A while back I posted up a list of all of the people listed by m.d. filter as having died by criminal violence in New Orleans in 2007. I invited anyone who came to the sight to leave their own memorials to those who died.

Not a day goes by that I don't have visitors coming in from Google or somewhere else to that page, a constant reminder on those days when the newspaper is free of reports of another shooting. Not many people leave comments, but I got two in one day and thought I should call them out. Please go read Wendy and Keyonna's comments on the post Silence is Violence Remembers.

I get almost daily visits for George Hankton. I don't know who he was, but a lot of people are looking for somone by that name, and I can't find any famous person who matches up

[Source: Jahna Berry, Arizona Republic] — When Phoenix’s Parks and Recreation Department

[Source: Jahna Berry, Arizona Republic] -- When Phoenix's Parks and Recreation Department cut $15.5 million, it was only a matter of time before downtown parks began to feel the pain. Among the laundry list of cuts was the $288,000 private security contract for six Phoenix parks, including Margaret T. Hance Park at 1134 N. Central Ave. That and other budget cuts took effect in April, city officials say.

Roosevelt Action Association members have complained to the city about the lost security detail, but it doesn't look like it will come back any time soon. "I believe this decision (was) short sighted and injurious to our neighborhood," wrote the group's president Steve Brueckner in a neighborhood newsletter. While the one man patrol "may not sound like much, this security made a significant difference in the number of crime- and drug- related incidents occurring in the park at night. The patrol also did a great job of keeping people from spending the night in the park," Brueckner wrote.

The night guard was one of many tough decisions, said assistant parks director Jim Burke. The cuts included eliminating most of the city's youth sports programs, which served 3,850 children last year. "This is the new reality at the parks department," Burke said. When residents call with concerns, "We have to figure out how to make it as positive as possible," he added.

ABC News just reported on more Obama and Illinois corruption. Companies and employees that helped Obama have been rewarded. Even though this article is not indepth or hard hitting, it is at least an effort to question Obama. A recent post on this blog reveals the deeper ties to Chicago and Illinois corruption surrounding Obama. Here are some excerpts from the ABC News article:

"In a speech to the Urban League last July, Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill., boasted of his efforts in 2001 to help a handful of African American-owned investment firms in Chicago get a larger share of business with Illinois state pension funds. "And in six months, they got about a half-billion dollars' worth of business simply on their excellence," Obama said.

What he did not say in his speech was that the owner of one of the investment firms, John Rogers of Ariel Capital, is a principal campaign fundraiser. Nor did he reveal that employees of the firms he helped have since contributed to or helped to raise more than $765,000 for his campaigns, according to campaign documents. Nor did he mention that two of the firms have allowed him to use their private jets. Nor did he mention that two of the firms have since been dismissed by the state pension fund for "underperformance." "

"Now, Rogers is an Illinois finance co-chairman for Obama's presidential campaign, having raised more than $200,000 for the campaign. Ariel employees have given nearly $70,000 to Obama's White House effort -- for a total of more than $130,000 to Obama's political career since 2001, when the politician went to bat for the company."

"Three other minority-run firms -- Holland Capital, Loop Capital and Capri Capital Partners -- also saw hundreds of millions of assets turned over to them to manage after meeting with Obama and the state pension boards."

For those of you who have been depressed, despondent, abused, neglected, suicidal, vi

For those of you who have been depressed, despondent, abused, neglected, suicidal, victimized or just oppressed; know this, the human spirit is subject to change at any moment...it is resilient. The absolutely amazing thing about going through any of those difficulties in life, is that it has the potential of either destroying a person, or strengthening them, like steel that has gone through the heat of a fire.

What causes a person to either become submerged under the weight of negative influences; or, to spring up and bounce back even stronger ?

I believe it is a combination of things. We are all products of our past; we have been taught many things throughout our childhoods and young adulthood that influences how we perceive things. Most of those things are unconscious and basically invisible, but, still they are there; determining how we interpet the challenges in life; and, therefore, how we handle those same challenges. We have to make a personal committment to ourselves to change the direction our lives are going if we wish to live a life that is full of the good things life has to offer.

If we have been lucky enough to have a strong healthy foundation during those formative years we have a huge headstart. If we were instead rooted in poor soil and unhealthy relationships during those years; we often have alot to overcome.

It is not impossible to overcome those things. It is by strength of will and determination that we learn how to channel our inner self to go in the direction of love, health, and personal well-being. It is a matter of retraining how we think about things and learning not to focus on the obstacles and the negativity that surrounds us on a daily basis.

I was reminded of these things today, when i read about Elizabeth Fritzl, the young Austrian woman held captive by her father in a basement for 24 years. She was forced to endure loneliness, sexual abuse, emotional damage and physical confinement. She was raped repeatedly by her father and gave birth to seven children during this time. They grew up without "normal" human interaction.

At this point they are receiving treatment in a psychiatric facility. The family is getting help learning how to bond together; how to communicate with others, how to function outside of their basement prison. Elizabeth, the mother of the children grew up at home, with her mother and father...until she was 18 years old. At that point, he forced her to live in the basement while explaining her "disappearance" to the rest of the world by saying that she had run off to join a cult.

Elizabeth and her children are bouncing back in amazing ways. One would think that they might never recover. After all, some of them didn't speak as we know speaking; they communicated with grunts and noises. However, they survived against all odds. Their healing and renewal will happen with good guidance and therapy. It should be encouraging to us all that the human spirit is resilient; it is meant to sustain us in times of devastation.

At some point in life we have to "choose" to overcome the negative forces that have gone before and "decide" to grow, heal, strengthen; and, claim victory over the things in life that hold us back from who we were created to be. It is work, it isn't easy and often professional help is necessary; but, it is so worth it to have the freedom to once again live life fearlessly, and fully, with joy!

An Australian army captain who stole 10 rocket launchers from the military and sold them on the black market must have known they could end up in the hands of terrorists.

Shane Della-Vedova was sentenced yesterday to a maximum of 10 years' jail, with a minimum term of seven years, after pleading guilty to stealing and selling the rocket launchers between 2001 and 2003 to a convicted criminal with terrorist links.

Sydney District Court judge Jonathan Williams said nine of the 10 rocket launchers sold on the black market by Della-Vedova remained missing, with little chance of recovery.

Jailing the former soldier, Judge Williams said it was "inconceivable" Della-Vedova did not consider the weapons would be intended for a terrorist act. (news)

By Abbie Boudreau
Correspondent, CNN Special Investigations Unit

It was toward the end of the day, and my producer, Scott Zamost and I were scrolling through story tips from CNN viewers.

There was one that jumped out at us. It read, “Please, help me,” and the subject line said, “YouTube Video of Crying 16-year-old Rape Victim Pleas for Help.” There was a link to a video posted on YouTube by a Florida girl.

Right away, we watched the video, and the first thing we thought was, "Can this be real?"

Within minutes, we contacted the young girl, Crystal. We talked at length with both Crystal and her father, Dennis. Quickly, we learned this girl was real, and she had a real story she wanted to share.

Two days later, we flew to Florida to meet Crystal and to learn more about why she posted a video about her most private moments, for the world to see and judge.

She told us she felt she had nothing to lose, and she was desperate to find someone who would listen to her story.

Crystal may be one of the first to post a video like this on YouTube, but she is also among a growing number of young girls who talk about their most private experiences online to perfect strangers.

Experts say the reason more girls are detailing their lives on the Internet is because they are desperate, and in many cases, they feel it’s the only way to seek justice and make people listen -- when most people in their lives don’t seem to care.

The Rape, Abuse, and Incest National Network, or RAINN, says this new trend can be very dangerous, considering potential online predators that could be trolling the Web, looking to re-victimize these young girls.

I wonder how big of a deal it is for people to reveal their deepest, darkest secrets to strangers online.

I mean, in Crystal's case, her plea for help seemed to work.

She got our attention, and as a result, she is now seeking professional help for her depression and anxiety.

But do these cases always have happy endings? And also, maybe we should ask ourselves what the world is coming to when teenagers resort to posting videos on YouTube to find the help they need.

This is a template you can use to make your own deck of playing cards through my Heritage Makers business www.Family-Tales.com. You insert the photos of the people you love, or your dog, Harley, Classic car, whatever you wish and customize your deck of cards. Makes a perfect Father's Day gift!

It is a basic card set that can be used to play Rook (or Phase 10 ... which only uses numbers 1-12, 4 wild cards, and 5 skip cards ... kind of like rummy).

Use these cards to play "Scum" or "President" (you can find directions on the internet) Sooooo easy to play, even the little kids can keep up! (and usually win! lol!)

You could also play "go fish" or almost any other card game .... you would just be using all numbers

There are four colors (instead of suits), and 2 wild cards.

More than 50 ducks have died after being exposed to oily water on a waste retention site in western Saskatchewan.

Energy and Resources Minister Bill Boyd says in a release that 53 birds died earlier this week near the community of Luseland.

The site is operated by Newalta Corp. and is part of heavy oil production in the area.

The release says such sites normally contain dry sand recovered during processing and recycling of crude oil from tank bottoms, but an unusually wet spring led to a buildup of water that attracted the birds.

Last month, about 500 ducks died on a Syncrude Canada tailings pond in northern Alberta when air cannons used to scare the birds away could not be used because of a late snowfall. (news)

"When a police officers are actually swarmed on the street, it's like the old west and we've got to get control of it," Stelmach said Wednesday. "This is not the kind of message we want to send to others in terms of safe communities in Edmonton."

I need your help.
Will someone, anyone, please give me an example of an already ailing neighbourhood

I need your help.

Will someone, anyone, please give me an example of an already ailing neighbourhood that actually benefited from expanded gaming facilities right in the midst? Can anyone show me where adding slot machines to an existing bingo hall has actually improved and revitalized the surrounding area?

I've written several times about the spiralling degradation of Newton, a residential neighbourhood in Surrey that has been suffering for quite a while. My most recent article was published as an open letter the the editor of the Surrey Now. http://lailayuile.wordpress.com/2008/04/07/two-sides-to-every-coin-and-every-story/. My outrage is clear and certainly the recent news that Surrey Mayor and council support Boardwalks efforts to "revitalize" the existing strip mall by expanding the Bingo Hall and adding slot machines didn't soothe me one bit.

In a 5-3 vote, council approved the continuation of the plan, allowing it to move to the public hearing stage as well as further scrutiny by council. Councillor Linda Hepner supports the $25million plan whole-heartedly and says she feels comfortable with the bid because it calls for penny slots - pennies and nickels.

????????????????

Time for a little reality check Linda - and for those who also voted to let this go further along. I bet you don't get out much in Newton to actually know what the immediate area is like around the mall, do you? Have you ever actually even been in the current facility? Good grief.

How about coming for a walk with me so I can show you first-hand what is at stake. I invite all the councillors along for a little schooling.

Right behind the Mall is a BC housing subsidized housing complex - a large one. It's old, run-down, and prostitutes, drug addicts, and children all wander the grounds in"harmony". Many, many single moms with problems live there. It's not a pretty site. There are also two well-known crack houses right behind the mall area. There are several low-income apartment buildings.

Within a half block is a closed and abandoned gas station where street people congregate and reside overnight.

Two blocks to the south is large homeless shelter, and three well-known low-cost motels where street walkers ply their trade are right across from it. Two blocks to the north is a recycling bottle depot, where at night after closing, the local hookers and addicts hang out to stay warm.

Within three blocks of the current and proposed facility, there are 3 pawn shops. Three.

There are also 4 cheque cashing facilities with extended hours. Within 4 blocks, there is a parole office, 5 pubs and attached cold beer and wine stores, and the extremely dicey Newton Bus Loop.

I'm told , but have been unable to confirm, that the pharmacy at the local Safeway is the local methadone dispensing facility.

Do you see where I'm going with all this? All of the above businesses and homes are within a short walk of the proposed facility. This is clearly not a neighbourhood where the residents are brimming with hope. One can already see obviously troubled residents in the bingo hall, trying to win it big, spending god knows what kind of money they don't really have to spare.

How can anyone say they honestly feel comfortable because its only penny and nickel slots? How ?

Do you think for one minute that every down and out bum, addict and hooker isn't going to be in there plugging those machines with their scrounged up pennies and nickels, hoping to score $10 dollars for their next fix, some food, or a pack of cigarettes? You're selling false hope, and nothing more. Its not going to be people with money in this facility, council, its going to be the people who really don't have it to spare. The people who cant feed themselves or their kids, the people who have already lost all hope and are hoping to hit it big with one more push of the button.

You will have to excuse my impertinence , but since when was it councils business to sell false hope in exchange for a better looking facility? At one time, council fought against slot machines, but yet you seem so willing to host the thought now - whats changed?

Ahhh..... I think I smell money... 10% of all profits from the slots? I hope you plan to spend it all on RCMP, because we are going to need them even more than we do now after slots are installed. You think Joe Blow isn't going to breaking into even more cars for some change or CD's he can sell for quick cash? HA!

You are fooling yourself if you truly believe its going to make the neighbourhood better. I think besides the fact that the building will undergo cosmetic improvements, the profits are obviously the big selling point for Mayor and council, not the reality of what goes on after slots are installed.

If you really want to do something to help save the neighbourhood, how about starting with the basics.

Order those owners of abandoned buildings to knock them down instead of leaving them as gathering places for crime and drugs. Clean up the streets, and start approving some projects that really will change the entire area for better. Meet with BC Housing and make them accountable for their atrocious property. Low income doesn't have to mean slum, and it shouldn't. These residents need help, not slot machines.

Haven't any of you noticed all the security guards the local businesses have to hire to protect their staff and patrons? Not just one, sometimes two and three. What does this tell you? We need more policing. We need it badly, in this area.

Boardwalk Entertainment claims to have so much public support, and I bet they do- from all the current bingo players who already use the current facility. The place is busy all the time, and sadly enough, its almost entirely the same people who I speak of above. No money to spare, and yet day in and day out, there they are.

Perhaps we cant force someone into detox who is on drugs, perhaps we cant turn around the life of every street person, but you can prevent this neighbourhood from becoming worse than it already is, for those who actually care and live here.

Dont provide yet another avenue for petty crime, addiction and hopelessness. For those on council who do not live with the realities of this neighbourhood, please think about this.

You might feel good about supporting this proposal now, because you don't actually live here, or have to deal with the consequences, but what will you do when the revitalization you seek, doesn't magically appear when those slot machines are installed?

How will you feel then? Will the percentage of profits you retain from the proceeds allow you to sleep better at night? I hope you will, because I know I won't be able to.

A 25-year-old Fredericton man is behind bars today after surrendering to police.

His crime?

Skateboarding on the streets.

Lee Breen was originally ticketed in the summer of 2007 for skateboarding on the streets of Fredericton. This was after receiving several warnings about Bylaw S-9, which makes it illegal to use a sled, toboggan, wagon or skateboard on the streets of New Brunswick's capital.

"I was skating on King St. in Fredericton (and) was actually going to buy my brother a skateboard helmet," he said yesterday. "(When) I saw the police car, I jumped off my board. The officer who pulled over and approached me had actually given me a warning the day before." (news)

What does this say about our culture?

Federal prosecutors have unsealed an indictment, that alleges a man and woman of training the woman's child to be a dominatrix when she was 12 years old! They also sold her sexual services.

The indictment says Todd B. Barkau began training the girl in 2000 when she was 12, and forced her to engage in sex acts with him and with other men. The indictment also says Barkau forced the girl to watch pornography on the Internet as a teaching tool.

Barkau, now 35, of Niagara Falls, New York, and the 44-year-old mother of the girl were charges with a seven-count indictment. They're operation was started in Blue Springs, Mo.

"Barkau obtained control of a 12-year-old girl and he groomed, trained and forced her to become a sexual dominatrix," said attorney John Wood at a news conference in Kansas City on Monday.

The girl's mother was arrested in Dallas last Friday.

Don Ledford, a spokesman for Wood, said as far as he knew, neither defendant had been assigned counsel, and the mother's name is not being published to protect the identity of the daughter, who is now 20 years old.

Florida is one of about 20 states with no specific law prohibiting such acts. Outlawing bestiality, legislators say, would make it easier for law enforcement officials and prosecutors to clamp down on sexual abuse of animals. Since 2001, there have been at least a dozen documented cases in Florida.

This spring, state Sen. Nan Rich, D-Weston, filed legislation aimed at preventing anyone from knowingly committing bestiality, knowingly causing or aiding another person to have sex with an animal, or knowingly permitting sex with an animal. Rich filed the legislation, in part, because she has seen academic evidence that there is a direct correlation between animal abuse and child abuse. The legislation passed one legislative committee.

Rich said the struggle for passage of the legislation centers on the taboo subject and graphic nature of the acts.

"I think people are just uncomfortable with the subject matter," she said Wednesday. "It's just unfortunate that there's just not more ways to prosecute these atrocious acts, because there is so much evidence that they are an indicator of other sexual deviant crimes."

The Washington Post released a story today concerning yet another a disturbing practice that our government has quietly added to its repertoire: drugging deportees against their will with powerful anti-psychotics such as Haldol... all without a court order. Citizens or no, this practice is simply despicable, especially the seeming causal regularity of it. Many former victims of the Soviet Union will remember its own draconian use of Haldol on political dissidents.

The sad fact of the matter, however, is that the legal status of this technique is ambiguous. But for the doctors and nurses involved in these cases, things are a little more clear: they should lose their licenses to practice medicine. Practices like these simply are not in compliance with the ethical standards required to practice medicine in this country. The article doesn't name names, but they should be fairly easy to figure out via FOIA requests.

I wrote before about one of the several encounters I've had with Nutters on South Great Georges Street especially around Dunne's Stores; but up til recently I've sort of accepted that it's me. I attract nutters, I really do. If there is a sad little old man ready to talk about the ghost in his attic or a neurotic lady of a certain age determined to discuss the sexual mores of today's teenagers they seek me out like ticks smelling blood. If anyone is going to catch the eye and subsequently the ire of the druggie ranting on the street, it'll be me. But recently I'm beginning to wonder if it's all my fault.

Yesterday in Dunne's I had to fend off the woman at the salad counter who took offence at my being there in front of her, and who poked me in the back and snarled at me to move so she could "look at the salads"; the Drunk De Jour, a hulking beast wandering around in stinking clothes clutching a can while security and counter staff alike tried to avoid making eye contact with either him or the customers fleeing out of his way; and the two drunks roaring at each other outside the main entrance. And it's not as if Georges St. is a particularly bad area. There are fabulous streets off it as well, Like Stephen's Street and Exchequer St where you'll rarely hear so much as a raised voice.

However last Saturday on Aungier St began with two unfortunate Garda trying to restrain four of the area's most vile and violent drunks and ended with a fist fight between a drunken English stag group and some of the local skangers, also drunk.

The Salvation Army wet hostel nearby has of course created most of this problem - it comes to something when the unfortunate homeless for whose sake the hostel was - ostensibly- built, tell you they are too afraid of the drunks using it to go anywhere near the place. The drunks incidentally are not homeless, they have council houses outside the city centre but they travel in on their giros to drink and socialize. The SA hostel is their preferred city break hotel.

But I do suspect that Georges St and in particular that Dunnes has been built over a Hellmouth. it's the only real explanation.

Tonight has been a constant hissing in here, for the last couple of hours. So guess am upsetting someone on one of my blogs, as have a couple. My eyes are also burning and very dry. Went for a short walk couple hours ago, 9pm to get away from it. I'd make a bet if people suffering from tinnitus could go for a walk and have it stop like that, all the tinnitus sufferers in the world would be doing a lot more walking. Anyway it was cold out there so didn't stay long. At least put a stop to it for a little while. But back on when came inside. Nearly passed out about half hour after that. Room started swimming around. My dog must be being affected also, as he was incredibly restless earlier, and couple of times barked, but there was no one there, well no one in sight anyway, its dark now. A little while ago he started choking a bit, so rubbed his throat for him for awhile, and was ok.

Yesterday a leading baby killer organization ,known as NARAL, endorsed Barack Obama. This shows that hardcore liberals support him because he agrees with their views. This endorsement will cost him millions of votes in the general election.

Democrats have a hard time dealing with reality. The vast majority of Americans believe in the Right To Life. They are opposed to abortion and refuse to vote for a candidate that favors killing unborn children. Regardless these politicians continue to except the support of radical pro abortion organizations.

Here is a little secret. Democrats who are Pro Life have a good chance of being elected. In fact Travis Childers (D) is now our U.S. Congressman. He shared our values and was elected.

Barack Obama is to liberal to win in my neck of the woods. That being the Deep South and the Republic Of Mississippi. Furthermore he will have a poor showing in the Great Plains because he is out of touch with the mainstream. To bad Gene Taylor (D) and Travis Childers (D) aren't running for President.

Or perhaps I should have titled this Shouldn't the burqa be banned in public? On saturday May 3, 2008 Philadelphia Police Sergeant Stephen Liczbonski was murdered. The robbery was committed by 3 men dressed in female Muslim garments. Here is a picture from the surveilance camera in the Shop Rite store where the Bank of America branch was located.

There were 3 African American men involved. I haven't been able to find if they were Muslim or not but the possibility certainly exists. I have found that this is not the only case of crimes being committed by men dressed in female Muslim garb. Sergeant Liczbinski is survived by his wife and 3 children and was a 12 year veteran of the Philadelphia Police Department. This is very sad. Sergeant Liczbinski was off duty at the time of his murder. This should serve as a "politically correct" wake up call for us all. To hell with political correctness.
