In Second Life il robot potrebbe assumere forme diverse dalle sembianze umane.

Nota 5.

Future Worlds: Globalisation and Intertextuality in Blade Runner

Blade Runner (1982)
The future world, 2019 LA, of Blade Runner is a cosmopolitan “global village

Blade Runner (1982)

The future world, 2019 LA, of Blade Runner is a cosmopolitan “global village”. This is communicated by the use of bi-lingual advertising signs: Coca-cola sits amongst neon Japanese symbols. Although Coca-cola is an American symbol that is saturated world wide the use of it sat against the Japanese iconography communicates the sense of lost identity. While Deckard sits eating his Japanese food two “Blade Runner” cops stand behind him, and although we are in LA they speak in a foreign language to Deckard who only understands English. He must get the noodle stand owner to translate for him. The fact that an agent of the central authority, the Police, speaks in Japanese rather than English in LA signifies the state of globalisation. The identity that is lost is the local provincial aspects of countries. Instead of an American or Japanese culture we see a cross-breed intertextual mix that produces it own new identity. As I mentioned in my previous post concerning the Postmodern nature of Blade Runner this concept of intertextuality and pastiche culture is important in communicating a distinct future world. Blade Runner asks questions about individuality and authenticity [I will write a post about Blade Runner with the aim to explore the postmodern concept of cyborg ] and the intertextual nature of Blade Runner creates a future world where people have become replicants of imagery and images that “used” to signify something individual but now have become tired. Instead of Deckard being an individual he has become a “replicant” of the film noir detective in his trench coat and hard-boiled character. Similarly Rachel has become the prototypical Femme Fatal, dressed in dark, commanding screen presence and continuously smoking.

The future world social structures are communicated in Blade Runner by the opposition of setting, as in Total Recall and Running Man. The internal shots of the headquarters of the Tyrell corp. are luscious and extraordinary while the city streets are dark and rain is continuously falling. As in Total Recall the opposition of two colours can communicate an atmosphere that coincides with the location. In Total Recall the use of red and whites opposed each other and communicated a mood and sense of place. In Blade Runner the use of dark-blues communicate a sense of run-down dirty atmosphere while golds and yellows create a warm glow that surrounded the upper echelons of the Tyrell corp.

Canada:	Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Winnipeg
Norte America: Chicago, Los Angeles
Internacional: Amsterdam, Korea

World's first ever Cyborg, Professor Kevin Warwick, Department of Cybernetics, University of Reading, is just six to eight years away from another implant, this time a brain implant.

This experiment would be in the area of bi-directional communication. Currently the investigation process is on for brain-computer links, in particular an implant into the brain, which acts bi-directionally.

As Warwick tells, "This probably will mean retraining neurons within the brain to alter their basic functioning. The main reason here would be for bi-directional communication. Clearly this is different to space projects. I believe it is far more important as it really changes what it means to be human."

In the year 1998, Professor Kevin Warwick and his team at the department of Cybernetics, University of Reading had underwent an operation to surgically implant a silicon chip transponder in his forearm that allowed a computer to monitor him as he moved through halls and offices of the Department of Cybernetics using a unique identifying signal emitted by the implanted chip and also allowed him to operate doors, lights, heaters and other computers without lifting a finger.

The second phase of the experiment Project Cyborg 2.0 got underway in March 2002 with an aim of studying how a new implant could send signals back and forth between Warwick's nervous system and a computer.

His team is presently busy with the rat brain project, a biological robot controlled by a blob of rat brain created by the scientists. The project is at an interesting turn as it moves on to study memories vis-à-vis brain.

"We are now about to investigate how memories manifest themselves in the brain – hopefully this will give us some leverage in dealing with Alzheimer's disease," shares Warwick.

The project entails a wheeled machine wirelessly linked to a bundle of neurons kept at body temperature in a sterile cabinet while signals from the "brain" allow the robot to steer left or right to avoid objects in its path.

Similar experiments about developing robots with living brains made from cultured cells are underway with other scientists across the world too like the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, US and the SymbioticA Fish And Chips project or the 'whiskered' rat robot project on touch technology by at multinational BIOTACT project, with research teams like Weizmann Institute of Science's Neurobiology Department.

Professor Kevin Warwick who pioneered the merging of biology and robotics by conducting the first "cyborg" experiments on him is upbeat about this one. "The rat brain project is presently extremely successful – we are able to grow a brain of 100,000 brain cells and we have it driving a robot around".

This has probably already been done, but I don't know.

Ever since I was a little kid, I would have this weird vision of me being "not human." And I obviously didn't believe it was true. I'd imagine it as if I was a robot, but I didn't know it. Maybe robot's not the proper term. Maybe cyborg, or something.

Anyway, last night I was thinking how great of a story that could be. What if a teenager somehow, found out he wasn't really his parents child, physically, but he was a cyborg.

I know, I'm a little out there, but this is just my sci-fi side. LOL

This was a fantastic anniversary issue and a real treat to any fans of the Titans. We look back at different era of the titans history as well as reminisce on the life of Bart Allen, all along setting up the new arc and the return of the Titans of Tommorrow...John's best arc on this book. So I am glad they are coming back. McKeever's run has started off with a bang! Don't you just love that cover!

Art by Ale Garza

Not sure what to think of this...it's not bad and I like the hints to the future of the Teen Titans...and the idea that Bart and Connor will be alive in the future. But I think the art makes it less enjoyable....I really miss McKone and Tony Daniel's work on this title.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #52
Art by Jamal Igle

Awesome ending spread there...it is fun to see these glimpses of possible future titans. This is actually the second time I have read this arc and I must say it reads much better this time around. Not to mention Igle's art is fantastic this issue.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #53
Written by Sean McKeever
Art by Eddy Barrows

The Titans Army is pretty bad ass....I love that Cassandra Cain is the Batwoman of the future and that Misfit is Huntress (and still yelling Dark Vengeance!) but the coloring was quite off on her hair, along with Aquawoman's. Anyways, there have been way too many artists on this one arc.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #54
Art by Eddy Barrows, Joe Prado, and Greg Tocchini

Okay who else is really looking forward to a Miss Martian/Robin romance. Much better then Wonder Girl and Robin which seems kindve incestuous to me and it would parallel the relationship between Starfire and Nightwing. Anyways, this was a nice ending to this issue. I like that Blue Beetle, Supergirl, and the Ravager are the ones who will one day oppose the Titans Army. I have to say this arc was not as good as John's Titans of Tomorrow arc....but it was still well-written and fun.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #55

I liked this in-between story. Robin and Wonder Girl end their romance....thank God. And Supergirl leaves the team, sad because I was actually liking her on the team. Poor Kid Devil is treated like crap throughout this issue...even by Robin. I wish Ingle was the regular artist on this title.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #56
Art by Eddy Barrows

Okay I don't know why Robin and everyone are being so mean to Kid Devil...it seems kinda out of character. I am intrigued by the Terror Titans and this issue had a lot of funny moments, especailly when Kid Devil throws the party at the tower. McKeever's run on this title is seriously underrated.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #57
Written by Sean McKeever
Art by Eddy Barrows

I like that Ravager is worried about Kid Devil....but Wonder Girl really comes off as a bitch in this issue. I mean she has a right to not completely trust Rose but come on. The ending was pretty crazy....I am not sure what happened to the tower.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #58

I really liked the art this issue but why the hell can't Eddy Barrows stay for more then a couple issues! This story was great because it features mostly Miss Martian who really deserves more attention as she is a great character. She has the battling her dark side aspect of Raven and the naivety of Starfire that makes her the perfect fit for the Titans. Good issue.

Teen Titans (Volume 3) #59

Clock King is pretty scary and the Dark Side Club is just as so. This issue was good but I feel this arc is a little long altogether. I think Barrows's art reached an all-time high with this issue. Very nice stuff.
Teen Titans (Volume 3) #60

Looks like Ravager is leaving the team...no thanks to Wonder Girl's bitchiness....although the more I think about it the more I realize I would be hesitant about having a known killer on the team as well. This Terror Titans arc was good and it's always fun to see new villains introduced for the Titans but it ran a little long.

This was a sweet issue highlighting the relationship between Blue Beetle and welll....Red Devil. Kid Devil switches his name to Red Devil in this issue. I am not sure that I like the name...Kid Devil just flows better but I can deal with it. I like the bond formed between the two reluctant team mates. Good stuff.

Okay that was just fucking incredibly disturbing!!! I expected a sweet story about a cute god instead I got that before he transformed and slaughtered Wendy and Marvin. Not going to lie, I was pissed after reading this the first time. Miss Martian leaves the team and Wendy and Marvin who have been totally underused are now killed. What the hell right?! This seems like a Dan Didio idea to me. But on the second read-through, it's actually pretty good and I am hoping McKeever has a good reason for killing off Wendy and Marvin, if they are in fact dead.

This issue was very decompressed...I don't feel like much happened accept Bombshell fought the military and the Teen Titans and Wonder Girl has a headache. What the hell! I am glad to see that Wendy is alive, I wish I could say the same for Marvin though. I have the feeling they are setting Wendy up to become a metahuman/hero. I am not sure. Miss Martian is on the cover for some reason despite not being o nthe team anymore.

It has taken a whole year - but London mayor Boris Johnson has finally got his own back on Arnold Schwarzenegger.

As he was waiting to address last year's Tory conference via video link, the California Governor seemed highly amused by Mr Johnson's speaking style.

In a a clip which became a hit on YouTube, he can be heard whispering to aides about Mr Johnson "fumbling".

But now the London mayor has had the last the laugh, describing "Arnie" as a "monosyllabic Austrian cyborg".

The perfect way to start a Monday morning. I do, however, think it's a little early to claim that Boris has had the last laugh. There's no telling what the monosyllabic Austrian cyborg might do next.

Not to worry, though, I'm sure Boris will be more than a match... as long as it doesn't get physical...

Last night’s dreams were very realistic. I was in some sort of training camp in a post apoca

Last night's dreams were very realistic. I was in some sort of training camp in a post apocalyptic era. The world had begun to rebuild and new governments were forming. The training camp I was in was for a military compound where I was a "drill sergeant", if you will.

It was a stormy night, with lightning striking the ground every two to three seconds, and I was standing on a terrace overlooking a valley, watching the storm.

But besides the thunder, there were other loud noises. The sounds of missiles whistling across the sky and striking the ground, almost drowned out by the lightning. A man standing next to me saw the explosions, and asked me what they were. I calmly explained to him that these were part of a training exercise and there was nothing to be concerned about. A new missile prototype.

shift

I was now standing in an armory, where all of the compounds' weapons were stored. Rifles, Machine guns, mortars and rockets. They ranged from all sizes and weight, but were all designed for one thing. To destroy.

Suddenly there was a loud crashing sound and I ran towards the source. In one of the bays, a young recruit had dropped a missile from the forklift and another was pinned beneath it. The thing weighed almost a ton, and I could clearly his legs had been crushed beneath it. The cries that ensued from the man made the hair on the back of my neck stand. He almost sounded like... a pig squealing.

I radioed for the medic squad to come down here immediately. Within three seconds the doors opened and two helpers arrived, running in to the aide of the pinned man. These two weren't ordinary individuals. They were cyborgs, mostly machine and somewhat human. With ease, the two picked up the missile and placed it back on the forklift, and turned to the leg crushed man. I should say boy, he wasn't much older than 18. His legs were ruined, and would need to be amputated and would most likely be fitted with machined legs. That's what happened in this day and age; if you lost something, it was replaced. That's what happened to the cyborgs. They were severely maimed and had lost all of their limbs and some of their torsos during battle. But now with their mechanical medical miracles, they were good as new. Better than new actually, since these parts were of the highest grade and would outlast their own lives. If they were to die, the parts would be recycled to the next person that needed them. For some reason this made me think of playing with Lego's when I was a child.

I followed the helpers to medical and began to watch the entire process of the leg replacement. With as much blood as the recruit had lost and the pain he was in, I was surprised he was still awake. This one would be a great soldier.

What remained of his legs were completely numbed so he would not feel the process. Within three more seconds the crushed and maimed parts of his legs were severed from his body, and the arteries and vessels were temporarily sealed and rerouted. The machine legs would not require blood, only his nerve fibers. Watching this process was like watching one of those robot arms build a car, from long ago. The machines fixing him were exact, precise, with no room for error and thus never made one. Next the ultra light-weight replacement legs came in and they were positioned in front of his. The recruit, no longer in pain, watched with amusement.

A machine re-opened the sutures on his stumped legs and exposed the bone. Next, bringing the new leg towards the bone it began to apply a sort of liquid metal, almost like mercury. But once it came in contact with the bone and the metal femur it began to harden. First it soaked partly into the bone and then it solidified, doing the same with the bio-metal leg. Then the machine opened his damaged thigh the rest of the way and began to wrap the remaining skin around the new leg, and followed this by injecting another liquid around the seams. This is where the magic really happened. This liquid had thousands of nanites, each programmed to read the signals travelling through the nerve endings, and then place those nerves appropiately where they needed to be on the bio-metal leg. During this process the recruit had to flex different parts of his lower legs (even though it's not there, you still remember how) and the nanites did their thing. One leg done, in 10 minutes. The recruit sat in amazement as he watched his new toes flexing while the machines did the same to his other leg. When he could put clothes on again, no one would be able to tell. And the metal used in these limb replacements were undetectable, so he wouldn't set off alarms everywhere he went.

I heard something metal clink and I looked down. My right hand had bumped into a steam pipe, resulting in the metallic noise. My hand was replaced too. It moved and responded just like a real hand, but I couldn't feel anything with it. That process hadn't been entirely perfected yet. That had it's good points too. If the recruit were to be shot in the legs, he would never feel it. He would keep going, being able to complete his mission and be repaired later if need be.

The young man on the operating table turned his head towards me, behind the glass, and smiled. I smiled at the corner of my mouth and saluted him, with my machined hand.

shift

My hand was bleeding profusely. Wait, didn't I have a mech-hand? No, this was a different setting. There was no borg-esque technology here. I looked at my hand again and saw that my the tip of ring finger had been almost completely crushed. Great! I thought. Now what? But I found I was already sitting in some doctors office with my hand in front of me on a table, ready to be operated on. What a drag. What would my girlfriend think? Wait, what girlfriend? I have one? I shook my head. I watched as the doctor began to remove the maimed parts of the finger and I began to hear a beeping. Deep in my subconcious I knew what this meant. But I didn't want to leave. And my brain really didn't give two shits about it either. I began to wake up to my phone beeping and vibrating.

Sigh.

I am having an exceedingly difficult time figuring out a way to start this blog update– in par

I am having an exceedingly difficult time figuring out a way to start this blog update-- in part, it’s the intense fatigue from all computer-related activity. I’m sick of staring at my laptop and my desktop and just want to lie down and stare at the sky/ceiling/underside of whatever large piece of furniture I can find to hide under. It’s been an excruciating week what with a proposal deadline to meet, two classes to prep, and many assignments to think up/write/design. The proposal especially took it out of me. Those damn things always do. As I communed with my computer for hours and hours, eschewing natural light, sleep and meals involving plates, my thoughts would frequently come back to the same futile places. Namely:

“Ummm, is it even possible to finish all this work in time?”

“Why didn’t I plan ahead and get this done earlier?”

“Am I even writing English anymore?”

“I am so tired; can’t I sleep now?”

“What happens if I DON’T finish all of this stuff?”

“Isn’t it just going to get worse?”

While I did manage to pound it all out, I can’t even guess at what suffered in terms of quality. I put my proposal in my chair’s paws (Top Dawg) on Wednesday afternoon so he could take it home and review it before signing off on it. He found one typo and proclaimed the proposal otherwise “fine” in a very dry and unrevealing tone. That’s all I’ve got in the way of feedback for now.

I knew better than to expect my “A” game in a week where volume of work is so heavy, but nonetheless, it is a little embarrassing to get caught producing things which are not up to one’s usual standards. Case in point, I administered my second on-line quiz this week (no thanks to you D2L-- you continue to be an overwhelmingly RIDICULOUS program and I have my eye on you). Because I wrote the questions and set it up the day before it went live, I was rushed and didn’t proofread.

A couple of typos (three!) is not a big deal, but I fracked up royally by setting the answer key incorrectly on one of the questions, resulting in several (ok, three) panicked students contacting me. It’s all fixed and amended, but embarrassing, no? I wish I was presenting myself in a more polished fashion, one in which I could create an impression (illusion?) of infallibility. There goes that wish...

But all that aside, I am just so very glad that the week is over, that I am still standing (though I hurt, really, and am worried that treating myself this way is not good for my health). When the assistant chair wandered in and tried to make small-talk with me on Wednesday, I realized that the sound of my own voice was very alien to me as I’d barely spoken to anyone for two days (barring phone conversations with the ever supportive Mr. Rottweiler, and an excited C. who shared the news of her engagement over the phone with me on Monday night-- HUZZAH!). I had definitely barely spoken to anyone in person for two days.

On Thursday night, as I staggered out of my afternoon class and started dealing with worried quiz takers, I decided to see if Schnauzer and her husband were free for dinner and drinks. She was happy that I crawled out of my muck of work, as we seem to be on track with a regular habit of going out on Thursday nights, and she thought we wouldn’t make it this week as a result of my zombified state and upcoming travel. (I caught a 5:10 AM flight and am on the plane right at this very moment). Though tired, I wanted to speak to someone just to feel like a social animal again (no offense to my computers-- but I was sick of being a cyborg). We had a nice dinner which, incidentally, ended abruptly when some genius sitting at the bar tried to light a cigarette with their friend’s pepper spray, which they mistook for a lighter. Coughing and sputtering with our lips and eyes on fire, we stumbled out of the restaurant and into the night. So my fellow academic denizens, I am tired, wrung out, a little chagrined, and, well, slightly peppery.

Magandang hapon! Good afternoon from Manila!

As you read this piece, please take a cursory glance at yourself. For you are among the last humans of the non-chipped prototype. We non-chipped humans’ lifeline will soon end, as we are only co-terminus with ‘late’ capitalism.

‘Late’ capitalism will crash down into total destruction. As already advanced in some previous articles, ‘late’ capitalism or ‘the system’ is now DEAD. No more can this system be revived, it is beyond repair. What you see, feel, smell, sense right now as ‘the system’ is merely a semblance of a once thriving and growing system of post-war interventionist capitalism, whose international trade conduct was partly regulated by fixed exchange rate and a gold standard. The reality you see today is only illusory, ‘virtual reality’ of a once mighty and envious system. To repeat, IT IS DEAD!

This terminal phase of capitalism will be marked by aggressive attempts to revive it. During these aggressive attempts (aggressive = World War III, synarchy, destruction of nations) the prototype of the future human is being experimented on in laboratories of the North. That prototype will be constructed, based on the principles of Phase 3 Cybernetics. To familiarize yourself with cybernetic’s phases, note this briefer:

Phase I: Perfecting and packaging systems theory in simplified form, made the computer possible.

Phase II: Integration theory made possible the integration of the computer to the machine, producing (a) automation and (b) artificial intelligence or AI. Simultaneous with nano-technology.

Phase III: The machine-human organism divide will be broken, thus enabling the creation of the ‘cyborg’ or cybernetic organism. This is integration of mathematics, systems theory, bioinformatics, biotechnology, infotech, sociobiomedicine, psychology, and bio-physics.

Phase IV: Further advancements in cybernetic principles will enable the infusion of intelligence into machines. Cyber-sentinels (machine cops, armies) for Earth and space mission purposes will arise. These prototypes can fly space ships across vast spaces, and conduct R&D in heavenly bodies of choice destination.

Let me stop at that point. Cybernetics can still go a long way, up to that point where computers as huge as a 3-million square mile country can be created. That’s as big as Canada, or China, or the USA of today. Bigger and bigger machines (robots) will be created which, incidentally, will be more unstable…But let me stop here.

In its future revived form, capitalism will take off as the new-generation ‘technotronic’ capitalism. Prior to the full galvanization of the new system, a transition period will be experienced. During that period, which could last for a quarter of a century, the micro-chipping of humans will have been perfected. That microchipping or simply chipping of humans will enable the production of the hybrid human variety.

That hybrid variety is in fact being experimented today. The Verizon Corp, a gigantic company based in the USA, has been given the franchise to research, develop, and install (using known biomedical operations, whether surgery or mere intravenous means) prototypes called the VeriChip. Couples of rationalizations were advanced in order to justify the VeriChip mandate. Among the supposed advantages are that of (a) getting easily tracked so that cuts down the possibility of retrieval if one gets lost along the way home or travel to work, and (b) tracking or monitoring one’s health and wellness condition.

As early as the last quarter of the 20th century, the divide between sanity and madness, between ‘good’ reasons and demonic reasons, were already shattered. Rational economics gave way to mad economics, and so on. Likewise was shattered the divide between the visible benefits of chipping humans and the invisible benefits to the ‘new world order’ of controlling humans. Do take note of these developments, as we’re moving in future contexts where rationality and madness’ synthesis will be perfected even more. Integration theory works wondrously for the oligarchic system, remember.

Those chips that will be implanted in you, in case you are among those who volunteered, can indeed be for your personal benefits. But never make the presumption that the chips won’t be used to at least build an intelligence dossier on you. The information mega-databases are already existing today in the USA and EU, so right at this juncture it is facile to keep track of people at least. How those chips will be convertible for purposes of mutating you into a Manchurian Candidate or MC is the current R&D problem of the scientists involved in them.

In a post-War (World War III) scenario, when nations will have been abolished save for some few exceptions, more ‘final solution’ to the demographic dilemma (of ‘overpopulation’) will be executed, thus bringing down population to probably as low as 2 Billion people by 2050. Remember that World War III will take as long as 30 years, it could be a new 30 Years War, so if this coming war will begin in 2009, then expect it to end around 2039.

Now, what is important for that figure of 2 Billion world population, which the global oligarchy has already projected, is that it is a more manageable, controllable population. Chipping all 2 billion people remnants of the old population will be very easy by then. Part of the conditions for reconstruction, reparations, and succeeding prosperous life for the individual would be to chip him/her.

Thus shall be born the population of MCs, who will be quasi-autonomous individuals. The MC can still think for himself/herself, though many facets of the MC’s behavior will be modified. And, behavior modification will be enabled chiefly precisely because of the chips inside one’s body, thus making trainings and/or capacity building less costly. Life span will also increase, as the chips will have the effect of monitoring ailments quickly, and intervention will be easier than today. Primary health care will be done right on the computer and will be quick, instead of the tedious and protracted processes that we clinically undergo today.

However that hybrid prototype, which we will label HYBRID for simplification, will only be the transitory prototype as the ‘final prototype’ will be perfected in the labs. That final prototype, the CYBORG (1st generation), will be a radically different variety altogether from the hybrids whom they will replace. Being one whose personality, chromosomal structure, and capability grids will be fully programmed via advanced computer prototypes and advanced biomedical-sociobehavioral expertise and intervention methods, the CYBORG will be one of longer life span (past 100 years), longer productivity (at least 75 years of productive utility), higher intelligence (mental, emotional, related intelligences all programmed), higher knowledge-absorptive capacity (mental files will be erasable, new knowledge can be uploaded to the brain via computers), and better health (lessening or eliminating health care costs) than the HYBRID.

So, fellows on Earth, let’s better face it, WE ARE ALL PHASE-OUT PROTOTYPES. Let’s better accept that now. Yes, capitalism can survive as already explained before, but look at where capitalism is going. In the era of full ‘technotronic’ capitalism, you will be a total chattel of the system. I don’t mean YOU today who will die in some decades ahead without the chip, I mean the YOU as the people after the war reconstruction.

For those pro-capitalist folks of the world, please don’t grieve for the death of ‘late’ capitalism. Yes, capitalism in its present form is now DEAD, but a new form will rise and replace it, thus rendering capitalism like unto a phoenix. As an ending, are you ready to be chipped today? VeriChip is waiting for thee.

[23 August 2008, Quezon City, MetroManila]
