Last night I saw the midnight screening of the Dark Knight at the new GardenWalk in Anaheim; it was sensational. I'm sure there will be review after review praising this film and I'm sure I'll agree with what is said. I'm not going to write about the film in general. The question I'd like to raise is this: is Christopher Nolan's Joker the greatest villain in Cinema History? Let's go through and check:

Darth Vader - is now just a winy teenager. Even without the destruction of the Darth Vader character via the new 3 Star Wars episodes this Joker would give him a run for his money.

the Terminator - Unfortunately he's only been a villain 33.4% of the time (he's the hero of the 2nd and 3rd film). He falls behind the Nolan's Joker as well.

Silas Lynch - from The Birth of a Nation, 1915. While he is worth mentioning, he falls behind the Joker as well - he's not near as disturbing as the Joker, nor is he as evil.

the Wicked Witch of the West - she's been made into the misunderstood good guy by "Wicked."

Phyllis Dietrichson - in Double Indemnity, 1944. It's true she's crafty and can't be trusted but compared to the Joker she's like Mother Teresa. She causes nowhere near the level of destruction, and by comparison, she is not feared. The Joker strikes terror into th hearts of an entire city.

Henry F. Potter - from It's a Wonderful Life, 1946. Just nowhere near the same level - I think you'd all agree.

Mrs. Iselin - from Manchurian Candidate, 1962. She's on the list because she's twisted and devious - the Joker has her beat in both categories.

Catwoman - Batman Returns, 1992. Catwoman is probably the most comparable person on the list simply because she too comes from the Batman universe. The Joker will leave you disturbed and rattled. Catwoman is more of a typical superhero villain - almost playful. Joker wins, hands down.

Out of all the villains I can think of, the only one who truly rivals Nolan's Joker is Hannibal Lecter. It's a very close call but there are a few things to consider: think about the amount of havoc the Joker brought upon the city. Think about the volume of people who were terrified of him. Think about his motives. The most frightening thing about the Joker is that he really does not have any motives - he's just a "dog barking at cars." He loves doing what he does. Though it's a close call, I believe the Joker wins again.

Heath Ledger was perfect and I'm not exaggerating. It's fair to say (while we are on the Hannibal subject) that he gave an "Anthony Hopkins" worthy performance - he'll go down in history.

So that's my point - I think a strong case could be made for the Nolan Joker to be the greatest villain of all time. What say you?

-David May

This episode really pulled at my heartstrings. When the 86 year old man came in and he was not expected to have a good outcome even with surgery. I said, "how sad," but when his wife came in and hugged him and kissed his cheek, the tears started flowing. The next part I teared up with was the little 2 1/2 year old boy, Peyton, who had an enlarged heart and he went into cardiac arrest on the operating table. The mother and father's pain was so raw and emotional and as a parent I could relate. I cried and cried. Then they said they did not expect him to live because his heart was so damaged. I cried some more. When you have children and they get sick, I know it must wear on you. This mother was given horrible news. I really liked the pediatric surgeon they ended up with more than the ER guy they had. He had made a crude comment " so we should just let him die". How callus. The other guy that ended up performing the heart transplant was awesome. He kept them informed and was emotional with them and cried with them. You could tell he was genuine with his emotions. I was so happy in the end when he went home and appeared to be doing well. It was a nice end to an emotional episode.

It’s 9:36 pm and I am in bed watching The Holiday for the 52nd time. The Holiday is comforting

It's 9:36 pm and I am in bed watching The Holiday for the 52nd time. The Holiday is comforting for me in the way that a warm blanket is when you're on a cold metal gurney in an icy emergency room at 1:50 in the morning, waiting to see a doctor. It's more Jack Black and Kate Winslet and the film's concept (less Jude Law and Cameron Diaz) that take me to the safe center of the tornado. I live in Los Angeles in a pretty fabulous house just minutes from Cameron Diaz's character's house, yet I am lured in every time by the fantasy of doing a house exchange with her and stumbling upon a Black-Jack Black of my own. No matter how much I have, I always want more...

Brown Sugar, Pretty Woman, Sixteen Candles, Love Jones, Ordinary People, Why Do Fools Fall In Love, Something New, Notting Hill, Love and Basketball and Love Actually are the other soft and warm cashmere security blankets that guard and protect my soul and sanity.

I've committed to yet another season of Big Brother on CBS and this one looks fairly promising. Brian was kicked off last night and I couldn't have been happier. I mean seriously...this fool comes on the show and in only one episode convinces himself that he is running the whole damned show. Are you kidding me?? I guarantee you that he is a prematureejaculator! I am completely and thoroughly annoyed with Ollie, the Black guy. They actually have a Black girl AND a Black guy this season. I don't think they've had that combo since the first season with Will Mega and Cassandra. Back to Ollie...Ollie comes from a Black pentacostal/baptist background-his father is a preacher, but this Negro announces that he's digging on the white chicks within the first 20 minutes of the damned show!! He's not cute...he's goofy...he may just be worse than Marvin (from Season Five). Marvin was a piece of shit-sorry to say it but he was as Black as you can get and he called himself being into white chicks as well and actually thought that he was a part of the nonexistent "Van Boys" alliance. Why is it that reality shows can't seem to find one decent, educated, balanced Black man?? Why?? From Kevin Powell's militant ass on the first season of The Real World to gay ass Stephen on Real World Seattle who bitch-slapped Irene to "Big World, Small People" David on Real World Venice to weak quitting assOsten on Survivor Pearl Islands to taking it up the ass Beau Beasley on Big Brother 6 and the worst offender of all, Marcellas from Big Brother 3, who was basically an antebellum south Negress running around yelling "I don't know nothin' 'bout birthing no babies." Not a sane, straight, competent, negro among them...only Kevin Powell has redeemed himself and become a real man. The Black chick on Big Brother this season is also a trip. She announced within the first 3 minutes of the show that she has bi-racial twins and that one is dark with traditional Black features and the other has fair skin and is blonde with blue eyes. Why was it important for her to share that in the first few minutes of the house?? Her weave is also on the brink of being really fucked up. I'm not sure if it's that the braided hair supporting the tracks is loose and puffy or something else, but her hair stands off/away from her head. Maybe it's that her head is just big??? I so wanted her to have to compete in the "Honey" and feather pillows competition...her weave would have been wrecked for the rest of the show and I would have truly treasured watching her work around that for the rest of the summer!!

Baby Borrowers is on tonight and I watched half of it. It has to be the most ridiculous nonsense on television right now...the teenage girls on this show all have the bodies of 30 year old women (w/huge asses and breasts), wear way too much makeup and behave as though they're on the "Real Teenage Housewives of Orange County." I can't believe that they created a television show that basically panders to teenagers and their "relationships." How real can this show be when they provide them with custom homes, cars, money and beautifully furnished homes that they didn't have to earn or pay for?? Borrowing someone else's children for a few days?? If they were real teen parents they'd be living at home with their parents or in a low income section 8 apartment with no cable,tv dinners, prepackaged lettuce, new cars, air-conditioning or running water etc... Pure Nonsense!!

The absolute best episode of Flipping Out aired last night! OMG!! Jeff confronted lame ass Chris about the hidden cameras and fired him, which resulted in Chris and Jenny basically breaking up and moving out the house (that they sadly rented from Jeff). I love Jenny!! Her humor, style, hair, plump boobies...everything about her is great! In the first season I thought she was basically Elaine from Seinfeld, but I realized this season that she is ten times better than Elaine!! Jenny was way too cute Chris' dumb ass...I hope she finds a fabulous man to rescue her from Jeff and buy her a fabulous house of her own!! I wish a The Holiday and Something New for Jenny!!

Time to watch Hopkins!!

P.S. Whoopi and Sherri made Elisabeth cry today on The View. It was a good day...a VERY good day (in spite of Sherri saying "reponent" instead of "proponent")!!

More than 2 million people in the U.S.

What I Learned From My First Reading Session about Seizures

More than 2 million people in the U.S. have had seizures and/or been diagnosed with epilepsy

The term seizure is a symptom

If a seizure is not epileptic, or if a diagnosis is uncertain, it should be described as paroxysmal

There are about 32 types of seizures

aprox. 50% of seizures never have an identified cause; the other 50% are usually due to underlying diseases or injury of the brain

Seizures limited to one portion of the brain are called partial seizures

Most seizures last from 30 seconds to 2 minutes

For a fairly common 'symptom' very little is known about seizures. Understanding seizures better could improve the lifestyle of thousands of people. Equally important, it could decrease the amount of fear in people who suffer a seizure and are unsure of why it happened, if it will happen again, or when it could happen. Tests to search for underlying causes can also be quite time consuming and expensive, often including an EEG, CT scan, and an MRI. Each test can be very important in indentifying problems, but the quality of the tests do not seem to meet the needs of epilepsy/seizure patients since only 50% of the time a cause is identified.

From Pixel RN:

Here’s an actual exchange that took place where I work:

Doctor: (not addressing anyone specific) We’re going to need an echo for this patient.

Nurse: (who is prepping the patient for a procedure, and the only other person in the room): Okay, I’ll call for one.

A few seconds later the doctor turns around and says to the same nurse, “Oh, hi. Are you here to do the echo?”

  I love it! Needed a good laugh today.

I caught a bit of "Hopkins" last week on ABC. Making a point to catch it since I love that stuff, but was bored in no time when it was 'Docs 24/7'. I'd love to see a nurse-centric show and Beth would be a great one to follow in spite of saying it would be boring.

I finally got around to watching the new reality show Hopkins about physicians at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Within the first few seconds of watching the show, I came to a conclusion: you don't prove to people that you are an intense drama of the challenges facing the top medical specialists by having one of the first scenes in your opening being doctors pointing to an MRI scan image and saying "There's the tumor!" as though they have just proved their unique medical genius, when the tumor in question is about the biggest, juiciest lesion you could ever hope to find via MRI. I think my dog could have identified that tumor, and he only has one eye in addition to being, you know, a dog.

I often get depressed about the direction in which this world is heading. I go about my daily life, and I try to be social and open to strangers, but I almost always find myself confused and under whelmed. I often find myself not understanding what people are talking about, and it’s not because I’m stupid, but because a lot of people speak so vaguely that I find myself struggling to interpret what they’re saying. My mind works abstractly, and I just can’t deal with people who only think and communicate in a concrete manner. When I ask someone a question, I very rarely want a one word answer; I can’t do anything with that.

But I digress. I was saying that the world is going down the tubes. Nothing proves this to me more than my “Google Analytics” report for this blog. In the report, I can find out what terms people searched for to arrive at my blog. I understand that I bring some of this on myself, and it’s understandable that “boner” or “titties” are going to pop up here and there. Today, I think the wheels have officially fallen off the wagon.

At 8:34 (Central) this morning, someone found my blog after searching for “is it illegal to talk dirty online?” I find this really troubling for a number of reasons

1) That’s awfully early to be concerned about the legality of cyber sex.

2) The search itself leads me to believe that the person who made the search is a total creep. Why would it be illegal to talk dirty online? Is it illegal to talk dirty in person? Talking dirty is totally legal unless you’re harassing someone. This seems so obvious that I have to believe that the searcher was talking about talking dirty to children. And just in case anyone else searches for that and finds this blog in the future: yes. It is illegal to talk dirty to children online.

Yet, this likely pedophile is not the most alarming thing about my search report. Just over two hours later, at 10:41 in the AM, someone (God help them) searched for “Anthony Hopkins fucking.” What?

I know that celebrity sex tapes are quite en vogue these days, and I understand that even if a celebrity isn’t very attractive (Chyna), there is still a sick, voyeuristic fascination in the public’s part, but this is too much. Anthony Hopkins doesn’t even want to see Anthony Hopkins fucking.

I understand the hullabaloo over a possible Mini Me sex tape, since he is a surly drunk midget, but I cannot abide by the possibility of an Anthony Hopkins sex tape. I cannot abide by anyone wanting to see an Anthony Hopkins sex tape. Seriously, I have a lunch to eat.

On a totally unrelated note, does anyone know how I can get my hands on a video of Robert Duvall getting a BJ?

With the doctors of Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice on summer hiatus, the real MDs of (Johns) Hopkins tackled life, death and every ailment in between on Thursday's premiere. Hopkins followed a brain surgeon, urologist, and other doctors around one of the nation's top medical centers. --Nicholas White

So how does real-life medical drama compare to fictional medical drama? Let's compare the charts:

The Environment
• Private Practice: Beachy and convivial. The doctors are partial to Frappucinos and new agey discussions.
• Grey's Anatomy: Time flies at the speed of social drama, with jaw-dropping medical textbook cases being wheeled into the OR every few episodes.
• Hopkins: Free time? One doctor gets 2-4 hours of sleep a night, crashing for an hour in a hospital bed.

Bedside Manner
• Private Practice: Dr. Cooper (Paul Adelstein) goes the extra distance to bond with a little girl patient, while Addison (Kate Walsh) coaches understudy Dell (Chris Lowell) on making patients feel comfortable.
• Grey's Anatomy: Dr. Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) has a voice so gentle even bad news sounds manageable.
• Hopkins: A vasectomy reversal has Dr. Boyle overjoyed. Saving patients lives inspires Dr. Quinones-Hinojosa. "This is what keeps me going everyday," he says.

Attractive Quotient
• Private Practice: Walsh is a stunner, while Drs. Bennett (Taye Diggs) and Wilder (Tim Daly) are no chumps in that department, either.
• Grey's Anatomy: Let's just put it this way: Who isn't looking good at Seattle Grace?
• Hopkins: These doctors won't be getting a call from Hollywood -- but they're in the real practice of saving lives.

Tell us: Did you watch the Hopkins premiere? How does it compare with Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice?

This week, ABC rolls out some summer shows in prime time that won't make you work up a sweat trying to figure out what's going on. Get a nice cool drink and get ready to settle into the sofa with your family. Here's what's coming up:

Tuesday, 7PM: Wipeout is the first game show this week. 24 contestants will go through some sort of challenge (The Dreadmill & Dirty Balls among them). The last man or woman standing earns $50,000. One of the producers worked on "Fear Factor," though I don't see "contestants will eat gross things" listed in any of the show's information.

Tuesday, 8PM: I Survived a Japanese Game Show is up next. Now, all you have to do is go to YouTube and search "human tetris" to see why I'm excited about this show. I really want to go to Japan just to watch TV. Instead, I'm saving cash by watching this show. Ten Americans go to Japan to, you guessed it, compete on Japanese Game shows. The winner takes home $250,000. Keep your eyes peeled for Meaghan Cooper. She's from San Antonio (and google her name to find out why DWTS's Karina Smirnoff doesn't like her). We're not allowed to interview her until her time on the show is up, so you'll have to get your fix on Tuesdays.

Tuesday, 9PM: The Outsiders is a new ABC News series. It explores the usually secret lives of real people. The first episode takes us into the Amish community, where the teens experience Rumspringa - the opportunity to live in the outside world and decide whether they should return to their Amish ways. BTW: there was a fascinating documentary about this six years ago. I recommend it.

Wednesday, 9PM: Primetime Crime is another ABC News series. It takes a look at real crimes and uncovers new evidence, presumably to help solve the crimes.

Thursday, 9PM: Hopkins will help Grey's Anatomy fans get through the summer. It's 1,500 hours of film in six hour-long episodes. Expect high drama from real cases, and drama outside the ER.

Friday, 7PM: Dance Machine might keep your mind in dancing shape until DWTS returns in the fall. Six ordinary people square-off in a dance competition. The studio audience whittles it down to the top two and the winner will get $100,000. It sounds a lot like a day in the life of our newsroom - only there's no cash prize.

So there you have it. New shows to entertain you while you try to avoid a heat stroke. Don't thank me. Thank ABC.

Getting around
Cab lines ups are long and takes forever, you are better off paying a limo outside the front doors of the hotel. Most of these limo's are looking for short trips and you can negotiate a classy ride for as low as $25 for a regular SUV or sedan that fits 4 people or a 10 passenger for only $45 total price.

If you prefer to drive, ALWAYS PARK IN VALET, unless it is a Saturday night or a Fight night in Vegas, then you are best to park in the parkade as valet will take you forever to get your car out.

How to save money and go drinking
So you want to go out and enjoy the nightlife, but first you want to "Pre-Sip"
before you hit the clubs. We all know the clubs and ultra lounges charge $12 to $18 per drink (the average person cannot afford that each night), so our Nite Tours secret is to go to the Island Bars in the Casino where they have the video poker. Put $20 into the machine and Tip $5 to the bartender as you receive your first drink. Tip him $5 every third drink and play max on the video poker, but take your time there is NO TIME LIMIT as to how long each hand on the video poker must be played and you can order drinks all night long. If you hit a few good hands you maybe up $$$ so when you cash out you get your $20 back and you tipped $20 for 10 "very Strong Drinks"…There you go, how to get drunk on $20…

Club Line Ups
If you ever see a well dressed guy on the other side of the ropes walk up to you
while you are in line, and asks "Can I help you"? that is your opportunity to tiphim (palm the money) to get into a club. This is an excellent way to by pass long line ups, however you will tip $20 to $30 per person and you will still have to pay the $40 cover, but that sure beats a 2 hour wait to get into the clubs.

Most clubs are dead inside, but they start a line up outside the club. There is nothing you can do about it. A good trick is to get to the clubs early if you are all girls or a mixed couples you will get in. If you are all guys, you might as well pack a lunch, you will be in the line up all night long. Again get to the club early, they always let all the ladies in first. Nite Tours gets into the clubs first before anyone else, and all I see in the club is WOMEN, so if you are a single guy this is PERFECT for you. it is like shooting fish in a barrel, but later on in the evening the clubs change from 80% to 30% women so work your magic early

Oh my, this show sounds sooooo interesting. And no doubt it will enable viewers the world over to not only say the name of our school correctly, but perhaps also locate it on a map. I mean, it will definitely convince them that we are so much smarter/better/cooler than those losers at Harvard, right?

I just finished reading a novel about Hopkins' writing of the Wreck of the Deutschland and about the events prompting his writing of it (described on the Recently Read page). Apart from my enjoyment of the book, it served as an occasion for me to reread the poem itself. It is a long poem, so I share here only the first verse, which offers a beautiful stand-alone morning meditation. Read it and just sit for a while with the last line.

Thou mastering me
God! giver of breath and bread;
World's strand, sway of the sea;
Lord of living and dead;
Thou hast bound bones and veins in me, fastened me flesh,
And after it almsot unmade, what with dread,
Thy doing: and dost thou touch me afresh?
Over again I feel thy finger and find thee.

As an aside, Hopkins determined to give up writing poetry when he entered the Jesuits, believing it to be too individualistic for a Jesuit. It was this poem that broke his literary silence.

     I have no idea why i do these things, it's not like anyone is going to comment, read, or even care what i have to say, but i still keep having an urge to blog just so i can look back and feel like a bit of a man still instead of having a journal under my bed. since my last 3 posts were years ago, I will reintroduce myself, my names Nick, i live in Langley, British Columbia, Canada, i make alot of spelling mistakes so bear with me. I'm 21 Years old turning 22 on June 20th. I'm an average guy, I love to go out and drink, play video games (when the girlfriend lets me) and of course, hockey. I was born in Vancouver, and havent left and have no desire to. So this will be my blog for now, and ill see what happens, as you can see it's currently 6:32a.m and i'm an insomniac, so excuse the random post times!

I've share before my love of the poetry of Gerard Manley Hopkins. I discovered yesterday that a good friend of mine shares my love for Hopkins. While what drew me to Hopkins was God's Grandeur; for my friend Joe it was As Kingfishers Catch Fire. The last part of the poem, he told me, changed his whole understanding of life. It was reading that poem that helped him realize that we are meant to see Christ in the faces of others.

Here is the poem:

As kingfishers catch fire, dragonflies draw flame;
As tumbled over rim in roundy wells
Stones ring; like each tucked string tells, each hung bell's
Bow swung finds tongue to fling out broad its name;
Each mortal thing does one thing and the same:
Deals out that being indoors each one dwells;
Selves--goes itself; myself it speaks and spells,
Crying What I do is me: for that I came.

I say more: the just man justices;
Keeps grace: that keeps all his goings graces;
Acts in God's eye what in God's eye he is--
Christ--for Christ plays in ten thousand places,
Lovely in limbs, and lovely in eyes not his
To the Father through the features of men's faces.

There is only one game left in the EPL season. A 9 month long season comes down to possibly one game. Manchester United and Chelsea are tied for 1st on points.

Unlike our sports here in America, who play a regular season and then have playoffs, the EPL season is all that counts. After 38 games which ever team has the most points will be crowned champions. There are no playoffs so every game counts.

Round 37 Review: Nothing changed in the standings, both Manchester United and Chelsea won their separate games to stay level on points. There are still 6 teams that can be relegated. Every season 3 teams in the EPL get sent down to the Championship, like (MLB - AAA.) The 3 teams that have the fewest points in the EPL will be relegated and the 3 teams in the Championship that have the most points will be promoted.

In local sports news, a window in the Hopkins Academy boys locker room was smashed by a glove. After a 7-3 defeat Hopkins players were obviously frustrated and the window was a good source to take that anger out on. Of course the window will have to be replaced and that will cost quite a few dollars. There was only one injury in the incident, Andy Blajda who was changing at his locker under the soon to be smashed window was suddenly being showered in a rain of glass, he got a tiny cut on his hand for his troubles.
