Vi riporto un vecchio articolo che scrissi per un altro mio sito (afterGuitar, poi abbandonato per motivi di tempo). Spiega un pò in linea di massima come sistemare i propri pedali con il proprio amplificatore. Sono dei consigli di massima, ma sempre utili.

Questa pagina è dedicata alla sistemazione della sequenza degli effetti: oltre ad una piccola introduzione a come impostare in maniera standard i pedali, cercherò di spiegare quali sono state le soluzioni di alcuni più illustri chitarristi.

Partendo dai consigli standard che vi do potete modificare la catena con criterio e cognizione (a volte anche a caso) per trovare il vostro suono. ma sicuramente una buona partenza e la conoscenza dell'effetto favoriscono la fase della personalizzazione.

Prima spiegazione per i novizi che, per la prima volta, uniscono un deelay a un distorsore. ci avvaleremo di pochissimi effetti e di un amply basilare: di quelli da casa. Il tipico set-up per gli effetti più comuni è questo:

Si tratta di una semplicissima catena di chitarra > volume > wha-wha > distorsore o overdrive > chorus > deelay > amply con equalizzazione. Naturalmente ogni pedale dovrà essere settato in modo adeguato. avendo già questo tipo di setting potete suonare ogni tipo di musica vogliate (più o meno).

Di norma (e lo potete leggere ovunque) la catena standard mette in testa i pedali di espressione (comp, volume, wha) poi quelli di distorsione (distorsore e overdive) poi quelli di modulazione del suono (chorus, flanger, phaser, ecc.) e infine il deelay. anche le maggiori casi produttrici consigliano in questa maniera e io in parte sono d'accordo: la vera unicità del suono sta nel tipo di pedale scelto e nel come lo si imposta. ovviamente la sperimentazione non ha limiti...

Il cosiddetto loop, ovvero la possibilità che offre l'amplificatore di inserire gli effetti in una apposita entrata, permette una maggiore versatilità del suono. Personalmente ritengo che tale "stratagemma" sia utile soprattutto per inserire la distorsione valvolare dell'amply all'interno della catena in maniera da poter sfruttare anche eventuali deelay. Ecco la catena completa (degli effetti "tipo" più usati) con tanto di loop.

Per motivi di spazio ne avrò saltato qualcuno ma più o meno il senso è quello: chitarra > compressore > volume > whammy/octave > wha-wha > distorsore o overdrive > testata (con switch) > cassa e poi send > flanger > phase > altro > chorus > deelay > return.Diciamo che la testata si posiziona come un altro distorsore e poi continuiamo con tutto quello che metteremmo dopo: non entro nei dettagli del setting perché paiono abbastanza ovvi.

Ora, anche qui possiamo scegliere altre soluzioni e - ovviamente - non è necessario possedere tutti questi pedali: alcuni, tipo Paul Gilbert, posizionano il chorus prima dell'in e solamente il deelay nel loop. tutto in base a ciò che volete ottenere.

Il pedale del volume non è altro che un potenziometro che regola "la quantità" di segnale da far passare e -perciò- di solito viene posizionato nelle primissime posizioni della catena. in alcuni casi e per alcuni generi è possibile che questo pedale sia più comodo posizionato nelle ultime posizioni della catena. Se posizionato prima del distorsore, le modifiche apportate col volume saranno subite anche nella distorsione e può essere usato appositamente per regolare la quantità di distorsione. essendo il distorsore un effetto che "guadagna" sul volume apparentemente le piccole modifiche di volume interessano solo la quantità di distorsione: succede la stessa cosa col potenziometro della chitarra.Se posizionato dopo la distorsione, le modifiche di volume non interesseranno la quantità di distorsione ma solamente il volume complessivo di uscita. soprattutto in stili molto pesanti dove una distorsione massiccia non vuole essere persa neanche a bassi volumi è una buona soluzione anche se ne esistono di migliori (booster, compressori, ecc.).

Ricordate comunque che il deelay va sempre e costantemente alla fine!

Before I move much more forward let me move back a little bit.

Thomas and I have been rigorously testing pretty much every format, with a good hour or two of debate over sideboard options and dropping one of this or that for one of this or that (you know, test-and-tweak) daily.  Fortunately, because of this, I consider us two of the most highly educated people on the subject of constructed MtG in South Dakota.  Unfortunatly, this comes at a cost of time (minor) and watching decks that you thought would be really fun to play and might be competitive get absolutely SMASHED (major).  Quite disheartening.  For example, the minute we started looking at the Shards list, I saw Ethersworn Canonist (1W, 2/2 White Artifact Creature - Human Cleric.  Each player who has played a nonartifact spell this turn can't play additional nonartifact spells.) and thought it was AMAZING.  "Wow," I said, "that thing totally wrecks Storm-based combo and is definetly a pain in the side of permission-based control." Then I noticed it was an artifact creature.  Then I noticed it was a bear.  Then I started brewing, and Thomas and I developed the following monstrosity:

It was ridiculous.  Three straight days of testing and basically nothing came close.  Outraced other aggro, killed control before it could stabilize, or at least put the writing on the wall (flipped erayo + canonist is the hardest soft lock i've ever seen), and combo saw canonist and the bottom dropped out.  Even other affinity decks we're running this well.  Take a 50/50 matchup in the mirror pre-side, bring in kataki's and smothers, and unless they did they same (never happened) the matchup looked more like 90/10 post-side.  Then this article came out and TEPSAGAN (TEPS with Angel's Grace [AG] and Ad Nauseam [AN] starting rearing its ugly head.....

Yes, it was storm based combo.  But it was fast.  Really fast.  I couldn't put enough pressure on the board to kill it before it went off, which means my outs were down to 4 (the canonist) pre-side and 8 (canonist + thoughtseize) post-side.  I lost.  Badly.  A lot.  I'm a big believer in playing the best deck in the format and just hoping you get good matchups.  This was good.  I thought it was the best.  I was wrong. TEPSAGAN was faster and (very surprisingly) more consistant.  I had to play it.  So I did.  Here's the tweaked list:

It's disgusting.  You can do the standard TEPS thing and storm up for mind's desire, storm up and just hardcast tendrils of agony (happens quite a bit against Get There and Zoo since they do so much damage to themselves), or you can cast angel's grace followed by ad nauseam, draw your entire deck, play out your remaining chrome moxes, rite of flames, pentad prisms, and manamorphoses (you don't lose the game to the draw effect with 0 cards in your library due to angel's grace), storm for a bunch, and cast either tendrils or grapeshot, whichever makes you feel better about yourself.

The sideboard handles all the stuff that can give you problems.  Thoughtseize is against Swans and the mirror.  Shattering spree is really good against affinity, and has been amazing in the mirror sometimes and really mediocre others.  Pact of Negation automatically comes in game 2 against basically everything.  Everyone has something against this, or will, so just bring it in.  Slaughter Pact handles Gaddok Teeg and Ethersworn Canonist, both of which give you fits.  Chain of Vapor is the catch all for other stuff that's annoying, like Thorn of Amethyst, the aforementioned creatures (Swans, Teeg, Canonist), and any enchantment that might be giving you trouble (Ivory Mask maybe?).  The real star of the sideboard is Ignorant Bliss, however.  I'm never sad to see it.  At worst, it replaces itself at their EOT step.  At best, it makes you immune to their discard until EOT and helps you dig one card deeper for that last mana or combo piece you just gotta have to go off.   This saw play in the side of Dragonstorm decks in standard a while back, and I think it's a great fit here.

I believe that these two decks are clearly the best in extended right now, as they both slide a ton of stuff underneath control's stabilization turn and have absolutely explosive potential by turn 4.  There might be something waiting in the weeds that I just haven't seen or read about or thought of yet, but I don't really see anything on the horizon at the moment.

Other decks that seem to be getting a lot of lip-service are Slide variants, Zoo, Get There, Swans, and my favorite sub-Tier 1 (in my opinion, of course) deck has to be the Life from the Loam/Persist aggro-control thing with Tarmogoyfs.  Who knew Raven's Crime could be so good?!

In this article, I will show a way to add combo boxes to toolbars by creating a custom control. With this approach, you can put just anything in the toolbars.

Lets take a look at following code.

This code creates a custom control called MyCombo. This custom control is extended from ControlContribution.

The components to be contained within this custom control and their layouts are defined in the createControl method. In our case, we just need to show a combo box. In addition to instantiating the combo box, I have put some additional codes to handle the events also.

It might be a good idea to put a method that can be called externally to manipulate the items in combo box. So, just for a demo purpose, I also put a method called setValue.

Now, to add this custom control go to your application's ActionBarAdvisor derived class. Usually in a normal RCP application, the name of this derived class is ApplicationActionBarAdvisor. Here you will have to override a method. A sample is shown below.

2.) Under Appearance Go to effects
3.) In Effects set the combo to ClearType instead of normal.

Now watch as your desktop and your text automatically transform to give you that graphical edge you've always wanted.
