THE "SECOND SUMMER OF LOVE" 20th ANNIVERSARY SYMPOSIUM

Like the 'First Summer of Love' which started in Haight-Ashbury and went on to change the world, this important happening spread fast from places like London and Ibiza and likewise changed the world. We invite you to participate as we go back in time to 1988 and see why, where, when and how the 'Second Summer of Love' happened and the impact it had on both the Mainstream and the Counterculture.

A panel featuring Counterculture visionary FRASER CLARK (founder of the legendary groundbreaking alternative club 'Megatripolis') and KATE 'MAGIC' WOOD (author of the much awaited forthcoming book on the history of the 'Second Summer of Love': '88: The Untold History of a Revolution), MARK HELEY (Waveform Festival), MIXMASTER MORRIS (The Irresistible Force) and WAYNE ANTHONY (author of 'Class of 88') will help lead the path to the past with a view to understanding the present state of the rave scene and navigating into the future as well. Music and film from the period will feature as well. This event is a don't miss!

Couple funny things happened yesterday, but nothing will top the catfight (literal) that I saw whils

Couple funny things happened yesterday, but nothing will top the catfight (literal) that I saw whilst walking across the turnaround bridge on my way to Stonebridge...... So there I am, pondering the meaning of life, when I hear what sounds like people screaming to my right in the grass. I look over, expecting to find an abandoned child or something, and I see these two cats slugging it out... Awesome! they were on hind legs, just duking it out, a la Ali vs. Foreman, Rumble In the Jungle style. So I watched for a little bit, then they stopped suddenly and just stared each other down. I found myself yelling at them from the bridge to continue for my obvious amusement, but to no avail. Now two cats just fighting on a grassy knoll is funny, but to see two cats fighting on a grassy knoll AND see a man yelling at them to continue from a bridge is just downright hilarious!

So after my voyuerism was satisfied, I took to the streets and made my way to the Grog Shop to see a man named Daedelus perform.

[caption id="attachment_75" align="aligncenter" width="200" caption="Daedelus"][/caption]

Show was dope.... though I thought he used some kind of dj elements... He's a non-traditional dj, kind of like Girl Talk. He's more of a dj/composer/artist... He was even wearing a jacket with tails- kind of like a conductor. Get this, instead of just using his computer (Girl Talk), or using Technics, he uses a thing called a Monome.

[caption id="attachment_76" align="aligncenter" width="240" caption="Monome: In various forms (there are more)"][/caption]

Straight outta philly, a monome is a device that lets you break up a song into sections to manipulate as you will... The guys are super green, and use all local products to create these custom, hand-made genius devices. So you attach it to a computer and pull up the songs you want and place effects into different zones on the interface. Watching Daedelus work this thing I figure that the first button from left to right is the song... then the rows below are different parts of songs you can add to the original. And the thing tracks (via l.e.d.) from left to right, so you know where you are at every part of the song... So if you press one of the buttons in the middle- thusyou're in the middle of ur 16 bars or whatever (not a music major)- and it'll start over from that point.... So if you wanted to do an echo kind of thing, or just repeat a section, you'd just keep hitting the button. It's a really interesting way to play. You have supreme control over the music in a way that you couldn't do as a dj (unless you went home and engineered a track on the comp, which takes forever, ugh).

He played more than just tracks from his new LP, "Love To Make Music To," he was throwin down some NIN, Nirvana, and many more tracks that I can't remember (pretty tired). So check out some new shit and see if you can figure out what that monome thing is. If you do, lemme know! Forgot to bring my camera, so no pic recap.... but I'm going to Sinden tonight @ B Side, and i'll be damned if I don't bring it this time!

Okay, not exactly but this is noteworthy. I’m sure everyone is familiar with what “open

Okay, not exactly but this is noteworthy. I'm sure everyone is familiar with what "open source" is. Well, to put it in a nutshell, it is the opening up of source code of various applications, allowing for its users to make improvements and changes to their liking. Hence, the old distinction between "inventor" and "customer" is flattened to a large degree. One of the most popular example of the Open Source movement is Mozilla Firefox, but there are many others, including Wikipedia.

The chatter about the Open Source "movement" has simmered down in recent years due to the rise in Web 2.0-talk for many reasons, one of which has to do with the rise in popularity of open source software in lieu of hardware (Again, look at Mozilla's rise). This makes a lot of sense since hardware on some level has always been open source, if you wanted it to be. What I mean is that anyone can modify and tweak a guitar amp for example by opening it up with your hands and rewiring various things or replacing this or that part. I say this with a smirk on my face since I know that messing with hardware requires a huge degree of specialized knowledge whereas making a change on a Wikipedia entry, for example, is comparatively easier.

The divide that kept the terms "hardware" and "open source" far away from each other as the two halves of Moses' Red Sea is slowing recuperating with the advent of this baby.

This is the Open Stomp Coyote-1, which is being branded as "the world's first open-source digital guitar effects processor." How this works is that the Coyote comes with software that allows for customization of effects and patches as well as an online community which of course promotes the sharing of said effects and patches with other users of the Coyote. Here is what the software, called the Workbench looks like:

Looks pretty promising but I have two potential criticisms (which mind you are completely unwarranted since I've yet to get my hands on this thing nor will I ever). The first, which I think is what many companies fall prey to, is that OpenStomp relies too heavily on people purchasing enough of their products to form the database of effects and patches that will be freely shared. In other words, if I'm one of the 10 people that have purchased this thing, half of the entire novelty of this product has been erased. Secondly, it is not really open source hardware in the sense that the basic hardware components cannot be manipulated. Now that may be asking for a lot but to advertise this thing as open-source hardware is a bit misleading. With the advent of MIDI and digital sampling, we've had assignable hardware, which allows users of a keyboard sampler, for example, to load whatever sounds they want to various "banks" and play them back by hitting the keys of the keyboard. It is basically the same principle employed by any cheap Casio, which, with a click of a button, changes the sound of the instrument that you are playing, despite the fact that you are playing the same set of physical keys. Quite simply, it is the ability to assign a different effect to the same cause. In my mind, this pedal is just an extension of that logic placed onto an effects pedal context with the added bonus of creating your own presets and storing them onto the pedal (which, although may not be a big deal in terms of media and technology studies, is admittedly a big deal for musicians who play live often). Let's see if this thing takes off but, for me, what is far more innovative is what musicians like electronic musician Daedelus and Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello do, which is literally construct their own hardware.

Daedelus' renowned "bit box" aka monome. If you don't know him, check him out. He's that FIREEEE:

The boys from DANCEiSM are back. This Saturday, August 23, Los Angeles will find itself infested with electro/dance enthusiasts in some random warehouse/bunker where kids will sweat in their dunks, pedo glasses and bright-colored shirts. Oh, and body paint, too.

It's guest list only, so RSVP here with your name plus the number of guests you intend to bring. All the information regarding admission, location and address will be provided after you send in your reservation. So do it now.

I just hope that gigantor twister game will be back.

If you can't handle an electro-gangbang all night, then go to the 28th annual Sunset Junction Street Festival. This year's lineup features Broken Social Scene, the mutherfucking Black Keys, Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, Health, !!!, Cold War Kids and Kinky. I'm sure there are other performers as well but if they haven't been blogged about by Disco Workout or Pitchforkmedia, then I don't give a fuck either.

If you're as psychotic and willing to damage your body as I am, then join me as I rape my ears and lungs all day and all night by attending both events.

And because I masturbate to this shit nearly every night, I just want to say that this year's Halloween will be amazing. It's all about HARD's Haunted Mansion.

Fuck me: Justice, Boys Noize, Crookers, Soulwax, Simian Mobile Disco, Deadmau5, Crystal Castles, Daedelus, Destructo, Jason Bentley and DJ AM all in one night.

My Iron Man mask will be in full effect and somehow, I will devise a way to make my eyes glow. I'll do it, damnit! I swear!

Forget Monster Massive. In fact, fuck it. Fuck it right in the ear!

Show Synopsis: After being tipped off by Dr. McKay in the future Shephard leads his team to a faci

Show Synopsis: After being tipped off by Dr. McKay in the future Shephard leads his team to a facility where Michael was planning to deliver Teyla's baby. Arriving before the wraith and his science experiemnt followers, they set off a booby trap that collapsed the entire building on the team and their support. It's up to Colonel Carter to rescue them, but the clock is ticking as Michael returns with his Wraith ship to claim his prize, and aboard his ship is Teyla, who is already having contractions.

My Review: Only read on if you enjoy SPOILERS! I found Search and Rescue to be an excellent opener for season 5 and a suspenseful and fulfilling conclusion to the end of season 4. Atlantis has a great knack for fun and exciting Season openers and this was no sloutch in comparison. The first scene that shows Michael receiving the sub-space message from his destroyed lab, traveling threw solar systems, nebulas, and asteroid fileds was an awesome visual that gave the show an epic feel.

Season Four was very different from the previous three seasons, and it focused more on the inter-realtionships of the team, and bonded them together in a way that was much more palpable than before, and while each of their lives is often in peril, there was no question this episode really exemplified the extremes thei relationships motivated and pushed them. Each of their sacrfices for each other really made this show special.

Best Scene: Not a shock, but Rodney delivering Teyla's baby was simply priceless. Somehow Rodney is always a pitch perfect mix of neurotic, narcissitc, and innert sweeteness. The delivering of Teyla's son was that tenfold. Both funny and kind.

Overall Conjecture: Looks to be an interesting season that if my predicitons hold up will involve a lot of personal trials for our heros to overcome, rather than galatic ones, since last season they pretty much covered that on every bit of the spectrum. With Amanda Tapping leaving and Woosley taking her place, there is no doubt that this season is going to have a different feel to it. I am pretty geared.

For all the Stargate information in the world go to Gateworld, as usual.

Love To Make Music To is the title of Daedelus’s latest album. It is an admittedly clever album title, and something that I found myself smiling about when I realized what it meant, with a little guidance from pitchfork. Every time I listen to this album I hear something I swear wasn’t there before, and couldn’t possibly exist anywhere else than within the beat Daedelus has crafted it within. Daedelus is fast growing to be one of my favorite aural landscapists, if I can be a little vague in my description, yet his latest album shows a growth and focus that had only been touched on in his previous release Exquisite Corpse.

I had heard the opening song Fairweather Friends on the stellar EP of the same name, and I had since then been foaming at the mouth, or maybe the back of the head in a semi patient wait for the release while the music world erupted around me. Hearing it again as soon as I pressed play however, I was torn completely from where I was, and placed back into that friendly world of foreign and lively inorganic sounds that Daedelus seems to recreate so well.

This is not an album for everyone however, if you weren’t a fan of his previous works, this one is still worth a shot, but don’t expect a complete conversion. This is still Trip Hop meets IDM meets Twitch Hop at its finest, complete with confusing beats and oft lost melodies.
What I can say however is songs like “Hrs:Mins:Secs” have consumed the whole of my attention in their covert yet powerful ability to get my head bobbing and foot tapping all the while wondering what it was that inspired these beats that are always a step ahead of me.

The lyrics on the few tracks with them didn’t hit me as particularly breathtaking, but I was searching through the beats on most of the songs anyway, so I didn’t really hear them. The exception being the perfect marriage of lyrics and beat progression that is the song “My Beau”, another alumni of the Fairweather Friends EP. The intertwining of Erika Rose’s ghostly and addictive calls subdued by the background beat, and Paperboys notably lively lyrical responses create a powerful three minutes that have had me hitting the repeat button on more than one occasion.

This album is definitely worth a listen if for nothing else than to expose yourself to the magic that is “Fairweather Friends” and the inescapably optimistic and addictive “My Beau”. And to possibly, discover what that aloof fellow Alfred Darlington is all about.

Well, well, well. My computer's blown a gasket, so last week's show wasn't the inaugural Thursday jumpoff I had planned. We're all set for this week however!

Hailing from Los Angeles, Daedelus is one experimental-electronica virtuoso that is not to be ignored. With a soft spot for dramatics, he produces blissful, poppy melodies laid over sick beatz. He totally earns his status as God Warrior because dude can play the accordion, and because his full name (Alfred Darlington) is totally majestic. Love To Make Music To, his most recent release, is packed full of electronic gems that are sure to appeal to your brain as well as yo' booty.
