Another night shot

A sunset from Wednesday evening. I had the gradual grey filter on and the camera was standing on a stone wall because I didn't have the tripod with me. Anyway, I didn't get the settings quite right so I had to post process this photo pretty much. The tree tops were a pain and I'm still not sure if they are good enough for a big print. But overall I'm pretty happy with the photo :)

Well, my home doesn't actually fit into this photo, it's way to the left from the river view - but this has been my home town since 1987.

The light yesterday was really awesome - and since a nice stranger showed up lent me a tripod I managed to capture this shot which I'm actually pretty proud of.

New Canon Eos 40D images

Back in August I started getting back into my photography hobby with a nice point and shoot camera, the Olympus SP-560UZ. Having totally enjoyed the experience I recently dove a little deeper into my hobby with the purchase of a new Canon Eos 40D.

It's been awhile since I posted any thumbs, so I figured I'd sneak a few of my favorite recent shots in tonight. Hope you like them. (Click thumbnails to enlarge.)

Snowballs and lensbabies

Remember my Lensbaby 3G? There was a small problem with it (one of the magnetic aperture holders was getting peeled off) so I had to take it in for guarantee repair. Well, yesterday I got it replaced by a brand new one, so once I find the time and the energy and the inspiration I can go back to learning how to use it. Until then here's one of my first shots with it, a while back. Not a very good one, but it's a start!

It's Moriz's 1st birthday, so I built a "home studio" and tried some portrait shooting. The lights didn't come up perfect, but I'm pretty pleased with the result anyway. This is a B&W conversion - in my doggy blog there's a coloured version of this.

It's taken with my Tamron wide lens, with the help of the camera's built-in flash and nothing else.

In two consecutive mornings I've driven past this pond at 9 am (it's right next to the office parking lot) thinking "oh what wonderful colours and a crystal clear, totally still water -I should photograph that". However, I was too lazy to stop.

Today I prepared myself for stopping, because it was supposed to be the last sunny morning. Once there, I was so deep in my thoughts that I forgot to stop! But I parked my car to the far end of the parking lot and walked back to the pond (about 100 metres) with my camera - despite the two workers who kept staring at me suspiciously. Only one thing was wrong: I was too EARLY - the sun had not yet risen above the trees on the left, so the yellow birches on the "island" were in shadow. Sigh. But at least the water was still... And of course a couple of fluffy clouds in the sky would've been nice too.

EOS 40D:

Im September 2007 wurde die Nachfolgerin der Canon EOS 30D auf den Markt gebracht - die Canon Eos 40 D.

Wie auch diesem Mal brachte dies einige Fortschritte, so waren gegenüber der nun "alten" 30D einige neue Funktionen bereit dafür, vom erfahrenen Amateurfotografen oder semiprofessionellen Anwender ausprobiert zu werden.

Die digitale Spiegelreflexkamera ist mit einem CMOS-Sensor im APS-C-Format ausgerüstet und bietet omit bei einem Verlängerungsfaktor von 1,6 eine effektive Pixelanzahl von 10,1 Megapixel.

Dies bedeutet eine Bildgröße von 3.888 x 2.592 Pixel in den Formaten RAW und JPEG zu machen. Trotz dieser Größe sind Reihenaufnahmen von bis zu 6,5 Bilder möglich, diese Gewschwindigkeit kann für max. 75 JPEG-Bilder (Auflösung: Groß/Fein) beibehalten werden.

Die Funktionen der Canon EOS 40 D umfassen Automatik, Portrat, Landschaft, Nahaufnahme, Sport, Nachtprogramm, Programmautomatik, Blendenautomatik, Zeitautomatik, Manuell, Schärfentiefenautomatik und darüberhinaus sind drei weitere CUSTOM-Einstellungen möglich. Bereits bei der Auslösung können Fotoeffekte angewendet werden, diese ermöglichen etwa Schwarz-Weiß-Aufnahmen und optionale Einstellungen für diverse Filter und Tonungen.

Die Canon EOS 40 D lässt zwei Farbräume auswählen - sRGB und Adobe RGB.

(Adobe RGB ist ein größerer Farbraum als sRGB es ist somit möglich, mehr Farben darzustellen. Aus diesem Grund wird das Verwenden des Farbraumes Adobe RGB meist gerade dann empfohlen, wenn die Bilder nachher weiter bearbeitet werden. Adobe RGB wird darüber hinaus bei diversen Verlagen, Bildagenturen als Arbeitsfarbraum gewünscht. Beim Druck auf dem heimischen Tintenstrahldrucker erreicht der "Otto-Normal-Anwender" nur selten wirkliche Qualitätssteigerungen gegenüber einem sRGB-Ausdruck. Deswegen ist bei Privatanwender meiner Meinung nach nicht unbedingt notwendig, den Farbraum auf Adobe RGB umzustellen. Wer aber mag, und sich mit dem Farbmanagement auskennt, hat zumindest die Möglichkeit.)

Die Kamera ist weiters mit einem 3 Zoll großen Display mit 230.000 Pixeln ausgestattet, das nicht nur die allgemeinen Erfordernisse erfüllt - wie etwa die Fotovorschau und die Darstellungen des Menüprogrammes - sondern auch für das Sucher-Echtzeitbild verwendet werden kann - dem sogenannten Live-View-Modus.

Während man bei früheren Modellen von digitalen Spiegelreflex-Kameras des öfteren eine Sensorreinigung vornehmen musste, ist nun ein selbstreinigendes System inkludiert, das beim Einschalten der Kamera durch Vibrationen den Staub vom Sensor "abschüttelt" und somit die manchmal doch wieder unvermeidliche Sensorreinigung - vor allem bei Verwendung der Kamera in staubigen Bereichen - etwas verzögert und somit doch ein wenig länger ungetrübten Fotografiegenuss garantiert.

Wie bereits bei der Canon EOS 30D ist auch diesmal das Gehäuse aus einer leichten Magnesium-Legierung, die die Kamera robuster einhüllt als etwa das Plastik-Gehäuse anno dazumals bei der Canon EOS 400D.
