Ifra, the professional body of the news publishing industry with which I am connected, has held its eNews 2010 meeting in Eindhoven in the Netherlands between February 5 and 7.

Although most of the discussions are covered by confidentiality requirements, some perspectives on available technologies are even now in the public domain. This includes the e-reading concept promoted by Amazon, with its own device, the Kindle (click thumbnail for bigger image).

I had the opportunity to see the device and the performance of the e-ink, a new display technology that is under active development by a host of companies. More on that later.

Here I am signing off with a picture of the Kindle that I took at a demo in Eindhoven. From all accounts, the device has had a major transformative appeal in the US, and it sold out in five hours.

He aquí algunas fotos.

Two and a half days in Dublin and one and a half lifetimes stuck on the M50!.
Great to see so many

Two and a half days in Dublin and one and a half lifetimes stuck on the M50!.

Great to see so many people who seem to have at least part of the plot on the trajectory newspapers need to take in a growing digital world. Some great speakers, all with a story to tell.

Similar conferences in the past have tended towards the fantastic with limited visibility on business applications. Whilst there is still evidence of 'build it and the money will come' there seems to be greater clarity on the strategic framework. We cant leave all of the experimentation to Google but we do need to put some boundaries down if we are not to waste away the profits from our heritage activities. It looks as if those parameters are starting to be identified.

Of course there are still massive unknowns. Arguments for convergence and equally strong arguments for keeping things apart. Maybe they are both correct. Arguments for working with google, arguments against. The only thread which seems to be clear is that more collaboration and 'open source' is likely to emerge from those who 'get it' amd those who are likely to still be around in the future.
