1º Ubuntu | 2º openSuSe | 3º Fedora | 4º PCLinuxOS / Mandriva | 5º Debian

Top Ten reasons I like Open Source

Why I like Open Source.
I like freedom. I don’t like being told what to do. When my oper

Why I like Open Source.

I like freedom. I don't like being told what to do. When my operating system tells me that I have to press ok or cancel, I feel like I am being dictated too. When my operating system tells me that I am not allowed to use a piece of software at all, my conviction grows. When my operating cripples music, insists on an internet connection to prove that it is payed for and so on, I know I am the victim of a fascist regime.

If an open sourse operating system tells me I have to ok or cancel and I don't like it I can open the source code, find the module that asks the question and edit the code to give a third option, retry perhaps, or 'back' or whatever I like. I can then recompile the module and My operating system now acts like I want.

This is the fundemental difference between being controled by the words (code) of others, and having control over the words that run the machines (computers) that you own.

Open source software is controled by you, it does not control you. You are free to modify it, to hack it, to alter what it is and what it does, to pursue your own agenda, rather than be the victim of an agenda.

That is the first and foremost reason why I prefer open source. I should say I have never actually done that, I mean I have never recompiled a single piece of code, but that is not the point, which brings me to my second point.

I don't know who wrote the code for Microsoft MovieMaker, but I do know who wrote thecode for the Blender Sequence Editor. If I want to I can write him an email or perhaps chat to him on irc and ask him aabout his plans for future upgrades and alterations to his code. I cannot do that with commercial software. But it goes further, if the auther I know has no plans to add the feature I desire I can talk to other developers who might be more amenible, I can advocate and organise for features and functionality to be written by others for my benifit and the benifit of others. This is why I don't need to recompile code myself, others will do it for me, this is the second reason I like open source.

The third reason I like open source is because it is all (usually) free. The GIMP may not quite be photoshop, and Blender might not match every feature of 3D Studio Max (although it does have many features that 3Ds dosen't have), and Lumiera might still be just a gleam in the eyes of the Cinerella CV developers, but by not buying Vista, Adobe cs3, Office 2007, 3dsMax, Reason and so on, I save myself thousands and thousands of dollars, I also avoid any legal issues of piracy and copyright violation, I don't pay a cent, and I dont commit a crime. Nice.

The forth reason I love open source is that there are so many programs out there it makes you head spin, browsing through getdeb, ohloh, freashmeat, lxer, fsdaily, planet ubuntu, gnomefiles, and on and on, scrolling through the synaptic lists of availables, looking at linuxalt and osalt and so on, checking out university department pages, over and over I come across nifty and exciting pieces of software, often so obscure that if I wanted to buy a comercial versionI wouldn't know how to start lookingand iwould probably end up paying thousands or finding that the open source version is the only thing that exists.

The fifth reason I like open source is that it is open. Microsoft talk about how this or that open source project violates thier copyrights, but how do we know? Half Microsoft's codebase could be flagrently ripped off from open source for all we know, we can't read the code, they are closed. Closed source means secrecy, obfuscation and lies, it means hiding what you have done and trying to trick others into thinking no one else can do it. Open source is open, it is about truth and sharing and communication, itis as awsome as that dude.

The sixth reason I like open source is because it fucks with economics. It is a massive movement, comprising millions upon millions of lines of code, milions upon millions man hours worked, all for free, all being used by productive and innovative persons for free, having a huge and pretty much unmeasurable impact on the software industry and by extension on other industries, all based on a paradigm that ignores money, ignores profit, and behaves in a way that to a classical economist seems completely irrational. The idea that people might be willing to work, for free, just to see something materialise that might benifit many fucks up the most fundemental axioms of positive economics, and I like that.

The seventh reason i like open source is because it fosters in me a feeling of belonging to a community where I have no walls, where my efforts might one day ged me a nod from Linus or a check from Donald, where someone in Bolivia might use my image as thier desktop wallpaper or someone in Romania might code up that idea I had for a feature in Blender or That I might get 'dug', and that it is all a seemless continuity, I am not a consumer, I am not an employee, I ama member of a community I both use and create and collaborate with others through a free and transparent exchange of information.

The eigth reason I like open source is the learning. I remember when I did not know whata gnome was, or the difference between a kernel and kettle, or how to configure a mixed home wireless network, and when the command line filled me with nothing but dread, I remember when I wouldnt have known where to start in researching fixes for my onboard soundcard, and so on and so on. Open source has transformed me from a child in a cage, being handed 'safe' toys by mother microsoft, to being a young man on the open plains, hunting for his own food.

Number nine is Linux and Debian and Ubuntu and the GIMP and Blender and Gnome and GNU and Open Office and Gedit and Ardour and Inkscape and Scribus and Emacs and Latex and Lyx and Fontforge and Dia and Firefox and Sunbird and Vim and Bash and Python and Glade and Lumiera and Synaptic and every other great fantastic project out there that I use so seemlesly and effortlessly on my crappy old thinkpads (oooohhh, lets not forget Atheros and the HAL).

Number ten is BoingBoing and Creative Commons and Distrowatch and Google and wordpress and Slashdot and Deviantart and Wikipedia and Mozilla and on and on to all the places in the world where I can communicate for free and freely.

So there you haveit, thats why I like open source, some of the reasons anyway,I amsure more will occur to me as I go about my day.

... like xkcd, dinosaur comix, moo cards, miro, mythtv, eeepc, neuros....

Eight distros. Seven days. One tired blogger.

In seven words, that pretty much wraps up the "Eight Distros a Week" series, named after (of course) the Beatles song "Eight Days a Week."

I have used more than eight distros -- AntiX, Debian, Fedora, Fluxbuntu, gNewSense, Linux Mint, Wolvix and Xubuntu -- but these eight are the ones that I use most, talk about most and would recommend to those looking for a distro.

I do sometimes -- and have in the past -- used others. These include:

Yellow Dog Linux: While Yellow Dog seems to be putting its proverbial eggs in the PlayStation 3 basket, the distro does have a history as being the distro for Macs. Yellow Dog 3 "Sirius" is a better-than-average distro for Old World Macs using BootX on a separate partition, and its Red Hat roots make is very adequate for those Macs that predate the turn of the 21st century. However -- you knew that was coming -- Terra Soft Solutions, the parent company for Yellow Dog, is not exactly the most user-friendly company, unless you plop down $70 for an "Enhanced User Account" for YDL.net. By the way, if you're tired of digging around for the download page for Yellow Dog, it's here. You're welcome.

Red Hat: I use Red Hat at school (Go Cabrillo College Seahawks!). Red Hat works behind the scenes for a variety of companies with which I have daily contact. As a distro, Red Hat is ubiquitous and there's really nothing I can add to the volumes written by one of the oldest distros. It's huge, it works, it's corporate -- what more can you say?

Mandriva: I can't figure out Mandriva. At a recent installfest at Cabrillo College in Aptos, Calif., an 11-year-old installed Mandriva on his Dell boxes. In the process, I put it on a Dell box that was doing nothing but sitting there, and I thought the distro worked well. But I installed it once on a laptop and, for some reason, when I went to change the distro, the BIOS had changed to where I couldn't boot from the CD. Easily fixed, of course, but the thing is I didn't change the BIOS. My wife and daughter didn't, and neither did the cat. Mysterious, I know, and more than likely it had nothing to do with the use of Mandriva, but until I can explain some of the strange things that happen when I try Mandriva, I'm avoiding it.

Knoppix: I've had this Knoppix CD that I've been carrying around for nearly two years, but it wasn't until recently that I used it for an emergency. If there were a Nobel Prize for distros, Klaus Knopper should top the short list -- not only was the disk helpful in solving my problem, I kept it on the machine for a significant amount of time while I waded through what it had to offer. It's great, but I don't use it too often.

Ubuntu: While I'm happy with Xubuntu, whenever I try Ubuntu on an Intel box or laptop, I keep thinking, "You know, this screams out 'Debian' to me," and I generally lose interest. Another thing that usually keeps me at an arm's length from Ubuntu is the split-screen syndrome -- the Live CD always gives me a bonus in the screen department with two screens, and I know how to fix it (and do), but I have to say I'm just not a bandwagoner, although I recognize and appreciate Ubuntu's contributions to FOSS.

One of the universal digital truths is that the difference between most distros is painfully minuscule, and that the object with having a plethora of options -- some 350 active distros, according to Distrowatch's count -- is the beauty behind the freedom of choice you have regarding what runs your computer.

Ever wonder which distribution is better? Well, it is not a simple question to answer. All the linux

Ever wonder which distribution is better? Well, it is not a simple question to answer. All the linux distributions have their good and their bad, as they are all headed for the same goal, and the only ones that could be given the title of being "better" would have to be the ones that are most maintained. Also, another factor that plays into the "better" category would have to be how many people like the distribution and use it.

One website to find this out on is Distrowatch, a website based on monitoring the hundreds of linux distributions out on the net. Now this website only has one flaw in it and it is a major one. The rankings they have are based on the amount of hits that the distribution's main website receives every day/week/month/year. As this is the most logical way to rank an OS, it is not the most realistic. There is a possibility that more people go to a distribution's website just to check it, and not necessarily download it and use it.

Now, the ones that I have personally used are Ubuntu, Mandriva, PCLinuxOS, and Debian. All are great distributions and each has their own look and feel.

Ubuntu is by far the most popular. Perhaps the reason is the fact that some Dell and HP computers are now sold with Ubuntu as the main Operating System on them. Although they are few, it is still a start in the direction of a mainstream Linux Operating System. Ubuntu has it's own little problems, mostly dealing with drivers and codecs. I personally stuck with Ubuntu as it was the most familiar and, as i found it to be, a little more convenient than the others.

Mandriva is another popular distribution based on Red Hat. Mandriva is an rpm-based distribution and is different from Ubuntu and Debian. Mandriva is an excellent distribution for its look and feel. Those who like a smooth interface and beautiful designed artwork in their system would love using this distribution. For me, the rpm system was just too different for my tastes and was hard to get used to.

PCLinuxOS is perhaps Ubuntu's main competitor. The system is directed in the direction of being easy to use and to work right out of the box. It is designated to those who would like to use Linux but not have to deal with too much of the Terminal. PCLinuxOS was built to be a "better" Mandriva Linux and in my opinion, it has become that.

Debian is perhaps the mother of all distributions out there, parallel to Red Hat Linux. Many of the distributions are based on it and use its package management system APT. Debian was built to create a more stable and maintained Softlanding Linux System. Debian has become a very stable and wellbuilt system, offering the most comprehensive interface. Another thing that people should take into consideration is that many of the favorite distributions out there would not exist today if it had not been for Ian Murdock building this system.

Again, I must stress that fact that everyone has their preferences, but in my opinion Ubuntu is perhaps going to lose its title soon if the Ubuntu team does not speed up the process of fixing the many bugs that exist in the system.

In an effort to have just a little more control over what I write, on which of the many PCs I use I

In an effort to have just a little more control over what I write, on which of the many PCs I use I write it, and where I post it (i.e. to one or more of the blogs and other sites to which I'm spreading the news), I started to use Google Docs again.

The problem being that I can hardly keep track of anything that I didn't write and post instantly. I've got three notebooks, each a different size (one "moleskin" type book, though no skins were harmed in its making; one composition book; one steno notepad), and a number of computers ($15 Laptop, $0 Laptop, converted Maxspeed Maxterm thin client, Dell Optiplex GX520, iBook G4), have of which change Linux distros as often as most people change underwear (that's daily, for those of you not following), with /home partitions constantly moving, being deleted and otherwise being ignored.

So the theory is that by centralizing everything on Google Docs, I can better keep track of what is where, what is going where and what went where. That's the theory anyway.

And while I'm on the subject, it's time for me to make complete backups of all my blogs, especially Click, which has the most posts and is on a server that is nowhere near as reliable as those of Google or WordPress. The great thing about WordPress, as far as backups go, is the ability to export the entire blog as XML. For Google, and probably for Movable Type, I'll just have to save monthly archives going all the way back

But I haven't been the most prolific blogger of late. It all began when the esteemed, highly qualified individuals who run the insidesocal.com blogs (including Click) decided that the best way to stop DNS-level spam attacks was to put an IP block on the entire European continent, costing me every link I could hope to get for Linux-related material (yep, Linux and FOSS is huge in Europe; where else would they even think of publishing "Debian Fur Dummies"?).

So I stopped pimping Click and started this blog, also throwing items to the great LXer. Losing Distrowatch as a source of links to reviews of Linux and BSD distros was probably the biggest blow. So I've pretty much been not caring about traffic on Click, which hovers at a steady 150-250 a day.

Distrowatch has released some interesting stats about prominent distributions.
First one is the page hit rank (PHR) on the day of the distribution release.
As expected Ubuntu tops the number of page hits on its release date, followed by PCLinuxOS and OpenSUSE.

The Top 10 are

Ubuntu 7.10

PCLinuxOS 2007

openSUSE 10.3

Fedora 8

Debian GNU/Linux 4.0

Mandriva Linux 2008

SimplyMEPIS 6.5

Gentoo Linux 2007

Slackware Linux 12.0

Sabayon Linux 3.4

The Other stats relates to the number of people using IRC channel of a distribution.
Here again Ubuntu is way ahead of others. However, there is a huge deviation from PHR and we have Gentoo on second place followed by debian.

The Top 10 in this list are

Ubuntu

Gentoo Linux

Debian GNU/Linux

Kubuntu

FreeBSD

Arch Linux

Slackware Linux

Fedora

openSUSE

CentOS

Mandriva occupies 12 place and the current Distrowatch PHR topper PCLinuxOS is at 18th position.
Key thing to note is that Ubuntu had 1,240 users on IRC where as PCLOS had just 32.

The IRC stats collector Marijn Schouten concluded:
"I think that IRC statistics are more representative of current number of users while PHR is more representative of the number of people that are not actually using a distro, but are merely curious as to what sets it apart from the others. Such interest is more fickle than being an actual user of a distro. Therefore I think IRC rank is more representative of the actual size of the community around a distro, which I think is the relevant measure to rank distros by."

Now this does not go well with me. IRC is more for technical users; most of my friends using Linux never log on to any IRC channel. If they have any issue, they Google for it or look at the distribution Forums. My claim to technical users using IRC is further supported by the fact that "geeky" distributions ( Gentoo, Debian, Arch, Slackware and CentOS) and operating system ( FreeBSD) constitute majority of the top 10 list. Not sure how many average users use either of the above listed ones as their desktop operating system. I was a great fan of Arch Linux on desktop, untill I found PCLOS and gave in to ease of use, however, I do not consider myself as average user.

Ubuntu is a distribution used equally by geeks as well as average user. We see too many software being developed on top of Ubuntu, mac4Lin being a very good example. Hence, I assume that those developers contribute to high number of users of Ubuntu in IRC.

If you have a different opinion, please share it.
