I was totally surprised by this movie.

I thought this was another lame digital film like Happily Never After, but hey, this one was … soo geeky!

Let me share you my quick synopsis of Igor.

If you want a taste of Frankenstein and Mad Scientists, of monsters and musicals, of a gloomy but funny story, of Jaqueline and Heidi (yes that’s Jekkyl and Hyde for you), of a sudden feeling of Schadenfreude, of Annie the musicale and hypnotic machines, well you shouldn’t miss Igor.

Igor is the recently acclaimed comedy digital animated film about a life of an Igor (If you haven’t watched Frankenstein, Igor is the popular sidekick guy portrayed as an assistant of Dracula or Frankenstein). PULL ZE SWITCH!

Enter the town of Malaria, a town that has an everlasting dark cloud hovering above it. This dark cloud has hampered its industry. Because of this, the evil mayor of Malaria has organized the annual EVIL Science Fair gathering mad scientists who would invent evil inventions. Out of fear for their lives, the whole world would pay Malaria large sums of money so that the inventions would not lay havoc on them. This same money would be the prize of the Evil Science Fair. Now in this town, there are lots of Mad Scientists and each has their own Igor, assistants trained in the Igor School… and the first thing they learn in that school is that phrase they should always use in response to any mad scientist: “yezzz mastah!”

Now there’s this particular Igor who wanted to invent an evil invention. In fact he already invented several gizmos: two of those became his friends—Scamper the Existentialist Rabbit, and Brian (who actually came from a jar with a dead brain inside… Brian is a misspelling of ‘brain’). Igor wanted to say this to his master but the Mad Scientist would not believe him because Igors, they believe, can’t think. But while this Mad Scientist is testing his new invention… er the “Evil Lasagna” it exploded, leaving just an arm of the said scientist. Fearing for his life, Igor invented a long-awaited dream, a monster with life! Unfortunately so, his monster turned out to be … not evil, but EVA—an aspiring actress who couldn’t even hurt a fly. Now, an evil scientist named Dr. Schadenfreude (yeah, the infamous German word was turned into a name of a character in this film) was so jealous of Igor’s former master that he investigated and found out that there’s no Mad Scientist to be found. And worse, he found out Igor’s invention and wants to steal it… for the upcoming Science Fair.

I was really laughing so hard in the cinema while watching the whole film. I bet GEEKS made this movie… Now I will never see Annie the same way again. Haha.

The film ended with this saying: It is better to be a good nobody than an evil somebody! Now that’s what a GREAT movie is all about!

If you’re a geek, don’t miss this movie. It’s really really worth watching! :D

...anyway, this week also sees the release of House Bunny in which a Playboy Bunny teaches a bunch of sorority girls how to be themselves by Hollywood standards (i.e. be yourself as long as you look good because being yourself and looking bad means you are a freak) and raises the question of when Anna Faris and Colin Hanks will start appearing the kind of decent roles that we know they can do with their eyes closed.  Nights in Rodanthe stars Richard Gere and Diane Lane as... well you must know by now.

The Forum and The Mallard also have advanced screenings of the new animated feature Igor which features John Cusack and the ever niggling thought that these films are starting to look cheaper and cheaper.

Young Frankenstein

My favorite of Mel Brooks' films, and a good lesson in how to do a parody movie right.

A nice addition to anyone's Halloween film list. Unless your going for the more serious blood and gore horror movie. Not the genre i'd chose to watch, but when imposed I'd pick one of the old monster movie style film anyday.

I had intended to post this in time for the movie's US release date in September, but this autumn is already proving to be a busy one.

Igor is the tale of a disgruntled, hunched-backed lab assistant named, well,  Igor. Tired of being the lackey and gofer, he dreams of becoming his own master and scientist, and of course, winning the evil science fair.

With the aid of three of his experimental creations: Eva - a giant, but gentle, aspiring actress, Scamper - a cynical rabbit brought back from roadkill, and Brain, Igor must "foil an evil plot that threatens their world".

While not the most original story, the characters are fun and the animation looks great. The dialogue also promises to  be excellent with a fantastic voice cast including: John Cusack as Igor, Christian Slater, Steve Buscemi, John Cleese, Molly Shannon, Sean Hayes, Arsenio Hall and Jay Leno. Igor the graphic series currently consists of four comics, the latest was released in late August, a movie prequel graphic novel, a couple of paperback adaptations of the movie by various writers and a limited edition Official 51st Annual Evil Science Fair Program which is advertised as containing: "...the juicy statistics, destructive details, and infamous history behind all the Evil Scientist contestants and their hideously Evil inventions! Get the dish on their Igors, their girlfriends, and their deep, dark, evil secrets." Sounds delightful!

In Chuck Amuck, Chuck Jones said, and I paraphrase, they would always run the animation with the sound off because they knew that if the story could be told visually and it was funny without music, sound effects or dialogue, it would be even that much better when those elements were added.

This is truly a lost art.  I watched Igor this past week.  The movie was pretty good compared to today's standards for what passes for great animation.  I put on my "visual comedy glasses" when going in since this topic was hot on my mind.  For me, there were only two shots in the entire film that made me laugh.  The rest of my laughs were from witty dialogue.  Much different from this Warners short, Rabbit Seasoning.

As expected, Eagle Eye, the new thriller from Disturbia director D.J. Caruso took the top spot at the US box-office this weekend, making more than 29 million bucks. The romantic comedy Nights In Rodanthe came in second while last week's big winner Lakeview Terrace dropped to third place. Finishing up the top 5 are the Christian-themed drama Fireproof, which did incredibly well consider its theater count, and Burn After Reading, which is holding quite well. Interestingly, Miracle At St. Anna, the World War II film from Inside Man director Spike Lee flopped big time, entering at number 9 with only three and a half million.

Ascrivo le cause della latitanza in un non meglio specificato "problema familiare", perché non son cose di cui parlare in questa sede, per pudore mio, per rispetto alla mia famiglia, e anche per evitare un imbarazzo vostro. Passiamo dunque oltre, e veniamo al tema caldo della puntata (acc, si vede che son ricominciati i programmi tv autunnali, mi son sentita Carlo Conti per un attimo. Ma solo un attimo. Io sono troppo chiara di pelle!).

Quale modo migliore per ricominciare poteva esserci per me di questo? Un esempio classico del post acrimoniesco, una fusione di humour nonsense, citazioni cinematografiche, scene di vita familiare, strafalcioni. Agitare e servire ben caldo.

Oggi mi sento come Stefano Bartezzaghi di ritorno dalle ferie (sempre che lui ci vada, in ferie, e che dopo si senta così): in attesa di ingranare, intanto che le rotelline ripartono, vi pongo un quesito enigmistico. Un rebus, ecco.

Soluzione dopo il jump

Siamo invasi dai grilli. Certo, non come qualche anno fa, che era proprio una specie di allarme ambientale, per cui ogni sera ne avevamo almeno una decina nella doccia e qualche volta ne ho trovati pure sul letto (volevo trasferirmi). Ma una piccola invasione c'è. Il fenomeno è tenuto sotto controllo da quella sema della mia cucciola, che esattamente come i bambini piccoli mette in bocca e ciuccia tutto ciò che si trova a tiro. Che siano i miei capelli, le mie dita, la mia maglietta, il mio alluce, un cetriolo, un pomodoro verde, una melanzana, un bastoncino, un sasso, un pezzo di legno, la coda dell'altro cane o i grilli, non fa alcuna differenza.

(Voi direte "Ma sta soluzione?". E arrivo, abbiate pazienza, era la saspens, accidenti, sennò che Carlo Conti sono?)

Mia nonna, esasperata dall'invasione degli insetti salterini, una sera mi ha detto:

- "Ah ma io mi sono stancata eh? Domani prendo la carta adesiva così quando ci passano sopra ci restano attaccati! Che tanto quello che sto usando adesso non conta niente!"

- "Che cos'è?"

- "Baigor!"

Hoje é aniversário do Rogério!

The newest case in point is the Indie animated feature Igor.  I hear it's great.  I plan to see it myself. And I applaud this film for the very fact that a small independent studio made it.  Below is a model sheet I grabbed from the October 2008 copy of Animation Magazine.  Below that, I screen grabbed a variety of shots from the Igor trailer.  I'll let you decide what you like better, but when I compare them I can't help but notice the inability of cg to really "push" the expression.  This is because cg is more like digital puppetry and is limited in it's ability to squash and stretch the character.  Take a look at the profile sketch of Igor on the model sheet.  Re-creating that expression in cg is impossible.  Even the head below the profile sketch is a good example.  The cg model cannot open it's mouth to make that mouth shape.

Anyhoo, character appeal is something I'm learning.  I can spot it, but drawing characters with appeal is a different story.  I'm working on developing characters with appeal in my animation.

خلاصه داستان

در یک شهر که یک سری دانشمند دیوانه به همراه دستیار های گوژپشتشان به نام ایگود ها زندگی میکنند یکی از این ایگور ها آرزوی دانشمند شدن رو داشته و میخواسته در مسابقه اول بشه اما دانشمند هی بهش زور میگفته یه روز دانشمند میمیره و آیگور با کمک دوستاش که یک خرگوش به نام اسکینر که قبلآ مرده بوده و آیگور زندش کرده. و یک مغز داخل یک شیشه که اسمش مغز هست به کمک این دو اختراعش میخواسته یه موجود بیرحم بسازه اما موجودر از آب درمیاد که آزارش به مورچه هم نمیرسه!
