You know, Sean, I've playing depressing or cynical songs most of the week in connection with the bailout. I had a few songs stashed away on the subject of happiness.

Some, unsurprisingly, are rather cynical, but here we go:

Happiness Is A Warm Gun - The Beatles

I'm sure you know by now about my liking for the Beatles. By far and away, my favorite lyric from this song is "Mother Superior jump the gun."

Most likely because it makes me picture nuns with guns.

Spread A Little Happiness - Sting

This song is being sung by Sting, and this clip is from the end of the movie "Brimstone and Treacle". I haven't watched that movie, but him singing this song is supposed to be heavily ironic.

Even without having all the information, I shuddered at the look at the end. And reading a summary of the movie just gives me shivers. Just picture Sting as the devil in this clip, and you won't be far off.

Happiness Runs - Donovan

You may need to turn up the volume for this one. Unlike the last song, this one genuinely makes me happy. And it's very catchy.

And, yes, there are metaphysical overtones there.

Happiness runs in a circular motion;
Thought is like a little boat upon the sea.
Everybody is a part of everything anyway;
You can have everything if you let yourself be.

We want to know God, how He wants us to live, and how to live the lif

We want to know God, how He wants us to live, and how to live the life He wants us to live. Understanding the Bible is essential, because it is our inerrant, sufficient guide. And to understand the Bible, a little help can go a long way... (Acts 8:26-39)

Realistically, most of us don't have time to work through Harold Hoehner's 960 page commentary on the 6 chapters of Ephesians (as excellent, and surprisingly readable, as it is)! I think the most helpful resources for most of us (and, even if you would like more resources, the best place to start) are good, "meaty" Study Bibles and/or one or two volume commentaries on the whole Bible that operate on the conviction that the Bible is God's inspired, inerrant Word. I would suggest getting more than one of these so that you can compare notes... As insightful as pastors and scholars can be, none of them are perfect. Being able to weigh up differing arguments can be very helpful as we seek to make decisions ourselves, before God, based on the Biblical text itself.

Study Bibles:

The NIV Study Bible

Some praise this Study Bible for presenting several views in its notes. Others criticize it for stopping short of making a decision. As one reviewer on Amazon.com noted, the different views given are "on a convervative to moderate continuum - not liberal". I personally believe it can be helpful to know various views (as I mentioned above). I have found this Study Bible to be a good resource.

The MacArthur Study Bible

John MacArthur has preached through almost all of the New Testament in depth, and he had the help of The Master's Seminary faculty in researching the Old Testament before he worked through their research and reworked it into the final notes. This is a very good resource, available in both NKJV and NASB translations.

Though not yet released, I anticipate this being the best Study Bible available! A look at its contributors, features, and endorsements, makes it hard to think otherwise. A note on the ESV translation: The ESV has not been around very long. Nonetheless, it's attempt to marry readability (like the NIV) with more literal translation (like the NASB) has been widely praised by many leading pastors, authors, and scholars who now consider it their translation of choice (see here).

Other good Study Bibles include the Ryrie Study Bible (available in numerous translations) and The Reformation Study Bible (ESV).

This commentary is widely praised as the best one volume commentary available. It probably is! I have found mine to be a huge help. The commentary on some of the Bible books is done by authors who had previously written very extensive, very well received commentaries on the same book (such as Wenham on Genesis, and O'Brien on Colossians). I can't say this is the case in the comments on every verse related to these issues, but since this commentary is published by IVP, it is likely to be amillenial (IE: there is no literal, 1000 year reign of Christ on Earth) in interpretation, as well as egalitarian (IE: flattening out distinctions between men and women's roles). Our church teaches differently in these two areas.

The Expositor's Bible Commentary (Abridged Edition)

I've been told again and again by pastors and Bible professors that the original 12 volume set should be the first full set of commentaries to buy for one's library (more on that in a later post). Stand-out book commentaries in the set include Exodus by Kaiser, Psalms by Van Gemeren, and Matthew by Carson. I have the 12 volume set on CD-ROM, but I decided to get this abridged edition too. I would very much recommend either version.

The Bible Knowledge Commentary

This 2 volume commentary is very widely praised within premillenial circles (IE: Christians who believe Jesus will reign on earth for a literal 1000 years, etc). It is written entirely by Dallas Seminary faculty, and is thus quite consistant in its conclusions throughout. The commentary on some books is written by scholars in that particular field (eg. Ross on Genesis and Psalms, Merrill on Numbers, 1 and 2 Samuel, and 1 and 2 Chronicles, Hoehner on Ephesians, and Walvoord on Revelation). The quality is not as good on some other books where the commentary is written by men who specialize in other areas... Consistant with the theology of Dallas Seminary, you can expect the view that saving faith involves accepting Jesus as Savior without having to embrace Him as Lord (especially noticeable in Zane Hodges' commentary on Hebrews and 1,2,3 John).

The MacArthur Bible Commentary

This is not all that different to The MacArthur Study Bible (see comments above) - the major difference being that is has more maps and charts. It is probably not worth purchasing if you already have the Study Bible. If you don't have the Study Bible however, this resource offers a little more helpful material and might be the better buy (note that this book does not include the Biblical text, whereas the Study Bible does). This is a very good resource.

There are other good resources, for sure, but these are the ones I can recommend with the most confidence.

If I had to pick a "Top 3", I think it would be: The ESV Study Bible, The New Bible Commentary, and a version of The Expositor's Bible Commentary.

~ Donovan

It’s time for change. Instead of starting out complaining about how often the teams I want to

It's time for change. Instead of starting out complaining about how often the teams I want to win actually lose, and vice versa, I'm going to start out on a decent note. After burying his infant child on Saturday afternoon in Texas, Matt Bryant, kicker for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, converted 3 field goals and led his team to victory. Just being in the game was a victory for Bryant, but kicking his team to a victory was just a miracle. Any guy who can have that much courage and just be in the state of mind to do his job a day after burying a family member, especially one whose life was cut way to short, is remarkable. And even though he defeated my team, he still deserves some props. To all the Bryant family, sorry for the loss.. From Both of us who write these blogs, our hearts and prayers are with you.

And now time to write about my mistakes.

Green Bay 20 Tampay Bay 31 - Is it me or do the Packers always have a tough time playing in Tampa Bay? Aaron Rodgers and Brian Griese both threw three interceptions, but the key to the game was Rodgers self-proclaimed separated shoulder. Tests are being done today on his shoulder, but until the results come back, the Packers season is in limbo(Upgraded to shoulder sprain). Matt Flynn, who beat out Brian Brohm during the preseason, is their second string quarterback, and with his lack of experience, the Packers may be in trouble. The Packers play the young and upcoming Vickless (still funny) Falcons next week in Green Bay. Dealing with the loss of a family members, the Bucs played like they had a chip on their shoulder, and with the help of Matt Bryant and his son, who was watching the game from up above, the Bucs finished on top. The Packers are now on a 2 game losing streak heading into a week full of questions and concerns.

Arizona 35 vs New York Jets 56 - I guess Brett Favre's ankle is fully healed, and not to mention his shoulder. Brett Favre tapped into the record books again yesterday by leading his team to 34 points in the second quarter. Brett Favre picked apart the Arizona Cardinals defense, who decided they were going to play a soft zone defense, for 6 touchdowns and close to 300 yards. Anyone who doubted his ability, owes Brett Favre and for goodness sakes Deanna as well, an apology. If the Jets allow Favre to play like he did this week, then they surely will be fighting the Bills for top spot in the AFC East. And as an avid supporter of Brett, I'm proud to still own my Favre 4 President 08 shirt!

Dallas 24 vs Washington 26 - Once again, TO has the chance to prove himself and what does he do... EPIC FAIL! Over one-third of the plays Dallas did on Sunday were directed towards TO and what did he do...not a damn thing. Its a shame that someone that cocky and ignorant can talk the talk but cannot walk the walk. Oh yea, not to mention, he was still upset because not all the plays went to him. What a punk! Oh yeah Redskins, Good Game. Way to show the NFC East that you are back in it... for now.

Philadelphia 20 vs. Chicago 24 - Wow! The Bears actually did something productive. They actually beat someone who is "good". Yeas, the Eagles were without their RB but they still have Donovan McNabb and he's good enough by himself to beat the Bears, on most nights. The NFC North is going to be a tough division this year, minus the Lions that is. The Bears, Packers, and Vikings all have a chance to win the division... Keep your eyes out on this division!!!

I think it's the appropriate time to say a fond farewell to a great friend and horrible human being. In six years, this fellow did absolutely nothing for the NFL and it's most definitely a good thing that he has been axed! Times can't get any worse for the team that he drove right into the ground. Thanks Matt for all you have done, and lack thereof.

Matt Millen- Finally Gone!!!

Have a good week everyone...

- Nate

This was on the TV the other morning. It's funny how TV shows and commercials have replaced the MTV of old. The song "Catch the Wind" is from a 60's folk singer named Donovan. I've never heard of him but others may have. It kind of reminds me of David Gray, maybe a little Bright Eyes. What do you think?

A festa

I think many Christians have been so excited about a pro-life, dynamic, Christian VP candidate, that they haven't even given this question a second thought. I think we absolutely must wrestle with what the Bible says about this issue, as objectively and sober-mindedly as possible - just as we must wrestle with what the Bible says about any issue. Even if we emerge with the same belief, it is infinitely better to hold that belief, based squarely upon Scripture, than it is to hold a belief and be unsure of whether Scripture supports it.

I'll post more on this subject in the next few days. As an introduction, watch this CNN interview with Voddie Baucham and Margaret Feinberg (the first part of the video is unrelated - start watching around 55 seconds):

Last week I posted about God-honoring hip-hop, including an interview and song by a young hip-hop artist named Trip Lee. Trip is an active member of Epiphany Fellowship in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. This church appears to be a great example of what a Christ-exalting church looks like within inner city, hip-hop culture. Watch this video for their core values:

I think its very easy for us to make judgments based upon the surface level, and I have no doubt that some Christians would be hesitant about a church like this. In externals it may not seem "traditional" or "conservative", but in it's theology, values, mission and essence, this is a biblical church. In fact, this church is far more biblical and God-honoring than many, many churches that we might call "traditional" or "conservative" based upon surface level features... More on that in another post.

On a side note: One of Epiphany's pastors is William "Duce" Branch. He is better known as "The Ambassador", a solo hip-hop artist and one of four members of the group, "The Cross Movement".

I’m reading a book by Voddie Baucham called, “Family Driven Faith: Doing what it takes t

I'm reading a book by Voddie Baucham called, "Family Driven Faith: Doing what it takes to raise sons and daughters who walk with God". The weight of this illustration blew me away:

Telling the story of a young man who turned his back on the Lord when we went to college, Baucham says,

"Thomas' father had never missed one of his son's games. Moreover, it was his father who taught him how to throw a curve ball, how to put his body in front of a grounder, and how to turn a double play. In fact, Thomas' father was the coach on his first T-ball team. However, when I asked whether or not he led his son (and his family) in worship, his only response was, "I never even thought about it."

In other words, this man had spent countless hours and immeasurable amounts of energy teaching his son how to be a ballplayer but hadn't done a thing to teach him how to be a Christian. When I pressed him on the issue, he said, "I thought the youth pastor was doing a good job of that." The point here is so obvious that I hesitate to state it. When it came to baseball [his son] had coaches and leagues, but he was the one providing private instruction in the backyard. However, when it came to spiritual matters, he passed the buck." (pp 35-36)

The scary thing about that illustration is that its so true! I don't think there's a more universal picture of committed fatherhood than the dad who takes time to teach and play sports with his son... Thomas and his dad were probably very close! But how much more important is it for a dad to teach his son about Christ and spend time with him reading the Bible and in prayer? We all equate the former with good fatherhood. Why is it that we don't think about the latter even more so?

Baucham is not arguing against sports or youth ministries. He's arguing for parents investing in their children's walk with God, personally - not just leaving it to others. Please do play ball (and engage in other equivalents) with your kids! But please prioritize what is most important - teaching them about Christ and how to walk with Him...

Let me ask you:

Have you showed your kids how to study and correctly understand the Bible for themselves?

Do you pray with them often and direct them towards praying for things of eternal significance?

Do you help your kids discern the worldview being communicated in TV shows, movies, music, and newspapers or magazines?

Have you taught your kids how to share the gospel? Have you taught them how to answer common objections to the Christian faith?

Have you taken opportunities to serve in the church or serve people with your children?

Have you taught your kids how to honor God with their finances - how to give to Him and be generous to others?

Do you take opportunities to point your kids towards awe and thankfulness towards God? (By pausing and reflecting on the wonder of music and our sense of hearing, or the flavor of a steak and the gift of tastebuds, or the beauty of the stars and the sheer immensity of the universe God created, or God's incredible creativity and design as seen in a spider being able to spin a web that will catch its food...)

Have you modeled a genuine commitment to Christ: to Christ-centered fellowship, to ministry and service, to hospitality, to faithful church attendance, to your own spiritual growth, to evangelism, etc

Even if your children go to a great Christian school and are involved in everything for their age group at a solid church, your personal investment in these areas must be of priority. Don't just have others do it! Take every opportunity afforded you to personally teach your children about God and what it means to walk with Him. As Deuteronomy 6:4-7 says:

"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up."

For an excellent example of this, listen to this sermon by CJ Mahaney.

God bless you as you faithfully raise your children in the wisdom and instruction of the Lord.

Many thanks to Mrs Slocombe Regrets for awarding me this prize - I am not worthy! Had Peter not already got two statuettes in the bag I would have nominated this blog which not only chooses the same wordpress theme but whose tastes seem to uncannily mirror my own - it's good to have a virtual soul mate.

Under the terms of the award I have to:
1. link the person who tagged you (see above) and publicise the Arte Y Pico blog to show the origin of this honor. (done)
2. tag 5 other bloggers by linking them(done)

Some winners have also added a list 5 unspectacular things about themselves which I have complied with.

The selection of other blogs are supposed to be based on creativity, design and/or interesting material - things which contribute to the blogger community, no matter what language.

Personally speaking content always counts more than flashy visuals although I concede that if a blog looks messy it can be off-putting. Here's my list:

Eleventhvolume Colin is a friend of a friend. A Kraftwerk addict who writes about music and culture - everything from commercial pop to Norwegian jazz . A handsome

Easybakeoven Susan is fifty-something with great music taste (check out her Last.fm profile) and classes among her healing roles those of lightbearer and fabric manipulator.

Simon & Erin's: Dios,el sexo y los tirantes (my nephew + partner) documents their world tour with brilliant photos. The shots of their impossibly good looking friends always makes me feel my age!

NoiseNoiseNoise : Dave is lawyer from Brisbane, Australia and a self confessed rock snob whose intake of noise is truly impressive. I'd be happy to have him as my legal rep!

ollapodrida.net is a strange and mystical space that I find fascinating although I confess to understanding about 25% of the references. The site is linked to the 'women take back the noise' project which I blogged about way back in June 2007 . The splendidly named Nina Pixie 's response to my post was on the first I'd received. I nominate her for the award to return the favour.

Here are five unspectacular things about me:

[gallery]

1. I eat half a grapefruit for breakfast every day and claim that this is the reason I never catch cold (touch wood!)

2. The first single I ever bought was the theme tune to Thunderbirds. I found it again three years ago in my elder brother's record box - a took a Donovan EP by way of compensation for the lost years.

3. The first woman I had a crush on was Alexandra Bastedo whom played Sharron Macready of Nemesis in The Champions. . Check out those cheekbones. She was an action woman but never let this interfere with her immaculate hairstyle. I even sent away for an autographed photo such was my devotion. Maybe Morrissey was similarly smitten because the Smiths singles compilation 'Rank' has her as the cover star.

4. I hate DIY. I can change a lightbulb but that's where I draw the line. I still have nightmares over the fact that my wife started labour pains while we were shopping in Homebase!

5. I've never been to the USA. - all being well I'll be there next year and after years of anticipation I hope it won't be an anti-climax.

Last night’s Monday Night Football game had some issues. The problems began before the game

Last night’s Monday Night Football game had some issues. The problems began before the game even started with Kat Deluna’s atrocious rendition of the National Anthem. This will go down in history as one of the worst in a long line of terrible renditions of this song. It was a terrible version filled with growling and runs all over the place. It was off-key and badly sung in general. At least she was all into herself instead of the lyrics. They could have found someone better at the American Idol tryouts. Thanks to Dallas fans for appropriately booing her sorry ass.

Being on ESPN, we had to put up with the idiot, Tony Kornheiser. Now that Bryant Gumble is gone, he is, bar none, the worst sports commentator on television. Last night, as I was frantically and unsuccessfully trying to get “The Ticket” (the Cowboys’ flagship station) to tune in on my radio, I came to the horrible realization that I would rather listen to Brent Musberger. I never thought I would say that, but sadly it is true.

It is apparent that whatever the ESPN commentators are talking about is much more important than anything else that must be going on, especially the game itself. At one point Stuart Scott was making some general point about DeSean Jackson after a play where he obviously got hurt. Since the injury did not do anything to bolster his argument, I guess Scott felt that the injury was not worth mentioning. Also, it is evident that ESPN is not concerned with providing their audience with a replay even if there is a questionable component to a play. Thank goodness the refs finally got one right when they reversed the claim that a ball had been tipped (by a phantom, I guess) late in the game. It was obvious that the ESPN crew was not even watching the game at that point, and it took the refs to point out the play to them. Thank goodness for Tivo/DVR. With it, I am able to rewind and review pertinent events of the game on my own, and then fast forward past all of the “blah, blah, blah. There has to be someone better than this crew out there. Please find them.

This all being said, the viewers of the game were treated to one of the best Monday Night Football games in history. What an enjoyable shootout it was. I make no secret of the fact that I am from the Dallas area, and am a lifelong Dallas fan, and as a result, an Eagles (and Redskins) hater. This made the game all the better for me. The rest of the league is lucky that the Cowboys, Eagles and Giants have to play six games against each other this season. Overall, it was a great game, but it was not perfect on either side of the ball or with the striped shirts.

On this point, I want to say first that I do not consider myself to be a bad fan, one that always complains and finds fault in a game. There are those guys who would pick apart a victory if their team won 50-0. I am not like that, but that does not mean that I am blinded by victory either.

One thing that I believe is very hard for players to overcome is a tendency to make bad in-game decisions. There are those players who perform well, but in certain situations fall apart or make catastrophic mistake. Usually, this is occurs under pressure.

Monday night’s game had more than its fair share of these moments. Some times a play simply underscores the fact that a player is a knucklehead in general. Cowboy fans can thank DeSean Jackson for replacing Leon Lett as the player who made the most boneheaded decision in league history. Get ready Eagles fans, I’m sure you will have years to enjoy the antics of this idiot if he can survive the Philadelphia media. There is a great quote from Bull Durham that applies well to this discussion. Crash Davis says, “Come on, 'rook, show us that million-dollar arm. 'Cause I got; oh yeah, I got a good idea about that five-cent head of yours.”

Jackson’s folly overshadowed two other brain-dead plays that had a much greater impact on the game. Late in the game, Donovan McNabb did his best Lucy Van Pelt impersonation when he stuck the ball out for Brian Westbrook, drew is back, and then stuck it back out again just in time to cause a game-changing fumble. There is really no good explanation for this play, but he was just matching a equally bad decision made by Romo earlier in the game.

In that instance, Romo went to pitch the ball back to Marion Barber III, and had it slip out of his hands in his own end zone. Romo, instead of kicking the ball out of the end zone for a safety, the appropriate play at the time, picked it up. This allowed him the opportunity to perform a Romo-like play and simply throw the ball away, as he was outside of the pocket when he got to it. Instead, however, he picked up the ball, and looked for a moment as if he thought he were Barry Sanders, and was going to run it out of the end zone from eight yards deep himself. Unfortunately, when he looked up there were four Eagles there ready to fustigate him. Again, instead of making the good decision, and taking the safety, he decided to try to throw the ball away too late, and handed the Eagles a touchdown.

Look, I like Romo, and think he is one of the most talented quarterbacks in the game of football today. The problem is that I am beginning to worry about his ‘five cent head.’ Tony has shown a propensity for the bonehead play in his career so far, be it the faulty hold against Seattle, untimely interceptions or his highlight play when he scrambled all over the field for a first down (it was still a bad football decision, though it was very entertaining to watch.). Many people have compared his ‘gunslinger’ mentality to Brett Favre (I hate these nauseous comparisons.). We are told that ‘when you have a guy like this, you have to take the bad with the good.’ I don’t get this argument. I just want the good. I want a player’s great talent and ability to be bolstered by him smart in-game decisions. That is what wins championships. I’m starting to be afraid that when the chips are on the line, in a must-win game, that his ‘gunslinger’ mentality will result in Cowboy fans being shot through the heart. I truly hope I am wrong.

I know many Christians are very leary of hip-hop culture and hip-hop music, and I understand many of the reasons why. Much rap and hip-hop is packed full of sin-exalting content, and the culture seems to be dominated by the same idols exalted in the music. The truth however, is that every culture has aspects that must be rejected, some that can be tweaked and "redeemed", others that are neutral, and still others that are good. As with any other culture, Christ can be exalted in hip-hop culture.

There is an important principle I learned about in my missions classes at college - one of taking biblical truth into a culture, and allowing it to transform that culture and be expressed within it, rather than imposing one culture upon another. We all apply this on some level - it's why we're okay with men wearing something other than robes and sandals (like Jesus wore), and why we don't recline around a table every time we enjoy the Lord's Supper together (as Jesus and His disciples did). We understand that these externals are not inseperably tied up with the core of the gospel.

What does a Christ-saturated believer in hip-hop culture look like? And what does he rap about? I encourage you to watch this interview with Trip Lee, a young Christian hip-hop artist:

I bet that title got your attention! : )

My goal in this post is actually not to discuss which way you should vote... My goal is merely to point out that there are committed Christians who do prefer to vote Democratic, and to point out some of their reasoning...

Its very easy to assume that every committed Christian would think and live as we do, or that every issue is black and white, and I think it's helpful to realize that that's not always the case. In areas where Scripture is not explicit, we must do our best to arrive at biblical convictions and live accordingly, but we must be careful to allow other Christians to do the same, even if they arrive at convictions different to ours. That doesn't mean we shouldn't discuss things like parenting and schooling choices, media choices, views on drinking alcohol, tattoos, and of course -politics, it just means we should be careful how we do so. Dialogue on these issues is fitting if it is done graciously, without insisting on anything "beyond what is written", and can be very beneficial and sharpening.

The abortion issue is a big one for Christians, and one that often seals the Christian's decision to vote Republican. However, in my experience, Christians who vote Democratic still feel very strongly about abortion being wrong, they just think that voting Republican won't stop it. Some think that banning abortion will never happen, and that tackling societal problems is more likely to make an impact on how many abortions take place (see the video below). For this reason, the abortion issue is not what drives their vote.

I have found that committed Christians who vote Democratic do so primarily because of concern for the poor. This concern is biblical and should characterize every Christian (James 1:27, Proverbs 14:31, Ephesians 4:28). Other Christians with a heart for the poor vote Republican despite the Democratic party line. Many of them believe that caring for the poor is not the role of government, and that God's plan is for the poor to be helped through individuals and churches.

With both these issues then, the question for the Christian is not one of whether or not these issues should be dear to our hearts, but rather one of how we should be striving to see these things accomplished...

Don't throw rocks at Christian Democrats! Know that there are many who are genuine believers who love Jesus and are seeking to honor Him in every aspect of their lives, including their political views. Engage them in discussion and hear why they choose to vote as they do. Seek to challenge each other's thinking as you both wrestle through what is most God-honoring...

Just some food for thought.

I'll let a Christian Democrat speak for himself: Donald Miller, author of the Christian bestseller, Blue Like Jazz, prayed to close the Democratic National Convention this year (see his prayer here). In an inteview with Christianity Today just before the convention, Miller explains his reasoning for supporting the Democrats in this election:

Movies
Last night I watched two movies: Honeydripper and Shotgun Stories. The former was a more refined movie made for the mainstream and the other was definitely lower budget but still good. The acting looked like acting in both films especially in the Shotgun Stories.

Headache
I've had a headache all night. I think it was from drinking that beer. It supposedly has a lot of hops which can mean more yeasts which can mean more headaches. I watched the movies with the headache, slept with it and woke up with it. Around seven this morning, I took a couple Tylenol so now it's starting to take effect.

Digital cameras
After dinner on Sunday night, I came home and researched point and shoot digital cameras. This iPhone's camera is okay for web stuff but it's hardly worth archiving the photos. I still can't afford the full frame sensored SLR's so a compact digital would be a good start. They're easy to carry around and they take pretty good photos. On Monday morning, I got an email from Donovan that he just got a digital camera from Costco. It wasn't the camera that I was eyeing, the Panasonic DMC-TZ5, but it was a compact digital. He sent me a link with some photos.

This image has a grey tint to it. I don't know why that is.

This image is well exposed in a tough lighting situation. I assume because Joanna's squinting in this one and the others in the series that it must be pretty bright out there. It handled the foreground and background pretty well. Yeah, Lena is a bit underexposed but for a point and shoot, this is pretty good. A fill flash would have helped.

Here's one where the camera was confused. The mix of indoor and outdoor lighting wreaked havoc on the camera's brain. The greenish hue suggests to me that there must have been fluorescent lighting and the yellow probably from some incandescents as well. White balance correction in these situations is best handled with a standard grey card but carrying one around is a pain.

These are Donovan's pictures. I've posted them here without his permission, not to mention Lena's and Joanna's.

The best quarterbacks always seem to fit a certain mold. They aren’t the most athletic, or the strongest out there, but they know how to play. The quarterback position is dominated by ‘white’ players, while more traditionally athletic positions are dominated by ‘black’ players. These other positions require less know how, and more pure talent. All of the best players at almost every position except QB, OL, K, and P, are down the line ‘black.’ But ‘black’ players often struggle at the quarterback position in the NFL. Most of the ‘black’ quarterbacks try to force athleticism to be more important at this position than know-how. The list is failed, or failing, athletic ‘black’ quarterbacks is mounting. The number one case is Michael Vick, who in my opinion, couldn’t throw a lick compared to the other starting quarterbacks in the league. Being able to run so well is good, but in the NFL at the QB position the ability to perform in the pocket will always be more important unless there are drastic rule changes. The best ‘black’ quarterback I have seen, by far, is Donovan McNabb. When he first came into the league he was the stereotypical running ‘black’ quarterback, but he learned and developed into a very good QB. When speaking about the best all-time black QB, Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham, and Doug Williams must be put into the equation. Of these, and of all ‘black’ quarterbacks, only Doug Williams has a Super Bowl ring as a starter. He wasn’t the most talented quarterback, but he played the position well. There are today a number of ‘black’ quarterbacks who have an opportunity to break the mold: JaMarcus Russell, David Garrard, Vince Young and Tavaris Jackson among others. But they have to learn not to rely on athleticism, and to use their skill as a passer, manager of the game, and leader.
