Kerala boasts one of the most cine-literate and discerning audiences in the world. Cinema and politics are two abiding passions of the people of Kerala. Bizarre experiments in the medium, with few takers elsewhere, find vociferous votaries here. Tucked away behind the serene backwaters and the swaying palm fronds, even in the remotest areas, are scores of very active film societies.To satisfy their quest for the best and the latest in the medium and to counter the effects of crass commercialisation, the Department of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Kerala, (incidentally the first state in India to take this initiative) created in August 1998, an autonomous institution called the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy.The Kerala State Chalachitra Academy (Motion Picture Academy of the Kerala State) the only Academy for Motion Pictures in India works for the promotion of Cinema as a cultural expression. The Academy is guided by the motto that Cinema should contribute to the total development of man, both as an individual and as a social being. The Academy is engaged in a programme of spreading film literacy amongst the people through the promotion of Film Societies, publication of books and periodicals, and the conduct of film appreciation courses, seminars and workshops for students as well as professionals.

Love in the time of AIDS: The film follows a group of kothis (men who identify themselves as female, who have sex with men) in Belgaum, Karnataka. Some of them work in an NGO funded by the Bill Gates Foundation that is trying to promote "safe sex practices". In the encounter between the NGO "messages" and their stories of love, desire, cruising and casual sex, a complex kothi subjectivity emerges which points with tremendous humour and pain to issues of discrimination and visibility. Given the terrain that they negotiate daily is the condom the answer?

Your movie will be shown on PFC between December 1 and December 5, 2008, where it will be viewed by an esteemed panel of jurors, who will select a winner and a few runner ups and award them with some awesome awards this year!!!

A few changes from last year. This year the festival is open to all - even PFC Authors - who can submit their one minute movie - AS LONG AS - it has not been shown at any other festival, screening or exhibition. Meaning - your movie will be seen for the first time by the world at PFCOne 2008.

All movies that follow the PFCOne Guidelines will be shown at the festival.

This year the jury will select the winners from the “COMPETITIVE SECTION” - this is the section where a PFC internal panel (who will not participate in the festival) will select about 50 movies from all the entries received and place it in the Competitive Section. Movies that are in the Non-Competitive Section will not be shown to the Jury but will be screened at the festival.

We will start a separate post in a few weeks time where we will list all movies that we have received, approved and confirmed for the festival. By the second week of November, we will announce the movies that will appear in the competitive section.

The Festival Schedule

- August 5, 2008 to October 15, 2008 : Submit your entries

- October 15, 2008 to October 31, 2008 : Late Entries will only be accepted with a late entry fee of US$15.

- October 31, 2008 : Submission window is closed. We will not be able to accept any entries received after October 31, 2008.

- November 15, 2008 : Entries in the competitive section are announced

- December 1, 2008 to December 5, 2008 : The Festival. All entries, both in the Competitive and Non-Competitive section are shown on PFC.

- December 5, 2008 : Winners are announced.

One of the winners or runner ups, will be personally selected by Hansal Mehta. The selected winner will be offered all production and financial assistance to remake his/her entire one minute movie in Super 16 or HD, that will be produced by Hansal. PFC will present this movie and forward it to various festivals the world over. We would love to see this offer extended to all winners and are trying our level best to rope in sponsors. As of now the offer is for one filmmaker among the winning entries.

The Details of your Movie and Submissions

1. Make a one minute movie based on your original story. You can use anything from your mobile phone to a professional camera to make the one minute movie. There is no restriction on the number of movies you submit to the festival, but each movie will be a separate submission on the condition that Your movie should not have been released or published anywhere online, video or television prior to the festival. No YouTube, Google Video and such submissions please, such submissions will be immediately rejected.

2. Your submitted movie will have the following parts :

Opening Titles (optional, will not be counted in the One Minute)

Main Portion - The Movie (required, must be one minute or less)

End Credits (optional, will not be counted in the One Minute)

The duration of the Main movie should be One minute or less. Any submitted entry where the main movie is above One Minute will be rejected.

Opening Titles + Main Portion + End Credits should be less than 75 seconds.
If the opening titles and/or end credits overlap with your main portion of the movie they will be counted in as the main movie - which means - the total length of your movie with opening and end credits will have to be 60 seconds.

3. Submit your movie preferably in .flv format (Flash). You may submit your movie in other formats as: .mov, .qt, .mp4, .wmv, .avi, .mpg or .wma but our preferred file extension is .flv - all those movies which are sent in any other formats other than .flv will first be converted by us to .flv before we view the movie. If there is a conversion failure due to any technical reason, we’ll have to drop your movie from the selection process.

4. a. Simply copy and paste the Submission Form below and fill in the requirements where asked. Upload your movie (point 4b) and then Paste the submission form (point 9) in an email, and email it to us at pfcone [at] gmail [dot] com

4.b. Upload your movie to a file storage website like www.uploading.com, www.sendthisfile.com or www.sendspace.com. Please DO NOT USE Rapidshare or such sites where we have to wait a few minutes or come back the next day to download your file.

5. Please do not zip your movie and please do not send us any other extension files. Please do not attach the submission form in a document, the submission form is to be pasted in the main body of your email and duly filled out. Your email should contain NO ATTACHMENTS.

6. You may send in your entries latest by October 15, 2008 with no fees. Between October 16th to October 31st, 2008 we will only accept movies with late fees. No entries will be accepted after October 31st, 2008 10 pm (Pacific Standard Time)

7. If you have more than one movie, please use a separate email for each movie, paste the submission form in the email, attach your next movie and email it to us. There is no limit to the number of movies you submit to the festival, but each movie should be sent separately with a fully completed submission form attached in each email you send.

8. Late submissions will be accepted between October 15, 2008 and October 31, 2008 with a US$ 15 fee. You must first pay the late fee and then submit your movie and form including the name you have made late fee payment in. Click the logo to pay late fees here -

Tools and Tips for making your movie

This festival aims at giving wings to your thoughts. Nothing should come between your idea and realizing it in the film. Having said that, we are aware that technology can get tiresome at times, and can distract you from your train of thoughts. So do read through these tips to help you realize your dream:

1. You should find out how compatible your recording source (phone, camera) is with the software that you have. You can easily find that in the product manual of the camera, or the help pages of the software.

2. Once you have figured the compatibility, find out what size and format does the file take once you transfer it to the computer. Now you might have a rough footage that you will feed in the edit software. Most of the editing software compress/transform the file once you upload it. You should do a rough calculation, after looking at the size of this raw footage to ascertain how big your final, one minute film would be.

3. You might also have a sound sample that you want to mix/overlap it on the film footage. Do find out how the final footage size varies with/without the sound mixed.

4. Once you have the final film ready, it is always advisable to keep a separate format ready for projection screenings. The film might look good on the website but might get pixilated once you screen it on a projector. The same holds good for the sound quality of the film. Make sure you keep the room for this in pre-production.

Just a reminder on NFDC Film Bazaar where entries are now open for
Co-production Market for Documentaries and Feature Films, as well as
for the Screenwriters' Lab.

To decode some of the regulations:

- Coproduction Market participation requires Producers to be present.
- Travel and accommodation, registration for the event to be
self-financed by selected producers
- Being selected places your project in a special focus via a market
guide that's published ahead of time and distributed to all the buyers
and producers attending the market.

- Screenwriters' who are selected to be mentored by folks who write on
international feature film projects as well as by Indian
screenwriters.
- Bingers is an Amsterdam based filmmaking lab of considerable repute,
and with a pretty unique way of immersing candidates in a
constructively creative environment.
- All selected screenplays will automatically have NFDC production
support attached to them for the future.

National Film Development Corporation, the Central Agency established to
encourage the Cinemas of India, returns for the second year with its
trade event "Film Bazaar" from November 26th to 29th 2008 at Marriott
Resort, J.W. Marriott, Goa.
Over these 4 days Film Bazaar will host the following:
I) International Co-Production Market: (26th November - 29th November
2008) The Film Bazaar Co-production Market invites submissions for
feature films and documentaries that are that are Indian centric and
which will be seeking a global platform for international audiences.

Selected projects are featured in an exclusive program guide and will
have the opportunity to seek collaboration in the realm of distribution
and production with potential international and Indian partners.

15 feature film projects, and in the newly introduced documentary
section, 10 documentary projects will be presented at the market to
buyers, producers, distributors from industry leaders  from across the
world.

II) Screenwriters' Lab: (November 26th– November 30th, 2008.)
The Screenwriters' Lab will run concurrent to the Film Bazaar. In search
for authentic Indian voices that are internationally appealing, this
year the lab will be conducted by renowned guest mentors and will be
held in association with Binger Filmlab, an Amsterdam based
International Feature Film Development Centre.
A select pool of Indian screenwriters will be individually mentored in
the development of  feature film screenplays by renowned guest mentors.

Last year Film Bazaar had amongst others, mentors such as National Award
Winners Mani Ratnam and Shahji Karun, Academy Award winning director
Danis Tanovic (No Man's Land) and screenwriters Olivia Hetreed (Girl
with a Pearl Earring) and Bernd Lichtenberg (Goodbye Lenin).

The recently completed NFDC and NDTV Imagine co-production The White
Elephant directed by Aijaz Khan and written by Ayeesha Menon was a
screenplay successfully developed at Binger FilmLab and presented by
NFDC at the market last year.

Applications are open for the "Film Bazaar Co-production Market: Feature
Films & Documentaries" & "Film Bazaar Screenwriters' Lab" till August
25th, 2008.

III) Work-In Progress Workshop – A special knowledge sharing workshop
will be conducted as a part of Film Bazaar for five pre-selected films
at rough cut stage. Each film will be mentored by 4-5 advisors drawn
from India and abroad. Terms & Regulations for this workshop will be
announced in August 2008.

III) Film Conclave & Business lounge: (26th November – 29th November 2008)
NFDC will organize The Film & Business Conclave on global industry
developments in association with leading trade publication Screen
International and will comprise of keynote address, seminars, and panel
discussions. Delegates can also avail of pitching sessions, master
classes & screenings in this conclave.
The Business Lounge aims at providing an interactive platform between
prospective buyers and sellers of all film rights from India and abroad.
Last year in Film Bazaar 40 international industry delegates from over
18 countries including industry stalwarts like Fortissimo Films, Pandora

German cinema is booming – with the recent crop of films enjoying increased international attention and acclaim. This is reflected in invitations to festivals, Oscar nominations, international awards, role offers, license purchases, and audience figures.

The Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan has established a tradition of bringing first-rate German films in all genres to Bangalore – features, documentaries, shorts, packages and children’s films. Greetings from Marupakkam, a media action group based in Madurai involved in organizing regular film screenings, film festivals and video workshops. We also make documentaries. 

As you all know very well, we have been organizing an annual documentary film festival in and around Madurai since 1998. We are happy to inform you that our next edition i.e. 10^th MADURAI INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY AND SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2008 will take place on 26-30 November 2008.  

The MADURAI INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY AND SHORT FILM FESTIVAL is being organized by Marupakkam, in association with educational institutions, voluntary organizations, film societies, theatre groups, cultural groups and other like-minded individuals of Madurai. The screenings will take place in colleges, villages and various auditoriums.

The festival is a non-competitive one with no entry fee. There is no specific theme for our festival. Any film that is produced anywhere in the world during the last 24 months (approximately) in any language, in any format, in any style is welcome. The films that are not in Tamil should have English sub-titles. The screening format is DVD. Kindly allow us to keep the DVDs for our further non-commercial screenings in and around Madurai. Ours is a non-funded festival, completely organized with donations and volunteer support.

The festival will have following sections: 1) INTERNATIONAL 2) REST OF INDIA -films made outside Tamilnadu 3) FILMS FROM TAMILNADU 4) UNDER CONSTRUCTION - films distributed by Magic Lantern foundation, New Delhi 5) RETROSPECTIVE 6) SPECIAL PACKAGE – documentaries and short films from Kerala.

We are happy to inform you that senior filmmakers Anand Patwardhan and Deepa Dhanraj have agreed for their retrospective (5 films each) as part of our 10^th MADURAI INTERNATIONAL DOCUMENTARY AND SHORT FILM FESTIVAL 2008. As our previous festivals Magic Lantern Foundation, New Delhi has also agreed to share 10 films from their Under Construction package. Our special package – a new addition, will feature 10 films from Kerala. Sarat Chandran of Third Eye Communications, Kochi has agreed to help us to curate the package. There will be a seminar on Tamil documentaries as part of our festival. R.R.Srinivasan of Kaanchani Thiraipada Iyakkam, Tirunelveli has agreed to coordinate the proceedings.

Interested film makers are requested to send their entries under first 3 sections only.  The last date to send the entry is 15 September 2008. Our selection committee comprising of senior filmmakers, writers, artists, activists, film students and fans will announce their recommendation on the list of films to be screened, on 15 October 2008. We will screen only the films as per the recommendations.

The Flying Eye - Retrospective Michael Ballhaus

Fassbinder is no stranger to Indian film audiences and the films in this series may have been screened before but this time from a radically different perspective – literally from behind the camera – spotlighting Michael Ballhaus, Germany’s best-known cinematographer.Born in Berlin in 1935, Ballhaus took up a teaching position at the German Film and TV Academy in Berlin.His work with Rainer Werner Fassbinder began in 1970 and it was at this time that Ballhaus developed his unique style. The legendary 360-degree tracking shot, in which the camera moves in a circle around the actor became the hallmark of Ballhaus' style.

In the 1980s he began a second career in the United States where he rapidly became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after cameramen and significantly influenced both German film during one of its most interesting phases, as well as Hollywood’s film aesthetic. Having worked with famous German and international directors Ballhaus is the silent man behind the scene who makes films more enjoyable even today with for example his latest work the Hollywood blockbuster, The Departed which won four Oscars.
The Goethe-Institut/Max Mueller Bhavan is showing movies from his early German phase, when he worked with Rainer Werner Fassbinder.
Indian cinematographer Sunny Joseph will open the series with an introductory talk on Michael Ballhaus, entitled Eye to Eye - the Cinematographic Art of Michael Ballhaus. In the talk, Sunny takes a close look at the ways and means by which Michael Ballhaus transmits the emotions contained in the story to the spectators. This enquiry focuses on the uniqueness of Michael Ballhaus's cinematographic art, the technological innovation and his methodology of creation – SIMPLICITY. All this is discussed agianst the backdrop of a quest into the marvels of eye and the faculty of vision.
 

Born in 1957, Sunny Joseph studied at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune and is a cinematographer, editor, script writer and director, who has worked on several award-winning films. He is especially well-known in the South Indian cinematography scene, with many of his films winning best Kannada or Malayalam film awards. He is an active member of film societies and lectures at various film institutes. With his long-standing theoretical and practical expertise, Sunny Joseph is therefore the perfect person to introduce German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus in our current series.

My diari.... jadi begini my diari dua hari kemarin saya training robotino nih, sebuat platform keluaran hardware dari FESTO, perusahaan di bidang industri di bagaian pneumatik, PLC, valve.. begitulah.

kali ini Festo membuat hardware robot. yang cukup canggih didalamnya terdapat prosesor setara pentium. linux bisa masuk. dua hari ini kami training bagimana cara memakai robot.

mengendalikan robotino yang memiliki roda omnidirectional. tiga buah roda yang membentuk sudut 120 derajat satu sama lain. sehingga untuk mengerakan maju harus dipikirkan secara matriks.

pembuatan software ini kami buat di notebook. kenapa harus di notebook karena kita mengkonfigurasi robotino sebagai akses point lalu kita buat program di PC dan mengendalikan via PC dengan sambungan wifi.

materi yang ditraining adalah software robotino. program yang dibuat ini kita gunakan blok daiagram jadi tinggal klal klik dan atur saja, denger denge yang buat lomba science itu haru pakai bahasa C plus plus c++.  materi trainning hari ini adalah
1. jalan lurus
2. jalan miring
3. menggunkan sensor medeteksi dinding 6 cm
4. ikut dinding.
5 menggunakan kamera
6. line follower by kamera
7.  segmentasi pakai kamera
8. induktive sensor

wah pokoknya kodingnya tidak ada. semua udah di proses oleh function bloknya. kamera tinggal hubungkan ke function blok dia bisa deteksi garis. terus bisa diatur biat noisenya hilang kemudian mengendalikan ujung garis X.

setelah trainning tadi ,erasa pentingnya menggunakan nilai negatif semua sistem robot yang dibuat menggunakan close loop. dan semuanya ada prinsip PID, entah menggunakan P saja I, atau D.

jadi robot di buat dengan perhitungan dan harus mencari karakteristik dari robot. supaya PID nya ok.

I AM THE CHANGE PROJECT

In Jan 2007, MAM Movies in association with Peacock Project, had organized The Genesis Film Project (Please see http://gfp.mammovie s.com/ for more info).where 101 filmmakers made short films for 101 NGO’s in 101 hours. The films made have been used by the organizations for promotion and spreading awareness about their work. The films had a world premiere in Cinemax Theaters in Mumbai and then later screened in various International venues.

Following the success of previous event, we now take this project one step further and Invite 101 qualified filmmakers to make 5 min short films on 101 NGO’s from all over the Metro cities (Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Chennai) in 101 Hours. The event now known as 'I AM THE CHANGE FILM PROJECT'.

The shooting event would take place from 3rd–7th July, 2008. At the start of the event, the NGO's will be randomly allocated to the filmmakers. Know more about the Process and rules here:

All the Films will be shown in Mumbai as a part of Film Festival, where a panel of celebrity judges would judge the best films and award prizes to the winners.

Frente a Big Dog y su réplica humana os presento tres robots que os causarán mejor impresión que aquellos dos cacharros inquietantes con sonido de mosca cojonera.

Se trata de Air Jelly, Aqua Jelly y Air Ray tres proyectos biónicos de Festo, de los que me he enterado vía mirá!, basados en la anatomía y movimientos de las medusas y las mantas raya.

Viendo los vídeos de su funcionamiento, acompañados con esa música relajante, uno no experimenta el "Valle Inexplicable", la repulsión frente a un robot que se siente ante Big Dog u otras máquinas.

Los movimientos son suaves y armónicos, y aun cuando flotan en el aire, la sensación es de que están inmersos en agua, que poco se diferencian de sus modelos animales.

Si aun así abomináis de las máquinas, siempre podréis quedaros con la música.
