American Jesse Levine, who trains at the NBTA, qualified for the Rogers Cup, a Masters Series event, in Toronto yesterday. He beat German Benjamin Becker 7-6 in the third set to get into the tournament and he will now face Canadian wild card Peter Polanskay in the first round. Levine and Polansky have played once before, which was at a Challenger back in 2006. Polansky won that match in straight sets. Coming into this match, Levine is ranked #123 in the world while Polansky is at #276. Good luck to Jesse today!

Some of the first round matches began yesterday, and so far only one seeded player has lost, Radek Stepanek. He fell in three sets to Feliciano Lopez 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. Other winners yesterday included Richard Gasquet, Tommy Robredo, Fernando Gonzalez, Jose Acasuso, Nicolas Mahut, Nicolas Kiefer, Robby Ginepri, Stanislas Wawrinka, and Canadian Frank Dancevic (who beat Mario Ancic in two sets).

Top seeds Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and defending champion Novak Djokovic aren't scheduled to play today.

Marat Safin found his game while playing on his most despised surface -- grass! This morning, the big Russian battled Feliciano Lopez, brushing aside his 1-4 record against the Spaniard to win one of his most important matches ever.

During the first set, Safin seemed to be really uneasy playing against Lopez. He (Safin) got frustrated and he was not trying to hide it. He banged his racket on the court a couple of times and hit the ball up high towards the stands. Well, he's been well-behaved since the first round, so it was about time he showed emotions.

Thank goodness for that rain delay, which turned things around for Marat. He eventually won 3-6, 7-5, 7-6, 6-3.

This is the Russian's first appearance in a semifinal at Wimbledon. And it wouldn't be a great semifinal without facing the guy who's trying to win his sixth consecutive Wimbledon title: Roger Federer. Are we going to see a sequel as good as the 2005 Australian Open semi? I'm really excited for this match-up, whether or not Marat wins. I'm very happy that his mentality towards the game seems to be improving, including his fitness. I hope to see a five or four setter match.

BTW, these two have played a final before, at the Gerry Weber Open in 2005.

Sin dudas, López se fue de la pista del All England con un sabor amargo. Porque seguro sintió que el partido no era inaccesible. En especial, tras un arranque de partido que lo tuvo como dominador. Feliciano sustentó ese buen comienzo merced a ese servicio letal que venía mostrando en este Wimbledon. Con la potencia y la eficacia de su saque, impuso un dominio psicológico importante sobre el ruso. Si Safin se destaca por su técnica, también lo hace por su temperamento explosivo. El español le rompió el servicio en el cuarto juego del primer set y desde allí construyó su victoria en ese primer parcial. Si hasta el ruso recibió una advertencia por lanzar con violencia una pelota hacia la tribuna.

Pero el partido, que había comenzado con demora por la lluvia, sufrió una interrupción sobre el final del primer set, con el español arriba por 5-2. Dos horas después, cuando volvieron a jugar, el partido empezó a cambiar. Si bien el de Toledo pudo cerrar el set en su favor, Safin regresó con otra determinación. En principio, porque dejó su estrategia de juego fondo y apostó por el saque y volea. Y así fue encontrando la confianza que había perdido rápidamente en el comienzo.

Aún así, Feliciano tuvo oportunidades de llevarse ese segundo set. Con el servicio de Safin, igualados en cinco, López se puso 0-30. Un quiebre en ese momento del parcial le hubiera casi servido el set en bandeja. Pero no lo logró. Y el ruso sí le quebró en el siguiente juego. Ese fue un golpe duro para el español. Y el tercer parcial tuvo una situación similar. Safin con una confianza en alza y López sustentado en un servicio demoledor.

Así llegaron hasta el 4-4; Feli tuvo un punto de quiebre, pero no lo aprovechó ni tampoco un juego en el que Safin estuvo perdido en la pista. Llegaron al tie-break con la sensación de que el español estaba mejor en su juego... Pero Safin lo barrió con un 7-1 implacable. Ese servicio que había salvado a Feliciano en este y otros partidos no apareció.

Ese fue el final anticipado. Fue un impacto psicológico insuperable para Feliciano. Perdió la concentración en la misma medida en que creció el nivel del ruso. Que mostró sus mejores virtudes en ese pasaje final del partido. El español ya se había dado por vencido. Ya tenía el sabor amargo en su boca, por esa sensación de que tuvo en sus manos una buena posibilidad de llegar por primera vez a la semifinal de un Grand Slam y hacer historia para el tenis español.

La primera semifinal de Wimbledon será entre el suizo Roger Federer y el ruso Marat Safin ya que ambos ganaron sus respectivos partidos de cuartos de final a Mario Ancic y Feliciano López, respectivamente. El actual número uno del mundo venció al croata Ancic por 6-17-5 6-4 mientras que el ex monarca del tenis mundial hizo lo propio frente al español Feliciano López por 3-6 7-5 7-6 6-3.

El duelo entre el helvético y el ruso, que se jugará este viernes, será la segunda semifinal que disputen entre sí. Anteriormente, Safin se había impuesto sobre Federer en dicha instancia del Australian Open 2005 por 5-7 6-4 5-7 7-6 9-7. No obstante el historial favorece ampliamente a Roger con ocho victorias contra dos derrotas.

Roger Federer para llegar a las semifinales tuvo que lidiar con Mario Ancic, el último tenista que le había ganado en este torneo. El suizo se impuso por 6-1 7-5 6-4 en una hora y 40 minutos de juego y de esta forma ganó su partido número 64 de forma consecutiva en césped y el 39 en el torneo.

En tan sólo 20 minutos Federer se llevó el primer set con dos quiebres de ventaja y cuando igualaban en 1 en la segunda manga la lluvia obligó la postergación del match. Cuando la lluvia se fue y el tenis volvió, el partido comenzó a ser más parejo y Ancic metió mas presión sobre el suizo, pero no le alcanzó ya que en 37 minutos el número uno se adjudicó el segundo parcial por 7-5. Esto quiere decir que Roger Exprés se puso dos sets a cero en solamente 57 minutos de juego. Finalmente, el tercer set también fue para el helvético y de esta forma selló su clasificación a las semifinales de Wimbledon por sexta vez consecutiva, en un partido donde prácticamente no cometió errores no forzados (6).

La última vez que Federer no llegó a las semis de un Grand Slam fue en Roland Garros 2004, lo que quiere decir que con este triunfo ya son 17 las ocasiones consecutivas en que se ubico entre los cuatro mejores de un Major.

En tanto, el ruso y ex número uno del mundo Marat Safin tuvo que batallar duro para doblegar al español Feliciano López en dos horas y cuarenta minutos de partido por 3-6 7-5 7-6 6-3. Cuando López comandaba las acciones por 5-2 el clima obligó a la postergación del partido, lo que favoreció claramente al ruso. Al reanudarse el match el nacido en Toledo logró cerrar el primer capítulo por 6-3. Pero Safin se despertó y con la base de su gran servicio y de su juego logró revertir la situación y nivelar la contienda a un set por lado en 41 minutos al llevarse el segundo parcial por 7-5. La tercera manga se definió un tiebreak, el cual fue un monologo del soviético, que se lo llevó por 7-1.

El cuarto set duró 34 minutos y cuando Feliciano López sacaba 2-4 Safin le tomó el servicio y se colocó 5-2 y sacó para partido, pero el ibérico no se dio por vencido y recuperó uno de los dos break que tenía en contra. Ya con el 3-5 en la pizarra, López cedió nuevamente su saque tras una doble falta, lo que le dio la victoria a Safin y el pase a las semifinales del torneo inglés por primera vez en su carrera.

Un dato muy importante es que cada vez que el ruso accedió a una semifinal de Grand Slam ganó el título tal como hizo en el Us Open 2000 y en el Australian Open del 2005, donde en la instancia previa a la final derrotó a Roger Federer, como dijimos anteriormente.

Antes del inicio del tercer Grand Slam de la temporada, Marat Safin tenía un record de diez victorias contra 13 derrotas y se ubicaba en la posición número 75 del ranking mundial, pero su actuación en el césped del All Englad lo colocará mínimamente entre los mejores cuarenta del mundo si es que no logra derrotar al suizo, pero si lo hace se ubicará entre los 25 del escalafón.

Entre Safin y Federer suman 70 títulos ATP, 55 del actual monarca del deporte de la raqueta contra 15 de Marat.  Además, de estos 70 trofeos.

Que Feliciano llegue a los cuartos de final era algo que pocos podían augurar. Su temporada fue bastante pobre y no llegaba con los mejores resultados inmediatos: el de Toledo venía de perder en primera ronda en cinco de los últimos seis torneos oficiales que disputó (Montecarlo, Roma, Hamburgo, Roland Garros y Queen's; sólo en Barcelona había llegado a octavos). Sólo tuvo una semana brillante allá por marzo, cuando llegó a la final del torneo de Dubai: en esos días venció a tres top-ten de manera consecutiva (Berdych, Ferrer y Davydenko) y en la final sólo encontró freno contra Andy Roddick.

Lo positivo es que aquí mostró un juego muy sólido y un saque potente y eficaz. De hecho su servicio y una confianza impensada en otras semanas lo salvaron en octavos en el partido contra Baghdatis, cuando salvó tres 'match-points' consecutivos. También es cierto que Safin será un hueso duro de roer. El ruso ya se deshizo de Djokovic y está mostrando su mejor tenis. No ganaba cuatro partidos seguidos desde octubre de 2006 y la última vez que había llegado a cuartos fue en Australia 2005. A él también se lo ve con otra confianza, aunque ojalá que Feliciano pueda hacer historia para el tenis español.

Ancic was the last man to beat the world number one at Wimbledon (some five years ago now), but since then, Federer was been dominant in the event. Ancic is returning to the tour after a severe bout of glandular fever and injuries that left him wondering if he would ever play professionally again. Unsurprisingly, the enthusiasm of being back in the sport has given him a huge will to win, and it seemed to be this that inspired the shots that ground down Fernando Verdasco in their fourth round encounter. If Federer isn't at the top of his game, they could also trouble him, especially if the Croatian serves as well as we know he can. Unfortunately for Ancic, Federer has beaten him five times since their 2003 Wimbledon encounter

[2] Rafael Nadal v [12] Andy Murray

Murray came back from the brink against Frenchman Richard Gasquet, but he did have a lot of help from his opponent. It's unlikely that he will get this against Nadal, although the Spaniard is rumoured to be having problems with his knee, and this is just the kind of break that Murray needs to see him into the final as the winner of this match will definitely face an unseeded opponent in the semi-finals. The outcome of this match might be largely decided by the state of Nadal's knee. Murray will have the full support of the crowd again for this match, but I doubt that it will be enough to carry him past Nadal if the Spaniard is fully fit.

[31] Feliciano Lopez v Marat Safin

Safin has continued his momentum after beating Novak Djokovic in the second round, and has made it to the quarter-finals of Wimbledon for the second time in his career. He dispatched another seed in the fourth round after taking out Stanislas Wawrinka in four sets. If he carries on this form, he could be an extremely tough opponent for Lopez, who came through a tight three set match against 10th seed Marcos Baghdatis in his previous match. The Spaniard's slices and volleys could easily unhinge Safin, particularly if he doesn't bring his A-game. Lopez has won four of their last five matches, and this could play heavily on Safin's mind as the match progresses.

Arnaud Clement v Rainer Schuettler

These are two of the real surprise packages of this year's Wimbledon. Both men are now in their thirties and are the oldest players left in the draw by some distance. That hasn't stopped them playing some great tennis though, and both had good wins in their fourth round. Clement dispatched Marin Cilic, and Schuettler upset the more fancied Janko Tipsarevic, who many thought would continue the form that saw off Andy Roddick and Dmitry Tursunov.

The men's field is a little bit more interesting. A few of my favorites are still playing, Rafael Nadal, Marat Safin, and Feliciano Lopez (very surprised at this one). I don't know who to cheer for in this match. Also, I'm not surprised at Andy Roddick's early exit, and wanted Janko Tipsarevic to have gone a little farther. Final thoughts after the tournament.

El británico Andy Murray se clasificó a los cuartos de final de Wimbledon al derrotar en cinco sets al francés Richard Gasquet por 5-7 3-6 7-6  6-2 6-4 en casi cuatro horas de juego y de esta forma avanzó por primera vez en su carrera a dicha instancia de un Grand Slam.

Con el triunfo de Murray, quien se ubica undécimo en el ranking mundial, el público londinense podrá ver a uno de sus representantes entre los ocho mejores luego de cuatro temporadas, tras lo hecho por Tim Henman en el 2004.

Gasquet, actual número 10 del escalafón, defendía semifinales y por perder en los octavos de final en esta edición, perderá 300 puntos lo que lo hará bajar del topten.

Todo parecía encaminarse a una victoria del galo cuando este sacó 5-4 para match, pero Murray resucitó y apoyándose en su gran juego y en el incondicional apoyo del público logró adjudicarse la tercera manga en el tiebreak. A partir de aquí, Gasquet se apagó Y el local se agrandó. El cuarto set prácticamente fue un trámite para Andy y se lo llevó por 6-2, lo que dejó las cosas niveladas a dos sets.

Al principio del quinto y último parcial, el francés se quejó de la falta de luz natural y pidió la postergación del encuentro, pero no le hicieron caso y el mismo continuó. El escocés volvió a tomar rápidamente el servicio del galo para luego llevarse el set por 6-4, apoyándose en su servicio.

El próximo rival de la única esperanza local con vida en el torneo será nada más ni nada menos que el número dos del mundo y finalista en las últimas dos ediciones del certamen, Rafael Nadal, que apabulló al ruso Mikhail Youzhny por 6-3 6-3 6-1.

What a day it was as the second week began at Wimbledon. Two of the men, Mario Ancic and Andy Murray, came back from two sets down to win in five sets and it took Feliciano Lopez five sets to beat Marcos Baghdatis. We can't forget about Marat Safin either!! While all that was going on, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal looked comfortable as ever, and the upsets on the women's side continued.

Mario Ancic kicked off the action with a thrilling five set come-from-behind victory over Fernando Verdasco (who may be Spanish, but certainly doesn't play like a Spaniard). Ancic won 13-11 in the fifth set to reach the quarterfinals where he will face Roger Federer. This is Ancic's second five setter, and don't forget about the grueling four-set match he won over David Ferrer in the third round. I really enjoy watching Ancic play, and it is great to have him back, healthy, and winning again. It is excellent for the sport of tennis.

While Ancic might have started the day, Murray finished it. Britain's greatest hope was two sets down to Gasquet (who served for the match), but won it in five sets. The fans were crazy, the seen on Henman Hill was nuts, and Murray showed has resilient he can be. How he holds up against Nadal after a draining win like this is a big question.

On the women's side, the top seeds continued to fall. Right after Jelena Jankovic went down, fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova lost to Aggie Radwanska in three sets. That leaves Elena Dementieva (who cruised over Shahar Peer) as the highest seed remaining. At this point, that may not be a good thing!

It was a great day of tennis at the AELTC, and I cannot wait for tomorrow!!

Hewitt is the last man to win Wimbledon since the Federer domination began in 2003, but he is unlikely to be hoisting the winner’s trophy this year. Federer holds a 13-7 record against his Australian opponent, who has not scored a win against him since their respective countries met in the semi-finals of the Davis Cup in 2003. Since then, they have met 11 times, including twice at Wimbledon (2004 and 2005). Federer has been in impressive form during the tournament so far, whereas Hewitt was struggling with injuries in the early rounds and had to fight his way past unseeded Robin Haase in a tough opening round match, but things were more comfortable after that. Unless Federer comes off his level in dramatic fashion in this match though, it looks set to be another victory for the world number one.

[8] Richard Gasquet v [12] Andy Murray

Gasquet has won both of their previous meetings on the hard courts in 2006 and 2007, but they have never met on grass. The Frenchman looked good in his first round match against Mardy Fish, but struggled to finish off compatriot Gilles Simon in four sets in his last match. He can't afford to ne flaky against Murray, who has been able to play himself deep into the tournament without being severely tested after facing three unseeded opponents in a row.

[2] Rafael Nadal v [18] Mikhail Youzhny

Youzhny overcame Radek Stepanek in a marathon five set match that lasted over four hours - hardly the best preparation for facing Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard has overcame some potentially tricky opponents in the shape of Ernests Gulbis and Nicolas Kiefer, and will pounce on any sign of fatigue from Youzhny. Nadal leads the head-to-head series 6-4 with wins on clay, grass and hard. Youzhny won their last meeting with some ease in Chennai at the start of this year, but it's fair to say that Nadal was exhausted after a marathon match with friend and compatriot Carlos Moya in the previous round, and literally ran out of steam. Nadal won their only meeting on grass at Wimbledon last year, although it was a five-set affair in which he had to come back from two sets to love down.

[13] Stanislas Wawrinka v Marat Safin

Wawrinka leads the head-to-head series 2-0 with wins in Rome and at the US Open. They have never met on grass. Safin is having a great run this year, especially considering his vocal dislike of the surface in past years. Back in 2001, he did make the quarter-finals though, so he does have some calibre on grass. His win over Novak Djokovic in the second round raised a few eyebrows and he followed that up with a win over Andreas Seppi. This is Wawrinka's best showing at Wimbledon and he will be keen to reach the quarters to cement his position in the top 10.

Janko Tipsarevic v Rainer Schuettler

Both of these unseeded players have had wins over top 10 players en route; Tipsarevic stunned Andy Roddick in four sets, while Schuettler had to work harder to oust James Blake. Schuettler used to be number 5 in the world (back in 2004) but is now clinging on in the top 100 at 94, and has been in the doldrums for years as far as Grand Slams go. Tipsarevic will probably be the favourite to progress through to the quarters, but Schuettler shouldn't be counted out.

[22] Fernando Verdasco v Mario Ancic

Verdasco was in fine form against Tomas Berdych in the third round, whereas Ancic struggled to put away David Ferrer, who threatened to launch a spirited fightback from two sets down until Ancic found something extra. Verdasco is prone to lapses in concentration, as was evident in his match with Olivier Rochus. He can't afford this if Ancic is serving well, as a break would pretty much seal the set.

Marin Cilic v Arnaud Clement

Cilic is the youngest player left in the men's singles draw after the Croatian teenager dispatched Paul-Henri Mathieu in four sets. Clement has surprised a few people by reaching the fourth round here after an iffy 2008 season so far. Cilic was a semi-finalist at Nottingham just before Wimbledon. I've not seen either of them play so far, so I'm not going to judge their form any more than that. If any readers have done, feel free to leave a comment.

[10] Marcos Baghdatis v Feliciano Lopez

Lopez has got to the fourth round without making too much impacts with wins over Brian Dabul, Roko Karanusic and Bobby Reynolds, so Baghdatis will be his first real test of the tournament. Baghdatis reached the semi-finals last year, which is why his seeding is a lot higher than his current ranking. I'm not sure that he's in the same kind of form this year, but he should have enough to see off Lopez and move into the quarters.

El comienzo del partido estuvo muy igualado. Uno y otro parecían seguros con el servicio y hasta cuando el primer break de Dabul llegó acompañado por el contrabreak de Feliciano. El primer set se decidiría en el tie-break, donde el español resultó más decisivo y se lo apuntó con un contundente mini-parcial de 7-1. Poco duraría la alegría para el tenista toledano, pues en el inicio del segundo set Dabul se ponía por delante en el marcador. Un break que sería definitivo para que el argentino igualara el marcador con un parcial de 6-3.

Feliciano sabe que en esta superficie es fundamental no bajar la guardia. Se rehizo del mazazo de la segunda manga y empezó la tercera con un break a su favor. Siguió manteniendo el porcentaje de acierto con el servicio y logró apuntarse el tercer set con un parcial de 6-3. Mismo cliché se siguió en el cuarto y a posteriori definitivo aset, cuando 'Feli' rompió el servicio de Dabul en el momento oportuno y no le tembló el pulso para cerrar el partido con un último parcial de 6-4. Ahora, en segunda ronda, Feliciano López habrá de medirse al croata Roko Karanusic, con el que no se ha medido hasta la fecha en el circuito ATP.

El chascomunense Berlocq perdió en sets corridos ante el ibérico Montanés por 6-3 7-6 6-4 y de esta forma no pudo conseguir su segunda  victoria en un Grand Slam.

Charly estuvo muy errático y cometió 25 errores no forzados contra 17 de su rival, además estuvo muy flojo en los puntos jugados con su segundo servicio ya que sólo ganó 12 puntos de 37 disputados. A la hora de la devolución tanto el argentino como el europeo estuvieron parejos, el de Chascomus ganó 34 puntos y el español 38. El pupilo de Fabián Blengino entregó el servicio en cinco ocasiones y sólo pudo recuperar dos. A pesar de la derrota, esta es la mejor actuación de Berlocq en el certamen londinense, donde ya se había presentado en dos ocasiones y en todas quedó eliminado en la primera ronda, en el 20065 cayó ante Boomflied (259) por un aplastante 6-1 6-2 6-2 mientras que el año pasado perdió por 6-4 7-5 6-3 ante Udomchoke.

Otro que se despidió rápidamente fue Brian Dabul, quien fuera número uno en juniors y que entró al torneo por las bajas de Moyá, Acasuso, Chela y Mónaco. El "Negro" hizo un buen partido ante un jugador experimentado como Feliciano López, pero no le alcanzó y cayó por 7-6 3-6 6-3 6-4 en un partido donde tuvo que sufrir 29 aces. A pesar de su victoria, el tensita de Toledo cometió más errores que el argentino, 37 contra 31. Algo para destacar es que el encuentro fue muy parejo y solamente se sacaron 9 puntos de ventaja.

En tanto, Fernando González ya esta en la segunda ronda al ganarle en sets corridos al estadounidense Robby Ginepri por un ajustado 7-6 7-5 7-5. Otro que se clasificó a dicha instancia fue Marcos Baghdatis al derrotar a Steve Darcis por 6-3 6-2 6-7 6-3.

Finalmente, el "Flaco" de Ciudad Evita pudo completar su partido ante el lungo estadounidense. El mismo comenzó el martes y se suspendió cuando el anglosajón ganaba dos sets a uno. Ayer, el argentino logró nivelar en dos sets, tras venir de dos sets a cero abajo, pero nuevamente el match fue postergado. Esta mañana, tras dos días de idas y venidas el bonaerense cerró el partido por 2-6, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 y 6-4 y de esta manera avanzó a la segunda ronda donde enfrentará al español Fernando Verdasco.

El tandilense Diego Junqueira, que hacía su debut en un "Grande" lo hizo de la mejor forma, con victoria ante el local Mannarino en sets corridos por 6-1 6-2 6-2, y en la segunda ronda se medirá ante Iván Ljubicic, quien fuera semifinalista en el 2006.

Otro que se clasificó a la segunda ronda fue Martín Vassallo Arguello. El argentino ayer al momento de la suspensión ganaba dos sets a uno, pero hoy el español le ganó el cuarto por 6-4 y finalmente quien llegara a los octavos de final en el 2006 se adjudicó el partido tras un 6-3 en el quinto y definitivo set.

Lamentablemente, el que se despidió fue Agustín Calleri. El cordobés cayó en cuatro sets por 6-7 6-4 6-2 6-4 ante el estadounidense Mardy Fish.

Esta tarde, Juan Martín Del Potro chocará ante Simone Bolelli por un lugar en la tercera ronda, mientras que José Acasuso lo hará frente a Andy Murray. También jugarán por la segunda ronda, Eduardo Schwank y Sebastián Decoud ante Marcel Granollers Pujol y Nicolás Almagro, respectivamente.

Si es que e tiempo lo permite, tanto Juan Mónaco como Martín Vassallo Arguello podrán completar sus respectivos partidos. En el caso del tandilense esta suspensión lo favorece, ya que podrá reordenar sus ideas y recibir indicaciones de su coach, Pancho Mastelli, para tratar de revertir esta situación, set abajo y break abajo.

En caso de perder "Pico" perderá 150 puntos, lo que significaría un descenso en el ranking mundial de la ATP.

Otros argentinos que tenían que jugar hoy eran, Juan Ignacio Chela para completar su match ante John Isner, el que pierde dos sets a uno; Agustín Calleri y Diego Junqueira.

The winner of the Nadal/Chela match will face either Denis Gremelmayr or Nicolas Almagro in the semis. Gremelmayr continued his impressive run with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over #15 Dmitry Tursunov. Gremelmayr, don't forget, beat James Blake in the previous round. Almagro picked up a big win over unseeded Mario Ancic in the third round, taking the match 7-6(5), 6-2.

On the other side of the draw, second-seeded David Ferrer will face #6 Tommy Robredo and unseeded Albert Montanes will take on #14 Stanislas Wawrinka. Ferrer won a tough three-setter 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Nicolas Lapentti and Robredo beat #9 Guillermo Canas 6-1, 7-5. Ferrer is 2-1 against Robredo, with one of those wins coming on clay at Valencia earlier this year.

Finally, Montanes will take on Wawrinka in what is an unexpected quarterfinal match. In the second round, Montanes upset Ivo Karlovic 6-7(7), 6-3, 7-5 and then he beat Russian qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin in the third round 6-3, 3-6, 6-3. Wawrinka pulled off a big upset in the third round, and made it look relatively easy as he bear #3 David Nalbandian 6-3, 6-1. Wawrinka and Montanes are 1-1 against each other, with Montanes winning their only previous match on clay.

With the quarterfinals now set, Nadal definitely has to be the favorite (duh). I don't really see anybody that is going to stand in his path. Almagro could give him a good challenge in the semis, and Ferrer has the tools to push him in the finals (if they win their matches). But, Nadal has excellent clay-court records against both of them. He is 2-0 versus Almagro, and 4-1 against Ferrer (including a victory last week at Monte Carlo).

What Nadal is doing on clay is unbelievable. His dominance on the surface is unparalleled, and I cannot state this enough. He is virtually unbeatable, and to think that someone could win 100/101 matches on one surface boggles my mind. I think Tom Perrotta made an excellent comparison in his article on ESPN, to a basketball player in the NBA. He also points out that Nadal has been tested, but in the end he always comes through!

This has got to be a tough loss for Blake. I am sure he is looking to try and get his body ready for the French Open, and a loss like this will definitely sting. He has never had great success at Roland Garros, with his best result coming in 2006 when he reached the third round.

Also falling was seventh-seeded Andy Murray. He lost to Mario Ancic 6-4, 6-4 and has now lost six of his last 12 matches. Ancic will next face #10 Nicolas Almagro, whom he is 1-0 against with that victory coming at Wimbledon in 2006.

On a bright note, three-time defending champion Rafael Nadal continued his pursuit for a fourth straight title with a 6-4, 6-2 trouncing of Potito Starce. He will face fellow Spaniard Feliciano Lopez in the third round. Nadal and Lopez have played three times previously, with Nadal holding a 2-1 edge. Of those three matches, two have been played on clay, and guess what, Nadal won both of those!

Esto desconcentró mucho al toledense en el segundo parcial, no obstante este set fue parejo, pero a diferencia del otro, Murray quebró en dos oportunidades contra una de Feliciano López. Finalmente el británico definió la manga por 6-4 y el partido.

El próximo rival de Andy Murray será Filippo Volandri, que derrotó al francés, Nicolas Mahut por un doble 6-3.

On paper, Argentina had the easiest task, at home on slow courts against Sweden, who (Bjorn Borg aside) are not renowned for having the best clay court players. However they came up against an inspired force in Swedish number one Robin Soderling, who was determined not to let the Argentines have it all their own way.

After David Nalbandian defeated Jonas Bjorkman in the opening rubber, Soderling stormed back, beating Acasuso 6-0 6-4 6-1. The home nation clinched the doubles, but the deciding rubber was the third singles, as Nalbandian was stretched to his absolute limit in defeating Soderling 9-7 late into the fifth set.

Spain had the simplest passage through, as Nadal and Ferrer both notched up singles wins over Kiefer and Kohlschreiber respectively.The only worry for them came in the doubles, as Germans Kohlschreiber and Philipp Petzschner put up a terrific fight, only to succumb 12-10 in the fifth set to Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez (pictured right).

The U.S.A overcame a weakened France side 3-2, and in truth it was down to blistering form of world no.6 Andy Roddick who beat Michael Llodra, before crushing Paul-Henri Mathieu. James Blake also overcame Mathieu, this time in five sets to send the US 2-0 up, before France pulled one back in the doubles, as the much vaunted Bryan brothers were beaten by Llodra and Arnaud Clement. But Roddick was on hand to clean up the mess and seal the tie, before Blake put the icing on the cake, defeating Gasquet over three tight sets.

The most dramatic of the ties was to be found in Moscow though, as Russia had to pull out all the stops to defeat Czech Republic 3-2. The mercurial Marat Safin, who has a 1-5 win/loss record this season, found his true colours in the opening match as he battled his way past world no.10 Tomas Berdych in five sets.

Radek Stepanek tied the match by defeating Igor Andreev in straight sets, only for Russia to take the lead again by winning the doubles. With the home nation 2-1 up, the crucial match was Nikolay Davydenko vs. Berdych in the third singles match, and the 26 year-old Russian was gifted the match, as Berdych was forced to retire early in the fifth set with an ankle injury.

Russia now face a tough away tie to Argentina, who have only lost four of the last 60 matches on home soil. Spain host the USA, who will be hoping to bounce back, following their loss to the Spanish team in the 2004 Davis Cup final.

Spain

• Rafael Nadal - Hasn't played Davis Cup since 2006 and comes into the competition with a 9-5 career record in this international competition. Is playing excellent tennis as of late, reaching the finals at Miami and the semis at Indian Wells. He has a 21-6 record on the year, but so far he has yet to win a title. I am sure that will change very soon though as the clay court season is about to begin.
• David Ferrer - Another great Spanish player that is ranked inside the top 10. He has very limited experience in the Davis Cup, playing only five matches in his career. His movement is his biggest asset and it will be on full display this weekend.
• Feliciano Lopez/Fernando Verdasco - These two will team up for the doubles match on Saturday, and they are a good combo. Both have big lefty forehands and move very well. Neither has played that much doubles this year, but as a team they should be solid.

Germany

• Nicolas Kiefer - The veteran comes in with a 4-4 record on the year, but everyone knows that he is capable of winning. He hasn't been that successful in Davis Cup play, sporting a 9-12 record but don't let that fool you. He will give Nadal everything he's got in the first match.
• Philipp Kohlschreiber - Comes in ranked a career high of #25 in the world. He's already won a title this year, and with his monumental win over Roddick at the Aussie Open you know what he is capable of doing. Since that win at the Australian, Kohlschreiber has struggled going 3-5 and losing his first match in three separate tournaments.
• Philipp Petzschner - Will team with Kohlschreiber for the doubles match on Saturday, to make an all-Philipp team! Is ranked #121 in the world, and hasn't played any ATP level singles matches this year. He does, however, sport a 5-2 record in Davis Cup action.
• Michael Berrer - Currently, Berrer is not scheduled to play but you never ever know. He is a tough out in any tournament, and comes in ranked #69 in the world.

Like I said before, without Haas the German team isn't as formidable as they have been in the past. Kiefer and Kohlschreiber are tough, but against Nadal and Ferrer the edge definitely goes to Spain. The one thing the Germans have going for them is that this is going to take place in Germany indoors on a hard court. You know if it was in Spain it would have been on clay, so that should help.

Overall, I like Spain to advance here.

 Novak Djokovic SRB (3) - Kevin Anderson RSA (122)

I may be the only person to say this but I think a possible upset could be on the cards.  Djokovic will without a doubt not be 100 percent going into this match which gives every chance to the rising star from South Africa. As I say every week winners of tournaments the week before do not have sufficient recovery time and although Djokovic is of a different class to Anderson, fatigue could beat him here. Anderson was runner up in Las Vegas in early March playing seven matches to get there and eventually lost to Sam Querrey in three sets. This shows he has a bit of quality and stamina at the top level. Do not get me wrong, this match is not going to be 61 62 whitewash but Anderson may be able to steal a victory in three sets as Djokovic tires.

 Richard Gasquet FRA (8) - Dmitry Tursunov RUS (35)

The head to head for this year stands at 1-1 and this match could go either way. The stylish Frenchman is one of my favourite players but he can suffer lapses of concentration and go into his shell when losing. Tursunov's 'go for broke' power game is very unique on the tour and you never know quite what your going to get. Some matches he'll make 100 errors and in others he'll be unplayable. Both players have not been on the best form as of late and I fancy the well rested Tursunov to blast Gasquet off the court.

 Juan Martin Del Potro ARG (65) - Feliciano Lopez ESP (33)

I have come across a few people on the internet tipping Del Potro for this match and I think they are very wrong. I agree that Lopez can be unpredictable at times but when he plays well, he is virtually unstoppable. I really feel Lopez can reach a much higher level than Del Potro who actually leads the head to head 2-0. The last time they played was in October 2007  where Lopez was off form and lost in straight sets however he came into his own this year in Dubai where he showed just how good he can be only losing to Roddick in the final.

Predicted winner : Lopez

 Ivan Ljubicic CRO (24) - Fabrice Santoro FRA (49)

 Every match Ljubicic plays now I always think of a quote from a tennis commentator: "The Ljubicic star had faded." He won a couple of matches last week against Cilic and Robredo but lost easily to Federer who was clearly not 100 percent. The pair played at this tournament last year when Ljubicic, ranked 7 prevailed in three sets. A year on and Ljubicic is not the player he was and I can see the tricky Frenchman who caused Djokovic a bit of trouble in Dubai chopping his way to victory here.

 Predicted Winner :: Santoro

Rafael Nadal tiene una oportunidad de oro para resarcirse de su derrota en las semifinales del pasado Abierto de Australia ante Jo-Wilfried Tsonga. Y es que el francés ha vuelto a cruzarse en el camino del nº 2 del mundo, esta vez en el primer Masters Series de la temporada, el de Indian Wells. El de Manacor, que ha solventado sin problemas sus partidos ante Giraldo (6-3 y 6-3) y Young (6-1 y 6-3), comienza ahora su verdadera defensa del título conseguido hace un año. Tsonga es un rival muy complicado, aunque ya no debería de sorprender a nadie. Otro que marcha firme en el torneo californiano es Roger Federer. El suizo ha vuelto a gustarse y está como loco por levantar un nuevo trofeo, el primero de 2008. De momento, no ha tenido rivales peligrosos, aunque el español García-López le jugó de tú a tú. Al que sí que le tocó la china fue a Fernando González, que tuvo que estrenarse ante Ancic, el mismo que perdió anoche ante el otro superviviente español, Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Feliciano López debe de estar estirándose de los pelos después de ver lo poco que necesitó Nadal para deshacerse de Donald Young en el partido correspondiente a la tercera ronda. 'Feli', que partía como el último cabeza de serie, no supo cómo ganar al joven jugador estadounidense a pesar de que volvió a funcionarle el servicio. Es cierto que Young estuvo irreconocible ante el mallorquín, parecía un flan. De hecho, estuvo a punto de encajar un rosco en el primer set. Pero claro, es lo que tiene jugar en la pista central por primera vez ante un tenista como Nadal. Ya lo sufrió en la pasada edición del torneo Novak Djokovic. El serbio perdió el primer parcial de la final por un contundente 6-2.

Además de la eliminación de Fernando González en su primer partido, también hubo otras sorpresas. La más sonada fue la derrota de Andy Roddick ante Tommy Haas (6-4 y 6-4), verdugo a su vez del español Fernando Verdasco la pasada madrugada. El de Nebraska, que partía como uno de los favoritos tras su triunfo en Dubai, se despidió a las primeras de cambio ante un jugador alemán que comienza a ser el que era antes de la lesión. En cuanto a los españoles, sorprendió el adiós de Nicolás Almagro. El murciano, que eligió (con éxito) hacer la gira latinoamericana de tierra, quizás acusó el cambio de superficie ante un rival, el francés Mahut, que no demostró nada en su cruce de tercera ronda ante Roger Federer.

Además de Nadal, la 'Armada' tiene a otro representante en los octavos de final de Indian Wells. Se trata de Juan Carlos Ferrero, que conseguía una más que trabajada victoria ante el croata Mario Ancic. Eran en torno a las 2 y media de la madrugada de hoy (hora española) cuando el valenciano aprovechaba su primera bola de partido al saque para imponerse en el tie-break del tercer set (7-5, 4-6 y 7-6) y celebrar el triunfo tras tres horas de encuentro. Los emparejamientos de cuarta ronda son los siguientes: Federer-Ljubicic, Murray-Haas, Fish-Hewitt, Ferrero-Nalbandián; Nadal-Tsonga, Blake-Gasquet, Djokovic-Cañas y Wawrinka-Lee.

Anabel Medina se despide en octavos

En el cuadro femenino, ya sólo quedan ocho tenistas de cara a la final del domingo. La principal favorita para hacerse con el título, la serbia Ana Ivanovic, no ha tenido demasiados problemas hasta ahora, salvo en su partido de octavos frente a la italiana Schiavone, ante la que tuvo que remontar un set (2-6, 7-5 y 6-2). La segunda cabeza de serie, la rusa Svetlana Kuznetsova también ha solventado sus tres compromisos con relativa comodidad. Otra jugadora a tener en cuenta es la campeona en 2007, la eslovaca Daniela Hantuchova, que se deshizo en su último encuentro de la india Mirza. Por último, la única representante española, Anabel Medina, cayó ayer ante la nº 4 del mundo, la serbia Jelena Jankovic (6-3 y 6-3), después de conseguir dos victorias: ante Kudryavtseva y Rodina. Los cruces de cuartos son los siguientes: Ivanovic-Zvonareva, Jankovic-Davenport; Hantuchova-Sharapova y Radwanska-Kuznetsova.

The American No.1, who has been in blistering form of late, was routinely beaten by Tommy Haas 6-4 6-4 in a shock result.

Roddick, who was expected to challenge for his third title in a row, was comfortably dispatched by Haas, the former world No.2, in their second round clash. The German now goes on to play Fernando Verdasco, who overcame a spirited challenge by Victor Hanescu, to progress to the third round.

Elsewhere, Andy Murray came through unscathed over Jurgen Melzer (3-6 6-3 6-3), and now meets 6ft 10inch Ivo Karlovic for a place in the fourth round. All the big guns moved into the third round with ease, Roger Federer looking particularly intense, as he calmly dismantled Guillermo Garcia-Lopez's best game 6-3 6-2.

Perhaps the most interesting result so far has been the emergence (finally) of the young American Donald Young. The 18 year-old, who was heralded by the American press (and notably John McEnroe) as being their next great tennis hope, beat compatriot Bobby Reynolds, before defeating the number 32 seed Feliciano Lopez. However he now faces the toughest test of his blossoming career, as he squares off against Rafael Nadal, in what is sure to be a fascinating encounter.

Rafael Nadal está a sólo 350 puntos del nº 1 del mundo, Roger Federer. Por desgracia, esta buena noticia para los fans del tenista español tiene un pero: desde ya y hasta Wimbledon, el de Manacor debe defender los grandes resultados obtenidos en 2007 si quiere seguir pisándole los talones al suizo y mantener el nº 2 lejos del alcance del serbio Novak Djokovic. Y tendrá que empezar por el primer Masters Series de la temporada, el de Indian Wells, del que salió victorioso en la última edición y que echa a andar este miércoles (jueves en el cuadro masculino). El jugador que más en forma llega a la cita californiana no es otro que Andy Roddick, que ganó el pasado sábado su segundo título del año (el vigesimoquinto de su carrera) en Dubai después de vencer en la final a 'Feli' López. En Las Vegas triunfó otro estadounidense, Sam Querrey.

No pudo ser. A pesar de que Feliciano López jugó a un altísimo nivel durante toda la semana y derrotó a tres top-10 (Berdych, Ferrer y Davydenko), se volvió a quedar a las puertas de su segundo título profesional (y ya van cuatro oportunidades). Su verdugo en la final de Dubai fue Andy Roddick (6-7, 6-4 y 6-2), jugador que también se lució al eliminar a Nadal en cuartos y a Djokovic en semifinales. El toledano hizo un partido perfecto (anotó 24 'aces') hasta el noveno juego del segundo set, cuando perdió su saque y permitió al de Nebraska igualar el marcador. Anteriormente, 'Feli' se había adjudicado la primera manga tras un 8-6 favorable en el desempate. El mazazo del 6-4 provocó que comenzara la tercera manga con una nueva ruptura en contra, lo que terminó por hundirle. La sorpresa del torneo fue la eliminación en primera ronda del vigente campeón, Federer, a manos del británico Murray. El nº 1 comentó hace unos días que su bajo nivel de forma se debe a que contrajo una mononucleosis ("la enfermedad del beso") en diciembre.

Las Vegas también perdió a sus principales favoritos según avanzaba la competición. El único que llegó al fin de semana fue el argentino Cañas, aquel que hace un año daba la sorpresa en Indian Wells y Miami al derrotar a Federer y plantarse en la final del segundo. Fernando González, Baghdatis y Hewitt cayeron tras el primer encuentro. El único consuelo para el público estadounidense fue que el título se quedó en casa. Sam Querrey demostró que hay futuro. El californiano de 20 años salvó una bola de partido en primera ronda ante el francés Grosjean, lo que no le impidió plantarse en la final del domingo. En ella, el nuevo nº 48 del mundo, tampoco lo tuvo nada fácil, aunque acabó imponiéndose por 4-6, 6-3 y 6-4. Se vio obligado a remontarle un set al sudafricano Kevin Anderson, un jugador que lo máximo que había conseguido en 2008 era hacer cuartos en el challenger de Numea (Nueva Caledonia). Con este triunfo, Querrey inaugura su palmarés profesional.
