Midnight showing last night....this morning? Believe the hype -- The Dark Knight was an amazing movie. How rarely does a sequel surpass its predecessor? Very rarely. Heath Ledger's performance was pretty incredible, to say the least. I was huge fan of Jack Nicholson and the 1989 version, but Heath Ledger is definitely the real Joker.

The film makes all four previous Batman movies look like a complete joke (no pun intended). Remember Batman & Robin? Unfortunately, so do I. What a mess. Kudos to Christopher Nolan for reviving the franchise and finally making a Batman movie the way it was supposed to be made.

CLICHE, AND UNORIGINAL, are words I will use to describe this review NOT this movie.
Like every other person that has seen this movie, I loved it. It is the greatest superhero movie of all time, far surpassing my favorite hero flick, Spiderman. In fact, this movie transcends the whole superhero genre. It's more than just a superhero flick, it's a detective story and instead of having men in fedoras, femme fatales, and obscure villains, we have a man in a cape, and a psychopathic villain with a clown face.

The movie opens with a bang, literally, as we fall upon a bankrobbery that ends in bloodshed. This is where we get a first glimpse at Heath Ledger's "role." (More on that later) Without spoiling too much, which I would never do, he terrorizes the city while the infamous Batman attempts to foil his plans.

The movie is epic in scope, it holds it holds itself higher than any movie I have seen it recent years, and it never brings itself down. The prequel, Batman Begins, is like the ugly duckling to this masterpiece, and that movie was fuckin' amazing. Is it long? Yes, it's a whopping 2 hours and 32 minutes, which is unprecedented for a superhero flick. Would I prefer it to be shorter? Abso-fuckin-lutely not. There isn't a shot, a scene, a line of dialogue that I would change to shorten this film. In fact I probably wouldn't be upset if there was a ten minute scene of Heath Ledger watching duck's walk across the street.

Christain Bale, is always good, and this film is no different. His role is definitely toned down from Batman Begins, not from his role as Batman, but his role as Bruce Wayne.

In Batman Begins, he was still trying to figure out who he is, and what he was, was a playboy. There are scenes in this movie where his whole playboy facade shine through, but my feeling is when he does these things it is just to make Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal), his true love, jealous.

Aaron Eckhartas Harvey Dent, is equally impressive and at the same time truly heartbreaking. His origin story differs from that of the comics, but the one Nolan employ's makes his role seem that much more real.

Now, for the real treat, Heath Ledger. I'm going to let my inner-woman shine through and tell you that I got chocked up at the end when I realized that I'll never see this man in another movie ever again. He was a deeply under appreciated actor, and his filmography is both diverse and brilliant. His pre-mature death was one of the saddest times of this year, and blooming actor who was finally being seen as a great actor. Like James Dean, and River Pheonix, his untimely death has had an enormous impact on the film industry.

His "role", I'll explain the quotations, is the highest point on an Everest sized movie. I slam down the quotations because calling what he did a "role" is putting down what Ledger did. He didn't play, the Joker, he was the Joker. Throughout the movie I tried to find some remnant of the actor I knew underneath that frightening makeup, and I tell you, he isn't there. He steals every scene he is in, he is scary and disturbing and I truly believed that there is some psychopathic clown faced maniac out there.

My favorite scene is when the Joker's face turn to disappointment when he finally realizes everything he is trying to prove is absolutely wrong. He thinks that in every single person there is bad, that there is evil, but when his ultimate social experiment goes awry he realizes that people are good, and people don't hurt people just for the fun of it.

One last thing on ledger, everything he does, the way he walks, the way he talks, the way he fights, the way he stands, the way he smooths his hair, the way he shoots, the way he licks his lips while he talks, is The Joker. Ledger disappears into something evil and sinister.

A final note on this film, if you go to the theater to see an upbeat fun superhero movie, go see Hancock (which has a pretty dark ending). Because the Dark Knight is not a fun, upbeat superhero movie. It is dark, bleak, and realistic which goes against any conventionality that was thought to be needed in such a film.

Director: Christopher Nolan

Starring: Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal

Screenplay: Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan

Running Time: 152 minutes (that's 2 hours 32 minutes, in case you can't convert)

It would be difficult to find a movie this anticipated in recent years. The overwhelming, somewhat surprising success of Batman Begins, the tragic passing of Heath Ledger, and what I am crowning the (any of the many) greatest trailer of all time have lead to the anticipation and hype for this film being unrivaled by any that I may have ever seen. And the movie strikes gold, dare I say even surpassing the hype and my lofty, seemingly out of reach expectations.

Christopher Nolan is not new to directing spectacular films. Memento (perhaps my favorite movie of the decade so far), Batman Begins and The Prestige are all fantastic, and The Dark Knight will undoubtedly be headlining his career marquee as he moves on. Nolan engages us into the developmental scenes, creating an atmosphere so tense, so unbearable that we cannot look away. The action sequences are gripping and realistic, limiting the use of CGI to enhancement instead of creation (please take note Spielberg). The pacing makes this 2 hour 35 minute movie seemingly take an hour. You long for more, you want to stay in the theater another hour, or two. But only the theater, you don't dare want to make your way into Nolan's world. Nolan has created a Gotham that seems so vast and empty, yet so impossible to escape.

The film stems from a screenplay written by the brothers Nolan. After writing the short story that lead to Memento, brother Jonathan has a free pass to do what he pleases in my books. They have succeeded where other movies have failed; the multi-character plot that doomed the Spiderman franchise is worked to perfection, the unworldly gadgetry that makes some Bond movies feel cartoonish is simply another aspect of the world created in The Dark Knight. The script is fairly loyal (from what I've researched and read) to the story of Batman. The Nolan's give us characters that are deep, thoughtful and though-provoking; each is developed well enough to have an entire movie based around. But none of this could have been translated to film if it weren't for the amazing performances from top to bottom.

The movie revolves around Batman and The Joker, but the film could not have worked without an array of supporting performers to help carry the massive load asked upon them. Morgan Freeman is his usual, solid, mild-mannered self as Lucias Fox. He gives you the impression that he knows more about Batman than even Bruce Wayne himself, and perhaps that is a good thing. Michael Caine is easily the most client-involved butler in the history of cinema, and gives another rock-solid performance as Alfred. Gary Oldman was especially good in transitioning Lt. James Gordon to a larger role than his previous in Batman Begins. If our sympathies are to be directed at one character, it is undoubtedly him. Maggie Gyllenhaal is a nice step (LEAP) up from Katie Holmes as Rachel Dawes, who was, in my opinion, the largest blemish of Batman Begins.

The only character question mark that I really had going into the film was Aaron Eckhart as Harvey Dent/TwoFace (if this was a spoiler for you, you fail). Eckhart brings a necessary likeability to Harvey Dent, after all, he is the face(s) (<== pun!) of a "new" Gotham. I am a fan of Eckhart, based solely on Thank You For Smoking, and he hits a winner here with Harvey Dent. His true talents emerge as the movie progresses, but this is obvious, because, after all, Harvey does undergo some changes. I look forward to seeing more of TwoFace in the next Batman film (assuming Nolan signs on for another). In Harvey Dent we see a great sense of rightousness, a well-intended man who cannot be corrupted. This quickly and seamlessly shifts to a man driven by vengeance, a twisted, skewed view of his new reality, and most importantly: chance.

I stand by my statement that Christian Bale is the best Bruce Wayne ever put on screen. He singlehandedly revived a failing franchise in Batman Begins, and has now cemented himself as the top Caped Crusader. There is something inherently humorous about Batman's need to disguise his voice (cue Bale's deep, intimidating Batman voice here), but while this was a distraction for the other Batmen (?) it is simply another aspect of Bale's character. Through both Bruce Wayne and Batman we see that Batman is not our common superhero. He is hanging by a thread between his own views of what is right and borderline insanity. Batman has flaws that Bale has brought to the forefront, which is primarily what sets Batman apart from run-of-the-mill superheroes. Bale is able to bring justification and motive to the over-the-top actions of Bruce Wayne and the capers of Batman. There is an inherent struggle for Wayne, and this struggle is exploited to the fullest by The Joker.

Which brings us to the star of the show: The Joker. And let's just say, he wouldn't have it any other way. There couldn't have been more buzz surrounding this character and its (note its, not his) portrayal by (the late, tragically) Heath Ledger. And all skeptics should have been quieted mere minutes into the movie. The Joker gives us what may be the most memorable, haunting entrance of any character in the history of cinema (there I go, throwing that phrase around again); and let's just say he does a pretty nifty magic trick with a pencil. But this is just the beginning. We have seen other Joker renditions, but this is far and away the greatest. I am as big of a Nicholson fan as you will find, but Ledger's portrayal makes Jack's seem downright juvenile. This Joker is undoubtedly insane, twisted, demented, and psychotic, and most terrifying of all, he is the most intellegent man in Gotham. To say he is one step ahead is an understatement. All of this, all of his actions, with no apparent motivation. Chaos, anarchy are his motivation. And that's the scariest thought of all. With his patented, cynical grin, The Joker creates a parallel between himself and Batman. After all, the Bat is just "a freak! like me..." At points throughout the film, I found myself laughing along with the maniacal joker, becoming a part of his sick, twisted games. The mere fact that I was that enthralled by a character is a nod to Ledger, whose performance will become as, if not more legendary than villains past such as Hannibal Lector. I find that my review cannot do this performance justice at all, and Batman fan or not, Ledger's performance has brought this film, and perhaps this genre, to a whole different level. It's not too much to call The Joker dark poetry in motion.

Going along with all from above, credit must be given to James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer as well, for putting together a demonic, melodic score to accompany this movie of just the same.

In summation, this movie does what we all hoped it would do. It transcends the comic book adaptation genre, moving into waters less explored. If lumped into the superhero category, it is hands down the greatest film of its kind, but that would seem to hold it back. The Dark Knight should be included amongst the tops of all time Epic Crime films. I'm thinking Heat, Goodfellas, films of that nature. Also, I'd like to throw my name into the "Heath Ledger for Best Supporting Actor" ring. Not to commemorate him for his untimely passing, but to honor a performance that will go down in history as one of the most haunting, spectacular of all time. See this movie once, twice, three times. It is the best of the year. But feel free to laugh along with The Joker, why so serious?

5 out of 5 stars

Oh man. I got goosebumps just recalling this film.

Last night I saw the midnight screening of the Dark Knight at the new GardenWalk in Anaheim; it was sensational. I'm sure there will be review after review praising this film and I'm sure I'll agree with what is said. I'm not going to write about the film in general. The question I'd like to raise is this: is Christopher Nolan's Joker the greatest villain in Cinema History? Let's go through and check:

Darth Vader - is now just a winy teenager. Even without the destruction of the Darth Vader character via the new 3 Star Wars episodes this Joker would give him a run for his money.

the Terminator - Unfortunately he's only been a villain 33.4% of the time (he's the hero of the 2nd and 3rd film). He falls behind the Nolan's Joker as well.

Silas Lynch - from The Birth of a Nation, 1915. While he is worth mentioning, he falls behind the Joker as well - he's not near as disturbing as the Joker, nor is he as evil.

the Wicked Witch of the West - she's been made into the misunderstood good guy by "Wicked."

Phyllis Dietrichson - in Double Indemnity, 1944. It's true she's crafty and can't be trusted but compared to the Joker she's like Mother Teresa. She causes nowhere near the level of destruction, and by comparison, she is not feared. The Joker strikes terror into th hearts of an entire city.

Henry F. Potter - from It's a Wonderful Life, 1946. Just nowhere near the same level - I think you'd all agree.

Mrs. Iselin - from Manchurian Candidate, 1962. She's on the list because she's twisted and devious - the Joker has her beat in both categories.

Catwoman - Batman Returns, 1992. Catwoman is probably the most comparable person on the list simply because she too comes from the Batman universe. The Joker will leave you disturbed and rattled. Catwoman is more of a typical superhero villain - almost playful. Joker wins, hands down.

Out of all the villains I can think of, the only one who truly rivals Nolan's Joker is Hannibal Lecter. It's a very close call but there are a few things to consider: think about the amount of havoc the Joker brought upon the city. Think about the volume of people who were terrified of him. Think about his motives. The most frightening thing about the Joker is that he really does not have any motives - he's just a "dog barking at cars." He loves doing what he does. Though it's a close call, I believe the Joker wins again.

Heath Ledger was perfect and I'm not exaggerating. It's fair to say (while we are on the Hannibal subject) that he gave an "Anthony Hopkins" worthy performance - he'll go down in history.

So that's my point - I think a strong case could be made for the Nolan Joker to be the greatest villain of all time. What say you?

-David May

I was awakened at 4 a.m. There seemed to be 100 or more vehicles parked in my neighbor's drive with their headlights turned on and all pointing in the direction of our house. What's going on? The lights were extremely bright. Very white. It hurt my eyes. Headlights flashed on - then off. A second of complete darkness.

It took 30 minutes for my sleep-fuddled mind to realize - it wasn't headlights. It was lightning. The complete darkness was because the power was out. The 3 dusk-to-dawn lights were off. I had to go to the bathroom. The house was in darkness - but - I reasoned, the lightning would light my way. My luck. The lightening stopped as soon as I groped my way to the kitchen.

I banged and crashed into everything. Why does the furniture in your own home seem to jump out and attack when the electricity is off? There was a heavy downpour of rain. Oh, great. At 5 a.m. I have to put something in the mail box. A neighbor is picking it up at 5:30 a.m. on his way to work. I wasn't keen on going out in that downpour.

Walking back from the mailbox, I noticed a 3 pound spider in the corner of the door frame. 'I'm going back to bed.' I told the ugly thing. 'When I get up - I'm going to kill you. You have 3 hours to pray.' Geesh! The spiders around here are getting big enough to shoot.

Christopher Nolan is an amazing director/screenwriter and it just shows up in this film, with him firing on all cylinders.

I will get what many people want to know out of the way; how good is Heath Ledger? He is so good that Jack Nicholson (who played the Joker in the 1989 Batman film) performance will be laughable (pun?) when looked back on. He consumes the role. We aren’t looking at Heath Ledger playing the Joker; we’re just looking at the Joker. We are looking at one of the most vile and disgusting of human beings to ever grace the Earth. He is an expert manipulator, and an incredibly intelligent man. And despite how good Ledger is, the Joker isn’t a complex character. His background or his motives are not mentioned in the movie (the Joker constantly lying about how he received his scars) and they don’t need to be. They don’t have a place in the film. The Joker is depicted as a force. An evil force that will tear through the city, claiming many lives in the process, all with no motive whatsoever. Simply, the Joker is the face of evil. And Ledger plays the role is such a vicious and chilling manner, that he will definitely be posthumously nominated for Best Supporting Actor. It’s going to happen and if it doesn’t, there will be an enormous outcry. Throughout the film, the Joker claims that he and Batman “are destined to do this forever,” and it’s a huge shame that with the loss of Ledger that this prospect will never be realized. Because there is no way anyone could ever replace him.

It is hard for anyone to live up to Ledger in the film, but the rest of the cast try their best, and many succeed. Aaron Eckhart, who apart from a few movies was a fairly unknown actor, has now been officially cast into the spotlight. And deservedly so. Eckhart truly is fantastic as Gotham City’s District Attorney “Harvey Dent,” and as be becomes to be known later on in the movie “Two-face.” Christopher Nolan had claimed that Dent’s story served as the backbone of the film, and you can really see that come to life. Dent’s story is told in rich detail from hero status as Gotham City’s “White Knight,” to his tragic fall to become “Two-face.” This is a man who is consumed by the evil that surrounds him. The Joker turns once a great man to insanity, where every decision is based on the flip of a coin. Eckhart handles the role wonderfully, and any one who wasn’t entirely sure who he was before the film will be asking the question, “Who is that guy?”

Now that I’ve discussed the two villains in the film, it’s time to take a step back and look at Christian Bale. Honestly, it was Batman’s time to shine in Batman Begins, and this film has left the character development to the two villains. And that IS NOT a bad thing. Batman did not need any more development, and it’s clear Chris Nolan purposely left that out. And while Bale is most definitely not the stand out this time around (how could he be?) he is still very solid in the role.

I’m not going to say Maggie Gyllenhaal is amazing, because she wasn’t. I still think that he was better than Katie Holmes, and she did her job pretty well. Definitely the best suited person to play Rachel. Michael Caine was pretty solid as Alfred yet again, as was Morgan Freeman. But for a little bit I want to talk about Gary Oldman, for those of you who don’t know is Commissioner Gordon. His character is also quite a bit more developed, and I began to see how strong his performance really is in the movie.

But these performances would be irrelevant if it wasn’t for the behind the scenes work. That is, Chris Nolan. I mentioned him a few times, but now it’s time to say more. For starters, the script is amazing (written with his brother Jonathon). There are so many twists and turns throughout the story, and the dialogue truly is expertly written. The whole film from is start is just so well paced and directed, that you can see how much of a master he is. The action scenes are a step up from Batman Begins, the cinematography in some parts is truly beautiful. Gotham actually feels like a city now. An open, spare city which it did not feel like in Batman Begins.

This isn’t your normal superhero film. That’s also what makes this so special. The stakes are so much higher. Choices have to be made. People will and do die. This movie is about the choices we have to make and the consequences as a result. It’s a film that concerns moral issues over anything else; doing what has to be done, the costs of that and how low one is willing to sink to stop what’s coming. I’ve also heard mentioned that this could be called a crime drama, which is most definitely true as well.

I’ve gone on for too long. But I really felt I needed to. The Dark Knight is an amazing film. It is a masterpiece. No other word to describe it. Amazingly acted, written, directed, filmed etc. What more else do you need? If you haven’t, go see this movie. If you don’t, all you’re doing is missing out on seeing one of the greatest films of the decade. And that is summing it up mighty quickly.

Have you ever looked closely at gemstones? They are like small worlds with their own character and each is unique in its patterns, shape and internal beauty. Whilst texture often only relates to the ‘feel’ I can often get the effect of texture from the look of a stone.

The pattern of the stone, perhaps it is orbicular, banded or variegated. The stone could be transparent, translucent or opaque. The colour may be solid or shaded. All of these factors build to a visual texture of depth even though you know the actual surface will be cool and smooth. This ability makes jewellery very tactile. People want to FEEL it.

There are stones that do have a different surface texture of course. Lava, for example is aerated and pitted. Some jaspers feel almost like cold velvet. Tumbled stones are smooth but may have pits and bumps across their surface. Faceted stones are often hard and almost sharp along their edges. Pearls and organic gemstones such as amber and shell, have beautiful surface textures caused directly by nature, even though they may be more fully revealed by man’s intervention.

Adding levels of textural interest into jewellery is possible by mixing the smooth with rough, the dark with the light, the patterns with the plain, lustrous with matte. Be adventurous and experiment - you never know what brilliant amalgamation could emerge.

First off, let me give my take on "The Dark Knight".

Good flick. Riveting. Dramatic. Suspenseful.

Kudos to all the performers. The director and writer. Even the cinematographer.

Good job. Very good job.

...but you seized Batman, made him real and stuck him in Gotham City forever.

And this may cost DC and Warner Bros down the line.

See... "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" are great movies.

But they are so dark. So dense. So rooted in realism that it would actually have to take a huge suspension of belief in order to buy that Bruce Wayne fights crime in Gotham, while a state or so away Superman poses as Clark Kent. Or J'onn J'onnz as Martian Manhunter. Or Wonder Woman doing her thing. Or The Flash doing HIS thing.

See... Marvel realized the error of their ways, having separated the universes of their characters for 7 years at different studios.

Now, under their own studio banner, they started off the summer with "Iron Man" and followed up with "The Incredible Hulk", rooted them in a pseudo-reality that could be believed with excellent casting... but left the idea of the interconnected universe in our minds.

DC wants to do that, but has to contend with an excellent portrayal of their meal ticket character (Batman) in not one, but two movies with a huge following.

"The Dark Knight" deals with so much carnage and chaos that were all these heroes to exist in one universe, why wouldn't Superman or the Flash come to the aid of the citizens of Gotham?

Wonder Woman and 'nem could have easily stopped the Joker cold way before he could put his plan into full gear.

...

But going back to the new flick. I DID enjoy it. Immensely.

But Marvel has me gassed to see them uncover the story of Thor and Captain America and see them team up with Iron Man and War Machine under SHIELD direction to stop The Hulk... then all of them team up against The Ten Rings and/or Red Skull operating under the guise of... whatever.

It'd be a fun ride, where "The Dark Knight" is such a dark, twisty piece of work... I can't say I had fun watching it Like.. I don't think it'd be a good date movie. Or something to show to the kids. (How ARE they gonna sell those action figures, anyway?)

Congrats to Christopher Nolan for bringing an Oscar-worthy Batman series to the table, but I'm a little more amped personally to see what Marvel has in store for us.

Why? Because Batman cannot set foot outside of Gotham City, nor can any of the outside superpowered DC characters step foot inside this Gotham City.

Good job painting yourselves into a corner, DC/Warner Bros.

---

Film rating: A

Long-term decision rating: FAIL

Imperdible.

I trust Rollin Stone mag, which is why I'm gonna post their review.

Heads up: a thunderbolt is about to rip into the blanket of bland we call summer movies. The Dark Knight, director Christopher Nolan's absolute stunner of a follow-up to 2005's Batman Begins, is a potent provocation decked out as a comic-book movie. Feverish action? Check. Dazzling spectacle? Check. Devilish fun? Check. But Nolan is just warming up. There's something raw and elemental at work in this artfully imagined universe. Striking out from his Batman origin story, Nolan cuts through to a deeper dimension. Huh? Wha? How can a conflicted guy in a bat suit and a villain with a cracked, painted-on clown smile speak to the essentials of the human condition? Just hang on for a shock to the system. The Dark Knight creates a place where good and evil — expected to do battle — decide instead to get it on and dance. "I don't want to kill you," Heath Ledger's psycho Joker tells Christian Bale's stalwart Batman. "You complete me." Don't buy the tease. He means it.

“It just rained,” I tell her. “You might not want to go out there.”
She tosses her head and ignores me. “I need a smoke.”
I was fifteen when I met Amy, a girl with dark hair and bad skin and an apathetic demeanor that hung around her like a group of screaming teenage girls flocking to a rock star.
She saunters in front of me as we walked to the stern, swinging her skirt-covered ass from side to side like Marilyn Monroe. Not used to this kind of thing, I make a valiant attempt at keeping my gaze straight ahead rather than at a 45 degree angle. She looks back languidly, half-smiling in a teasing fashion.
As we slide the door back, ocean mist sprays across the deck, moistening our faces. Amy slinks over to a white box that loudly proclaims LIFE VESTS in bold block capital letters and plunks herself down on the damp container. She takes a pale blue lighter and a small carton with one cigarette in it out of her purse. I lean on the railing and gaze out at the sea.
The waves look like a roiling field of glass, a breathtaking collection of greens and blues and gray sea foam. There is no land for miles around us, no sight of any other naval vessels. As I’m searching for signs of marine life, perhaps a shark lurking just beneath the surface, I can hear the scratch of a lighter behind me.
There’s a thin, flaring hiss as the cigarette ignites, and I hear her sharp intake of breath as she takes a drag.
I glance back to her as the lighter’s scratching hits my ears again.
She’s staring, transfixed, at the cigarette carton in her hand as it’s engulfed in flames. The fire is swirling, spreading along the pack like creeping, debilitating disease. I can see smug Joe Camel as he wilts and fades into ashy repose. The carton is being devoured, the flame getting closer and closer to Amy’s thin fingers, but she simply stares at the conflagration as it advances. The blaze starts to lick at her fingertips.
“Amy!” I cry, and my voice shakes Amy out of her trance. She drops the pack to the ground and crushes it beneath her heel, snuffing out the flame and leaving a wet pile of cinders on the deck.
She sniffs, stands and throws her cigarette to the ground, stamping it out quickly. I look down at it to see that it’s barely been smoked at all.
“Damn it, my ass is wet.” She makes a weak attempt to slap water off of the back of her skirt with no result. She sighs.
“Doesn’t the talent show start soon?” I ask her, hoping that we can leave the issue of the flaming cigarette box behind.
“Yeah, might as well go inside.” She makes a move to the door and slips in a puddle of water, falling back against me. She steadies herself with a hand on my shoulder, and I notice that just the tip of her index finger is dark, almost scorched.
“You okay?” My question goes beyond an inquiry to her balance.
“Yeah, I’m fine. It’s just these damn heels.” She pushes away from me and I watch as she wobbles unsteadily to the door.
We walk inside and head down two levels to the theater area, where people are already gathering in anticipation of the performances to follow. The stage is a typical half-circle ensconced by a thick curtain that faces a large maze of comfortable chairs and glass tables and wrought-iron railing that separates seating into three separate areas, each one raised successively higher than the last like a layered cake. Near the back of the theater there are huge drapes of rich tapestry that hang suspended from the ceiling, swathes of crushed velvet that look like they belong in the collars of old English lords.
Amy and I take a seat in the rear, settling into the chairs and relaxing as the lights dim all around us. The announcer jumps onto the stage with a fervor that generally only manifests itself in manic children’s television shows.
“Our first act is a dance by our teen group. Please, make them feel welcome.”
As the applause from the crowd swells, I can see Amy staring at her pale blue lighter out of the corner of my eye. We had both neglected to join the efforts of the other teens for the talent show so that we could see how many would make fools of themselves.
The curtain peels back from the stage like an orange being unwrapped, and five teenage boys tromp out onto the stage. Resplendent in thick make-up, tight-fitting high heels and huge balloons poking up from underneath their shirts, they look like fifty-year-old drag queens.
Amid the titters that come from the crowd, the music starts; “Disco Inferno”, a classic hit by the Trammps. The boys on the stage are dancing clumsily along, moving their arms and legs frantically, testing the limits of their tight tank tops and leather miniskirts. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Amy reaching into her purse again.
“Burn baby burn” croons the recording over the robot-like movements of the teenagers. The novelty of cross-dressing has worn off on the crowd, who is waiting patiently for the next performance.
The small bottle that Amy had squirreled away earlier now comes out in a quick flash of red and white lettering as she unscrews the cap and splashes the vodka onto one of the thick drapes hanging behind us. Her lighter comes up.
A thin scratching sound, a hiss and a flaring roar as the expensive fabric is set ablaze. A gasp, a collective turning of heads as the crowd realizes that pyrotechnic effects have now been added into the program. I spring up, away from the burning tapestry as it trembles beneath the might of the alcohol-fueled inferno, I pull Amy away with me. The panicking crowd swarms around us in their stampede to get to safety.
Eyes as fixed upon the orange-and-red consumption of the theater as they were on the flaming carton of cigarettes, Amy leans back against me and sighs with contentment.
“Isn’t it beautiful?”
“No,” I whisper, flames dancing in my widening pupils. “No, we need to get out of here!”
I grip Amy’s thin wrist and charge out of the theater with her in tow. Already, a sprinkler system is coming on and I can hear an alarm wailing high above the frightened murmur of the crowd around us.
I keep moving, out of confusion and fear, back to the stern where Amy had ignited the cigarette box. We stood by the railing, the sea spray sloshing into our faces. I didn’t care about that at the moment, however.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” I ask, both baffled and angry at what has happened. “Why did you do that?”
The pyromaniacal sylph standing before me shrugs casually, as if I’d just asked her a math question that she didn’t know how to answer.
She smiles at me, a look that is almost reminiscent of the way she had gazed at flames. “Wasn’t it beautiful?”
“No, for God’s sakes! You tried to destroy a theater on a boat! You don’t see what’s wrong with that?”
“I–”
I don’t let her finish. My hand shoots out quickly and grabs her purse. Amy’s eyes widen as she struggles to keep it, but I wrestle it away from her, and its contents splash onto the soaked deck. A wallet, Kotex, keys, and the accursed pale blue lighter lay sprawled across the damp steel ground.
I lunge at the lighter at the same time that Amy does; my grasping fingers reach the small cylinder first and Amy attacks me, thudding her small fists into my chest.
“It’s MINE!” She growls at me with ferocity and a demon’s gleam in her eye, yet this only serves to make me hurl the lighter into the churning sea below us.
“NO!” She screams, and before I can react, she’s balancing herself on the railing high above the ocean like an Olympic diver ready to bring home the gold. I desperately make a grab towards her.
Her knees bend slightly, they push, and my fingertips only grasp air.
With wide eyes and shaking hands, I grip the edge of the railing, gaping at the airborne girl below me as she crashes into the sea.
For a moment I think I see a frantic limb thrashing above the sea.
It could be a trick that my brain is playing on me, but that doesn’t seem likely.
Because clutched in Amy’s drowning grip is the pale blue lighter.

Is there anybody out there that was more excited about this movie than I was? Maybe… but most probably not. I’ve been looking forward to another Batman movie since the credits rolled on "Batman Begins" back in 2005.

Batman is a movie that needs no synopsis, even for non-fans. But in case you are totally clueless, all you need to know is that Batman is a guy that dresses up in a bat costume and fights crime in Gotham city.

The Dark Knight continues where Batman Begins left off. Christian Bale reprises his role as Barman from the last movie, and this time he has two new villains: The Joker, played by Heath Ledger and Two-Face/Harvey Dent, played by Aaron Eckhart.

This is no doubt the most hyped movie of the year, especially with Heath's sudden death, and I must tell you it was up to the hype, or very very close to it. There's an Oscar campaign for Heath and I'll tell you right now that he was absolutely amazing and deserves an Oscar, or at least a nomination. If Warner Brothers didn't tell us Heath was playing The Joker, I swear not many people would have guessed it was him. I know I wouldn’t have.

So is this a good movie or just a good-Joker-used-to-promote-an-average movie? Good question. But an even better question is did you watch Batman Begins? Did you enjoy it? If you watch this movie, you'll never want to watch Batman Begins again because The Dark Knight will make it look like the worst movie you’ve ever seen. I promise you.

Everyone is talking about The Joker, but Harvey Dent/Two face is equally as good. His make-up, as Two Face will blow you away, and his acting is nothing less than amazing. Everyone else reprised their role from the last movie; all except Katie Holmes which if you ask me is a good move because I felt she didn't really belong in the first one. She is replaced by Maggie Gyllenhaal, which I love.

Director Christopher Nolan is a genius (Yes I know all the directors I reviewed are geniuses). He not only made an awesome superhero movie, but an awesome crime/detective movie. His brother Jonathan Nolan worked on the script, and since I saw Memento which the two worked on, I know that these two were born to work together.

So is there anything bad about this movie?

As another critic rightly put it,

"This movie was too long, but I'm only saying this so it seems like I'm doing my job...”

That being said, I don't think the length of this movie is a problem at all. I mean, The Godfather ran for almost three hours, I don't hear anyone complaining. Moreover, in most long movies, you'll see a scene or two that can be cut to shorten it, The Dark Knight had none. It was pure two and a half hours of awesomeness!

The closing speech of the movie ended with Commissioner Gordon saying "... he's the Dark Knight". Then there was a black screen. It was at that time that I noticed tears rolling down my cheeks because of how lucky I felt being alive to witness that kind of cinematic masterpiece.

Ladies and Gentlemen, this is the first movie I've given 5 out of 5 stars!
