So while I'm hard at work on the upcoming CD, I had a realization about the creative process in general.  Whether you make music, write books, shoot films, or snap photos, creativity taps into something that all of us are connected to.  It's a connection, in a way, to something bigger than us--whatever your differing views on what that something bigger is (whether you believe it's God, a higher power, life, etc.).  Think about how many different mediums focus on a similar theme, especially when it's from a certain time period, and it makes you think about this connection.  Pretty amazing.

1. Never do a rain dance on a hill.
2. Make sure you have a lot of room so you don't run into anything.
3. Spin around in clockwise circles.
4. Make up your own rain chant. It should be rhythmical and easy to say fast.
5. Yell your rain chant while spinning around in circles

Would be better live.

You can tell by listening to this album that it would be so much better if you were experiencing it live. It has an energy and entertainment potentiality that is mainly lost on the recording.

I really fell like I'm missing out while I'm listening to the album, not to say that it isn't a really fantastic album, but the feeling that I'm not getting everything I can, from a band that I know is great, leaves me feeling cheated. I don;t remember their previous albums having this same sense of live expectancy, and maybe it's because they were more complete albums and this has something missing, or what.

I do feel myself wanting to dance while waiting for my train, while I listen to this album. The beats are really good, the lyrics are not the most profound of intellegent, but it's all filled wiith fun, and you can tell that NERD really wanted to do this, and loved every minute of it.

The bass is heavy, the drums are big and the energy is fantastic. Go see them live and tell me if they are better live.

A finales del 99 estaba bajoneado por diferencias ¨culturales¨ y discriminación por parte de la directiva de una radio en la que trabaje un par de meses. Abandoné un proyecto que me llevo más de dos años en sacar adelante, y así decidí alejarme de la radio, me cerré a todo lo nuevo y deje de lado la idea de seguir ampliando mi colección.
Un día sin querer escuche un ¨set¨, grabación en vivo, de un Dj que a los cinco minutos dije: que loco esta este tipo!
Comencé a averiguar quien era y otra vez me volvieron las ganas, de probar nuevas bandas, de volver a nuevos proyectos, etc. Y con él también me volvieron los 80s. Les cuento porque.
Se trataba de Fatboy Slim, que si bien anteriormente firmaba como Norman Cook no se lo llamo o reconoció así sino hasta después del 2000. También firmo como Pizzaman.
Nació en el 13 de julio de 1963, en Bromley, Inglaterra y su nombre verdadero es Quentin Leo Cook.
Antes que piensen que hace un Dj aquí… repasemos un poco.
En el 86 lanza su primer disco con The House Martins a quienes se une después del 83 reemplazando a Ted Key.
Antes de 1986 también forma Freakpower (Freak Power). (clip)
En 1987 con Danny D (Daniel Poku) graban bajo el apodo Double Trouble.
Graba un par de temas para el álbum Urban ´88, de Rockaway Three junto a Roy Neave & Bob Christ en el año 88.
En 1989 forma Beats Internacional. (clip)
Junto a Gareth Hansome forma Mighty Dub Katz en 1992. (clip)
Hace un par de singles y un álbum bajo el nombre de Pizzaman (The Pizzaman), junto a John C. Reid. (clip)
El 1995 graba con Ashley Slater, The Real Shit vol.2, bajo el nombre de Fried Funk Food.
En el 96 se decide a grabar su primer trabajo como solista, Better Living Through Chemistry.
Llegamos así al 98, que creo que fu su año. Lanza You've Come a Long Way, Baby, y con este album conocemos a Fatboy Slim. El álbum es un montón de melodías pegajosas y repetitivas hasta el hartazgo, pero todos bailan y tararean su Right about now, the funk soul brother.
Una mezcla de sonidos desde country, funk, soul, dance... cualquier cosa… pero de algo estoy seguro… un sonido que cerraría los 90s con todo, dejando así a la luz a un artista complejo y completo.
En sus puestas en escena se muestra como Dj, y en sus trabajos como un meticuloso e inquieto oyente. Conocedor de interpretes que solo el sabe de donde los saca, no por ser malos, sino porque no fueron demasiados conocidos, y el tomando un fragmento de ese tema lo convierte en un tema como si se tratase de uno actual de moda.
Su discográfica llega a nuestros días y es también de gran calidad.
Muchos aportaron a los 80s y 90s, pero Norman se encargo de participar de esos años para cerrar y marcar los nuevos tiempos que vendrían.

Así me llevo a conocer y a buscar nuevas y viejas bandas que nunca antes había oído.
También a querer mezclar cosas muy raras con lo más nuevo. Y como dije antes que loco esta este tipo. Pero mirando a ese mundo, el de los artistas exitosos, solo me sale decir: que locos están estos tipos!

Vocalist Anthony Kiedis has told Rolling Stone that the Red Hot Chili Peppers are going to disband.

But hold on ... only for a year.

“We were all emotionally and mentally zapped at the end of that run. Cooler heads prevailed and the discussion at the end of our last tour was, ‘Let's not do anything Red Hot Chili Peppers-related for a minimum of one year, and just live and breathe and eat and learn new things’.”

The last album from Incubus  was Morning View and the albums they have after the preceding was abit unacceptable for me. finally last week, i decide to take the risk to make my ears listen to their latest compilation. i was surprised to see that most of the tracks on the cd are instrumental. it's something new to me from them though.  

Look Alive is a live DVD and CD by the rock band Incubus. The DVD includes concert footage from the band's 2007 Light Grenades World Tour, plus personal footage shot by the band during the touring cycle and documentation of guitarist Mike Einziger's operation for extreme Carpal Tunnel syndrome.

The CD comprised of newly recorded original music interludes, scored by guitarist Mike Einziger, plus 6 additional live tracks. Tracks 1 - 10 are all instrumental, fairly minimalist (track 7 being the sole exception of not being minimalist) and some tracks are quite different to anything Incubus has previously recorded. Track 9, "Here In My Room" is a keyboard-only instrumental version of a track from the A Crow Left of the Murder album.

El funk como medio, el baile como fin (continuación de la primera parte)

Por ahora en directo habéis tenido muy buena aceptación en cuanto a público, sonido y selección de salas. ¿Cómo veis este mundillo?

Nosotros tenemos mucha suerte de tener un montón de gente que se está preocupando de movernos el disco, de buscarnos conciertos, 2Fer Records, todos los de Love to Art nos están ayudando mucho, en El Sol Marcelo nos trata super bien; por ahora estamos teniendo suerte. Sabemos que hay otro circuito, porque lo hemos hecho también, de cobrar 30€ llevando a mil colegas en salas infames, o tocando en reuniones de moteros sin amplificación de nada. Conocemos el inframundo y ahora estamos en una sala como es El Sol de Madrid que es nuestra favorita. El circuito que hay más o menos para nuestros grupos son salas estupendas por toda España. Creo que hay mucho ambiente y mucha gente dispuesta si se programan conciertos. En todos los lados siempre hay gente, te vas a un pueblo perdido y de repente hay cien personas que se compran el disco.

Paco Loco es el músico omnipresente en la escena española, está en todos los grupos y siempre con resultados espectaculares. ¿Qué tal os fue a vosotros?

Ramiro había trabajo mucho con él, yo (Rafa) un poquito, le conocíamos desde Jet Lag, donde es un miembro más como cualquier otro. En nuestro caso, contar con Paco en el estudio era contar con una seguridad en el estudio. Él ha escuchado un montón de grupos, de música negra, y ha grabado con muchos en su estudio. Es un tío que te trata muy bien, luego allí estás como dios, con la piscina, nos hace la comida, hay descansos grabando… Entendió muy bien la filosofía de cómo lo queríamos hacer y nos llevó por ahí. Es una cabeza que no para todo el día.

En próximos trabajos, ¿seguiréis por este sonido funk o según se den las circunstancias?

Es lo que sale, tampoco lo tenemos como algo premeditado, es posible que lo siguiente que grabemos vaya por esta línea en cuanto a sonido, pero las canciones serán diferentes. No sabemos cómo va a evolucionar el grupo porque llevamos tan poco tiempo. A todos nos gustan los grupos que de un disco a otro saltan y dan una vuelta más de tuerca. Si hacemos lo mismo no creo que lo grabemos. Continuaremos la línea del rock de los 60 con influencia negra, y por ahí irán los tiros. Este disco es muy puro, a lo mejor en el siguiente introduzcamos más arreglos.

¿Por qué el tema “Shake, Shake, Shake” no lo habéis incorporado en el disco? Es de lo mejor de vuestro repertorio ahora mismo.

Fue la primera canción que hicimos de rollo funky y rock, entonces fue ahí donde decimos ir por este camino. Solo que hay tres canciones que no han entrado en el disco porque queremos reservarlas para hacer algún single o EP. También se debe por el concepto general del trabajo, le teníamos muy pensado con una coherencia y este tema pegaba más como cara B en un single.

Primera referencia, un 7”, algo que está desapareciendo por desgracia, y que sólo algunos sellos cuidan. ¿Por qué apostasteis por este formato?

Eso fue con Lovemonk, fue lo primero que sacamos y lo grabamos nosotros en la sierra, en la casa de un amigo sin que sus padres lo supieran. Llevamos todo el equipo, lo montamos en el salón, y tuvimos después la posibilidad de editarlo en vinilo, ni lo dudamos. Es el gusto por lo antiguo. Para nosotros era algo especial, como también sería sacar el LP en una edición especial.

¿Preferís, en relación al proceso de grabación, el estudio o el directo?

Lo nuestro es tocar en directo, y que la gente se lo pase bien, tenemos unas cuantas sorpresas en este concierto (sala El Sol de Madrid, donde repartieron panderetas al público y versionaron algunos temas) que van a gustar mucho. Es nuestra carta de presentación. Además hemos descubierto que hay mucha gente que no es seguidora de este estilo de música pero cuando nos escucha en directo se dan cuenta de que realmente sí que les encanta.

El funk como medio, el baile como fin

No han parado de crecer, The Right Ons apenas llevan unos meses presentando su disco 80.81 (2007, 2Fer Records/Pias Spain) y ya son una de las apuestas más prometedoras dentro de la estática escena española. Ellos lo tienen claro, “ganas de pasarlo bien, sudar y ponerle mucha intención. Se nos ve en las caras que lo estamos disfrutando. Que si vas a venir a nuestro concierto antes de salir digas: qué me falta, bufanda, abrigo… ah sí, y la pandereta. Queremos ritmo y baile.” Su directo es muy recomendable, el funk pasa por la influencia del rock sesentero y sólo hay espacio para disfrutar del ritmo que llevan los diferentes temas. En uno de sus últimos conciertos en la sala El Sol, dos de sus miembros, Rafa Fernández y Utah, se muestran tan cercanos y agradables como su música respondiendo a las diferentes cuestiones de forma conjunta.

Nadie en España tiene el mismo rollo, sólo Toxio Sex Destruction podría asemejarse a vuestra propuesta, aunque ellos prefieren tirar por una vía más rockera. ¿Venís con la intención de cubrir ese hueco?

No hay ninguno que haga nuestro rollo, aunque sí que es verdad que Tokio Sex Destruction van por la misma onda, pero son más punkies, más histriónicos. Somos muy buenos amigos de ellos, hemos tocado un montón de veces en directo y nos lo pasamos genial. Quizás en España sea a lo que más nos parecemos. Porque Atom Rhumba también, pero ellos son más funk, más fiesta. Nosotros estamos entre medias de ambos grupos.

¿Qué esconde 80.81 tras su título?

Nuestras madres se pusieron de acuerdo y parieron en esos años. Sobre todo las madres, los padres ya es otro motivo (risas). Pero sí, nos gustaba la elección de un número, ya que se puede leer en todos los idiomas, para cualquiera significa algo. Cosecha 80-81. Tenemos el rollo de la amistad tan fuerte y este título lo ejemplificaba muy bien.

Funk en el 2007 ya “arriesgado” pero encima si es en España más aún. ¿Qué ha hecho que tiréis por aquí?

Es algo que tampoco habíamos planeado, no es cómo vamos a intentar hace ese estilo. No puedes hacer eso, no puedes sonar como te dé la gana. En cuanto al sonido que se oye en el disco, también está relacionado con la forma en que hemos grabado. Hemos grabado en analógico, en bobina antigua, todo en directo, hay tomas que están a la primera, no hay nada sobregrabado. Tuvimos que masterizarlo en Nueva York para mantener este aspecto, ya que aquí no se edita. Entonces está buscado premeditadamente, ya que a lo mejor hay un fallo de algo por ahí, de una nota o un dedito. Cuando tú escuchas a James Brown ves cómo dices de repente: Maceo, haz el solo ahora. Cierta libertad, cierta energía, que la bobina grabando como lo hemos hecho, es muy sacrificado. Como anécdota: Hace poco nos encontramos con una chica que había ido a cambiar el disco porque pensaba que tenía algún problema, y es que el último corte salta, porque se acabó la bobina, pasa de un lado a otro, y cuando llega al final pasa eso. Hasta ahí llegó nuestro presupuesto para grabar el disco.

Venis de Jet Lag entre otros, y ahora con The Right Ons puede ser demasiado trabajo al mismo tiempo. ¿Vais a seguir con ellos?

El mayor problema es compaginar los dos grupos, ensayar, tocar y trabajar. Ahora como hemos publicado un nuevo disco con Jet Lag tenemos que distribuir un fin de semana con cada grupo para promocionarlos, hay que repartirse. Estamos ilusionados, y al compartir local de ensayo, nos facilita el trabajo. Yo creo también que un grupo retroalimenta a otro en plan de estos están haciendo estos, vamos a hacer esto. El sacrificio mayor lo hacen los integrantes de Jet Lag y The Right Ons que no tocan en los dos, Ramiro y yo (Rafa) tenemos la suerte de compaginarlo bien.

Level 42 se formó en el verano de 1980, cuando sus integrantes Mark King (bajo y voz), Mike Lindup (teclados y voz), Boon Gould (guitarra) y Phil Gould (batería) se reunían después del trabajo para realizar sesiones de grabación por la noche. 
 
Originario de la Isla de Wight, Mark King, líder del grupo, se trasladó a los 19 años a Londres en busca de trabajo.Mark soñaba con convertirse en batería y al encontrar trabajo en una tienda de instrumentos pensó que podría vender a la perfección ese instrumento que ya dominaba. Sin embargo, en la tienda necesitaban un vendedor de bajos y Mark, que no quería perder el puesto de trabajo, dijo que él tocaba el bajo. De esta forma y con la ayuda de algunos músicos de color, Mark empezó a tocar el bajo, aunque con un efecto percusivo denominado "slap". 
 
En la Isla de Wight, Mark King conoció a sus compañeros Boon Gould y su hermano Phil. A finales de 1979, se uniría al grupo Mike Lindup, compañero de estudios en Londres de Phil (Guidhall School Of Music & Drama). Los cuatro, que coincidían en su admiración por el Jazz-Funk y la Fusión al estilo Stanley Clarke, formaron un grupo al que llamarían "Level 42". El nombre del grupo surgió a partir del conocido libro "Guía del autoestopista galáctico". El número 42 era la respuesta a la pregunta sobre el sentido de la vida. 
 
El cuarteto produjo un Jazz-Funk ambicioso, puramente instrumental. Pronto llamó la atención del jefe del sello discográfico independiente Labels Élite Records, que en el verano de 1980 produjo su primer single "Love Meeting Love", que inmediatamente ocuparía los primeros puestos de las listas de éxitos británicas. Se dieron cuenta de que para poder llegar a un mayor número de público necesitarían un cantante. Mark King experimentó delante del micrófono y se ganó el respeto también en este campo. 
 
Por aquel entonces, los cazatalentos de Polydor pusieron en contacto al grupo con el productor Mike Vernon. En 1981, el álbum de debut "Level 42" conquistó rápidamente el top 20 de las listas británicas, y en el mismo año, actuaron como teloneros de Police durante su gira por Alemania. Level 42 se transformó en un grupo de Pop y Rithm and Blues al más puro estilo, con un sonido inconfundible. Sus irresistibles melodías pegadizas y sus espectaculares actuaciones en vivo situaron a Level 42 entre los mejores, incluso en el nuevo continente desde 1985. Entre los exitos del grupo se encuentran títulos como "The Sun Goes Down (living In Up)", "Something About You", "Children Say" o la legendaria "Lessons In Love". No tuvieron menos éxito otros álbumes como "World Machine" (1985), "Running In The Family" (1987). 
 
En 1987, los hermanos Gould abandonaron el grupo, siendo sustituidos por Alan Murphy (guitarra) y Gary Husband (batería). Publican un nuevo trabajo "Staring At The Sun" (1988). En 1990 muere de sida Alan Murphy. Mark, Mike y Gary abandonan Polydor y fichan por la compañía RCA Records con la que publican "Guaranteed" en 1991.
