So, right now there is a Denver ballot initiative for and "Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission". I'll be calling it EAC for short. You can check out the campaign website here. According to the campaign site, 57 extraterrestrial humanoids have been classified, the government has not only conspired to cover up the presence of extraterrestrials but the clean energy technologies they have offered us as well, and that photos from NASA are doctored to remove evidence of extraterrestrial life. For the evidence of these claims, they give a link to the Star Trek Institute The Disclosure Project, a non-profit organization dedicated to uncovering the truth about our alien life. The Men In Black big bad U.S. government, though, is standing the way. Here is a copy of the bill itself.

If your from Denver, I urge you attend David Grinspoon's lecture on the ballot initiative before you consider voting for this bill. The title of his lecture is "Alien Life: The Science and the Hype: Why Denver Doesn't Need an Extraterrestrial Affairs Commission". David Grinspoon is the curator of astrobiology at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science, author of "Lonely Planets" and "Venus Revealed", and winner of the Carl Sagan Medal. The lecture will be on the Auraria campus, 9000 Auraria Parkway, Denver CO 80217, in the North Classroom Atrium A/B from 3pm to 5pm on October 23rd. His personal web page is David Grinspoon's Word. Metro State Atheists is hosting the event, the Center For Inquiry will be co-sponsoring, and Elles of Splendid Elles will be presenting David Grinspoon.

Yessiree! There is now a freethinkers society in Lethbridge! An initial meeting of six interested parties was held on Friday at a coffee shop downtown and some of the basic goals and so forth were discussed. We are going to be affiliated with the Center for Inquiry, and they are being very helpful. It is all very early days, but a website is currently underdevelopment, and we are working on some bylaws and such. We are planning on becoming a proper, registered non-"prophet" society.

I will keep readers informed! If anyone wants to join or be put on our spam list, just email me at happilyunchurched AT gmail.com

There, go think of something. Its free.

So, I'd like to start my first post out by explaining why I chose the title for this blog that I did. "Such As These" If you guessed that it is from the bible...well of course it is! This is a children's church blog after all.

The title is based on Matthew 19:14

Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these."

                                                                                ~Matthew 19:14

I want the children of Covenant Fellowship to be children 'such as these!' Children who both believe and UNDERSTAND who God really is and what He did for them. I want them to experience the Truth of the Son and be able to worship with an innocently grateful heart. I believe that we sometimes short change our children by honeying up the Word becuase we believe it's too difficult, but I want more for the children at Covenant Fellowship. I want them to have a true knowledge of the Lord as their Savior and in so doing, allow them to begin to cultivate a relationship with Him that will grow as they grow, mature as they mature. I want them praying and seeking God as best they can. I want them to be drawn to Him as He is to them.

The sincerity of their hearts, their blind faith, and their unjaded love for the world and the people around them, stands as an example of who will truly inheret the kingdom of God -those 'such as these.'

"...let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith..."

                                                          ~Hebrews 10:22

The days they were here served a bit like a mini-vacation for us, and we've really had a lot of fun! Everything from sightseeing to some adventures being best unmentioned. (Thanks to S for being our "cool mom"). Anyhow, thanks for some great days, I'm looking forward until next time!

We've finally begun with the practical instructor training. Initially we're flying Cessna 152's, while we're still adapting the hardest part of it all. Doing two things at the same time. Flying, and at the same time constantly talking about what we're doing. I guess women are at kind of an advantage here. ;)

The most time consuming part however is to prepare, and gain instructional knowledge of each and every theoretical lesson that needs to be held for a student. Most probably, we'll spend about 10-15 hours flying, and 100-150 hours writing lesson plans before the checkride.

As far as instructing the technical subjects, I think I have a good advantage from being a ground instructor for the JAA (european) students. I feel that has developed both my instructional and communicative skills lots. (I just hope my students agree with me on this one).

So whats left before the checkride is basically some flying, and getting to know what I'm actually talking about.

Good night!

I just realized that I have lost the PIC privileges due to not completing Bi-annual Flight Review. For all pilots that are certified by FAA, they are required to go to any certified instructor and take 1 hour of oral and 1 hour of flight instruction.

Until then, they can't fly as PIC. If you have taken a flight test for any other FAA certification, you are not required to go for this BFR until next 24 months.

So, all those pilots, who have not gone for their BFR in last 24 months, call your instructor and go flying.

If you don't have one, you can find local instructors using our flight instructor directory

Thanks,

30/08/08
Fuente: Turismo 530

In what is just my second post in a long time, I'm making a point of encouraging everyone to check out The Edger. The Edger is a new and extremely well-produced secularism and atheism activism website. I had the privilege of helping to develop this site, and the people commandeering the operation are all very talented and dedicated. The site is run by student activists from across Canada and the United States, but the goal is to add writers from across the globe. Despite having launched not even a month ago, it has already received endorsements from a number of prominent blogs, including PZ Myers' Pharyngula, Hemant Mehta's The Friendly Atheist, Larry Moran's Sandwalk, Skeptico, Tangled Up In Blue Sky, Primordial Blog, and many more. It's most notable endorsement, however, is from the world's leading secularism/atheism/humanism/freethought activism organization, The Center For Inquiry - not sure if CFI has ran any Internet statements of the sponsorship yet. Written by some of the most engaged young freethought activists in North America, and garnering the support of international leading bloggers and organizations, The Edger is probably one of the biggest additions to the online freethought community in recent memory and stands to be a leading news, views and activism site for freethinkers and secularists across North America and, in time, around the world.

10/08/08
Fuente: Diario Los Andes

I recently spoke to a CFI who works here at a busy flight school here at Addison airport about his students and the number of hours per day he gets to fly. I assumed that he was flying probably 20 hours or so per week, but was shocked to find out that he only oversees four students, and spends maybe two hours per day in the air.

I say I was shocked because the school has plenty of aircraft (3 schweizers, 2 R-44's, and 1 R-22.) But with Silver State helicopters declaring bankruptcy in February of this year, hundreds of students moved on to other flight schools, over loading their fleets and instructors.

What can flight schools to to meet both their clients needs and aide their CFI's by allowing them adequate flight time per month?

What are some of the other alternatives for CFI's who want to build flight time?

So Sunday consisted of trying to get through the day on two hours sleep (after getting to bed at 6 am the night before). The early talks were okay, and there was an alright discussion, which threatened to break into an argument about feminism and affirmative action (to encourage women to be more active), but D.J. Grothe stopped it in time.

The best talk was easily Austin Dacey's (CFI's representative to the UN). He may have even been the best of the conference. I got a signed copy of his book. His topic was getting the left's conscience back and standing up for freedoms in our society today.

Just before leaving Amherst a few Canadian leaders went with Justin Trottier to grab some swag to give away, however we got crashed by D.J. Grothe and were told that although it would seem rational for us to get stuff while we were at CFI, we shouldn't really do it. I did grab a bunch of books though, and a copy of the Free Inquiry where they published four of the Danish cartoons that caused the controversy.

After that I got voluntold to drive back to Toronto with a couple people. We stopped at the Duty Free and I managed to buy Absinthe.

After getting into CFI-Ontario we hung out for a bit before getting a ride from Scott Rowed (Director of CFI-Calgary) to the airport.

I got into Edmonton on most perfectly on time, however they (being Edmonton Airport or Westjet staff) didn't know where to park the plane for ten or fifteen minutes after landing. The WestJet flight attendants did sing us a WestJet song and told a couple jokes though. We also taxied from Pearson to the farthest runway, a good 15 minute drive (in the plane).

Once I got my bag I saw a friend who was picking up his girlfriend, and he offered me a ride, but I had a SkyShuttle ticket that expired at the end of September, so I passed. Then it took 40 minutes before the next Shuttle to University came. Then I forgot my sweater on the shuttle, and finally I got to Lister to set up ICOOPMA stuff an hour later then everyone else.

Then I had to be back at campus for 7:30am on Monday.

The CFI Leadership conference was amazing and a ton of fun. I look forward to next year.

Al final, en medio de tantas estadísticas

22/07/08

Last night I got to sleep at 6:00 am. I was not the last to go to bed (I got up this morning at 8:45 for a 9:00 am checkout). Needless to say I am tired, and most of the people here are too as well.

Yesterday featured some amazing speakers: Joe Nickell, Matt LeClair (who hung out with the student leaders all evening), and more.

Nickell is one of the leading sceptics in the world and he has exposed many pseudo-scientific claims. His talk was on what he called sceptical humanism, which emphasizes respecting people and searching for the truth (scientifically). He argued that its better to be a sceptic who will investigate claims then a doubter or naysayer who just claims "ghosts/etc. aren't real."

LeClair is essentially a modern hero of secularism. He worked against his entire town and county to stop a popular teacher from preaching in his public school. He audio recorded (he had legal one-way consent) lectures where his teacher preached, and also recorded a meeting with his principal and teacher where his teacher denied everything. After this story erupted his entire school, town, and county turned against him (he received a death threat which was ignored by the administration). He never gave up and won a court battle (he never sued) over the issue. His speech was uplifting and motivating and it was great to see such a motivated young man. He is more recently concerned with addressing grave inaccuracies in a civics textbook.

Another interesting thing that came out were preliminary results from CFIs survey of its membership. Among the findings were that the majority are at least college educated, and many (over 75% I believe) earn over $100,000 per year. The best however, came from ideas of what CFI should do. The leading answers were to further promote science, and secular ethics and values. Interesting answers included an "open bar" or "bitch slapping Ben Stein."

Interesting announcements included a CFI Regional Director role, which would bridge gaps between Centres/Communities, campus groups, and other related groups; a new campus based podcast called the Course of Reason; and eventually a CFI group blog called Edger which will feature various freethought bloggers.

Today features a talk by Austin Dacey, CFIs representative to the United Nations, and some food before I head to Toronto to get on a flight to Edmonton, after which I will set up for ICOOPMA.

Finally, the answer of how I can still do this is (1) that I have a lot of caffeine and (2) that it is so stimulating that you can't help but be invigorated.

So today was a long day. I awoke at 6:45 am, had a really nice shower, and headed to breakfast on the first shuttle (I apparently grabbed food before it was kosher this morning, but no one told me not to...). There were several good sessions today.

This morning we listened to scientific naturalist philosopher Dr. John Shook who emphasized my worldview eloquently although arbitraily asserted that no one person can be intelligent so working in groups naturally makes you intelligent (while ignoring any mob psychology), and also giving me some neat ideas about democracy (see later posts).

Later Justin Trottier (CFI-Ontario executive director) gave a pretty good speech on public relations, outreach and the media. And after lunch we used breakout sessions (four fast hours worth) to discuss more Canadian sessions, which was very enlightening.

Then the CFI leaders from across the globe (although mainly from across the States at that time) started arriving (for the CFI Transnational Convocation) which ended with a toast of champagne (the irony being they warned campus leaders not to allow or encourage underage drinking during the conference...).

Finally Paul Kurtz gave an hour and a half speech on Secular Humanism and CFI (although a good speech, he's still pretty dry), followed by Dr. Robert Price discussing “The Age of Unreason” (his new book), which was very entertaining. Amon Dr. Price's best quotes:

“Having 2 PhDs doesn't mean you can get your shoes on...”
“[Julia Sweeney] is God's gift to atheism.”
“It's just a human component to be a wise-ass.”
“Being too polite or dignified in your response is to give your opponent too much ground.”
“[Freethought meetings] shouldn't just be a bunch of nerds, geeks and dweebs.”
“My politics are more Klingon.” [He loved Star Trek]
“Now he's reading Ayn Rand, and liking it.”
“The first humanist I ever knew was Captain Picard”
“Science fiction is the mythology of humanism/atheism.”

And on bad arguments:

“It's so ridiculuous, to describe it is to refute it.”

Overall today was fun, although I have been recruited for a few things I'll be reporting on later, and have a more than full list of topics to blog on for the next week (which is good since I'll be busy with ICOOPMA stuff), as well as new ideas for Terahertz.

I'd like to finish by saying oddly enough we emphasized a couple times today that “freethought naturalists” are opposed to “post-modernist” schools of philosophy, even though everyone who brought it up didn't do it justice to give it a full definision. Basically, they were objecting to relativistic knowledge, which I'll likely have to write more about.

Annoying person #1: the neo-cons and libertarians here. There's too many and I can't deal with arguing socio-economics any more this weekend (it was my Thursday night arguments).

Annoying person #2: The guy who's in physics which makes him an expert on big bang cosmology and the likes, so he can argue for a deist god, even though he keeps calling himself an atheist. He also argues like a really annoying creationist (very in your face, at least I called him on it last night after a bit of drink).

Annoying person #3: The girl who thinks "old anonymous" (when they were just mischievous hackers online doing stuff for the "lulz") was justified because it was "for the lulz" and also thinks she deserves to call herself a humanist. (I argued with her for an hour before I couldn't do it).

However I have about 13-14 hours of sessions today, and then hopefully I don't get into any arguments tonight.

Crossing the border was easy and fast. We left Toronto at 8:00 am and were in Buffalo by 11:30. They didn't ask twice when my ID was just a birth certificate and driver's license (although the Ontarians wondered what an “Operators License” was).

We shopped around a Buffalo mall through the early afternoon and had an American sized lunch and the Cheesecake Factory (although we didn't have any cheesecake), The deals weren't any better hear, and there's a 8.75% state sales tax on your purchases. I found a couple things at a bookstore at the very least.

We got to CFI Transnational at 2:30, about half-an-hour to an hour early, because I guess we were the keeners. The rest of the Canadian contingent (35 people out of 90 students here) trickled in between 5 and 8pm. The Centre here owns their own building and has made a nice place for itself since its inception. I must say the building here blows CFI-Ontario's “historic” building and office away. One cool thing here (besides the A/C in the building, which is very nice) is there library, which is potentially the largest freethought-atheist-humanist-sceptic collection in the world. Unfortunately, you can only access this collection by coming here and looking at the books here. The even have a rare books collection with a few first editions and books dating to the 1700s.

The talks yesterday involved every member present introducing their group (about 2 hours) and an overview of what the point of CFI and us being here is. We also had greasy pizza for dinner.

The highlight of yesterday though was the fact Zak, Emily, (the two who I stayed with in Toronto and who drove me down) and I loaded up on Canadian beer at the supermarket ($20 a flat and $20 for a Heineikin Mini-Keg) and hosted the party of the night. We finally got to interact with students from across the country, and it was pretty cool.

Finally, quotes of yesterday:

Bible Bucking
Jesus said "Go."
If you don't agree with us, you're really stupid. [Out of context I think.]

Today's talks run from 9:00am to 9 or 10 tonight, so it's likely to be a long day.

I arrived in Toronto today almost exactly on schedule We started disembarking the plane at about 2:14pm local, which is exactly what my ticket advertised! Kudos to WestJet!

After a little confusion (Justin Trottier parked at the wrong terminal) I made it to the inconspicuous CFI-Ontario headquarters. Homebase of scepticism in Canada.

I met with Katie, and a few others there and we all went to dinner. There are a large number of events to be prepared for for this conference, and Toronto is uncomfortably warm and muggy. Hopefuly the weather cools or dries a bit, but regardless its so far so good.

I'll post more updates later. Ceers.

On Wednesday morning I will leave for Toronto, Ontario. There I will visit CFI-Ontario and several Canadian freethinkers.

Then on Thursday I will head to Amherst, New York (near Buffalo) via carpool to attend the 2008 CFI Student Leaders Conference. Hopefully I'll get a lot of good ideas for the UAAA and can bring some cool SWAG back.

I'll be sure to post from the road as much as possible (since it will also give me a log of what I did there). So stay tuned!

After I get back (Sunday night) I will also be helping out the ICOOPMA conference at the UofA, which is more physics oriented. I'll post a bit on that if I can too.

It looks to be a busy couple weeks!
