I Depeche hanno firmato un contratto con al EMI Music per la distribuzione mondiale del loro ciddì in uscita per la primavera 2009.

Molto ermetici durante la conferenza stampa, si sanno solo due titoli della nuova opera (Peace e Wrong) e alcune dichiarazioni dei componenti dei DM che lo danno come un gran disco, in cui vengono riprese sonorità, synth e quant'altro dal mondo degli anni 80.

Per il momento possiamo solo aspettare. Tornati in studio a New York a terminare l'album, vediamo se arriveranno nuove informazioni in questi giorni.

Os britânicos Depeche Mode vão actuar no Porto, a 11 de Julho de 2009, no festival Super Bock Super Rock. O espectáculo faz parte da digressão mundial que o trio está a preparar para promover o novo álbum, a editar no próximo ano.

O grupo da “electro pop” – autor de êxitos como “Precious” e “Enjoy The Silence” – formou-se em 1980, em Essex, Inglaterra, e teve sucesso quase imediato. Dos vários êxitos da década de 1980, destaque para “Black Celebration” (1986), “Music For The Maces” (1987) e “Violator” (1990).

Em Portugal, os Depeche Mode têm uma legião de fãs desde os primeiros anos de existência. Foi, contudo, com o último álbum de originais “Playing the Angel” (2005) que o conjunto composto por Dave Gahan (vocalista), Martin L. Gore e Andrew Fletcher chegou ao grande público, atingindo o primeiro lugar da tabela de vendas portuguesa.

"What, your erotic writing?" I hear you ask. Good guess - for let's face it, the man's voice defines "erotic." Alas, I'm afraid my reply will be far less sexual than the image of me lying naked on my bed in a room lit with candles, listening to Dave singing "Everything Counts" as I tap breathlessly away on my laptop. You see, way back in the old days (roughly a year ago) when I first started getting into this full-time job known as Facebooking, one of my very first Facebook friends was - (drum roll) - Dave Gahan! (And yes, I mean Dave Gahan of Depeche Mode fame.) Some of you may already know about my prolific use of the social networking site Facebook. In fact, I've even been mentioned in the Guardian for my Facebooking proficiency. Therefore it seemed like a good idea to become "friends" with Dave Gahan on the off chance that he might actually be Dave Gahan.

Now I'm not so naive as to believe whatever proverbial hogwash someone tells me. Of course I had my reservations as to whether the individual to whom I was engaged in Facebook messaging was, in reality, the man in possession of the most erotic voice ever to ooze from a microphone. To be honest, I was quite coy and dismissive about the whole thing, volleying humourous little barbs into his court as to the nature of his true identity. As time went on, however, he said enough things to make me believe he might be genuine. Perhaps it was a vagueness not to speak all that much about himself (which would have been a dead giveaway that Dave Gahan wasn't really Dave Gahan - as in trying too hard). Perhaps it was the self-effacing quality he had when he offered me the occasional personal tidbit about his failed marriages and his former drug addiction. But I think it was that sense of insecurity he displayed when making reference to his new solo album that finally clinched it for me. Many artists are insecure about their work, especially those who possess the greatest talent. Ergo I was hooked.

Our Facebook exchanges continued along at a pleasant and steady pace. "Dave" demonstrated a wisdom about life from one who hasn't exactly had an easy time of it, and we got on quite well, though I still teased him now and again about his identity. He wasn't at all bothered with trying to convince me - which only served to convince me even more that my Facebook friend was Dave Gahan. Then one day I received an add request on Yahoo Messenger from a man I'd never heard of. Curious, I accepted, my intention being to delete him the moment I found out who he was and what he wanted. He immediately sent me an instant message, saying that he couldn't go on like this anymore and he had to come clean. It was my Facebook friend - and he was NOT Dave Gahan, but a 37-year-old divorced electrician from Kent. My Dave Gahan bubble had burst.

Could this mean that no one on Facebook is who he or she claims to be? Okay, so call me a skeptic, but I'm beginning to wonder if maybe my new Facebook friend Jimi Hendrix might, in fact, be dead after all. And as for all those pokes I keep getting from Jim Morrison...

1997 återvände elektroniska legenderna Depeche Mode efter Alan Wilders avhopp och Dave Gahans drogproblem och nästintilla självmord. Den nionde studio-skivan hette Ultra och hade en mer industriell och dyster stämning än deras tidigare skivor. Även om trumslagen är lite mer metalliska, samplingarna mer mystiska och melodierna inte riktigt skriker "dansa och var glad" som en del tidigare låtar Depeche Mode skapat- så finns det mesta med som gör bandet så bra. De typiska rytmerna, Martin Gore's typiska gitarr, den elektroniska kreativiteten och passar Dave Gahans mörka stämma som handen i handsken på de mörkare låtarna han främst sjunger själv i. Även Gores sång är klockren på den här skivan.

Det här är kanske inte den skivan som riktigt kännetecknar Depeche Mode, men det är på något sätt den jag har fastnat mest för. Sen kan det ju kanske bero på att jag köpte skivans singel Barrel of a gun när jag var kanske 10 år gammal och tyckte låten var lite småläskig och intressant så som skivan säkert forftarande kan uppfattas.

Quando seppi della trovata il mio commento istintivo fu "Che cagata!".
Però non mi andava di liquidare il fenomeno senza cognizione di causa, quindi oggi ho scaricato le mie dosi da eMule ed ho provato la mia omonima, la Marija.
Ripeto "Che cagata!". Pensavo che le dosi fossero mischiate (come un banale messaggio subliminale) a musica vera, invece no... solo rumori. E vi posso descrivere anche bene che tipo di rumori (no, non intestinali!): pale di elicottero in funzione e trattore in moto. Insomma un giramento di pale totale.

Ecco cosa la mia dose mi evocava: aperta campagna dove un elicottero per sbaglio stava per atterrare affianco, anzi sopra ad un trattore. Magari il trattore era quello di Johnatan Kent e l'elicottero minaccioso non riusciva ad atterrare perché Clark, nei panni di Superman, tentava di tenerlo in aria mentre le pale gli squarciavano il mantello e per poco non si faceva trivellare le budella...

Non so... questi vaneggiamenti di fantasia sono il frutto della Marija? A chi si accinge a rispondere si, preciso che mentre avevo quella roba nelle orecchie il mio pensiero si è fermato alla frase "un elicottero sta per atterrare affianco ad un trattore". Il resto l'ho aggiunto ora scrivendo, completando l'immagine per renderla un tantino più appetibile!

A me questa pare essere una cagata pazzesca e sopratutto basata sulla pura autosuggestione. E non è un caso che tra le istruzioni per avere gli effetti della dose al 100% ci sia ad es. l'evitare ogni distrazione (no rumori, no cani per casa...); prendere la dose al buio; restare ad occhi chiusi; concentrarsi sull'effetto voluto; rimanere immobili... L'unico effetto che sta roba mi ha suscitato è stato un tremendo fastidio e senso di nausea (dovuto al fastidio o alla fame?).

Perché mi sia venuta proprio oggi la fantasia di sperimentare iDoser? La verità è che questa "trovata" mi è tornata in mente stamattina mentre ascoltavo uno dei miei CD in assoluto preferiti: la colonna sonora di Blow. Ora lasciamo perdere il fatto che in quel film ci sia Johnny Depp, il CD (come il film) è tremendamente bello, procuratevelo ed ascoltatelo! (per chi non lo avesse visto, Blow racconta la storia di George Jung, il primo grande spacciatore di coca in america e la colonna sonora è piena zeppa di musica anni 70, dal rock dei Rolling Stones o dei Manfred Mann's Earth Band, alla pura disco music).

Ora, sarà per le immagini del film che comunque quelle canzoni rievocavano (preparazione della coca; gente fatta per tutta la durata del film, piantagioni di Marija...), fatto sta che ad ascoltarlo quel CD io mi sento più che invasata, probabilmente fatta e strafatta! Prima di Marija, poi di Coca. Vero è che io non ho mai assunto droghe in vita mia e ancora non ho ben definito quale sia la mia posizione al riguardo (se di dura condanna o bieca indifferenza) ma non per questo non ho l'idea di cosa possa essere "uno sballo" e quel CD mi sballa! :)

Così, mentre ascoltavo Blow ho pensato ad una cosa: le droghe hanno certamente la loro ottima funzione nel mondo e cioè quella di ispirare gran parte della musica prodotta (e di qualità), e mi sono ricordata di iDoser perché ho pensato che probabilmente il principio alla base di questo mio sentirmi particolarmente stimolata fosse simile a quello presente nelle "droghe sonore", e cioè si trattasse non del puro piacere nell'ascoltare un certo tipo di musica, ma nell'azione sul cervello di un certo tipo di onde sonore o radiofrequenze. Così l'ho voluta provare(una sorta di esperimento scientifico-empirico insomma). Il commento lo conoscete già "che cagata!".

Penso che non serva granché ascoltare trattori ed elicotteri per sperimentare qualche droga senza assumerla. Molto più semplice e utile, a questo punto, il fruire dell'arte a cui una qualche droga ha dato ispirazione. Se una canzone è scritta bene (prima di tutto nella musica, poi nel testo, che non guasta!) trasmette tanto e di più sullo stato d'animo (magari anche alterato) di chi l'ha composta. E non solo la trasmette, te la lascia anche percepire e vivere.

Alla fine perché ci piace un libro? Perché le cose scritte, descritte, raccontate e il modo in cui sono state messe su carta ci "ispirano", ci fanno provare qualcosa.
Perché ci piace un quadro? Perché ci trasmette una emozione.
Per la musica è lo stesso. Se il sig. Autore in quel momento era strafatto e si messo a comporre, è certo che il suo stato mentale (a patto che sia anche un bravo musicista) verrà fuori da ogni singola nota, da ogni beat... e chi la ascolta la percepirà. Il fatto che, poi, il risultato finale piaccia o non piaccia, dipende dalle emozioni che ci piace vivere o semplicemente ascoltare. (Per esempio io odio sentirmi sbronza -e chi conosce gli effetti della mia intolleranza al burro lo sa bene- ed è per questo probabilmente che odio Vasco: la sua musica puzza solo di alcool, a mio modesto modo di vedere le cose. Puzza di alcool, e se pure il sig. V. si fa di altro -anche di altro- trovo che trasmetta solo vaneggiamenti di uno sbronzo con l'alito pesante e la pancia gonfia di rutti e scorregge!)

Io ho sempre detto che mi drogo letteralmente di musica, probabilmente in questa espressione un tantino iperbolica ci sta un fondo di verità e spiegazione scientifica attraverso tutta la storia delle frequenze su cui lavora il cervello ed alle quali tende a sincronizzarsi... non so. Per es. c'è un cd che mi fa addormentare e sempre nello stesso punto, e non perché sia brutto (parlo di Paper Monster di Dave Gahan) ma perché, non lo so! Sarà che emette frequenze molto basse e di rilassamento... Buh? (voglio ben dire... la voce di Dave scalda più di un altoforno), però non è certo una novità che la musica abbia un considerevole potere su chi la ascolta: fa risvegliare dal coma; fa fare più uova alle galline, più latte alle mucche, secondo alcuni ha effetto dopante per chi pratica sport... Mi chiedo: serviva proprio iDoser?

Morale della favola: secondo me iDoser avrebbe più effetto se fosse somministrato come "messaggio subliminale", sotto forma di suoni mischiati ad altri suoni (=musica) insomma. Ma forse una cosa del genere sarebbe illegale e provocherebbe non poco allarme sociale... E in ogni caso la musica basta a se stessa. Non trovate?

Continuing the series about music fan, I met Mariola a couple of years ago, she's a big fan of Depeche Mode (DM). It's always very interesting to discover how a big music fan feel about a band and their music, to see how her life is influenced by the band. There always are amazing stories in each fan, nice anecdotes, funny moments to share. Mariola told me how she fell in love with DM, how their videos influenced the choice for a career and how their music opened her to other music genres.

How and when did it start between you and Depeche Mode?

It was when I was 15... ten years ago. I used to watch loads of MTV, when it was still a music channel.. and I watched a video called Barrel of a Gun.. and I loved it and then it came It's no good.. and I became a fan. It was hard because I lived in a small town and no one, at least not the guys my age I knew, liked Depeche Mode too much. Of course with the time, I started to meet people who loved Depeche Mode too, but at the beginning I felt a little bit lonely about my obsession.

Do you have a big collection of their records? Any rarities among that?

I have all Depeche Mode Cd's.. and most of the videos (mostly in VHS) but no rarities. Some of my friends have many rarities, really cool ones, but I have never been the collector kind. But I do have a Depeche Mode treasure, something that I really value, and it is the drumstick of the drummer who was with David Gahan on the Paper Monster's tour and the one touring with Depeche Mode in Playing the Angel. He threw the drumstick at a concert in Copenhagen. Of course everyone around me was fighting to take it because it fell on the floor, and I couldn´t reach it... but then the bodyguard took it, told all the guys to calm down and he gave it to me. It was an amazing feeling and it surpasses all the rarities.

How much do you follow their news (TV documentaries, books, website) ?

Until I was 18 I bought all the magazines, recorded all their TV shows and documentaries and had all the DM books. But now my interests are wider and I don't really have the time to follow their news too much. Of course I visit their website once in a while, but that`s it.

What is your best memories related with Depeche Mode?

Many of the good memories in my life are related with Depeche Mode. I met many of my friends because we love Depeche Mode.
One of my favorite recent memories are the concert in Monterrey MX, another is the David Gahan concert in Copenhagen, in which we sang together (DG and me) the chorus of the song I Need you.. uf.. I almost fainted. And another is about a Depeche Mode tribute me and a friend organized in Uruapan when we were 16. The place had never been that full, singing Depeche Mode and having a great time.

What is the craziest thing you've done for that band?

mmm. nothing really.. besides the normal things like going to concert and scream, or going alone to a cold city for a concert.. that´s all.. maybe if i lived in England or something, I would stand outside their record studios or their houses :P but I live faaar faar away.. (lucky them :P)

What do you think of Dave Gahan solo career?

Paper Monsters is brilliant, it was a very good chance to hear what Dave has to say and to hear his own compositions. I think it was a very healthy thing for the band and for him.. and now he is more confident and he could write some songs for the Playing the angel album. But I must say it´s pretty difficult to separate his work from DM music and even in the Paper Monsters concert, it was more like a Depeche Mode concert than a Dave Gahan solo concert. Anyway, I love this guy and whatever he does.

You now have started a career in the picture and movie industry, to which extend does the videos form DM (and others) have an influence on your work?

One of my main interests in my professional and personal life are music videos and photography, and actually I decided that I wanted to be a video director after I saw Anton Corbijn´s work with Depeche Mode. One of the Depeche Mode´s videos that has influenced the most is Never Let me Down again (see video below) and Barrel of a Gun. I love the black and white imagery, the use of the grain, the natural light, the eastern Europe style, the Berliner style, the makeup, and the contrasts.
Also, when I take photos as a hobby, I think that many of them reflect the style and the lyrics of Depeche Mode, at least that is what I want to reflect on them. Of course, Depeche Mode and Anton Corbijn are not my only influences, I am also very influenced by the works from Chris Cunningham, Floria Sigismondi, Mark Romanek and art and music in general. Other videos that are a main inspiration for me are "Perfect Drug" from Nine Inch Nails, "This is Hardcore" from Pulp and "Untitled no. 1" from Sigur Ros.

Dave Gahan recalls Alan Wilder
The future of Depeche Mode has been questioned by Dave Gahan during an interview with the Danish tabloid Ekstra Bladet. In the interview Gahan is quoted saying that his relation with composer Martin Gore is rather difficult due to Gore limiting Gahan's musical input: "My frustration has been growing over a long period of years. I have always felt that I've deceived myself - that I ought to have more influence. The reason why I haven't is both that I haven't been aggressive enough towards Martin, but also because I know that he simply isn't susceptible to advices and ideas of any kind." Gahan furthermore says that the band will get together later on this year to talk things through: "We will probably have a talk sometime next year, but there are no guarantees that we will make another record." In the chat Gahan also insists that Gore's lack of openness was the main reason that the creative sound arcitect of the group, Alan Wilder, left the band. Gahan: "Martin wouldn't acknowledge that Alan contributed incredibly much to Martin's songs. And now I think you can easily say Alan's input is missed. I actually think that even Martin would admit that today. And that is something he probably ought to call and tell Alan after all these years. He would definately appreciate it." The interview turns rather hilarious when Gahan talks about how producer Mark Bell was faced with the "Exciter" material and Gore's apathy towards production: "Our producer on 'Exciter', Mark Bell, said that he really wouldn't make the entire album for us. So then i had to tell him some news: "Yes you f'u'c'king are!". And then he just pulled up his sleeves and went to work with the computer and Martin would look him over the shoulder and mumble "o.k." side-line

Dave Gahan se encuentra molesto por los rumores acerca de sobre su sobredosis de heroìna y cocaìna, que fueron especulaciòn sobre un intento de suicidio en 1996.

Gahan fue declarado clìnicamente muerto por la sobredosis de cierta combinaciòn de drogas denomidada Speed, en la habitaciòn de un hotel de Los Angeles.

Fue revivido por paramèdicos y sobreviviò y ha pasado los ùltimos 11 años tratando de convencer a escèpticos que no tenia intenciones de quitarse la vida.

Ahora a los 45 años, Gahan comenta a la revista Hustler:

"Estoy dolorosamente consciente de que no era lo que yo estaba tratando de hacer. Todo lo que trataba de hacer era desaparecer por un tiempo, y que se convirtió en un fin de semana perdido".

A pesar de esquivar la muerte, Gahan, está convencido de su voluntad de vivir lo ayudó a sobrevivir a la sobredosis.

El ahora estrella, "limpio de drogas" Gahan comenta: "Sobrevivì porque querìa, goce de las drogas un tiempo y fue divertido, y luego no serlo. Es justo como funciona.  No hay nada nuevo, lo que yo pensè que querìa hacer en mi vida era escapar constantemente de todo lo que estaba pasando. Ese no serà màs el caso, estoy aquì y me gusta el desafìo de la vida"

Found this song as another freebie on the web from Dynamophone Records quite a while ago. The spoken word on the track is a poem by E.E. Cummings. This is from a 22-track album called Nowhere. Each song on the album is a different poem by Cummings, mixed into an electronic soundscape. From a very young age my writing has been influenced by Cummings. From her first solo album I Megaphone. Someone this young should not be able to write songs like these. Mind blowing. Imogen lives the most creative, interesting life. This is what I want for my chiId - to believe in herself and live life as a creative expression. The piano on this one really reminds me of Tori Amos.

Speaking of Tori Amos... see how I did that? If I had to pick a Tori Amos song that best fits my life, this would be the one. We are getting reacquainted, Tori and I. When Mari was born, she had terrible colic and I remember one of the few things that made her stop screaming was the album Boys for Pele … and anything by Depeche Mode. In Mari’s first year I kind of went into a crazy place called overwhelmed and stopped listening to music for a few years. It was like I could not take in any more input from any source. So I lost touch with Tori. I’ve missed her. Working on Neil’s album I’ve been listening to my favorite vocalists, trying to figure out what kind of voice I have. I hope I have at least a teeny, tiny bit of Tori in me.

1 & 2, Ghosts I-IV
Nine Inch Nails
We’ve been listening to this quite a bit lately as Neil put his video together. It seems fitting to follow Tori with Trent, as she puts Nine Inch Nails references* into her songs and Trent sang on the song “Past the Mission.” I’ll have to go on about Trent’s amazing voice in another blog, because these tracks are instrumental. But there was no skimping on mood for Ghosts. I think every emotion I’ve ever experienced can be found somewhere in those 32 songs.

This is from the album This Binary Universe. The song starts off with a thunderstorm. I adore thunderstorms. There is nothing better than sitting with the windows wide open and listening to rain. This album is great when I want to do some writing or journaling. It somehow seeps into that meditative part of my brain. This song in particular is very filmic to me. It gives me that opening credits kind of anticipation I used to get when I went to the movies.

Not the album version. The long version, thank you very much. This is an underrated track from an underrated album, Exciter. Our boys can kick it with an instrumental. I’ve done a mix of just DM instrumentals that’s pretty darn sweet.

Ok, putting this entry together took about four times as long as I thought it would. See what I do for you, my bloglings? But to me the music is worth it.

I was barely over a month into my 21st birthday back in March, 1990. Considering I never had the notion to drink, I had never thought about going into a bar. My mind would change quickly.

My brother was working at a local radio station that was giving away tickets to a private party with Depeche Mode (it was not KROQ). The event, which took place the night before the Wherehouse disaster, was going to be at a "secret location" somewhere in Los Angeles. Anyway, my brother called me and asked a dumb question: would you like to go?

He had given away so many tickets to listeners who were, more than anything, simply eager to win a prize from a radio station. The last pair, he proclaimed, "needs to go to a pair of real fans." The only downer was that relatives of station employees could not win tickets to this small event.

But that's what friends are for.

My brother asked me if I could supply information for my buddy Russ, another DM fan. The two of us had been DM fans for a long time and already had a string of DM concert ticket stubs in our collection, including the best one of all: the Concert for the Masses at the Rose Bowl. I called Russ, explaining the situation, got the info, and called my brother back. Within minutes, Russ was the final winner of the contest. We had to swear not to tell anybody where this event was taking place. In case you are interested, it was at a nameless bar on Melrose across the street from the Astroburger in Los Angeles, near Paramount Studios. If you know the area, you know where I'm talking about.

Alright, the day had come. Russ and I parked across the street and checked in at the door. We were handed a cassette copy of Violator, which was also playing in the background. After about 10 minutes, the band arrived.

They quietly wandered to a table and sat down, were served bottles of Rolling Rock beer (the first time I had ever heard of it), and chatted amongst themselves. After a few drinks, they began to walk amongst the fans.

They shook hands, posed for pictures, signed autographs. I had the band sign three things: a vinyl copy of Music for the Masses, the cover to The Singles 81-> 85 CD and a small photo from the Japanese CD3 for Behind The Wheel/I Want You Now, to which Martin replied, "What in the world did you get this?" I smiled and explained. Wow, to have something the band had never even seen. Russ had a swirled vinyl 12" of A Question of Lust and a tour program from 101. Also note the Question of Lust button on Russ' DM cap. It was included in the Question of Lust UK cassette remix along with a booklet. Hard to find.

The entire event lasted only about 45 minutes. When I went to grab my last CD to have signed, they were headed for the door.

Afterwards, Russ and I went down to the Beverly Center Wherehouse and showed Violator to a few hearty souls who were waiting in line for the big event the next day. Needless to say, they were a bit jealous.

Between the two of us, we managed to take the pictures you see below. The quality is not the best; I blame the lousy camera I had that night. I should have brought my trusty Minolta X370 instead.
