This post details the latest in a series of discs I put together for my listening pleasure. They contain songs meant to make you move, or move you... or both if you're lucky. This one spans the years 1976-1983. I'll start with the tracklisting before moving on to some commentary on each song.

Before Paul Weller left the band for Style Council and a still-running solo career, he gave us this last Jam single in late '82.

02. "Heart Of The City" - Nick Lowe [1976]

One side of the first single (paired with "So It Goes") on the venerable Stiff Records label.

03. "So Good To See You" - Cheap Trick [1977]

Their first 4 albums are full of power pop gems like this one from the second LP In Color.

04. "Identity" - X-Ray Spex [1978]

Dig that saxophone! One of a great run of singles from Poly Styrene and the gang; also on Germfree Adolescents.

05. "Homosapien" - Pete Shelley [1981]

The title track to Shelley's first solo album after The Buzzcocks' first breakup.

06. "Away From Home" - Klark Kent [1980]

Klark Kent was actually a pseudonym for Stewart Copeland, whose main gig at the time of this release was as the drummer for The Police. Try to imagine Sting committing something this frivolous and fun to wax. Never gonna happen.

07. "Reel By Reel" - XTC [1979]

From XTC's third album Drums And Wires, the first that succeeds from beginning to end. Andy Partridge really came into his own at this point, finally coming up with the melodies to match his witty and often insightful lyrics.

08. "The Walls Came Down" - The Call [1983]

From Modern Romans. I don't know what Michael Been is singing about here, but it sure sounds serious. Reagan's Cold War is as good a guess as any. Back then, I just liked the insistent guitar line.

09. "So Young" - Elvis Costello & The Attractions [rec. 1979, rel. 1987]

It is a shame that EC can't stand Bruce Thomas, because he will never have a bass player that good again. Even on a track like this that was recorded in '79 but not deemed worthy of release until 1987's Out Of Our Idiot odds-n-ends compilation. The bass is the lead instrument in the verses. Not too many outside of Entwistle could be that muscular and melodic at the same time.

10. "Candy-O" - The Cars [1979]

The Cars' second album, of which this is the title track, showcases the darker side of Ric Ocasek. The songs are of course still pure pop. The chorus on this particular tune is all paranoid longing with a Bo Diddley beat.

11. "Walking Out On Love" - The Beat [1979]

They get in and get out in under 2 minutes so you'll need to hit the "back" button a few times.

12. "Ain't That Nothin'" (45 version) - Television [1978]

Yes, Marquee Moon is way better than Adventure, the album that this song was drawn from. But this track, with its ringing guitars, could have held its own on the debut.

13. "Everywhere That I'm Not" - Translator [1982]

From Heartbeats And Triggers. You're everywhere that I'm not...it can seem like this when dealing with unrequited love.

14. "In My Own Time" - The Three O'Clock [1983]

They were lumped in with the Paisley Underground in early '80s Los Angeles, but there is nothing vaguely psychedelic about this one from The Three O'Clock. Rather than harkening back to Sgt. Pepper and his ilk, the band were more in tune with 1965-1966 pop sensibilities. This one from their first full length Sixteen Tambourines features lead singer Michael Quercio's impossibly high voice (the first time I heard their song "Jet Fighter" I was convinced the lead singer was female) and a honking saxophone.

15. "Hold On To Something" - Great Buildings [1981]

Where can I find more Great Buildings? This is sublime.

16. "Tomorrow Night" - Shoes [1979]

Zion, Illinois' very own Shoes!

17. "Girls Talk" - Dave Edmunds [1979]

On this track from his Repeat When Necessary LP, Edmunds polishes the rough edges from a song Costello ended up relegating to a B-side, but leaves the double meanings intact. "You may not be an old-fashioned girl but you're gonna get dated".

18. "Tell That Girl To Shut Up" - Holly & The Italians [1980]

Cat fight! It's inclusion here, though, is due entirely to the harmonies on the chorus...

19. "Girl U Want" - Devo [1980]

Those of you beaten into submission by countless airings of "Whip It" (no disrepect) will appreciate the squirrely beat and catchy guitar figure on this one from Freedom Of Choice. Strangely, Soundgarden covered this one.

20. "I Love A Man In A Uniform" - Gang Of Four [1982]

From Songs Of The Free. A rousing tongue-in-cheek song about those that lust for battle. A slew of these songs were released in this period (XTC's "Generals And Majors", Men At Work's "It's A Mistake", The Police's "Bombs Away" to name three), probably enough for a compilation all their own. It would be essential listening for those that think the eighties were just about cocaine and Rubik's Cubes. By the way, you should feel free to use Cocaine And Rubik's Cubes as an album title.

21. "New Feeling" - Talking Heads [1977]

David Byrne and company's first album, Talking Heads: 77, is so musically spacious. The room was needed to give Byrne's claustrophic lyrics free reign. As interesting as the band's later experiments with world rhythms would be, I think I come back to this album even more.

22. "I Could Be Happy" - Altered Images [1981]

I love Clare Grogan's vocal on this bittersweet ballad.

23. "Not So Much The Time" - The Records [1982]

Meanings misinterpreted. Easy enough to do in any relationship, but when long distances are involved, it's just that much harder. From Music On Both Sides.

24. "What Do All The People Know" - The Monroes [1982]

This is the only song I've heard from The Monroes, but it's just as catchy now as it was in '82.

25. "On Your Radio" - Joe Jackson [1979]

This track leads off Jackson's second album I'm The Man. An interesting riposte to everyone who's ever pissed him off - "you can only hope to hear me on your radio". We should all be so lucky.

The festival brings music, comedy, fireworks, kids' attractions and much more to Milwaukee's lakefront each and every year.

Summerfest showcases a myriad of types of bands ranging from classic rock to jazz to metal to country to alternative rock.

Previous years have brought bands like Death Cab For Cutie, Wilco, Violet Femmes, Silversun Pickups, Bob Dylan, Nine Inch Nails, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Rush, Ben Folds, Tool, Rusted Root, Steve Miller, Paul Simon, Journey, O.A.R., Nickelback, The Black Crowes, etc. (I could go on for ages about the number of bands that have played at the festival.)

This year's festival begins June 26th and ends July 6th, 2008. Tickets are $15 (quite an increase from just five years ago..) and they grant you admission to the festival and all stages except for the Marcus Ampitheater. (Marcus tickets are sold separately and are for the major headliners.)

Bands/musicians playing this year include Stevie Wonder, They Might Be Giants, Three Dog Night, Gnarls Barkley, Sevendust, Dashboard Confessional, Blondie, Old 97's, Jack's Mannequin, The Polyphonic Spree, Joe Cocker, Matisyahu, Rascal Flatts, Paramore, Sean Kingston, Filter, Pat Benatar, Alkaline Trio, John Mayer, Coheed and Cambria, Finger Eleven, Alicia Keys, Tim McGraw, Plain White T's, Gomez, Kansas, Stone Temple Piolets, Tom Petty, Cheap Trick, 311, The Bravery, Earth Wind and Fire, and Jakob Dylan.

Personally, I feel like years past have been much better when it comes to the lineup. Where are all of the indie bands? Where are the bands like Wilco and Death Cab? I'm quite disappointed with this year's selection, except for bands like Old 97's and Jakob Dylan. (But that's just two bands out of hundreds that play each year.)

But, oh well, I guess. Summerfest is still always a great time, and I highly recommend it for anyone who hasn't been there before (unless of course you don't like large crowds, because millions of people attend Summerfest each year. So, agoraphobics, stay away!)

Con la mula me bajé sus dos primeros discos “Fire of Love” y “Miami”. No se acercan a la calidad de los de Rick Nielsen… Pero la escucha fue, como diría el torero en dos palabras: Im-prezionante!

No me los pude quitar de la cabeza en semanas, y me hizo rescatar una época que consideraba ya viejuna. Eclipsados por bestias del rock americano de los primeros años 80 como Ramones, Talking Heads, Blondie, The Cramps, The Replacements o los Television de Tom Verlaine, debo reconocer que me ocupé de los grandes dejando a un lado a esta pequeña gema de Los Angeles.

Su música es sencilla, cruda, anárquica y a la vez tan ecléctica que te dan ganas de bailar, beber, gritar y cometer excesos hasta la extenuación. Por lo visto eso fue lo que les llevó a la ruina en sólo 3 años, sobre todo a su cantante  Jeffrey Lee Pierce.

Mezcla de punk, rock, blues y garage, hay canciones que podría haberlas firmado Gerry Roslie con The Sonics en los 60s o el mismísimo Frank Black de los Pixies a principios de los 90.

Mi favorita sigue siendo la inicial del Fire of Love: “Sex Beat”.

A bailar!!!

La canción de entrada de la serie nos gustaba mucho, pero pensamos que sería un tema compuesto para la misma porque además a partir de la segunda o tercera temporada cambian por una versión "más cañera".

Fue en Octubre del año pasado, después de ver uno de los mejores conciertos de nuestra vida, cuando escuchamos en la sala el tema de la serie. Al principio sonaba y no nos dimos cuenta, porque la versión original era aún mas setentera si cabe, pero en cuanto pasó el primer estribillo y escuchamos el inconfundible riff la sensación fue acojonante. Mi hermana enseguida se fue hacia el técnico de sonido y preguntó por el tema que sonaba.....eran "Big Star".

La historia de Big Star aquí (bendita wiki), resaltar que aquel concierto en el que descubrimos al autor de la canción era de The Posies, de los cuales hablaré en otra ocasión, y que los propios fundadores de "The Posies" (Strinfellow y Auer) son integrantes de "Big Star" desde que su cantante Alex Chilton decidió volver a juntar la banda en 1993.

Y ahora el tema que nos salvó la vida tanto a mi como a Mara.

In the Street, primero tocada por Big Star en su ultima formación ( con Strinfellow al bajo y Auer a la guitarra ), y segundo tocada por Cheap Trick en su versión para la serie.

De puntica se me ponen los pelos.....

In one day, I will have a thirteen year old son.  Whoa.

Thirteen was a big year for me, especially that summer.   T'was a summer of spending a lot of time with my dad at his place in Memphis.   For a boy from Gravel Ridge, summer there was paradise.  Pops lived in a townhouse complex with a pool and an assortment of randy teenagers.   I was the kid from out of town, but in a good way--novelty, fresh face, etc.  One of my favorite summers ever.  Endless days of straightup lounging, arguing about how to spell Def Leppard, stolen kisses in the deep end of the pool, and wondering if this was the summer it was finally going to happen (answer:  no).

More importantly:  it was the summer of my first real concert. 

I'd been on my mom for years, asking if I could go to concerts that rolled into Barton Coliseum.  Foreigner?  No, you're too young.   Loverboy!  Forget it.   Ozzy!!  No, there's too much pot at those shows.  Imagine my frustration when my neighbor--a year younger--won two tickets to see Rush and I was denied ("that's Devil Music--it stands for Roots Under Satan's house").  T'was a grim morning when I saw Chris Kenner wearing a Rush shirt the next day.  It glowed in the dark, he said.   Much like my fury the night before, lying in bed knowing that a sixth-grader was at Rush and I, a much more mature seventh-grader, was...not.

Mom's rules, apparently, did not apply when I was at Dad's.  So when Dad asked if I wanted to go see CHEAP TRICK, I swam through the cartoon noises in my head (ahh-a-eee/ahh-a-eee/ahh-a-eee!!) and said YES!  A concert!  Sweeet!  Who the hell is Cheap Trick?  I don't know any of their songs!  But it's a concert and I'm going!  Right on!

After what seemed like a year (but was really only about a day), we were there!  I remember it being an outdoor show, we were down near the front, and I was vibing hard on the energy of live music.  Instantly addicted to what Jeff Bebe would call "the fucking buzz, man!"  The details still stick with me:  the smell of sweat and cotton candy, the extra heartbeat in my chest from the bass and drums, the sweet raw pain in my throat from yelling, me wondering why all the mohawked guys near us (actual mohawks! wait'll I tell the guys at school!) kept screaming "She's Tight!" 

Wait!  I do know some of their songs!  "I Want You to Want Me," "Surrender," "The Dream Police"!!!!  I didn't know that was Cheap Trick!  Yeahhhh!!! 

I remember thinking that Rick Nielsen must be the greatest guitarist EVER, especially when he brought out a double-necked twelve-string guitar painted up to look like him (the necks were legs, the body was, well, a body)).  

To this day, CheckOneTwo has a soft spot for Cheap Trick and will always, always, always turn up their radio cuts and sing along.   Thanks, Dad, for that show and for all the others we went to in Memphis (Adam Ant, Billy Idol, Springsteen...too many to count).  My mommy's allright, but--in this way--my daddy's really allright, even though they both seem a little weird.

Carrying on with our theme of the late 70's is the quirky (yet not bolshi) Cheap Trick. Cheap Trick landed on planet Earth in 1977 and left a crater of a reminder that they were here and here they were going to stay. Artist Direct.com give 5 stars (as far as i know Rolling Stone gave them 0 stars) for their eponymous debut album. Lets hear their story before the Dream Police catch me (I just wish the Dream Police would catch Viacom and send them to Iran as spys ~ bye bye Viacom)

Combining a love for British guitar pop songcraft with crunching power chords and a flair for the absurd, Cheap Trick provided the necessary links between '60s pop, heavy metal, and punk. Led by guitarist Rick Nielsen, the band's early albums were filled with highly melodic, well-written songs that drew equally from the crafted pop of The Beatles, the sonic assault of the Who, and the tongue-in-cheek musical eclecticism and humor of the Move. Their sound provided a blueprint for both power pop and arena rock; it also had a surprisingly long-lived effect on both alternative and heavy metal bands of the '80s and '90s, who also relied on the combination of loud riffs and catchy melodies.

Cheap Trick's roots lie in Fuse, a late-'60s Rockford, IL, band formed by Rick Nielsen and bassist Tom Petersson, who released an unsuccessful album on Epic in 1969. After the record failed to gain any attention, the band relocated to Philadelphia and changed their name to Sick Man of Europe. The group toured Europe unsuccessfully in 1972, returning to Illinois in 1973. Not long after their return to Rockford, Rick Nielsen and Tom Petersson changed their band's name to Cheap Trick, adding drummer Bun E Carlos and vocalist Randy "Xeno" Hogan. Hogan was fired the following year and ex-folksinger Robin Zander joined the group. Between 1975 and the band's first album in 1977, Cheap Trick toured constantly, playing over 200 concerts a year, including opening slots for The Kinks, Kiss, Santana, AC/DC, and Queen. During this time, the band built up a solid catalog of original songs that would eventually comprise their first three albums; they also perfected their kinetic live show.

Cheap Trick signed with Epic Records in 1976, releasing their self-titled debut in early 1977. The record sold well in America, yet it failed to chart. However, the group became a massive success in Japan, going gold upon release. Later that year, the band released their second album, In Color. It backed away from the harder-rocking Cheap Trick, featuring a slicker production and quieter arrangements that spotlighted the band's melodic skills. Due to their constant touring, the record made it into the U.S. charts, peaking at number 73; in Japan it became another gold-seller. The band realized that they were virtual superstars in Japan when they toured the country in early 1978. Their concerts were selling out within two hours and they packed Budokan Arena.

Cheap Trick's concerts at Budokan Arena were recorded for release -- the record appeared after their third album, 1978's Heaven Tonight. That third album captured both the loud, raucous energy of their debut and the hook-laden songcraft of In Color, leading to their first Top 100 single, "Surrender," which peaked at number 62. However, the live performances on At Budokan (1979) captured the band's energetic, infectious live show, resulting in their commercial breakthrough in the U.S. The album stayed on the charts for over a year, peaking at number four and eventually selling over three million copies; a live version of "I Want You to Want Me" became their first Top Ten hit. Later that year, the group released their fourth studio album, Dream Police, which followed the same stylistic approach of Heaven Tonight. It also followed At Budokan into the Top Ten, selling over a million copies and launching the Top 40 hit singles "Voices" and "Dream Police." In the summer of 1980, the group released an EP of tracks recorded between 1976-1979 called Found All the Parts.

Following the recording of the George Martin-produced All Shook Up, Petersson left the group in the summer of 1980 to form a group with his wife, Dagmar. Petersson rejoined the band in 1988 and the group began working on a new record with the help of several professional songwriters. The resulting record, Lap of Luxury, was a platinum Top 20 hit, featuring the number one power ballad "The Flame" and a Top Ten version of Elvis Presley's "Don't Be Cruel." Busted, released in 1990, wasn't as successful as Lap of Luxury, peaking at number 48 and effectively putting an end to the group's commercial comeback. Cheap Trick signed with Warner Brothers in 1994, releasing Woke Up With a Monster; the record spent two weeks on the chart, peaking at 123. That same year, Epic Records released a sequel to At Budokan, Budokan II. Compiled from the same shows as At Budokan, the record provided an effective reminder of why the group was so popular in the late '70s, not only for the public, but for the band as well.

On April 30, 1998, the group began a four-night Chicago stay, devoting each show to reprising one of their first four albums in its entirety; the dates later yielded a 1999 live LP, Music for Hangovers, issued on their own Cheap Trick Unlimited label. A band-authorized hits collection followed in 2000. (See the band's official website for more information: (http://www.cheaptrick.com/.) By the dawn of the new millennium, Cheap Trick were still without a label, but had retained their loyal following as they kept touring the world (surprisingly, Cheap Trick turned down an offer to open up for their old pals Kiss on the masked quartet's farewell tour of arenas and amphitheaters in 2000), as another live set saw the light of day in 2001. Entitled Silver, the double-disc set (and companion DVD) was a fine document of a star-studded and career-spanning 25th anniversary show from August 28, 1999, in their hometown of Rockford, IL. The band also recorded a studio album, released in 2003 as Special One. It was followed in 2006 by Rockford. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine & Greg Prato

What does Rolling Stone think about Cheap Trick (Albeit they gave their debut 0 stars, i will at least let Rolling Stone talk about Cheap Tricks "Greatest Hits" ~ Gives them, (i hope) a chance to redeem themselves (?)) "Cheap Trick had no command of the "deep and meaningless," as Robert Plant once put it, and thus could not generate the mystery of Led Zeppelin. And they had a fitful command of the deep and meaningful, making only occasional attempts at sociological commentary that had a satiric edge closer to the Coasters than to the Who or Pink Floyd. What they did have was command of the shallow and meaningless: cliched love songs, the grand gestures of arena rock, decent hooks and explosions of Dionysian ecstasy that left audiences happy, with little residue for analysis. Frontman Robin Zander had a fine voice in the John Lennon/Liam Gallagher tradition of screaming in tune. Guitarist-songwriter Rick Nielsen could be counted on for monster chord progressions. Bassist Tom Petersson and drummer Bun E. Carlos stayed locked, however thick or thin the gruel. "Surrender" and "Dream Police" will live on. The band's live stuff, which always had the most juice, is underrepresented in this two-CD collection, but "Gonna Raise Hell" is dynamite. Their cover of "Ain't That a Shame" will teach the joys of headbanging swing to future generations. (Why didn't they include their MTV hit "Don't Be Cruel" here?) Final judgment: Hard rock with a careerist pop sensibility and a few moments of genuine inspiration. You wonder what they could have done if they hadn't tried to repeat the success of "I Want You to Want Me." CHARLES M. YOUNG(RS 945, April 1, 2004)

Cheap Trick formed in Rockford, Illinois. Their first three albums - Cheap Trick, In Color & Heaven Tonight - are considered Power pop classics. Their fourth album, a live album record in Japan at Budokan (Cheap Trick was huge in Japan, meeting with Beatlemania-like crowds upon arriving to play), was their breakthrough, becoming a hit not only in Japan but in America where it went triple-platinum. Their recordings after that, in the opinions of some, became inconsistent, but their live show was and continues to be fantastic.

Three legendary rock bands are teaming up for what is sure to be the tour of the summer.  JOURNEY, Heart and Cheap Trick are heading out on the concert trail starting July 9 in Denver, CO through October 4 in Albuquerque, NM.  Fans should check local listings for on-sale dates, which begin Saturday, April 5.
