In the interview Mark cited the practical initiatives CC is employing to reach out to more indviduals and organizations.

...developing the legal and technology underpinnings of Creative Commons licensing, kind of educating the world about Creative Commons and how it can apply in different sectors is what we do, essentially. One of the things I'm most excited about is a case studies project we've started, which we now have 120, I think, case studies, ranging from artists, to companies, to non-profits, etc., looking at how people in organizations have used Creative Commons licensing, what their practices are.

And the idea being that when we talk to a new organization, we can say, 'Here's something like you who has successfully used Creative Commons licenses, and you can look at what they've done, follow the example,' as opposed to in very theoretical terms, explaining there's copyright and it can restrict what people can do. And we've got the solution called Creative Commons licenses. So, that's kind of an education tool that we're developing that, I think, is going to long-term, greatly increase our effectiveness.

... Embracing the open solutions also means thinking a little bit more openly.

1. Taking an overly familiar and too casual tone.

Example: Hi Mark, I wanted to schedule a meeting for you with James next week. How does Thursday look for you? Let me know when you can. Thanks! Take Care, Chrissy.

Ok, that’s fine if you’re friends with Mark. If you’re not and Mark is a client or business associate, this is way to informal and it just makes you look very unprofessional. Try sprucing it up a bit, especially if you are initiating the e-mail conversation. Once you see how they respond, you can mirror their style.

Example: Dear Mr. Smith, I’d like to schedule a meeting for you with James Edwards in the near future. He has some time available on Thursday. Please let me know if this would work for you and, if so, what time you would like to meet. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Thank you for your time. Most Sincerely, Christine Scivicque.

Reply: Hi Christine, Thursday is fine. Please put me down for 2:00. Thanks! Mark

Reply: Hi Mark, Thanks for the quick reply! Thursday at 2:00 is perfect. We’ll see you then. Chrissy

2. CC’ ing too many people (or the same person too many times).

Only CC the people who really need to know what the email is about. You don’t want to flood your boss’s inbox with things he’s not really concerned about. When I first started, I wanted to show my boss that I was doing what he asked me to do so I always sent him a copy of my emails. Then, the responder always hit “reply all” and before he knew it, he was getting multiple emails that had no action required for him. Eventually, he was totally annoyed with seeing all my correspondence and I had to stop. I only do it now for critical things that he may need to know I’ve corresponded on or things he has to take action on.

3. Trusting the computer SPAM filter.

My computer, like most, throws random email into the junk file at its own discretion. I’ve found important messages in there months after they were sent. It’s like the Bermuda Triangle for email. I check it every day now without fail. There is just too much chance for huge problems to ensue. If you have a SPAM filter, which I think we all do at this point, sometimes the computer is just not smart enough to know what’s junk and what’s not. Double check it. There’s no harm to it.

4. Sending Email Instead of Talking.

Be careful not to fall into the trap of sending email instead of having a real face to face conversation. Building strong social networks at work is important and it just can’t be done over email. As my boss says, “Wear out the carpet!”. That means, don’t be shy about going to visit people’s offices with your questions. Talking face to face gets the point across much easier and much faster most of the time. Send it in email if you need a paper record of the conversation. Otherwise, talk and get to know your co-workers. It makes work more fun and it improves communication immensely. Likewise, if you find yourself writing a page long email to a client, stop and pick up the phone instead.

5. Sending the right email to the wrong person (and vice versa).

Watch out for that “auto-fill” feature that fills in the address of the person the computer thinks you’re sending a message to. Computers are dumb. Don’t forget that. But if you don’t double check the computer, you’re dumb too.

Diese Freiheit, die Julia beschreibt, möchte ich Copyleft-Freiheit nennen. Dies ist die minimale Freiheit, die jeder Weiterverbreiter jeder anderen Person gönnen muss. Die maximale theoretische Copyleft-Freiheit wäre, wenn es keinen (brauchbaren) Unterschied gibt, ob man der ursprüngliche Author ist oder nicht bzgl. der Weiterverwendung des Werkes. Insbesondere soll der ursprüngliche Author keine Informationen zurückhalten können, die verwertbar sind (auch von Material zum Herstellen des Werkes, wie herausgeschnittene Szenen eines Filmes). Das Gegenteil der Copyleft-Freiheit ist die anarchische Freiheit: die Freiheit die Freiheit anderen Leuten nicht weiterzugeben („die Freiheit Sklaven zu halten“).

Ursprüngliche Freiheit hingegen nenne ich die Freiheit, die ein Werk in seiner ursprünglichen Form hat. OpenSSH stellt eben auch den Quelltext (gemäß der Definition in der GPL) zur Verfügung, aber verlangt nicht, dass andere das auch tun. Die ursprüngliche Freiheit eines Werkes wird (im Gegensatz) zur Copyleft-Freiheit, aber nicht nur durch die Lizenz erreicht. Der Author von CC-Musik muss zwar nicht die einzelnen Tonspuren veröffentlichen, er kann dies aber. Und wer seinen Mitmenschen das kreative Remixen und Bearbeiten erleichtern will, der sollte dies auch (leider nicht von der CC thematisiert, so dass die meisten Menschen nicht einmal auf den Gedanken kommen ihre Quellen mit zu veröffentlichen; der CC-Film Big Buck Bunny bietet hingegen auch das „Entire Studio backup“ an). Ein Werk mit wenig Copyleft-Freiheit (z. B. CC by oder BSD-Lizenz muss also keinesfalls weniger Frei sein als ein Werk mit mehr Copyleft-Freiheiten (z. B. AGPL).

Nun, warum wollen einige Leute sich auf die ursprüngliche Freiheit beschränken statt Copyleft-Freiheiten (z. B. Apache-Lizenz statt GPL) zu haben, wenn man keinen Wert auf die anarchische Freiheit legen? Dadurch, dass man verlangt, dass diese Freiheiten weitergegeben werden, muss der Künstler/Programmierer verschiedene Verpflichtungen einhalten. Bei der Mozilla Public License u. a. wird verlangt, dass der Quellcode 6 Monate lang nach der Veröffentlichung (im Gegensatz zur GPL, bei dem man aus drei Möglichkeiten wählen darf²) bereitstellt. Diese Verpflichtung ist so groß, dass die Linuxdistribution Debian, diese sowohl als unzumutbar ansieht und selbst nicht in der Lage ist diese zu erfüllen. Bei der GNU FDL andererseits wird verlangt, dass die Lizenz mitgegeben (und nicht nur einen Link dazu), was problematisch ist, wenn Bilder für einen Flyer oder Poster verwendet werden (oder aus anderen Gründen der Platz stark limitiert ist). Die Freiheit sich nicht, um weiteres kümmern zu müssen bezeichne ich im Folgenden die „Kummerlose-Freiheit“ (Namensvorschläge sind Willkommen).

Wenn wir also nun eine freie Lizenz nach ihrer Freiheit klassifizieren wollen, haben wir drei verschiedene Freiheiten: die Copyleft-Freiheit, die ursprüngliche Freiheit und die Kummerlose-Freiheit. Bezüglich der ursprüngliche Freiheit sollte man eventuell auch die Lizenz als Ökosystem ansehen und sich fragen, welche ursprüngliche Freiheiten über dem Minimum hinaus meistens gegeben werden. Die maximale ursprüngliche Freiheit ist bei alle freien Lizenzen gleich und maximal (im Gegensatz zu proprietären Lizenzen wie CC by-nc und CC by-nd), da eine Freie-Lizenz nichts unmöglich machen darf, höchstens der Aufwand für bestimmte Anwendungsbereiche steigen (was durch die sinkende Kummerlose-Freiheit berücksichtigt wird).

Vergleichen wir nun die GNU Lizenzen (GPL und FDL) und die CC Lizenzen, so ist auffällig, dass diese andere Schwerpunkte setzen. GNU Lizenzen versuchen „aggressiv“ die Freiheiten zu verteidigen und somit eine besonders große Copyleft-Freiheit zu erzielen, während die CC Lizenzen versuchen eine möglichst große Kummerlose-Freiheit zu haben. Werke unter CC Lizenzen (by-sa) brauchen nur eine minimale Modifikation (Logo und URLs reichen aus), während ein Werk unter der GNU FDL u. a. eine transparente Kopie³, sowie die oben erwähnte Beifügung der Lizenz.

Ich hoffe ich habe mit diesem etwas langgeratenen Blogeintrag einige Aspekte der unterschiedlichen Lizenzphilosophien oder zumindest einige Denkanstöße dafür gegeben zu haben. Der Julia wünsche ich viel Erfolg bei der Diplomarbeit.

This popular site is divided into areas by banking and hedgerows. A rear gate gives access to gorse-covered sand dunes, through which a ten-minute walk leads to a cliff path down to the beach facing St Ives Bay. For the less mobile, a beach-side car park is only a one mile drive away. The area is peppered with typical little Cornish fishing villages such as Coverack, Cadgwith, Mullion, Porthleven and Mousehole. This area enjoys the best of both worlds: it is delightfully attractive and recommended for quiet exploration, whilst there are plenty of attractions for family days out.  During the school summer break, the site hums with exuberant children.

Bathing off the coast can be dangerous. Particular note should be taken of any local warning notices.

Carnon Downs Caravan Park is an excellent base to explore Cornwall, just 3 miles south of the cathedral city of Truro with its excellent shopping centre, restaurants, museum and theatre.  The park has 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds with spacious pitches, backed by hedges and flowering shrubs. Wonderful walks can be enjoyed on and from the park; the River Fal and the creekside hamlets of Penpol and Devoran are just a short stroll away. The village of Carnon Downs is small and peaceful with an inn, minimarket, garden centre, a PYO fruit farm and a fortnightly farmers’ market. Nearby Loe beach offers watersports tuition and hire.

Today also saw the Return of some of the Corps from their summer breaks which brought us back to our usual numbers, we started the meeting together as usual.. sang, prayed and danced around before moving downstairs to our weekly Sunday School Classes - this week the Junior Solders Group was led by Anne Le Marchant and Victoria - and we really bit into one of the most core teachings of the Church The Ten Commandments which are Gods only rules for us to live by, sometimes they can be hard to follow - but if you follow them correctly then you will have a good Christ-filled life.

To make our Class more exciting we played a game, did a small craft-poster activity and using Victoria's Musical talent practiced a '10 Commandments Rap' complete with beatboxing and streetwise dancing to show the rest of the congregation at the end of the Morning Meeting.

We were putting the finishing touches to the Rap when we were called back up to the Worship Hall, to close Worship and of course perform what we had been learning - Victoria led the rap, Morgan, Stuart and Kirstie turned their hands to a little bit of Beatboxing and Francesca, Courtney and Johnathon showed us how they dance on the streets... well it was much better than reading them out of a bible Thou, Covet, etc etc

After we all shared the Statement of Faith together we sang one of our new Action Songs, which we learned at MaM Camp, which is called 'Flabberghasted' - which has a very fresh techno feel to it... I think it is the favourite of many.

Of course the fun doesnt stop there this week... as the kids prepare to join us aboard Starship Clifton for our annual Holiday Club.. which has taken a space theme - this year it is called Starship Discovery. if you do have a ticket to board this week, we look forward to seeing you! :-)

After the Morning Worship we tucked into a good meal, which fueled us for an afternoon filled with Running, Jumping and Hiding - we had a few good games of Pool as well this week! :-D, its good to see those red and yellow balls are back where they belong!
