Here is a very clean little Yamaha XT 500 cafe racer. Seems like HONAHA has been posting more Yamaha pics than usual, thats because we keep finding more and more sweet Yamaha bikes out there. So, look this little beast over carefully and notice the front and rear drilled disc brakes, the blanked out battery and air boxes, the clean exhaust, and the flow of the tank and seat. The overall look of this bike is stunning, so enjoy it.

I figured it was about time to feature a little American V-twin power on HONAHA. I tend to highlight a lot of Japanese bikes on this site, but lets face it... there are some very nice Harley based cafe racers out there. It is nearly impossible to beat the sound of a Harley v-twin, and with parts becoming more and more available, look for sportsters to become increasingly popular on the cafe racer scene. Keep it tuned for more Harley motorcycles, and parts.

Had a little more time to work on the HONAHA cafe racer, and added a nice 4 into 1 exhaust, jetted up the carbs a size, and cleaned it more. I found the exhaust on craigslist for 20 bucks. It had a fair amount of surface rust, and a little bit of road rash. To solve these problems, and still fit it in my budget, I used some fairly abrasive metal polish on a scotch brite pad to brush off all the rust, and grime. The header looks like really nice now, like a brushed aluminum rather then chrome. I then added a 5 dollar exhaust tip from Schucks, and am running it straight. This straight pipe sounds mean, just enough for everyone to hear, but not enough to annoy innocent bystanders. Here are some new pics, I think it improved the overall look of the bike. Tell me what you think. For more info and pictures, check out the MY CB550 page.

Just thought I would keep it simple clean for today's entry. Pod filters are a great addition to any cafe racer. They add a little power, and clean up that stock air box. Don't get me wrong, I like the look of pods, but be warned, they are more work to install than you may think. Removal of the stock air box, relocation of breather hoses, possible frame clearance problems, re-jetting of the carbs, difficulty tuning, shorter engine life, and louder intake noise are just some of the downsides that come along with changing to pod filters. I like them, I just want to encourage readers to think before they impulsively buy pods. If you have done your research and want to go through with it, I suggest Emgo, uni-filter, or K&N filters. I have found many sets for around $50.00 on eBay Motors. Don't be like HONAHA, think before you tear things apart. Like my Dad always tells me "the engineers that designed the stock air box are smarter than you." Remember that.

Buell is labeling their newest creation a "21st Century Cafe Racer". Now, it is up to you to decide if this is really a cafe bike, but in my eyes it's mean either way. HONAHA has always been a big fan of what Buell does. I love the idea of the loud v-twin in a sport package. This baby produces 146 HP @ 9800 rpm which is enough to get me in some serious trouble. If I were in the market for a nice new bike, Buell would be on the top of my list. See all the specs, prices, and photos here.

OXFORD, UK (July 22, 2008) – Buell brings a new weapon to the streets for 2009 with the introduction of the 1125CR™, a striking new model featuring a 21st century take on the “Café Racer” genre and the brute power and torque of the Buell Helicon™ 1125 liquid-cooled V-Twin engine. The 1125CR is one of seven 2009 Buell Sportbike, Street and Adventure Sportbike models.

“The 1125CR is my vision of a contemporary café racer,” said Erik Buell, Chairman and Chief Technical Officer at Buell Motorcycle Company. “It’s got Clubman-style bars, and a flyscreen instead of a fairing. Then we geared it down to give the Helicon engine even more grunt. If torque rules the street, the 1125CR will be the new boss.”
Buell Highlights for 2009 (see separate releases for more detail on each topic)

A Café Racer for the 21st century, the new 1125CR nods respectfully to the past with clubman bars, flyscreen and a tail cowl, while a 146-hp, liquid-cooled Buell Helicon 1125cc V-Twin engine and Buell Intuitive Response Chassis (IRC) deliver spirited, sophisticated sport performance. A longer swingarm and lower final-drive gearing help maximise acceleration. Its sinister styling will make this bike unmistakable on the street.

New on Buell XB Streetbikes

Buell Lightning® Streetbikes, powered by an air-cooled Thunderstorm™ V-Twin engine, get a menacing new look, thanks to a blacked-out frame, forks, engine and other components. Two Lightning models powered by the Thunderstorm 1203 engine upgrade to the Buell ZTL2 front brake with an eight-piston caliper, a design that debuted on the 1125R® in 2008.

The superbly equipped sport-touring Buell® Ulysses® XB12XT, introduced mid-year 2008, joins the versatile, all-road Ulysses® XB12X in the 2009 Buell Adventure Sport category.
The Prevost - Fitzsimmons Block

73-85 King Street W. cor. St. Andrew St., Brockville, ON

Henry Field and his brother Richard were hardware merchants in the “Round Corner Store” during the time this large building was known as the “Fitzsimmons Block.

This is one of my favourite commercial buildings on King Street. For almost 160 years the three stores that make up the length of this stone block have catered to the needs of Brockvillians. Today’s stores which some of you will know in the “Round Corner Building” are Leeds County Books, Biba, and Echo Clothing Co.

The building was erected by George Prevost, the son of Andre and Anna (Buell) Prevost in 1842. This was the corner lot owned by his parents who received it from his grandfather, William Buell in 1805. He borrowed the money to build, eventually receiving 1200 pounds in mortgage money against his new development.

Architecturally it was a very pleasing classical design in stone running one hundred feet from the corner at St. Andrew St. There were actually other round corner buildings put up on the main street, but only two exist now and this is the oldest. A visit to the site will reveal a lot of changes evident on the face of the three storefronts and second floor entrances. However, at #79 you may see one of the original entrances framed in bold pieces of cut and dressed stone. Likewise the original roof line in a hip design remains above the corner stores at #73 and 75.

The first tenants were Matthie, Easton & Co. The next year however this mercantile business was replaced by the store of Morton, McKee & Co. organized by George Morton and Andrew McKee. George Prevost’s untimely death in 1844 passed the indebted property to his sister, Julia and her husband David Mair who held the mortgage.

Morton, McKee & Co. was a large wholesale and retail business selling all manner of tools and hardware under the sign of the “Gilt Plough.” They were in operation into the 1850s.

In 1847 the western section of the buildings was purchased by Robert Fitzsimmons who moved his store to this location. Fitzsimmons, and then his sons Robert, William,Thomas and Hugh, stocked a large variety of groceries and liquors. They continued in business here for many years, eventually purchasing the rest of the building in 1865 from Andrew S. Mair the son and heir of David Mair. The property then was commonly known as the “Fitzsimmons Block.”

An architect’s rendering shows how the original main street facade of the Round Corner Building may have looked in the 1850s.

Over the years the corner store was leased by Smith & Shepherd (1861-64), John & Robert Blyth (1865-67)dry goods merchants, Richard & Henry Field’s hardware store (1871-1890).

A long time employee of the Field business, Alexander G. Dobbie purchased the business in 1890 establishing his own hardware business here. He purchased the “Round Corner Store” from Charles H. Fitzsimmons in 1907 This became the location of A. G. Dobbie’s Hardware Store for over forty years.

The Fitzsimmons Brothers grocery store had an even longer history, eventually being succeeded by William Lorimer’s grocery store about 1903-1912. Subsequently the Fitzsimmons store was occupied by tailoring establishments run by Samuel A. Jackson and John W. Ker.

A. G. Dobbie & Co. occupied the corner location from 1890 until about 1929.

Sources: Information for this story came from many sources. Property records filed in the Leeds County Registry Office were invaluable, along with contemporary newspaper ads placed by each merchant. An adapted re-use project by Restoration Technology student, Marty Lillepold (1981) on this building was useful. The 1879 engraving was published by the Canadian Illustrated News. The old photo, although a bit fuzzy, is rare, and was earlier published in an advertising supplement of the time. A University of Toronto student architect measured this building in 1963 as a summer assignment, and is the source of the front elevation used here.

According to T

Looks like the rebellion goes all the way to the top...and it has deep pockets.

According to The New York Times:

While it appears that many Clinton backers are poised to begin immediately raising money for Mr. Obama, the presumed Democratic nominee, several categorically ruled that out in interviews. Others said they drew the line at collecting cash for the Democratic National Committee, whose chairman, Howard Dean, angered many Clinton donors over how he handled the dispute over whether to seat convention delegates from Florida and Michigan.

“The Obama campaign has a lot to show me before I will consider being there for them,” said Susie Tompkins Buell, co-founder of the clothing company Esprit and a longtime friend of Mrs. Clinton.

Ms. Buell said she wanted to see how Mrs. Clinton was treated over the next few weeks, a sentiment that she said was shared by many of the women, especially, in her donor network.

“Hillary has asked us to do all we can for Barack,” she said. “I listen to that and respect that, but personally I need to evaluate.”

Ms. Buell is certainly Obama-skeptical. More than that, she is willing to think for herself on the issue. As Hillary supporters, yes, we appreciate what Hillary has said and the gracious and amazing way in which she said it, but we reserve the right to make our own decisions about who we shall support, when we shall do it, and under what conditions. While Ms. Buell is waiting for certain conditions to be met, others have made up their minds:

Lynn Forester de Rothschild, a top Clinton fund-raiser, telecommunications entrepreneur and member of the Democratic national convention’s platform committee, said she had questions about Mr. Obama’s trustworthiness. If he does not answer them, Ms. de Rothschild said she would at least consider voting for Mr. McCain or even working for him.

“I love my country more than I love my party,” said Ms. de Rothschild, who said she had been receiving entreaties from both Mr. Obama’s and Mr. McCain’s backers. “I can’t just fall in line.” [emphasis mine]

Yep, Ms. de Rothschild sounds like a PUMA. Others apparently want to meet Obama face to face and have a little bit of a talk with him.

Many Clinton fund-raisers, however, say they want to wait until a meeting is scheduled between the two candidates and Mrs. Clinton’s “Hillraisers,” those who have raised $100,000 or more for her. For some, it is a matter of ensuring that Mrs. Clinton gets the proper credit, while others are waiting for the chance to question Mr. Obama.

Lanny Davis, a former special counsel to President Bill Clinton and a Hillraiser, made clear that he was willing to do whatever he could to raise money for Mr. Obama, but he said he wanted the opportunity to ask Mr. Obama about what Mr. Davis described as “personal characterizations he made about Senator Clinton.”

“It’s something called closure,” Mr. Davis said. [emphasis mine]

I'd also like to ask Senator Obama about the many "personal characterizations" (putting it mildly) he levied against Senator Clinton. It's something called respect.

But here's the ultimate kicker: Dean has doomed the party with his failure to lead and blatant efforts to fix the nomination.

But several Clinton fund-raisers said they harbored too much ire for Mr. Dean to raise money for the party, even if they said they were willing to support Mr. Obama.

“Howard Dean and the D.N.C. will not get one penny from me or any of my friends,” Mr. Davis said.

Looks like some Clinton donors are joining together to Just Say No Deal!

Not only do these add a nice little modern touch to your cafe racer, they may just save your life. These are really classy looking bar end mirrors that are high quality, and very functional. I suggest that everyone have at least one mirror on your bike so you can peep the guy thats crowding you. These look great and are smart to have. Get one and you'll see.
