Menció especial per aquests ambiciosos Castellers de Lleida, que no perdonen una, diada a Sants amb els amfitrions una mica en plan "divertimento" i catacrac! queixalada dels de la Terra Ferma, quatre de vuit i pilar de sis, molt bé Castellers de Lleida!

Ho transcric perquè és molt significatiu qui ho diu, com ho diu, i què l'ha motivat a dir això. És una bona mostra que el camí es demostra caminant, que l'esforç i la constància donen els seus fruits, que la feina ben feta no té fronteres, i totes les frases fetes que hi vulgueu posar. En resum, només hi ha dos maneres de fer les coses: bé o malament.

Eufòric? Sí. Afònic? També. Parcial? Només faltaria. Estem en un moment dolç, deixeu-me disfrutar, deixeu-nos assaborir cada castell de vuit, cada pilar de sis, cada folre ben fet que provem (de moment, només als assaigs), deixeu que ens alegrem per cada llenya que no hem tingut (enguany només ens han caigut dos pilars de sis carregats). En aquesta vida tot és cíclic, ja tornaran les vaques magres. De moment, hem de seguir amb aquesta bona línia que ens porta a disfrutar dels castells de 8 bàsics i de plantejar-nos nous reptes.

Potser diumenge vinent a Barcelona ho tornarem a repetir, o potser no. Sigui com sigui, ens en podrem anar de vacances (amb el permís de Vilanova del Segrià) amb mitja temporada superada amb nota. Cert, falta el tres, però queda mitja temporada, la meitat bona!

Com va 4? ja era hora que arribèssis , eh! 20 mesos per veure't descarregat, i ara t'apareixes així, tant de guays..com si no passés res, on cony érets l'any passat?espero veure't més sovint per plaça i que a partir d'ara segueixis igual de bé.

Doncs bé, efectivament el quatre ha tornat, i sembla que per quedar-se, perquè aquest migdia l'hem tornat a descarregar al Passeig de Sant Joan de Barcelona. No ha sigut tan insultant com el de Reus perquè s'ha desquadrat una mica, però ha sigut més ràpid i molt sobrat. Amb el proper que descarreguem (probablement diumenge vinent) serà el desè que descarreguem en total, igualant el nombre de tresos de vuit.

Les sensacions que he viscut amb aquests dos castells, el de Reus i el d'avui, han sigut fantàstiques. A Reus em va emocionar sentir l'ovació del públic, amb xiulets i tot, perquè els afeccionats de Reus són gent entesa i van disfrutar veient un quatre tan ben quadrat i parat. Podeu sentir els xiulets en aquest video. Vaig disfrutar moltíssim a Reus, per primer cop a la plaça Mercadal, molt més plena del que m'esperava, i amb un ambient de gran diada. I a més, amb pilar polèmic, què més volem?

En el d'avui a Barcelona l'hem descarregat tot i estar desquadrat, però en els pisos superiors anava tan sobrat que a segons i terços no hem hagut de patir gens. De fet, així és com haurien d'anar les coses en una colla capaç de descarregar vuit vegades el 3 de 8 al 2007: el normal és que el quatre es descarregui, més bonic o més lleig, però el quatre es defensa i es treballa, té molt marge. En canvi el 3 de 8 no té tan marge i en vam descarregar vuit.

Pel que fa al pilar de sis (2 carregats consecutivament)... doncs bé, a ningú li agrada caure, però aconseguir dos pilars de 6 al juny és un èxit que només han aconseguit colles de nou. El pilar de 6 és un castell dificilíssim, que sempre pot caure per bé que es tingui.

Molt s'haurien de torçar les coses per a que aquesta no sigui una grandíssima temporada (la millor) pels Castellers de Lleida. Ben aviat al quatre de vuit l'acompanyarà el tres, i entrarem en una fase on disfrutarem de la clàssica de 8, que podrem tirar ben bé a cada plaça, mentre que als assaigs ens podrem dedicar als nous reptes. Gràcies a uns consells d'última hora, hem canviat unes peces clau del folre, i sembla mentida com s'ha notat, divendres vam fer la millor prova de folre de la temporada juntament amb la de festa major.

Per veure com segueix la història, la propera cita és diumenge 6 de juliol al migdia, al barri de Sants de Barcelona, acompanyats dels Xiquets de Reus i els Castellers de Sants. Es tracta d'una diada inventada per posar juntes tres colles amb solvència contrastada i molts punts en comú, però que ara mateix viuen en nivells diferents: Sants acaba de descarregar la torre de vuit amb folre i prepara l'assalt al nou. Lleida està a punt a punt de tirar la clàssica de vuit, i Reus assegura i encara no té els castells de vuit a punt. De tota manera, segueix sent un cartell de luxe, una llaminadura d'actuació per a sibarites dels castells, per a entesos de debò que no només surten de casa per veure gamma extra.

Barcelona acaba de pujar una posició ja que fins diumenge només tenia 1 castell de 8, i tot indica que en les properes setmanes podria pujar ràpidament fins a la segona posició!

Doncs dit i fet. Per segon any consecutiu els primers castells de vuit els hem fet per Sant Joan a Reus: 4 de 8, 2 de 7, 5 de 7 i un polèmic pilar de 6 carregat.

Els propers castells de vuit, si tot va com ha d'anar, els veurem en tres actuacions consecutives a Barcelona:

• Diumenge 29 de juny al migdia a Barcelona. Passeig de Sant Joan amb Indústria (mapa). Amb Castellers de la Vila de Gràcia i Marrecs de Salt.
• Diumenge 6 de juliol al migdia a Barcelona. Plaça d'Osca (mapa). Amb Castellers de Sants i Xiquets de Reus.
• Diumenge 13 de juliol al migdia a Barcelona. Plaça dels Àngels, davant del MACBA (mapa). Amb Castellers de Barcelona i Castellers d'Esparreguera.

Si aconseguim fer castells de vuit en aquestes actuacions, seria gairebé com haver fet una gran temporada abans de la part forta (setembre-octubre).

Doncs bé, m'acaba d'arribar la notícia de què hi seran presents, però el que si que no sé si hi tindrà a veure alguna colla castellera.

La notícia és la següent (de Fila7):

Fila7 Events, per encàrrec de la Generalitat, dissenyarà i produirà l’acte del Dia de Catalunya (11 de setembre) a l’Expo 2008 de Saragossa, que serà retransmès en directe per la televisió catalana.
Aquest acte, de 15 a 20 minuts de durada, es dirà “Escultura de l’aigua”.
La proposta és escenificar un gran símbol: els castellers. Conceptualment es tracta de construir una imatge potent i significativa en la qual es representa la relació entre la naturalesa del nostre planeta i el nostre cos mitjançant l’aigua, ja que el cos humà esta constituït en un 70% d’aigua.
La direcció artística serà de Hansel Cereza, fundador i ex membre de La Fura dels Baus, coreògraf del Circ du Soleil, director de la Cerimònia d’Inauguració del Fòrum, entre d’altres. La banda sonora, composada per Pep Sala (ex membre del grup Sau), serà interpretada en directe amb cors i orquestra. La imatge de l’aigua serà creada per Frank Aleu (Urano).

Doncs bé aqui teniu la notícia, no he trobat més informació però que cadascú es faci una idea de per on van els trets.

Vosaltres en sabeu alguna cosa més?

El millor moment del cap de setmana, el dinar a Sa Marina, Valldemossa, en una caleta gairebé inaccessible, vam menjar peix del bo arran de mar. Gambetes al ajillo, llobarro a la planxa, cassola de rap... fantàstic! Per postres gat, una mena de pastís borratxo semblant a la tarta de Santiago. De gats n'hi havia molt en aquella caleta, segurament atrets per les sobres de peix del restaurant. Estaven tots endormiscats, prenent el sol, contribuint a l'ambient de calma immensa. No em digueu que la imatge d'un gat dormint no us relaxa. La foto no és d'un gat, però també relaxa:

L'anècdota que m'agradaria compartir és la d'un nen que viatjava sol a l'avió. Els seus pares estan divorciats i es fa un tip de volar sol entre Mallorca i Barcelona. Son pare, a Mallorca, sempre li reserva el mateix seient, llavors se'n va a la cafeteria en un lloc assajat i el nen pot veure'l quan l'avió surt. Nosaltres no ens ho creiem, però quan l'avió es separa veiem una silueta humana damunt d'una cadira que saluda incansablement amb els dos braços.

Però aquest any hi ha gran novetat en aquest sentit. A Súria, un poble de la comarca del Bagès, presumeixen de tenir les "caramelles" més multitudinàries de tota Catalunya, celebració que es duu a terme per Setmana Santa. Les caramelles, segons definició de la Wikipèdia, són:  "cançons populars que es canten per Pasqua o Pasqua Florida. El grup de cantaires es planta al peu del balcó dels amics i d'altra gent del poble canta unes cançons. S'hi fan acompanyar per instruments musicals diversos (el rigo-rago, el regue-rec, el cataclinc, els bastonets o garrots, el cèrcol, el buiro, els campanillers, els ferrets, el salteri, el picacanya, el violí de pastor, la xifla, etc.). La cistella, lligada al capdamunt d'una llarga vara i tota adornada de cintes, arriba fins al balcó de l'homenatjat el qual, en correspondència, hi deixa el seu donatiu. El Cant més antic de les Caramelles ha estat els Goigs del Roser o de les Botifarres". 

Doncs bé, aquest any han decidit introduir un element nou a la Setmana Santa, "Els Castells", i que pot ser el principi d'una colla castellera estable depenent de l'exit. Segons anuncia el programa de festes: "Aquest any, la unió de caramellaires de diferents colles incorpora una activitat castellera a la Pasqua de Súria. Gent de totes les edats, amb preparació, assaig i tècnica, faran pinya per carregar i descarregar un castell caramellaire, al qual tothom es podrà sumar".

I aquest aixecament d'un castell es realitzarà aquest dissabte al pavelló de la localitat. Després d'això, haurem d'estar atents a si finalment tira endevant el projecte d'una colla castellera a Súria. Seguirem informant.

As I have said many times before, I love the castellers and if I lived in Catalunya permanently, I'd join a colla castellera.  So today I made this poster (11 x 14 inches) with some of the pictures I took during my year in Barcelona.

Here's a video for you, I always get goosebumps and tears in my eyes when the castell is undone. It's an unbelievable feeling to be in the main square of Vilafranca del Penedès at St Felix.

Els Castellers de Sant Boi són una important entitat que proporcionen una informació molt ben treballada a la seva web. Si vols conèixer el món dels castells, aquesta és la teva.

Los Castellers según la wikipedia son:

Un Casteller es una persona que forma parte de una colla castellera para formar Castells (del catalán) (en castellano: castillos). Es el nombre de una tradición típica de ciertas comarcas catalanas, en especial las del Tarragonès, Alt Camp y Alt Penedès, consistente en levantar torres humanas de varios pisos de altura. En la actualidad esta tradición se ha extendido por toda Cataluña.

Tuve por causalidades de la vida la suerte de presenciar como construyen un Castell, iba paseando por las calles de Barcelona y en alguna plaza vi mucha gente reunida, al acercarme para ver a que se debía el tumulto me encontré con este espectáculo bien interesante. La idea es que con el trabajo en equipo se demuestra que se pueden hacer muchas cosas, así como construir un castillo. La última pieza del castillo es un niño o niña, el "anxaneta”, y me entere que en año pasado hubo un accidente por lo que ahora el niño sube con un casco que lo protege ante una eventual caída.

El origen es también muy curioso porque parece provenir de unos bailes o danzas llamadas la Muixeranga, donde al final del baile se construían castillos humanos. Con el tiempo la parte final del baile que consistía en construir castillos humanos fue tomando fuerza hasta que fue separada del baile propiamente dicho y grupos concursaban entre si para construir el castell mas alto.

Don't know who the castellers are?  Check here, here, and videos here (I always get goosebumps when the music starts). They were my favourite element of Catalan culture and the energy in the square when they succeed in putting together a difficult tower is ubelievable... My husband used to say that if we lived in Catalonia for good, he would have joined a group of castellers.

One of the themes I like to photograph is children. They are so natural and full of expression that I can't resist taking pictures of kids playing or simply running around. Photographing people can be very hard, particularly if you are shy like me. I don't want to feel like an intruder and I'm sometimes worried people will misunderstand my interest or be suspicious of my motives for taking their pictures. My photography teacher back in Toronto told me to be obvious about it - just ask, she said. Even if you don't speak the language, all you have to do is point a picture at someone, smile and raise your thumb up or your eyebrows in a question-like manner. Nine times out of ten people will comply. Yet, I felt shy most times and I used to try to sneak the odd shot with my telephoto lens. But my new 50mm lens requires me to get right up close to people to be able to get a good shot. So lately, I've become a little bolder. And the results have been fantastic! This weekend I would point my camera at little kids, often dressed in costumes, and every time that the parents were around and noticed me, they would tell the kid to look at me, smile, etc. Nobody looked at me suspiciously or were troubled by my interest in any way.  I should have the pictures by the end of the week to share with you... This one I took last year, during the Festes de la Mercè, the other Barcelona patron saint:

Well, no Catalan festival is complete without a parade of giants, big heads, water-spewing dragons, a presentation of castellers, and some correfocs. You gotta love Catalan culture; it's so rich!! I'm particularly fond of the castellers, the amazing groups of people of all ages (6-80) who make human towers, which they call castles.

Here's a picture from the Diada Castellera de Vilafranca del Penedès, this past summer:

The groups are identified by the colour of their shirt. Here in Barcelona there are several neighbourhood groups like the Castellers de Gracia, Sants, Poble Sec, Sant Andreu, etc. There is also the Castellers de Barcelona, who wear red shirts and are up in the higher leagues. All the groups compete in making towers of various difficulties, and I wrote about them a few months ago when we went to check out the best group of all - the castellers de Vilafrance del Penedes.

This Sunday we got right into the group and almost felt part of it. It was great! I got some really near upclose shots and can't wait to get my pictures back from the lab! Alan should have some on his blog during the next few days.

If we lived here full time, we would definitely join a casteller group and volunteer at the various neighbourhood Festa Major. If we had kids I would definitely look for a place where they could learn the traditional dances. It's really nice and I'm glad they are keeping these traditions going....

In January and February I was in Exam Hell so I would rather forget those...

March

March 22nd we left Toronto to Montreal, where we spent a week relaxing and visiting family and friends. On the 29th we left for Paris were we spent 4 days before heading down, by train, to Barcelona...

April

We arrived in Barcelona on April 3rd, and after settling into our apartment, we took a bus tour of the city to get our bearings... The first thing I noticed were the wonderful balconies in the modernist buildings... And the beach of course! And our first Catalan festival - Sant Jordi!

May

Our first visitors arrived! Pearl and Al came from Toronto to spend two weeks in Salou, just south of Tarragona. We spent the weekend with them and visited Tarragona and they came to spend a few days with us in Barcelona. At the end of the month, Melissa, a Brazilian friend who was spending some time in Porto, came for a weekend.

June

This month I had a conference in Madrid. After the conference we spent a few days in Toledo, and it was really worth it! Despite being early June, the area of Madrid was hit was a heatwave that brought temperatures up to 40! Our retreat in Madrid became the park El Retiro. Loved Toledo!

July

Summertime! We discovered St Pol de Mar and our friends Gordon, Jean, and Jen came to visit from Montreal.

August

The highlight of this month was a weekend in Delta del Ebre with our friends Jackie, Sebastian, Naomi, and Francisca. The month ended with the Diada Castellera de Vilafranca del Penedes, the best castellers event in Catalunya.

September

Our friends Norbert and Carole came for a visit and we had a great time showing them our new city. Norbert and Carole had been to Barcelona before, but that was back in the 1960s... Barcelona celebrated its patron saint in the week-long festival of La Mercè...

October

My parents came for a visit and my little nephew proved to be quite the little trooper ;)

November

We visited Vic and our friend Christine visited from Montreal. Together we explored Girona. Ahh, the wonderful autumn colours...

Every town and, in the case of larger cities like Barcelona, every neighbourhood has its Festa Major, an event that can take a whole week and for which the local people prepare all year. We witnessed a few so far - we saw the giants parade in St Pol de Mar, attended several days of the Festa Major de Gracia, and last wednesday went to see some of the Festa Major de Vilafranca del Penedes, one of the most authentic and considered of national interest.

August 30th is considered particularly important during the week-long Festa Major de Vilafranca since it's the feast day of its patron saint - St Felix. It is also the day when the Colla Castellera de Vilafranca, the best in Catalunya, gives its most anticipated performance. While the rest of Spain praise the individual courage of the bullfighter, the Catalans value the collective efforts and organization of its castellers. Basically groups of up to 400 1000 people, they build human towers (castles) up to 10 storeys high. The castells (castles in Catalan) are referred to by the number of people at the core of the structure and the number of storeys they reach. On wednesday the Vilafranca group successfully completed a tres de deu amb folre i manilles (three of ten with folre and manilles), basically a ten-storey castle with three people on each floor and two extra bases (the folre and manilla). This was only the second time it had ever been done. You can see the video of the first attempt at their site. It is VERY impressive.

Jargon - there are pillars, torres and castells. Pillars have only one person per storey and they usually walk into the square in this formation:

A pillar of two people per storey is called a torre. This is the first torre of seven done by the Vilafranca group, back in 1969:

A castell has more than three people per storey. Nine storeys is as high as they get with only the Vilafranca group ever having done one of ten. At the base of the castell is the pinya. An extra base above that level is called a folre and the very high ones often need an extra one on top of the folre, the manilla. Castellers are of all ages - from 6 to 80 - and the younger and lighter go to the top. The star of the show is the anxaneta, a 6-9 year old that crowns the castell. The castell is only considered complete when the anxaneta gets to the top and raises his/her hand. That moment is indescribeable - you have to look at the videos at the site above to get a better sense.

Alex has read about this pueblo in her research papers which date in the 1300s. The pueblo itself has it's origins in the 12th century. The same time that Henry the Second of England married Elenor of Aquitane, the Tower of London took in its 1st prisoner, Crusaders marched into Beirut causing a bloodbath. You can see this is an old pueblo.
Anyhow, we drove up to Villafranca in Sebastian's car and arrived before the activities took place so we managed to get a half decent spot in the square to watch everything going on. The principle reason we were going was to watch the Castellers. Villafranca has a very famous and accomplished team.

Castellers are the people who belong to a colla castellera (team) devoted to making the most impressive castells (towers of human construction) in popular festivals in Catalonia.

Their typical clothes are white trousers, black sash, shawl and colored shirt with the team's emblem. While performing they usually go barefoot so that they don't hurt the other castellers as they climb and so that they have more sensitivity in their feet.

The sash is the most important part of their clothing since it protects the lower part of the back and it's very useful as an additional help in climbing. This piece of cloth has diverse lengths and heights depending on the casteller's position inside the tower and also on personal taste. Its length can range from 1,5 to 8 meters, and it is usually shorter for higher positions.

The castellers, which are a team of acrobats (some of them children), arrange themselves into a multi-tiered structure or tower, sometimes as high as seven-people. The Vilafranca team built one today of 10 people. Alex has photos and comments of their team.
Once the base is constructed a person then climbs to the top of the tower - they are known as the enxaneta and are usually children eight to twelve years old. The accidents are unusual during the construction of a castell. The 6 of august os 2006, in Matarò a 12 year old child fell off the castell and died. Before this, the last mortal accident was in 1981 in Torredembarra. To date there have only been three fatalities in the Castellers history.

Castellers have a motto: "Strength, balance, courage and reason".

In Catalan the word castell means castle, although a castell with two persons per level is a torre (tower) and is usually called a pilar if it consists of just one person per level.

The tradition originated in the Spanish region of Catalonia; more specifically, in the southern part of that region near the city of Tarragona. The tradition later spread to other regions of Catalonia, and has become very popular. However, the best and most skilled castellers are still found near Tarragona although the Vilafranca team is considered one of the best.

This one is not considered a castel and was for demonstration purposes. It was probably to give less experienced castellers a chance to perfom.

Getting ready for level six......

Here they are capping the tower with the enxaneta climbing to their positons.

One of the other perfomances that I really wanted to see were 'El Correfoc', 'diablos y demonios', devils and demons armed with all sorts of fireworks go through the streets. I'd seen them briefly in Gracia and I couldn't believe what I saw. I have a few photos of them in Vilafranca.

Here they are marching towards the square. I had to get out of their way, those sparks burn.

Once they were in the square they danced around and let their dragon loose.

They finished up with really noisy rockets. The sound in that square bordered on painful but they were spectacular.

We drove back along the coast and stopped in Sitges for a clara (Beer and lemonade). The ride along the coast is magnificent. I can only imagine what it must be like all down south.
