[en] For the Yokohama Triennale, hosted by the Japan Foundation, a contest has been organised and designs collected from 120 students. The winning designs for furoshiki appear as a symbol of the fusion between Japan and each of the three following countries : France, Mexico and Canada.
These original furoshiki have been designed by young creators :

French section : Designer: Yuta TABEI, Nippon Designers School

Design Theme: France and Japan - “The old and The new, flowers and light”
This design combines the streetscapes of Paris and Tokyo with a fusion of classic and modern moods. It focuses on a design that brings together the old and the new of the two cities in a fusion of flowers and light.

Design Theme: France and Mexico - “Flower Connection”

¡me encanta!

Furoshiki

if you go here it seems like you could order my shibori omiyage. but you can't. they are only using my images without my permission. doesn't seem quite right to me.
perhaps this "this mother-daughter duo business power house with a passion for creativity" should rethink their business plan.

they won't respond to emails and they won't take down my images. i'm just plain mad. but i'll get over it. i've had several kind offers of pro bono legal help offered. thank you. you know who you are.
not having to think about this and having someone else handle it allows me to get back to what i really need to be doing-making and selling my work and visiting a 4th grade classroom each week.

you know, i could just ignore the whole thing and go on dyeing and creating. but i do feel a responsibility to the greater good to do my small part to stop this sort of thing. even if it feels like i'm swimming upstream. this is just the tip of the iceburg. today i found a second similar site using my images- but they have since removed them. i'm only a small fish in a huge ocean. buyer beware.

it is hard enough to make a living this way but when people just brazenly co-op your work for their own profit it really is too much! it appears as if these ladies want to test out the viability of selling furoshiki products. So with that in mind they create a website and populate it with stolen images. mind you, they don't own the rights to these images nor do they have an inventory to support it- just the images and the grand idea of selling furoshiki. they didn't dye the silk, create, invent, design the item, or even photograph it. they simply searched the internet and flickr for images they liked and thought were creative and pretty (gee..thanks..i'm flattered) and threw them up on their site to see what stuck. then they went around the internet and posted links, wrote "articles", and sent press releases.
this is what passes for entrepreneurs these days. so much for a background in art. looks like we need to be teaching ethics instead of grantwriting in art school.
sheeeesh!

i feel better already. onward and upward! thanks for hearing me out.

(note*-to see the outcome of this situation, go here.)

[caption id="attachment_972" align="alignleft" width="180" caption="shibori girl furoshiki image lifted and used on a commercial website"][/caption]

Woke up this morning to the usual list of email and started hitting the reply and delete buttons as needed with Milo on one arm of the sofa, Tigga on the other, and a cup of coffee. Paper read and discarded to the recycle bin.

Several posts were running around my head, just which one would I write today? First, I have a post on Jude's CQR collaborative (what if?) project- I finished my first block- took me several hours- but what fun it was what- iffing all over the place! Photos have been posted over at the Flickr pool. Thanks for all the comments and all the fun I had looking at everyone else's crazy blocks. There's more to come I'm sure!

I finished all the silk shibori scrap bags and they are all addressed and ready to go. I even managed to sneak in a couple extra to make it a total of 12. (Sorry- no more right now-have to move on to other things. I may put them up on the etsy site for a while at a fair price if you are interested- give me a day or two). I can't wait to see what all you creative crazies do with them. Of course they are not just for the CQ blocks but it would be great if you send links to an image of what you created with them.
All the bags contain some ribbon as well as some pieces of various shibori- I did a little color coordinating by the pool with a glass of wine with my friend Gail (thanks Gail!)and they looked quite interesting when we were done. I hope you enjoy them!

A little milestone to share- the two year milestone of the blog just passed and over the weekend Shibori Girl leaped over the 100,000 view mark-that's views, not visits. But still a high watermark. Thanks to all who share and contribute here.

As I scrolled through the email I came across one that indicated a comment had been left on the blog regarding one of my posts on furoshiki. It was one of those comments that I usually delete as it was someone placing a link for their business as a comment and nothing more (now deleted). This one piqued my interest as it was a site advertising furoshiki so I clicked over to look. Imagine my surprise when I discovered an image of my work being used on their site to promote their product! You know, I take lots of photos and many people have asked permission for usage and made all the appropriate attribution etc.. Most of it for non commercial usage. Not so the case here. This is also one of those websites where there is no contact info, no phone number or address to indicate where they are located. I have filled out the requisite contact form, hit the send button, and am waiting to see if there is any response. I have, however, (thanks to Google) been able to come up with 2 names but still without any real info. What would you do?
Hopefully, they'll contact me and we'll straighten it out.

My friend Linda put me on to the coolest way to make a re-usable shopping bag the other day. Of course, Japanese people have been using this method for about five hundred years, so you might well know about it, but in case you don't, watch the video below to see how to tie three different styles of bag from a square of fabric, or furoshiki.

I learnt about using furoshiki to wrap presents years ago when I fell in love with shibori dyeing, but had no idea that these apparently simple cloths were so versatile. I love the thought of having three or four scarves in my handbag, and quickly whipping them out when I do the shopping, and producing bags seemingly out of nowhere.

[caption id="attachment_81" align="alignnone" width="300" caption="This tying chart has been produced by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment"][/caption]

The Japanese Ministry of the Environment have created the above tying chart with lots of different patterns for wrapping everything from bottles of wine to watermelons. It is available here, as a downloadable pdf (416kb).

I've been practising all weekend with every square of fabric I could lay my hands on. I'm going to hem a few in different sizes, to use when wrapping presents.

If you'd like to do this as well, you might like to pop over to Mommy Cooks for her tutorial on producing a furoshiki with a beautifully mitred hem.

I’m at that age where all of my friends are getting married, so starting now I feel like I ha

I'm at that age where all of my friends are getting married, so starting now I feel like I have a wedding every other weekend until November. Don't take me the wrong way, I'm not bitter because I'm not married yet, nor am I that cynical person that dreads going to weddings...I love weddings! :) However, I'm so tired of wasting all of that paper on wrapping gifts! So, in the midst of purchasing all my wedding gifts for the summer, I've been doing a little research on recycled wrapping paper and alternative gift wrapping ideas. Below are a couple of things I came up with....

1--Recycled Paper: These fabulous designs in the picture above come from Fish Lips Paper Design, which I am now in love with! Not only are these unique and fun designs, they are printed with non-toxic soy based inks on 100% post consumer recycled paper!

2--Tree Free Paper:Not just your pressed paper with dried flowers, but handmade paper, typically made in other countries such as Nepal are available in woven grass, lokta, tree bark, banana fiber, spun silk, and recycled rag. A wide selection of these globally made papers can be found at Paper Mojo.

3--Fabric: To add a personal touch, wrap your gift in fabric. The wrapping job could even be part of the gift if it were something like a tablecloth, napkin, or pillow case. The Japanese have wrapping techniques, similar to origami where you can learn the art at http://furoshiki.com/techniques.php#basic_wrap.

4--Tape: If you choose to wrap with paper, keep your packages secure with tape that's free of polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which releases carcinogenic dioxins when produced. Some good choices would include clear cellulose tape and recycled, gummed paper tape.

5--Get Creative: Last but not least, save some cash and use your creative side. Use things around the house to do the wrapping such as colorful magazine ads, the comics section of the today's paper, and old maps. To add some flare you could add old buttons, flower petals, fabric or shoe laces for ribbons, and cutouts of any decorative paper you have lying around.

I hope these 5 tips come in handy next time you have a wedding, birthday party, or even Mother's Day coming up this weekend. Not only will you be helping out the environment, but I promise the person receiving the gift will feel extra special for putting so much effort into it. :)

The Furoshiki I made for Calluna was just a big square piece of fabric hemmed around the edges (though, wow, I had no idea how hard it could be to sew four long straight lines correctly).
No picture unfortunately, but it was a grey green with stripes.

The Mechanical Randomising Competition Winner Selector -- in other words, Mr B's hand, and some names in a hat -- has chosen a pincushion winner. Roobeedoo, it is you! I have sent you an email, so you can send me your address, so I can send you a wee pincushion.

For those of you who were asking about the pincushion design: the wrapping is based on traditional Japanese furoshiki - yotsu musubi - the second method you see here:

I bought the original sashiko pincushion as a kit from this company. The interior cushion is made from kimono silk. It is really rather lovely. They do not list the kits on their website, and I have had a bit of trouble contacting them by email in the past but I often spot them at quilt and stitching shows (in the UK). For those of you who are interested in the sashiko stitching, Susan Briscoe is the woman to contact in the UK. Her books are very good indeed, and she also sells some stitching kits directly from her website.

Anyway, the pincushion is a traditional and very simple furoshiki design. I'll post a how-to-make tutorial in a couple of days, for those who are interested in making their own bobbly objects. I have become mildly obsessed with furoshiki since the pincushion episode -- they are so satisfyingly simple -- and have been attempting to design a reversible knitting project bag combining a few different wrapping methods. If I manage to come up with a good workable design, I'll post another tutorial.

Have a lovely weekend!

I was recently very impressed with my sister's sashiko stitching. I had to try it. A few weeks ago I bought sashiko materials for a wee pincushion, and tried stitching a simple design with the intention of impressing her back:

Now, I enjoyed the stitching, but the thing I found most pleasing was the resulting pincushion-object. It was so neat! so wee! such a simple and satisfying design! And it fastened with *bobbles*, for crissakes.

bobbles!

how canny a thing is that?

Then a worrying haze descended. I was so enamoured of the prototype, I had to make another. This was clearly an appealing object that might be rendered in different ways, without sashiko stitching, using different fabrics . . .

. . . or several different fabrics . . .

Mr B returned home from a long run to find me frenetically turning out pincushions. "Look at them!" I shrieked, "they have bobbles!" "That's right," he nodded, backing nervously towards the door, "whatever you say. . ."

I have now managed to stop forming bobbles and Mr B has not packed me off to the puzzle factory. I do, however, have more pincushions than I know what to do with. I have given several away as gifts, but there are a few of the beggars left as testimony to my craft insanity. To save me from myself, just leave a comment on my blog between now and March 20th. I'll select the 'winner' at random, and post you a pincushion.

This weekend I went to see the Crow Collection of Asian Art with my friend J. from work. We had a great time! I learned about Ikebana, Japanese Tea Ceremonies and Furoshiki.

When we got to the exhibit, we meandered around beautifully painted Japanese Art, Carved jade pieces and the largest pure crystal sphere I have ever seen. The jade bottles, carvings and boxes were amazing! Then it was time for the Tea Ceremony discussion. It was fascinating. The lecturer was one of the owners of The Cultured Cup, A gourmet tea, coffee, and chocolate shop located in Dallas. I got to taste three different types of Japanese green teas; Hojicha, Genmaicha and Sencha Midori. I loved them all, and was amazed by the different flavors they all had. Kyle, the speaker was very knowledgeable. I learned about Chabana - the special floral arrangements used for tea ceremonies, and "Wabi-Sabi style"- which basically means that in life one should appreciate the beauty of things that are imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. That is why the imperfection of the Japanese Tea bowl is viewed as beautiful. Kyle passed around examples of Japanese tea bowls, and a German made perfect porcelain cup. This helped in emphasizing his point, that it is important to appreciate the beauty in the imperfect.

After the Tea Ceremony presentation, we went to see the Ikebana. They were beautiful. In principle, Ikebana is a disciplined art form where the arrangement is a living thing in which nature and humanity are brought together. It is steeped in the philosophy of developing a closeness with nature. Many practitioners of Ikebana feel that the spiritual aspect of Ikebana is very important. One becomes quiet when one practices Ikebana. It helps you to live "in the moment" and to appreciate things in nature that previously seemed insignificant. One becomes more patient and tolerant of differences, not only in nature, but more generally in other people. In some Ikebana, the relationship between heaven, earth and man is represented. There are many different schools of Ikebana, each with their own methods and techniques. Americans tend to just throw flowers in a vase. In Ikebana; thought, composition, spirituality, and connection with nature, are all explored to create a living work of art.

The final event of the day was a demonstration of Furoshiki. Furoshiki is the Japanese art of cloth wrapping. We even got to try our hand at it. In 2006 in Japan, their Minister of Environment recommended that people use Furoshiki to help reduce waste in the environment. She wanted the utilization of "Mottainai Furoshiki" to contribute to reducing household waste from plastic bags. I am going to make myself a purse using this method with one of my old scarves.

All in all, I had a great time! I learned some very fascinating things about the Japanese culture, and I definitely want to explore this some more!

With all the online and offline reading I've been doing, I have been discovering all sorts of things - and really enjoyed learning about Furoshiki. Delightful idea for christmas and gift wrapping don't you think? But for now, imagine enjoying a few bottles of wine that we've brought along furoshiki style!
