and disenchantment. People give so much of their time, effort and sacrifice to the one's they love that resentment builds up when their significant others fail to offer the same. Some people pour all their heart and soul onto the person that they love, and become crushed when they realize that it will never be reciprocated.

It is said that in typical relationship, there will always be someone who loves the other more- I see this as a power struggle actually, in a sense that: If one of the two loves the other more... He/ she will forever be the less fortunate of the two. Forever, powerless, crippled by his/her devotion to the other half.

Which begs the question: is there ever an equal division of affection / love in a relationship?
Answer: Yes, not a lot of people are capable of pulling it off, but it's possible.

It's about balance, it's basic give and take, not take and take, then give when it pleases you. When you allow yourself to keep giving without taking even a little bit of something from the other, for yourself- you're being smart in a stupid way.

People who wait for the other to say the words "I love you" are being smart in a stupid way, why?

It saves them from the sting of rejection, yet deprives them from the blissful vindication of their feeling being reciprocated.

People who stay in a dead-end relationship (i.e. physically and emotionally abusive relationships) are being smart in a stupid way.

Their already trampled on self-esteem will not permit them to leave, and they have formed some perverse attachment to their significant other believing that "they didn't mean it, and at the end of the day they did the act out of love".

People who allow the one they love to walk away or slip away, are being smart in a stupid way.

They free themselves from the risks that come with love, but live with the regret of letting go of the one they love.

People who cheat on their boyfriend/ girlfriend husbands/wives are being smart in a stupid way.

They find pleasure and excitement in the company of another, while betraying and forsaking those who truly love them.

People who allow the chance of love pass by, are smart in a stupid way,

They will never know the joys or sorrows that come with love, but they will always think about "what might and could've been"

People who give up love to avoid the pain, are being smart in a stupid way.

They live their lives free from pain, but deprive themselves the chance of finding true happiness.

The truth is, when it comes to love, we are all smart in a stupid way. There's no class that teaches us how to love, nobody can teach a person how to love, we just do.

Only an idiot would deprive him/herself from feeling love. And besides, love doesn't necessarily have to come from a romantic partner, it can come from your parents, friends, and etc.
