Buddy Guy’s new album “Skin Deep” was released this past Tuesday and the 30 second samples on I-Tunes sound great. This is his first recorded album with all original tunes. He gets help from Susan Tedeschi on “Too Many Tears.” Also contributing to the album are Eric Clapton, Robert Randolph and Derek Trucks. If you have never seen Guy in concert, you are so missing out.

One Day as a Lion, the new band with Zach De La Rocha and Jon Theodore (drummer from Mars Volta) put out an EP of 4 songs. If you were a fan of Rage, you will definitely enjoy it. “Wild International” sounds great.

Rush has released a never heard before version of “Working Man” due to popular demand as a result of the song being released on the “Rock Band” video game a few weeks back. Check out this video on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QAKhEzdSYPI

The Rolling Stones are suing rapper Lil Wayne for his song “Playing with Fire.” The Stones reps say it’s a clear derivative of their song with the same title and he used it without their permission.

Have you ever been put on the spot to name your top 25 music acts of all-time? Well my oldest son put me on notice that he wanted my favorites, with an accompanying song and a reason why I liked them? I was resistant because I felt that I would leave an artist off of my list. However, he keenly pointed out that if they did not quickly come to mind, how could they be in my top 25? (Putting them in order does take some thinking and time but again the first 25 that come to mind) So here goes: (you too can play along at home):

The Omaha metro has become a great place for large acts of all types to perform. Music fans of all ages can find something they like at an arena-style venue with huge production value. For the kiddies, the Jonas Brothers (yesterday at the Qwest Center); their parents, Dave Matthews Band (tonight at the Qwest Center); and their parents, Journey, Cheap Trick, and Heart (tonight at the Mid-America Center). The 40 and 50 somethings are actually being targeted very hard these weeks with Tom Petty and Lyle Lovett recently rockin out old school. Omaha fans of ALL ages went to those shows.

Because of a recent storm you may all remember, the Willie Nelson concert had to be moved and I know plenty of twenty-somethings that were very relieved he was able to reschedule. The point of my rambling? - Omaha not only pulls in great acts, they receive them very well. That reception by people of all ages is an integral part in getting these greats to return. Also, I wanted to approach this subject in case the readers were wondering if I was only into local indie music. I like it all. If I was a musician, packing arenas and selling two million albums would be great. I don't discriminate based on the money a musician makes or does not make, unlike so many music snobs. If it's good music, it's good music. Even some of the guys and gals playing on the street in the old market have talent. That just shows how many places there are to find awesomeness in our fine city.

So, for the classic rockers and classic country lovers, there are a few more really big shows coming to the Qwest Center and Mid America Center. Let me know how those go. As far as the local stuff, every night of the week has something in store. Seek and you will find!

The party was admittedly thrown in poor taste. My roommate and I had stocked the fridge with rows of two buck chuck, a few plastic jugs of vodka, a bottle of rum, and an old Dewar's I knew no one would touch. No one under the age of 35 touches Dewar's except me. The music looped over itself and maybe, just maybe, there was some Cheap Trick.

I remember things. I do.

I remember the spilled drinks, the dog running under my bed and mauling his small body into a pillow. I recall the two-hour porno that happened to come on around 2am, the boy in the plaid shirt lunging towards my roommate, the skunky smoke spilling out under the doors, the lines being carefully cut on glossy-covered cookbooks. I remember everyone leaving save one. I remember his crawl on my bed, his lips on my mouth, and the sloppy, lusty attack on my neck. I remember waking up next to a mistake; like when parents don't plan for a child, and they sickly call it a happy mistake.

And the black and blue on my neck? I woke up for a second time and threw myself into the bathtub. I laid out my limbs over the edge of the porcelain and let the water get muddy with soap. Everything was steaming. As the cloudy suds drained out all around me, I lolled my head around and heard a snap. I sprung up to the mirror and pressed my face up close. There was a hicky on my neck. There were fresh cuts on my skin. There was makeup caked under my eyes.

There are no happy mistakes. There are accidents, and there's beautiful luck. Everything in between is just fucking chance.

The "Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor" Edition

A beast of a week, but I'm starting to come around...Don't buy into the romantic idea that depression gives you some deep insight into life that happy people miss. You know what you gain from being depressed? Fucking nothing.

You know how I know you're gay? Because you're reading this.

Fuck this shit, let's just get to the songs...

"Stuck Between Stations" by The Hold Steady

Decent three-chord bar-band rawk with smarty-pants lyrics about suicidal poets and bad girlfriends. Not sure I like that piano player.

"Daddy Should Have Stayed In High School" by Cheap Trick

A dark and dirty song about a pedophile. Their first album is such a depraved and visceral piece of work that you have to wonder if the label execs even listened to it before releasing it. Great guitar sounds on this song, though.

"Alcoholiday" by Teenage Fanclub

Perhaps the worst Musical Guest ever in the history of Saturday Night Live. Boy, did they suck. Whatever, this song is great and they manage to throw a tautology into the chorus. Can't beat that, unless you can.

so i was thinking about this today while listening to various different songs from Journey…

so i was thinking about this today while listening to various different songs from Journey... i have actually seen Journey in all of its carnations except in the early days pre Steve perry.. but since that time i have had the pleasure of seeing the band with each front man...

first with Steve Perry - this band i had seen several times on tour supporting various albums ( yes i said albums) such as Infinity, Evolution, Departure, and so on... then in recent years since the "departure" of Steve Perry, there have now been 3 replacements including the most recent Arnel Pineda.

First there was Steve Augeri who did an amazing job although he was no Steve Perry... from a distance he even looked like Steve Perry with a perm.

Then there was Jeff Scott Soto who in my opinion had no business standing on stage with Neil and the boys attempting to impersonate Mr. Perry.. not even close.

And now we come to the Arnel Pineda era of Journey... now for those who are die-hard Fans of Steve Perry, you will find this gentleman the absolute closest thing to the original that could be found. Arnels pitch and tone are so close to Steve that the only way i know it is not Steve Perry is the influction and phrasing that mr. Pineda uses when he sings... now my only concern is how long on the tour before his voice starts showing signs of stress and he comes to a point where he needs a rest in order to maintain the strength in vocal quality he has shown to this point... only time will tell!

i am looking forward to the show here in our area at the Sleep train Amphitheater on September 16th 2008.

along with Journey that night is co headliners Heart, along with Cheap Trick...

wow what a lineup! should be a rocking night.......

I didn't love "Can't Stop This!" as much as "Black & Gold" until I discovered that there is a second part to this track. After an (unnecessary) 3 minute pause, around 8:12, Sam's delicious voice oozes through the speakers and sexes your ears. Oh my gawd, when I hear a clip like this, I remember why I love music so much. The lyrics are silly but that's not the point. It's just the combination of the raw texture of his voice and the bare piano playing. So skip to 8:12 and have a listen... and a second... and a third. It's soooo good.

I'm so sad he's gay because there goes any prospect of us together. Sigh.

"I listened to the clip and I'm still hungry..."

mp3: Can't Stop This! [Sam Sparro] - MUST DL!!

MV for "Black & Gold." There is nothing like a satin lapeled light-up tuxedo on a man. It's all sharp lines and pure sexiness.

That's not Chris Brown!

"Don't Stop The Music" was my favorite song on Rihanna's "Good Girl Gone Bad." Yes, "Umbrella" is catchy and fun but there is something mesmerizing about the beat in DSTM. Here's an unusual remix of it to revive your love of this over-played song. Still good!

Most of the fun of GT's music is recognizing songs. Not my favorite track off the new album "Feed the Animals" (I like "Play your part Pt 2" best) but it goes with my mood today.

Other items:

John Mayer has released “Where the Light Is- Live in Los Angeles.” This guy is growing on me. Great guitar player and nice vocals. He does a real cool version of Tom Petty’s “Free Falling.” Check it out. Supposedly Target is the place to buy it. You get both CD and DVD for $17.99.

My new favorite song of the week is from a Country Band called The Lost Trailers and the song is “Holler Back.” These guys have been around for a long time, they sound good- check them out.

My two favorite “old school” songs this week are “Mr. BoJangles” by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band “On and On” by Stephen Bishop. The Nitty Gritty Band re-recorded this hit with Keith Urban and Dierks Bentley but I like the original better. Jerry Jeff Walker actually wrote the song but I like this version the best- it’s been covered by many artists, including John Denver and Bob Dylan.

LL Cool J has released a new single called “Baby” featuring The Game. Very disappointed in LL, this song is juvenile and a big step backwards at this point in his career. I don’t know if he’s trying to get “street cred” but the cursing and the lyrics are laughable.

Fans of Little Feat, myself included, will be glad to know that 14 of their greatest hits have been re-recorded by various artists which include Dave Matthews, Chris Robinson, Jimmy Buffet, Vince Gil, Brooks & Dunn and Bob Seger.

Caught some needling on why no review of Motley Crue’s new release “Saints of Los Angeles.” I’m almost there. I don’t want to piece-meal it from I-Tunes and then realize I want the whole CD. The first five songs sound awesome. I’m a huge Crue fan so I most likely will take the plunge. And I totally agree that the video for “Saints of Los Angeles” is real cool, this is the way a rock band is suppose to look and sound like. Excellent song and video.

I have now solidified my favorite track on “Evil Urges” by My Morning Jacket and the honor goes to the “Librarian.” This song is phenomenal. Again, I can’t say enough about this album but if there is one song to get- this is the one. On another note about this album- you had to see the faces of my boys when I played “Highly Suspicious” for them. Talk about priceless. They hated it.

And not for nothing I am real close to getting “Real Animal” by Alejandro Escovedo that was just released this past Tuesday. Last week I mentioned his new single “Always a Friend” and as I listen to the 30-second previews on I-Tunes- it sounds like a smash hit!!

This week’s I-Tunes shuffle landed on “You May Be Right” by Billy Joel, so of course I had to go back and listen to my one and only album by Mr. Joel- “Glass Houses.” This was his seventh studio effort, which was released back in 1980. I know this album alienated fans from his first six albums but you know what? - it dragged me in. Now for myself back in 1980, it was not cool to own a Billy Joel album, so the people who knew me back then- probably never knew that I bought this. (I had a metal image to uphold). Now I recognize Mr. Joel’s space in American music history and he can’t be denied, but I was never a real “big” fan. I like a lot of his stuff but again this is the only album that I have ever purchased from his extensive library. And yes I have seen him live and have to admit I liked the show. He has earned his place in music history.

Now for me, the opening breaking glass sound on “You May Be Right” symbolized that he was shattering his image of just being a piano man and was ready to rock and roll. Say what you will about this song but when it’s cranked up loud (as I have it now) this is a fun rock and roll song. “Sometimes A Fantasy” is a cool song and I love the hook. With a good set of headphones, the background vocals come through great. I love the drum parts to “only you can give me satisfaction.” Again play this loud. “Don’t Ask Me Why”- well don’t ask me why but I love this song- I know its soft but there is a soft side to me. “Don’t wait for answers, just take your chances.” Sort of reminds me of something Paul McCartney would sing. OK now I know you have heard “It’s Still Rock and Roll To Me” over a thousand times, especially in the summer of 1980 but you know what? It’s a great song.

Tell me you don’t like “All for Leyna?” Oh man I wore this album out and this is my second favorite track. I love the piano work and the bridge of the song that takes it into “I’m failing in school, losing my friends…” is something that I can listen to over and over. If you have the album- side 2: track # 1: “I Don’t Want To Be Alone” is not only my favorite song on this album, this could very well rank up there in my top 20 songs of all time. Can you say “desert island” song? I have always wanted to perform this song a la karaoke style. How cool is this song? “She said she meet me in a bar at the Plaza Hotel, wear a jacket and a tie-eee-eye..” It has a funky stop and go beat that flows real well and Billy’s vocals are spot on. Perfect bar song. Then for all sports fans, “Sleeping With the Television On” starts with the National Anthem and then back in the old days the TV would turn off and you’d hear just a steady noise. “Your Eyes are Saying Talk to Me… This isn’t for me to say Dianne… All Night Long..” I believe this is one of his all time classic songs, I know a lot of folks out there probably think I’m sleeping with the television on right now. And how cool and rocking is “Close to the Borderline” – I love it- crank it up. How many songs by Billy Joel can you say “Crank it Up?” I love the guitar throughout. “A buck three eighty won’t buy you much these days… I don’t change channels, so they must change me..” How many Billy Joel songs can you “air guitar” to? Come on, this is probably the only one. The album closes with “Through The Long Night,” a great slow song and Joel’s vocals are top notch. It’s a sing along song for the whole family- take it on your next trip together.

Glass Houses spawned two number 1 hits for Mr. Joel: “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me” and “Don’t Ask Me Why.” “You May Be Right” peaked at # 7. Now there is not one bad tune on this album and it classifies as a “desert island” disc. It’s short and compact- like many albums were back in the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s. At the time I bought it, I knew it was a classic but again wasn’t too vocal about it. But now I will tell all of you- run out and get this album now!!! And he also won a Grammy for this album “Best Male Rock Vocal Performance”- would I steer you wrong?

Remember the VH1 Honors show this year is on Thurs. July 17 at 9:00 p.m. and the only band being honored is The Who. Should be a great show.

Back on this day in 1971, Jim Morrison died of a heart attack in France at the young age of 27.

Today would have been Laura Branigan’s 51st birthday, she passed away in Aug. 2004. She was born in Brewster NY.

Back on this day in 1988, Cheap Trick had its only #1 song with “The Flame.”

Apparently the stories are based on the songstress’s tunes and features artwork from fairly well known artists: Pia Guerra (Y the Last Man), Mike Dringenberg (Sandman), and David Mack (Daredevil, Kabuki) among others.
Anyone remember Mandy Kane? No? Let me refresh your memory.

He is essentially Australia’s low rent version of Marilyn Manson. So much so that he actually opened for the shock rocker on MM’s 2003 Aus tour.

His career highlight thus far is probably his cover of Duran Duran’s ‘Ordinary World’ on the One Perfect Day soundtrack.

Well, long story short, Mr Kane has a new album out, ‘Far From Oblivion.’
Ironically, as far as the Australian music scene is concerned, Mandy Kane is exactly dead smack in the middle of oblivion.

In keeping with my tradition of random ramblings.. I have decided that I am going to try a different theme each Monday. I get bored really easily so it may not continue for long...Although, Tuesdays have turned into Teasedays.. with my erotic fantasy writings and I don't see myself getting bored with that anytime soon! So, we'll see how it goes.

Ok, to start things off, I am going to take a little stroll down memory lane... I was an 80's girl (yes, I'm old) and I have been listening to some of my old stuff lately... So, it's going to be all about the 80's for a while.. Starting with some of my favorite music and videos from that time. I used to spend endless hours watching MTV, staying up all night just waiting for my favorite video of the moment to come on. Those were the days when MTV actually showed music videos, in fact, I remember watching the launch of MTV and the very first video "Video Killed The Radio Star" I just love how cheesy and literal the videos were back then! Ahh memories....

I have very eclectic taste in music.. so this is going to be a hodgepodge!

I have to start with two from my absolute favorite 80's band and my first true love *sigh* It was very difficult for me to choose only two!

Adam and the Ants "Dog Eat Dog" (The was my introduction song to the Ants and it was love at first sound.. then I saw Adam and I was hopelessly hooked! Oh come on, I was 11!)

Adam Ant "Desperate But Not Serious" (I remember the first time I saw this video, I could not stop staring at the tv... I felt many things awaken in me that day!)

Madonna "Lucky Star" (I adored her!)

The Waitresses "I Know What Boys Like" (Wow! This one is really annoying! But, I used to love it!)

This blog is intended to do nothing more than discuss the music that I feel passionately about. Music is one of the keys to a long and fruitful existence along with red wine and somebody to love. Contributions are welcomed.

This post details the latest in a series of discs I put together for my listening pleasure. They contain songs meant to make you move, or move you... or both if you're lucky. This one spans the years 1976-1983. I'll start with the tracklisting before moving on to some commentary on each song.

01. "Beat Surrender" - The Jam [1982]
02. "Heart Of The City" - Nick Lowe [1976]
03. "So Good To See You" - Cheap Trick [1977]
04. "Identity" - X-Ray Spex [1978]
05. "Homosapien" - Pete Shelley [1981]
06. "Away From Home" - Klark Kent [1980]
07. "Reel By Reel" - XTC [1979]
08. "The Walls Came Down" - The Call [1983]
09. "So Young" - Elvis Costello & The Attractions [rec. 1979, rel. 1987]
10. "Candy-O" - The Cars [1979]
11. "Walking Out On Love" - The Beat [1979]
12. "Ain't That Nothin'" (45 version) - Television [1978]
13. "Everywhere That I'm Not" - Translator [1982]
14. "In My Own Time" - The Three O'Clock [1983]
15. "Hold On To Something" - Great Buildings [1981]
16. "Tomorrow Night" - Shoes [1979]
17. "Girls Talk" - Dave Edmunds [1979]
18. "Tell That Girl To Shut Up" - Holly & The Italians [1980]
19. "Girl U Want" - Devo [1980]
20. "I Love A Man In A Uniform" - Gang Of Four [1982]
21. "New Feeling" - Talking Heads [1977]
22. "I Could Be Happy" - Altered Images [1981]
23. "Not So Much The Time" - The Records [1982]
24. "What Do All The People Know" - The Monroes [1982]
25. "On Your Radio" - Joe Jackson [1979]
-------------------------------------------------------
01. "Beat Surrender" - The Jam [1982]

Before Paul Weller left the band for Style Council and a still-running solo career, he gave us this last Jam single in late '82.

02. "Heart Of The City" - Nick Lowe [1976]

One side of the first single (paired with "So It Goes") on the venerable Stiff Records label.

03. "So Good To See You" - Cheap Trick [1977]

Their first 4 albums are full of power pop gems like this one from the second LP In Color.

04. "Identity" - X-Ray Spex [1978]

Dig that saxophone! One of a great run of singles from Poly Styrene and the gang; also on Germfree Adolescents.

05. "Homosapien" - Pete Shelley [1981]

The title track to Shelley's first solo album after The Buzzcocks' first breakup.

06. "Away From Home" - Klark Kent [1980]

Klark Kent was actually a pseudonym for Stewart Copeland, whose main gig at the time of this release was as the drummer for The Police. Try to imagine Sting committing something this frivolous and fun to wax. Never gonna happen.

07. "Reel By Reel" - XTC [1979]

From XTC's third album Drums And Wires, the first that succeeds from beginning to end. Andy Partridge really came into his own at this point, finally coming up with the melodies to match his witty and often insightful lyrics.

08. "The Walls Came Down" - The Call [1983]

From Modern Romans. I don't know what Michael Been is singing about here, but it sure sounds serious. Reagan's Cold War is as good a guess as any. Back then, I just liked the insistent guitar line.

09. "So Young" - Elvis Costello & The Attractions [rec. 1979, rel. 1987]

It is a shame that EC can't stand Bruce Thomas, because he will never have a bass player that good again. Even on a track like this that was recorded in '79 but not deemed worthy of release until 1987's Out Of Our Idiot odds-n-ends compilation. The bass is the lead instrument in the verses. Not too many outside of Entwistle could be that muscular and melodic at the same time.

10. "Candy-O" - The Cars [1979]

The Cars' second album, of which this is the title track, showcases the darker side of Ric Ocasek. The songs are of course still pure pop. The chorus on this particular tune is all paranoid longing with a Bo Diddley beat.

11. "Walking Out On Love" - The Beat [1979]

They get in and get out in under 2 minutes so you'll need to hit the "back" button a few times.

12. "Ain't That Nothin'" (45 version) - Television [1978]

Yes, Marquee Moon is way better than Adventure, the album that this song was drawn from. But this track, with its ringing guitars, could have held its own on the debut.

13. "Everywhere That I'm Not" - Translator [1982]

From Heartbeats And Triggers. You're everywhere that I'm not...it can seem like this when dealing with unrequited love.

14. "In My Own Time" - The Three O'Clock [1983]

They were lumped in with the Paisley Underground in early '80s Los Angeles, but there is nothing vaguely psychedelic about this one from The Three O'Clock. Rather than harkening back to Sgt. Pepper and his ilk, the band were more in tune with 1965-1966 pop sensibilities. This one from their first full length Sixteen Tambourines features lead singer Michael Quercio's impossibly high voice (the first time I heard their song "Jet Fighter" I was convinced the lead singer was female) and a honking saxophone.

15. "Hold On To Something" - Great Buildings [1981]

Where can I find more Great Buildings? This is sublime.

16. "Tomorrow Night" - Shoes [1979]

Zion, Illinois' very own Shoes!

17. "Girls Talk" - Dave Edmunds [1979]

On this track from his Repeat When Necessary LP, Edmunds polishes the rough edges from a song Costello ended up relegating to a B-side, but leaves the double meanings intact. "You may not be an old-fashioned girl but you're gonna get dated".

18. "Tell That Girl To Shut Up" - Holly & The Italians [1980]

Cat fight! It's inclusion here, though, is due entirely to the harmonies on the chorus...

19. "Girl U Want" - Devo [1980]

Those of you beaten into submission by countless airings of "Whip It" (no disrepect) will appreciate the squirrely beat and catchy guitar figure on this one from Freedom Of Choice. Strangely, Soundgarden covered this one.

20. "I Love A Man In A Uniform" - Gang Of Four [1982]

From Songs Of The Free. A rousing tongue-in-cheek song about those that lust for battle. A slew of these songs were released in this period (XTC's "Generals And Majors", Men At Work's "It's A Mistake", The Police's "Bombs Away" to name three), probably enough for a compilation all their own. It would be essential listening for those that think the eighties were just about cocaine and Rubik's Cubes. By the way, you should feel free to use Cocaine And Rubik's Cubes as an album title.

21. "New Feeling" - Talking Heads [1977]

David Byrne and company's first album, Talking Heads: 77, is so musically spacious. The room was needed to give Byrne's claustrophic lyrics free reign. As interesting as the band's later experiments with world rhythms would be, I think I come back to this album even more.

22. "I Could Be Happy" - Altered Images [1981]

I love Clare Grogan's vocal on this bittersweet ballad.

23. "Not So Much The Time" - The Records [1982]

Meanings misinterpreted. Easy enough to do in any relationship, but when long distances are involved, it's just that much harder. From Music On Both Sides.

24. "What Do All The People Know" - The Monroes [1982]

This is the only song I've heard from The Monroes, but it's just as catchy now as it was in '82.

25. "On Your Radio" - Joe Jackson [1979]

This track leads off Jackson's second album I'm The Man. An interesting riposte to everyone who's ever pissed him off - "you can only hope to hear me on your radio". We should all be so lucky.

Well, it's almost here folks: Milwaukee's Big Gig, Summerfest. Summerfest, deemed the World's Largest Musical Festival by the Guinness World Records in 1999, has been around since 1967, and this year marks the festival's 41st year.

The festival brings music, comedy, fireworks, kids' attractions and much more to Milwaukee's lakefront each and every year.

Summerfest showcases a myriad of types of bands ranging from classic rock to jazz to metal to country to alternative rock.

Previous years have brought bands like Death Cab For Cutie, Wilco, Violet Femmes, Silversun Pickups, Bob Dylan, Nine Inch Nails, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Rush, Ben Folds, Tool, Rusted Root, Steve Miller, Paul Simon, Journey, O.A.R., Nickelback, The Black Crowes, etc. (I could go on for ages about the number of bands that have played at the festival.)

This year's festival begins June 26th and ends July 6th, 2008. Tickets are $15 (quite an increase from just five years ago..) and they grant you admission to the festival and all stages except for the Marcus Ampitheater. (Marcus tickets are sold separately and are for the major headliners.)

Bands/musicians playing this year include Stevie Wonder, They Might Be Giants, Three Dog Night, Gnarls Barkley, Sevendust, Dashboard Confessional, Blondie, Old 97's, Jack's Mannequin, The Polyphonic Spree, Joe Cocker, Matisyahu, Rascal Flatts, Paramore, Sean Kingston, Filter, Pat Benatar, Alkaline Trio, John Mayer, Coheed and Cambria, Finger Eleven, Alicia Keys, Tim McGraw, Plain White T's, Gomez, Kansas, Stone Temple Piolets, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, 311, The Bravery, Earth Wind and Fire, and Jakob Dylan.

For the full Summerfest lineup (or at least what has been announced so far), visit the festival's website.

Personally, I feel like years past have been much better when it comes to the lineup. Where are all of the indie bands? Where are the bands like Wilco and Death Cab? I'm quite disappointed with this year's selection, except for bands like Old 97's and Jakob Dylan. (But that's just two bands out of hundreds that play each year.)

But, oh well, I guess. Summerfest is still always a great time, and I highly recommend it for anyone who hasn't been there before (unless of course you don't like large crowds, because millions of people attend Summerfest each year. So, agoraphobics, stay away!)

If anyone plans on attending or wants to discuss Summerfest as a whole, please comment below...

A bailar!!!

In one day, I will have a thirteen year old son. Whoa.

Thirteen was a big year for me, especially that summer. T'was a summer of spending a lot of time with my dad at his place in Memphis. For a boy from Gravel Ridge, summer there was paradise. Pops lived in a townhouse complex with a pool and an assortment of randy teenagers. I was the kid from out of town, but in a good way--novelty, fresh face, etc. One of my favorite summers ever. Endless days of straightup lounging, arguing about how to spell Def Leppard, stolen kisses in the deep end of the pool, and wondering if this was the summer it was finally going to happen (answer: no).

More importantly: it was the summer of my first real concert.

I'd been on my mom for years, asking if I could go to concerts that rolled into Barton Coliseum. Foreigner? No, you're too young. Loverboy! Forget it. Ozzy!! No, there's too much pot at those shows. Imagine my frustration when my neighbor--a year younger--won two tickets to see Rush and I was denied ("that's Devil Music--it stands for Roots Under Satan's house"). T'was a grim morning when I saw Chris Kenner wearing a Rush shirt the next day. It glowed in the dark, he said. Much like my fury the night before, lying in bed knowing that a sixth-grader was at Rush and I, a much more mature seventh-grader, was...not.

Mom's rules, apparently, did not apply when I was at Dad's. So when Dad asked if I wanted to go see CHEAP TRICK, I swam through the cartoon noises in my head (ahh-a-eee/ahh-a-eee/ahh-a-eee!!) and said YES! A concert! Sweeet! Who the hell is Cheap Trick? I don't know any of their songs! But it's a concert and I'm going! Right on!

After what seemed like a year (but was really only about a day), we were there! I remember it being an outdoor show, we were down near the front, and I was vibing hard on the energy of live music. Instantly addicted to what Jeff Bebe would call "the fucking buzz, man!" The details still stick with me: the smell of sweat and cotton candy, the extra heartbeat in my chest from the bass and drums, the sweet raw pain in my throat from yelling, me wondering why all the mohawked guys near us (actual mohawks! wait'll I tell the guys at school!) kept screaming "She's Tight!"

Wait! I do know some of their songs! "I Want You to Want Me," "Surrender," "The Dream Police"!!!! I didn't know that was Cheap Trick! Yeahhhh!!!

I remember thinking that Rick Nielsen must be the greatest guitarist EVER, especially when he brought out a double-necked twelve-string guitar painted up to look like him (the necks were legs, the body was, well, a body)).

To this day, CheckOneTwo has a soft spot for Cheap Trick and will always, always, always turn up their radio cuts and sing along. Thanks, Dad, for that show and for all the others we went to in Memphis (Adam Ant, Billy Idol, Springsteen...too many to count). My mommy's allright, but--in this way--my daddy's really allright, even though they both seem a little weird.

QUESTION: TELL ME SOME DETAILS ABOUT YOUR FIRST TIME?

And they had a fitful command of the deep and meaningful, making only occasional attempts at sociological commentary that had a satiric edge closer to the Coasters than to the Who or Pink Floyd. What they did have was command of the shallow and meaningless: cliched love songs, the grand gestures of arena rock, decent hooks and explosions of Dionysian ecstasy that left audiences happy, with little residue for analysis. Frontman Robin Zander had a fine voice in the John Lennon/Liam Gallagher tradition of screaming in tune. Guitarist-songwriter Rick Nielsen could be counted on for monster chord progressions. Bassist Tom Petersson and drummer Bun E. Carlos stayed locked, however thick or thin the gruel. "Surrender" and "Dream Police" will live on. The band's live stuff, which always had the most juice, is underrepresented in this two-CD collection, but "Gonna Raise Hell" is dynamite. Their cover of "Ain't That a Shame" will teach the joys of headbanging swing to future generations. (Why didn't they include their MTV hit "Don't Be Cruel" here?) Final judgment: Hard rock with a careerist pop sensibility and a few moments of genuine inspiration. You wonder what they could have done if they hadn't tried to repeat the success of "I Want You to Want Me." CHARLES M. YOUNG(RS 945, April 1, 2004)

Today's clip is courtesy of one of America's great rock and roll bands, Cheap Trick, performing one of my favorite tracks, Surrender, live at Budokan.

Cheap Trick formed in Rockford, Illinois. Their first three albums - Cheap Trick, In Color & Heaven Tonight - are considered Power pop classics. Their fourth album, a live album record in Japan at Budokan (Cheap Trick was huge in Japan, meeting with Beatlemania-like crowds upon arriving to play), was their breakthrough, becoming a hit not only in Japan but in America where it went triple-platinum. Their recordings after that, in the opinions of some, became inconsistent, but their live show was and continues to be fantastic.
