Blij dat iemand het woordje 'gezond' tussen haakjes gezet heeft. Want ondanks onze privé-dierentuin kun je de buitenlucht hier bezwaarlijk als gezond omschrijven. Zo heeft het vlakbij gelegen meetpunt van de Intergewestelijke Cel voor het Leefmilieu in Haren dit jaar al 46 dagen genoteerd waarbij de grens van 50 µg/m³ fijn stof in de lucht overschreden werd. Dat zet Haren op een 'mooie' tweede plaats in het Belgisch klassement. Slechts één meetpunt doet het met 48 dagen nog slechter: Roeselare. Een mens zou bijna (ongezonde) conclusies durven trekken ;-)

The baseball season is winding down and talk is brewing on who should win the CY Young, MVP, Manager of the Year, Comeback Player of the Year, all that good stuff. You look at the NL Cy Young and you figure it's gotta be Brandon Webb- a guy who started the year with win after win and has been very solid all year despite the Diamondbacks inconsistency. Webb probably only needs 2 pitches to get by because of his powerful sinker, but he throws in a few others just to fool hitters a little more. Could you imagine if the D-backs were good all year? Webb could have 21 wins by now and with that many it would rule out anyone else from Cy Young candidacy. But as it turns out, your team performance somewhat affects individual achievement awards.

Then there's Dan Haren, Edinson Volquez, Tim Lincecum, Ryan Dempster and Johan Santana- all more than deserving possible candidates for NL Cy Young award. Oh yeah, and don't forget that CC Sabathia guy, who is infact the reigning AL cy young award winner. It would be quite something for CC to win back to back Cy Young's for 2 different leagues, and there certainly is a first time for everything. I'm not going to waste time wowing you with Sabathia's stats [ok, I guess I am....8-0, 1.60 ERA, 60 hits, 15 walks, 69 K's, 13 earned runs in 73 innings, 4 stolen bases allowed, 1.000 winning percentage, I can go on] but CC can pitch yah like the good lord splits yah, or something like that.

It's simply amazing for a guy who started the year off very poorly for Cleveland, began to improve, and then suddenly packed his bags and headed for Brewery town after Cleveland started their downward spiral. Some people laugh at the notion of a mid season acquisition winning a prestigious pitching award, yet many people consider CC to be more than worthy of serious candidacy. Milwaukee GM Doug Melvin would not be drooling in his ballpark over sellout crowds if it were not for Mr. Sabathia. The great thing about baseball now is that more small market teams are able to acquire players midseason to make playoff pushes. Revenue sharing, where would we be without you?

Many people may not make up their minds about who should win Cy Young until around playoff time or even after the playoffs, because (unfair as it may be) playoff success is often taken into account when it's time to dish out the awards. In my opinion, that shouldn't always be the case. Guys like Tim Lincecum and Cliff Lee and Justin Duchscherer play for bad teams, but on a personal level are performing incredibly and could be an ace of a pitching staff for many teams.  So let's duke it out folks, does CC deserve to be placed in the same category as Lincecum or Webb or any other NL top pitchers? Is there more that CC has to do to prove to the baseball world that he is an amazing pitcher who seems to be more successful in the NL than AL? Where does CC rank among major midseason acquisitions in the history of baseball?

When Billy Beane made his usual pitcher for prospects deal with Dan Haren, he probably figured the 27-year old right hander would follow the Barry Zito or Mark Mulder mold faster than he would perform like Tim Hudson. It turns out, Haren has done better than all three with his new team, and the Arizona Diamondbacks have rewarded their No. 2 starter with a contract extension.

The new contract runs four years and with a club option for the 2013 season. The extension totals $44.75 million and will see Haren earn $7.5 million next season, $8.5 million in 2010 and $12.75 million in 2011 and 2012. The 2013 option is worth $12 million, bringing the potential total to $56.75 million over five years. If Arizona wishes to decline the option year, they hold a $3.5 million buyout opportunity.

In today's baseball market, numbers like that can be considered a steal considering his tremendous 12-5 season with a 2.75 ERA and 142 strikeouts through 23 starts. He has combined wit Brandon Webb (15-4) to form perhaps the strongest 1-2 starting rotation punch in the entire league. And he's played a crucial role in getting the Diamondbacks to the top of the NL West, which they currently hold by 1.5 games over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Even more than just holding onto a very strong pitcher at a decent price, the Diamondbacks are retaining somebody who loves playing in Arizona.

"I knew I'd like it here, but I didn't know I'd like it this much," Haren said. "A lot of these guys are going to be around for a while and I'll be one of them. I just couldn't be happier."

One of those players Haren hopes will be around for a long time is the man that comes before him in the rotation - the ace, Brandon Webb. Like Haren's old deal, Webb's current contract comes to an end in 2009 with a team option in 2010, paying him $6.5 million and $8.5 million during those years, respectively. There isn't any progress in negotiations, as the AP reports talks have been "tabled."

As the Diamondbacks have become accustomed to, the 29-year old Webb has been an extraordinary ace. He has 15 wins with a 3.04 ERA and 130 strikeouts through 23 starts this season. The 2006 NL Cy Young Award winner is well on his way to the first 20-win campaign of his career and has earned the right to a new deal worth more money than he's set to earn on his current contract.

With a 1-2 punch as effective as Webb and Haren rather difficult to find around the Majors, keeping them together over the long haul would serve the Diamonbacks very well. Both players are in their prime and appear content with taking less money than what would be available in two years on the free agent market. With Haren locked up, it's imperative Arizona gets to work on doing the same thing with Webb.

El paso del tiempo se tornaba pastoso en la comunidad. Los días eran calcados y las horas parecían harina en agua, espesadas sobre un colador de metal que hacia las veces de reloj. Las oportunidades de Yurina para mostrarse frente al Sultán iban sucediendo sin resultado alguno, a lo sumo alguna mirada llorosa que no recibía ni pañuelo en forma de interés. Cansada de pensar la forma de llamar la atención del Sultán, Yurina decidió que para su próximo encuentro su cara sería la más triste del mundo, usaría la cara más inexpresiva que podía fingir, la cara de la muerta más bella de la comunidad. Pasados unos días, llegó la oportunidad. El día levantó triste, llovía y el agua sobre el suelo dejaba un olor a miga de pan recién horneado pero húmedo. Las mujeres de servicio se encargaban de hornearlo cada día y su olor, al verse mezclado con el de la lluvia, era triste y por momentos placentero. Yurina, ajena al olor premonitorio, entró en la sala con cara de muerta, con la cara de una mujer ilusionada que acaba de recibir una mala noticia. Los pies descalzos empezaron su recorrido, como siempre, como el comienzo de una pausada danza ritual. Las telas de colores de las vestimentas del Sultán iban cambiando las sombras a cada zancada. Yurina, con su cabeza mirando al suelo, esperaba sentir la sombra cerca para en ese momento levantar la cabeza; quería mostrar su rostro de repente, por sorpresa, esperando sorprender de la misma manera del que sabe que no esperan verle muerto y mira con cara de cadáver. El Sultán se detuvo frente a ella, cesó el olor a agua de lluvia y un olor a pan recién horneado entró por la puerta. Después de unos segundos, Yurina levantó la cabeza. Sitdo, el Sultán miró a esa aparición fantasmal que emergía delante de sus ojos y al cabo de unos segundos reanudó su camino. Cuando parecía que esa mirada terrorífica había provocado su huída definitiva, se dejó llevar por una atracción compasiva, giró la cabeza y con la misma atracción del que sabe que amar a un muerto es algo único e irrepetible, posó su mano sobre el hombro de Yurina y cuando la hubo quitado miró a una mujer de servicio para indicar que Yurina era la elegida. De ahí al final del día en la comunidad se mantuvo el olor a pan tierno.

De aquel encuentro entre Sitdo y Yurina nació Gain, un niño hermoso de pelo negro. Sitdo se había quedado prendado aquella tarde de olor a pan tierno, sus sentidos más crueles se vieron transformados por el olor o quién sabe por qué, pero Yurina no solo consiguió al hijo que deseaba, sino también casarse, unos meses antes del alumbramiento, con el Sultán. Era la séptima esposa en jerarquía, la última hasta ese momento, pero en cambio, en cariño era primeriza.
Una tarde, mientras cambiaban el pañal al niño, se acercó el Sultán a ver cómo estaba Gain. "No llora", dijo sorprendido, "Tiene casi tres semanas y apenas abre bien la boca para amamantar". Yurina no contestó, y haciéndose cómplice de su hijo cerró la boca, le vistió de manera apresurada y se fue al dormitorio. El niño apenas podía abrir la boca, sufría algún tipo de atrofia en su mandíbula. No le impedía amamantar pero sí llorar o hablar cuando llegara el momento. El llanto interior de su madre se escuchaba por vez primera entre muros. El Sultán, cuando supo la verdad de boca de Yurina, no tuvo más remedio que comunicar a su esposa que mientras nadie se diera cuenta del defecto del niño podrían seguir criándolo, pero cuando pronunciara sus primeras palabras tendrían que abandonarlo a su suerte. La debilidad no tenía cabida en la comunidad, y menos si se cebaba con la estirpe que la gobernaba. Intentar su aceptación supondría un gesto de debilidad que podría ser utilizado por sus enemigos para asesinar a su padre.
El niño fue creciendo y cuando tuvo una edad en la que los sonidos guturales eran inteligibles e incompresibles para su edad, iba a cumplir apenas diez años, una noche oscura y con olor a nada, a cielo y estrellas, fue abandonado en una aldea cercana. Deambuló por las cercanías de la aldea, emitiendo sonidos que bien parecían aullidos de un lobezno, y, al notarse sumamente cansando de gritar, decidió pasar la noche bajo una higuera. Al despertar se encontró en su cara a un hombre y a su caballo. Era un panadero de los alrededores. No supieron comunicarse, hubo preguntas sin respuesta, ruidos y gestos que llegaron a apenar tanto a aquel hombre que, haciendo un gesto de misericordia, decidió subir al niño a lomos de la bestia.
Yurina no había olvidado a su hijo. Unos días antes de abandonarlo había hablado con su marido para ver de qué manera podrían saber de su hijo sin que nadie se diera cuenta. Decidieron que enviarían a un emisario la misma noche del abandono, un eunuco conocido de Yurina, para que siguiera al niño por la noche y así saber dónde y con quién acababa su hijo. El futuro del niño lobezno estaba en juego.
El panadero misericordioso, mientras el niño dormía en el establo, ya estaba pensando la manera de desprenderse de él. No tenía apenas trabajo y el poco pan que horneaba no era suficiente para mantenerlos a ambos. Al despertar el niño, el panadero lo cogió de la mano y se dispuso a colocar las riendas de su caballo. Quería alejarlo de su casa y devolverlo al mismo lugar donde lo encontró. Habían avanzado apenas unos metros cuando les detuvo el emisario del Sultán. "Tengo que darle un mensaje de Sitdo, el Sultán de la comunidad". El panadero se dejó caer del caballo al escuchar la frase y, con una mirada atenta, esperó que continuara hablando. El mensaje partía con una petición de amparo para con el niño y terminaba con una recompensa a cambio. El Sultán garantizaba que compraría todo el pan que él horneaba, hasta el punto de que toda la comunidad comería pan de su horno. El negocio se multiplicaría por 100 para aquel hombre. Solo tenía que enseñar el oficio a Gian y construir un nuevo horno. Gian, para aquel hombre, era un regalo caído del cielo, de un cielo ruidoso por culpa de los sonidos que Gian emitía.
Pasaron los años, Gian aprendió un oficio y creció feliz. Sus padres sabían de él, aunque no podían verse. Si Gian aparecía por la comunidad para entregar el pan, sería reconocido. El panadero se encargaba de los repartos, mientras Gian limpiaba el horno y preparaba la masa. Cuando el carro tirado por dos caballos entraba en la comunidad, sus padres sentían que su hijo estaba cerca, no podían verle pero podían saborear el olor de la felicidad, el olor a pan tierno recién horneado.

As the Hot Stove League season winds down and gives way to the annual rebirth that is spring training, writers start to assess who the winners and losers were in the off-season. I’m not going to do that, but if I were to, I think I’d be putting a team in the winner’s column with a bullet that most others would rank as losers. That team is the Oakland Athletics.

But wait, you say, the A’s traded their best pitcher and their best position player for a bunch of guys we’ve never heard of. How can that be a win for the A’s? It can be and it was, but to understand it, you have to step back and do a sober analysis of where the A’s were at the end of 2007.

Coming off their first ever playoff victory in 2006, the ’07 A’s rolled the dice with a lot of iffy and unhealthy players and it came up snake eyes, a 76-86 record, a third place finish and the first losing season for the franchise since 1998. In and of itself, that’s no reason to panic. Teams have down years where the injury bug and a few problems dog them down.

But this team had no future. Several players who were supposed to form the core of the A’s franchise for years had faltered. Eric Chavez’s back problems have led to spiraling production three years in a row and it doesn’t look like he is physically capable of being the player he once promised to be, or even once was. Rich Harden had the best stuff of any pitcher the A’s have developed in recent years, but after three years of constant injury, it is clear he cannot be relied on. Bobby Crosby has proven not only to be unhealthy, but also not to be anywhere near the player, offensively or defensively, that the A”s thought he would be when they let Miguel Tejada walk.

Couple those things with several poor drafts which left the A’s once-envied minor league system with only a few prospects who had any sort of major-league future, and you start to see what Billy Beane saw. Sure, with guys like Nick Swisher, Dan Haren, Joe Blanton, Huston Street, Travis Buck and Daric Barton they had the core of a decent team, and a few shrewd moves and lucky breaks could put them on the outside track for wild card contention for a few years.

But the simple fact was they had no chance to put together a team that was a legitimate contender within the next few years. Most GMs would flail about, finding a few players to plug in who could help boost the team above .500. And, if the A’s played in the National League, where the best teams are not nearly as good as the best of the AL, Beane might have done that. But if he had, that would have been because he would have had sufficient resources to field a team that could have challenged the best in the league.

The resources to do that in the AL, where you not only have the huge financial powerhouses in the Bronx and Boston, but also have teams in Los Angeles, Cleveland and Detroit that are loaded for bear for the next few years, the best Beane could have done was make Oakland a decent, scrappy team that might, might sneak into the playoffs once or twice if the big boys faltered. That’s not what Beane tries to do. Despite the fiscal limitations under which he works, Beane’s goal is to build a legitimate contender, one that, like the teams from 2001-3 and 2006, stacked up well against the bullies from the East.

The trades of Haren, Swisher and Mark Kotsay had nothing to do with the A’s being a low-budget team, as some think. Haren will make $4 million 2008 and $5.5 million in 2009, and has a club option for $6.75 million in 2010. Those are bargain-basement prices for a pitcher of Haren’s caliber. Swisher will make $3.5 million in ’08, $5.3 million in ’09, $6.75 million in ’10 and $9 million in ’11. Again, that is an eminently affordable contract, even for the A’s (who, incidentally, are now in baseball’s lower-middle-class in any case).

What Beane recognized was that he had a choice—be a decent team for the next few years and probably miss the playoffs in all or most of them or try to rebuild his system and work on building a legitimate contender for the 20-teens decade. Most GMs would choose the former, but then most GMs have neither the vision nor the job security that Beane has.

I admit I wasn’t wild about the package the A’s got for Swisher. The potential gem in the deal is Fautino De Los Santos, a 22-year old right-hander from the Dominican Republic who just completed his first year of professional ball in the US. The kid has absolutely filthy stuff, as evidenced by his 153 strikeouts in only 122 innings last year. But his control needs work, and while he was unhittable in low-A last year (he surrendered almost exactly 0.5 hits per inning), he was also pretty old for that level. He looked more human, though he was still quite good, at high-A, and has a good deal of work to do before he can compete in the bigs. Still, he’s on a fast track and if his development continues at this pace, he could well make this deal worthwhile all by himself. But young pitching is always a gamble.

Ryan Sweeney is a 23-year old outfielder who was once considered a pretty good prospect, but whose bat just hasn’t developed. He can play all three outfield positions, but that’s his best selling point unless his hitting takes a big step forward. He has demonstrated decent patience and makes consistent contact, but he is neither a .300-type hitter nor has he shown significant power. He doesn’t have much speed either, and his track record screams Triple-A lifer. We’ll see if the A’s can coax more than that out of him, but it’s not promising.

Gio Gonzalez has now been traded three times and is only 22. He’s a power lefty with control issues. He did a good deal better in his second year at AA in ’07 than he did in his first. His upside is a solid #3 starter in the majors. He’ll certainly get his fair shot, as hard-throwing lefties are a valued commodity and, if it all works out, he could be a solid starter for years for the A’s, but he has little star potential.

It seems like the A’s could have gotten more for Swisher, a young outfielder who, while not a great glove man anywhere in the outfield, can still handle all three outfield slots acceptably (he’s not really an everyday centerfielder, but he can certainly play there in a pinch without embarrassing himself). But the test of such trades, ultimately, comes a few years down the road, and there’s every possibility that this will look like a pretty good one for the A’s at that point.

The Haren deal, on the other hand, was a coup. Chris Carter, 21, is a hulking slugger who can’t field very well, but whose bat could well carry him to significant major league career. Aaron Cunningham, 22, can play all three outfield positions fairly well, doesn’t have much power, but is a good contact hitter and projects as a solid fourth outfielder. Dana Eveland, 24, and Greg Smith, 24, are both major-league-ready lefties who project as back of the rotation starters. But the two prizes in the deal were Brett Anderson and Carlos Gonzalez.

Anderson, only 20, is yet another left-hander (which itself really adds some spice to this trade for Oakland) but he projects more as a #2 starter. He doesn’t have a great fastball, but his curve is said to be devastating. Scouts say he has great command a great feel for pitching. Sounds a lot like a lefty A’s fans knew well before he crossed the Bay.

Gonzalez, 22, still has some refinement work to do, but has a very high ceiling to his potential. He plays centerfield right now, but it’s not clear he can play there in the majors. He’s shown very good power, but he is not a disciplined hitter and is easily fooled with breaking balls. He creams fastballs, though, and could be a decent hitter for average, but he needs to walk more and learn to lay off the breaking stuff. If he does, he’s an all-star.

That’s a heckuva swag, a good measure more than the Twins got for Johan Santana, more than the marlins got for Miguel Cabrera and Dontrelle Willis (at least when you take into account that the Fish had to trade two marketable commodities for their package) and arguably a bit more even than the Orioles got for Erik Bedard.

And they got that for Haren, a pitcher who is not of the same caliber as Bedard, much less Santana. Haren may be one of the most overrated players in the game today. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a fine pitcher, a solid #2 starter, but he’s not a #1 and his 2007 season, which got everyone all agog, was not quite as good as it appeared.

Haren is a very durable innings-muncher. Last year, his strikeouts were up only very slightly, his walks down very slightly. His homeruns allowed were down more significantly, but, at 24 given up, nothing superstarish. I believe that 2007 was as good as Haren will get, and, when that was combined with a very good defense behind him and a very forgiving ballpark both at home and in two of the three other parks in his division, he became a Cy Young candidate.

Still, even at that, he was the 6th best pitcher in the AL, behind CC Sabathia, Fausto Carmona, Josh Beckett, Santana and Bedard. The 15 unearned runs he surrendered (a very high number) mostly happened early and helped him to the ERA lead in the first half. His “fade” in the second half was as much the result of more of the runs he gave up being earned as anything else.

Beane sold high on both of these players, correctly seeing that the market was placing a premium value on young players signed through their arbitration years to affordable contracts. And in so doing, he rebuilt a largely barren minor league system.

Beane would not settle for putting together a decent but unspectacular team. He is interested in building a winner. He looked at what he had and made the right call. Of course, it may not work out; at the time, signing Eric Chavez long term and letting Miguel Tejada walk away was the right move. Baseball is harsh—making the right move doesn’t always work.

But Beane did what he had to do, what few other GMs would have the nerve to do. And, once again, he leveraged the market as best he could to maximize the return for his team. What more a GM can do, I can’t imagine, and that’s why the A’s are winners this winter. They actually have enough still with the club to top .500, though I strongly suspect that Joe Blanton and Huston Street will be elsewhere by August, meaning the A’s will probably fall short of the standard of mediocrity. But they weren’t going to have much of a present anyway, and now they have a much brighter future. That sounds like a good winter to me.

Collega J. ziet niets biezonders aan mijn haar, maar hij is dan ook een man. Straks zal ik een second opinion proberen te verkrijgen bij Schattie. Dat is ook een man, maar tegelijk wetenschappelijk onderlegd en zal me dus nauwkeurig onderzoeken op vergrijzing (hoop ik). Voorlopig kan ik dus nog even doen alsof er niets aan de hand is. Het was gewoon de weerkaatsing van het licht, niet? (Maar wie fop ik hier eigenlijk: dat ene hard uitgetrokken grijze, bijna WITTE haartje heb ik als bewijsmateriaal bewaard tussen mijn agenda... Het is een verloren zaak, second opinion of niet).

Some notes:

1. I was fairly happy with my squad.   As always, I focused on offense early, taking Holliday, Ortiz, Morneau, Hafner, Cano, Bay, and Figgins with my first 7 picks, before shifiting my attention to pitching, and I was able to put together a very solid rotation (Haren, Smoltz, Cain, Liriano, Schilling, Snell, Pettitte, Blanton) 
2. Getting Wagner in the 9 and Mariano in 11 round I thought were great value picks.  They are not in the top 4 closers(Putz, Papelbon, KRod, Nathan) but both are on very good teams who should win a lot a games, and thus get plenty of save opps)
3. Normally, I'm not a big Figgins guy, but I basically ignored speed in the early rounds, so I needed to get a specialist.  Getting him the 7th was a great value.  Let's also not forget he did hit .330 last year.
4. Someone else got Byrnes in the 7th, right before I took Figgins.  I think that was the steal of this draft.  He should go before Chris B Young (which was not the case here)
5. I'm not as high on him as some others (due to his ballpark, lineup, inconsistency) but Adrian Gonzalez at the end of the 9th round was a nice pick too.
6. I got some flak for taking Liriano in the 13th, but I am fine with gambling on my #4 SP with #1 upside there.
7. Someone took Russell Martin before V-Mart.  I don't like that.  I know Martin runs, but it's not like he is Vince Coleman.  V-Mart is better.
8. I was surprised to see Peavy go before Johan, but in speaking with others in the draft room, there were a lot of people who agreed.   That's fine.  They are all wrong though.

Ik stond vandaag bij de slager, en toen zei de slager tegen de mevrouw naast mij: mag uw dochtertje een plakje worst?

Nee, grapje. Toch is het maar goed dat het blok is, en dat ik mij de komende maand niet aan de buitenwereld hoef te tonen. Ik hoop dat mijn kapsel tegen die tijd enigzins is genormaliseerd en zich heeft aangepast aan mijn daadwerkelijke leeftijd. Ik zet dus ook vooral geen foto op mijn blog. En de volgende keer ga ik weer naar de kapper.

In speaking to another team in my league, I was offered either Nick Markakis or Troy Tulowitzki for Bedard.  This other team currently has Hamels as their C keeper, and views Bedard as an upgrade on him (not Haren though).  They are keeping Justin Verlander as their D and BJ Upton as their E, which makes these guys expendable.

My teammate Ari is away for the next few days, so I sent him this email explaining why I think we should make the deal.  I'd love to hear what others think.

Here's why I think we should trade Bedard for Tulo:

We still have Haren who is at worst a tick lower than Bedard, and we can't keep both.   You could actually make the case that Haren may be more valuable. Obviously Bedard had a nice edge in K's last year, but at 29 on opening day, has never thrown more than 196 innings (2006) and has spent at least 1 month on the DL in every season but 1 (2006).  Haren, 27 on opening day, has thrown at least 217 innings the last three years and has never been on the DL.  Bedard MAY be the better pitcher, but Haren is DEFINITELY younger and healthier.  They are really fairly equal, so really this deal boils down to whether you'd rather have Tulo or Joba/ Wang.

In NO scratch draft for 2008 would I EVER select Joba or Wang over Tulo.  In a regular draft this year, Tulo is probably going in the 4th/5th round (Mock Draft Central current ADP is 45).  I would probably even select Tulo before I'd take Bedard or Haren this year.  Other than a sophomore slump, I think it is fair to assume he'll replicate his 2007 stats (.291/24/99/104/7, I can't believe we dropped him), maybe more likely than Bedard or Haren replicating their 2007 numbers. 

It's MUCH more likely that Tulo replicates than Joba putting up huge numbers.  They are not gonna be careful not to overwork him and there is also a chance that he pitches out of the pen, in which case he is 100% worthless to us (or anyone else, in a trade).  Wang only gives 3 stats (only wins is excellent), so it impossible for him to put up huge numbers. If a starter and we didn't make this trade I say, for sure, Joba over Wang (for now)

So you ask what about Tulo vs. Markakis, as both can be had for the same price?

I'd predict that Markakis should probably replicate his numbers from 2007 as well (.300/23/117/97/18), with upside.

Say they both replicate their 2007 numbers, I'd prefer Tulowitzki, due mainly to the position scarcity.

There are, at best, two other SS I'd rather have than Tulo going back into our draft.  Barring unpredictable significant injury prior to keeper declaration, Reyes, Rollins, and Hanley are all being kept.  Jeter is back in, Guillen maybe.  Who else is there?  Tejada?  Young? Peralta? Hardy? Furcal? Renteria? Lugo? Orlando Cabrera? I'll take Tulo way before any of them.  I don't think I'm forgetting anyone.  Bobby Crosby?

What about OF of Markakis' caliber? (By "caliber," of course, I refer to both the size of their gun barrels and the high quality of their characters... Two meanings... caliber... it's a homonym... Forget it.)  We are pretty certain (again barring unpredictable major injuries or trades) that Holliday (Summers is keeping Pujols), Sizemore (Lazy Bags are keeping Wright), Beltran (us), Vlad (sleeper is keeping Utley) so that's four I'd rather have than him right there.  I'm sure there also another 5-10 of similar value I'm not mentioning.

I almost think we should pull the trigger right away before they catch on and maybe decide to keep him over Verlander (to be henceforth referred to as J-Verl).  Same as with Bedard and Haren, I'd probably take Tulo in the 4th/5th round over J-Verl in a scratch draft.

Also, let's not forget how building our team around offense worked out for us last year. Let's just say we did the trade for Tulo, our offensive core would be incredible (projections in parentheses.  A-Rod (.300/45/120/120/20), Ichiro (.325/6/70/100/35, Tulo (.290/20/90/100/7), CBY (.260/25/70/80/25).

Na een lang weekend Bangkok vertrokken we gisteravond met de nachttrein naar Chiang Mai (Noord Thailand). Jos had ons trouwens vrijdag al verlaten. Hij zit inmiddels weer achter de piepers met zalm.

De rit per nachttrein was niet onaangenaam. Als je dit nog nooit hebt meegemaakt is het zelfs wel interessant. Een "delegatie" van drie personen komt de plaatsbewijzen controleren. De hoofdconducteur straalt met al zijn medailles, kettingen, ringen en insignes een boel gezag uit. Ook op de omroepinstallatie wordt niet bezuinigd: dezelfde hoofdconducteur komt even later met een megafoon in de coupe staan om het reisschema voor te dragen. Heel bijzonder. Te meer omdat vrouwlief eerst de draak steekt met de conducteur (deze moet er overigens zelf ook hartelijk om lachen). 'Alo, Alo, SA WA DEE KAAAAAAA'.

Na een uurtje worden de bedden opgemaakt door een andere beambte. En waarempel, dat ligt helemaal niet slecht. Overigens hebben we geen cougette, maar een gewone coupe, het hele rijtuig heeft slaapplekken aan weerskanten van het gangpad. Iedere slaapplek is voorzien van een gordijntje, dus iedereen heeft iets of wat privacy.

Na een redelijke nachtrust, een bijzonder onsmakelijk ontbijt en een treinreis van 14 uur, zijn we vanochtend aangekomen in Chiang Mai. Daar hebben we intrek genomen in een guesthouse voor 200 bath per nacht (€ 4). Daarbij inbegrepen gratis internet en fietsenleen (een fiets huren kost normaal 50 bath per dag). Een koopje dus, zeker omdat het volgens onze reisgids 'heel nette kamers en sanitair' heeft.

Maar heel gezellig is het niet, met zo'n TL balk aan het plafond. En ook dat 'hele nette' is ver te zoeken. Al begrijpt de eigenaresse zelf eigenlijk niet goed waarom ze niet meer in de reisgids van 2007 vermeld wordt ;-) Maargoed, het voldoet voor een nachtje. Morgen gaan we weer verder zoeken naar een proper en fris alternatief. Zonder 1,5 kilo haren die ik eerst uit het putje moet verwijderen... En daarvoor willen we best een euro meer betalen hoor! ;-)

GJ en ik werden zo enthousiast dat we besloten meteen vandaag maar samen naar de kapper te gaan, en deze carte blanche te geven. Ik ben meestal nogal huiverig om mijn lange haar prijs te geven, maar nu ik die vriendin gezien heb, ben ik vol vertrouwen. GJ's haar hangt ook zo ongeveer op zijn schouders, dus we gaan beiden voor een grote beurt. Ik ben verschrikkelijk nieuwsgierig en kan bijna niet wachten om te gaan.

Nu nog een pot verf er tegenaan, en ik ben volledig winterproof. De kapster was geweldig en begreep precies wat ik wilde. Dank aan Olivier Dachkin aan het Fochplein. Dus niet die andere dichter bij het station in de Bondgenotenlaan. Gouden tip voor iedereen die hip haar wil. Ik ben echt heel blij, al lijk ik wel erg jong. Maar ik ren nu dus de hele dag naar de spiegel om te kijken hoe leuk het is. GJ's kapsel zie je niet zo goed, maar die heeft een beetje een emolokje. Niet dat hij nu emo is, want met blond haar valt dat toch niet op.

Anna Keller (1879-1962)

Der höchste Kleinbasler Ehrentag «Vogel Gryff» ist ein Feiertag. Ein beweglicher Feiertag. Der Vorsitz wird im Turnus von drei Jahren jeweils im Januar von einer der drei Ehrengesellschaften übernommen. Dies ist beim Rebhaus der 13. Januar, beim Hären der 20. Januar und beim Greifen der 27. Januar. Der «Vogel Gryff» wird durch diese drei Ehrengesellschaften, die oft auch kurz «3 E» genannt werden, durchgeführt. Die feierlichen Auftritte der Wappenhalter sind seit dem 16. Jahrhundert belegt. Die Spuren der drei Ehrengesellschaften reichen bis ins frühe 14. Jahrhundert zurück.

Wer den Volksbrauch noch nie erlebt habt, wundert sich an diesem Tag angesichts der vielen dunkel gekleideten Herren, die einem begegnen, ob der Böllerschüsse und Trommelklänge, die zu hören sind und der merkwürdigen Gestalt, die auf einem Floss den Rhein herunter geschwommen kommt. Auf der Strasse lachende Kindergesichter mit einem «Schnägg» (Hefegebäck) in der Hand und ernsthafte Repräsentanten der Stadt, welche die Tänze des «Wilde Maa» würdig abnehmen, indem sie ihren Hut lüften, während die «Ueli» unter den Schaulustigen umhergehen und um eine Spende bitten.
«Vogel Gryff» (Greif, Fabelwesen zwischen Löwe und Adler), «Wild Maa» (Wilder Mann) und «Leu» (oder «Lai», baseldeutsch für Löwe) begehen gemeinsam mit drei Tambouren, drei Bannerherren und vier «Ueli» das Kleinbasel. Die drei Figuren und der «Ueli» sind Namensgeber für die vier Basler Fähren. An vorgeschriebenen Stationen zeigen sie ihre einstudierten Tänze, deren Choreographie von Generation zu Generation weitergegeben werden. Die «Ueli» sind Narrengestalten, welche die Aufgabe haben, möglichst viel Geld zu sammeln. Dazu schütteln sie ihre Sammelbüchsen so, dass es scheppert. Der Erlös kommt Bedürftigen zu Gute – und zwar Kleinbasler Bedürftigen, indem nur hier ansässige Sozialwerke unterstützt werden. Der «Vogel Gryff» ist nämlich ein Fest, das dem Stadtteil gegenüber dem Münster vorbehalten ist.

Das Brauchtum geht zurück auf das Jahr 1392, als sich die beiden Stadtteile Kleinbasel und Grossbasel zusammentaten und damit die Trennung durch den Rhein überwanden. Mit dem Brückenschlag um das Jahr 1225 konnte sich die «mindere Stadt», wie sie von hochnäsigen Grossbaslern genannt wurde, erst richtig entwickeln. Selbstbewusst bildete die kleinere Stadthälfte ein eigenes Rat- und Richthaus, da, wo heute das Café Spitz steht.

Seinen Namen hat das Haus übrigens wegen seiner Spitze auf dem Dach. Erbaut wurde es 1838–40 von Amadeus Merian (1808–89) für die drei Ehrengesellschaften Kleinbasels als gemeinsames Gesellschaftshaus anstelle des spätmittelalterlichen Richthauses. In der Nacht vom 13. auf den 14. April 1969 brannte das Traditionshaus fast vollständig nieder und wurde in der Folge detailgenau wieder aufgebaut.

Die drei Gesellschaften aber waren – und sind bis heute – keine Zünfte, denn sie vereinigen keine Berufsleute bestimmter Gewerbe. Sie hatten seit jeher eher den Charakter von Quartiergesellschaften.
Der Tagesablauf beim «Vogel Gryff» ist fast militärisch genau durchorganisiert. So verwundert es nicht, dass man bei diesem Brauchtum Wurzeln in der Zurschaustellung von Wehrhaftigkeit, bzw. in der jährlichen Waffenmusterung ausmachen kann. Die Gesellschaftsgenossen hatten nämlich auch für die Sicherheit ihrer Stadt im Kleinbasel zu sorgen. Sie leisteten Dienste als Wach- und Feuerwehrleute und hatten die Türme und Mauern in Stand zu halten.
Nach vollendetem 14. Lebensjahr, ab 1514 nach dem 16. Geburtstag, wurden die Burschen militär- und wachpflichtig und blieben es bis ins vorgerückte Alter, wie der Festschrift «600 Joor Glai- und Grossbasel zämme» aus dem Jahr 1992 von Ernst Ritter zu entnehmen ist.

Diese Musterungen, welche bis 1838 durch jede der drei Gesellschaften selber durchgeführt wurden, endeten jeweils mit einem Marsch durch das Kleinbasel und einer gemeinsamen Mahlzeit. Voraussetzung für den Beitritt zu einer der Ehrengesellschaften ist übrigens noch heute ein Wohnsitz entweder im Kleinbasel oder dann im übrigen Kanton, in diesem Fall jedoch mit bedeutsamem Grundeigentum im Kleinbasler Stadtteil. Die ausschliesslich männlichen Bewerber müssen ausserdem das 18. Lebensjahr erreicht haben, das Basler Bürgerrecht und einen guten Leumund vorweisen können.

Wenn es der Wasserstand des Rheins erlaubt, beginnt das Fest jeweils um 10.30 Uhr mit der Rheinfahrt des Wilden Mannes. Der Wilde Mann schifft sich traditionell an einer unüberbauten Partie des Rheinufers ein. Dies war bis ins 19. Jahrhundert die Baarmatte ausserhalb der Kleinbasler Stadtmauer beim Waisenhaus. Nach dem Bau der Wettsteinbrücke 1878/79 verlegte man die Stelle rheinaufwärts zum Landgut Rosengarten an der heutigen Grenzacherstrasse 106. Als nächste Stelle der Wässerung kam später die Solitude der Familie Hoffmann (ein Park bei der Chemiefirma Hoffmann-LaRoche) in Gebrauch. Heute ist der «Horst», ein Fischergalgenhäuschen unterhalb des Kraftwerkes Birsfelden, Ausgangspunkt der Flossfahrt.
Bei der Talfahrt vollführt der Wilde Mann seine Tänze auf einem Floss und wird durch Trommelrhythmen und zwar dem «Rhy-ab-Marsch» und mit Böllerschüssen begleitet. Er achtet darauf, bei dieser Flossfahrt nur die Kleinbasler zu grüssen und den Grossbaslern am anderen Ufer den Rücken, genauer: seinen Hintern zuzukehren. Dabei folgt am Kleinbasler Ufer eine lärmende Kinderschar dem Floss. Unterhalb der Mittleren Rheinbrücke erscheinen unterdessen der Vogel Gryff und der Leu mit ihren Begleitern, den drei Tambouren und Bannerträgern, sowie den vier Narrengestalten, den «Ueli», welche mit klappernden Büchsen Geld für Bedürftige sammeln. Der Vogel-Gryff und der Leu erscheinen oberhalb der Mittleren Brücke, beim Wild-Ma-Gässli, zusammen mit einem Tambour und einem Bannerherr – zwei weitere Tambouren und Bannerherren sind beim Wilden Mann auf dem Floss. Mit einem mächtigen Satz springt gegen elf Uhr der Wilde Mann an Land, nicht ohne zuvor die Tanne ausgiebig im Wasser genetzt zu haben.

Danach, um zwölf Uhr, tanzen die Ehrenzeichen vor dem Käppelijoch auf der Mittleren Rheinbrücke ihre unverkennbaren Tänze: das Vogel-Gryff-Spiel. Während dieser Vorführung, die genauestens choreographiert ist, bleibt das Hinterteil der Figuren stets Grossbasel, und damit dem Lällekönig, zugewandt. Dieser wiederum streckt von der Grossbasler Seite aus in regelmässigen Abständen seine Zunge gegen das Kleinbasel heraus.

Ab 13 Uhr finden sich die 450 Gesellschaftsbrüder der «3 E» (je 150) zu einer ausgedehnten Mahlzeit, dem Gryffemähli, im Festsaal der Basler Messe ein. Frauen sucht man übrigens vergeblich: Es handelt sich hier um eine reine Männergesellschaft – wenn man vom Servierpersonal einmal absieht. Die Herren tragen allesamt dunkle Anzüge und geben diesem Anlass damit eine besonders feierliche Note. Die Veranstaltung dauert den ganzen Nachmittag an und ist von Reden zu aktuellen politischen Themen, musikalischen Darbietungen sowie dem Besuch des Vogel-Gryff-Spiels im Saal geprägt. Mit Spannung werden auswärtig geladenen Ehrengäste erwartet, oftmals hohe Repräsentanten aus Wirtschaft und Politik. Besonders feierlich wird die Stimmung am Abend, wenn das Spiel, begleitet von 21 Knaben («Buebe») mit Steckenlaternen, Trommlern und Pfeifern der Fasnachtsclique Olympia, gefolgt von einer riesigen Menschenmenge, kreuz und quer durch Kleinbasels Altstadt zieht und, immer wieder unterbrochen von trinkfreudigen Pausen, die Wohn- oder Geschäftssitze der Herren Meister und Vorgesetzten sowie den Hof des Waisenhauses besucht. Auf dem Rundgang werden keine Tänze mehr vor dem Meister oder Vorgesetzten vorgetragen, sondern in den Restaurants zu Ehren des «Baizer» (des Wirts). Der wiederum bedankt sich mit einem offerierten Getränk – in der Regel einer Runde Bier für die Aktiven. Der Schlusstanz findet dann um ca. 22.30 Uhr im Stammhaus „Cafe Spitz“ im grossen Saal im 1. Stock statt. Der Ehrentag der Kleinbasler klingt dann in den vielen Kleinbasler Gaststätten bis in den frühen Morgen aus. Die Ehrenzeichen der «3 E» finden wir übrigens das ganze Jahr hindurch gleich unter der Mittleren Brücke unter dem ersten Bogen auf der Kleinbasler Seite im Wasser des Rheins.

Ik kwam vanmorgen onder de douche vandaan, en bekeek mijn lijzige kapsel in de spiegel. Ik dacht: nu of nooit. Ik heb de schaar gepakt en mijn haren in mooie laagjes geknipt. Gewoon schuin. Aan de voorkant een pony en naar onderen toe lang. Het was helemaal niet moeilijk. Ik schrok wel een beetje toen ik de eerste plukken in mijn handen had. Op sommige stukken is er meer als tien centimeter van mijn haar af. Volgens mij is het aan beide kanten aardig gelijk geknipt. Het is echt minstens zo goed gelukt als bij een echte kapper! Jammer genoeg heb ik geen voor/na foto's. Het was nogal een impulsieve actie.

Verder is GJ daarnet weer begonnen met roken. Hij was een maand gestopt, maar zat in de stress over z'n toetsen. Het is niet fijn, maar ik vind het vooral zielig voor hem. Al die moeite tijdens het stoppen, voor niets. En bovendien, al die toetsenstress voor niets. Hij haalt zijn herkansingen makkelijk, want hij is hardstikke slim. Hij heeft de hele zomer bijna elke dag wel iets aan zijn studie gedaan, en vond het nog leuk ook. Maar nu de toetsen er aan zitten te komen vindt hij het eng. Ik wou dat ik hem wat meer kon helpen. Maar hij heeft liever een peuk.

Ik heb zelf ook last van stress. Augustus is vandaag op de helft. Dat betekent dat ik nog twee weken heb. Nog twee weken om de laatste punten voor mijn propedeuse te halen. Als ik het niet haal kan ik net zo goed inpakken. Zonder propedeuse kan ik hier in België geen enkele studie doen. Als ik het wel haal, heb ik toegang tot de Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. Ik heb me ingeschreven voor de studie geschiedenis. Niet omdat ik zo graag geschiedenis wil studeren. Maar meer omdat ik niet wist wat ik anders moet kiezen. Ik vind mezelf een hopeloos figuur. Ik ga nog maar even studeren.
