Four For Friday..on Thursday.

I have to get these out early this week as I have an "appointment" in the morning and don't know what tomorrow is going to look like. This weeks Four For Friday are all songs that are not necessarily worship songs, but could be. So often I find that lyrics and music can be an act of worship. I've mentioned it several times, but cutting the grass with my iPod is one of my greatest times of thought, prayer, reflection and, in some ways, worship. Here are four songs that were probably never intended to be worship songs, but could be.

"The Reason" by Hoobastank - "I found a reason for me, to change who I used to be. A reason to start over new. And the reason is you".

"The Great Divide" by Scott Stapp - "You set me free to live my life. You became my reason to survive the great divide. You set me free".

"Just The Way You Are" by Billy Joel - This song always reminds me of a letter that God would send to those who follow Him. I can see it arriving in the mail or inbox when we are feeling unworthy or discouraged. "What will it take till you believe in me the way that I believe in you? I said I love you and that's forever. This I promise from the heart. I could not love you any better. I love you just the way your are".

"You Move Me" by Garth Brooks - "Now I can't go with you and stay where I am so you move me". This one was a borderline choice since it was actually played on Christian Radio. It was redone by Susan Ashton, but I like the Garth version better.

How bout you? What are the songs that speak to you that wouldn't necessarly be played on a Sunday morning? I just know someone is going to rattle off about 10 U2 songs....

Esta vez, hablo de la canción de Hoobastank, The Reason.
Definitivamente ésta entra entre las canciones más románticas que haya escuchado. (Tanto, que ya le hallé uso).

Me gusta la melodía porque añadieron elementos de música generada digitalmente y la instrumentación es adecuada para transmitir los sentimientos de la canción.

La letra narra el arrepentimiento de una persona al haberle hecho daño a otra, sin embargo, que encontró la razón para cambiar, para vivir.

Finding that voice of reason in unreasonable times

People write for all sorts of reasons. Some write to express. Some write for fame. Some write for wealth. Some write for the fun of it. Some write for love. Some write for the sake of a nation. Some write to destroy, flame - and sometimes with perceived good reasons. Some write for life. Some write before death, to explain. Everyone who writes write for something.

I write with a simple reason, too, in search of a voice of reason in crazy times. My country, Malaysia, is going through uncertain times. Her Prime Minister has been (for a while now) and still is facing a leadership crisis of sorts. His Opposition have grown considerably in numerical terms. The news exults a degree of journalistic objectivity not quite seen before. And we hence know the lines are blurred, sides are not clear, which thus translates into the coming of a struggle between reason and her foes.

With trepidation, I write seeking some sort of rationale toward paving new futures for my people, Malaysians. It will be hard for the cynics of new Malaysia to imagine fresh scenarios for Malaysian society, for marginalised communities, or for genuine multiracialism to break through.

Who I am at this point wouldn't matter. It'll suffice to say I'm a Malaysian who seeks a better tomorrow for my fellow people. My humble hope will be that you, the reader, will strive together in the uncertain times to come, to seek that voice within yourself - your reason.

Music is an aspect of running and working out that makes the experience an enjoyable one for me. Sometimes, listening to a few good tunes makes a bad workout a better one, or an easy run a bit harder.

I want to share with you today the playlist I have been listening to during my last few workouts. You will find some of the oddest selections and some that make perfect sense. Either way, they work for me, and I have shared with you some some of the reasons why I think they do. I know that some of the explanations sound a bit weird, but I, too, am a bit weird. (:

I hope you find something that you can use for your next workout. Let me know what works for you!

My Rockin' Run Playlist ( I know, I am a dork!):

I'm Alive by Celine Dion (Nice to warm up to . . . I always think of my body waking up and being "alive.")

Are You Gonna Be My Girl? by Jet (I love to pick up the speed right when he says "GO!")

Ain't No Mountain by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (Of course when you are working out, this is perfect for telling yourself that no mountain is high enough. This song is also special to me and my mom.)

Stronger by Kanye West (A little bit explicit, but I love the tough, "what doesn't kill me will make me stronger" theme. Is gets me goin'!)

You Know I'm No Good by Amy Winehouse (I love Amy Winehouse despite all of her issues, and this is one of those angry songs that makes me run a bit harder -- sometimes a little bit of attitude makes me push myself more.)

Love Is Free by Sheryl Crow (She is just the best, and this is such a feel-good song!)

Another One Bites the Dust by Queen (What workout is complete without Queen? During this song, I like to think of all the people I am passing while running . . . "And another one down, and another one down . . .")

Life Is A Highway by Rascal Flatts (I always think about running down the highway . . . fast. Somehow, this song just works for me and my adrenaline.)

Love Song by Sara Bareilles (Love her voice and love the lyrics. The beat of the song helps me to move!)

No One by Alicia Keys (She is just so cool, and this song is another one that helps me to bust my butt!)

Lady Marmalade by Various Artists (Happy memories from family vacations -- always helps to pass treadmill time!)

Many the Miles by Sara Bareilles (Again, I love her voice and the lyrics to this song; it reminds me to appreciate life)

That's Life by Michael Bublé (Michael Bublé is one of the closest living people to The Great Frank -- Sinatra, that is! This song reminds me of all the naysayers and pushes me to prove them wrong.)

The Reason

Ni siquiera estoy seguro de que este post vaya a tener algún tipo de coherencia o relación entre las canciones escogidas, es más, pretendía volver al antiguo formato de posts musicales con una sola canción y toda una historia acerca de ella, pero hacer eso sería revelar demasiado y meterme en terrenos que ahora no quiero explorar, asi que veamos que sale.

The Reason

Tengo la costumbre de escuchar las canciones mientras escribo sobre ellas, pero esta vez podría no ser tan necesario porque The Reason es una canción que lleva en mi cabeza mucho tiempo. The Reason es el claro ejemplo de las canciones que etiquetan a una banda en un genero que no les pertenece y es que hoobastank gano muchos seguidores, pero a la vez perdió algo de credibilidad entre quienes los seguían. La culpa sin duda no fue de ellos sino de la misma joya de canción que crearon y aunque ya no es costumbre, aquí va la letra completa de la canción.

Introduction and Welcome

Well, I've not been at the blogging about crochet for long, and I've already moved shop. I prefer WordPress blogs over any others, so now that I've figured out how to do multiple blogs on one account, I'm set! :) I'll slowly be transferring posts over from the old blog onto here.

I guess I should get on with the introduction. I live a simple life in a simple little southern town. I'm a 30something, happily married mother of 4 great kids. I also have 2 wonderful little dogs, Link my black and tan rat terrier, and Ty-Ty my black and tan min-pin. I also have two parakeets, Jack Jack the Menace (he thinks he's an escape artist, even though he hasn't made it out of the cage--yet) and Sammy Girl the Quiet. They don't exactly get along, so they are separated by not only different cages but in different rooms as well because Jack Jack raised such a stink about her being in the same room as him. *sigh* We also have more fish than I care to stop and count.

My oldest daughter is on the cusp of becoming a teenager, and boy is the family ever feeling the hormone surge. Sadly, I can recall exhibiting some of her "signs" and kind of know what she's going through, though she's driving her little sister (they are two years apart in age) crazy. I'm lucky in that I have two beautiful daughters and two handsome sons. Each one is talented in his/her own special way. :)

My husband is the greatest man I've ever known. He supports me no matter what I decide to do with my life be it writing, reading, crocheting, working on other crafts, or playing video games. He takes care of me when I'm in need, and loves me unconditionally. You really can't ask for more than that in life. He's my best friend, and I adore him wholeheartedly. Now, because I've praised him where others can see, he'll come home in a snit. It never fails.

I'm addicted to romance novels (mostly paranormal, but I can't resist a good, sexy cowboy), music (LINKIN PARK!!!! and Hoobastank all the way, dude!) and video games. Warcraft, baby! I also absolutely LOVE the movie Hellboy and am very eagerly awaiting the release of the second film later this year.

Anyhow, now that you know a little bit more about me than you probably ever cared to, allow me to say welcome to my crafty blog. ;)

Backstory

Every story has the visible, audible, tactile, tangible, understandable aspects we look for, while searching for the bigger meaning - if we're lucky in living the story, and luckier still, in searching for that bigger meaning. Owen's story, as posted here, has a backstory. I don't post much of that unseen, unheard version of Owen's life. There's a reason. There are many reasons.

Owen didn't give me permission to tell the whole story. He can't now, so I keep his backstory locked inside, waiting for time to pass, waiting for permission. Each day, I feel more able to share that story. Each day, he lets go of his grasp on those invisible moments...just a bit.

The Owen you know through this blog, is but a glimpse of the story he told us, the story he lived with us, and the story he would have told you - had he lived long enough to shout it from the bridge, himself. Maybe he did. Maybe that's why he's not here to tell all of us now.

The backstory is something akin to fitting the pieces of the puzzle together, knowing some of the pieces are missing now, and may forever...be. We've always loved puzzles, whether crosswords, riddles, or the cardboard kinds brought to life on a dining room table. This puzzle, the what-happened-to-Owen-Riley puzzle is unlikely to be revealed on our dining room table. We love the effort, though, of finding the pieces, and slipping them into the dye-cut slots, or the yet-to-be-defined boundaries of this puzzle.

Part of the difficulty in telling the main story, and the backstory, is that there are so many versions, depending on the storyteller and the audience. Nothing new here. Each of us lives our lives with unique complexities, whether we share them or not. I don't tell everyone all that I'm thinking and feeling. Survival is a strong human need, and one I honor. So did Owen. Don't we all?

At a certain point in our lives, though, we become more of our own mythologies (those we've created, those others observe), than what's apparent in our visible, public images. I post more here about my internal life than I feel is "safe" in maintaining my ability to conduct business and sustain my career. But, I do it because so few others can. I can, because I'm willing to risk.

Owen took risks. Some of them were foolish, yet he felt the cost was worth the price, and ultimately contributed to his message - so he took them, and sometimes suffered the bullying of others less learned, less experienced. Sometimes, he took those risks because he thought he had to "get it all in because life is short", and some are shorter than others. He was a tall man, who lived a short life. He knew things before they happened, and sharing that knowledge, caused him no end of consternation and confrontation.

Not everyone wants to hear our inner thoughts. Owen didn't care much whether you or anyone else wanted to hear. His mission was to tell you what he was thinking. He was not a perfect person, and he didn't hide it. He didn't "mean to do those things to you...and so I [he] just wanted you to know...and the reason is you..."

Little by little, Owen will let me, let you know. Thanks, Oh-Bert.
