Best times. I started doing that not too long ago actually because was really creepy when this guy started staring at me. And he would not look away and I didn't know how to react. So I would look over at him, look away, look back at him and then look away. Swearing  to myself and asking why this asshole felt the need to stare.  Just how long had he been staring, what did he see and did I pick my nose while he was watching? All these things went through my head and at the time I could not figure it out.

I now know why he did it. It is so funny to see the reactions of complete strangers when they finally realize that they are being watched.  I have seen some people do some fucked up stuff in their cars at traffic lights.

people smoking shit out of huge pipes

people drinking beer (and there is a beer can in the cup holder)

people changing clothing (not really that fucked up until you realize there are people watching)

Funny things happen when you stare at people...or just catch them doing...stuff..  (I didn't catch these people..someone else was lucky enough to catch this...and take a picture)

The harvesting is completed. The canning is finishing up. The days get shorter.

Everyone begins to settle in for the winter. Relaxing by bon fires. Visiting with friends.

A coyote howls off at a distance.

At dusk, this poor soul begins to stir.

 He whimpers and whines and by dark he's moaning. He wants out and he'll let no one rest until he's released or darkness gives way to the light of day.

And this guy. 

He yells at everything that moves. Warning them to "STAY OUT"! Even the bats get scolded, as they whiz by.

I'm telling ya, things get creepy this time of year.

I've had reports of a witch flying around at night. Although, I haven't witnessed it myself. There are people who swear they've had to run for cover or be sentenced to a life of misery, living in a witches attic. With only spiders for food and gulping swamp water to quench a never ending thirst.

Her cackling can be heard for miles, as she flies under the cover of night.

Searching...

They say she's looking for her little sister.

Then there's the incessant, mocking laughter of this creepy little terror.

At dusk, he begins to giggle. By dark, he is laughing.

So loud and annoying that it will make even the calmest of souls, lose their mind. He hides and he laughs. He never comes out. Is he luring something or someone? Is he inviting his kind to join him? Why does he laugh?

There are earsplitting shrieks coming from the darkness. From what, I don't know. Could it be an owl? Or something worse? Something too horrible for the human mind to fathom?

And don't forget about her unremitting, muffled curses as she tries to release herself from the earth that's holding her captive.

Could she be the little sister?

I can't speak for all progressive Democrats, but I find the idea of Chinese style state-run television a little bit frightening. Advertising is one thing, but having your own cable television channel sort of pushes it, Mr. Obama. The idea of a President, let alone a Presidential candidate, having his own channel for propaganda use is a little too Soviet, too 1984 for me, in addition to being in plain poor taste.

Yikes! Let's hope the OBAMA Channel and the Obama camps and youth training will not turn American kids into unthinking zombies. Meanwhile, let's hope the McCain campaign realizes that Obama is not the second coming of Jimmy Carter, or of Paris Hilton, as they have argued. He is not just an inexperienced celebrity politician, but also something much more sinister. McCain should be telling the American people that Obama seems to be positioning himself as the second coming of Jim Jones, David Koresh, or if he is elected, something far far scarier!

I have no doubt that some of the problem is related to McCain’s policies as he presents them...but to be completely honest, there may be an additional factor.

To put it as bluntly as possible: McCain looks a little...creepy.

And it’s not just me: The Girlfriend was mentioning how creepy he looked in the debate as we talked about it this morning. Ask around, and someone might describe him that way to you.

Why is that so, how is this observation going to affect McCain going forward; and most important of all...how does this connect to the Burger King and the design of video game characters?

To help answer the question, let me introduce you to Dr. Masahiro Mori.

In the 1970s, Dr. Mori, a Japanese roboticist, used psychological research to develop a theory that has become known as the “Uncanny Valley”.

To make a long story short, Dr. Mori compared human emotional reactions to various human and cartoon characters...and corpses...and created charts to display the various intensities of reactions to the movement and appearance of the characters and the corpses.

As it turns out, Mori’s research suggests humans react in a similar emotional manner to near-realistic human representations and corpses. In both cases, the emotional response seems to be revulsion.

This research has practical applications: it is reported that ASIMO, the humanoid robot developed by Honda, is intentionally designed with a blank face in order to avoid the Uncanny Valley problem. The design of artificial limbs is also impacted by this phenomenon.

(Additional research published in 2007 in MIT’s journal “Presence” seems to confirm Mori’s conclusions.)

There are some who seek to break through the Uncanny Valley barrier, most notably Hanson Robotics, with their Eva, Jules, and Joey Chaos devices.

Sure enough, video game designers use this information in their work...and now that you think about it, hasn’t the Burger King always creeped you out?

Now you know why.

Which bring us to John McCain.

Last night’s debate seemed to demonstrate a challenge McCain faces that transcends the words he says: his physical movement. He does indeed move stiffly, and he had odd gestures that detract from what he says.

But beyond that, he seems to have that weird laugh that he deploys for his own jokes...and having spent time talking to an audience—successfully and unsuccessfully—I can tell you that if you are laughing at your own jokes, you better not be the only one in the room doing the laughing.

He (and Palin) also add an odd “breathiness” to their voices when they are trying to emphasize a point, that, at least in my house, seems to be unnatural and offputting.

There’s also that smile: it appears forced. He never seems to be so much smiling as grimacing...and I don’t know that I’ve ever seen him appear genuinely happy.

And, my friends, when he gets nervous, my friends, he seems to say "my freinds" way too much--to the point where it's kind of...well, creepy.

So for today, a short story: McCain seems to be suffering from the same problem as the Burger King, and it’s not all his fault—but that having been said, it does seem to affect his ability to connect to a larger audience...and it may explain why Sarah Palin gets much better reactions—and larger crowds—when she goes out and delivers the same message to the same audiences.

This was the reason why I could never sleep at night as a child.

Everything was great, I was cruising along, a little later start than I wanted but no sense worrying.  The sun began to go down, I knew a little of the route so I was not concerned except for the fact that I was now in deer country (all of Michigan is deer country but this spot is heavily concentrated, I have already lost one car to a deer).  I was now gripping the steering wheel like an alcoholic grips a brown paper bag, me and the steering wheel were one and I was conscious of my face and body placement (hands at 10 and 2) in case an impact would deploy the air bag (again, I have already hit a deer and I love air bags but they do hurt, even though they save you).  Finally getting close to the exit my GPS says just 14 more miles......but I pass a sign that looks familiar and I instantly think that the sign is the way I normally go but I travel on, I do not exit, instead I put all my faith into my GPS. 

The next thing I know I am in the backwoods.  If you read my last post I do not do well with creepy forest places with no artificial lighting in sight.  The road was dirt and had the name followed by a number or county lane or something you do not normally see except in a horror movie or novel (or more likely up north), I struggled to keep the panic in and was sure any headlights behind me were people up to no good (yes there were houses sparadically placed but I was not thinking clearly), not to mention the images from "Wrong Turn" that kept popping in my head.....breath damn it, breath....calm yourself, there is no evil living dead creature blocking the road waiting to get hit and there is no way I am stopping, unlike in the movies I would not hit the brakes and go back to take a look.............hello!  

My GPS was not wrong and it got me to my location unharmed.  A normal person may even have thought the road was nice and enjoyed the scenery and maybe I would have as well......in the light of day.  In the end it shaved some minutes from my arrival time and showed that I can travel up north as well as the next GPS dependant person ( I go by land marks not directions).  The trip was a success and I brought home some salmon and the confident attitude that I can make it to most locations with perhaps an earlier start to extend my daylight driving.

She stared at me like I wasn't human or something. I tried to ignore her, but it started getting a little irritating after I finished the sale, and she still wasn't leaving. She then asked me, "Where are your ancestors from?" For a second, I thought she was being racist or something, but then realized that this lady was serious. I briefly explained how my dad was Chinese and my mom was Japanese, and she seemed to space out while staring directly at my face. "You're a lucky boy, you have a good look," is all she said, then she resumed the staring. I really wanted this creepy lady to leave.

After a few moments, I decided I'll break the silence with a, "How about you?" but then she started giving me a history lesson on her entire family tree while throwing in some awfully bad jokes. Somehow the subject of potato heads emerged from her ramble.

Eventually, she did leave, although she left some other customers behind her feeling quite possibly the same way I did. I felt slightly violated, but it did make me think a little about ancestry and such things.

I hope she doesn't come back again, not while I'm working anyway.

Uh oh, I should get to class now.]) I found it in my backpack today after class. It made me feel all right. Those quotes always seem to pop up in the strangest places when I'm feeling a little down in da dumps.

Paul Roland...a guy from the eighties about whom I know absolutely nothing. And then i decided to put my laziness away and at least read his biography on last.fm. So he writes books about mysticism...that's no wonder, hearing his music.

Especially his album 'Cabinet of Curiosities' from 1987 is a classic that got lost in time somewhere. On this timeless album, Roland plays a sort of medieval sounding folk, that is a little scary. I haven't heard any album that gets so close to the creepy sound of 70's folk band Comus.  Next to that, the eighties are also present, but then the eigthies I can stand.  It could also be a David Bowie acoustic bootleg ( well, the song Demin In A Glass Case really is)

a flickr contact found a person using my photos and my kids' names and pretending to be their mom while answering questions with her years of parenting advice!  hey, she even has a blog!  why, apparently this 10 years younger other me loves camping.

after scanning her questions and answers, there is one thing i know.   jolene, no colleen, no jolene (can't get the lies straight right from the start) needs to learn the definition of irony or stop using the word.

I am not one of those women who is scared of mice. I know that unless I come into contact with it, its excrements, or something it has contaminated, it cannot harm me. Nonetheless, I do not like the idea of sharing my apartment with a rodent. I had a feeling that I had a mouse here based on noises I've heard over the last week or two, but I was okay with the idea of a mouse as long as it didn't get into my food or clothes and as long as I didn't have to see it. But now that I have visual confirmation, I'm creeped out. And the idea that it could easily just run up the stairs to my bedroom is disconcerting.

I think that I dislike mice.

I hope that it doesn't get into the oven.
