This tardy episode is the result of a series of unfortunate events. First, our guest didn't show due to rampant alcoholism, then after continuing bravely forward and recording anyway, Grae's computer erased their efforts. Enter BJ Serviss, one of our Best Friends of the Show, who came in on short notice to offer his opinion on both Hancock and The Wackness.

In this episode, Gariana repeatedly asserts that Grae is the Wackness and she is the Dopeness, BJ shares that he secretly delights in watching Jared Leto get beat up in Fight Club, and Grae won't stop singing Biz Markie. Between arguing about whether the phrase "Jeal Jeal" will catch on, they discuss The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and The Day the Earth Stood Still. BJ wraps up by expressing firm views on Beverly Hills Chihuahua and Gariana counters by threatening to defacate on Grae's floor. Just another week.

IMDB

(2007, David Fincher)

To say that this movie owes a lot to 1976's All the President's Men is an understatement. From the visual aspects to the newsroom banter to the creepy scenes of intrigue, David Fincher owes Sidney Lumet a letter of gratitude. Don't you miss the days of newspapers actually being relevant?

The focus of the story is on the quest for the elusive Zodiac killer instead of the actual killings, and it's an endeavor that plays out like a riddle, drawing its participants in and taking over their lives. The film goes on too long - perhaps because the case is so intricate and remains unsolved - but it captures the haunting feeling that the Zodiac case has for those obsessed with it. Unfortunately, the film unravels near the end, since by nature, it's leading down a series of blind alleys. The trifecta of lead actors, Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey, Jr are solid (if a tad too quirky), and director Fincher is admirably restrained.

I also need to download Donovan's "Hurdy-Gurdy Man" after watching this film. Haven't heard it since the Butthole Surfers' cover in the early 90s.

Paramount studios just ditched David Fincher's "Heavy Metal" film adapted from the popular adult fantasy comic, a magazine where you can buy at newstands everywhere. Fincher was set to produce the film and to direct one of the stories. Paramount turned down the offer to get the film made because they felt the content was too risque for mainstream audiences, probably due to it's controversial violence and sexual content.

More on it here:

http://hollywoodinsider.ew.com/2008/07/david-fincher.html

That article called Fincher's film a "remake", it is not. The new "Heavy Metal" film will feature new stories so it will be different than the 1981 film. If you read earlier articles about Fincher's "Heavy Metal", they all said it wasn't a remake.

It's no surprise to me that Paramount wouldn't do this. I don't think any major movie studios would do this, Warner Bros. would probably turn it down too.

I would say either Lionsgate or Nu Image/Millenium would be the most likely studios that would be willing to do this film.

The majority of this film, I would say, is nothing more than a meticulously handled above average crime thriller. However, once Jake Gyllenhaal's character becomes the centrepiece, things quickly escalate. I have to admit, Jake is one of my favourite working actors, and he nails his role in Zodiac perfectly. Fincher's style is used in moderation, which is nice, and he does well in recreating the time period. The film can feel slow at times, and seems overly long, but it more than makes up for it with an excellent third act. Easily my favourite Fincher yet, and one of the best crime thrillers I can remember since The Silence of the Lambs.

Paramount's new production execs felt the movie was too risque for mainstream audiences.

The project is an amaglam of erotic and violent storylines penned by well-known sci-fi scribes like Steve Niles (30 Days of Night), Joe Haldeman (The Forever War), and Neal Asher (Gridlinked). The concept is to use eight to 10 of these shorts in a single movie with each segment helmed by a different director.

Notable elenco Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Taraji P. Henson, Jason Flemyng, Elias Koteas, Julia Ormond

I picked up this comic book for Dan because it was published by Dark Horse (publisher of Hellboy and

I picked up this comic book for Dan because it was published by Dark Horse (publisher of Hellboy and BPRD to name a few ). I also remembered reading a little blurb about it in Wizard a few years ago. The cover caught my eye, and it seemed amusing in a bizarre way, which is right up Dan's alley.

Did he love it? Of course he freaking did! We have a good enough relationship (what with the knowing each other for 5 years) that we can pick up a movie, book, comic, action figure, food item, CD, video game, etc - and know perfectly well how the other will enjoy it.

Needless to say, Dan loves The Goon, written and drawn by Eric Powell. Me - not so much in love. It's a bit too silly and random for me. I like meaty, contenty comics but it's not needed all the time. Comics can also be entertaining.

Dan digs the writing style and will laugh out loud about it. I paged through one book and chuckled a bit. What really attracts me is the Art, which is what initially captured my attention. It works well with the humor, and I love the characters. It's fairly cartoon-y, but Powell brings a nice zest to it, and I would definitely read his books if I didn't have a huge stack of other things to delve through and report about.

I've been trying like hell to get Dan to "guest star" in this blog, because his tastes differ from mine in the comic world. He tends to like what I like, but he also has his own personal favorites that I don't particularly care to read. And vice versa. Anywho - he insists he cannot write (bullshit) but I figured I could do something in his stead, and plug the book that he's reading.

Also worth noting - The Goon is being made into a computer animated film. Apparently the film will be directed by David Fincher. I'm not sure how live-action directors translate to computer-animated directors...and since that really isn't my field, I won't do too much speculating in this area. I like a few of David Fincher's movies, so he's got approval from me.

Which I think is a perfect medium for this comic. The humor is irreverent, random and a bit silly. It would be incredibly challenging to capture in live-action. I will for sure see this when it comes out, and not just because Dan will inevitably drag me to it.

I think the main element lacking for me in The Goon is a really cohesive storyline. It's basically a series of funny one-shot stories strung together (at least in the two TPBs I read). If I could see a plot forming from all of them, it would be different. I would love to see this material made into a movie, because a plot would have to be hammered out in order for the film to work on any level. I know one exists within the structure of the series, but it would be lovely to condense the weird down into a fun 90 minute chunk.

My point, I guess - is that The Goon entertains, but never quite enlightens.

And I suppose the English major in me demands structure and some mentally engaging elements in the story in order for me to keep reading through. The Goon doesn't satisfy on all those levels...but is worth checking out for a fun, zany trip into Powell's weird world.

Much Love, Mindy C

CAPTION: Ghengis Khan is all up in this yurt.

So last week I saw that flick Mongol, you know, the new epic about Ghengis Khan made by a Russian director (Sergei Bodrov), starring a Japanese dude (Tadonubo Asano), nominated for an Oscar, and inexplicably released stateside in the middle of the summer movie season. It was a pretty good movie that held my interest for two hours by exposing me to a culture I know little about and featuring a well played out historical epic story arc complete with requisite kick-ass battle scenes. Sitting there getting frosty in the air-conditioned theater while the heat and humidity raged outside, I couldn't help thinking this was a movie better suited for the prestigious autumnal season. With the most gluttonous of film seasons in full swing (is The Dark Knight out yet?), I decided to take a look ahead at my favorite season in film and weather.

Here I present my list of most anticipated movies for Fall 2008:

___________________________________________________________________

1. The Miracle at St. Anna (scheduled release date: 9/26)

The Director: Spike Lee

The Stars: Derek Luke, John Leguizamo, James Gandolfini, Joseph Gordon Levitt, some cute Italian kid, Alexandra Maria Lara, and a boatload of other people and familiar faces

The Scoop: Okay, so I will admit it right here, right now. I love Spike Lee. I even liked She Hate Me. He's a cunning provocateur who's had numerous peaks and valleys in his career but just won't stop no matter what and always seems to get his name in the papers--witness Clint Eastwood telling him recently to "shut his face". Spike is coming off the most commercially successful film of his long career with Inside Man. With this adaptation of the novel by James McBride about a group of African-American soldiers trapped in Tuscany during WWII, he's giving us his first epic since Malcom X. The trailer for this film is a smashing success that manages to sell the film as both a murder mystery and a searing Saving Private Ryan style WWII drama. This latest Spike Lee Joint has so many great things going for it: an auteur on the precipice of a personal artistic and commercial Renaissance (much like the one Scorsese recently went through with The Aviator and The Departed); a great storyline that has the potential to provoke discussions of history, race, religion and politics in a historic Presidential election year; and a multi-ethnic cast that includes a cute Italian kid, and as a special bonus for me, the devastatingly seductive Alexandra Maria Lara, whose beauty alone made Francis Ford Coppola's recent debacle Youth Without Youth worth watching.

Watch the trailer: http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi3941007641/

Official Site: http://www.miraclemovie.com

________________________________________________________________

2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (scheduled release date: 12/19)

The Director: David Fincher

The Stars: Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Tilda Swinton, Julia Ormond

The Scoop: This is the fantastic case of a gimmick film (it tells the not so simple story of a man who ages backwards, folks) with a literary pedigree (adapted from a story by F. Scott Fitzgerald). I first saw the trailer for this in front of the latest Indiana Jones flick, and the packed house was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Its epic scope appears to be a complete departure for director Fincher, and its unique story and images sweep over you in the masterfully crafted trailer-much kudos thus far to the marketing team. This film has the potential to be monumentally huge or just another curiosity grabbing for Oscar gold at Christmastime. Will Fincher (robbed of an Oscar nod for Zodiac last year) and uber-star Pitt (robbed last year for The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) finally get their due?

3. Australia (scheduled release date: 11/14)

The Director: Baz Luhrmann

The Stars: Nicole Kidman, Hugh Jackman, Australia!

The Scoop: Baz the Spazz changes gears completely with this big historical epic depicting heroism and romance against the backdrop of a Japanese attack on Australia during WWII. The trailer sells the imagery and scope of the film very well, making it look Gone with the Wind Down Under, though the frame story of Kidman telling a fairy tale to the Aborigine girl seems a bit strained (and remarkably similar to Tarsem's The Fall.) Luhrmann appears to have abandoned his hyper kinetic style for the dreadful sumptuousness that always seems to sell tickets during the big holidays at the end of the year. Kidman and Jackman certainly look the parts, and lord knows they could both use a big hit. Will critics be eager to embrace the new Luhrmann after a seven year hiatus? More than any other film, I think critics have the chance to make or break this one.

4. The Soloist (scheduled release date: 11/21)

The Director: Joe Wright

The Stars: Robert Downey Jr., Catherine Keener, Jamie Foxx

The Scoop: Brit Joe Wright atones for his period pieces by making this American set musical biopic. Downey Jr. is back on the A-list, the director is taking on a genre held in high favor in recent years, and playing a schizophrenic musical genius seems right up Foxx's alley. There are no trailers or official sites yet, but I can't wait to see what kind of tracking long shots Wright cooks up for this one--I'm picturing a shot the begins with an overhead dolly and travels down and through the crowd and orchestra at a grand concert hall.

________________________________________________________________

5. Revolutionary Road (scheduled release date: 12/26)

The Director: Sam Mendes

The Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Kate Winslet

The Scoop: I have to admit, the plot of this one (from a novel by Richard Yates) sounds like a snore-fest: a young couple in 1950's Connecticut deal with problems and such. However, Mendes has yet to make a bad film, suburban dystopia is his bread and butter (American Beauty, anyone?), and the reunion of Titanic stars Leo and Kate in a Christmastime release give this film some palpable buzz. No trailers or official site have appeared yet.

______________________________________________________________________

Other Films of Interest:

Changeling: 10/31. The latest from Clint Eastwood has some mixed buzz coming from its Cannes' premier. This 1920's set psychological thriller about a mother who begins to doubt the identity of her young son who has been returned to her after going missing will have a hard line to tow while it tries to convince people it's not a remake of a horror film with the same name and is instead a prestigious Oscar bid for its uber-star Angelina Jolie.

Defiance: 12/2. Yet another WWII epic, this one is based on a true story and staring Daniel Craig. Directed by Edward Zwick, the film of course reeks of quality, and the trailer has been getting some good buzz (at least amongst my friends and family), but it looks nobly cliched to me. If that new Spike Lee Joint strikes a cord, this runs the risk of being overshadowed as the later release.

Watch the trailer for Defiance: http://www.imdb.com/video/imdb/vi2008154393/

Oh, yeah, there's also a new James Bond flick (Craig again) idiotically entitled Quantum of Solace (11/7), and a wacky crime caper from Oscar darlings the Coen Brothers zanily called Burn After Reading (9/12) and staring, you guessed it, Brad Pitt.

This film is about time. Specifically, what if time went backwards, or rather, what if one person go

This film is about time. Specifically, what if time went backwards, or rather, what if one person got continuously younger while the rest of the world aged?

One of the first things I learnt working in the film industry was that it takes a long, long time to make a movie, a fact entirely borne out by The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which has been in the works since 1994.

Since I was thirteen years old.

Since then I have done my GCSE's, learnt to drive, taken A-levels, perfected the art of blow-drying my hair, completed a three year degree, a post-grad diploma and ended a war of attrition between myself and arachnids (ok I'm still working on that last one).

Meanwhile Benjamin Button - adapted loosely from a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald - has been washed and spun and wrung to an inch of its life by the ponderous Hollywood machine.

Numerous writers have had a shot at the script, including Charlie Kaufman (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind), Jim Taylor (Sideways and About Schmidt) and finally Eric Roth (Ali, Munich, The Good Shepherd).

Directors Spike Jonze and Gary Ross were attached at different times, but the job finally went to David Fincher, whose CV - including Fight Club, Se7en and The Game - guaranteed a safe pair of hands for a tricksy narrative.

Fincher will have had his work lightened by a stellar cast - Brad Pitt as Button, Cate Blanchett as the woman Button loves, plus Tilda Swinton and our Julia in supporting roles - but on the other hand he'll have been burdened with hours of make-up work and visual effects to depict an unprecedented cinematic transformation: "I was born under unusual circumstances," confides our narrator, "while everyone else was ageing, I was getting younger - all alone."

Thus Pitt goes from elderly man-baby (?! yep), to a Robert Redfordian wrinkly 55-year-old, to a young dad (cradling real-life daughter Shiloh Jolie-Pitt), to a teenager, to a baby proper.

The narrative incorporates a kind of magic realism that may test the patience of mainstream audiences, but with the right touch, I'm hoping it could prove transcendent.

Top! do Leitor:

Caio Lucas

01. Thelma & Louise (Ridley Scott, 1991)
03. Se7en – Os Sete Crimes Capitais (David Fincher, 1995)
04. Cães de Aluguel (Quentin Tarantino, 1992)
05. Dança com Lobos (Kevin Costner, 1990)
06. Clube da Luta (David Fincher, 1999)
07. Boogie Nights (P.T. Anderson, 1997)
08. Pulp Fiction - Tempo de Violência (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)
09. Forrest Gump – O Contador de Histórias (Robert Zemeckis, 1994)
10. O Grande Lebowski (Irmãos Coen, 1998)

Tops! da Equipe:

Marcelo Dillenburg

01. O Rei Leão (Roger Allers & Rob Minkoff, 1994)
02. Seven – Os Sete Crimes Capitais (David Fincher, 1995)
03. A Princesa Mononoke (Hayao Miyazaki, 1997)
04. Los Angeles – Cidade Proibida (Curtis Hanson, 1997)
05. Além da Linha Vermelha (Terrence Malick, 1999)
06. O Profissional (Luc Besson, 1994)
07. Matrix (Wachowskis, 1999)
08. Pulp Fiction - Tempo de Violência (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)
09. O Silêncio dos Inocentes (Jonathan Demme, 1991)
10. Forrest Gump – O Contador de Histórias (Robert Zemeckis, 1994)

Daniel Dalpizzolo

01. New Rose Hotel (Abel Ferrara, 1998)
02. The Blackout (Abel Ferrara, 1997)
03. Crash (David Cronenberg, 1995)
04. O Pagamento Final (Brian De Palma, 1993)
05. O Rei de Nova York (Abel Ferrara, 1990)
06. De Olhos Bem Fechados (Stanley Kubrick, 1999)
07. Os Bons Companheiros (Martin Scorsese, 1990)
08. Barton Fink (Joel & Ethan Coen, 1991)
09. Felicidade (Todd Solondz, 1998)
10. O Vingador do Futuro (Paul Verhoeven, 1990)

Adney Silva

01. Tropas Estelares (Paul Verhoeven, 1997)
02. De Olhos Bem Fechados (Stanley Kubrick, 1999)
03. Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)
04. Cidade das Sombras (Alex Proyas, 1998)
05. Além da Linha Vermelha (Terence Mallick, 1998)
06. Barton Fink (John & Ethan Coen, 1991)
07. O Rei Leão (Roger Allers e Rob Minkoff, 1994)
08. Magnólia (Paul Thomas Anderson, 1999)
09. eXistenZ (David Cronenberg, 1999)
10. True Lies (James Cameron, 1994)

01. Short Cuts - Cenas da Vida (Robert Altman, 1993)
02. Contos das Quatro Estações (Eric Rohmer, 1990, 1992, 1996, 1998)
03. A Salvo (Todd Haynes, 1995)
04. Além da Linha Vermelha (Terrence Malick, 1998)
05. Segredos e Mentiras (Mike Leigh, 1996)
06. Bom Trabalho (Claire Denis, 1999)
07. Fim de Caso (Neil Jordan, 1999)
08. A Fraternidade é Vermelha (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1994)
09. Tudo Sobre Minha Mãe (Pedro Almodóvar, 1999)
10. Underground - Mentiras de Guerra (Emir Kusturica, 1995)

Cassius Abreu

01. O Rei Leão (Roger Allers & Rob Minkoff, 1994)
02. Cães de Aluguel (Quentin Tarantino, 1992)
03. Short Cuts - Cenas da Vida (Robert Altman, 1993)
04. O Sexto Sentido (M. Night Shyamalan, 1999)
05. As Virgens Suicidas (Sofia Coppola, 1999)
06. A Trilogia das Cores (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1993 a 1994)
07. O Jogador (Robert Altman, 1992)
08. Central do Brasil (Walter Salles, 1998)
09. Além da Linha Vermelha (Terrence Malick, 1999)
10. A Lista de Schindler (Steven Spielberg, 1993)

Jailton Rocha

01. Se7en – Os Sete Crimes Capitais (David Fincher, 1995)
02. Pulp Fiction - Tempo de Violência (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)
03. O Talentoso Ripley (Anthony Minghella, 1999)
04. Vamos Nessa (Doug Liman , 1999)
05. 007 Contra Goldeneye (Martin Campbell, 1995)
06. A Lenda do Cavaleiro Sem Cabeça (Tim Burton, 1999)
07. Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg, 1992)
08. O Exterminador do Futuro 2 - o Julgamento Final (James Cameron, 1991)
09. O Rei Leão (Roger Allers e Rob Minkoff, 1994)
10. Dança com Lobos (Kevin Costner, 1990)

Pedro Kerr

01. Barton Fink (Irmãos Coen, 1991)
02. Pulp Fiction (Quentin Tarantino, 1994)
03. Os Bons Companheiros (Martin Scorsese, 1990)
04. O Grande Lebowski (Irmãos Coen, 1998)
05. Jovens, Loucos e Rebeldes (Richard Linklater, 1993)
06. Violência Gratuita (Michael Haneke, 1997)
07. O Pagamento Final (Brian De Palma, 1993)
08. Instinto Selvagem (Paul Verhoeven, 1992)
09. Mistérios e Paixões (David Cronenberg, 1991)

01. Short Cuts (Robert Altman, 1993)
02. De Olhos Bem Fechados (Stanley Kubrick, 1999)
03. Fargo (Joel Coen & Ethan Coen, 1996)
04. Felizes Juntos (Wong Kar-Wai, 1997)
05. A Liberdade é Azul (Krzysztof Kieslowski, 1993)
06. Barton Fink (Joel Coen & Ethan Coen, 1991)
07. Felicidade (Todd Solondz, 1998)
08. As Pontes de Madison (Clint Eastwood, 1995)
09. Desconstruindo Harry (Woody Allen, 1997)
10. O Doce Amanhã (Atom Egoyan, 1997)

We love movies. The dark theater (minus the jackass texting 3 rows in front of you). The box of Milk Duds. The drink that's way too big, but you're going to finish the damn thing anyways, because you paid $5.00 for it. The previews... ahh, the previews. Allowing yourself to leave the world behind and be swept away for 2 hours by the vision of a truly great filmmaker. Trying to figure out the ending long before you should even be worried about that. Analyzing the plots and subplots. Reaching sometimes further than we should to try to find the applicability to our own lives.

For us, film is truly one of the greatest art forms. As you should all know by now, art is kind of a big deal to us. And, there's nothing better than the first time you see a great film, except for maybe the second or third time. Losing yourself in the art of film is an experience like none other. These experiences often leave such an impression that we're left remembering the exact days or specific events that are connected to the watching of them. Kyle first saw the movie Fight Club on 7/25/99. He remembers clearly the ecstasy he met as the last scene unfolded, and the musical genius of the Pixies merged with the cinematic genius of David Fincher. Ben can relive the fear he felt the night he saw The Exorcist. The darkness of the night. The pouring Texas rain. How not 10 minutes after the film ended, the power was cut in his apartment, and he was left to sit on the floor in the dark for the next 3 hours. It was one of the only times in his life where he genuinely felt the effects of a scary movie. Of course, the thunderstorm and the lack of electricity helped out quite a bit.

Have we made our point? We really love movies.

As fantastic and wonderful as these great movies, nay films, can be, there is a darker side. As it says in the Bible (or maybe it's Star Wars), you can't have good without evil. You can't have light without darkness. You can't have great without terrible. We desperately wish this wasn't the case with cinema.

Bad movies are ruining America. They're lowering people's expectations, tastes and IQ's. They're bastardizing a wonderful art form. They're making us question the future of the human race. (Yes, we know we can be a little dramatic, but we wait until we're tired and angry to write these posts. Somehow, it just feels right.)

And now, for your enjoyment, awareness, and education we'll list our most hated movies. We'll tell you why we hate them. We might even spoil the endings so that you're not even tempted to see them. Just don't ask us to tell you which one is worse than the others. They all suck.

Ben's Most Hated Movies:

Titanic

At one point the highest grossing movie ever. Is it still? Don't know. Don't care. All I know is that whenever I would hear that ungodly Celine Dion song I wanted to down a bottle of cyanide. This, to my recollection, was the first moment in my life that I refused to take part in something that the main-stream was thoroughly enjoying. I refused to go see the film. I'm sorry to say now that I eventually caved and ended up watching the movie on a date. Stupid girls. I've always regretted it. How much I would enjoy being able to say today that "I've never seen Titanic." I won't make that mistake again. (See Harry Potter) Titanic = bad dialogue, pointless nudity, some of the worst one-liners of our generation (you're not the effing king of the world), Leonardo DiCaprio's worst acting gig ever (and yet, the one that catapulted him to a certain level of super stardom), a great example of a film that's only "great" because enough money was thrown at it, and ammunition for all guys, everywhere, against women... She let go!

Not to mention... you did know, going into this movie, that everyone was going to die, right? It's the freaking Titanic.

Cross Dressing Comedies
Big Momma's House (1&2), Nutty Professor (1&2), White Chicks, The Hot Chick, Mrs. Doubtfire, Norbit, Madea's Family Reunion

Have I forgotten any? I'm sure I have. It's pretty satisfying to be able to kill 9 horrible movies with one stone, though. Since when did a man in a dress become instant comedy? The worst of it, in my eyes, is the volume of black comedians subjected to these rolls. If I were Al Sharpton, I would spend a little less time worrying about the "racism" of people like Don Imus and a little more time worrying about the degradation that occurs in the black community when thousands of people gather around a screen and laugh at black men in dresses.

I don't even know where to start here. Isn't it universally accepted that this is the bottom of the barrel? These aren't movies. They certainly aren't comedy. These are bad Laffy Taffy jokes, at best. Putting on a dress, and frequently a fat suit, doesn't equal funny. Funny equals funny. Can you have comedy with cross dressing? Sure. There are truly comedic moments in the history of film and television that involve cross dressing - namely, Monty Python and Arrested Development. But these moments are funny because of the great writing, great acting, great comedy, not because some dude is wearing a dress. Putting a guy in a dress, filming him, and then expecting laughter is not only insulting to my intelligence, it's ruining America.

And, if you're laughing at them, then so are you.

"Scary" Movies
Blair Witch Project, The Ring 2, The Grudge (1&2), Boogeyman, Dark Water, Saw 1-25, Hostel, Captivity, and on and on and on...

I do kind of feel like I'm cheating by including two genres on my list, but it is really hard to narrow this down. You'll also notice that I didn't include the first Ring. That's because I actually enjoyed that one. But, then again, that was before the cinematic saturation of young Asian girl "horror".

To be fair, the Saw franchise could probably carry this thing alone, but the tragedy is how eager we are to shell out our money to sit through these so called "scary movies". I think The Grudge is literally the same 10 minute scene shot at different angles and replayed 10 times. I can remember sitting in the theater during Blair Witch... laughing. It really was an amusing film to me. Some would probably credit it with opening new doors for film makers, or something idiotic like that, but the only thing that I give this movie credit for was conning millions of dollars out of our pockets. I do believe the first Saw had some of the worst acting I've ever seen in my life delivered by none other than the Dread Pirate Roberts (Cary Elwes) "You BASTARD!" Again... quite laughable. Captivity was actually nominated for 3 Razzies: Worst Actress, Worst Director, and Worst Excuse for a Horror Movie. It was then nominated for a Teen Choice Award for Choice Movie Actress: Horror/Thriller. See what these films are doing to the rising generation?

I see the same principle here as the comedies. Show us something stupid, expect us to laugh. Show us something gruesome, expect us to be scared. No plot necessary, don't worry about good dialogue, just be sure to kill a lot of people and make it as bloody as possible. If there's a young girl with a lot of dark hair covering her face... all the better.

Kyle's Most Hated Movies:

Pearl Harbor

I've only walked out of the theater during one movie in my entire life. Those of you who know me know I'm not a prude, so it wasn't due to excessive violence, language, coolness, cigarette smoking, etc. I didn't walk out because it was merely boring, as I enjoy a good nap as much as the next guy. I walked out because this movie was so lame, so offensively sappy, so inappropriately far away from what it should have been that I just couldn't stand it any longer. I'll give you a hint, there's an entire song in the Trey Parker/Matt Stone film Team America devoted to this movie's awfulness.

That's right, it's Pearl Harbor. Ugh.

My hatred for Michael Bay began with this absolute abortion of a film. First of all, Ben Affleck sucks. He's not good to watch in any role, let alone a romantic hero role. That was my first hint, before I'd even seen the movie, that it was going to be terrible.

Second of all, in a three-hour movie, how can only half an hour be devoted to the actual events of Pearl Harbor? Is the story of that fateful day so boring and lame that it just begs for a drawn out, painfully dull love story? And to make it a love triangle? Gag me with a freaking spoon. The real story of Pearl Harbor and its lasting impact is so interesting and powerful that it's a shame we saw so little of it. It's as if someone wrote a terribly boring love story/period piece, and then realized that people would pay to see it if the story was set around the Japanese attack on the Oahu harbor. The actual Pearl Harbor elements feel tacked on and superfluous, and they should be anything but.

Finally, I just really, really hate Ben Affleck. I feel justified in making that my first and last argument. He sometimes redeems himself in his buddy Kevin Smith's flicks, but he doesn't do it enough.

Holy crap, I really hate that movie. To this day, I've only seen the first and last half hour bits. That's more than enough.

Epic/Date/Scary/Superhero/Disaster Movie (Also, Meet the Spartans)

There's nothing inherently wrong with spoof movies. I'm a huge fan Monty Python, Mel Brooks and even David Zucker's earlier stuff. Flicks like the Life of Brian, Young Frankenstein and Airplane! are silly, full of references and extreme performances. But the thing is, they're also riotously funny, and they've become modern cinematic classics.

Today's spoof movies are a different animal altogether. Lazy, unfunny and uninspired, this newest wave of Naked Gun-wannabes can be seen as only aiming for one goal: striving for the lowest common denominator in taste, intelligence, and unfortunately, humor. I'm ashamed to admit that I've seen more than one of these terrible, awful films. I've spoken with my local clergy, and I feel that I've been absolved of these sins, but the painful memory remains.

I don't even want to talk about these anymore. I'll only advise you that, if you see any movie, regardless of specific title, that reminds you of one of these, run for the hills. That is, unless it came out before 1980, of course. (I know a previous post argued against such a mentality, but in this case, it's warranted!)

RENT

Here's the description I found on imdb.com:

Based on Puccini's 'La Boheme', 'Rent' tells the story of one year in the life of friends living the Bohemian life in modern day East Village, New York City, 1989-1990. Among the group are our narrator, nerdy love-struck filmmaker Mark Cohen; the object of Mark's affection, his former girlfriend, Maureen Johnson; Maureen's Harvard-educated public interest lawyer and lesbian lover Joanne Jefferson; Mark's roommate, HIV-positive musician and former junkie, Roger Davis; Roger's new girlfriend, the HIV-positive drug addicted S&M dancer, Mimi Marquez; their former roommate, HIV-positive computer genius Tom Collins; Collins' HIV-positive drag queen street musician/lover Angel; and Benjamin Coffin III, a former member of the group who married for money and has since become their landlord and the opposite of everything they stand for. Shows how much changes or doesn't change in the 525,600 minutes that make up a year.

I don't want to talk about that movie anymore. Couldn't hate it more.

And that's our (relatively) brief and very incomplete list. We'd like to thank all the good movies out there to give us something against which to compare these terrible, terrible pieces of garbage. We'll be back soon with yet another tirade against Things That Are Ruining America.

Those of you unfortunate enough to catch Indiana Jones and The Kingdom of the Crystal Skull at the trailer may have already caught an earlier trailer for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but this new expanded and Hi-Definition trailer really gives you a sense of what David Fincher is trying to achieve. The film is an adaptation of the 1920s short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald and deals with a man who is born old and proceeds to live his life backwards.

Even more exciting than the concept is the director. David Fincher is probably one of the best current American directors, his work is always visually arresting and is often epoch making. As a director he’s responsible for some of the cultural touchstones of the 1990s (Seven and Fight Club both capturing the zeitgeist in their own peculiar way) and his last film (the absolutely wonderful) Zodiac showcased a director who had truly matured as a filmmaker.

Shot on digital like his previous film the trailer showcases yet another sublime visual offering from Fincher. Even though the choice of music is a little rote (it’s a piece called “The Aquarium” from the musical suite Carnival of Animals if you’re interested) the scenes depicted look absolutely incredible. Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett feature heavily in the film as the eponymous Mr. Button and his love respectively and hopefully this will be the film that finally gets Pitt some recognition as a notable actor.

Despite being a massive comic book and foreign film geek, this is probably my most anticipated film of the year. It's due out on general release in December, but it should be floating around some film festivals before then.

director David Fincher(Fight Club, Se7en,The game) recently has teamed up with Brad Pitt to create movie based on a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backwards with bizarre consequences.

Director David Fincher said "It's dark, it's romantic, and it also deals with mortality in a pretty unflattering way. Button is born in 1919 - with the film itself beginning in World War I, traveling around the world and carrying on all the way through to the year 2000."

hmm....oscar nominations...

David Fincher is back after Zodiac with Curious case of Benjamin Button, with Brad Pitt, a wierdly interesting movie about a man who starts ageing backwards..

Coen Brothers will try to tickle the funny bones with their black comedy-thriller burn after reading featuring Brad Pitt, Geore Clooney and Francis Mc Dormand can it get anymore exciting?

Also Christopher Nolan's Batman, with the ever dependable Michael cain, Christian bale and the deceased Heath Ledger, it is said that the preparation, acting, mental state of joker's role that ledger involved himself in took its toll, sadly his death, from the trailers it looks like he put his every iota of soul brains and heart into it...lets see.

Talking of Christopher Nolan, who made Memento (our own repellent ghajini) I am reminded of a wonderful magical master piece called The Prestige, If you never watched it, take my word you have to.

Thats all for now....wait a minute am not done yet...later next year....Di caprio, Kate winslet and Sam Mendes of American Beauty team up for Revolutionary Road...David Fincher will bring us Rendezvous with Rama (great Arthur C clarke's sci-fi Novel) super talent Bryan Singer does a movie on one of the major, almost successful plot to kill scumbag hitler, Valkyrie and then Johnny Depp's Shantaram.

I Love Hollywood!!

and now I stop.
