Report blasts agency over Radio and TV Martí no-bid deals

The 30-page report is the first in a series of GAO reports on the operations of Radio and TV Martí, which beam commentary, entertainment and news to Cuba under the Office of Cuba Broadcasting, which is based in Miami.
The investigating branch of the U.S. Congress has accused the federal agency that oversees radio and television broadcasts to Cuba of awarding more than $1 million in contracts to two Miami broadcast outlets without following normal contract-bidding procedures.

In a report issued Tuesday, the Government Accountability Office said the International Broadcasting Bureau failed to follow proper federal contract-awarding regulations when it authorized the no-bid deals totaling $1,069,451 for WAQI Radio Mambí 710 AM and TV Azteca.

El informe de 30 páginas es el primero de varios de la GAO sobre las operaciones de Radio y TV Martí, que trasmiten noticias, comentarios y programas de entretenimiento a Cuba bajo la dirección de la Oficina de Transmisiones a Cuba, con sede en Miami.

La Oficina de Fiscalización del Congreso (GAO) ha acusado a Radio y TV Martí de adjudicar contratos por valor de más de $1 millón a dos emisoras de Miami sin seguir los procedimientos normales de licitación.

En un informe dado a conocer el martes, la GAO afirmó que la Oficina de Trasmisiones Internacionales (IBB) no siguió las normas federales de adjudicación de contratos al autorizar acuerdos sin licitación por un valor total de $1,069,451 a WAQI Radio Mambí 710 AM y TV Azteca.

La GAO hizo público el informe como parte de una investigación más amplia en curso sobre las prácticas administrativas y de transmisión del controversial servicio de Radio y TV Martí. La GAO abrió la pesquisa en respuesta a una petición oficial del representante William D. Delahunt, demócrata por Massachusetts, presidente de la Subcomisión de Asuntos Extranjeros de la Cámara.

"La manera en que IBB concedió los contratos a Radio Mambí y TV Azteca no muestra prácticas comerciales sólidas'', afirma el informe de la GAO.

A few days ago, I read a letter from a Venezuelan father thanking Fidel Castro because his daughter had graduated as an M.D. in Cuba. It has been the policy of the Cuban regime to bring students from all Latin America to study in Cuba while Cuban citizens suffer all kinds of hardships, not excluding lacking the most basic things, like toilet paper, or any paper for that matter. I grew up under a system where a pen was a commodity, a notebook or a pencil sharpener luxuries. We all experienced the ration card. It allowed ridiculous rations of coffee, salt, sugar, and so on. The system has deteriorated to the point where more than two million Cubans have escaped, many of them risking- and losing- their lives in the Florida Straight or the Gulf of Mexico. Yet the propaganda machine lives on, feeding on the poor and ignorant of this world. Cubans were recently asked by dictator Raul Castro to "tighten their belts": that means more misery, more humiliation and violation of the most elementary human rights. In today's Cubanet, the following article narrates the poor condition of medicine in Cuba. The Marxist Paradise where Europeans go by the millions to take advantage of the cheapest prostitutes on earth. These tourists turn a blind eye to the suffering of most Cubans to feed their sexual hunger and depravity. While some pay to go, Cubans die to leave the Island-prison where all forms of freedom are suppressed. Homosexuals have been placed in concentration camps (UMAP), dissidents are persecuted and beaten, tortured and murdered in Castro's jails. A general and very real paranoia has taken over the land where any expression of dissent is expressed with hands signs. All this while foreigners study in luxury at the expense of the Cuban citizen. As well as a medical career, these young men and women from Latin America and Africa get a brainwash, thanks to the formidable propaganda machine the Communists have become masters in manipulating. Just look at the picture below and see what a hospital in Cuba looks like- a hospital for Cuban citizens, that is. One day, just like it happened with The Iron Curtain, the Cuban dictatorship will crumble and the truth will explode in the face of those who have supported this regime of terror.

LA HABANA, Cuba, julio (www.cubanet.org) - De los derechos sociales, tal vez el más caro sea la atención a la salud en cualquier parte del mundo. Garantizarlo implica un costo para el Estado, las instituciones sanitarias y para los propios pacientes y sus familiares. El gobierno de Cuba lo sabe y trata de garantizarlo a todos los niveles, pero no dispone de los recursos financieros recibidos desde la antigua Unión Soviética hasta 1990. El problema se acrecienta con la exportación de miles de profesionales que trabajan para el Estado en más de veinte naciones, lo cual desestructura los servicios médicos dentro del país, pues tan “humanitaria tarea” sacrifica a nuestros ciudadanos y multiplica los problemas del sector.

Las expectativas creadas por la propaganda oficial parecen un cuento. Los logros de los años ochenta son cosa del pasado. El sistema médico cubano involuciona, aunque las autoridades insisten en presentarlo como estandarte de legitimidad internacional. Basta con asistir a cualquier consultorio, clínica u hospital para percatarnos del caos, a pesar del esfuerzo del personal por cubrir las vacantes y las carencias técnicas y sanitarias.

Ni la solidaridad internacional ni la graduación de médicos emergentes en cualquier rincón del país resuelve el laberinto creado por las carencias y por la estrategia de exportación con fines políticos. Nuestros galenos prefieren cumplir “misión internacionalista” que atender a los familiares y vecinos; se sienten más reconocidos en otros países que en las instalaciones cubanas, donde reciben un salario simbólico y laboran sin los recursos imprescindibles.

I, Dolia Leal Francisco, 63 years old and a co-founder of the Damas de Blanco (Ladies in White); wife of NELSON AGUIAR RAMÍREZ, a prisoner of conscience of the “Group of the 75” since March of 2003, make an URGENT APPEAL on behalf of my husband who’s life is presently in grave danger.

Yesterday, my husband informed me during a prison visit that on the first day of the present month of July he was unexpectedly transferred from the small hospital of the Combinado del Este Prison in Havana, to a prison barrack that holds 184 common prisoners. Inside this barrack he is locked up in a small humid cell that has its floors continuously inundated with water due to the extensive leaks throughout the walls. This situation is worsening the asthma my husband suffers.

This prison cell is a sort of sealed box that only has limited ventilation coming through the barred door. It lacks a toilet and Nelson is supposed to go to the bathroom in a hole on the floor but, because he is unable to squat, he must go in a wooden box. In one word: my husband is enduring horrible conditions. Nelson Aguiar Ramírez is buried alive, evidence that they (Cuban authorities) want to eliminate him.

Cuba cracks down, rounds up dissidents before freeing most

HAVANA (AFP) - Cuba this week rounded up and detained more than 30 dissidents after accusing the United States of "instigating" opposition to the Communist regime, a top rights activist told AFP Saturday.

As many as 35 people were arrested and around 70 targeted in all, but most have now been freed, economist Martha Beatriz Roque of the rights group Agenda for the Transition said.

The regime's roundup was aimed at halting a meeting of pro-democracy advocates and clamping down on the dissidents' plan to mark the US Independence Day holiday on July 4th, she said.

"Almost all the people arrested have now been freed," she said.

Those who were not detained received warnings from the government, were placed under house arrest or barred from traveling to the capital, Havana, she said.

"The objective of the operation was to prevent a meeting of the Agenda group scheduled for Thursday, and to bar them from participating in the celebration of the United States' Fourth of July holiday," Roque said.

The Agenda meeting was cancelled and the July 4th party went ahead without incident at the home of Michael Parmly, the US diplomat and chief of mission at the US Interests Section (USIS) in Havana, Roque said.

Cuba's communist government has accused the USIS of serving as a "headquarters" for opposition groups, which are banned in Cuba, and says the US funnels money, communications and other forms of support to regime opponents via the Interests Section.

Wednesday, the government of President Raul Castro issued a statement saying acts of dissidence in the streets would not be tolerated and denounced "an escalation" of what it called "warped" opposition that was "instigated" by the US Interests Section.

Sólo dos diputadas del PSOE ha respondido al llamamiento de la Damas de Blanco después de que el pasado 21 de abril fueran desalojadas por la fuerza durante una de sus concentraciones pacíficas para solicitar la liberación de sus esposos, hijos o hermanos presos políticos desde marzo de 2003. Sí lo han hecho todas las diputados del PP, CiU y Rosa Díez, de UPyD

La iniciativa, que suscriben 49 diputadas, se produce después de que las Damas de Blanco expatriadas en España, Blanca Reyes, Gisela Delgado y Bertha Bueno se pusieran en contacto con las más de cien diputadas del Congreso solicitándoles solidaridad con las mujeres de los presos de conciencia cubanos.

En este sentido, la misiva remitida, que ha divulgado la Asociación Española Cuba en Transición (AECT), aprovecha también para "solicitar la inmediata liberación de los presos de la Primavera de Cuba: periodistas, bibliotecarios, pedagogos, activistas de derechos humanos que siguen condenados por ejercer libremente su profesión".

Cuba en Transición espera que los próximos días puedan ir uniéndose más diputadas de todos los grupos parlamentarios. Su director ejecutivo, Matías Jove, destacó que "la experiencia española y de los países del este ha mostrado que el apoyo internacional a los que están luchando por la libertad en la isla es crucial para que se pueda llegar a una transición pacífica a la democracia en la isla".

En su carta, las diputadas españolas expresan a las Damas de Blanco su "preocupación y admiración (...) por la magnífica labor que como madres, esposas, hermanas, mujeres todas en general, realizáis para pedir la liberación de vuestros familiares injustamente encarcelados durante la ola represiva de marzo de 2003".

Asimismo, las diputadas subrayan que "la defensa de los Derechos Humanos y las libertades públicas no conocen fronteras. Sobre todo, cuando se trata de Cuba, un país que admiramos por todos los vínculos que nos une". Por eso, añaden, "ahora más que nunca, queremos mostraros todo nuestro reconocimiento y mandaros todo nuestro apoyo".

Luis Cino: Las Anécdotas del Ché

LA HABANA, Cuba, junio (www.cubanet.org) - El Maestro no aspiraba a ser como Ché (aún no habían acuñado la frase que repiten cada día, antes de iniciar las clases, los pioneros cubanos). El joven campesino de la Sierra Maestra quiso ser nada menos que Ché Guevara. Fue uno de los primeros infatuados con su personalidad.

Algunos de sus compañeros del Ejército Rebelde decían que se parecía al actor mexicano Mario Moreno (Cantinflas). Otros lo confundían a veces con Ché. El Maestro quiso aprovechar su parecido con el apuesto revolucionario argentino para seducir muchachas de la zona. Incluso trataba de imitar su acento porteño mientras susurraba galanterías montunas. Hacerse pasar por Ché le costó la vida. Cuenta Carlos Franqui que lo fusilaron sin juicio, por orden de Fidel Castro y Ernesto Guevara.

La historia no recogió su nombre y apellidos, sino sólo el apodo. El Maestro fue uno de los 46 hombres fusilados en la Sierra Maestra durante el año 1957. La mayoría eran rebeldes. Muchos eran desertores, informantes, delatores o sospechosos de serlo. A otros los acusaron de robos, asesinatos y violaciones. Fue el duro método de los jefes revolucionarios para consolidar la guerrilla en la Sierra Maestra.

En su libro Pasajes de la Guerra Revolucionaria, Ché Guevara narra con escalofriante minuciosidad muchas de estas ejecuciones. Incluso refiere algunos de los frecuentes simulacros de fusilamiento con que aterrorizaban a los guerrilleros indisciplinados. Es la misma frialdad con que después de 1959 dirigió los pelotones de fusilamiento en La Cabaña en su más activo período.

No me gustan los héroes. No entiendo el fenómeno psicológico que es la fascinación mundial por Ché Guevara.

El 14 de junio hubiera cumplido 80 años. De no haber sido asesinado en Bolivia en 1967, hoy no sería el mito invencible en que lo convirtieron. El símbolo más impactante de la revolución cubana sería otro gerontócrata más en el Politburó; uno de los comandantes históricos de una revolución que hace piruetas para no caer en coma irreversible. Quizás sería el más culto. También el de línea más dura y menos apto para el mundo cínico y pragmático de hoy.

En cada nuevo aniversario de Ché Guevara vuelven a aflorar sus anécdotas, narradas por sus compañeros. Se supone que enaltezcan sus virtudes, pero consiguen el efecto contrario. Mientras más anécdotas conozco, más deshumanizado se me hace el personaje. No sé si pasará igual a los que llevan su rostro (según el lente de Korda) en la camiseta o tatuado en el brazo.

Pienso en la zoquetada con la que avergonzó ante las cámaras de la televisión al popular animador Germán Pinelli. Al calor de la admiración y el entusiasmo de los primeros tiempos, Pinelli lo llamó che, a la manera argentina. “Soy che sólo para mis amigos, para usted soy el Comandante Guevara”.

Poco antes de partir hacia Bolivia, algunos de sus compañeros invitaron a Ché a comer. Querían la mejor de las despedidas para el amigo que marchaba a una misión incierta. Consiguieron en la heladería Coppelia dos tinas de helado de fresa. Sabían que era su sabor preferido. La cena discurrió perfecta hasta el momento del postre. Cuando vio el helado se puso majadero. Quería saber cómo lo habían conseguido. Se negó a probarlo. Al final, se levantó de la mesa y se marchó furioso.

La próxima anécdota que referiré ocurrió en abril de 1961. Acaba de aparecer en la prensa cubana. Esclarece, al cabo de más de 47 años, por qué Ernesto Guevara no participó en los combates de Playa Girón. En aquel momento, Radio Swan afirmó que Fidel Castro había matado de un balazo a Ché Guevara durante una reyerta entre comandantes. En realidad, Ché recibió un balazo en la cara, pero de su propia pistola. Fue un accidente, dice la versión oficial. Algunos mal pensados creen que intentó suicidarse.

Lo atendieron en el hospital provincial de Pinar del Río, en medio de estrictas medidas de seguridad. El doctor Orlando Fernández Adán, médico y capitán de la columna militar de Ché, refirió el suceso cuatro décadas después al periódico Juventud Rebelde (Una herida y otra mentira, junio 10 de 2008):

La bala “le penetró por la mejilla izquierda, recorrió un pequeño tramo por dentro de la cara, atravesó el pabellón de la oreja y tropezó con el hueso mastoide”. No fue grave. No afectó arterias ni órganos ni mucho menos el cerebro”.

Meses después, Aleida March, su esposa, le dijo al doctor Fernández Adán que su marido comentaba que estaba muy satisfecho con sus cuidados médicos y que le estaba muy agradecido.

Refiere el doctor, hoy con 80 años: “Entonces le pregunté sonriente a Aleida: ¿Chica, y por qué el Ché no me lo dijo a mi? Aleida se rió y me respondió: Adán, porque si él te dice eso, si te elogia personalmente, deja de ser el Ché. ¿Tú no crees?”

Tratándose de Ché Guevara, vaya si lo creemos.

SANTA CLARA , CUBA- June 9th (Liset Zamora Carrandi /www.puenteinfocubamiami.org)- More than half a hundred inmates sleep on the floor at Camp Provario, which is a concentration and/or labor camp in Sancti Spiritus.

According to information provided by peaceful opponent Jorge Ramirez Calderon a member of the Democratic Party 30 of November “Frank Pais”, who went to visit a relative detained in said prison, he was able to confirm that he met 65 prisoners all of whom were sleeping on the floor due to lack of beds and mattresses.

Prison officials facing the complaints of relative of the inmates, stated that the inconvenience is due to a lack of resources.

One more year Cubans in Hudson County celebrate their heritage in the Desfile Cubano de New Jersey. It’s a celebration of our contribution to this country as well as a business opportunity for the organizers, who are also fervent patriots. Most Hudson County politicians are ready and willing to show their faces at the parade. Very few, like Union City Mayor Brian P. Stack is always there for the Cuban community in all events. Others show their faces in election time. Others having been in the White House for eight years have never cared to show up, not for the Cuba parade nor for any other parade. It is a festive time for the populace, always ready to welcome the festivities. It must be a new experience for the recent arrivals from Cuba, who have probably never seen a parade like this, where you can express yourself freely, or even in the middle of West New York, speak about the Liberation of West New York. Other politicians are Cuban Americans who condemned the parade last year, prohibited it to pass by its town, and today had the cara de palo (face of stick) to walk through the streets, almost against their will, certainly against their questionable patriotic convictions.
CUBAN PRIDE: The Old Cuba and The New Cuba: United under the Nation that sheltered its sons and daughters from tyranny, both united in The New Jersey Cuban Day Parade.

Since early this morning the famous Bergenline Avenue at the intersection of 45 Street: the heart of the Cuban Community in Union City, had a large crowd of Cubans and Latin Americans walking, shopping in the Avenue and waiting for the parade that was, by word of mouth, rumored to start at 5:00 PM (after being rumored to start at 4:00, then at 3:00, then at 2:00...). Some Cubans have brought beach chairs and conduct lively debates on the sidewalk. There’s a visible UC Police presence everywhere. There are groups of young people from Latin America and Cuba in colorful motorcycles parked along the Avenue. There is an old man with a Guayabera proudly smiles and looks at a young beautiful Cuban girl who passes by. Dominos in different colors are displayed at the now legendary El Waterloo store on the corner of 45 and Bergenline. By five o’clock the Cubans are out: there are thousands of them in the streets from West New York to Union City. They are the young rapper-looking kids, the trajeado family man or gavilán and the always beautiful and unique Cuban women, from all ages, waving Cuban flags, they have come this afternoon to reclaim the Avenue they rebuilt in the 70’s with their sweet and proud looks, with the hard work of their people.

There are many nationalities showing their pride in their colors. There are hundreds of dominicanos, boricuas, peruanos, and of every country in Latin America. I feel a strong sense of pride watching my compatriots in the streets and so many people supporting us. It’s Cuban pride day.

It's 6:55 PM and the crowds have grown larger. It's clear that this is one of most successful parades ever. La Flaca from El Gordo y La Flaca pass by. You can't even walk on Bergenline Avenue, that's how crowded it is. There must be thousands in the streets. The people have answered to the Cuban Community, which has been generous to all Latin Americans in this area.

La semana que concluye resultó escenario de la revelación de documentos que evidencias la conexión de la terrorista mafia gusano-yanqui de Miami, el gobierno de George W. Bush ─particularmente el Jefe de la Sección de Intereses de Norteamérica en Cuba (SINA)─ y los mercenarios que operan en la mayor de las Antillas ─en especial las denominadas Damas de Blanco.

Un total de tres espacios le dedicó a este asunto la Mesa Redonda, programa radio-televisivo que regularmente sale al aire en la tarde-noche cubana, a través de los cuales estudiosos del tema trajeron a colación pruebas contundentes de tal conexión. Por ejemplo, en una aparece un correo electrónico enviado por la señora Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello, alias “tia mcpato” (sic), en el que se pude leer:

“Para: ‘Juan Carlos Fuentes’ <flaviomaryjuanc@yahoo.com>

“El tipo está en desgracia [refiriéndose a uno de sus compinches] y va a estar más todavía. Vladimiro [Roca, otro de la misma calaña] le tiene puesto el pie encima y no se lo va a sacar, yo me sacrifico y lo ayudo porque es tremendo descarado. No es fácil esto la pila de descarados que hay viviendo a costillas nuestras” [del dinero enviado por el terrorista-mafioso-gusano-yanqui-recluso nombrado Santiago Álvarez Fernández-Magriñá ─ver: Algo muy podrido entre la mafia, los mercenarios y la SINA, www.granma.cu, 21/5/08].

Sin comentarios.

También la Mesa Redonda develó los estrechos e ilegales vínculos de la señora Marta Beatriz Roque Cabello con el mismísimo señor Michael Parmly, Jefe de la SINA en La Habana. Ello quedó ilustrado en el siguiente correo:

El cartero sale el 10 de mayo para Washington a problemas médicos y estará allí dos semanas. La dirección de la muchacha es: (….) Después que la llames me cuentas. Sin comentarios.

Entre tanto, una de las Mesa Redonda en cuestión exhibió certificados de las nóminas de pago a los mercenarios de Rescate Jurídico, la Organización No Gubernamental para asuntos “civiles” que encabeza el terrorista-mafioso-gusano-yanqui-recluso nombrado Santiago Álvarez Fernández-Magriñá. Puntualmente, en la lista de dichas nóminas aparecen varias de las llamadas Damas de Blanco, cuyas cabecillas gritan a los cuatro vientos que no reciben ayudas financieras procedentes del “Norte revuelto y brutal”.

En este orden de ideas, con la mayor naturalidad del mundo el demeritado mandatario W. Bush elogió la “valentía en las Damas de Blanco de Cuba” y luego certificó: “[…] Este mes, Berta [Soler, una Dama de Blanco] me dijo personalmente” [lo que se le ocurrió decir sobre los presos contrarrevolucionarios ─ver: Declaraciones del Presidente sobre Cuba
www.whitehouse.gov , 21/5/08].

“Estuvimos dando vueltas y a finales del mes de julio, en el marco de una visita que hice en Washington, concerté toda una serie de reuniones con fundaciones, think tanks y grupos de apoyo del en torno al Partido Demócrata y Republicano de los Estados Unidos. […]. En efecto, en aquel momento hablamos de reclutar unas 40 mujeres activistas liberales europeas (vinculadas, por lo tanto, al LYMEC) que desarrollaran un proyecto de apoyo al colectivo disidente de las Damas de Blanco que habían ganado el premio Sajarhov de la Unión Europea el año anterior, y sobre las cuales teníamos un interés particular de dar difusión a su causa” [Convergencia preparó el "show" de Cuba en Washington ─www.kaosenlared.net, 17.12.2007].

Así, carece de exageración resumir que hasta las Damas de Blanco son mercenarias de W. Bush.

U.S. Ambassador to Cuba, Michael Parmly, impersonates a Cuban "Lady in White" impersonating an Argentine "Mother of the Plaza de Mayo"

There are so many things wrong with this story that it would be hard to know where to begin, so let's start with Tuesday's headline in El Nuevo Herald, the Spanish language fiefdom of the Miami Herald, which says "Dissident Cuban Woman Says Government Hounds but Doesn't Allow a Defense."

Now, aside from the striking fact that the Cuban woman in question, Martha Beatriz Roque, is given a free platform by a major U.S. daily from which to defend herself (and doesn't) - something which is never offered those hounded by the United States government, Machetera's going to take a wild guess here and say that if the Cuban government didn't also invite her to appear on the Cuban political television program, Mesa Redonda (Round Table) where her grasping emails were unveiled, demanding payment for services rendered, it would have been to save her from being killed by the audience. Because Martha doesn't just take money from anybody. She takes it from the ugliest people - Santiago Alvarez, the benefactor of Luis Posada Carriles, who blew up a Cuban passenger plane in 1976, killing all 73 people on board.

Alvarez, you'll recall, spirited the aging terrorist Posada Carriles from Mexico to safe haven in the United States, aboard his vessel, the Santrina - a felony, incidentally, but one that has so far not been prosecuted since the government has been otherwise occupied slapping him on the wrist for his unusual weapons collection: "machine guns, rifles, C-4 explosive, dynamite, detonators, a grenade launcher and ammunition," according to the Miami Herald.

Fidel Castro was the first person to point out that Posada Carriles had arrived on the Santrina, not as Posada Carriles claimed, on a bus crossing the Mexico/Texas border, but the U.S. press ran with the bus story for a very long time anyway. It worked out well in the end, as the lie about the bus trip was what the government finally used to charge and minimally sentence Posada Carriles instead of complying with international law and turning him over for extradition to Venezuela to be prosecuted in the 1976 plane bombing.

When not dialing for dollars (or specifically, euros) for herself and others, Martha apparently busied herself writing to the judge overseeing Alvarez's prosecution, which might have paid off, had the letter not been lost at the U.S. Interests Section in Havana. Martha understood the consequences and wrote to her Miami confidante and intermediary for the terrorists, Carmen Machado,

"It's a serious problem, since [Cuban] Security will surely bring out the original letter on Mesa Redonda, or in a book, or maybe they'll bring me back to trial for it, since they've never had any proof against me despite all the years I've lived. I wanted you to know and for you to tell my friend, of whom I'm also very proud."

Martha's not the only one taking money from such despicable people. The U.S. government p.r. creation, the "Ladies in White," (Damas de Blanco) takes terrorist money too. The "Ladies in White" are the Cuban wives of other so-called dissidents who don white clothing and head-scarves in the most cynical appropriation of the memory of the Argentine Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo who marched to demand the return of their children, abducted in the U.S. supported military dictatorship there.

The p.r. geniuses who thought up the "Ladies in White" have counted on a short public attention span and a compliant press, but Hebe de Bonafini, a real mother from Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo was perfectly blunt about the insult in an interview with Salim Lamrani in 2005:

Lamrani: The Cuban authorities arrested and harshly sentenced various people to prison terms, which the international press calls "dissidents," for having collaborated with the economic sanctions against Cuba and for receiving subsidies from the United States. The French press has often alluded to the "Ladies in White," the family of these "dissidents," who march in Havana to ask for the liberation of their family members. Several media have referred to these people as the "Cuban Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo." What does Hebe de Bonafini, President of the Association of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo think?

De Bonafini: First, let me say that the Plaza de Mayo is in Argentina and nowhere else. Our white headscarf symbolizes life, while the women you speak about to me represent death. This is the most important and most substantial difference that should be noted by these journalists. We are not going to accept their being compared to us, or that our symbols be used to trample upon us. We are in complete disagreement with them.

However, they are demanding the release of their family members. Doesn't that seem legitimate?

These women defend United States terrorism. They defend the world's foremost terrorist country, that with the most blood on its hands, that which launches the most bombs, that invades the most countries, that imposes the strongest economic sanctions against others. We are talking about a country that is responsible for the crimes of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

These women don't realize that the struggle of the Mothers of the Plaza de Mayo symbolizes love for our abducted children, killed by tyrants imposed by the United States. Our battle represents the Revolution, the one that our sons and daughters wanted to make. Their struggle is different, since they defend the subversive policies of the United States that only contain oppression, repression and death.

What, according to you, are the interests being defended by the "Cuban dissidents?"

The interests of the United States, of course. You'd have to be blind or dishonest not to see it. You only have to read the reports published by the U.S. State Department, in which it is said that a $50 million budget is earmarked for the fabrication of an opposition in Cuba. The information is public, and it's available. The dissidents themselves, as they are called, meet with Mr. James Cason [the U.S. representative preceding Michael Parmly in Havana] and are under his command. These dissidents have openly supported the maintenance of economic sanctions that so harm the Cuban people. Who, besides the United States, supports those economic sanctions? Tell me!

Now, to some of the sordid details about the current transactions.

Machetera won't bother to translate all the emails from Martha (Martuchita) to her pals in Miami, but she will make a couple of observations.

In his Monday press conference on the affair, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack played stupid.

He claimed repeatedly not to understand the "mechanics" of how the terrorists' money got to Cuba (inside the pocket of the number one U.S. diplomat, Michael Parmly) and insisted that international law was not violated. Perhaps not, but U.S. law was, even if McCormack refused to admit it. It's a law with which sadly, Machetera has a personal acquaintance, and it has to do with George W. Bush's brilliant humanitarian edict that no more than $300 per quarter can be sent to a Cuban citizen, and only by a family member in the United States. When you go to Western Union, you fill out an affidavit that is filed with the Office of Foreign Assets Control, swearing you haven't sent more than the maximum permitted, every single time. But that's just for the common folk. Martuchita's uncommon, and so are her friends.

Carmen Machado, or alternately Carmenchu or Carmita, Alvarez's message-girl who was in frequent contact with Martha was both arrogant enough and evidently stupid enough to use her work email, Carmen.Machado@HCAhealthcare.com for the correspondence. Machado is (appropriately enough) a Financial Coordinator at Aventura Hospital between Miami and Fort Lauderdale.

Aventura, as Machado's email address suggests, is owned by Hospital Corporation of America, "the largest private operator of health care facilities in the world," where Senator Bill Frist made his fortune. Frist dumped his shares in a very timely manner, just prior to the release of "disappointing earnings" figures, claiming that because he was running for president, he wanted to avoid any conflict of interest. He was joined in this clairvoyance by numerous executives, who unfortunately, were not in the presidential race. Shareholders sued the company and in August 2007, the lawsuit was settled, with HCA paying $20 million to shareholders.

LA CUBA QUE QUIERE RAUL

Los pocos cubanos que tienen con qué, pueden comprar DVDs., computadores, televisores y otros electrónicos y electrodomésticos… Sin embargo, las heroicas Damas de Blanco recibieron empellones para dejar claro que puede haber cambios pero, como dijera el propio Raul, con más orden y disciplina... por supuesto.

Se quita la prohibición a los cubanos de usar los hoteles turísticos… de permitir el derecho de producir a los agricultores… y los permisos para viajar al extranjero… No obstante, el gobierno cubano hace hasta donde puede para bloquear la salida, para recibir un premio internacional, de la periodista Yoani Sánchez, autora del popular Blog “Generación Y”…El camino es claro: Reestructuración económica pero sin la glasnost de Gorvachev, que era la apertura de los medios de comunicación, con transparencia informativa y permitiendo la libertad de expresión y política. Raul cree en los cambios en la economía hasta donde sea necesario… sin que se altere la hegemonía política. El modelo para él, es el chino, diciendo que se hará un “socialismo más perfecto”, pero que en el fondo no es otra cosa que una dictadura salvaje, violadora de los derechos humanos, con abismales diferencias de clases y sin participación de sindicatos que protejan los derechos de los trabajadores. Todo dentro de la tiranía, nada fuera de ella.

Cuba acusa a Damas de Blanco de ser "punta de lanza" de EEUU

LA HABANA (AFP) — Cuba acusó el jueves a Estados Unidos de "fabricar y promover" la "contrarrevolución" y de tener como "punta de lanza" a las Damas de Blanco, quienes rechazaron la acusación y denunciaron una campaña de "desprestigio" del gobierno contra su movimiento por los presos políticos.

En un comunicado, la cancillería arremetió contra la disidencia en reacción a una nota difundida en La Habana en la que Washington "deploró" el desalojo por la fuerza de una manifestación de las Damas de Blanco -esposas de presos políticos-, que el lunes protestaban en las inmediaciones de la Plaza de la Revolución.

Cuba "acusa al Gobierno de los Estados Unidos de fabricar y promover estas y otras provocaciones contrarrevolucionarias y las consiguientes campañas mediáticas", según la nota oficial, publicada en el diario Granma.

La Habana reafirmó "su derecho a impedir, neutralizar y responder a estas acciones provocadoras concebidas, financiadas y estimuladas por el Gobierno de los Estados Unidos".

La cancillería cubana dijo que las Damas de Blanco, premio Sajarov-2005 del Parlamento Europeo, fueron elegidas "punta de lanza" de Washington en Cuba, y mencionó que una de ellas recibió una carta de apoyo del presidente George W. Bush y otra fue recibida en la Casa Blanca el 24 de enero.

"Con el epíteto de 'punta de lanza', el gobierno busca desprestigiarnos, distorsionar la idea que el pueblo se ha hecho de nosotras, que no nos vea como mujeres que reclaman la libertad de sus familiares", declaró a la AFP Laura Pollán.

"No somos políticas ni recibimos órdenes de nadie, todo lo hacemos por amor y por dolor", apuntó Pollán, una de las líderes del grupo, creado luego de que 75 opositores fueron detenidos y condenados en 2003 a penas de seis a 28 años de cárcel.

En su nota, la cancillería afirmó que Bush "reconoció abiertamente" en un discurso el 7 de marzo "el papel de este grupúsculo como instrumento priorizado de su política contra Cuba".

"El problema es que Damas de Blanco ha alcanzado un reconocimiento dentro y fuera de Cuba y el gobierno quiere como desprestigiarnos, no es nada nuevo", dijo la activista Miriam Leyva.

Según el Gobierno, la Sección de Intereses de Washington en La Habana (SINA) es "el estado mayor" de la disidencia y denunció que por su medio se entregan recursos a los opositores para su labor, como servicios de internet, equipos electrónicos, pegatinas, camisetas y "literatura con contenido subversivo".

En un hecho inusual, la televisión cubana difundió el martes un video en el que vincula al grupo de mujeres con el jefe de la SINA, Michael Parmly, y con la congresista republicana de origen cubano Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, y fue publicada una nota en la que el Gobierno advierte que no tolerará "provocaciones".
