Looks like we might have to start calling ourselves Gayelle after all. Recently, citizens of the Isle of Lesbos, Greece, have begun taking action to sue the nation of Greece to put a ban on Gays' use of the term lesbian to mean a homosexual woman. Here's a snippet:

The man spearheading the case, publisher Dimitris Lambrou, claims that international dominance of the word in its sexual context violates the human rights of the islanders, and disgraces them around the world...He says it causes daily problems to the social life of Lesbos's inhabitants.

Now, I can totally understand this. Homophobia is rampant and dykes and gays are constantly victims of hate crimes, whether they be verbal, physical, outright or subtle. But taking action to ban Gays' use of the term is buying into the homophobe hype that it is, indeed, disgraceful to be, and/or to call yourself, a lesbian. What you should be working toward is a sea change in public opinion about gays worldwide: we are here, and we are just trying to live our lives.

The article goes on to prove its point that dykes should stop calling themselves lesbians by saying that contrary to popular belief, Sappho was not even a dyke. While this may be true, their proof tickles me a quite bit:

The term lesbian originated from the poet Sappho, who was a native of Lesbos. Sappho expressed her love of other women in poetry written during the 7th Century BC. But according to Mr Lambrou, new historical research has discovered that Sappho had a family, and committed suicide for the love of a man.

First of all, everyone knows lesbians never have families. Never. And as for the suicide: perhaps if she had STAYED ALIVE for a man, then I might believe you...

***************************************************************

And rich people are doing stupid, wasteful shit again! Chops sent me this link to a blurb about the "A Diamond is Forever" campaign (scroll down). Apparently, they plan to hand out 1,000 red roses in Grand Central Terminal next week, all of which will have a number attached for a drawing to win a $5,000 diamond necklace. This new initiative is to celebrate...well, raping and pillaging Africa, I guess. As if the diamond issue isn't enough, now they're doing roses. What's next? I'm sorry, but Bill Gates and Bono can throw as much money at Africa they want to "promote economic development" but if the "economies" revolve around the US's whims, ain't nothing gonna change. US out of AFRICA! But if you are handed a rose...I hope you win. For reals.

I will not, under any circumstances, support the campaign to start using the word “gayelle

I will not, under any circumstances, support the campaign to start using the word "gayelle" in lieu of the word lesbian.

First of all, don't you have anything better to do with your time? I'm sure something in your house needs to be cleaned.

Second: Gayelle sounds too close to gazelle. You say it and I picture a herd of thin-legged hoofstock jumping over a log.

Third, gayelle implies you are a suffix to a root word, as if to say female homosexuals are a subset of male homosexuals. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but lesbians actually have nothing to do with men at all.

Fourth, there isn't anything inherently negative about the word lesbian. It has a rich and strong history, a history that is all our own. Read the wiki and get over yourself.

Finally, does Marg Piercy know you posted her poem on your blog? I'd like to hear what she thinks of gayelle.

PS: Dear bisexuals: they are trying to start calling you hipshe. WTF?

I’m not taking this thing too seriously, but if you're a ladies' lady and feel up to sporting a new t-shirt that will incite curious and confused gazes at the boobage area, order yourself a Gayelle t-shirt. Or for those not wanting that much attention, try a teddy bear, sticker or apron. And what the heck, go ahead and call yourself an activist while you’re at it.

Sapphicchic.com, an online networking website for lesbians and their allies, is currently merchandising these products as part of a movement to replace the word lesbian in our culture with gayelle, a combination of the word gay with elle, the French pronoun for a woman. They’ve introduced the term “with the idea and hope that it will have a worldwide appeal, and ultimately, supersede the word lesbian; a suitable replacement is necessary for positive language and the healthy self-esteem of the gay-female-population.” They go on to assert that “the word lesbian is antiquated; it is not representative of modern times, and or, of persons with modern views. Lesbian does not sound cheerful and fun, nor does it mean merry, like the word gay does; rather, it sounds more like loner, loser, and less. Gay females deserve more, not less.”

Same philosophy goes for bisexuals, by the way. They should now be referred to as hipshe's, because now only people who are attracted to both genders are considered hip--the tight pants and funky haircuts alone just don't cut it anymore."

Regardless of the fact that their website seems more like a platform to showcase their mediocre, fancy-filled fiction and poetry than a networking site aimed at spearheading a social movement, the ladies aren’t wrong. For a lot of people who haven’t yet integrated the word into their lexicon, lesbian can be brazen, flinch-inspiring and even offensive. I blame that big invasive b in thrown into the middle of the term (in addition to prejudices against homosexuality and all that stuff as well.) It sticks out like plaid button-ups in a sea of summer dresses, not just because of its bursting plosive nature, but also because the sounds leading up to it are soft and seductive, which amplifies the b's sound. Compare it to the word Republican, for example. The vowels preceding the b in that term diminish the letter’s potentially disrupting effect, so if people shudder or cringe a bit upon hearing Republican, chances are it’s because of the word's definition and associations rather than how it sounds. Sure, that's a totally geeky way of looking at the issue. But the point is, never underestimate the power of pretty rhetoric: individuals have made careers, governments have started wars, companies have sold you useless gizmos and services, and a young senator from Illinois is on his way to becoming the next President of the United States by laying more weight on the power of eloquence than on the conviction of reason and straight-up facts. Just be sure to use the power wisely.
