Bu işle ilgilenenlerin bildiği gibi Upsampling yeni bir şey değil. Bir sürü DAC bu işi içindeki elektronik devreler sayesinde gerçek zamanlı olarak yapmakta. Bence ikinci seçenek daha sıhhatli.

Benzer bir soruyu daha önce de sormuştuk. "0" ve"1"leri CD den gerçek zamanlı okumak mı daha başarılı, yoksa EAC'la zaman kısıtlaması olmadan hard-disk'e aktarıp oradan bilgisayar aracılığı ile dinlemek mi? Burada da ikinci seçeneğin daha iyi olduğu gittikçe daha yaygın olarak kabul görüyor.

Bu arada dikkatimi çekti, Weiss'in Saracon adlı bizim beleş r8brain benzeri bir yazılımı varmış. Sitesinden bakabilirsiniz. Tabii oldukça pahalı bir yazılım olduğu kesin.

Gelelim son izlenimlerime. Dosyalara upsampling işlemi uyguladıktan sonra oluşan kalite "24bit Stüdyo Master" kayıtlar ve CD'lerden çevrilen FLAC dosyaların arasında biryerlerde oldu.

Izlenimlerime birkaç ekleme daha yapayım:

• Çeşitli sample rate'leri denedim ama bence en başarılı çevirim 24bit/88.2kHz ile oldu. 24/176.4'ü de denemek isterdim ama r8brain yazılımının bu seçeneği maalesef yok. 176.4'de 44.1'in tam sayı katı olduğu için başarı şansı büyüktü.

• Detaylarda ve dinamikte 16bit FLAC'lara göre bariz iyileşme var.

• Genel olarak baslarda bir artış oldu. Hatta çok nadir olarak bazı parçalarda fazla bas oluşup rahatsız edici olunca o parçayı silip tekrar 16 bit'lik orjinalini geri yükledim.

• Normal olarak arka planda kalan enstrümanlar biraz ön plana çıktı ve daha iyi duyulur oldu. Avantaj mı? Bana göre evet, ben beğendim ama zevkler değişiktir, beğenmeyen olabilir tabii.

• Senfonik klasik müzikte bazen çok iyi netice vermedi ama genellikle başarılıydı. En iyi sonuçlar Jazz ve Latin vokal ağırlıklı slow parçalarda oldu. Klasik müzikte ise keman, çello, piyano ağırlıklı parçalarda da başarı oranı çok iyiydi.

• Bu işe kalkışacaksanız diskinizde "çevireceğiniz albüm sayısı x 1GB" gibi yer açın. Yani büyük ihtimalle sizi bilgisayar mağazasına bir ziyaret bekliyor

Sonuç olarak "uğraşmaya değer mi" derseniz, kesinlikle evet derim. Biraz vakit alıcı bir çevirim şekli ama sonuçta bu işi bir kere yapacaksınız. Ben 60 civarında şu anda en çok dinlediğim CD'yi 24/88.2 FLAC'e çevirdim ve keyifle dinliyorum. Vakit oldukça da yenilerini ekliyorum.

Tabii burada yazdıklarım subjektif değerlendirmeler, kişiden kişiye ve sistemden sisteme değişir.

Bir deneyip dinleyin derim. Belki bize beğendiğimiz albümlerin Stüdyo Master Kayıtları çıkıncaya kadar bize bir alternatif sunar, kim bilir!!!

These men and those listed below are wanted for winning numerous football championships and playing some of the finest football the greater Dundalk area has ever seen. They were well known for evading opposing team tacklers and fleeing from scrimmage to score touchdowns.

It seems as though football has always been a huge part of the Dundalk and Sparrows Point Fall scene. Opposition between the two communities was intent and hard fought during the Dundalk Bowl years between Norris A.C. (Dundalk) and Jones Creek Lodge Forest (J. & L. – Edgemere) games beginning in the late thirties and extending up to the beginning of the war years in the early forties. The games were equally hard fought during the Steel Bowl era beginning in the mid-forties through the seventies between Dundalk and Sparrows Point.

However, the two communities and surrounding areas came together after the World War II veterans came home to formulate the Dundalk Athletic Club Semi-pro football team. Many of the players that were so prevalent during the Dundalk Bowl era like John Paulini, Frank Usher, Moose Green, Bob Kelly, Roy Bands, Cliff Barton, Geno-Jules & lou Franks played together again for the A.C.

Unfortunately, at least one of the players, like Ralph “Pee Wee” Darr would not return to the gridiron as a player because of a sustained injury he received during the war. “Pee Wee” Darr was mentioned often in Kimbel “Scoop” Oelke’s exciting weekly sports articles in the “Community Press and Baltimore Countian,” during the Dundalk Bowl days. In 1938, “Blasting away at the J. & L. line in the opening quarter, Norris led by Pee Wee Darr and Tony Kinel kept the play in the J. & L. sector----.” “Ralph Pee Wee Darr and Paul Kortisses were chosen as outstanding players for their respective teams.” In 1940, “Ralph Darr knifed 10 yards through the J. & L. line, as the final minutes ticked away, for the lone touchdown.” In 1941, “Geno Franks and Ralph Darr were consistent ground gainers and played above average ball.” Ralph “Pee Wee” Darr was unable to participate on the field with the Dundalk A.C. team because of loss of his leg in the closing hours of the war in Germany, but he was consistently on the team sidelines coaching and cheering his fellow Dundalkians on to victory.

The D. A. C. veterans were augmented by an infusion of players graduating from the ranks of the Steel Bowl years such as Ronnie Binetti, Joe Buckholtz, Russ Coleman, Jack & Bill Goodman, John Haggerty, Guy Marcum, Dave Masincupp, Jack McGinty, Jim & Tom Moskos, Vic Paccura, Jim Peterka, Bob Pluchak, Bunky Rainer and Ted Wagus.

A bevy of, normally rival, players from Patterson High school and the Highlandtown area joined the D. A. C. team like Mike Amenioius, Spiro Asmanius, Johhny Bish, Bob Curreri, Tom Demitrakis, Ray Glaze, Guido Iozzi, Ed Lazzeri, Ernie Maffei, Flavio Nardoni, Bob Pivek & Joe Rosori.

Along with numerous other locally talented players, the conglomeration of area football standouts formulated an outstanding, and the nearly unbeatable Dundalk Athletic Club Semi-pro Football team that won numerous championships and delighted and thrilled Dundalk crowds for over a decade. The team was only as good as their coaches, who were the best in the area including Nick Wischuck, Don Wernecke, John Pastis, John Paulini, Geno Franks and Ralph Darr.

On September 13, 2008 between 1 Pm and 6 PM, the Dundalk Athletic Club would like to bring back as many of these outstanding players along with their family and friends to revisit and reminisce over the golden years of the Dundalk Athletic Club football at a bull roast at the Dundalk Athletic Club, 7801 Seaside Drive. "Peki arkadaş burayı okuyanların çoğu müzisyen değil, bize ne faydası olacakmış" derseniz, çok faydası olacağını söyleyebilirim.

Basitçe açıklarsam bu protokol ses giriş ve çıkışlarına bağımsız olarak daha kolay bir erişim olanağı sunduğu gibi, bir giriş ve çıkış arası senkronizasyon işlemini de yaparak, binlerce dolarlık donanım yerine yazılımların kullanılabilmesini sağlar.

Windows'un sesin kalitesini düşürdüğü söylenen K-Mixer yazılımını da bypass edip sinyalleri direkt olarak ses kart/DAC'a gönderir. Yani biz müzikseverlerin keyfini arttırıcı bir yazılım olarak tanımlayabiliriz.

Teknik açıklamalar bu kadar yeter. Ben her dâim "pro-audio" ürünler kullandığım için bu ASIO denen meretle tanışmam birkaç sene öncesine uzanır. O zamanlar sadece CD'leri diske aktarır ve mp3'lerimi dinlerken ses kalitesinin daha iyi olması nedeniyle tercih etmiştim.

Şu meşhur Hi-Def müzik yaygınlaşmaya başlayınca daha önce farketmediğim bir özelliğini keşfettim.

Biliyorsunuz disklerimizde çeşitli çözünürlükte parçalar yerlerini almaya başladı. Eskiden bu iş çok daha kolaydı. Redbook standardı olan 16bit/44.1kHz parçalar elimizdeki tek çözünürlüktü. Şimdi ise 16/44.1 - 24/88.2 - 24/96 - 24/176.4 - 24/192 vs. gibi bol miktarda dosya oluşmaya başladı bile. Bu formatları uzun süre arşivimizde birlikte dinleyeceğiz gibi görünüyor.

Işte ASIO'nun faydaları burada kendini gösteriyor. Eğer DAC'ınızın ASIO sürücüsü varsa, parçalar ve çözünürlükler arası geçişlerde sample rate ayarlamaları otomatik yapılıyor. (ASIO yanlızca Windows için var)

Yoksa MAC dahil bütün işletim sistemlerinde bu ayarlamanın her seferinde elle yapılması lazım. Bize mesela Linn Akurate DS gibi çok pahalı ve anahtar teslimi gelen Audio-Server'larda olan bir özelliği de ucuza sunuyor.

Eğer çeşitli çözünürlükte müzik dinleyecekseniz ve Sample Rate'i elle ayarlamak istemiyorsanız size ASIO yolları gözüktü galiba. Tabii herşey o kadar hızlı gelişiyor ki belki yeni çıkan aletlerde benim bilmediğim özellikler ve yazılımlar eklenmiştir.

Aşağıya birkaç ekran görüntüsü koydum. Birinci resim EMU'nun kontrol panelinde 16/44.1'den 24/88.2 çözünürlükte bir parçaya geçerken alındı. Resimin sol alt kısmında "digital input status changed" yazıyor, yani Öztürkçesi yazılım yeni çözünürlüğü algılayıp ayarlarını de ona göre otomatik değiştirdi.

Ikincisi ise Foobar2000'daki ASIO ayarları. Gördüğünüz gibi 32bit kullanıyor ve tampon bellek (buffer) ayarı da isteğe göre yapılabiliyor. Benim en başarılı bulduğum ayarlar 32bit "bit dept" ve 14ms (milisaniye) tampon bellek büyüklüğü.

Pro-Audio ürünlerin en sevdiğim özellikleri bunlar, herşey isteğe göre ayarlanabiliyor. Müthiş bir kolaylık. Tabii ASIO yazılımı sadece benim kullandığım EMU'ya özgü değil. Bütün Pro-Audio ürünlerin kendi ASIO  yazılımları var.

Bu Stüdyo Master ve Hi-Def kayıtlar başımıza iş açtı.

Yaklaşık bir sene önce 24bit/96kHz kayıtlar deneme için yeni dinletiye sunulduğunda test için 2-3 tane indirmiştim. Dinleyince hayran kalmıştım ama nasılsa daha yaygınlaşmasına var diye bir köşeye atıp saklamıştım.

Sonra Linn Akurate DS dinletisi ve sonrasında görüldü ki işler hızla buraya doğru gidiyor. Derken internet üzerinden yeni satış siteleri hergün çoğalmaya başladı.

Bende birkaç albüm satın aldım ve yeni çıkan firmaların promosyon parçalarını da kaçırmadan indirdim. Şu anda yaklaşık 50 civarında Hi-Def parça arşivde kuzu kuzu yatıyor.

Problem ise bu parçaları dinledikten sonra CD'den dönüştürülmüş 16-/44.1'lik kayıtları eskisi gibi zevkle dinleyememem. Mesela bir Stravinsky Hi-Def dinledikten sonra Stravinsky'nin diğer albümleri çalmaya başlayınca oldukça yavan geliyor. Hi-Def kayıtların dinamiği, sahnesi, detayları ötekilerde kesinlikle yok.

Ne olacak o zaman? 50 parçayı hergün dinleyip dinleyip duracağız!!! Bana pek uymuyor doğrusu. Favori albümlerimizin Hi-Def kayıtları da çıkar mı, çıkmaz mı, çıkarsa ne zaman çıkar Allah bilir!!!

Derken parçaları 24bit'e çevirirsek kalitenin daha iyi olacağını okudum. Tabii burada orjinal stüdyo master'ları yakalamak mümkün değil tabii. Hedef ikisinin arası bir kalite olmalı diye düşünüp işe koyuldum.

Önce en sevdiğim 30 albüm seçip onları ilk önce 24bit/96kHz'e dönüştürdüm. Sonraki denemelerde 24bit/88.2kHz kulağıma daha iyi geldi ve dinletileri bunun üzerine yoğunlaştırdım.

Son gelinen durum şu:

1. 88.2kHz'lik dönüştürmeler bence 96kHz'liklerden daha iyi çalıyor.
2. Bir süre daha orjinal ve upsample edilmiş parçaları beraber dinleyeceğim ve eğer iyileştirmelerden %100 emin olursam arşivin hepsini 24/88.2'ye çevirebilirim.
3. Çevirim sonrası bir albüm yaklaşık 1GB büyüklüğünde oluyor. Bende de 1.400 civarında albüm olduğuna göre terabayt'lık diskler konusunda da yavaş yavaş araştırmaya başladım.

Yeni fikirler oluştukça eklemeler yaparım.

Ammaa albümün satış fiyatı kemiksiz 45$ + navlun, yani çok kazık.

Açıkçası çok merak etmeme rağmen paraya kıyıpta sipariş vermedim.

Efenim sonra 2L sitesinden promosyon 24/96 dosyalarını indirirken dikkatimi bir format çekti. Dosyanın açıklamasında "Stereo WAV DXD 24BIT/352.8kHz" yazıyordu. Bu da neymiş yahu deyip sitede yazanları okudum.

Parça DXD (Digital eXtreme Definition) tekniği kullanılarak WAV formatında kayıt edilmiş ve 24bit 352.8kHz çözünürülükte. Tabii dosyanın büyüklüğü de sesi kadar muhteşem. DXD-WAV dosyasının dakikası 100MB+, bir albümün 60dk olduğunu farzedersek albüm başı 6GB yer lazım. Nasıl kaydedildiği sitesinde yazılmış, işin teknik yönünü merak edenler siteden okuyabilir. Enteresan bir teknoloji. Sitede DXD'in tanımı şöyle yapılmış:

Digital eXtreme Definition is a professional audio format that brings "analogue" qualities in 32 bit floating point at 352.8 kHz. DXD preserves 11.2896 Mbit/s (4 times the data of DSD).

Hemen onu da indirdim ve çalmayı denedim. Tabii DAC hemen hata mesajı verdi. EMU'nun ve hemen hemen bütün DAC'ların işleyebileceği maximum çözünürlük 192kHz, sonrası şimdilik yok.

Sonra aklıma geldi, r8brain programıyla sample rate'i 24/192'ye düşürmeyi denedim ve başarıyla düşürdü.

Aynı parçanın 24/96 versiyonunu da indirmiştim. Ikisini arka arkaya dizip play düğmesine bastım ve pür dikkat ikisini de birbiri ardına dinlemeye başladım. Aşağıdaki resimde de göreceğiniz gibi parça "Joseph Haydn - String Quartet In D, Op. 76, No. 5 - Finale".

24/96'ya göre ciddi bir fark vardı. Tek bir parçadan kesin sonuç çıkarmak sağlıklı olmayabilir ama aradaki fark aşağı yukarı 16/44.1-24/96 kayıtlar arasındaki kadar diyebiliriz.

Tabii bir de benim kullandığım beleş conversion programını da gözönüne alırsak, stüdyoda bu işi iyi bilen ses mühendisleri ve profesyonel amaçlı conversion yazılımları ile yapılan 24/192'ler kesinlikle çok daha başarılı olacaktır diyebiliriz.

Vallahi arkadaşlar bu işler o kadar hızlı gelişiyor ki, takip etmek bile zorlaştı. Stereo Mecmuasındaki Blue Note yetkilisiyle yapılan söyleşide 32bit'lik müziklerin yakında geleceği yazılyordu. Bu gidişle tahminimizden çok daha kısa zamanda gerçekleşecektir inanın.

Not: peki bu DXD tekniğini kullanan alet neymiş derseniz alet "Digital Audio Denmark AX24".

Bu yöntem CDP/DAC'ların içindeki yazılımlarla gerçek zamanlı çalma aşamasında yapılıp daha kaliteli ses almaya yönelik bir yöntem olarak uzun zamandır kullanılmaktaydı.

Son teknolojik gelişmelerin ışığında, yeni çıkan yazılımlarla bu işlemin kalıcı olarak bir müzik dosyasına uygulanması ve hem "bit depth", hem de "sample rate"in arttırılarak çok iyi neticeler alındığını sıkça okuyordum.

Ama şimdiye kadar deneyememiştim. Sonra r8brain adlı yazılımı keşfedince şeytan dürttü bir deneyeyim dedim. Bu ücretsiz yazılım WAV dosyalarını 24bit/192kbps'e kadar upsampling işlemi uygulayabiliyor.

Ben denedim ve enteresan sonuçlar çıktı. Nasıl yaptığımı basitçe açıklarsam:

1. Arşivinizden iyi bildiğiniz bir albümün WAV dosyasını ayrı bir klasöre kopyalayın.

2. r8brain yazılımını kurun.

3. üstteki resimde görüldüğü gibi bit depth ve sample rate'i ayarlayın ve düğmeye basın.

Yazılımın çevirmesi bittikten sonra iki dosyayı Foobar'a ekleyip çalma düğmesine bastım. Sonuç şaşırtıcı biçimdeydi.

Upsampling işleminden geçmiş dosya "sahne, bass, üç boyutluluk vs.vs." açısından orjinal WAV dosyasından belirgin biçimde iyi çalıyordu. Defalarca dinledim, eğer placebo değilse bu böyle.

Güzelin kusuru: Dosya büyüklükleri orjinal (16/44.1) WAV'a göre 2.5-3 katı artıyor.

DAC'ları müsait olan arkadaşlar deneyip izlenimlerini yazarlarsa memnun olurum. Çalarken eğer ASIO plugin'i kullanmıyorsanız hem player'i, hem de DAC'ı elle 24bit ve 96khz'e ayarlamanız lazım. Unutmayın.

Eğer kulaklarım beni yanıltmamışsa iş çok enteresan ve stüdyo master kayıtlara yakın bir ses kalitesi oluştu. Favori CD'lerimizin gerçek "stüdyo master" kayıtları çıkana kadar bize daha kaliteli müzik dinletecek bir yöntem olabilir.

The July issue of the Polish PSX Extreme magazine has a Fallout 3
preview, based on the same London demo as all other recent previews in
Polish press. While the previewer (Bartosz "Zax" Dawidowski) is
completely sold on Bethesda hype ("Fallout 3 will ensure an
unprecedented level of immersion in a virtual world. And it will do it
with such class that it can be rated pretty much only in comparison to
itself"), he is also fairly competent about Fallout and Fallout 2.

Aside from the preview itself, there is also a frame about the Polish
Bethesda concept artist, Adam Adamowicz, and a short interview with
Pete Hines.

Some interesting bits:
* At 16 we select our perks - e.g. Bloody Mess or Good Speaker. Pete
didn't want to say what the rest of the perks will be.
* No word on whether children will be killable - when asked, Pete was evasive.
* No romances.
* The enemies are the most frightening in the history of RPGs and the
game can be treated as a survival horror.
* We will often have problems with lack of clean water or food. The
Geiger counter will sound pretty often. Hines says that when he plays
the alpha at home, he is pretty much never fully healed - he's always
either wounded or radiated.
* Eating food is not mandatory, but food increases your HP. However,
you should look out for radiated food. Sometimes you will have wonder
whether to eat radiated food, even with low HP, since the consequences
of radiation are even worse.
* Radiation is a much bigger problem in FO3 than in previous games. It
drastically decreases your combat abilities, and can even lower your
skills permanently.
* Destructability of the environment will be unprecedented for RPGs.
* There will be around 50 different weapons.
* While we'll be able to find e.g. Power Armors early on, they will be
in pretty bad condition (low CND bar) and will require extensive
repairs or will get broken quickly.
* The role of Charisma is lower than in previous games, Fallout is
relies on combat much more than FO1 and FO2. However, we'll be able to
use stealth throughout most of the game.[Brios:see the note in the end]
* Many weapons can be constructed based on schematics.
* If you have your weapon on your shoulder, you can run and the NPCs
are not aggressive. If you equip it, you can only walk.
* Jumping has no influence on the combat system, it's just for
avoiding some obstacles.
* Enemies will not adjust their levels to that of the player. If you
come to a certain place when your level is too low, you're expected to
die.
* There is no gambling, you cannot participate in slaver raids nor
guard caravans.
* No locations are randomly generated. However, depending on which way
you'll head, some scripted events will appear there, e.g. you will
encounter Dogmeat early on regardless or where you go.

Regarding Charisma Emil Pagliarulo made a correction:

If you want to sweet talk your way through situations, a high Charisma is definitely valuable. As is, of course, a high Speech skill.
There's a ton of dialogue, as has been mentioned before. Lots more to say to individual people (true conversation trees), and lots of opportunities to talk your way through quests/gameplay situations.

Bana gelen mail'lerden çoğunluğun yeni çıkacak aletleri bekleme taraftarı olduğunu anlıyorum. Acaba "almalı mı, almamalı mı yoksa beklemeli mi?"

Benim kanaatim HiFi firmaların hepsinin yakın zamanda birer DAC'la piyasaya çıkacağı ama çıkacak aletlerin Pro-Audio sektöründekilerin birer kopyası olacağı yönünde. Yeni ve akla gelemeyen fikirlerle gelmeleri zor. Burada sadece Linn DS serisi gibi UPnP uyumlu aletlerin (eğer yaygınlaşırlarsa tabii) bize değişik alternatifler getirmesi söz konusu olabilir.

Tabii pazarlama yöntemleri ve paketleme (kozmetik) teknikleriyle işi değişik şekilde göstermeye çalışacaklardır ama sonuçta Pro-Audio aletlerin benzerleri (belki de kötü birer kopyası) olacaktır.

Ayrıca internet üzerinden satılan ve hızla yaygınlaşan Hi-Def (24bit/96khz ve üstü) dosyalar bize gerçekten müthiş ufuklar açacağa benziyor. Yani bir yerde daha kaliteli müzik için kaynak olarak bir PC/MAC şart.

Peki ne yapmalı?

Bence orta yolu denemeli. Bir yerden bu işe başlamalı diyorsanız, ilk önce 200-300$ arası bir bütçe ayırın ve bir EMU veya M-Audio "Audio Interface" alın. Bu yazıyı okuyorsanız zaten bir PC'niz var demektir (yani ek maliyet yok), ucundan CD'lerinizi FLAC formatına çevirip dinlemeye başlayın.

Bu miktar eğer sonuçta vazgeçseniz bile sizi üzmeyecek ve çok az bir zararla aleti satabileceksiniz. En kötü senaryoda 100-150$'lık bir zararla bu işten sıyrılırsınız.

France recently altered its earlier commitment to achieve 0.5% in 2007 and 0.7% in 2012, bringing it into line with the European Union’s undertaking to achieve 0.51 % in 2010 and 0.7 % in 2015. It is essential that France should plan for the resources that will be needed to meet this increase. The government should ensure that sufficient appropriations are included in the three year budget legislation when it goes before Parliament for approval this year. In doing so, France is invited by DAC to consider the manner in which it reports its official development assistance.

France has some specific assets, in particular its close historical, cultural and economic ties with many developing countries and its ability to combine multiple tools such as aid projects and technical assistence  in support of their development. In addition to its efforts in favour of peace and security, France has been one of the drivers in key areas such as development financing and involvement in fragile states. It has also taken innovative approaches at the regional level.

DAC has noted the fragmentation of the French system, involving various ministries and agencies. In addition, its procedures are complex. This reduces its impact. DAC is therefore pleased that the Peer Review has coincided with the current general review of public policies and would like to see the Review serve, as the Secretary of State said, to further the reform of the French aid system. DAC invites France to pursue its efforts, undertaken since 2004, to enhance the impact of its aid and the efficiency of its system. In particular, France could reinforce its strategic management and strengthen AFD, the agency that manages aid. This reform effort should take account of the need to implement the Paris Declaration on aid effectiveness.

Finally, France could reinforce its strategic approach to development co operation by focusing on combating poverty. Greater geographic concentration on the least developed countries and fragile states will enable it to have a stronger impact. In so doing, it should be careful to strike an appropriate balance between grants and loans. DAC encourages France to continue its policy, particularly with regard to reforming the security sector. France could also make more use of NGOs as a resource and engage in humanitarian aid, like other donors.

DAC conducted its Peer Review of the Development Co-operation Policies and Programmes of France on 6 May 2008. The discussions were led by the DAC Chair, Mr. Eckhard Deutscher. Me revoila donc apres 2 semaines d absence. Comme je le prevoyais dans mon article precedent, il s est passe pas mal de choses pendant ces deux dernieres semaines. La premiere a ete assez chargee au niveau travail car mon chef et le commercial japonais etaient presents dans la baie de San Francisco. C etait la premiere fois que je rencontrais le japonais, ca c est plutot bien passe et il a notamment pu me donner quelques conseils sur les habitudes dans les restaurants japonais. Apres en dehors de ca, j ai egalement servi partiellement de guide pour trouver quelques restaurants le soir ou bien aller au grand mall de milpitas pour faire quelques courses. Sinon, une petite anecdote sympa. Pendant une apres-midi, max, le japonais, decide d aller se chercher un soda dans le coin cuisine de nos bureaux. Il revient donc avec une canette sur laquelle sont dessines des fruits genres cerises, framboises etc... on s attend donc a un jus de fruit genre minute maid mais en regardant bien les ingredients dans le soda indiques sur la canette, il trouve l inscription " This beverage contains no fruits" autrment dit ce soda est entierement compose d ingredients chimiques mais aucuns fruits naturels... Voila c est encore une anecdote sur la nourriture ou les boissons americaines, c est pas la premiere et ce ne sera surement pas la derniere

Apres ca, samedi apres midi, depart en avion pour los angeles et apres une location de voiture plus compliquee que prevue, on part avec notre 4x4 ford explorer direction anaheim ou se tient la semaine prochaine DAC: Design Automation Conference. En gros, c est LE rendez-vous des compagnies qui travaillent dans le meme domaine que moi, une sorte de grande exposition de tous les outils existants pour aider au developpement de systemes electroniques. Donc, pour en revenir a mon voyage, je retrouve donc samedi soir ous mes collegues de france que je n avais plus vu depuis un certain moment mais la plupart etaient tres fatigues a cause du decalage horaire. L hotel etait vraiment top et en plus juste a cote du convention center. Ensuite, pendant toute la semaine, j ai donc ete a la conference en alternant presentations de notre logiciels, demonstrations et assistances a des sessions technique. C etait vraiment enrichissant et sympa de se retrouver au milieu de tout cet environnement meme si c etait vraiment usant physiquement. A noter aussi, au milieu de la semaine, la denali party. Denali, c est une societe qui expose pendant la conference et qui chaque annee loue un endroit pour organiser une grande soiree avec concert d un groupe disco et boissons gratuites. On n'y est pas alle tres longtemps car on etait tous assez fatigues mais il y avait une tres bonne ambiance et c est aussi la premiere fois que je vais a une soiree ou les ecrans geants affichent des slogans tels "USB 3.0 is coming" ou d autres slogans vantant les merites de la memoire DDR. Voila finalement retour a san francisco vendredi soir pour passer un week end plus reposant. En plus j ai recu ma grosse malle de france donc maintenant j ai plus d affaires disponibles pour m habiller.

Par contre, on va eviter de parler de la coupe d europe de football vu les resultats de l equipe de france et on va attendre le match contre l italie pour voir si ca vaut le coup d en parler.

It is not raining very much in Phnom Penh during this rainy season, but the other provinces are reporting gully-washers. Before I left on part of my annual leave, there had been some heavy storms, mainly in ht afternoon. I like the rainy season and it gives me a great excuse to either sit inside and read, or duck into an open front bar for a delicious icy-cold Anchor draft beer. One bar in particular has adopted this strategy of having ice cold mugs available for every draft. It is the Revolution bar on Street 51 near Norodom Sihaunouk Blvd. Alex is the owner and is of British ancestry. He is married to a Khmei girl and they have just celebrated the birth of their first child. Alex was fortunate to have gotten married before the ban on foreigners marrying Cambodian nationals. I would tell you more about this rather Draconian measure, but I ( and most of the Cambodians I know) really do not know much more than that it was a proclamation and no one seems ot know much else.

Today I received an invitation to attend the Queen’s Birthday bash on 19 June 2008. Required dress is “lounge suit”. I had visions of the leisure suits of the 70’s and after asking my British mates, it seems that this is just a regular suit. Several of the volunteers do not own suits, but they at least have a dress shirt and a tie. I, of course , will attend resplendent in one of my new suits that I had had made earlier this year. In my elegant finery, I will be able to find out why I and my other loud volunteer companion have not heard any more of our invitations to join the British embassy choir. If you recall I think I had predicted an omission of follow up after sobriety set in last December. Whatever, I still think they need my booming voice, off-key renditions of Rudolf the Red-nose, and serious appreciation of the copious amounts of free booze that the Brits lavish on guests at their functions. Maybe I am misreading the generosity of the Brits in deference to the well-developed drinking abilities of the VSO volunteers.

On a similar note, I have also received an invitation to attend the Fourth of July hootenanny at he American Embassy on July 6th, a Sunday. It looks like a family affair with the “7th fleet navy band entertaining the mob, Circus/acrobat performances, Kids’ activities – face-painting, balloon animals, bubbles and playground, Dunking booth, eating contests, food vendors and more!” Admission is (or was – up to May 31st) $3. After June 1st the price of entertainment went up to $5. So far I have not decided exactly what I want to do with my Sunday afternoon from 3 to 7:00 PM, but I am tempted to go and see what the other Americans look like.

Another word on the Queen’s birthday. I am very pleased with the thought of the queens, Cambodian and British, having birthdays otherwise I would be restricted to only 10 to 15 days of holiday a year. This way I can hoist one or two in honor of the fair queens and solemnly chant “Long Live the Queen” and may she have more birthdays every year. Actually the British Queen does have at least two. So, there you go, sports fans, we asked and they delivered.

Work is moving along very well. I don’t think I am doing very much in terms of actual work output, but I am still asked to write speeches for the “suits” and correct and draft reports on conferences and workshops. I am being given more and more allowance to “edit” these reports to include references to areas I believe are important and that somehow get overlooked. In the early days I would include some references to gender iniquities and would be informed that while these were important our focus was on children with disabilities, (read deaf, blind and crippled). I concurred and rewrote when informed but I am noticing much more of my stuff getting through now. Whereas before only some phrases like “So far, so good” tickled their linguistic funny bones, now they are commenting on women’s roles in provincial and central government positions., minority education receiving more attention, and “reaching the unreached”. It also helps that UNICEF, UNESCO, and the World Bank are getting a little more pushy in these matters as well.

I have written a proposal and it was accepted to have myself and another fellow from the Special Education Office and another volunteer and his counterpart from the Disability Action Council go on monitoring and evaluation trip to six of the 24 provinces. These will be short trips, probably a week or a week and a half per pair of provinces, but it will give me a chance to see actual schools and ask questions about inclusive education. The only serious problems with this proposed traveling is getting periods of time where four of us have convenient calendars (or “diaries” as the Brits say) to spend together. If worse comes to worse I will just go with my counterpart or maybe the guy from DAC.

In July, my colleagues are going back to Vietnam, this time to Da nang, to give a report on children with Disabilities or Inclusive Education. I am responsible for developing the Power Point presentation for this although VSO could not fund my attendance. Budget cuts are becoming more the norm than the exception. Even if I cannot go, I am flattered to have a big role in the presentation.

Recently I was introduced to a meeting of Quakers when I visited the U.K. I was thoroughly intrigued by these incredible people and was reminded of my early Druid roots by my Aunt Rosemary, who is a reincarnated Druid Priestess herself. The tolerance of Quakers for almost any belief is fantastic. I read a letter from a “friend” who had basically stopped believing in God but still found the spirituality of the Quakers strengthening and supportive. I don’t mean to antagonize my Christian or Muslim brothers and sisters out there, but this is a revolutionary style of religion. When I think of all of the slaughter and harm and hatred of religious factions over the centuries, I have to believe that the institution and belief systems of these people holds some merit. I intend to investigate this more thoroughly. It is amazing to me that while I have heard of the Quakers since I was a child this was the first time I had actually met any of them. The services I attended were services of silence. No one talks unless they have something to say, and too much talking is discouraged. After the service the Friends meet and have a social hour. That is it for now, my faithful and supportive gang. I find it hard to believe that I am in my twelfth month of service. I have learned a lot and hope that I have provided some support to the efforts of these proud and tough peoples. Phnom Penh continues to enjoy a developing prosperity while at the same time, inflation and world affairs continue to march on. Rather than exploring what makes :Wumpscut: in particular so appealing, it seems far more entertaining to delve into the joys of Industrial music, and consider why this genre receives little to no mainstream press anywhere in the world, but is a vibrant and thriving sub-culture; brimming with creativity and intriguing perspectives.

First, the negative associations with Industrial music. Utilising many unconventional or perhaps inappropriate and confrontational themes including warfare, fascism, totalitarianism and military-state credo (Duguid, 1995); or sexual deviance, serial killers, and arguably the most important, issues of censorship, information control, and autonomy from the media, the government, and big business music labels (Lerner, 2004).

Aside from such issues is the genre or style itself; more specifically, the plethora of talented individuals and groups that contribute to new forms of sonic exploration and experimentation, as well as those mainstay acts that provide the Industrial fan with a 'classic' combination of powerful stomping beats and militaristic drones, grinding factory assembly line churning and screeching, and a mixture of ethereal, atonal, and distorted voices that whisper, sing and scream of AI sentience, the horrors of warfare, mankind's self-destructive nature and some deeply complex philosophical issues focusing upon the nature of what it means to be man, is man but an organic machine masquerading as something different, and many other intriguing questions fuelled by the integration and automation of the contemporary world with technology.

The technology in itself is a curious factor in the ingenuity of Industrial musicians; arguably more programmer than composer, the Industrial artist records in analog, digital, or both formats. Utilising vocoders, synthesizers, sound-mapping hard/software, home-made instruments, feedback loops, megaphones, distortion pedals, sub-harmonic enhancers, and many other devices that aid in the exploration and experimentation of electronic music; although many acts utilise traditional instruments in addition to their Industrial sounds, such as KMFDM, Nine Inch Nails, etc.

"... let me reiterate that there is a HUGE GAP in the music business world and the music buying audiences. Music isn't being made that satisfies the audience anymore - controversy isn't being raised and nobody is really too excited about much of anything out there right now" (Meeker, 2002). The aforementioned statement exemplifies why many music fans seek more and more underground creative performers to stimulate, to challenge, and to entertain. Rammstein's on-stage antics have earnt them law-suits, censoring, imprisonment, and bans from performing in some countries for an indefinite period; yet they are considered one of the darling's on Industrial Metal; conforming to the machine-like precision of many Industrial musicians as well as pushing the envelope in the visual arena. Despite such controversy, and the fact that they sing almost entirely in their native tongue, Rammstein cracked the global mainstream market and have been hugely popular ever since.

Even on local soil, we have a small but dedicated group of Industrial artists working together to support one another and their love for non-mainstream electronic music. Most prominently amongst the Crash frequency are a duo from Sydney, Australia. Angelspit; built on noise, punk, alt.rock, 'riot grrl' ethics, cyberculture and dystopian ideologies, and a massive 'F**K YOU!!' to mainstream narcissism, obedience, and obsession, Angelspit are a perfect example of the ingenuity of Industrial musicians (source). Home-made hairpieces, clothing, and dark sub-culture accessories sold through their webstore helped finance their first Ep, Nurse grenade, and their debut album Krankhaus. They have performed live at the Wave Gotik Treffen, Summer Darkness, and Castle Party music festivals in Europe; played shows with KMFDM, Cruxshadows, along with many other 'dark alternative' acts through the US; have re-mixed for and by Combichrist, Emilie Autumn; and are currently touring their home turf in support of their second album Blood Death Ivory due on the 1st of June (source).

In our country, Industrial performers like Angelspit are under-valued and under-appreciated; shunned by music fans that prefer something less jolting or non-conventional. But as aforementioned, much of industrial music's appeal is its' very confrontational, energetic and challenging issues and sounds; perhaps most effective in creating a further divide between people who appreciate diversity, creativity, and talent in their music to those who favour a worthless commodity soon forgotten.

Plaklarımız iyi hoş da kullanımı çok zahmetli. Iğne, kol ayarı, temizlik vs.vs. derken çok uğraştırıyor. Benim gibi sabırsızlar için pek uygun değil. Ayrıca az da olsa her çalışta yıpranıyor, yani ömrü çalma sayınızla orantılı olarak sınırlı. Elimizdeki eski plakları bir daha bulma ihtimalimiz de genellikle yok.

Geçenlerde yaptığımız Linn Akurate DS dinletisinde herkesin genel kanısı High-Definition kayıtların, kaliteli bir DAC'la dinlenince analoğa çok yaklaştığıydı. Ben de aynen öyle düşünüyorum. Gerçekten sonuç daha detaylı, üç boyutlu ve çok kaliteli müzik olmuştu. Evde dinleyince de aynı sonucu alıyorum.

Geçen gün yabancı bir forumda bir müziksever elindeki plakları yüksek çözünürlükte (24bit/96kHz FLAC) dosyalara çevirdiğini ve çok iyi netice aldığını yazıyordu. Işin o kısmı açıkçası aklıma hiç gelmemişti. Peki madem böyle bir teknoloji elimizin altında niye faydalanmıyoruz? Eskiden olduğu gibi CD'lerin kısıtlı çözünürlüğüne de mahkum değiliz. 24bit/192kHz'e kadar önümüz açık. Tabii bir "Analog-Digital çeviriciniz" varsa!!

Eğer DAC seçiminizi benim gibi bir "Audio Interface"den yana kullandıysanız sorun yok. Alet müzisyenler düşünülerek tasarlandığı için aynı zamanda bir ADC (Analog Digital Converter) olarak da iş görecektir. Hatta alete bir mikrofon bağlayıp, kendi sesinizi kaydedip meşhur olma şansını bile yakalayabilirsiniz!!

Biraz yardım alarak ve kaliteli bir pikap kullanarak plaklarımızı yüksek çözünürlüklü formatlar (mesela FLAC) kullanarak diskimize aktarabiliriz ve keyifle bilgisayarımızdan dinleyebiliriz. Seçeceğiniz çözünürlük de sadece DAC'ınızın kapasitesi ve diskinizin büyüklüğü ile sınırlı.

Pro-Audio yazılımlar kullanarak aşağıdaki resimde de göreceğiniz gibi çözünürlüğü (Bit Depth-Sample Rate) kendimiz belirleyerek kayıtlar yapabiliriz. Fikir bana çok enteresan geldi. Eğer 24bit kayıt yapabilen "Audio Interface"iniz ve "Cubase" tipi bir yazılımınız varsa, biraz öğrenip bu kayıtları kolaylıkla yapabiliriz diye düşünüyorum.

Ufak bir problem kayıt cihazının bir plağı tek bir parça gibi algılaması, ama onu da FLAC formatına çevirdikten sonra "Cue Splitter" adlı ücretsiz bir yazılımla kolayca çözüp albümü istediğimiz gibi parçalara bölebiliriz. Plaklarınızı da kayıttan sonra tekrar kaplarına koyup arşive kaldırabilirsiniz.

Ilk müsait zamanımda biraz vakit harcayıp, programı öğrenip bir deneme yapacağım, bakalım becerecekmiyim. Tabii deneme için önce ödünç bir pikap bulduktan sonra!!!

3. Bildiğimiz PC/Mac'lerimize takılan PCI Ses kartları. Bunların kasa içine takılması belli bir uzmanlık istiyor ama fiyat/performans oranı en başarılı aletler.

Peki piyasada çok kaliteli ve üstün pro PCI Ses kartları var, bunları kullanmak istiyorsunuz ama laptopunuzdan da vazgeçmek istemiyorsunuz. Ya da bu PCI kartları bir PC'nin audio için çok ideal olmayan ortamından uzak tutmak istiyorsunuz. Ne yapacaksınız?

Geçen gün çok enteresan bir ürün gördüm. Magma Express Box isimli bu kutu herhangi bir PCI kartı içine bağlayıp, ister Laptop'a, ister normal PC'ye bağlanabiliyor, kendi güç kaynağı ve soğutması var. Audio için en kritik bölüm olan Digital'den Analog'a çevirim işlemini bir PC'nin gürültülü ve kirli ortamından uzakta gerçekleştirebiliyor.

Isterseniz bir PCI Express bağlantısıyla laptopunuza veya PCI-e host bağlantısıyla da normal kasa PC'nize bağlayabiliyorsunuz. Bir önemli özelliği ise hızı. 2000Mbps süratiyle bir Firewire 800'den 2.5 kere, Firewire 400'den 5 kere, USB 2.0'dan da 4.2 kere daha hızlı. Yani bant genişliği problemi hiç bir zaman olmayacaktır.

Gerçekten çok ilginç bir fikir olmuş. Önümüze çok değişik alternatifler getirebilir. Pro Audio dünyasında mesela Lynx AES 16 gibi çok çok kaliteli ürünler var ama sadece PCI versiyonları mevcut. Bu ürünlerin hepsi de MAC uyumlu ama MAC tower kasalar ateş pahası (3-4 bin $'dan başlıyor galiba) ve mesela MAC Mini gibi küçük kasalı modellere de zaten takılamıyor.

Bu ürünle iki dünyanın çok kaliteli ve hesaplı aletlerini (bir PCI ses kartı ve laptop mesela) aynı çatı altında birleştirip nirvanaya daha hesaplı ve kısa yoldan ulaşabileceğiz galiba. Incelemeye değer bir ürün. Türkiye'de satılmıyor ama bayram, seyran bahanesiyle veya ABD'en gelen birine ısmarlanabilir.

I found this site while looking for analog computer tracking circuits for guided missiles.  Apparently, the military still uses analog computers in some of its applications.  Tracking circuits are a natural for analog computers, as the sensors tend to have an analog output, and the parallel and almost instantaneous response of a fast analog circuit can be quite handy when you need real time control signals for steering a missile.

I haven't had much time yet to explore this chip supplier website, but it seems more interesting to me than the consumer product websites I looked at this morning.  It always amazes me how there can be so much high tech stuff in the world that never gets used in everyday life.  Then again, even a simple CD player has some pretty high tech stuff inside it.  I really must try to get back into the cutting edge of technology.

Word length digital dünyada bir örnek (sample) gönderilirken kaç digit olarak gönderildiğini anlatır. Evet biraz karışık oldu galiba, konuyu biraz daha açalım:

• 8 bit'lik bir word length 00000000-11111111 (decimal olarak 0-255) arası bir değere sahip olabilir.
• 16 bit ise 0000000000000000-1111111111111111 (decimal olarak 0-65,536) arası bir değere sahip olabilir.
• 24 bit ise tahmin edebileceğiniz gibi çok daha fazla değer içerir. 000000000000000000000000-111111111111111111111111 (decimal olarak yanlış hesaplamadıysam 0-16.700.000) arası bir değere sahip olabilir.

Kısacası her 1 bit artışında çözünürlük ikiye katlanıyor. Yine karışık oldu. Peki fotoğrafçılık diliyle anlatırsak:

Sample Rate bir analog kayıtın digital sinyallere çevrilirken, yani fotoğrafları çekilirken saniyede kaç kere çekileceğine, Word Length ise bu fotoğrafların ne kadar çözünürlüğe (yani netliğe) sahip olacağını belirler. Word Length'e fotoğraflardaki çözünürlüğü gösteren pixels/inch değerleri diye de bakabilirsiniz. Bu değer ne kadar yüksek olursa fotoğraf da o kadar net olur. Aynı şey Audio sinyalleri için de geçerlidir.

Özetlersek:
16bit/44.1kHz => bir analog kayıttan saniyede 44.100 kere sample alınıyor, her sample 16bit yani 0-65.536 değerleri arasında,
24bit/96kHz => saniyede 96.000 kere sample alınıyor, her sample 24bit yani 0-16.700.000 değerleri arasında olabiliyor.

Son zamanlarda bu High Definition kayıtlar şöyle güzel, böyle güzel, enstrümanları tek tek duyabiliyoruz, sanki yanımızda gibi çalıyor, sahnesi o kadar yüksek ki gökdelenler vız geliyor, genişliği ise taa Çanakkale'ye uzanıyor vs.vs. diye bolca yazıp çiziyoruz. Nedeni ise yukarıda anlattığım gibi bu 24bit'lik dosyaların çözünürlüklerindeki müthiş artıştan kaynaklanıyor.

Bilhassa klasik müzikte bu fark daha belirgin olarak ortaya çıkıyor. Dönüşümlü olarak dinleyince 16bit'lik kayıtlar çok yavan geliyor, insanın dinleyesi gelmiyor.

Peki bu High definition sinyaller bilgisayarımıza ne kadar yük bindiriyor derseniz. 2 kanal x 24 bits/sample x 96.000 samples = 4.6 mbit/sec kapasite gerekiyor. USB 2.0/Firewire bağlantılar için fazla bir yük değil, modern bilgisayarların hepsi bu işi hiç zorlanmadan hallediyor.

Işte Word Length'in çok çok basitçe açıklaması bence bu, gerisi ses mühendislerinin alanına girer. Benim bu işten okuyup anladıklarım böyle, yanlış birşey varsa düzeltin.
