Graphic Design: Designing for Print - Resolution

When working in Photoshop, one of the things to note before a new canvas is started would be resolution. Resolution here refers to the number of dots used in an image, per inch or what is often termed as ‘dpi’. For an image to print in good quality on paper, it needs to have at least 300 dpi. Generally, this is set as the standard and would bring about a good finish for say, a magazine. For newspapers, the dpi can be brought down an acceptable level of 200 or even 150 dpi for the same image. That’s because the quality of the print also depends on the quality of the paper being used, and the better the paper, the lesser the spread of the ink across the paper during the printing process. So generally, it is good to take note of resolution when preparing work – source images from any stock library, or the settings on the camera and the canvas in Photoshop. The finished image can always be resized downwards for lower quality prints or even screen, but it will be a headache if it needs to be enlarged.

Even though the rabenwelten blog is currently lagging behind its usual daily schedule, I have by no means been lazy. Far from it. I am currently working on the Generation Z setting for D6, yet another Vampire Live project in Berlin I had to get out of my system, I have a SSDC artwork deadline to keep (you can see the smallest fraction of the picture in progress here, to the left) and have the honor to work on a short picture series for the Hellas RPG (Greeks in Space), too.

Apart from that, I have an adventure to prepare for sunday and a dayjob (and a cat, and two budgies, and a girlfriend (not necessarily in that order) and-and-and ... and high blood pressure (I wonder from what?).

Anyway, just wanted to drop you a line. And to say that I have uploaded some new pix to the Art of AAS page. Enjoy!

You'll find new pix for a preview of Transfer there, a new setting for the Universal Roleplaying Game URPG. The preview file was distributed at a RPG convention in Germany and can be found either on the above mentioned URPG website or here:

Avoid Problems when Outlining in Illustrator: A Great Tip!

So you've created an awesome design for your client in Adobe Illustrator, only now they want to change the last line of copy....Oops...you already converted the text to outlines so it would be press-ready.

Well, fret no more! I just found a great article on what to do when this happens, since there is no way to undo outlines in Illustrator...which means you'd have to reacreate your entire design from scratch!!! (*yikes!!!*) And yes this has happened to me several times, so I speak from experience. Hopefully, with this pointer, we'll all be safe from this frustrating part of illustrator!! :)

Avoid problems after outlining text... before!

The most important fact about text outlining is that it can’t be undone, that is, there’s no “undo text outlines” command. Sure there are workarounds in case you have to do undo it, but they are only available for limited time – once you close the file, the workarounds are lost.

If the file is for your use only, maybe you won’t even need to worry about this – you might as well not create the outlines -, but if it is for someone else you must always have a way of modifying text in the future, as people – and specially paying clients – constantly change their minds.

Typos appear, better phrases and slogans are created, new visual representation is necessary, and so on… Are you really going to redo all the work? Definitely not!

So here are a few tips on how to avoid doing free work (because no one is going to pay you for your mistake) or just a bad headache:

Before creating the outlines:

Make a copy of the layer that has the text and hide this layer; or
make a copy of the text and paste it somewhere on Illustrator’s huge pasteboard, that is, the area outside the artboard’s borders. Simply Alt + click + drag the text and you’ll get a copy; or
make a copy of the file.

In case there’s a lot of text to select, avoid extra clicks by going to Select » Object » Text Objects.

After creating the outlines (in case you forgot to do any of the steps above):

Do not close the file.
If you’ve done more work since converting the text, save the file, undo everything until you reach the unconverted text, copy the text, close the file without saving it, open the file again and paste the text (Ctrl + F to paste in place).
