Despite his crushing defeat in yesterday’s West Virginia’s primary, Democratic President

Despite his crushing defeat in yesterday's West Virginia's primary, Democratic Presidential Candidate Barack Obama -- pictured below in a rocking Photoshop tribute by über blogger Kevin Chu -- managed to score another major endorsement today, this time from ex-rival John Edwards.

And though I still wish Edwards himself was a part of this race -- go, Tar Heels! -- I gotta say that with Johnny Edwards joining the ever-expanding roster of powerful Dems endorsing Obama (hell, even Clinton's political mentor George McGovern has announced his support for Obama!) Clinton seems destined for a VP position, at best, at this point.

And I'm not saying that would be bad...I mean, even Clinton supporters have gotta agree that an Obama-Clinton ticket would be damn near unbeatable come November. Of course, I'm sure she'd rather be on top of that ticket, but hey...she'd make a damn fine VP too. I mean, shit...after eight years of President Cheney making most of the decisions in Washington, it'd be kinda cool to have co-Presidents who actually know what they're doing this time around!

But until Clinton accepts the inevitable and joins Obama to rule the galaxy as President and Vice President she can take comfort in some of the really cool things Edwards said about her today.

Sharing the stage with Obama at a rally in Grand Rapids, Edwards said: “She’s a leader in this country not because of her husband, but because of what she has done.” and gushed further that: “We are a stronger party because Hillary Clinton is a Democrat.” Whoa...talk about your Southern charm! Edwards might have stabbed Clinton in the back, but man, he did it with style!

Seriously, though...I couldn't agree with Edwards more. Hilary Clinton (and Obama) have made this battle for the Democratic presidential nomination one of the most electrifying in recent memory. I mean, think about it, people who've never voted in their lives are actually getting up off their asses and voting...in primaries! Amazing!

So, keep on keeping on, Jedi Master Obama. The Force is clearly strong with you. And something tells me that it's only a matter of time before you are joined on the ticket by Vice Jedi Master Clinton...or at least I hope so.

Your doctor has two or more letters behind his/her name. Did you ever stop to think what those mean?

Your doctor has two or more letters behind his/her name. Did you ever stop to think what those mean?

Let's start with the common ones relating to medical school:
M.D.- this is the usual American Doctor of Medicine (from the latin Medicinae Doctor). Each of these physicians has graduated from an accredited (or equivalent) medical school. Virtually every jurisdiction in the US requires that licensee complete a bachelors degree (or substantial undergraduate education). This is the degree conferred by essentially every American medical school. In contrast, the M.D. is actually a higher degree in some foreign contries indicating substantial post-medical school education.

D.O.- Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine. Osteopathic medical schools are largely indistinguishable from allopathic (MD) medical schools with one exception. Osteopathic medical schools continue to teach manipulation similar to that used by chiropractors. Most "osteopaths" do not use manipulation routinely after graduation. Many osteopaths have post-graduate training in allopathic residencies. No states in the US distinguish between MD and DO degrees. Both are referred to as doctor.

Now the titles get more colorful:
M.B. B.S.- Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. This is the combination of two degrees conferred primarily by English and (formerly)commonwealth countries. It is an undergraduate degree in that students generally go straight from high school to a professional school. The school encompasses five or more years of study. Graduates are generally recognized as "doctor."

There are many forms of MBBS. The most interesting comes from McGill University in Canada. M.D. C.M.- Medicinae Doctorem et Chirurgiae Magistrum (Doctor of Medicine, Master of Surgery). A fancy name meaning "doctor." Other Variations also include: MB ChB, BM BCh, BMed, MB BChir, BM BS. Again, all are referred to as doctor.

My favorite medical degree however comes from Ireland. M.B. B.S. B.A.O. The BAO stands for
Baccalaureus in Arte Obstetricia (Bachelor of the Obstetric Art or Bachelor in the Art of Obstetrics). Now thats a cool name.

Many states allow doctors to use "MD" regardless of what their actual degree says. Osteopaths will always distinguish themselves and generally will refuse to use MD.

Be informed. It's your health.

More than half of my life was spent in Methodist Girls’ School (MGS), and only I left did I re

More than half of my life was spent in Methodist Girls' School (MGS), and only I left did I realized that it was such a dear place to me. That school held all my memories and friendships made when I was 7 to 16. (Yes, its 10 years.) I had a love-hate relationship to MG.

I hated studying a lot since young. When I was in primary school, I did not want to go to a secondary school. When I was secondary schooling, I was rather reluctant in studying after O levels. Now, in poly, I am very reluctant in going to university. Now you get the idea of Doreen's hate for studying/schooling.

However, I love MG for her culture and the people that were within it. Friends were the only reason I went to school. I remember my secondary 4 school life so clearly till date! It was the year I turned really naughty, breaking school rules whenever I can.

In my secondary 4 life, I lived as in I had spilt personality in school. I am always known to be the good girl to some teachers, and yet other teachers may think that I am the naughty girl. But my friends know it the best.
I remember how Jo and I would go toilet every now and then during lessons, and we found more of our classmates in the toilet hanging out. Sometimes we would really dread to go for lessons I did not like and count down 15 minutes in the toilet. Haha, it was the best thing ever. And the teacher always would still believe that we were doing our business in the toilet, or either they cannot get bothered with us anymore. But maybe the teacher forgot that we went to the toilet. I had a chemistry that did not know I existed in her class for a whole 2 years. It was only after my prelims did she realized that I have been scoring F9s my whole entire life in chemistry under her. That's how I am unknown in school with the teachers. I do not really create trouble in school or do well in my studies to the extent of getting the attention of my teachers.

Oh, and how I miss the days we were so bored in class that Jo and I had to plan what to do in class during recess. We would go to the bookshop and find any fun stuff to play with for 4-5 hours. It was just plain joy. We would seriously do anything to get boredom off us. We cut ice cream sticks; made things out of nothing; coloured in colouring books, play with blue tack and glue; cut anything we see; ... you name it, I guessed we did it in class.

And there were lessons that we could not be caught doing our ‘handicrafts' in class, so I remembered clearly how Jo and I had a challenged with wasabi coated green peas. Both of us had a box of wasabi under our tables, and we challenged who could finish all their peas without getting caught by the teacher. Those were the days I started to practice how to be immune to wasabi. And I remembered how my wasabi coated greens peas rotted under my desk over the weekend cos I totally forgot about it! :X
A must for all students, is to PON school. How can I not have done that? I have started skipping school since I was primary 6. My longest record to skip school without a ‘valid' reason was a week in primary 6. I remember how Faith, Rachel and I would analyse our timetable so carefully and mark the days it was best to not come to school. And for some of the few days that I came to school, I would either left school early or just stay in the sick bay. I always had valid reason so I was easily believed. (Oh wells, perhaps my teacher cannot get bothered with me anymore as all these only happened the end of secondary 4.)

So fun, I miss my dear friends and school badly. As I am writing this post, I can see images (or even video playbacks) of what we would do in school. It was really fun, joy and laughter for me. How bad school got with all the schoolwork, I still loved it. I loved everything about MG, maybe the very stressful life there too! I can picture myself in the canteen, having recess, I can picture myself in the toilet hanging out with friends, I can picture myself doing nonsense in class with Jo, I CAN PICTURE MYSELF GOING TO SCHOOL IN MY MG UNIFORM!

I do still get to meet my close friends quite often though we are in different school. In average count, I think I meet Jo almost once every week! But, I still miss all my friends having class together. It was plain LOVE to be in MG, an ALL-GIRL school. You would never know if you have not been in one.

During Jesus Christ’s ministry, His faithful disciples often heard gospel principles taught by thought-provoking short stories known as parables. Jesus utilized a fantastic teaching tool, knowing that stories sink deep into the memory. The more a story is pondered, the more meaningful they can become.

Thus, when a lawyer chose to challenge the Savior on a point of doctrine, Jesus used His masterful technique. The Book of Luke, chapter 10 records the event. Attempting to entrap Jesus, the lawyer asked, “Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?”Jesus responded with a question of His own: “What is written in the law? how readest thou?” The lawyer recited the law perfectly: “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbour as thyself”. Jesus acknowledged the correct answer and replied: “This do, and thou shalt live”.

Having failed to confound the Master, the lawyer was embarrassed. He sought justification by making a further inquiry, “And who is my neighbour?”

Presiding Bishop H. David Burton said "We should be very grateful for the lawyer’s second question! From it came one of the most insightful of the Savior’s parables."

Jesus' story begins with these famous words:

"A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed leaving him half dead”.

The first to arrive on the crime scene is a priest. But he hurries over to the other side of the road and quickly walks away. Then a Levite comes down the road, and he refuses to stop or help. The story automatically makes us wonder how a priest and a Levite could walk past a dying, bleeding man. But we like to reassure ourselves that surely we would be different. We would have stopped and helped.

The parable continues: “But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw [the victim], he had compassion on him. And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him."

Upon completing the parable, the Savior asked the lawyer “Which now of these three … was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves?”

The lawyer quickly identified that obviously it was the one who had shown mercy—the kind and caring traveler from Samaria.

Jesus then admonished to “go, and do thou likewise” (Luke 10:37; emphasis added)

The doctrine of Jesus Christ is not only based on love but on action. His familiar calls to DO something include: "turn the other cheek", "go the extra mile", "love thy neighbor as thyself", "Take my yoke upon you", and "Feed my Sheep". In his Sermon on the Mount, he commanded that we should not only love those who are loveable, but also love our enemies, bless them that curse us, do good to them that hate us, and pray for them that despitefully use us and persecute us. (Matt. 5:44.) He explained the purpose for doing all of this:

“For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? Do not even the publicans so?”

The ultimate goal is not actually what we choose to DO, or our level of performance, but rather what happens inside our hearts because we took action. Developing the desire to serve others out of genuine love and concern, even strangers and enemies, is the way to become truly "Christlike". The scriptures call this type of love charity, and it is considered the "greatest of all" and the “pure love of Christ" (1 Cor. 13:1-13, Moroni 7:37).

When we develop kindness, love and charity, our hearts are purified. And when our hearts are pure, we are able to dwell with God. (Ps. 24:3–4.)

Jesus is our perfect example in all things. He has “marked the path and showed the way” for us to walk. A simple definition of a “Christian” is a “follower of Christ”. This means one makes a commitment to follow Jesus’ example as closely as possible each day. Jesus was the ultimate example of "GO and DO". His good works never ceased. He showed the example of reaching out and touching the lives of people who crossed his path daily. He demonstrated that although we can choose to serve the masses (such as feeding the 5,000) the majority of the time we should simply serve individuals. Jesus devoted his life to serving one-by-one (a blind man, a leper, a child, a daughter, a son, a woman, etc…). Likewise, each of us may not be able to provide global relief, but we can make a difference in the life of another. There is a popular saying: “To the world you may not be somebody, but to somebody you are the world.”

Perhaps today we will each be on the lookout for that “somebody” who needs our personal touch. Sometimes even the idea of serving others causes fatigue, or overwhelming inadequacy. But it's comforting to remember that we are not supposed to save the world. A Savior has already completed that work for each of us. We are not required to “run faster than we have strength”, either. Our former prophet Gordon B. Hinckley taught this principle beautifully. He encouraged us to just “be a little kinder, reach a little higher, do a little better today than you did yesterday”. If we “do the best we can”, the Lord accepts our offering, and He makes up for the rest. And in turn we receive a "new heart" (1 Sam. 10: 9, Ezek. 18: 31, Ezek. 36: 26)

When Jesus walked this earth, it was His hands which touched, lifted, healed, raised and blessed. Now, He continues His work through our hands.

With the new county ordinance threatening the lifeblood of Los Angeles' beloved taco trucks set to take effect on May 15th, tonight has been declared "Taco Libre!" night by our amigos at saveourtacotrucks.org.

And though we won't be able to make the festivities ourselves -- we hit two different taco trucks on Friday night alone, starting at one in Highland Park and then ending our evening at our old stand-by, Tacos La Fonda, in NoHo -- I urge anyone who has not been out there supporting the cause to head out to East L.A. tonight for a few tasty street tacos.

Tonight's event will be held at the Tacos El Galuzo taco truck at 5555 Whittier Blvd. and promises to be a total fiesta for the record books. I mean, how can a party with a poster as cool as the one above NOT be memorable?

So, print up a copy of the poster for your collection (we did!), sign the petition here, and head on out to East L.A. for some rocking good grub!

Que viva los Taqueros!

Le Film de Burton Richardson,
créateur du Jeet Kune Do Unlimited !

Bonus

Mishkin Berteig has posted an interesting article regarding what he considers the best agile practic

Mishkin Berteig has posted an interesting article regarding what he considers the best agile practices to implement now, that is those that deliver the highest return on investment. After the recent reshuffle here I've had the opportunity to start to work more closely with a couple of our development teams which has been great.

I agree with all of the points that Mishkin makes, I would in fact add one to them, I think teams should be running Retrospectives from the outset, one of the fundamental principles certainly in Scrum terms is to Inspect and Adapt and it's not until a team starts to learn to understand its' own performance and has the desire to improve itself will they realise any value in what they're doing. Retrospectives give teams an opportunity to reflect over their last iteration / sprint and indeed over the entire time that they have been working towards delivering the software, it allows them to see the improvements that they've made as well as the areas that still need some work.

As I get to spend more time watching and helping teams adopt agile practices though, I'm starting to distil further my own opinions on how to approach a so called adoption, I think this largely boils down to 3 things:

1. Understand Why

It's a concern that so often I hear people talking about that fact that we're doing this one agile or see people doing a sit down stand up (the clue's in the title folks) just because they think they should be. Before you get started take a look at what you're already doing; what is it that you think you could be doing better, understand why you think you need to change, you could perhaps even consider running a retrospective to gather some information first.

2. Be able to clearly state your vision for any change

If you're going to make a change, I think you should be able to clearly state not only the reason why but the vision you have for how the change will be effected and most importantly where you're aiming for. In that, I also think you should need to be able to measure how effective the change you're making is. Discuss the principles that are aligned with your vision, I think the Lean Software Development principles are a pretty good starting point for a discussion round this.

3. Don't use the word agile

This is a bit of a difficult one. If you're going to change what you're doing and even have any inclination to want to use agile techniques, don't call it agile. Why? Well, for a couple of reasons, firstly there are those people that you'll come across that are naturally resistant to it and it's better not to expose yourself to that pain in the first place and secondly, I don't think that to be agile should be the end goal, sure business agility will deliver a lot of benefit to your organisation which they'll thank you for but agile isn't necessarily the only way to achieve that, by constantly reviewing what you're doing and aspiring to do it better at all times you'll deliver huge value, Dr Deming's plan-do-check-act cycle (on which agile is loosely based) should help you there as a framework by which to carry that out.

I'd be interested to hear what you all think, have I missed the point or am I along the right lines?

Was seeing a patient for the first time the other day when, toward the end of my visit with her, she

Was seeing a patient for the first time the other day when, toward the end of my visit with her, she asked, "So...are you a real doctor?"

I wasn't quite sure how to respond.

Missing a beat, I then replied, "Well, no, actually. I'm just a resident. Training. Dreaming big dreams of one day being the real thing." I felt a bit like Pinocchio.

"What I mean is," She continued, unperturbed, "are you really just a nurse. You know, one of those nurses that acts like a doctor...or are you actually a doc?"

"OH!" I reply, thinking oh yes...THIS stupid conversation. (It's endless, it goes on and on. It's like the circumcision debate) "Yeah. I'm a real doc. Except for the 'in training' thing."

"Great, because I normally see a nurse, but I'd much rather just see you."

Obviously, this kind of thing makes me feel a bit pleased that I have impressed a patient enough to want to see me again. But it could be simply that this patient wants to see me instead of her nurse largely because of the interaction of their two personalities. My medical acumen may have very little to do with it.

ARNP's, PA's, NP's and the rest all serve important roles. In all honesty, many of them know more than I do about medicine and sometimes I frankly can't come up with any good reason why a patient should go to me rather than to them.

When I DO get my hackles up, however, is when I find that those professions not only disrespect mine, but see family doctors as superfluous. A recent circulating rumor I heard is that the latest national NP conference displayed a HUGE banner on their wall claiming that in time, they would put family medicine out of business. I'm the kind of guy who isn't too competitive until you try to crush me under your boot...or, white nurse's shoe, as it were. Then I get a little riled.

First, let me present a very basic sketch differentiating between the training demands of MD's like me and some of the other midlevels:

Clinical training hours:
DNP: 1000* (this is the latest nursing degree you can get...a doctor of nursing. Sounds a bit oxymoronic to me, really).
PA: 2400
MD/DO: >12,000

*Can be done PT & online

Look at the difference. It's unbelievable. MD's and DO's train more than 5 TIMES longer than the next highest mid-level. This doesn't mean these people aren't smart, or that they don't know lots of medicine. At times, they might know more than an MD about a particular ailment. But on average, their training pales in comparison.

More concerning is that limited training can lead to limited humility. I once heard the a guy say that the definition of an expert is someone who is exquisitely familiar with what s/he does NOT know. The more training you have, the more likely you will know when you are beyond your knowledge or abilities, and avoid the dangers of the Dunning-Kruger effect (read 'bout it here). The D-K effect is the phenomenon where people who know little tend to think they know more than they do, while people who know a lot tend to think they know less than they do. Given the propensity for medicine to hurt you, or save you from something terrible, let me assure you the best doctor is in the latter category, not the former.

I don't have any problem with mid-level medical providers, of all shapes and sizes. But I do think that - aside from my own bias as a result of all the training sacrifices I've made over the years - MD's and DO's should be understood to be the best-trained, and certainly not replaceable. Although my first inclination about why my patient wanted to drop her NP to stay with me had to do with their personalities, it is also true that poll after poll shows that patients would rather be taken care of by a doctor, not a PA or a ARNP or NP.

Finally, an analogy:

In college I went to this church called Calvary Chapel. These churches pride themselves on the fact that most of their pastors don't have a seminary degree (they were "called by God", just like the original mostly uneducated disciples). At the church I went to, one guy had been to seminary and all the other pastors hadn't. Guess who I liked the most? The seminary guy. He just knew stuff. He taught better, and I learned more.

I think it's the same way for many patients. Most would rather be seen by a person who has taken care of people in hospitals, been there when they were born, held their hands when they died. They would rather have a doc who has worked in ER's and has actually done CPR on a real human not a doll named Annie.

So much of medicine is about experience. Every day, people come in with a cough and need me to tell them if it's gonna kill them. Odds are good it won't. But is it MRSA pneumonia? The sentinel case of pulmonary anthrax? PCP pneumonia? Not likely. Only God really knows. The rest of us have to rely on knowledge and experience. Doctors have simply see more bad stuff than mid-levels; there's a better chance we'll make the right call.

Fundamentally, when an MD says, "In my experience..." it's a very different statement than when a mid-level says it. We pay a heavy price to see all that we have, but in the end, that experience may just be what saves your life.

there is an alley behind my office, affectionately referred to as piss alley by me and my work friends.

despite its name, piss alley doesn't actually smell of piss, it's just really fucking scary and up until last weekend i would recommend anyone (even the boys) to take a 10 minute detour.

i was actually really happy they'd close the tunnel, when i read that banksy would be holding fort in a 'tunnel near waterloo' and i realized piss alley would never be the same again.

i had a lot to catch up on last week so i hadn't been able to make it down until today. piss alley has improved so much, it's ridiculous.

it's gone from one of the most unpleasant places in london (even bums prefer the adjacent tunnel to set up camp) to a street even suits are happy to walk through, even while turning up their noses at the vermin taking shots of the 'art' lining the walls.

if they could do this to every tunnel in london i'd be very pleased.

anyway, i took a bunch of shots (and will be spending a few more lunch hours there exploring) but noticed that (besides of the obvious installation work, such as the crashed cars) some of the work on the walls has already been taken down as well, so be sure to check out the rest of flickr for a better image or just go there yourself before Boris makes good on his promise to tackle graffiti.

Well, I'm pretty much done with the preparation for my English exam - its just oral exam. I do not get up in English writing exam this year, that is next year, so I have still some time to work on my English writing skills. So I'm just relaxing and setting my self up to it.
I have just finnished a book called ''The case Lundin. The crime, investigation, media and evilness'' on Danish ''Sagen Lundin. forbrydelsen, opklaringen, medierne og ondskaben''. I can only recommend this book, especially if you are interested in the man Peter Lundin.
(I do not won't to take credit for others work, so I'm linking to the wikipedia.com - instead of just type in the text on my blog) - the link.
I have no idea of which book I'm gonna read now. But I'm sure that its gonna be a biography about a person that I'll find interesting - so a trip to the local library is planned.

James had his first ever jujitsu competition yesterday and requested my presence to film the beating that was about to ensue.

lots of things went wrong; we arrived late, James had only been entered into one of the competitions he had wanted to be in and it wasn't the one he had been looking forward to (sparring vs. groundwork) and the announcer subtly advised us that anyone registered for competition should participate in the course work prior to the event, basically singling out James who was the only one in jujitsu gear still in the rafters at that point, bar a handful of eight year olds...

things got even better when the chav mums around me starting yelling at their offspring, especially when we discovered that James' event wouldn't be on till quite late in the afternoon.

i was this - close to resenting him for making me sacrifice a beautiful saturday that could have been spent by the pool (not to mention sleeping in, rather than waking up at 7am to catch a train to southend on sea) when he was called to the floor.

i'm glad i was assigned a task. i was too busy focusing on trying to film something (for the first time ever) to be too concerned with the punches he took, i know too little about jujitsu to be able to tell whether it was going well and i was too far away to notice there was apparently blood flowing everywhere (exaggeration).

slightly concussed afterwards (James, not me) i managed to convince him not to take his clothes off in front of everyone else and go to the changing rooms instead.

even though he lost his first round he was pretty pleased with himself, got a good impression of what competing is actually like and had some nice footage to boot as well, so in the end i was glad i was there for it.

we would have explored the area a bit beyond the local la tasca were it not for the fact that we were in essex and headed home instead.
