Tonight was opening night of the Union County New Jersey Music Fest in Cranford, NJ. It was a nice night for an outdoor event. I mostly photographed the musicians more than the crowd shots. I posted two of them in the Star Ledger online news. One was a straight shot of lead guitarist Johnny Hickman of Cracker done with a zoom lens. I managed to get the head of keyboardist Kenny Margolis in it also.

The second shot was done with my Lensbaby, which I think turned out to be very appropriate for the What Cheer Brigade. If you've never seen them, they are a very entertaining marching band from Providence, Rhode Island. They get dressed up in funky things (mostly in black), have tats all over, wild hairdos, and play some great music. They start by marching around to get the crowd's attention, then they stop somewhere and play a few songs circling around in the same spot and encouraging the audience to get in close and dance. I thought they were fun.

I also thought it would be fun to shoot with my Lensbaby for some reason tonight. I think the first three performers I shot had on blue jeans and a black t-shirt and didn't move much, so I felt the need to get a little creative. As luck would have it, I ran into the What Cheer Brigade shortly after putting the Lensbaby on.

If it works, the links below should take you to see the two photos I posted. If you send me money, I'll show you the rest. In other words, you won't see them. Maybe I'll do something with them some day, we'll see. Besides these two, I also shot Jenny Owen Youngs, Pat Dinizio (of the Smithereens), and Everclear. And by the way, I do not give my best shots to the paper. I keep the best ones.

as all of us alcoholics know, there are many different types of alcohol to get us inebriated. my weapon of choice is beer, mainly coors light. but we all know theres theres liquors like whisky, vodka, and scotch, etc. well the weapon of choice for certain inarticulate people is Everclear. everclear is a brand of grain alcohol which is 95% alcohol or 190 proof. the highest that is allowed to be sold in the U.S. is 191 proof. everclear is manufactured by the Luxco company, formally known as the David Sherman Company. 190 proof liquor is prohibited in certain states, but i guess not maryland, ; ) everclear has been in the media and culture for a while now if you search there a few you can find where everclear was used or referenced. now as to the effects of everclear you can consult the owner of this webpage, (duhhhhhh.wordpress.com/ ) and ask her. she is an expert on the effects and results of everclear. i am sure that she will have no problems answering any and all questions asked about it. ahahahahahhahahahahhaahahahahahah

Everclear, Soul Asylum, and Cracker
August 20, 2008 Webster Hall NYC

When I got an email that these bands were all playing the same bill, I just HAD to go see them. I mean, three staple bands of 90s alternative rock all in one night! Of course it's been a while since the 90s, but hey, good music defies time and space right?

First up was Cracker, whose fan base seemed to be comprised of bankers, accountants, and other professionals. They've all gotten good jobs since the 90s and were dressed more for an office party then a rock show. Hell, even the lead singer was looking like a PolySci professor. BUT that aside, they were tight and polished. And even if you didn't know a single song they played (no "Eurotrash Girl " was to be heard) they ended with the track that has the staying power to still be heard on KRock today, "Low." To be blunt, it kicked ass live.

Note: Sadly, they did not play my fave "Get Off This" which to this day is still one my favorite videos (I can't believe someone youtubed the premiere on 120 mins, I remember watching it!)

Next up was Soul Asylum...

First off, Dave Pirner, was in rare form this night, and even did a stand-up routine (oh yes, old-fashioned jokes one after another.) For some reason I thought I would be bored for their set, but I was way off. They were actually great! They clearly knew that most of us had a copy of Grave Dancer's Union back in '92, so they played "Without A Trace," "Black Gold," "Somebody to Shove," and hell even "Runaway Train," which surpisingly didn't sound tired! They also did "Misery" which was nice to hear again.

Note: Sadly, they didn't play my fave "Can't Even Tell" off of the Clerks soundtrack, as featured in the official film of NJ, Clerks (such a classic video!)

And then came the headliner, Everclear...

The last time I saw Everclear was in 1996 at the Roseland. I have fond memories of the show, but it had been 12 years for chrissakes! Could they possibly still be into it, and could they possibly drag me back into it. Yes... and yes!!! My favorite Everclear song is "You Make Me Feel Like A Whore," and they opened with it, so they pretty much "had me at hello." ;)

They also did "Heroin Girl," "Strawberry," and "Santa Monica," off of the CD we all had in 1995, Sparkle and Fade. Other songs included "Everything to Everyone," "Father of Mine," "Wonderful," and "AM Radio."

They even did a Rolling Stones cover (pictured below gathered around the mic)

It absolutely warmed my heart to watch Everclear out there giving 100% after all these years. And let me tell ya, for all those that mocked me for going... the place was packed!!! You just couldn't feel bad after watching their performance (hell, I missed my bus cause I just couldn't bring myself to leave early.)

As another birthday sneaks up on me, it was fantastic to see that rockers from our own generation can still defy aging. The bands had so much energy, gratitude for their fans, and were visibly thrilled to still be out there playing! Thanks to all of them for taking the time out to remind us of the good old days, and give us something to take with us tomorrow as well.

xoxo
~Cat

"...Yeah I dream of the day
When I learn how to make you pay
Someday I'll teach you to beg
Someday, someday..."
-Everclear
"You Make Me Feel Like A Whore"

FYI: Jersey folks, Friday September 5th Everclear & Cracker are playing the Union Country Music Fest in Cranford, NJ for FREE!

I've been kind of sleepy and worn out all day today. Not sure if it's the middle of August/dog days thing or if I'm actually have a bit of a cold or something (I did have a headache this morning and just felt blah). Anyhow, just haven't been very motivated.

Did go on my interview, it was okay but I don't really expect to hear back from them. On the bright side did set up 3 more interviews for the next couple of days, 2 tomorrow and 1 on Monday. None of them are teaching jobs, but the first one tomorrow is nearby and I might take it if they make an offer. Have to wait and see how tomorrow goes.

After that, spent a couple hours volunteering today at the church, putting together bulletins. This was the first time I actually did that, although I've wanted to for a while. It was good to get out of the house and I just wanted to give something back to the church because they have been such a positive influence on my life. Will have to admit part of it was selfish in that I was trying for good karma!!! :).

My song for the day is Wonderful by Everclear. At church was talking to my 'best' friend, he knows who it is, and told him a bit more of my upbringing - and this song reminds me so much of how my life turned out. I love the irony of it, and as you get to know me better, you will realize, songs like this actually cheer me up:

Positive thought of the day:

Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.

It seems to me that there's money to be made for some young, enterprising, conservative musician. There aren't really any conservative indie/alternative bands, but there are plenty of conservatives who like that kind of music. Can you imagine how they'd rally around a band who was outwardly conservative. And if Rush Limbaugh told his listeners about that band? They'd be millionaires overnight.

Same, though less so, for a liberal country band. By the nature of the art form, there are more liberal musicians, in general, than conservative. But country still doesn't have too many successful liberal acts (minus the Dixie Chicks, of course). I would imagine there's a similarly good opportunity for a good liberal country band to come out and take that genre by storm.

So? Why hasn't anyone seized on these opportunities?

I started doing a little looking, and I came across an article by John Miller written for National Review. He offered up his top 50 conservative rock songs. Surprisingly, there were quite a few songs by real indie bands on the list. That doesn't mean they were/are conservative bands. But the songs (by virtue of being libertarian, actually) are arguably conservative. Here's his list of top 50 (there are 50 more, if you want to check those out, too).

Eric Kirk at SoHum Parlance saw this article and decided (with some incentive from Miller) to take on the task of finding the top 50 liberal country songs. Here's his list below (follow this link to see the justifications)...

48. Saginaw, Michigan - Lefty Frizzell
49. Copperhead Road - Steve Earle
50. Hobo's Meditation - Dolly Parton

In most of the cases in the rock section, the songs are written by artists who are generally liberal, but have swerved into the conservative side of an issue. The country side largely includes artists who are generally liberal.

Thus, my curiosity still stands: Could a "good" indie/alternative band who was conservative gather a critical mass of fans? I think it goes deeper than that. I think the question really is "do people like songs because of the lyrics, melody, instrumentation, vocals, etc. (obviously, "all of the above" is an option, too)?

Can you love a song which endorses a philosophy to which you are vehemently opposed?

Known for scores of hits, including “Love Shack,” “Rock Lobster,” “Private Idaho” and “Roam,” the band released “Funplex,” its first new studio album in 16 years, in March to universally positive reviews. The band will close out MusicFest ‘08 with a bang.

• Tokyo Police Club, a young indie rock band from Toronto that has been featured on MTV, and critically acclaimed in Spin, Rolling Stone and other leading music publications since the release of their full-length debut, “Elephant Shell,” earlier this year.

• The Gin Blossoms, a power-pop act whose classic 1992 album, “New Miserable Experience” sold 3 million records thanks to several hits, including “Hey Jealousy,” “Found Out About You” and “Allison Road.”

• Rock N’ Roll Hall of Famer Felix Cavaliere’s Rascals. The voice of one of the biggest groups in the country from 1965-69 will perform such beloved hits as “Good Lovin’,” “Groovin’,” “A Girl Like You,” “A Beautiful Morning” and “People Got to Be Free.”

• Dan Zanes, described by People magazine as “the crown prince of contemporary kid’s music.” A Grammy award-winning artist and former member of legendary rock band The Del Fuegos, Zanes and his band are regularly seen and heard on PBS’ “Sesame Street” and Playhouse Disney, and known far and wide for his incredible family-friendly musical performances.

Other attractions will include:

• The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus, a state-of-the-art mobile audio and video recording studio and educational vehicle will deliver a hands-on musical experience for MusicFest ‘08 attendees.

• The Major League Baseball Traveling Road Show, which includes pitching and batting cages and video game kiosks, was a very popular attraction at last year’s event and will return to the MusicFest grounds in 2008.

• As previously announced, the Rock on! Walkathon and 5k Rock N’ Run (on a certified USATF course) will open the festival on Saturday, September 6 (7:30 a.m. registration, 9 a.m. run start, 9:15 a.m. walk start) to benefit the Love Hope Strength Foundation (www.lovehopestrength.org) and The Valerie Fund (www.thevaleriefund.org).

• Saturday includes Kids Kingdom Traveling Jubilee, an entertainment show featuring rides and amusements for children, which will be staged in an expanded area at Shane Walsh Field, which is adjoining Nomahegan Park. Kids Kingdom makes several stops in Union County Parks through the year, concluding with MusicFest.

In the event of rain, MusicFest will be held at Kean University, however the Rock on! Walkathon and 5K Rock N’ Run will be held in Cranford. Additional information is available at ucmusicfest.com.

From the Rockmine Almanac for today (Wednesday 6th August):

Birth

1952. Pat MacDonald (Timbuk 3) born in Green Bay, Wisconsin.

On Tour

1970. The "Popanalia" Festival in Nice, France becomes the second one in a week to be abandoned. It should have lasted 36 hours and featured Derek & The Dominoes, Pink Floyd and Soft Machine as headliners but turned into a riot when fans discovered that Soft Machine were refusing to play after being told they wouldn't get their agreed fee. Only Joan Baez, Country Joe and Rare Bird actually performed before disgruntled fans stormed the stage. As well as throwing a grand piano off the stage, the mob also set fire to two mobile recording studios belonging to the broadcaster RTL.

In Custody

1999. Following an incident at the city's Music Hall on July 31st, misdemeanour assault charges are filed against Art Alexakis and Brian Lehfeldt of Everclear in Austin, Texas. Alexakis stormed off stage during the show after being hit by a plastic water cup. Security guards pulled a 17 year old girl to the front of the stage, claiming she was responsible. On his return, Alexakis is said to have thrown a plastic water bottle at the girl calling her, "a f***ing redneck bitch" while Lehfeldt kicked her.

In Court

1990. Kevin Rowland (Dexy's Midnight Runners) is fined £ 50 and ordered to pay £ 25 costs at Marlborough Magistrates Court after admitting threatening behaviour. He was stopped by police in London's Soho in the early hours of the morning with two others. Rowland and pal David Philips (Earth) had obviously been fighting as both had blood on their faces. Initially police just spoke to the men but shortly after being allowed to go, they started fighting again and were arrested. Another friend, Lawrence Coles was arrested for shouting and swearing.

On Television

1987. Late Night With Letterman (U.S.A.) Musical guest: Patty Smyth - "Isn't It Enough" 4m 52s.

Death

1973. Chicago Blues singer Memphis Minnie dies in a nursing home in Memphis, Tennessee.

Babble

A trip back to the Ballerina Ballroom in Nairn gave me a pleasant surprise. I was taking some memorabilia up to let John Byrne see the sort of stuff I planned to hang and walked in to discover he'd painted one wall with the wording "Rock Dreams". It's reproduced below but he said it would be "Improved on". I can't wait to see how it develops.

Yesterday, I gave a link to the myspace site for the Ballerina Ballroom Cinema Of Dreams but the "official site" can be found here. As I said, I spent a few happy hours trawling through microfiche reels looking for a complete listing of gigs at the Ballerina. I got a couple of years done but one of the things confusing me is that it originally seems to have been in a different venue but I need to check that out. Needless to say, I'll keep you posted with any developments.

Limoncello is a delicious aperitif, but it is not for everyone. When I first tried it in Naples, I was surpised by how alcoholic it tasted and how refreshing it was in spite of that. I was more than willing to shell out ten euros for the bottle you see below in Herculaneum, but I was blown away when I found out how easy it is to make. I took the bottle home filled it with my own batch, which I'm now enjoying.

I celebrated the fact that I can now legally purchase a bottle of Everclear (you need a really high proof vodka) with Dr. Fankhauser's awesome limoncello recipe. This recipe is really straightforward and easy and all you need is vodka, sugar, lemons, and water. Drink limoncello in freezer-frosted shot or aperitif glasses and savor the Vesuviana flavor.

It was my twenty first birthday and I was throwing a huge black and white party (theme idea stolen f

It was my twenty first birthday and I was throwing a huge black and white party (theme idea stolen from Badders) to celebrate appropriately. We mixed up a large batch of Whamboozie and proceeded to get as drunk as humanly possible. (For each batch: one case of beer, one handle of vodka and four cans of frozen lemonade *don't add water* We had two cases, gallon and half of vodka, a fifth of Everclear and 8 cans from concentrate. It was delicious) A good sixty people came and spilled drinks on our floor, puked on the stairs and outside, broke our patio umbrella, knocked pictures off the wall, and belligerently yelled; it was a fantastic party.

I had invited him though. One because he had become a good friend of mine and two because I had wanted to sleep with him since December. So I did what any intelligent girl would do, I decided to give myself an excellent birthday present and make it quite clear what would be happening after the party. I had already mentioned to him beforehand that he could sleep in my bed and a good friend of ours already told him about my affinity for beejs, so he definitely knew.

As more and more people showed up and the hours began to fly by, he and I would run off to my room on the third floor and wildly make out in my bathroom or closet. Naturally, we would be met with a knock on the door by someone having to pee. I would hide him in my closet and awkwardly acknowledge the person standing there waiting to pee, while just sheepishly smiling. They would turn and leave afterwards, leaving me seemingly standing by myself in my room, looking quite odd. (Note: For some reason when I'm drunk, people aren't suppose to know that I'm making out with someone.)

We had escaped back to my room a little bit before two to try to go at it again. Yet again, another knock. This time I did a signature Shro move by falling off the bed, pulling down my curtain and hiding underneath the bed (seriously, I don't get it.) He just sat there in the dark, on the bed, while Merkle came in looking for my help. She didn't even see me before she started talking to me. "Shro, people are going crazy outside, I can't do this by myself. I need you to go yell at them." I yelled out "uggh, fine" and got up, as if I hadn't just been hiding behind the bed and ran downstairs and began yelling. We kicked everyone out with the help of Mattie, Jenn and Sarah yelling that the cops were coming and I went back upstairs.

Things became really hazy at that point. So hazy that I don't remember a lot of it. But there is one part I will never, ever forget. I got the birthday present I wanted, happy birthday to me, but then strangely requested doing 69 afterwards. Mind you, I hate 69. It doesn't make sense, you can't concentrate. And drunkenly...well, it can't be pretty. But I wanted to do it anyway, so I climbed on top and got down to business. What happened next can only be explained away by the Whamboozie on both of our parts.

It seemed strange, something was out of place and this was far too unfamiliar for me. For ten seconds my thoughts had to pause to allow my nerve endings to reach my brain. Then the next fifteen seconds went a little like this in my brain...wait a second. OK hold on. Wait. Alright. No. No way! Can't be. Is that? Really? Wait. Not uh. Then it hit me and I yelled out, "Dude, that's my asshole!" He reacted in a way that only showed he was just as unaware of it as I was. As he put it, "I guess you don't have an offensive asshole." Thanks? I immediately jumped off, finished my job and then couldn't stop laughing. I had officially gotten a rim job for my 21st birthday. Its like when you're opening presents and you think you're done, but then your mom or dad comes into the room holding one last mysterious box. You rip it open with furry and its everything you wanted and more. Actually, no, not at all like that.

After everything was said and done, we were lying down in my bed, listening to all the noise of the other people crashing in our living room a floor down. We slurred our words I'm sure and talked of nothing important, but then I made the horrible decision to look down at the sheets were lying on top of. I had one more birthday present to give myself. My period decided that maybe it wasn't over after all. There on my queen sized ivory colored sheets were huge streaks of something that would resemble chocolate ice cream stains the next morning. From the foot of the bed to the top, there had been an explosion of Breyer's Chocolate Ice Cream. I was mortified. I immediately panicked. This had never happened before. I tried to explain it, to reason it away, to make sure he wasn't completely disturbed. And then by some stroke of gentlemanly luck, he told me it was no big deal and not to worry about it. I was stunned. "This doesn't disgust you? It disgusts me!" He just kept telling me it was no big deal, but proceeded to make "There Will Be Blood" references. I couldn't help but laugh.

The next day, I told all the girls who had stayed over the story and we all laughed at my expense. Burch's sister helped me Windex the stains out later that night as we pregamed for birthday night two. But the stains aren't completely gone and sometimes in the right light, I can see them and I am reminded of the many birthday presents I decided to give myself and laugh.

I saw him recently. He came and surprised me at my house and attacked me in my computer chair. The chair toppled over and I yelled as it smashed into the ground. We both just laid there laughing until I stood up and found a large gash on the side of my thigh. It was slowly bleeding and promised to form a lovely bruise. He had to leave shortly after that and I went to bed, only to awake to find more blood in my sheets from something he had done.

<3

Side bar on rim jobs:

My thoughts on them are: completely indifferent. It's not hot nor disgusting. It's just hey, someone is licking my asshole. I would never ask for it to be done, but if someone really liked doing it, I'd let them do it. And at any rate, a lot of people know how to get me out in Never Have I Ever now and that's enough to make me appreciate the whole thing.

It was early 1900 at a boarding house on the island of Azzurra. The lady Maria Antonia Farace raised

It was early 1900 at a boarding house on the island of Azzurra. The lady Maria Antonia Farace raised a garden of lemons while her nephew became the proud owner of a post-war bar in the same area. Using what they said was a recipe handed down through their family, they began offering complimentary shot glasses of a daring, brightly colored lemon liqueur they called Limoncello. After dinner, the travelers would sip what Maria called a "digestivo," and the word of the delicious lemon drink soon spread across Capri.

Or wait! Perhaps it was Vincenza Canale and his Inn with those travelers! The truth is, the history of Limoncello is as varied as the people it comes from. Sorrento, Amalfi, Capri...it doesn't matter the location, they all have similar stories and legends of it's mixed and varied history and perhaps they are all correct. Whosever grandma originally bottled the stuff is a mystery and will likely always stay that way. The good news is...we have it to make for ourselves, and that's what I want to talk about.

Limoncello is an incredibly smooth, sweet, delicious drink that is meant to be sipped with dessert after dinner from tall thin shot glasses. It is particularly good with Italian desserts, but drinking it with any kind of chocolate dessert will pair very well too. Making it is quite simple, though all you really need is time and patience. I started my first batch last night, and it was fairly time consuming but not hard. I'm going to tell you how to get your first batch started as well.

You'll need some items to get started. Here, I've purchased two glass jars with seal rims. They were $6.99 each from Cost Plus World Market. Sun tea jars work well too, but stay away from plastic jars or jars that had something in them previously that wasn't limoncello. You're going to be letting this sit for 4 months, any residue that is left over is going to taint your limoncello.

I'm only making one batch right now, but my second jar is going to be started next month and will be a double batch for Christmas. Limoncello makes an excellent Christmas present when given in beautiful little sealed jars with personalized tags. Cost Plus World Market has many wonderful sized jars that work well for this.

Next you will need the alcohol. Here's where things get a little controversial. Everyone who makes Limoncello has an opinion about what kind of alcohol to use. Some will die saying you can only use Vodka. Others will decry heaven saying that you must use Everclear grain alcohol or go home, heathen. They are both right, in a way. Traditionally, the drink was made with grain alcohol...OR Vodka. But the Vodka at the time was not quite so commercialized and low proof. Limoncello is meant to be kept in the freezer, and these days, Vodka will freeze, at least partially, in the freezer if it isn't high enough proof. And if it is high enough proof, it is made with potatoes which will change the taste of your Limoncello! The best way to make this drink is by using BOTH alcohols. You don't need a super high end Vodka, Smirnoff works well, which is what I've been recommended to use. These two bottles together cost a little less than $30.

You're also going to need lemons! You're also going to need a vegetable brush of some kind to clean them and a good vegetable/fruit cleaner. Commercial lemons, no matter how organic, come to you covered in a wax and chemicals which keep the lemons looking their brightest and best the longest. You have to get that crud off. The trouble is you can't really see this stuff, so you're just going to have to scrub them well and use the vegetable cleaner, it'll help. Scrubscrubscrub, you don't want that junk in your drink.

Also, beware of Sunkist lemons. I didn't realize that Sunkist stamps their lemons with a green stamp that is harder than hell to scrub off. Fortunately, I only bought 5 of that kind. How many lemons do you need? Well, that's also a good controversy. Some say you need 10 for one batch, or 15, or 20. And they should be organic. I have 15 organic lemons, and 5 non-organic because the organic lemons were pretty small with thin skins. Here's a quick lemon lesson: The lemons you can buy in the store are nothing like the lemons you buy on the Amalfi coast from roadside vendors that are used to make traditional limoncello. You'll never get limoncello like they do because their lemons are just better for it. They have super thick skins that have a high level of lemony oil in them. Our skins are very thin. So I'll say 20 is better, but if you can get good sized lemons with good thick skins, 15 will work too. I think 10 is probably not enough.

After you scrub your lemons clean, it's time to peel them. I used a potato peeler, but you can use a knife if you want to, though I don't recommend it unless you are very good at using it. The potato peeler will make sure you don't dig too deep into the skin when you are removing the lemony outer skin. Beneath the yellow skin is a white substance called the Pith. The Pith is very, very bitter and you want as little of it in your limoncello as possible. It'll alter your limoncello making it bitter, and no one wants that. So using your potato peeler, remove the yellow skin without getting the white stuff. Any white stuff that sticks to your skin, use a knife to scrape it off. This is the time consuming part, but you want it done as good as possible.

Here's another controversial subject to talk about. Some people say peel it, others say zest it. Anyone who says you should zest it is an idiot. A lot of the oil is going to stick to your microplane as you zest, for one, and you want it all to go into your drink. For two, zest is so tiny and broken apart that filtering it all out is going to be time consuming and you may never get it all out and you don't want anything grainy in your finished product. Save yourself time and heartache and just peel it. The bigger the slice the better.

Here's what you'll have when you're done with all that. You can already see the alcohol turning yellow. This is only 1 batch, though next time I"m going to make a double batch and fill the bottle.

Here's where it gets fun. Make a label or a tag to throw around the neck of the jar that tells you want date you made it and what date it will be done. From the day you make the jar, count of 4 months. That's when it'll be ready for the next step.

Four months?!?!?! Yes my friends, four months. Honestly, if you could leave it alone for a year, that'd be even better. This is definitely a drink that gets better and better with time. Anyone who tells you it will be ready in two weeks or two months is, well, being honest, but they are mislead. You could have it ready in 2 weeks or 2 months, but it isn't going to be very good, it's definitely not going to be authentic, and you might as well go buy a commercial bottle of limoncello, that's about what you're getting. Trust me, put it away for 4 months. Do it. Don't open it before 4 months. Every day or every couple of days, give the bottle a good swish to move the alcohol around and re disperse it. If you can keep it in a cool dark place in your basement, that's best. But if you're like me, you don't have a cool dark basement in the summer and you will need to keep it in your fridge. Some say you shouldn't keep it cold, and maybe you shouldn't, but cold is preferable to hot which is what it would be in my basement. Oh if only I were blessed with a root cellar.

In 4 months you're going to pull it out, scoop out the lemon pieces with a slotted spoon, and start filtering the drink with a funnel and some coffee filters. You're going to filter it with about 6 coffee filters (wetting the filters first before pouring the alcohol through) You should get everything out of the drink leaving it a lovely uniform shade of yellow. You're going to make a syrup with 6 cups of sugar and 5 cups of water which will be added to the alcohol and set aside at room temperature for about a week or two. Then...well then it'll be ready to bottle. I'll have some large bottles that go into my freezer for every day drinking, and I'll probably bottle a couple of small bottles for friends and family to try.

Drink responsibly! This stuff is strong! Sip it slowly, don't drink a lot of it at a time, enjoy it with dessert. If you're under 21, you're not even allowed so just move on.

When 4 months comes, we'll return to this subject and I'll show you the pictures of how I make the syrup.

Oh, I don't exactly watch the tv, either. I follow a few forums and a news site or two that made me aware of it.

And I've posted a bit about my religious beliefs before. "Think for thyself" is high up there, and as for hell, I tend to go Faustian.

"For this is hell, nor am I out of it."

Certainly explains the forecasted high of 104 today.

In any case, back to the music. You may think, looking at my posts, that I don't listen to any modern music. So, I thought I'd play something slightly more modern.

And, in answer to the implied question, I do listen to modern music; It just usually isn't modern mainstream music. But there are exceptions.

AM Radio - Everclear

This really should have been in my Radio post. A great song celebrating the age of the radio. Odd thing, within a few years of these songs was when I stopped listening to mainstream radio, for the most part.

It's mainly because a lot of radio stations only play the best music of the last few years, and the "best" was getting worse and worse, though that could be subjective.

Wonderful - Everclear

I've talked before about liking songs with a lot of emotion in them. This is one of them. Having parents who are divorced, there is a lot that clicks with me on this song.

On the other hand, I'm not impressed with the video. A bunch of children leer at me with hideous grins. Then they start doing asexual ameoba-like reproduction.

And the lead singer is kinda freaky looking. Still, I love the song, at least.

I Will Buy You A New Life - Everclear

Note: If your obsessive stalky ex-boyfriend shows up singing at your door, claiming he'll buy you a new life, don't trust him. Call the police. Am I the only one who thinks the lady in this video is an idiot for opening the door at the end?

This is the best I can come up with. I was set up to make a top 30 but then I realized I don’t know a lot of Hail Marx songs or at least I thought there are songs I know that could be in this list but don’t really qualify. Some are forced like Nirvana's Serve the Servant which is really about divorce and angst. It would be great if I can embed the songs here. Talking about a revolution, Wordpress. :D

It is so hot! i don't do well with heat so most of today's events involved trying to stay cool. I would have been happy setting up at the movie theatre all day hopping from one film to another, but we had to get things done too. So, first...

We washed cars: cold water!
Then we drove to Target: air conditioning!
And we bought a fan: much needed breeze in our toasty little apartment!
Also, luckily, I had donated a pint of blood the previous day which in turn I was given a coupon for a pint of ice cream from Baskin Robbins 31 Flavors, so we cashed in on that: pint for pint is genius!
And lastly, I've been listening to all the best 90's hits by Third Eye Blind, Everclear, Eve 6, The Verve Pipe, Marcy Playground, Vertical Horizon, Matchbox 20, Deep Blue Something: 90's = supercool!

So much for the afterglow.

OK so, I disappeared to go man the big event of the year. Went great, although my mobility appears to be the big casualty. Somehow I managed to "sprain" my ankle" It is actually the size of a soccer ball now. All in all was cool though!

In what appeared to be a terrific idea yesterday, my husband and I decided to walk the half mile to go get me a bandage. I thought maybe walking around on it might help. Alas, I'm a fool. Didn't help my ankle much BUT we did manage to stumble upon the local Everclear concert. Weird, right? Everclear just kinda hanging in Arlington. Anyway, was fun and provided a much needed rest for my ankle.

Limped home afterwards and watched Juno (again). Still such a great movie. And in another moment of brilliance, I thought my ankle was feeling better this morning. It was, right until I put on my shoes. I will never learn will I?

“You know, I fucking hate people who look like they’re smiling as they’re driving. What the fuck are they so happy about?!” Ahaha.

Tuesday was uneventful overall. I added a sixth mile to my morning run and loved it. After work I shopped at Wild Oats and then made a huge batch of tempeh bolognese at home (mmm) as well as a double batch of hummus. I really just want to kiss the person who invented hummus.

I tortured myself that night by watching a labor and delivery show (I forget which one) on Discovery Health. After already thinking about my dream all week, the show just made my chest hurt. So many of those mothers barely even wanted their babies, and here I am, willing to kill for one of my own.

On Wednesday at work, Sean saw The Brothers Karamazov sitting on my desk and asked what it’s about. Ha. Um…Life, family, love, hate, god, the devil, good, evil…

Last night I went to Tannah’s (supposedly “Asian fusion food”) with Emily for dinner. The only “fusion” in my meal was the corn in the eggdrop drop. The Thai peanut tofu I had was pretty standard, but good. They had brown rice, too. Emily told me all about her sister’s wedding in Vegas. After dinner we ate Cold Stone next door. They were way bitchier there than at the one in Leawood, for some reason.

After dinner I went through Target and then watched a silly show on E! at home. Just shy of 9:00, Rachel texted me saying “Everclear! Woohoo!” I thought it was a weird message, but figured she was just listening to them, as usual. When I replied, though, she wrote back that she was at a CONCERT. A FREE concert. In the Power and Light District. AND SHE DIDN’T FUCKING TELL ME ABOUT IT. I wrote back expressing my incredulity and anguish that I was not told. I should have fucking been there. Everclear is OUR band. No one has ever cared about them the way Rachel and I have – TOGETHER. I don’t care if there’s only one remaining original member and that they suck now. Their old material is beautiful, deep, original, raw, perfect California garage band grunge-punk. And Rachel didn’t fucking tell me about it. I fucking never miss concerts. I’m a fucking junkie. And yet there I was at home while Everclear was playing in town, for FREE. Rachel wrote back an insincere apology. I don’t know how long it will take me to get over this. Her subsequent message at 10:30pm of “I got on stage! It was awesome!” didn’t fucking help.

On an even sadder note, Jamie, who was supposed to get married the 28th, has been posting sporadic bulletins about Jeremy. The one she posted last night is the worst. So what has happened, to recap, is that a few months ago she and he got sick at the same time. Hers was a cold, and they thought his was too but it wasn't. The place in his brain where his tumor came back caused sinus problems, and then vision problems, and then trouble walking and moving. He went into surgery a few weeks ago, and fell into a coma afterward, and hasn't woken up. That's when she postponed the wedding. Last week, she said that they had found that this tumor is inoperable because it's especially deep and close to his brainstem. So she had said that they were going to try to do radiation therapy, which had no guarantee of working and also could potentially have drastic negative effects on him, including basically making him a vegetable for life. In her bulletin last night, she said that after all his doctors were consulted, it was realized that the probability of radiation working is next to nothing. He's worsened so much now that he can't even breathe on his own, and there's no sign he'll ever wake up. She said that she and his family decided this week to let him go, instead of making him suffer through very painful and very unlikely-to-work radiation.

I feel awful for her. The whole thing is really surreal. It's like a movie or a news article, not the real life of a friend of mine. Jamie is one of those girls who's always been a tomboy/hardass/kind of a bitch, someone I've never seen even talk about her feelings, let alone cry. All her bulletins to date have been very matter-of-fact, "here's how it is," but in the one last night for the first time she said something about herself, "I will never love anyone as much as I love him." Her saying that one sentence speaks volumes. As unreal as it is to me, an outsider, she must be unimaginably, beyond-words crushed. I wonder if Jamie wishes that they had already gotten married before all this happened. I don’t know which is worse, being made a widow, or losing your fiancé and never getting to experience your wedding day and honeymoon with him. I think I’d rather have the memories.
