According to the Associated Press, the national debt clock maintained by the Durst Organization on a billboard near Times Square in New York City has run out of digits now that the national debt has for the first time exceeded $10 trillion. That's more than $86,000 for each American family. Whom do we owe it to? Not to ourselves as the "powers that be" would like us to believe, but to all those who own dollars and U.S. Government bonds, notes, and bills. Yes, some are held by pension funds, but vast amounts are held by foreign central banks, especially China, Japan, and the OPEC countries.

An item that appeared in Yahoo News, dated Wed Oct 8, reports that "The late Manhattan real estate developer Seymour Durst put the sign up in 1989 to call attention to what was then a $2.7 trillion debt." Two more digits will shortly be added to enable the debt to be tracked up to one quarter quadrillion dollars. One must wonder what the dollar will be worth by then.

Now you can wear Oracle! No idea who determined the product name, but sure that person loves Oracle. By the way, I didn't buy it.

Firefox bus

You have used Firefox browsers, now get used to Firefox bus. Impressed by the design, this bus, which runs between Pollachi and Coimbatore has this fiery design on it.

Wrong time for developer!

So, what time is it? Very clearly, it's wrong time for the person who coded it (developed). He forgot to bring the time back to 00. I am not sure whether this clock will keep counting for more! This picture taken by friend at Pune railway station.

By Alexander Lawrie

A UNIQUE clock which can accurately predict the sea tides has been stolen in audacious theft.

Scottish clockmaker Archie McQuater designed the Tidal clock to correctly predict the rise and wane of the tides using the sun and the moon – and it is thought to be the only one of its kind in the world.

The one-off – valued at £2,000 - was on display at Craiglea Clocks in Edinburgh, until it disappeared on Wednesday afternoon.

Police believe one man preoccupied shop owner Ronnie Rafter while another man and woman lifted the clock from the wall, and stole another from the display in the window.

Mr Rafter did not even realise the clocks had gone until he was closing up for the night and noticed a French gilded clock had vanished from the window.

He immediately checked the shop for other missing items and discovered the distinctive, brass Tidal Clock had also been stolen.

Mr Rafter, 58, said: “The tidal clock, as far as I know, is the only one in the world to use both the sun and the moon as guides to the times. Most other tide clocks only use the moon’s gravitational pull, but my colleague Archie McQuater decided to try and solve the problem.

“He spent four years developing his clock because normal tide clocks which only use the moon can be out up to one hour each day.

“I think the thieves were professionals because how else would they know about the value of the clock. A man and a woman came in to the shop about 2pm, had a look around and left.

“They then came back an hour later, and when they were in the shop another man also appeared. They didn’t speak to each other, but I’m now sure they were working together.

“The second man asked to see a couple of clocks and the when my back was turned the couple must have lifted the clocks.

“The clock in the window was of lesser value, probably worth about £500, but my main concern is about the tidal clock. It’s so distinctive that anyone trying to sell it on will have a hard job.”

Tidal clocks were invented by clockmaker John Ferguson in the 18th century and mariners have been using his version for hundreds of years,

Most tide clocks rotate twice a day based only on the lunar position, but the distinctive stolen clock has been designed to also encompass the sun’s gravitational pull.

Master clockmaker Archie McQuater put four years of his life into designing and constructing a new version that pulls information from both the sun and the moon as a guide to the times of the tides.

Mr McQuater, 80, said: “It’s a very, very special clock. There’s only one of its kind in the world. It’s my own design.

“I was devastated when I found out it had been stolen. All the clocks I make have sentimental value.”

A police spokeswoman said: “These clocks are very distinctive, and it is likely they’ll end up being sold on. We would ask anyone who is offered one to contact police immediately.

“We would also appeal for anyone who was in the area at the time, and who saw something suspicious, to get in touch.”

The couple are described as being white, in their late 30s, or early 40s, and both of them spoke with local accents.

The man was around 6ft tall, with brown short wavy hair. He was clean-shaven, of average build, and was wearing jeans and a sky blue polo shirt. The shirt had a distinctive white collar with horizontal black stripes over it.

The woman was around 5ft 6ins tall, of slim build, with brown shoulder-length hair, which was tied back. She was wearing light-coloured clothing, a gilded belt and smart shoes.

The man who distracted the shop owner is described as being white, around 5ft 6ins tall, of stocky build, with a full face. He was in his late 30s, or early 40s, and had shaved fair hair. He also had a local accent.

Three clock towers encircle my neighbourhood. Two are attached to churches and one to a building

Three clock towers encircle my neighbourhood. Two are attached to churches and one to a building which was once a bank but is now a Pizza Express. In the quiet of the night, I hear the largest of them strike the hour, a comforting sound. But I wonder if clock towers are things of the past.

Before the Industrial Revolution, time was often measured by where the sun stood in the sky and standard British time was well nigh meaningless. If you worked in the fields, you worked from sunup to sundown and when the sun was at its zenith, you rested and ate. When railways began their march across the landscape, each private company kept their own time - trying to plan a journey that involved more than one train company must have been a nightmare - the 10.02 from Bath might already have left the platform by the time you arrived at 10.02, if you see what I mean.

Then came industry and the shifting of population from the country to the city. Machines and engines dictate a more precise concept of time and a 'working day' of exact proportions was established. It's no surprise that many cities have large and impressive clock towers paid for by the industrial magnates of the day. They wanted their workforce to be on time for work, and that clock made sure they were. For churches, it wasn't enough to listen for the bell announcing that service was about to begin. A handsome clock would ensure that services were on time with a full house of a congregation. (On a side note, it seems that most Sunday morning services in this country begin at 11am - I wonder when that became standard and why?)

At the end of the nineteenth century, only the wealthy could afford a fob watch. It was war which brought the widespread use of wristwatches. British soldiers were issued with special issue wristwatches for the trenches of World War I. Slaughter was going to be on time from now on...

I remember when digital watches appeared and how excited we were by them. My mother said it would make us all lazy about telling the time - no more need for the twin hands of minute and hour. She taught me how to tell the time on a little Timex watch - I was pretty slow to learn and wasn't above inventing any old time when asked by an unsuspecting (watchless) pal. I could never remember which was the longer hand - the hour or the minute. Thank goodness I didn't know at that stage that different cultures describe time differently. We say 'quarter to ten', the Americans say 'a quarter before ten'. Their way is probably more logical, but I still find it slightly confusing.

I believe that the sale of wristwatches has slumped in recent years. Few of us have them on our wrists anymore - we rely on our mobile phones with their luminous electronic precision.

I enjoy both digital and 'real' clocks. Now I lead a small life, I often go out without a watch (or a phone) and rely on clocks (on towers or not) around the city. It's not hard, although in the country it would be more of a problem, I imagine. Here in Edinburgh, there is one particular ritual of time that is observed daily. The one o'clock gun sounds from the battlements of Edinburgh Castle - it's a substantial noise - I'm a mile away, but can hear it clearly.

It appears even technology cannot cope with the global financial crisis: the National Debt Clock in New York has run out of digits for the first time.

The electronic billboard hit its limit after US public debt rose above the $10 trillion mark for the first time on September 30.

As a temporary fix the dollar sign has been switched to a figure--the '1' in $10 trillion. The clock is currently marking the US federal government’s national debt at about $10.2 trillion.

The Durst Organization says it plans to update the sign next year by adding two digits. That will make it capable of tracking debt up to a quadrillion dollars.

Certainly, Congress and the White House will figure out how to keep up their end of the competition.

I must say, I saw this on the BBC News website this morning, and it did make me chortle some what.

Even in the current financial crisis, there's still a glimmer of humour to be had.

It feels rather surreal however to be giggling at the idea of the USA taking on much more debt than was ever envisaged... especially when one wonders which countries/institutions can afford to be lending the US Government $11 trillion as debts. Surely they'll never realistically see it back?!

If any item of interior décor needed a rethink it had to be the almost defunct mantelpiece clock. Usually given as a retirement gift to help you watch your last years slip away, suddenly this forgotten item is hot again. With Marc Newson unveiling his new design for the 80 year old Jaeger-LeCoultre Atmos the trendiest mantelpieces around the world are going to be seen gracing this über cool clock. Floating in a Baccarat lead glass cube, this clock never needs winding as it lives on air.

One of the Apps that comes with all iPhones and iPod Touchs straight out of the box is the Clock App

One of the Apps that comes with all iPhones and iPod Touchs straight out of the box is the Clock Application. On the surface this may seem like a fairly simple App but it can do some useful things that can save your time when your on the go.

1. World Clock

This feature allows you to display the current time in any city any where in the world. At any one time you can view up to four different countries simultaneously. But you can view more if you wish! Just simply flick the up on the different clocks to scroll down the list.

To add a new clock simply touch the plus '+' sign in the top left hand corner of the 'World Clock' pane on the Clock Application. You will be prompted and asked to enter a city of your choice. As you type the iPhone will narrow the search for potential cities to save you time in finding the one you are after.

Clicking the edit button offers your to options. You can either delete one of the clocks if you no longer have a need for it. Or you can rearrange the order of the clocks into a order that is more pleasing for you. To do this simply click the edit button and then drag the individual clock but the three parallel lines at the end of the tab.

2. Alarm

The alarm application works as a standard alarm clock does. You tell it when you want to wake up, and it wakes you up! But this one has added functionality.

First off you can have more than one alarm. So if you have got a couple of appointments in one day that you really need to remember you can just add another alarm.

But it goes further than that. If your anything like me then you will like to a have a longer sleep at the weekends. So what you can do it set up another alarm for the weekend that wakes you at a different time. To do so simply click the edit tab on the top left hand corner of the Alarm pane in the Clock App and click on the alarm you would like to change. The option at the top is 'Repeat'. You want to select this and tell the application which days you would like this alarm to sound on. You can select as many or as few days as you'd like. Then hit the back arrow, and then click Save.

As you can see on my alarm I have a different time for during the week, Saturdays and Sundays. But because I know that i've preprogrammed my alarms, where ever I am, it will always go off next to me!

3. Stopwatch

This part of the Clock Application allows the user to start a stop watch and to take lap times from that time.

This is one of the more basic functions of the clock but it can come in very handy. Once you hit the big green 'Start' button the clock will run indefinitely. If your touch the 'Lap' button this grabs the exact time at which you touched the button and presents it below the 'Stop' and 'Lap' buttons. The purpose of this is so you can see how long it has taken you to do something.

Imagine you were going to go for a run around the block a couple of times. Maybe you'd like to know how long you've been working out for, and how long it has taken you to do each circuit. Well you can simply hit the start button when you begin running. Each time you pass the place where you started hit the 'Lap' button and your iPhone will record the time between the presses of the 'Lap' button.

Fortunately this App will run in the background so if you want to measure a very long time and use some of the other features of your iPhone at the same time, your time will not be lost - it will simply keep running.

4. Timer

I like to think of this as more of an Egg Timer. You simply spin the dials depending how much time you would like on the clock then hit start. From that point the Timer will count down and play the sound you have selected, when it hits zero. As with the Stopwatch, and all the other features, this will run in the background. So once you've started your Timer you can either lock the phone, or hit the home button and continue using the other features of your iPhone.

So thats the Clock App on the iPhone. You now know everything you need to know to make sure your at the right place, at the right time. So no excuses!

Enjoy!

Namco Bandai will release a new alarm clock this November which requires the user to shoot a target in order to turn the alarm off.

Behold the Gun O'Clock

"When the alarm stars ringing, you have to get up, grab your gun, and start shooting. Every time you pull the trigger and miss, you'll feel the blowback—if you hit the target, the alarm will stop and you can wake up refreshed and satisfied. You can choose from Normal or Hard mode—the latter requires you to hit the target five times." LISA KATAYAMA from Tokyo Mango

I personally like the idea of waking up and being presented with a challenge...although I wonder if it has a sleep mode since personally I require hitting snooze at least 5 times before actually waking up.

On a side note, I love the illustrations that come with the press release

Everybody likes to track what they were doing and when things happened. It's part of life, memories and the such like.

British designer Mark Owens has come up with this clock that prints out the time and a little blank area which allows you to write your thoughts for that particular time. Simply press the button and out prints the paper receipt, write your thoughts on it and file it, or throw it away.

Everybody wants one of these, but hooked up to the internet, and using some kind of interface linked to Twitter, we can see what people are saying at what time... mmmmm.

The weather is now getting colder, the leaves are turning and it has been rather wet in Hebden lately but this hasn't dampened people's spirits and, as new work has started to arrive, we have been really busy.

This month is one which we either love or dread as the sun sits lower in the sky and it starts to get darker earlier. We can tend to hibernate and reflect on the year that is starting to pass by so quickly with Christmas fast approaching.

This year has been another tremendous year for Heart Gallery and those who truly know me understand that it has been an emotional journey which has been faced with dignity.

I hope you enjoy these snippets of new work and call in to Heart Gallery soon to say Hi.

Bye for now

It's always extremely strange to move from daylight-saving-time to "normal" or winter-time. It makes you consider how time really is a thing we control. Or rather, the perception of time is something we control. By changing the clocks back an hour, we change the time of dawn, of dusk. Strange to ponder such things.

Yet, this is NOT why I decided to dedicate a post to the changing of the clocks here in the Holy Land. As much as I enjoy BSing about philosophy and pretending to understand the physics, such as they are, of time, I do not believe I could convincingly write an entire post on such things. No, what I wanted to demonstrate here is how religion rules this damn country.

Yom Kipur is coming up, which is a day of fasting in the Jewish religion. A day to apologize for the sins of your past year and turn over to a new page. The religious Jews, who, despite being a minority, have way too much power make the government declare a change to winter-time about a month earlier than the rest of the world. Why? Apparently so they won't have to fast as much. Tomorrow starts officially at sundown of today in Judaism, and for some reason winter time makes the time between sundown to sundown shorter.

People who don't even open the fridge on Shabes, since the lord forbids electricity on the Day of Rest, change the whole freaking clock to suit their needs. I can only say that I see this as RELIGION FAIL.
