Blumige Grüße

I thought this was one of the most perfect flowers I've ever received. I gushed about it when BW and I were down at Granville Island last week and, after I walked away, she completely surprised me, buying it with the rest of her bunch.

You'd think that a nurse responsible for the lives of human patients would be able to care for a little flower. My fate, however, must've been carved in stone when my little bean plant wouldn't sprout in Kindergarten for Mother's Day. This was further confirmed when both of my clone plants rotted during my biotechnology course in university. (Some students lost one of their two, but I was the only one who killed both.)

If Alex buys me flowers, we have the understanding that I admire them and he takes care of them. Even then, me just looking at them seems to make them die faster. So I won't even tell you how long my beautiful bright red Gerbera lasted... but it was loved dearly, nonetheless!

Gerbera daisies, chocolate center, stock, and hypericum. That's what it takes to make the most delicious and innovative (not to mention tastefully simple and clean) wedding of the season.

This wedding was just recently (a few days ago) hosted at the Waterman Grill in Providence, RI. The chocolate brown with white was something wanted by the bride, (we jokingly showed her the brown ribbon with a leopard print ribbon underneath... which actually didn't look that bad). Upon first sitting down with us she had said that none of the other florists she had visited could figure out what she wanted... as you can see we did:

Anyways, this arrangement is for a real gardener and plant lover. We used a ceramic pea pod container and filled it with a large variety of plants, such as Stars of Bethlehem, Tritoma, Lavender Roses, Tuber Roses, Cabbage, Gerbera, Adriatic Lilies, Rose Hips, Pink Spray Roses, and Rosemary.

This was the very first painting I did of a Gerber Daisy. I've always loved them, their incredibly rich colors, and the flower that bursts at the top of the impossibly long stem. I was so intrigued with the teeny little petals surrounding the center of the flower. The paper was from a pad of postcard-sized paper I bought years ago to take on a vacation with a traveling paint kit, and that I didn't end up using. Until I got home, that is! More Gerberas to come.

Step 1:

First step is to make the centre.
Using the 20 gauge wire hook the wire as per the picture.
Then use the daisy stamp to make the centre and insert the wire into the centre.Allow to dry (I usually make the centres 2-3 days ahead) and then using the liquid or paste colours, colour the centre in the colour of your choice.

Step 2:

Roll out the modelling paste and cut out 2 chrysanthemum petals.

Step 3:

Once the petals are cut, using a sharp knife or fine scissors, cut each petal into 3 or 4 as per the photo.
Repeat for both chrysanthemums.

Step 4:

Using some sugar glue, place one flower on top of the other and spread the petals out to make them look full.

Step 5:

Moisten the modelling paste with some sugar glue and attach the dried centre.
Using your hands, cup the petals around the centre as you need this layer to attach closely to the centre.

Step 6:

Repeat steps 2 – 4.
Then attach the petals to the centre and this time, instead of cupping them, let them dry relatively flat as per photo.

Step 7:

Roll out more modelling paste and this time using the large gerbera cutter, cut out 2 flowers.
Vein, using a veining tool or some corn husk.
Place one flower on top of the other and attach using some sugar glue.
Spread petals out so that flower looks full.

Step 8:

Moisten flower centre with sugar glue and attach centre. Allow to dry in flower stand.

Gerberas can be coloured using petal dusts or you can colour
the paste before beginning.

the dinner to celebrate jss establishment since 45 years ago brought most of us back together again, thinking that its laoshi's retirement. the gerbera was not a door gift, but a gesture of the teammate who wants to make our day happy. a collage was made to our laoshi by our senior, with our many hideous photos of the past, and notes from the present, that i wrote with much difficulty. coach and laoshi looked the same, as if they have never aged. its the constant exercise, i think, that made them looked young.

and its heart warming seeing all of them again. met some teachers, some left, some stayed. some remembered our faces, not our names. dinner was like a ge-tai with the auctions going on in the noisy background. 20,000SGD, i think was the highest bid for one of the paintings. the dinner was a drag too. half the time, all was complaining when the food will come. because 3 hours into the dinner, only 3 out of the 9 dishes were served. nevertheless, photo-whoring started as soon as all settled down, in the midst of catching up. :)

I have some gerberas in a vase in front of my window. I don't ever buy gerberas, but I was buying flowers for a boy who was staying in my house and they seemed appropriately manly. And you know what? I really, really like them. I might only ever buy gerberas from now on.

Are flower names capitalised? And why do I want the plural of gerbera to be "gerbera"?

Viime viikonloppuna Turun tuomiokirkon edustalle kannettiin kukkia. Ja paljon. Kuulemani mukaan yksityinen kukkafirma on lahjoittanut kukkameren kirkon edustalle. Tulevana viikonloppuna halukkaat voivat hakea kasveja kotiin.

Kirkon edusta on hetkeksi muuttanut muotoaan, ihan hyvällä tavalla.
