Happy 4th of July :)

So I've never been to the States before, but Happy 4th of July to all Americans!! :) I usually watch some celebrations on the tv, and the fireworks are amazing! I guess it will be the same thing today!

I am currently waiting for lunch to cook, I have to be back at the pool by 1pm. The fog is still hanging around, but it is supposed to clear away today..and you can see the sun trying to break through! Gah, I certainly hope it does! The water temperature is 58F now, so it is slowly moving up.. :P As long as it doesn't go down anymore!

Well, I can't remember if I posted about the chalets recently or not, but I was #2 on the waitlist, and I've been accepted for a room now :) Which I am pumped about!!!!! Morgan was #25, but now she is #4, which is awesome, too! She is in the best position right now. I called into housing this morning to just check up on it all. Thing is, Chelsea wrote us a message on facebook last night and she says she is so frustrated about the chalet situation right now...because she doesn't think Morgan is gonna be accepted and aparantly, another friend of hers asked if she was interested in staying at her apartment....!!!! I am a bit pissed about it. Because Chels is gauranteed at the chalet, she was accepted first, along with Elizabeth. And now Morgan is almost accepted and she is doubting is all again. I am angry that her friend asked her to live with her; we've had these plans for the chalet ever since early in the university year!!! Man! I've just been hopin' and prayin' that Chels won't change her mind for good and bail out on the chalet deal....I told Morgan to call me so we could talk about it and sort it all out between us two, and then we'd just try and convince Chels to not worry. I think it's a little unfair really that Chels even thought of reconsidering :( Wish us luck...

We are Deer Island bound later this evening...I get done work at 7pm, and we'll be heading over to the mainland then. I will be back again on Sunday....have a great weekend, everyone :) xox

the beginning of another week

Just got home from being up at the ball field with Lisa and a couple others, watching the boys play some softball. They all had their last final exam today, and school is almost officially out for the summer for them. They are all so excited. Lisa has one more year of highschool left then she is heading into Corner Brook to attend SWGC, and she will be staying in residence, too. So if it works out with my girls and the chalet, Lisa will just be a few steps away from us. I am so excited for her to come in :)

K's birthday get-together was actually ok. The supper at the takeout was nice, but the good is always so, sooo, delicious(!). We had a few games of pool, and before we new it, it was nearly time for when the others were invited to go to K's house. We all headed home to change (we were having a campfire out by her house) and bring along our drinks. I was going to bring my guitar, but wouldn't have been good because it was real foggy and damp outside. But that was alright.

Everyone who was coming arrived at aound 9pm. K put the laptop in the shed and had some music going. And finally it was getting dark and everyone was sitting close to the fire. We roasted weiners, took a nice few pictures, and had many laughs.

It continued to get wet so we picked everything up and we all headed into her house, which was awesome. We could sit around without wearing a heavy sweater or any footwear! Ah, relaxing! First off, we sat around in the kitchen eating the delicious food that K's mom set out for us. Chips, dips, brownies (the best part!), nachos...everything there was perfect. We then decided to play a drinking game, which was fun and hilarious at times. But certain people really drive me crazy when they think they are more experienced than you at certain things and then try to poke & laugh about it in your face, "just because". I won't get into that, but if I was having a party and got to pick who was coming, I'd certainly change up a few of those that were there! Sooooome people... *rolls eyes*

All in all, though, it was ok. I enjoyed myself, so that was the main thing of course. :) I'm still surprised that she had invited me. I mean, if she was me when we were back in residence/university, she wouldn't have appreciated the way she was treating me either. But whatever. Thing is, we didn't even speak hardly anything to each other up until now when she invited to her shindig. Then she messaged me the day before her party saying "Since when did I say we were not friends?? people have been constantly asking me 'heather and you are friends again?'..." I said well that's obviously because we haven't been out around with each other or anything, we hardly spoke to one another! I don't know what she was trying to tell me, but even I don't consider us friends anymore. And I don't know what message she was trying to bring across to me then, but I couldn't really care. Throughout the years there was so so soo many things that could have broke off our friendship. I am surprised it lasted up until this year. But whatever!!

Tomorrow, Me and Dad are going to head to the bay (White Bear Bay; it's across to the mainland from this island. People have cabins there.). Our friends Wilf & Eunice are heading up there with their visiting sons and families, but since there are so many of them along with the kids, me and Dad are also going to head out in our boat and help them get up there all at once! It is going to be so fun, I absolutely love it out in the boat, it's amazing. I will definitely be taking photos, possibly videos, too. Hopefully it will be a nice day to get some nice shots!

Tonight for supper; salmon and mashed potato! I am not a lover of fish (Wierd, you'd think anyone from NFLD would loveee fish, lol), but I do like salmon. It's not so "boring" as cod or halibut!

Sayalonga(Málaga)

Un juzgado de Torrox ha citado como imputado al alcalde de Sayalonga, el socialista José Luis Navas, para declarar en un procedimiento judicial abierto por presuntas irregularidades urbanísticas relacionadas con la construcción de cuatro viviendas en suelo agrícola. En concreto, al regidor se le imputan presuntos delitos contra la ordenación del territorio, prevaricación y cohecho.

Navas, sin embargo, ha asegurado que las cuatro viviendas agrícolas cuentan con todos los permisos y licencias municipales, por lo que dice estar seguro de la legalidad de su actuación como alcalde.

Asimismo, el mandatario se ha mostrado convencido del sobreseimiento y archivo del caso una vez que el juzgado que ha abierto las diligencias conozca y analice toda la documentación.

El procedimiento judicial se inicia a raíz de una denuncia realizada ante la Fiscalía por el Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza (Seprona) de la Guardia Civil por la construcción de cuatro viviendas en suelo rústico, concretamente en la zona conocida como Bajatillo, según ha declarado el alcalde.

Denuncia

Las presuntas irregularidades urbanísticas por las que el juzgado torroxeño ha citado a declarar a Navas fueron detectadas a raíz de una inspección rutinaria de los agentes del Seprona, aunque el alcalde dice estar convencido de que detrás se esconde la denuncia de un particular. «Son cuatro viviendas agrícolas que cuentan con su preceptivo proyecto de actuación», según el regidor. El proyecto de actuación es exigido para justificar el uso agrario de la parcela en la que se quiere edificar. «Estamos hablando de casas que están construidas desde hace entre tres y un año en parcelas que superan los 5.000 metros cuadrados y que toda la vida se han dedicado al cultivo del níspero y el olivo», ha asegurado Navas.

El alcalde ha anunciado su intención de iniciar acciones legales una vez que se archive la causa para restituir su imagen. «No se puede acusar gratuitamente a nadie de esta manera, porque no hay ningún indicio de delito», ha asegurado Navas.

El de Sayalonga no es el único alcalde de la comarca que está procesado por un presunto delito urbanístico. Recientemente, la Fiscalía de Málaga ha solicitado un año y medio de prisión y 17 años de inhabilitación especial para cargo público para el alcalde socialista de La Viñuela, Juan Millán, por conceder presuntamente tres licencias de obras para viviendas unifamiliares en suelo calificado como no urbanizable y sin realizar los trámites necesarios en los expedientes.

Otros casos

También la Fiscalía ha denunciado al alcalde de Alcaucín, José Manuel Martín (PSOE), por conceder presuntamente licencias de reforma cuando en realidad se trataba de nuevas construcciones en suelo no urbanizable. El pasado mes de marzo, el ex alcalde popular de Cómpeta, Leovigildo López, ya retirado de la vida pública, era condenado a siete años de inhabilitación para empleo y cargo público y a doce meses de multa por un delito de prevaricación urbanística, también relacionado con la construcción de una vivienda en suelo no urbanizable.

La ciudad de los jardines: LAKUA

Bajo este titulo inicio otra tirada de posts monotemáticos ( aparte de La Urbanización de los Delirios, De Turismo por y Me Encuentran Por) dedicados a la ciudad de Vitoria, más en concreto a sus distintos barrios. Es una forma de hacer otro guiño más hacia mi ciudad, la capital de Euskadi.

LAKUA:

Lakuas en realidad hay muchas. Es el nombre genérico de un gran distrito del norte de Vitoria que acoge a casi una quinta parte de toda la poblacion vitoriana y todavía está en crecimiento.

Por dividirlo a grandes rasgos tendríamos tres Lakuas principales: Lakua-Arriaga o Lakua 13, Sansomendi-Lakua 5 y Lakuabizkarra-Ibaiondo.

Mientras que Lakua 13 y Lakua 5 son barrios densos y con bloques más bien altos, en Lakuabizkarra son más los espacios abiertos y las zonas verdes e incluso hay chalets a la vera de la Avenida del Zadorra, siendo esa zona ya Ibaiondo( en euskera significa al lado del río)

Y para rematar las diferencias entre las Lakuas, están que Lakua 13 y Sansomendi son los más viejos mientras que toda Lakuabizkarra es de finales de los 90.

Y las curiosidades de Lakua van desde que en Lakua 13 los bloques hacen forma de cadeneta, hasta que en Lakuabizkarra haya una plaza porticada estilo plaza mayor o que sus calles sean tan rectas que todos los cruces tienen rotondas para evitar carreras ilegales de coches.

Aparte en Lakua estan el Gobierno Vasco, el parque más grande de dentro de Vitoria (amenazado ahora por la estación intermodal que el alcalde quiere levantar talando arboles de la pobre zona verde), el Centro Comercial Lakua (su nombre real es Lakua Centro, pero nadie le llama así, sino que simplemente es Centro Comercial Lakua por estar en lakuabizkarra), el tranvía, que ya está entrando por Lakua-Arriaga con las obras para instalarlo, y el futuro y polémico auditorio justo en frente del edificio del Gobierno Vasco.

De buses, tenemos la linea 12(Pilar-Lakua) hasta no hace mucho la linea más usada de Vitoria, las lineas 16-17(Periférica, cada sentido de la linea lleva un número distinto pero el recorrido es el mismo) la linea ahora más usada, la 13(Txagorritxu o Calle Iruña, tiene los dos nombres), y la 14, de la calle donosti, aquí preguntas por la calle San Sebastián y nadie sabe donde está, hay que hacerlo preguntando por Calle Donosti.

La verdad que es uno de los grandes proyectos urbanísticos de los últimos años en Vitoria junto a Salburua y Zabalgana.

Golpe al urbanismo salvaje

El Tribunal Supremo ha dado un duro varapalo a la promoción de viviendas sin control al prohibir que se construya en las zonas protegidas del Parque Natural del Cabo de Gata, en la provincia de Almería, y al anteponer además las Declaraciones de Impacto Ambiental (DIA) por encima de los planes municipales de urbanismo, que según manifiesta, deberán estar sujetos siempre a la aprobación de las primeras.

el constructor Federico Echevarría quería construir una gran urbanización, de 48 hectáreas, en el paraje de Agua Amarga, una zona declarada Hábitat Prioritario y Exclusivo por la Unión Europea y catalogado en 1997 por la Unesco como Reserva de la Biosfera. Aunque la Junta de Andalucía había paralizado sus planes, el Tribunal Superior de Justicia de esta comunidad autónoma dio la razón en 2003 al entonces alcalde de Níjar, el socialista Joaquín García Fernández, en cuyo término se encuentra el parque, y que había presentado un recurso.

Pero la batalla no termino ahí. La Junta de Andalucía recurrió al Supremo y éste ha sido ahora contundente. La sentencia prohíbe de forma expresa edificar no sólo en Agua Amarga, sino también en otras zonas donde había proyectos similares como San José, Pozo de los Frailes y Hortichuelas. El Tribunal tan sólo autoriza las edificaciones en zonas urbanizables y que no tienen en ningún caso un efecto perjudicial sobre el medio ambiente.

La urbanización en Agua Amarga hubiera supuesto la construcción de 350 viviendas y un hotel de cuatro estrellas con más de 300 habitaciones en una pedanía de Níjar que tiene apenas 200 habitantes, por lo que hubiera triplicado la población. Y eso que Echevarría calificaba su proyecto como "una urbanización ecológica y respetuosa con el entorno".

Aunque en el caso de Cabo de Gata el fallo del Tribunal Supremo da la razón a la Junta de Andalucía, supone también paradójicamente un golpe para los planes del presidente andaluz, Manuel Chaves , que ha cambiado el Plan de Ordenación del Territorio de Andalucía (POTA), aprobado el año pasado, para permitir que los municipios de menos de 10.000 habitantes puedan crecer sin freno.

Our Side of Beccar

Monday,March 10, 2008: Beccar is now to be found on most Internet search engines. It is true--parts of Beccar have huge Swiss-style chalets with swimming pools and large gardens. Those chalets are for the most part behind Beccar's train station. When I lived there with my Tia, our block was on the lower middle class side. Our door was painted white and we had to walk up at least 20 steps to get to the living room area. I remember that it was a nice, bright house-style apt. The two bedrooms were large, the kitchen was cozy, with a door opening onto the patio. We had a lot of good talks in the kitchen.The patio was our second favorite place, especially in the late spring and summer months. It was covered with a large green and white awning.There was a round table and 4 chairs with cushions. And my aunt's pots and plants. All her geraniums, begonias and roses kept us company as we talked and/or drank mate in the afternoon.
Now our side of Beccar has several remodeled homes, chalets and other houses have been given a new roof, new garden, more modern looks. It's great to walk by them and admire how they've changed.
Our small place is almost the way it was before. Even the large tree outside our living room window is still as bushy as ever.

Bodegas, Vino y Campos de Golf

La Rioja Alavesa, cuna de los afamados vinos, se está viendo salpicada por casos de corrupción relacionados con campos de golf y chalés, en una zona en la que el agua no sobra. Y todo debido al auge económico de la comarca gracias al turismo de vinos y bodegas de autor, como Ysios de Calatrava, Marques de Riscal de Gehry en Elciego y un largo etcétera

En Labastida, PNV y PP promueven el campo de golf con más de 700 viviendas asociadas, chocando de frente con el alcalde de Ezker Batua(La marca de IU en el País Vasco) que se opone y cree que estos dos partidos quieren imponerle el proyecto a la fuerza.

En Laguardia, también otro campo de golf es el causante de la polémica, y es que han detenido y encarcelado a una persona acusada de querer sobornar al edil de EA en la capital riojanoalavesa, para aprobar el plan del campo de golf. La situación viene motivada puesto que en Laguardia, 4 concejales son para PNV, los otros 4 para PP y uno para EA, quien decanta la balanza a favor de uno u otro partido. En la actualidad gobierna el PNV gracias al apoyo de EA en las pasadas elecciones.

Esta persona pretendía comprar el voto del concejal nacionalista a cambio de una "sustanciosa" suma de dinero, según informó Interior. Al parecer, le llegó a ofrecer 90.000 euros si apoyaba un cambio en las normas subsidiarias que permita triplicar el número de viviendas previstas en el complejo de golf de Laguardia. López Gonzalo(el concejal de EA) no se prestó y denunció el caso.

A este caso hay que añadirle que tanto el Departamento de Medio Ambiente del Gobierno Vasco como la Diputación Alavesa no ven muy claro que se construya este campo de golf.

Totana 2

Es una explicación algo más concreta de lo que comentaba el otro día sobre la corrupción en esta localidad murciana.

"Como en un guión de cine: el alcalde, José Martínez Andreo; la secretaria municipal; el jefe de la policía local; el ex regidor del Consistorio y ahora parlamentario autonómico del PP, Juan Morales; su ex mujer, propietaria de una agencia inmobiliaria en la localidad, y la actual compañera sentimental de Morales, que reside en Murcia capital. Todos imputados por su presunta relación con una nueva trama de corrupción urbanística.

Los seis detenidos que han pasado hoy a primera hora a disposición judicial fueron detenidos el lunes en el marco de la operación bautizada como "Tótem" contra una supuesta trama de corrupción urbanística en la localidad murciana de Totana. Según fuentes del Tribunal Superior de Justicia de Murcia, la jueza titular del Juzgado de Instrucción número 1, María Asunción Navarro, comenzó esta mañana a tomar declaración a cada uno de los detenidos en Totana, Murcia, Madrid y Galicia, después de que se hayan cumplido las 72 horas de detención preventiva que determina la ley.

La operación policial se efectuó el lunes de forma simultánea en las tres provincias, y tiene su origen en una supuesta corrupción urbanística para recalificar unos terrenos rústicos de 2,2 millones de metros en las afueras de la localidad, donde el grupo gallego Nuaria promovía la construcción de cerca de 5.000 viviendas que habrían duplicado la población del municipio, ahora con 25.000 habitantes censados, además de un campo de golf y dos hoteles con 'spa'. Los seis primeros detenidos en la operación están acusados de pago de comisiones ilegales y millonarias durante la pasada legislatura.

En el marco de las diligencias que se tramitan en el mismo juzgado por el proyecto de urbanización de La Zerrichera, a mediados de diciembre declararán varios testigos, la mayoría funcionarios de la Comunidad Autónoma, que en algún momento tuvieron alguna participación en la tramitación de este proyecto de urbanización, que incluía la construcción de más de 4.000 viviendas en esta zona de protección medioambiental."

we didn't go on many holidays when i was a child, as my dad was a miserable git. we did go to the same resort in majorca several times and also to butlins, both bognor and minehead.

although the idea of staying in a holiday camp now seems faintly ridiculous and very restrictive, at the age of ten, it means you can roam unhindered. i'm sure it woldn't be safe enough now but back in the 80s we had a different type of freedom and it meant a lot to escape your mum's constant sunscreen application and flicking bits of fluff off you at every opportunity.

so, you went on holiday with your parents, found some friends near your age on the first day and off you went.

around the times we visited, the camps were being updated, which i can see now, lost the point. they were cheesy, retro and stuck in the 60s, which is why people wanted to go. still, i loved the sunsplash pools with flume rides and wave machines, which have no doubt been replaced by something else now. but, the old swimming pools with the windows were far more interesting.

these holidays were the only times i can remember me and my mum dancing out together in public. we danced a lot at home, but whenever I hear these tunes from the summer of 86 I think of her dancing happily.

Suisse, Aminona: le méga-projet immobilier présenté

Le groupe russe Mirax a présenté à la presse mardi à Mollens (VS) son projet de complexe touristique prévu à Aminona, près de Crans-Montana, une station qui aspire à se développer depuis trente ans.

Le complexe vise une clientèle internationale, prioritairement russe, familiale et fortunée. Il se compose de tours avec 220 appartements luxueux, d'un hôtel de 500 chambres environ et de 35 à 45 chalets, sans compter des restaurants, une patinoire ouverte en toute saison, une piscine, des spas ou encore une galerie commerciale. "Nous apporterons quelque 1600 lits supplémentaires à l'offre touristique", a indiqué le chef de projet Vladimir Marakutsa, dont les propos en russe ont été traduits simultanément par un traducteur professionnel. La société Mirax investira dans le projet un montant revu à la hausse, soit 350 à 400 millions de francs.Pour Stéphane Pont, président de la commune de Mollens sur laquelle se trouve Aminona, le projet de Mirax apporte à la station "le développement socio-économique attendu depuis plus de trente ans". A l'époque, un projet de vingt-quatre tours avait avorté après la construction de seulement trois d'entre elles. Le président a rappelé aussi que la concession pour la télécabine de la station arrive à échéance en 2012 et que, étant donné la vétusté de l'installation, elle ne sera pas reconduite, à moins que le projet Mirax soit réalisé. "Sans télécabine, c'est la mort annoncée de la station."

"S'il paraît impressionnant, le projet du groupe Mirax respecte la législation communale en matière d'aménagement du territoire", a rassuré Stéphane Pont. "Il s'intègre dans la zone à bâtir existante; il n'y a donc pas de modification de plan de zone et encore moins d'augmentation de la zone à bâtir." La commune n'est propriétaire d'aucun terrain. Les 90'000 mètres carrés à bâtir dévolus au projet sont en main de seulement trois propriétaires.

Si le groupe Mirax choisit de vendre des objets aux étrangers, ce qui n'est pas encore certain, le projet sera soumis à la Lex Koller. Le groupe indique qu'il se contentera alors du contingent octroyé par le canton en la matière et qu'il concentrera le reste de ses activités sur l'hôtellerie et le commercial.

Dodging danger in Malaysian rainforest and countryside

BEFORE YOU TROT into the countryside or jungle, any self respecting guide will usually give you a pep talk about lurking danger. The jungle is not all about fascinating "oohs" and "ahhs" here and there. Mind you, it can turn "yeowww" pretty quicky with the wrong moves and lack of knowledge.

In case if you end up with a bad guide - or worst, one who doesn't speak English - let us help steepen your learning curve ....

Toman Fish

We never step into any countryside lakes or ponds without first consulting the locals. We have scour the wetlands long enough to understand that the Giant Snakehead (Channa micropeltes) threat - sometimes known as Snakehead Murrel or Toman - is not to be taken lightly. It has a gregarious appetite and can pack a painful bite with its razor sharp teeth. It is known to snap up small monkeys, cats, ducks and would not hesitate to gnaw your legs if you wade in its hunting ground.

Toman is one mean looking fish. It looks like Frankenfish experiment gone wrong. Toman can grow up to 1.5m weighing in excess of 20kg. Tales of giant Tomans wounding anglers and swimmers are common.

Snakeheads are Old World fishes belonging to the order Perciformes, family Channidae. They have protruding lower jaws, long narrow torpedo-shaped bodies that taper in depth toward the tail, long dorsal and anal fins without spines, and long toothed mouths. It is a voracious top-level predator, meaning that it has no natural enemy. With air- breathing ability (it can survive up to 4 days without water), the Toman can waddle to other ponds with its powerful side fins for new hunting spots and propagation.

Don't let calm water fool you. Tomans strive on stealth and wetland slewed with lotus and semi-aquatic plants are perfect stake-out spots.

It is so dangerous that California and other fourteen states in the US prohibit snakeheads as pets in 2002 after some were found in a pond in Crofton, Maryland, about 20 miles north east of Washington, D.C. It was believed that they were imported as pets and later ditched into the pond when they grew too big for their aquariums.

Snakes

Now, don't get us wrong. One rarely stumble into a snake while trekking. Like we mentioned before, 90% of rainforest wildlife is nocturnal, snakes included, and most will be quietly tucked in nooks and hidden corners to sleep during day time. However, there is a small chance one will cross path with one (insomnia?) if you go off-the-beaten-path often enough.

It is impossible to learn and identify all types of snakes in the rainforest - there're just too many. So, let's treat all as poisonous and try not to get friendly with them. Yes, we know there're people who travel to "interact" and get up close with wildlife. You can "interact" with fishes, lizards and butterflies but never snakes.

Look out for this one - 99% of rainforest snakes scoot off upon being approach by trekkers, but NOT this one. We crossed path with this beauty, a highly poisonous Wagler's Pit-Viper, Trimeresurus wagleri, in Gunung Chante. This specy has an unusual habit of remaining motionless for a long period of time and post danger to trekkers brushing by unknowingly. Knotting its tail on branches to prevent from falling off, the Wagler's Pit-Viper hunts with a lie-and-wait approach.

To stay away from snakes, one has to think like a snake. Here're the facts : you're cold-blooded, need daytime sleep and can only swallow prey the size of your mouth.

Well, first of all, you would naturally want to stay clear from peopled places for undisturbed sleep, right? Secondly, why hunt and waste precious poison on humans? No snakes, except pythons (that's another story), can swallow a 60kg trekker. Snakes would rather tag small mammals or other bite-size meal. Also, after a long cold night and being cold-blooded, you'll want some warming up in the morning before you go to sleep again. And so, you actively seek out sunny spots to bask. Simply put, stumbling on frisky snakes are more likely to happen in early morning. If you ask us, the best time for jungle treks is between 10am - 7pm.

Lastly, human footsteps sound like earthquakes to snakes on the forest floor. Most snakes won't want to hang around to see who's coming and would've scooted off 20 paces away. So, take heart. Snakes want to stay out of the way as much as we do.

So, to avoid snakes, the mantra should be .....

- Try to do all trekking in day time.
- Make lots of footstep noises when trekking.
- Don't run. Walk slowing. Give these critters time to back off.
- Look carefully before you grab on any branch for balance on rutted path.
- Avid photographers have a bad habit of veering off from the trekking group abruptly when spotting a good subject. Go slow and tell your guide of your intentions. Don't be too engrossed with angles and getting good shots.

From far, pink dollups of flowers make the scrub look attractive. But go close enough and you'll discover its replusive nature. It is not the plant to accidently fall into.

Jelatang a.k.a Malaysian poison ivy

IF THERE are any plants you should be aware of in the rainforest, the jelatang should top your list. Because a slight brush with its ordinary looking leaves will give you an extraordinary itch and burning sensation for the next few days.

Even the fiercest tigers and biggest elephants are known to scoot off at the sight of jelatang. On contact, one's skin will experience a hellish burning sensation that will last for 3-4 days. Washing with water or lotion application won't help. Nothing can curb it.

Looking out for jelatang is already hard during day time as they are usually tucked among other plants but at night, it becomes impossible. After dark, it's best to put on a long-sleeved shirt and long pants before going into the jungle. You'll never know where they lurk. A gentle wipe on the face is all that's needed to spoil your holiday. That's why, hiring a good Orang Asli guide who knows local floral and fauna is money well spent. Read jungle guide.

The funny thing about jelatang is, if one touches it with the palm of the hand, it's OK. Anywhere else is a no-no. Botanists have no explanation for this.

Kerengga ants

We can handle the nastiest wildlife but when we see kerengga coming - we duck.

These blood-red critters pack a nasty bite and it is the Malaysian version of fire ants. Unlike most ants that inject venom via their mandibles, the kerengga first bites the skin to open up a wound. Then it spits venom onto the exposed flesh. That's a lot of work, but with thousands of them swarming all over you, starting a "fire" on your skin is just a matter of time.

Its scientific name is Ocoephylla smaradgina. Some people call it the "weaver" ant because the ant weaves a nest from leafs to house the colony. Some trees in the mangrove forest emit nectar from tree trunks to entice kerengga colony to make nest on the spot. This symbiosis protects tree leafs from being nibble by herbivours.

These ants can be found everywhere in Malaysia, especially on trees laden with ripe fruits. Like most ants, they work in numbers. If you see one, you can be sure thousands are somewhere lurking. So, back off.
