Sinopsis:

Democratic National Committee Superdelegate and friend of ServeNext Madison, Awais Khaleel, has b

Democratic National Committee Superdelegate and friend of ServeNext Madison, Awais Khaleel, has become quite popular over the last few weeks. After putting up a YouTube video (see above) asking his peers across the country what to do with the "power" of being a superdelegate in the historic 2008 Presidential Primary, he has received lots of feedback -- including from actor Kal Penn, star of Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay and National Arts Policy Committee Member for the Barack Obama for President campaign.

Mr. Penn is one of the many prominent candidate supporters Ms. Wolfe, 25, a law student at the University of Detroit-Mercy and Mr. Khaleel, 23, a junior at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, have heard from recently. But the two of them haven’t been swayed just yet. They posted a YouTube video two weeks ago asking for input from other college students on how to vote.

“Guess who might decide the leader of the free world?” Mr. Khaleel asks in the clip. “Me!”

A friend of Reilly Goodwin (our Lead Organizer at the University of Wisconsin), Khaleel took the time out of his busy schedule to speak at the ServeNext Chapter Launch event in Madison last month. His message centered on our unique moment in American history and the grassroots excitement now growing around the expansion of National Service programs. Interestingly, Penn's open letter to Khaleel included college affordability, volunteerism, and the call for young people to play an active role in our democracy.

State after state, I have been meeting young people who, for the first time in their lives, are not simply voting, but volunteering for a campaign. After being told for years that their voices don’t count for much, they have risen up and joined us in securing a better world for all Americans. Many of these folks cannot afford a college education. Many lack health care. Some are caring for ailing parents. Others are first-generation Americans. Overwhelmingly, they’ve answered the challenge that Senator Obama has given them: to take responsibility and become involved. I ask you not to ignore them any longer.

While we know that Khaleel won't be swayed by celebrities, Penn's words reinforce the feeling among the National Service Community that the time to expand AmeriCorps is upon us... that there is a perfect storm brewing. We wish Awais the best of luck and, regardless of which campaign he chooses to back, we hope that he'll bring the passion, idealism, and can-do spirit of our generation with him to Denver this summer for the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

The past month, I haven’t been able to catch a single film because of my once-again burgeoning

The past month, I haven't been able to catch a single film because of my once-again burgeoning work schedule and an attendant shortage of funds. Nevertheless, all things stand to change from this month on, as I greet the oncoming Summer Blockbuster™ season in the US with a pocketful of ticket- spending money.

As with previous posts, most local releases are noted in italics while titles I am definitely looking forward to see on screen are indicated in orange.

may 7
Speed Racer
Deception
What Happens in Vegas
Kamasutra Night

I'm strongly determined to stay away from the moviehouses...unless, though, to oblige a friend who might not yet have seen Iron Man - I'm looking for this to run an iron-clad 3-4 weeks at the local b.o.

I'm sooo not sold on Speed Racer - the trailers gave me the impression that this is going to be yet another piece of CGI wankery...something like the shotgun marriage of a candy-floss (cotton-candy) machine gone haywire and a Brobdignagian roller coaster. This is supposed to be from the Wachowski brothers (???) who really spoiled a generation of SF-film geeks with their over-indulgent Matrix trilogy. Yet, worse than the Transformers, it appears to have shut out its anime origins in an attempt to woo as wide a market as possible.

Deception (can't they think of a more original title for an R-rated erotic thriller?????)...is it me or is Hugh Jackman really throwing his lot on this sorry Eyes Wide Shut (Stanley Kubrick must be turning in his grave) pastiche? (At least...co-star Ewan MacGregor has the "Da Vinci Code" prequel to look forward to). Maybe he must be feeling sorry over the failure of his small-screen venture "Viva Laughlin"....

may 14
Ikaw Pa Rin
Call Center
Perfect Creature
Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay
Mega Snake

Here continues the misadventures of America's favourite Asian stoners...they were supposed to "head" for Amsterdam, but they get stopped by Homeland Security 'coz Kumar gets mistaken for an Arab terrorist!!! Before they know it, their asses get clapped into Gitmo - but in true H & K fashion, they managed to get out and run into Neil Patrick Harris along the way before hightailin' it over to a certain You-Know-Who's ranch in Texas.

Here's the rated-R trailer!!!

Harold & Kumar....ftw!!!

Perfect Creature....hmmm, haven't I seen this on Star Movies? Methinks they were airing this sometime last month or two...I don't know, but whoever's putting this sorry-looking Underworld rip-off (Eastern European cleavage-check! Pseudo-gothic ad layouts on local broadsheets-check!!) onto local screens must be reminded that not all moviegoers can be fooled....

may 21
Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Forever Boys

Once again - just as with Iron Man - Pinoy moviegoers get the jump over their stateside brethren by a couple of days on this one. Is it me or are there just too many Louise Brooks bobs swimming about for Cate Blanchett to don one (Holy Rihanna, Batman!!!)

Nevertheless, it must be fascinating to see if grizzled vet Harrison Ford can teach young pup Shia LaBoeuf a few tricks or two...and maybe take Nic Cage to task for ripping him off in the National Treasure films.

may 28
dagaw
Torotot
Caregiver
Sex & The City
21
All the Boys Love Mandy Lane

I'm soo looking forward to catching 21 locally...

...not just because of its whip-smart casting but its equally crisp soundtrack featuring recent Coachella faves MGMT and Soulwax's reworking of the Rolling Stones' "You Can't Get What You Want".

"Chicken Dinner" clip from 21

"You Should Come to Vegas" clip from 21

I love the way india.arie's version of Don Henley's "Heart of the Matter" was used in the film...however, in the end, I am still mixed as to whether to catch this estrogenfest - and be marked as a traitor to my butt-scratching console-jockey kind - or steer the heck clear out of this. Or should I surrender to my inner UES-worshipping Chuck Bass and give in to a lady friend's temptation to serve as arm candy....

More is expected to come over the next couple of months, including the entry of two - oops, make that, three more costumed heroes in local cinemas (woe betide to any local offerings threatening to show up against them):

First cheez first tik? Gori wants to thank all her loyal aur garam desi yaaron readers- I made mehri goal of over 10,000 blog hits in the first 6 months! :) Pyar jis! :D Shukriya bahut na? :D Abi, yeh hits are now getting divided up between here aur Revver.com, where gori has a burgeoning vlog going (over 3000 hits in 2 months from 30 vids..), on subjects like filim reviews (including ek massive plot spoiler series for naya Harold & Kumar: Escape from Guantanamo Bay filim releasing later this month na?), making of garam slideshows, mehri bura diwana ex-sanam, aur upcoming vids comparing various Mini Cooper features (once gori figures how to get around Revver's incredibly laughable need to flag mehri Mini Cooper vid for 'copyright infringement' (ROFLMAO) :P for having 'Uyirin Uyire', yeh Tollywood filim song, playing on the stereo in the BG lmao..) may have to move those to You Tube, where you can see the whole Tamil Nad filim vid as per below.. gori "reviews" it :P in voh paragraphs below bhi na?) lol... plus coming soon: free psychic readings! (with video answers na? Angrezi mein tik? lol.. told u gori is ek diyan tee hee) ..

Meantime, gori has been offline at least 80% of the last 4 weeks na? Despite furious effort to the contrary... ugg... yeh M1M is now the subject of ek video series by gori on Revver na? lol :P (In case u didn't figure it out yet, if u hover over the links u can usually see yeh page it will take u 2.. if u click.. it will take u there na?) :)

...aur you thought Bollywood is dumb na? Gori pyar bahut yeh song 'Uyirin Uyire' phir... tik hai? Check yeh vid for urselves na: Kaakha Kaakha 'Uyirin Uyire' BTW they forgot in the You Tube comments to mention that 'Kakka' (besides being maternal uncle Hindi mein, is unfortunately also 'sh1t' in Spanish bhi na.. spelled 'caca'.. tee hee... kuch bhi...) WTF with the metal-face back-up dancer yaaron :P (doing disco hyper-fast in plastic shirts) turning into Tamil Nad national flag colors pirates with weird mouth gags & female-style bandeau tops.. :P turning into bloody graveyard zombies in jeans, na? :D Is the female lead allowed to 'kiss' the chubby dude who changes his hair cut more than his outfits in this vid because they are really married in real life na? :P Whatup with the crazy hand/arm moves on yeh yaar on the tree branch (right after the metal-face zombie dancers), or the bandage/fashion accessory on his hand towards the middle na? Dang! :D Wait- better yet- the bowl cut with bangs (fringe to u peeps) :P to go with the weird hand bandage thing na? Aur u thought SRK is cheesy na? lmao.. If gori chased someone for that long (or got chased, hint hint) :P she might want more than kunjum kunjum kiss na? :P tee hee.. BTW do all Tamil yaar wrinkle their eyebrows like that? Or only this yaar + gori's ex? Please enlighten tik? At least this guy is kala enough for gori :D unlike yucky goray Bolly heros :D mmm... except maybe Ajay Devgan lol.. The chick is hot in purple at the end na? ;) Except where did her tennis shoes :P needed to run through all that slate(?) or kuch bhi go? Like when she sort of subjugates her pati with her leg? She's barefoot then.. notice? roflmao... :P

Just an observation.. meantime, here is gori's open video letter to Tamil villager yaar ex BF (Agasthi! hello! did u actually steal gori's Mini Cooper deposit or was it yeh M1M? Inquiring minds want to know!).. :P this is part of a series of vids on how gori is trying to flee yeh M1M hacker/stalker, who has been on ek ENORMOUS rampage lately... poor gori na? Click here to see the playlist of the whole series of vids lol... & click here to see the playlist on mehri weekly cafe meets in downtown SF na? :) Not off to a great start lekin I'll be there next week, & all weeks thereafter.. see u there! :)

An aspiration of gori's is to start ek page (if the eye strain ever stops enough to update what's here lol).. with other peeps with websites using their own unintentional hybrid languages etc.. lol... Plus other funny cheezay.. cheezon.. uh.. kuch bhi.. anyhow..

So here's the website du jour.. just to show u yaar how gori is BAHUT unlike yeh other goron na? :P For example: I have never stepped foot in a Target (though gori has a 'white trach' lmao dost who pyar Tar-zhay bahut.. always wondered why) aur gori hasn't seen 'Sicko' (because it was sold out at the filim festival where it played na? .. sirf reason..) phir bhi I know sub stats on socialized health care from being ek self-employed person badly in need of it, yet lacking it tik? Will admit that yeh yuppie baap aur ma did let us drink wine occassionally as bachchiyan na? :P roflmao.. tik hai tik hai.. gori San Francisco se na? Lekin for 20 years tik? gori nahin pasand voh yuppian hai na? :( However, I do hang out in the Castro (for majority of those years na? aur have tons of gay dostay.. being bi myself tik?) hmm.. aur gori doesn't own ek TV either na? (Wow, are there other peeps like that? Sub yaaron make me feel like a freak for not having one... lol).. wait a sec here.. what's this about filim fests (aur liking weird/obscure other cultures filims lmao? aur sushi na?).. :| tik phir I hate dogs, don't know who TF Michel Gondry is, hate sports, am OVER brown ladkay fetishising voh Asian ladkiyan (more than gori na? hmmpph! tee hee...) & actually realize how racist Japanese ppl (from/in Japan, nahin ABCJs na?) are.. plus gori hates other goron entirely na? Especially the ones who they talk about here :P Nothing like u ABCD coconuts! :P lol...tee hee.. What is gori talking about this time? Check it out: Stuff White People Like lmao... nahin, gori doesn't resemble this at ALL tik? lols...

Be sure to aao to the cafe meets tik? No lurking na? :) U know u want some garam gori nasha hai na? It all starts with ek conversation.. aur don't forget: sub dostay aur ppl with resources (comp geeks/IT ppl, legal help, extra cell phone (minus SIM na? sirf cell phone plastic lol) donators) or anyone else desi-minded invited hai na? pyar! :D

Last seen in Mira Nair's The Namesake, Penn is currently on campus at the University of Pennsylvania, teaching a class on Asian Americans in the Media.

Penn at UPenn (aargh, terrible) hopes to bring the perspective of a Hollywood insider to his class. Amardeep Singh attended an open Q&A session with the actor:

This past Sunday I went down to the University of Pennsylvania for a rare, open Q&A session with Kal Penn. As readers may remember from Anna's earlier post on the subject, Penn is at Penn this spring, teaching a class on representations of Asian Americans in the Media. He's also shooting episodes of "House" (go, House), and stumping for Obama in his free time, though with that schedule I'm not sure how he has any.

As I understand it, there was initially some controversy about the class -- is this going to be a stunt, or a real asset to a the Asian American Studies curriculum?

more

To read a February 21 issue of Penn Current which has a feature by Heather A. Davis on a man The New York Times describes as a 'hip young movie star' click here.

Finally, Penn's new movie, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay, is due for an April 25 release. The film revolves around Kumar Patel -- a 'man of colour' and, therefore, suspicious -- being mistaken for a bomb-carrying terrorist (Penn played the role of a teenage terrorist, Ahmed Amar, in the sixth season of the hit TV series 24)while aboard a flight to Amsterdam. Thrown into Guantanamo Bay with his friend Harold (played by John Cho), the duo manage to escape and finally end up in the ranch of George W Bush.

I watched "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay," last night and it left me with a huge f*ckin' grin on my face.

Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay marks the triumphant return of the two hilarious, slacker anti-heroes. Starring John Cho and Kal Penn as two stoners who can't get a break, the sequel to "Harold & Kumar Go To White Castle," finds the boys getting themselves in trouble when they try to sneak a bong onboard a flight to Amsterdam. Now suspected of terrorism, they are forced to run from the law and try to find a way to prove their innocence in an epic journey of deep thoughts, deeper inhaling, and a wild trip around the world.

Rife with fart jokes, boobs 'n butts, copious amounts of Marijuana smoke and Neil Patrick Harris(!), this movie smartly tackles/brings to light, issues of racism received by Amerikans of Asian ancestry (particularly in the wake of 9-11 and the "War on Terror"). I LOVED this movie because I feel like John Cho's Korean-Amerikan character "Harold," and Kal Penn's Indian-Amerikan character "Kumar," represent the two sides of my psyche. Both are best friends, vastly intelligent/ignorant/educated/cheeba smokers, who also differ in a plethora of ways:

Harold is a hopeless romantic, hard-working, over-achiever, constantly working to better himself, is many times very insecure and is always trying to think logically. He thinks about the future, puts others before himself and is extremely cautious.

Kumar throws caution to the wind. He is a lazy, under-achieving stoner who is always looking for a way to escape responsibility, have fun, enjoy life and is never dwelling on any one thing for too long. He primarily puts his own happiness before others but almost always learns from his (many) mistakes.

I heart Rob Cordy (of the Daily Show w/ Jon Stewart). His character "Special Agent Fox," is SO out-of-pocket, it's incredible. From pouring a can of grape soda onto the ground in front of a large Black man, to pouring a bag of pennies on the table in front of two Jewish kids to ilicit information as to the whereabouts of Harold & Kumar, Cordry went "balls-out," as a racist, frightened agent of oppression in the "war against terror." My wifey thought he "overdid it," but I thought this cat hit the nail straight on the head (over and over again!).

While I don't want to hype this moive up too much and leave you disappointed, I recommend it in the highest regard. If you love comedies that are so stupid they're smart (ie: Dumb 'n Dumber, Zoolander), H&K pt.2 is right up your alley. Look for a special cameo appearance from our very own "Thief in Chief," George Walker Bush. *ZING!*

["Oh SNAP! Harold & Kumar are some funnyass Comeditizers!"]

Asian Amerikan men (who aren't martial artists) in the spotlight like yee.

Neil Patrick Harris stopped by Jimmy Kimmel's show last night, promoting the new Harold & Kumar flick. I used to not fux with this guy, thought he was kinda wack in the first H&K, but I swear to everything... his role on How I Met Your Mother is nothing short of brilliant.
