COMMENT J'AI VALSÉ AVEC BASHIR

Etonnant parfois comme la vie est faite de drôles de coïncidences...
Samedi j'allais au cinéma (enfin !) voir la Valse avec Bashir. [Si tu hésitais pour aller le voir, je te confie que tu n'as pas trop à t'en faire et que tu ferais bien d'y aller, tant qu'il est encore à l'affiche. VOstfr ou pas - il faut parfois serrer les dents.]

Il se trouve qu'en plus d'être très bon, ce docu-fiction d'animation m'a fait un petit cadeau au sortir de la projection.
Quel est-il ? Et bien, le voici :

Petite mise au point. Déjà, tu dois savoir que moi et la musique des années 1980, on ne fait qu'un (mais pas trop souvent sinon on ne savoure pas bien).
Ta réflexion tu te la gardes donc pour toi.
Moi, cette chanson, je l'aime beaucoup. Et encore plus depuis hier, va savoir.
(Oh et puis ça garde toujours une sorte de charme désuet de regarder ce genre de clips...)

Tu dois donc savoir que cette chanson porte le petit nom d'Enola Gay et qu'elle était, en son temps, interprétée par Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD pour les intimes).
Ce que tu ne sais peut-être pas, c'est la signification profonde de ce titre.
Enola Gay.
Pour toi ça ressemble à une sorte de Granola. Et gay de surcroît. Un granola gay... c'est très 80's non ?
Comment ça je te prends pour un(e) con(ne) ! Mais je n'oserais pas !

Bon, donc, cette chanson intervient dans le film. A un moment bien particulier (que je ne te conterai pas, reste calme). Un peu comme un cheveu dans la soupe. Mais non sans importance.
Et puis d'ailleurs, j'ai adoré la BO de ce film. Dans son intégralité.

Enfin bref. Avec ton Granola gay là, tu n'y es pas du tout.
Enola gay, c'est le nom de l'avion qui a largué la première Bombe A sur Hiroshima. [Je te la fais en version courte mais si tu veux plus de détail, je t'en prie, clique sur le lien !]

Cette chanson me hante depuis hier. Et "comme de par hasard", comme dirait l'autre, voici que je l'entendais ce soir sur mon autoradio alors que j'étais sur le chemin de la maison...
C'en était trop ! "C'est un signe !" me suis-je dit !
Là où certains voient la Dame-Blanche (je heu... s'il-te-plaît Madamoiselle, c'est très bien comme c'était), moi j'entends Enola Gay (et je préfère que les choses en restent là, merci d'avance, c'est très bien ainsi).

C'est à peu près tout ce que j'avais à dire. [Et c'est mon dernier mot Jean-Pierre. A moins que... Attends..., oui, voilà ! :]

La Valse avec Bashir a été une très belle découverte. Je ne sais pas pourquoi j'ai mis tant de temps à m'y déplacer... Je sais simplement que c'est une très belle oeuvre. Sensible. Au graphisme fort.
Une lente immersion dans les souvenirs enfouis d'une mémoire fragmentaire.
Jusqu'a la délivrance, déchirante.
Tout en finesse, les images parlent d'elles-mêmes et submergent.
C'est en courant que je suis sortie de la salle, cherchant une lumière et un air qui semblaient manquer au fond de moi-même.
Mais toute expérience restant strictement propre à chacun, je ne peux rien vous promettre...

Of course, the Americans declared that Hiroshima was an army camp and not a city with peacefull citizens.

La destrucción total. La decadencia de una civilización que como dice Voltaire, no suprimió la barbarie; la perfeccionó e hizo más cruel y bárbara.
Imagínate caminando por Hiroshima un día después de la fatídica explosión. Cuerpos calcinados, tufillo a chamusquina, sabor a plomo en el aire, ruinas en un ángulo de 360 grados. No puedes asimilarlo, no alcanzas a comprender el poder que esconden algunos pocos puños cerrados, te muerdes el labio impotente y en silencio. Pisas hierros ennegrecidos que aún se quejan y prefieres no detenerte sobre esos escombros descompuestos de quién sabe qué. Reconoces vestigios de una ciudad que tardará en ver el sol. No muy allá, todavía quedan pequeñas fogatas sin apagar que escapan del tono gris que lo envuelve todo. Y escuchas débiles súplicas a lo lejos que desgarran el silencio fúnebre.
El 6 de agosto de 1945, el Enola Gay, un B-29 estadounidense, dejó caer a “Little Boy”. Cumplían órdenes. A las 8:15:17 se escuchó un ruido sibilante que sólo fue el preludio de una gran tragedia como nunca antes se había visto…

Estados Unidos había lanzado la bomba atómica. Hirohito no se rendía y no se les ocurrió una idea mejor. Panda de cabrones. Mientras el ejército japonés trataba de ocultar el bombardeo a sus ciudadanos, el presidente Harry Truman se dirigió a su población a través de la televisión:
“Hace poco tiempo un avión norteamericano ha lanzado una bomba sobre Hiroshima inutilizándola para el enemigo. Los japoneses comenzaron la guerra por el aire en Pearl Harbor, han sido correspondidos sobradamente. Pero este no es el final, con esta bomba hemos añadido una dimensión nueva y revolucionaria a la destrucción […] Si no aceptan nuestras condiciones pueden esperar una lluvia de fuego que sembrará más ruinas que todas las hasta ahora vistas sobre la tierra.”
Se le olvidó comentar que en Pearl Harbour murieron militares y aquí civiles. No necesitas la imaginación de Lewis Carrol. Tienes delante la fotografía de Yamahata. Impactante. El único superviviente que quedó en pie fue la Cúpula de Hiroshima. La Cúpula Genbaku. También conocida como la Cúpula de la Bomba Atómica.

El edificio fue diseñado por el arquitecto checo Jan Letzel y se completó en abril de 1915. Era un edificio para mostrar exposiciones. Y acabó expuesto. La bomba nuclear cayó casi encima de él (el hipocentro estuvo a 150 metros de distancia) y fue la estructura más cercana a la explosión. El edificio se ha conservado en el mismo estado desde aquel día, y ahora sirve de recordatorio de la devastación nuclear. Como símbolo de esperanza y paz. Un emblema que debería bastar para que un puñado de dedos poderosos decidan eliminar las bombas nucleares. Es Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Y el distintivo del Parque Memorial de la Paz de Hiroshima, que ocupa un gran espacio en el centro de la ciudad. Un centro de Hiroshima que aquella mañana quedó invisible. Oculto. Sólo podía verse el puerto de Aioi.
-"Una columna de humo asciende rápidamente. Su centro muestra un terrible color rojo. Todo es pura turbulencia. Los incendios se extienden por todas partes como llamas que surgiesen de un enorme lecho de brasas. Comienzo a contar los incendios. Uno, dos, tres, cuatro, cinco, seis... catorce, quince... es imposible. Son demasiados para poder contarlos. Aquí llega la forma de hongo de la que nos había hablado el capitán Parsons. Viene hacia aquí, es como una masa de melaza burbujeante. El hongo se extiende. Puede que tenga mil quinientos o quizá tres mil metros de altura y unos ochocientos de anchura. Crece más y más. Está casi a nuestro nivel y sigue ascendiendo. Es muy negro, pero muestra cierto tinte violáceo muy extraño. La base del hongo se parece a una densa niebla atravesada con un lanzallamas. La ciudad debe estar abajo de todo eso. Las llamas y el humo se están hinchando y se arremolinan alrededor de las estribaciones. Las colinas están desapareciendo bajo el humo. Todo cuanto veo ahora de la ciudad es el muelle principal y lo que parece ser un campo de aviación. Eso aún resulta visible. Allá bajo hay aviones".'

La primera bomba atómica de la historia acabó con la vida de 120.000 personas de una población de 450.000 habitantes, causando otros 70.000 heridos y destruyendo la ciudad casi en su totalidad. En sólo unos pocos segundos, la onda expansiva, el calor de varios miles de grados, y la radiación, producto de la explosión, destruyeron todo lo que encontraban a su paso cercano al punto de impacto
La bomba atómica es un dispositivo que obtiene una enorme energía de las reacciones nucleares. Su funcionamiento se basa en provocar una reacción nuclear en cadena no controlada. Se encuentra entre las denominadas armas de destrucción masiva y su explosión produce una característica nube en forma de hongo.
Al no haber una rendición inmediata del Imperio Japonés, tres días después, una segunda bomba explotó 500 metros por encima del suelo que pisaban los ciudadanos de Nagasaki. Allí, el número de víctimas causadas directamente por la explosión se estima en 50.000 mortales y 30.000 heridos de una población de 195.000 habitantes. A estas víctimas hay que sumar las causadas por los efectos de la radiación nuclear. De una población de 645.000 habitantes, el número de víctimas pudo sobrepasar las 400.000 ó 500.000. De ellas, 200.000 ó 250.000 mortales (los datos difieren según diversas fuentes).

El fotógrafo fue Yosuke Yamahata. El gobierno japonés le envió al día siguiente del ataque para que documentara los efectos de la nueva bomba americana para su estudio por el alto mando nipón. The plane that helped to end WWII

The Boeing B-29 Superfortress. With it's pressurized cabin, remote controlled machine gun turrets on the top as well as the bottom of the aircraft and a revolutionary fire control system. With it's four Wright Cyclone R-3350 engines running at full power with a maximum takeoff weight of 133,500 pounds the Boeing B-29 Superfortress could deliver time and again a multitude of bombs exactly where they needed to be in order to aid in the war effort.

Not only was it used in the U.S. firebombing raids against Japan, it also carried the two atomic bombs that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki, as well as other duties in the Korean war effort. Even after it's wartime use a few B-29's were employed as flying television transmitters for a prototype of television broadcasting called StratoVision where B-29's that had been fitted with transmitters and receivers for television would fly in specific areas of the United States and when 14 aircraft were operating in a daisy chain effect up to approximately 78% of the country could receive the same broadcast signal. This process was later scrapped in light of advances in fiber optic, cable systems, and direct stattelite systems. By the time it was retired there had been more than 3,900 B-29 Superfortresses built.

Of course for all of the good things that the B-29 had going for it also had problems as well, the biggest of which was the engine. Though it had an impressive power to weight ratio the Wright Cyclone engine used on the B-29 had many issues which were all compounded by the fact that the aircraft was in high demand through the end of World War II. Some of the things that caused bad engines in the B-29 included close engine cowlings which provided inadequate cooling and cowling flaps that caused vibration and flutter in all flight conditions and positions. Another big problem was that the 18 cylinders were arranged compactly in front and rear rows which caused a lot of cases where the top cylinders on the back row were prone to overheating and failure in as little as 25 flight hours. Another notable design flaw was an accessory housing in the back of the engine block that was made out of a magnesium alloy which when heated to extreme temperatures was prone to catching on fire and creating a heat so intense it could burn through the firewall to the main wing spar in as little as 90 seconds causing serious consequences. Interim measures to help with these issues included cuffs that were placed on the prop blades to divert more cool air into the intakes.

I know there is a lot more advantages and disadvantages as well as history of the B-29 Superfortress, especially when you get into its combat history where you have most notably both the Enola Gay as well as Bocks Car whom both dropped Atom bombs from the Manhatten project on target cities in Japan to ultimately aid in the ending of world war II, but this is where I choose to end this writing. Expect additional posts extolling different historical or mechanical wonders of the B-29 as it is my favorite aircraft.

Hiroshima's Consecrated Legends

The recent death (Nov. 1, 2007) of Brig. Gen. Paul Tibbets, pilot of the Enola Gay, who dropped the first atomic bomb on Hiroshima has prompted another round of comments on American decisions near the end of World War II. Despite the passage of 62 years, heated opinions are repeated as fact and myths become immortalized as truths. Beyond distorting the historical record, wishful thinking about it leads us to repeat past mistakes in new ways against new enemies.

Among the inaccuracies are these:
1) Japan was ready to fight to the end.
Facts: In an intercepted cable of July 12, 1945, Emperor Hirohito revealed his decision to intervene to end the war. In Truman’s journal he characterized the message as “telegram from Jap Emperor asking for peace.” Tokyo was prepared to surrender unconditionally if the monarchy would be retained, the very position the Allies accepted after Hiroshima.
Five days later Truman predicted that Stalin would “be in the Jap war by August 15. Fini Japs when that comes about.” Nevertheless, he ordered the bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6. The U.S.S.R. entered the war on Aug. 8. Truman ordered the bombing of Nagasaki anyway.

2) Dropping the bomb was necessary to prevent an American invasion.
Facts: In 1946, a U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey report based on intelligence available to the White House concluded: “certainly prior to Dec. 31, 1945 and in all probability prior to Nov. 1, 1945, Japan would have surrendered even if the atomic bombs had not been dropped, even if Russian had not entered the war, and even if no invasion had been planned or contemplated.

3) Dropping the bomb saved lives.
Facts: Stanford historian Barton Bernstein’s study of declassified documents found that the worst-case scenario by military planners was 46,000 deaths if the U.S. invaded both Kyushu and Honshu islands. Since Hiroshima, these estimates have grown exponentially as if to justify using the bomb. In notes, Truman cites 250,000 casualties (dead, wounded, missing). His published memoir raises the number to 500,000 dead. Still later, he referred to saving a million lives. In 1991, President H.W. Bush claimed that the bomb saved “millions.” Since both presidents, among countless others, ignored the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey conclusion that an invasion was unnecessary, it is no wonder average Americans do the same. All of these morbid calculations ignore the stark fact that more than 187,000 humans died at Hiroshima.

4) At the time, military and civilian leaders agreed the bomb was necessary.
Facts: Supreme Allied Commander Dwight D. Eisenhower told Secretary of War Stimson, “Japan was already defeated and that dropping the bomb was completely unnecessary.” Fleet Admiral William Leahy, Chief of Staff to Presidents Roosevelt and Truman, wrote in his memoirs, “the use of this barbarous weapon at Hiroshima and Nagasaki was of no material assistance in our war against Japan. The Japanese were already defeated and ready to surrender.” Among the few civilians who knew about the bomb, 155 Manhattan Project scientists signed petitions raising moral concerns about bombing Japanese cities. The report issued by Nobel physicist James Franck in June 1945 recommended a demonstration bombing on a deserted island and also anticipated creating a dangerous arms race.

5) Japanese citizens were warned in advance.
Fact: They were not.

Americans properly disparage countries that manipulate their own histories, whether it is Stalinist revisionism or Japanese amnesia about the forced prostitution of “comfort women.” Yet, powerful belief in American ideals and in the nobility of our motives, leads us to do the same. The result, as with Hiroshima, is a chasm between public perception and historical truth, between ideals and reality.

If we had not used the bomb to end a war that was already won, we might not have had to negotiate with one “evil empire” (N. Korea) to stop developing nuclear weapons, or be anxious that another “evil empire” (Iran) is secretly developing them, while all the while supporting an unstable ally (Pakistan) that possesses them already.

We taught you greasy bastards how to get that oil out of the ground, now you ungrateful pricks have the price up to $100 per barrel (I realize its more complex than that but work with me here) I say we either let the military do their jobs the way they know how (instead of some poindexter politician with little girl hands and a sweater vest calling the shots) or we fire up the baddest F#$*^%$ aircraft that ever flew and get back to business. A vision of a mushroom cloud - prophetic warning of nuclear war

I was meditating on the Psalms last night on how God hears the righteous when they pray and what that means, when suddenly, inexplicably, and very clearly, I saw a vision of a huge mushroom cloud from a nuclear explosion and was reminded of what I'd noted earlier from my Bible study. God was warning me about impending nuclear war.

Kings, presidents and nations be warned, nuclear attack is not now something that you can cross your fingers and hope you can escape from. Do not be complacent because nuclear bombs have not been publically used since 1945 (I do not count cruise missiles with small warheads). The world held its breath in the 1950s and 1960s at the height of the cold war during first Suez, and then the Cuban missile crisis, most folk fearing nuclear world war was just around the corner. My mother told me how at that time she and her nursing colleagues were glued to the radio listening to the BBC news in the major London teaching hospital where they worked. These tough and resilient Londoners had been through the Blitz, but now Hitler and his doodlebugs paled into insignificance and World War 2 seemed like kindergarten with the terrifying prospect of nuclear war looming. My mother and her colleagues had been shown a no-holds-barred film footage from Hiroshama featuring real victims and their terrible burns and other radiation injuries to prepare them for the nuclear casualties they may need to nurse. The pictures were detailed, harrowing and grisly - intentionally so - that the medical staff may be prepared for the worst. My mother can still remember these shocking film images, and that is despite the many years gone by since and her old age with its fuddled and mixed up memories. The whole hospital staff then - even the atheists - prayed desparately that God would spare them and the world from nuclear disaster. Hiroshama and Nagasaki had been less than fifteen years before, so it was not unrealistic to expect that these weapons of mass destruction would be used again. But it did not happen then, thank God, the world was let off the hook twice, and over the years of 'peace' since then many in the Western World have got complacent or proud and stopped fearing nuclear war. But when people cry peace and safety...'When they shall say, Peace and safety, then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.' (I Thessalonians 5:3-4)

Kings, presidents and nations be warned, nuclear threat is not just a 'threat' any more - it is a reality. It is not a nightmare you can wake up from, or just the stuff of Hollywood blockbusters. It is a reality that is inevitable in your lifetime - and soon! Diplomacy, weapons, money, cunning plans or military might or George W Bush cannot save you in that day - only the Lord God can. Fear God, or fear your enemy, for great is his anger against you.

'Therefore, you kings, be wise;
be warned, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the LORD with fear
and rejoice with trembling.

Kiss the Son, lest he be angry
       and you be destroyed in your way,
       for his wrath can flare up in a moment.
       Blessed are all who take refuge in him. (Psalm 2:10-12)

Great troubles are coming to the world - to multiple nations, not just America and the UK. What we have seen to date (the floods, the fires, the earthquakes and other natural disasters) are but the Earth's birthpangs leading up to the End of Times - much worse is yet to come unless the nations, their kings and leaders repent and 'kiss the Son'. For God's wrath is about to be poured out on mankind for: 'once more He will shake the heavens and the earth.' The nations will writhe and roll like a storm-tossed sea, clutching their bellies like a woman in labour, as trouble after trouble hits them from side to side. I see a distorted figure like the image from Munch's 'The Scream' painting, except this figure is whiter and paler (as he is more afraid) and he is more skeletal thin as he is hungry and raging with thirst. Such will be man in that day, as there will be famine in a dry and parched land. They will pant out like rabid dogs except they will want to keep their saliva, so parched will their mouths be, and their tongues will stick to the roofs of their mouths in fear.

"There will be signs in the sun, moon and stars. On the earth, nations will be in anguish and perplexity at the roaring and tossing of the sea. Men will faint from terror, apprehensive of what is coming on the world, for the heavenly bodies will be shaken. At that time they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. When these things begin to take place, stand up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near." (Luke 21:25-28)

God's wrath is ready to be poured out on mankind, the vial is broken and it is in His hand ready to pour out. Will you nations call out to Him instead and be saved from this disaster?

'If I have done evil to him who is at peace with me
       or without cause have robbed my foe-
then let my enemy pursue and overtake me;
       let him trample my life to the ground
       and make me sleep in the dust...   (Psalm 7:4-5)

Nations have acted unrighteously to other nations, man against man, brother against brother. Without just cause nations have robbed and done evil. Because of this, as I have previously warned, God will allow the USA's enemy (Islamic people) to pursue and overtake America, to trample the proud nation to the ground - but not completely, the US will be smote and struck but she shall still smoulder.

If he (man) does not relent,
       he (God) will sharpen his sword;
       he will bend and string his bow.
He has prepared his deadly weapons;
       he makes ready his flaming arrows.. (Psalm 7: 12-13)

Your enemy has been drilling for war. God has warned you of it repeatedly - will you but repent? The deadly weapons, the flaming weapons are ready to strike, will you relent. O America, or will you proudly go down to the dust?

The nations have fallen into the pit they have dug;
their feet are caught in the net they have hidden... (Psalm 9:15)

By their own weapons will they be destroyed, by their own snare they shall entangle themselves!

Strike them with terror, O LORD;
let the nations know they are but men. (Psalm 9:20)
