Love is a sadness
Love is a madness
We are the addicts

What are we if we’re not in love?

-The Moon Is a Magnet, Jon Foreman

Well, what is love? love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love love--does that look weird to you after seeing it so many times?

Or does it invoke certain feelings or memories? Well, I don't know what you feel, but I know what I feel. Can you and I explain it? Probably not with all the languages, dictionaries, or words in the universe. But I'll tell you that love isn't simply the chemicals in your body that sends messages to your brain that tell it to make you feel "love". An attempt at using science to describe or define love is a sad one. How come the answer is out of reach? Why are there so many kinds of love? Love of family, friends, God, a significant other; loving life, loving yourself, loving music--it can be anything. The myriad of types of love isn't to blame for the abstract quality of this emotion (or any emotion at that).

Love has no definition. I'd like to think it's a powerful connection that binds everything and keeps our lives in order and movement. What I feel when I think I'm in love might be different than what you feel when you think you're in love. When we hear that other people (say, the "significant other" kind of love, or lover love :D) fall in love, what's probably happened is a split second of alignment of how they "love". Maybe it'd make more sense if I just said that maybe they are one in their feeling of love for each other (of course). Sometimes we get so set with certain definitions for certain things, we forget what it means to us, or what it means as a whole. In the end, we only know when we feel that we're in love, loving, or loved, and the thrill and joy associated with it is always indescribable.

We can't, and won't ever grasp what love "is" for anything, and I believe that's the beauty of it all.

Saw this bottle of wine with the embossed grape and leaf logo and thought it would make a good prop for a stock photo about wine. Took off the label and placed a wine glass behind the bottle which created the illusion that the glass was in the bottle. Placed a sheet of plexiglass a couple of feet behind the bottle and only used one Arri fresnel shining through the plex and bottle to light the set. Used a Cambo 4x5 view camera with a 6x9cm roll film back to record the image on Fuji tungsten transparency film and then scanned with a Nikon Coolscan 9000 scanner.

How The Clouded Glass Sphere Becomes Opened up to Light

Al Shinn has given me a link to work bein

How The Clouded Glass Sphere Becomes Opened up to Light

Al Shinn has given me a link to work being done by Alvaro Amaro de Azevedo, which might explain why a hypothesized Spinoza lens polishing expertise could prove decisive in employing a single lens technique. First, Amaro de Azevedo approximated a simple, thread-melting techique thought to have been used by Van Leeuwenhoek, and achieved practical results of about x500 magnification and more, reaching those even achieved by Van Leeuwenhoek himself (x266 is I believe the highest magnification of an existing Leeuwenhoek lens, but Ruestow estimates that x500 could not have been "unusual", noting that a recommended lens by Hartsoeker would "entail a magnification of x770"). Amaro de Azevedo even reached a magnification level of x1000 using soley the melted beads of glass thread, whose proximity to the specimen challenged most 17th century specimen staging capacities. If nothing more, this established the ease of dramatic single lens, beaded magnification achievement. Here his experiments are detailed.

Yet Mr. Amaro de Azevedo later learned that nearly all of existent Leeuwenhoek lenses had been ground lenses, and not simply beaded from melted glass. He set to grounding equally powerful lenses. As I have said, Johannes Hudde is reported to have ground his bead lenses (in salt), and Hooke too ground his bead lenses. It has consternated some modern analyzers of this method as to why a rather effective, tiny glass globule lens should prove insuffient? Why grind glass? The answer to this might help establish why an additional and otherwise guarded means of grinding technique might pave the way towards a more effective beaded lens.

Alvaro Amaro de Azevedo in his second round of experiments actual unveils some of the possibilities for these techniques (improvised on modern equipment), and produced results suggestive of the necessity of the additional polishing means. Here is his article, "The Challenge of Grinding Lenses for Single Lens Microscopes" (keeping a close eye upon the aspects that were feasible in the 17th century).

The first thing I notice is that the grinding abrasive required the use of mills, as Alvaro decides to use sand:

Anyone who has ever read about lens grinding techniques is aware that the main resource for succeeding is the grinding powders...I honestly have no idea where such powders could be found locally but the article mentions that Leeuwenhoek might have employed sand and graded it by levigation. So that was what I did. The sand was collected from a nearby beach and then washed thoroughly. After it had dried, the sand was put into a mill where it was crushed for one hour. The resulting flour was then suspended in water and through levigation six fractions were collected. I named them from 1 (the coarsest) to 6 (the finest).

As an simple point of correspondence, bought at the auction of Spinoza's estate were various "mills" (molens):

and various instruments for grinding ('en verscheidene slypgereedschap') like mills ('molens', also plural!) and great and small metal dishes serving for them ('groote en kleine metale schotels daartoe dienende') and so on" (en so voort).

The plurality of mills suggests a gradation of grits produced, such as perhaps those used by Amaro de Azevedo. Whether these were of salt as Hudde is said to have used, or of sand, these mills speak to a particular technique of grinding and polishing, something that could be passed on through the equipment alone.

Next I noticed his search for a polishing agent:

For polishing purposes, I tried to find the jewelry rouge (iron oxide) but it was in vain. Then I tried to smash a hematite stone and I got a powder that was too coarse for a good polishing powder. Then I made many attempts to find a good substitute and at the end of the day I made a polishing tool that doesn't need powder to carry on polishing.

His solution is certainly not one that Spinoza would use, though the iron oxide powder may have been something that Spinoza picked up in Amsterdam when he learned to grind glass, given the plethora of gem and diamond polishers that may have florished in his community (it was one for the few non-Guild regulated buisnesses available to Jews). Robert Hooke used "tripoli" (a diatomaceous material, getting its fineness from the remains of microscopic organisms). This was long used by Venetian spectacle makers, its use forwarded by instructional manuscripts written by Sirturus and then Rheita. Because Van Leeuwenhoek put tripoli under his microscope to examine it, it is quite likely that he used this as well.

Lastly though, as Amaro de Azevedo ground his smaller and smaller lenses, leaving behind a cut glass blank, and eventually grinding melted beads of glass themselves, as did Hooke and Hudde (and likely Van Leeuwenhoek), achieving greater and greater limits of magnfication, he comes to the vital point, illumination and focal distance:

The main advantage of ground lenses are that they can focus at longer distances compared to the same magnification from ball lenses and thus, I could capture images from already mounted slides that wasn't possible before. I also noticed that ground lenses allow wider apertures and as consequence, the images seemed to be brighter and higher in resolution.

A modern maker of the two comparable lenses, that is, of the simple beads of glass spheres, and their tiny ground counterparts might not readily notice the distinct advantage that Amaro de Azevedo brings out here. The reason is, the quality of glass that is readily available to us simple was not makeable then. Glass, even the best of it, was bubbled, marred with striations, and considerably darker, tinged with colored. Any advantage in opening up the aperture and letting in more light was not simply a convenience, but rather probably marked the difference between being able to see a specimen or not. For instance, when Robert Hooke says that the single bead lens is simply too small, and that he fears for his eyesight, he means not only too small, but too small and too dark.

Aligned with this point was the techniques of lighting the specimen would prove most important. Ruestow infers that Hudde's microscopic observations may have been impaired for many years for it did not occur to him to look directly at a light source, with the specimen in between, an improvement attributed to Van Leeuwenhoek (22, n.85). Is this why Hudde did not come up with any astounding discoveries despite owning the beading technique for more than decade before Van Leeuwenhoek comes upon the scene?

These three factors, rather poor occluding glass, just discovered techniques in lighting and specimen preparation, and in some cases guarded secrets in grinding and polishing techniques, all point to the difficulty of microscopic discovery, when using bead-lenses. What is suggested is that the best polishing of these tiny melted spheres would open up the aperture and clarity of an otherwise murky ball glass lens, when pushed to the greatest of magnifications. Thus the state of the technology may have demanded an adequate polishing means, one provided by the purchase of Spinoza's equipment by the Huygenses.

Like to see my new vintage glass with the reflect-o-matic sterling silver treatment...Glows....

Trying to upload photos and descriptions for a few new pieces....

Anyway, I may be blogging more in the next few days... I have been stuck in bed for the most part all week. While it sucks that baldguy lost his job and our unemployment rate here is pretty miserable, it was good timing as he is keeping after boyo and fetching me provisions.

Something is very wrong in my back and I am trying to figure it out...
I had a big bad emergency spine surgery 12 years ago and the pain is near there.... I fear another infection or that perhaps the vertebrae are finally squashing some nerve... Anyway. It really freaking hurts.

But, I can stand still and type and I feel ok, for the most part....And I'm not a wuss. I have had pain every day for 12 years. But dull, achy pain is one thing, feeling like someone is chiseling into your spine and ribs (on just one side, thankfully) is another.

So here I am...

Had an hour and 15 minute long MRI this morning but won't know anything until they decide to call me. Medicine is so lax down here it's ridiculous, so I'm not holding my breath for an answer. When I had the parathyroid tumor two years ago the docs suggested we use a "wait and see" approach. I wound up doing a boat load of research and demanded the scan to see what was going on and then I found my own surgeon to schedule the surgery(Dr. Norman's Parathyroid Clinic in Tampa- amazing surgeon...). Wait and see. Those things don't just disappear- they are there and they cause problems until they are removed or you die from the freaking side effects (heart issues, digestive issues, liver issues...yikes!)... So I'm none too confident about my medical care here...If whatever this weird back thing is needs anything more invasive than an alcohol swab I'm heading north for a spell. If this is another bone infection, I'm worried. Last time they didn't find it until I was in ICU, on all sorts of apparatus, in a coma. No more comas for me, thank you very much. One was more than enough! I have to be here for my little guy.

Anyway. Here I am....Trying to stay as still as possible while my brain wants to run around doing a happy dance because the new issue of BUST magazine is coming out next week and woohoo! one of my pieces is in the Etsy co-op ad. Yay! So buy a copy and check out all of the shops.

Ok. Going to grab some tea and go be as still as a rock in front of the TV.

Sorry for the kvetching. I'm in a good mood really I am!

Hugs, albeit very gently frame-y ones, all around...
07/17/08 – We just got back from a fantastic trip to Wichita, Kansas. My daughters had never seen lightning bugs. As evening approached the lawns came alive with these illuminating creatures. They had so much fun catching the little bugs in jars and once their fascination was fulfilled, they again released the creatures to continue their mating dance.

Once we returned, I decided to do some patterns for these critters and other summertime bugs. There are so many different bugs during the season, but here are a few that I put on the Glass Bug Patterns page.

The name change has happened...we are no longer C&M Auto Service of Vernon Hills, Inc. but are now Star Auto Authority. I have linked the new website there because even though it has not been finished yet, it will be soon and in the mean time, you can still go to the old site and at least get a sense for where I live...I mean work. We held a party for our clients and employees and unveiled the new name and logo over some of the best Hors D'oeuvres (from The Picknic Basket, I highly recommend them), Stella beer and an assortment of fine wines, waters and sodas (myself prefering the water which I paid for with a hurried trip to the bathroom at 2am).

Now all I need to do is figure out how to stop saying C&M when I make calls...

While I was closing the shop tonight, I saw what looked and acted like a "pneumonia" front come through and in its approaching, it appeared to consume the sun, just minding it's own business, trying to set. This is an HDR in my normal fashion...3 exposures generated in Photoshop, tone-mapped in Photomatix and then finished off in Photoshop and Lightroom before uploading.

Thanks for visiting...

What better way to show off your green thumb, or even a few faux flowers and plants if your thumbs

What better way to show off your green thumb, or even a few faux flowers and plants if your thumbs aren't quite the greenest, than decorative plant stands for both the indoors and out? And, if you live in an area with a quickly changing climate or one with harsh temperatures during the winter months, plant stands allow you to easily move the delicate greenery indoors when needed, or move to in front of the window for a bit of sunshine.

Be prepared to have plenty to choose from as plant stands can range from the small and unassuming to larger, more attention-grabbing pieces with multiple levels and intricate designs. Consider your personal taste, the specific space you plan on using the stands in, as well as the types of plants or flowers you plan on using with them before browsing through the numerous styles you'll find available.

Some of the many materials used to create plant stands include wicker, glass, wrought iron, wood, stone, marble and plastics, ensuring that there's both a color and a texture suitable for just about anyone's tastes or existing décor. Just a few of the shapes and sizes of plant stands you'll see are round, square, oval, triangular, octagonal, and rectangular.

Buying Plant Stands for the Outdoors

Besides simply providing a nice place to display plants and flowers, stands keep the plants up off of the ground, away from hungry rabbits and their friends, and they also allow for much better air circulation. If you have a smaller deck or balcony, let plant stands allow you to enjoy some of nature's most beautiful creations even if you don't have room for a full garden.

For using in the out of doors, be sure the plant stands you choose will be able to withstand the change in temperature as well as regular exposure to the elements, always following the manufacturer or seller's guidelines for the best results.

When trying to find the right plant stands for your home, deck, porch, or patio, first consider the amount of floor space you have available, and then think of the type of plants you'd like to grow or have on display. Too many stands scattered about may cause your space to look cluttered, but if you do use more than one in the same area, make sure they're either identical, or are of varying heights to add interest. Also be certain that you're using a plant stand that's large enough to accommodate the container you're using without danger of tipping over or becoming unsteady.

Consider plant stands to be yet another piece of furniture to enjoy and add beauty to your home's décor. Regardless of your style, there's a plant stand for you and both your indoor and outdoor living spaces. Also, remember that you really aren't limited to using plant stands for plant life, despite their name, as many are simply gorgeous pieces of finely crafted furniture that can be used to display treasured heirlooms, or anything else you want to be noticed and appreciated.

Larger

Have you ever been so sleepy you're just slap-happy silly? That's how I was yesterday. I've been trying to change my schedule to get up early and go to bed early but after a few days of doing the former but not the latter, I was so sleep-deprived yesterday afternoon that I just stopped making sense, even to myself.

When I get over-tired, instead of thinking, "sleep," I think I'm hungry and crave carbs (and now research is showing that sleep deprivation causes weight gain and other health risks...see here and here). So instead of eating popcorn (or going to bed at 7:00), I decided to paint these "popcorn ball flowers" (as my sister and I used to call hydrangeas when we were kids...and I thought everybody did until I Googled "popcorn ball flowers because I can never remember their real name, and discovered only recipes for making flowers out of popcorn and no references to hydrangeas!).

First I had to refill my watercolor palette because a couple weeks ago I'd washed out all the funky old paint that had been in there for too long. Some of it was getting moldy and all of it was dirty. Before refilling my palette, I did color tests of all my paints to decide which pigments I wanted to use now. I love organizing things, so this was a perfectly soothing task for a tired mind.

Finally I was ready to paint, and grabbed my homemade 6x8" sketchbook filled with hot pressed Fabriano Artistico paper, and this bouquet of hydrangeas from my yard that I'd plopped into a drinking glass the day before. Instead of starting with my usual ink drawing, I used pencil and then painted using more of an oil painting technique, starting with the darkest darks instead of the lights.

Maybe it was because I was so tired, but I had so much fun, just being playful as I painted and not worrying about the outcome. As usual I wished I'd stopped about 10 minutes sooner and someday I'll learn that "when you're 75% finished you ARE finished!" Some day....

If you'd like to know which pigments I settled on, click "Continue Reading for the details....

The colors currently in my watercolor palette are a combination of a warm and cool of each color plus an opaque and transparent of most colors, and are an attempt to have a similar palette in watercolor and oils. I use a Robert E. Wood palette with a lid.

Yesterday, I was sitting in the car waiting for my Mom, and I started tinkering with things around it. I found one of my Mom's glasses case, and opened it to find early 2008 in it--in the form of some kind of Glade car freshener. For some reason, certain scents remind me of various periods of times in the past. I think it's a funny thing we all have, the fact that we can remember the good and the bad with our senses.

You can hear or play a song that triggers memories of childhood, last summer, love, whatever. Maybe it's the notes struck, the peculiar chord progression, or maybe it's just where, when, and how you heard it again that might resurface feeling and images from your soul into your head. The sight of a building, or visual composition of people or trees might remind us of who we were, or our place in that scene during another time in your life. The taste of food is not too different from hearing things--when, where, and how you had that food during good times or bad can make you daydream for a second while the food is sacrificed for the sake of nostalgia. Holding someone else in your arms might remind you of the last time you did so, and renew memories from that last time while creating new ones for the next time you touch and feel each other for that brief moment. Maybe their scent might remind you of even more, or the scene where you embrace brings you back.

That, or we're constantly reminding ourselves in order to make new memories to go return to. We base our actions on what's went on before, what's resulted from the past; we strive to regain feelings of love and happiness, and only the right blend of our senses can do this.

I guess I'll just keep smelling and touching, giving in to our senses of nostalgia.

Over the Fourth of July weekend my wife and I took some time off and stayed at a condo in Cannon Beach, Oregon. Besides the cannon, Cannon Beach is famous for Haystack Rock, the remnants of an ancient volcano and the third tallest sea stack in the world. The condo is located on the north end of Cannon Beach between Chapman Point and Ecola Creek. The sea stacks around Cannon Beach were formed some 15 million years ago when massive fissure volcanoes erupted in what is now westerneastern Oregon and easternwestern Idaho forming the Columbia River Basalt Group a flood of lava that covered 63,000 square miles. Over the ensuing millions of years, the Pacific Ocean has been pounding away at the these ancient lava flows and only the most stubborn chunks of basalt have survived as the beautiful sea stacks off Cannon Beach.

When I got back to work I began pounding away on the remnants of some ancient GLASS bugs:

bug 38372 - 'OGStackFrame dnu #homeContext during debugger restart'

bug 38493 - 'Loading and Saving a package with lots of requiredPackages is WAAAAY TOOOO SLOOOOW'

bug 38544 - 'TransientValue holds onto too much stuff'

bug 38667 - 'Check authorization before renaming a method category'

bug 38844 - 'asOctetString inefficient in Squeak methods'

bug 38852 - 'accept in debugger puts method in wrong class'

Bug 38493 is one of the more annoying bugs in GLASS and frankly once I fixed the bug (you should see a SIGNIFICANT speedup on future loads), I decided that it was worth publishing an upate. It's hard to beat the beauty of Cannon Beach, but fixing Bug 38493 comes pretty close ... haha!

I’ve published GLASS-dkh.119 (2.2.5) and GLASS.230-dkh.150 (2.3.0 or 1.0beta9). These two versions should be used with GemStone-dkh.283 (Squeak). All three of the versions can be found in the GLASS project on GemSource. If you decide to upgrade to these versions, first load the version on the GemStone-side, commit and logout. Load GemStone-dkh.283 into your Squeak image, then save and restart your Squeak image.

If you are running with a version of the GLASS package that is earlier than GLASS-dkh.118 or GLASS.230-dkh.146, then you need to follow these instructions first.

We have seen a couple of bugs in the server itself that are related to Continuations, so we plan on publishing a new version of the appliance in a couple of weeks once we've got stable fixes for the bugs (hopefully before ESUG).

Concept and Content

The design of the mural was created by Ginny Sykes. Ideas developed through a charrette with After School Matters students were incorporated into the design with modifications by the artist.

Macquarie Corporation requested a theme with international interest for the airport mural. Water is the unifying thematic element presenting many possibilities for interpretation and design work. It serves as a connective tissue that literally links us across continents and between cities, towns, and rural areas, or separates us, depending on the interpretation. A powerful metaphor and symbol for rebirth and rejuvenation, water is used in rituals and ceremonies both public and private in many cultures and across time. Water is literally something we can not live without. It forms most of our corporeal content and is essential for all living things. Relating it to the function of an international airport, nearly all flights out of O'Hare International airport must cross over large bodies of water.

There is an ecological subtext: we stand at a crossroads as human beings in our care of the earth; water will be a defining element in our survival as a species. How we attend to this precious commodity is one of the most important issues of our time. Politically, water may well supersede oil as an important commodity; this is already happening in many parts of the world. With global warming, changes in the topography and weather patterns are already occurring. Water is a large part of this change as has been seen by the effects of tsunamis, hurricanes, and storms of increased intensity and disappearing shorelines. My design goal was to present multiple perspectives through a poetic narrative that would hint at the questions surrounding water.

Narrative of the Design

Water moves across the narrative. The work begins (reading from left to right) with two fragments of overlapping puzzle pieces and two oversized, overlapping pools of water. Into the larger pool a ceramic drop of water falls and creates a ripple effect. The water flows behind a huge orchid that is flanked on the right by three allium bulbs. Two ceramic water drops lie on the petals of the orchid.

To the right of the allium there is a mountainous or island like land mass in the background at the horizon. The image moves the viewer’s vision from a close up to distant perspective. A large body of water loosely reflects the land mass. This view is bracketed by the allium bulbs on the left and the figure of a girl on the right who turns to looks through a telescope into the distance. Reflections in the water connect her to the flowers, water and land in the distance, as well as to the shore on which she stands, implied but not seen by the yellow shadow/reflections of her dress and body that angle diagonally back toward the upper left. To her right, a series of transformations proceed, beginning with a line that travels from the left (the water) around and through her torso until it becomes several other images: These lines represent wind, waves and a kind of magnetic, imaginative energy that begins to simultaneously turn into and release birds in flight. She is the catalyst for the transformations that proceed from and through her.

Waves metamorphose into birds and back into puzzle pieces completing the right side of the composition with both interlocking puzzle sections and a free floating puzzle piece on the extreme right. The largest puzzle piece has within it an image of water meeting the shore; it overlaps a design that references an African style of patterning found on mud cloth. Both sides of the mural have open edges that allow the images to release into the surrounding site and imply an open end to the social and political discussion about water and its central position in our lives. Photos above by Dorothy Perry
