A recent article of mine has proven very popular. It discussed the recent epidemic of “rogue

A recent article of mine has proven very popular. It discussed the recent epidemic of "rogue" antivirus and anti-spyware programs that is plaguing the Internet these days -- such as Virus Response Lab 2009, Antivirus XP, and -- literally -- hundreds of others.

These programs are really the tools used by cyber-criminals to infect your machine with malware... not clean it up, as you're led to believe. (The article link [above] has a video demonstrating a rogue program.) As a bonus, you're asked to provide your credit card number to buy the "full" (or, "Pro") version.
What do you think criminals do with those cc#'s????

Regular readers are aware that I frequently post 'alerts' to the latest scams arriving via e-mail. Spam.

Here the latest, a classic phish:
from: AccountRobot_donotreply@e-gold.com
Subject: Notification of e-gold account update

What I'd like you to notice is the red circle next to the hyperlink .

That is the WOT (Web Of Trust) toolbar's (automatically integrated into my Gmail, because I'm viewing it in a browser) website rating.
I'm no rocket scientist.. but I am pretty sure red means "bad".. and/or, "stop".

This website rating -- with its easy to understand color code -- tool can really save you a lot of pain and loss from phishing and poisoned websites; because the criminals are going to tremendous efforts to make their scams look legit (and to poison truly legit sites).
I'll say it again-- the Internet today is a very insecure and dangerous place!

There are many anti-phishing tools and plug-ins and filters to choose from (some are built into your browser, if you enable them) but if you want a quick, clean, easy to understand warning tool-- give the WOT toolbar a try.

Children fill water containers in a former Baghdad army base, now a slum. Cholera has infected many supplies

A deadly outbreak of cholera in Iraq is being blamed on a scandal involving corrupt officials who failed to sterilise the local drinking water because they were bribed to buy chlorine from Iran that was long past its expiration date.

The centre of the epidemic is in Babil province, south of Baghdad, in the marshy lands east of the Euphrates river, not far from the ruins of ancient Babylon. In Baghdad, where half the six million population has no access to clean drinking water, people are now drinking only bottled or boiled water.

The Iraqi Prime Minister, Nouri al-Maliki, has appointed a commission of inquiry to find out why ineffective chlorine was being used. He is also refusing to release three officials under arrest despite demands from the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq (ISCI) to which they are linked. In the town of al-Madhatiya, in southern Babil, a councillor involved in buying the chlorine was reportedly released after militiamen connected to ISCI intimidated police into freeing him.

The scandal over the contract is becoming a test case of the Maliki government's willingness to tackle the pervasive corruption in Iraq where officials see their jobs primarily as a way of enriching themselves through bribes. It is also a test of his ability to exercise central control over ISCI and parties which have been hitherto dominant outside Baghdad.

Cholera is endemic in Iraq but last year there was an epidemic in northern Iraq which was far more serious than anything seen for years. Some 4,700 people, mostly in Sulaimaniyah province, were struck.

This year, the government hoped to stop another outbreak of the disease by repairing shattered water and sanitation stations and putting chlorine in the water supply. An Iraqi government official, who did not want his name published, said the Health Ministry bought $11m (£6.4m) worth of chlorine from Iran for use in the provinces of Babil, Diwaniyah and Kerbala, all on the Euphrates river south of Baghdad.

In the latter two provinces, officials noticed that the chlorine was old and the time during which it could be employed effectively had expired, and refused to use it. But in Babil the chlorine was put in the fresh water supply stations at al-Madhatiyah, al-Hashimiyah and al-Qasim, south-east of the provincial capital, al-Hillah. Soon 222 people were confirmed as having cholera in Babil, in a total of 420 cases of whom seven have died.

The scandal is a reflection of the the way Iraqi politics works. The ruling parties monopolise jobs and contracts. It is impossible to find work at any level in most ministries without a letter of commendation from one of the parties in the government. The enormous Iraqi government apparatus, employing some two million people, is a patronage machine. There are now more state officials than under Saddam, but it is unable to supply electricity, food rations and clean water, despite Iraq's $80bn in accumulated oil revenues.

The power base of ISCI, the most powerful Shia religious party, is the Shia provinces of southern Iraq between Baghdad and Basra. Political parties are expected to protect their members from arrest. This explains what happened next. The officials arrested in Babil belonged to the Badr Organisation, the militia wing of ISCI. Leaders of the party demanded their release but Mr Maliki refused. Badr militants then turned up at a police station in al-Madhatiya and forced the police to release a councillor apparently involved in purchasing the chlorine.

But the grand Shia coalition which won more than half the seats in the Iraqi parliament in the last election in December 2005 has broken up. Mr Maliki is trying to build up his own Dawa party, using the resources of the state.

He has deepening differences with ISCI which won most of the southern Iraqi provinces. They accuse him of trying to create a power base in what was previously their territory by paying the tribes who belong to government-sponsored "support councils" in southern Iraq. His aim is to get his own candidates elected in the provincial and parliamentary elections next year. "These will be crucial in deciding who will hold power in Iraq in future," said one senior Iraqi official.

Control of oil revenues gives Mr Maliki a crucial card. Iraq has 50 to 60 per cent unemployment and most jobs are with the state. Salaries of state employees have risen sharply. But the government remains largely dysfunctional aside from its growing military strength. Iraqi journalists are encouraged and paid to write "good news" stories. In Baghdad, people notice there is little mention of the cholera in the media. This provokes fear that the epidemic may be worse than the government admits.

After the invasion: Services in Iraq

* Before the war, Baghdad had electricity between 16 and 24 hours a day. This has dropped to just under 12.

* There was no national mobile phone network, now there are at least 12 million subscribers.

* In April 2007 there were 261,000 internet subscribers. Before the war this number was estimated as 4,500.

* Of the 34,000 doctors registered in pre-war Iraq, 20,000 fled, 2,000 have been killed and 250 kidnapped.

* Registered cars more than doubled, to 3.1 million by October 2005.

From: investigation@fdic.gov

Dear bank account owner,

Funds wired into your account are stolen from innocent account holders through Identity Theft. Please check your account statement (the statement is attached to this letter) and contact your bank account manager.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation

POP QUIZ: What's wrong with this picture? (multiple choice)
a: It came on a Sunday, and the Gov't doesn't work on Sundays.
b: There's no such thing as "innocent" account holders.
c: dot exe's are "executables" (aka "scripts" and "programs") and make things happen on machines.. maybe bad things.

Answer: C

Folks, this is a really old attack method, and it preys upon the fact that users are unobservant (won't notice the .exe) and uneducated (don't know what a .exe is).

Sadly, those two facts really don't change. And so someone is trying this old trick again. The attachment "statement.exe" is a "downloader virus".
Open the attachment and be "pwn3d".

When we look at this world and its inhabitants we can see the rapid progress and strides our people are making .

The population is being refined and we are undergoing progress in a certain way .

Millions of people are becoming highly educated and are becoming super specialists in their fields .

Sadly the so called super specialists are ignorant towards the basic principles of their respective fields .

Example :

The Case Of Crude Oil .

Crude Oil is the third most important commodity on the face of the earth after Air & Water people need crude Oil .

All the financial experts in this world yet nobody knows how to fix the price of this essential Commodity often refferd to as Black Gold .

The Recent Financial Turmoil Suffered Globally are directly due to the rise in Price Of Oil .

IE The Rise from US $20 to US $147 .

The increase is astronomical !

The money lost by the global economy has been drained directly by the Oil producing countries .

With a very simple calculation we can find out the depth of this problem & also the reason behind the Global Economic Meltdown .

US $20 Multiply X Barrels of Global Oil Consumption .

As Opposed to

US $140 Multiply X Barrels of Global Oil Consumption .

The Difference amount is the money that has been drained directly From the Non-Oil producing countries in to the Coffers of the Oil Producing Countries .

There are many other colossal damages to the global economy directly & in-directly just from the Oil Markets this Is Just the Tip Of the Ice Berg .

This is just Like a disease for example when a human body is infected by cancer till demise of the host body the infection will drain and enjoy all of the host bodies vital resources .

The Cancer thus multiplies .

Atlast when the host dies the cancer cells die with the host it was draining .

The cancer cells will end up in the coffin with the Host Body .

Both the Hunter and the prey will become Extinct .

SO WAKE UP FOOLS !

Enjoy .

Regards .

i know i'm like a million years late with this but it's been one of the funnest things i've worked on to date so i want to write about it. it was for the launch of my genius friend Lauren Beukes's first novel - Moxyland - no doubt you've seen the name on my site before. anyway the launch was totally atypical to a normal book launch, as we tried to bring the sci fi world of Moxyland to life in the Book Lounge cnr Roeland and Buitenkant streets in Gardens. This is how you experienced the launch if you were attending:

1. You arrive at the venue to have pamphlets shoved in your face. Looking at the pamphlets, you see it's a protest against genetic engineering on animals, specifically the genetic enhancement of police dogs, which are called Aitos. Aitos have articificial and ruthless intelligence, and are used as crowd control in Moxyland.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Anelisa Phewa protests the plight of "Sick Puppies" - bio-engineered police dogs at the Moxyland book launch in Cape Town. (For full text of the flyer go to www.moxyland.com) "][/caption]

2. You are then greeted by a Door Bitch who asks for your name and checks it against a list. If you weren't on the list she says to you: "I'm sorry, this entrance is for corporates only, please use the civilians entrance round the side." She directs you round the corner of the building.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="331" caption="Door Bitch - only nice to corporates."][/caption]

3. If you are classified as "Civilian" and you have to use the entrance round the corner, you are met by an uncouth and seriously annoying guy who looks like he might slit your throat when you blink your eyes. This is because in Moxyland, the good life, a fair life, is property only of people who work for corporates. Civilians have it rough. Sorry hippies!

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="331" caption="Stefan ruthlessly and relentlessly harasses those bolshy Non-Corporates who think they can just waltz into the event at the Moxyland book launch. He also manages to offend Andre Brink. Hi Five. He also manages to offend Andre Brink. Hi Five. " width="331" height="500" />[/caption]

4. If you make it through the corporates entrance, you are greeted by 2 funkified Moxy appropriate ladies who give you a test tube and advise you to get tested downstairs, because "you might be infected". This alludes to the highly contagious virus within the book that is activated as a means of crowd control, and a way to reign in the feisty citizens who protest to the way things are.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="331" caption="Lauwrisa Blaauw on Ghost stamp duty and Kristi Launders (with skull necklace) greet those Corporate guests effusively. " width="331" height="500" />[/caption]

5. You then descend to the clinic, which is downstairs in the basement, where your specimen in the test tube gets tested. We had tubes that reacted chemically and turned green and smoked a bit, and then we had non-reactive tubes. If your tube reacted you were given an immunisation shot, which was a big friendly syringe filled with green Apple Sours.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="500" caption="Doctors Peter and Sam prepare to test specimens for signs of infection. Remember the Health Dept cares about you. Remember the Health Dept cares about you. " width="500" height="331" />[/caption]

6. As an opening promo, we had pieces of "evidence" lying around for guests to collect. The first to collect all 3 received a Moxy toy and book, and a drink for their efforts. Though the first person to get all the evidence was a kid, so there was no drink.

[caption id="" align="alignnone" width="331" caption="Animator Tim Wang has found evidence that something sinister is afoot in Moxyland.
7. Rob van Vuuren (Crazy Monkey, The Most Amazing Show) got into character as the CEO of the company featured in the book, and let loose an amazing speech.
8. And a good time was had by all! The venue was packed, and it must be made known, The Book Lounge are pioneers in their field and are far more supportive of local authors than ALL of the local publishers that I've dealt with.

I totally forgot I had promised stories: The Swimming, Barefeet, and Mouth stories.

These will not be sexy stories.

For the sake of this taking place nearly one month ago, I am going to have to lump them all together. Truth be told, they all happened at the same time, that same night. There is no need to make chapters. There is just the bizarre occurrence of happening to visit my dentist earlier that week for a routine cleaning that you, the reader, should note. But more about that later.

I was going home for Labor Day weekend after three months of living like a disease in New York, sweating and cursing and drinking and kissing my way through the summer I took only two vacation days. The humidity had taken its toll on me: I was weak, run-down, chronically hung over, and five pounds under my usual weight. I know this because when I arrived back home, everyone thought it would be particularly delightful to tell me how skinny I looked. And when you haven't eaten anything but oatmeal in days because you're too hung over to reach for the microwave, it isn't necessarily the compliment you're looking for. Though, I'm not sure what would have been better. Perhaps: Doll, your skin is looking so bright and clean-scrubbed today! (It wasn't.)

I planned on coming up Friday afternoon, but there I was, drunk off my ass hours after the original time frame I had set with my mother. It's wasn't my fault: a band of coworkers and I ended up at a dive in Hell's Kitchen drinking shots of bourbon and taking hits off someone's pipe on Ninth Avenue. I was swimming in my limbs. We went back to the booth, back to our liquor, and one of my coworkers laughed at me.

"You haven't said a word for at least ten minutes. In the six months I've known you I've never seen you so quiet." His lips cracked open into an evil-looking half smile. "You must be so fucking high."

It was true. I was stoned and drunk as hell and my cheek hurt.

I had been to the dentist that week. He picked at the crowning head of the one wisdom tooth I had and teased me about only be a quarter smart enough. He told me to get the wisdom tooth pulled or else it might make me even stupider. The dentist had leaned on that word: stupider, and I couldn't even smile because his hands were wedged into my jaw. I made a noise and drooled.

It was time to leave the bar. I had a train to catch that I had missed hours ago. I took the L home and rather than feeling the normal amounts of paranoia, I couldn't help smiling from under the cloak of my oversized ironic sunglasses. Everyone sneered back like lizards. I entered my apartment with a hiccup, slammed the door and crawled over the clothes on my bed to hold onto the pillows. The room was spinning, but never mind, I had to get upstate. I threw the clothes in my weekender bag and added an extra fistful of underwear to the bounty. Then I was off, in a cab, on my way to Grand Central to catch the 7-something train towards Poughkeepsie.

I fell asleep on the train and woke up only a minute or two before my stop.

I lurched off the platform and into my mother's Volvo. The air smelled like the green crap that floated to the top of the Hudson river up there, whatever that smells like.

"You look great!" my mom chirped.

I croaked a response, and felt the gums on the left side of my mouth burning. Perhaps I had brushed my teeth too aggressively.

My mom turned onto Main Street and we went into my dad's bar and restaurant. My dad kissed me gingerly on my forehead and snuck outside to smoke his Newports. I ordered a bowl of soup and picked away the potatoes and corn. They hurt too much. I waved off the offer of wine or scotch and made tiny small talk with the wait staff and then old friends from high school crowded on bar stools. I volunteered to drive home and told my mom to get a few glasses of wine in her. I poured water and chewed ice cubes.

I love when cold pieces of rocky ice run down my throat.

The next morning I felt like I had been punched in the jaw. The gums in the back around my wisdom tooth were swollen and I was having trouble opening all the way. Nevermind. I had things to do. I ate mush for breakfast in the form of crushed blueberries and melted cheese and drove to the liquor store, the A&P, and the pharmacy. I bought a bottle of vodka, some ice cream sandwiches, and a huge tube of Orajel which I promptly squeezed into the back of my mouth. My mom watched me. I drooled. "I feel like I swallowed a gram of cocaine," I mumbled. She refused to crack a smile and rolled her eyes.

Like I said, I had things to do. My friend Mark was having his annual Labor Day party, so I gathered my party favors and bathing suit and walked up the hill in my neighborhood to his backyard.

My old friends from were all there, already drinking and passing joints around. Mark's mom was spreading out hamburgers and cold pasta salad on the deck. I clutched the Orajel and asked for Tylenol. I rubbed my cheek and grimaced. She handed me a handful of pills and a shot. I downed everything graciously and opened my vodka, which I had planned on sharing.

I was never any good at sharing.

Fast forward a few hours and I'm jumping in the swimming pool by myself, floating on my back, turning summersaults and wiping water out of my eyes. I sit on the side, kicking my feet slowly, murmuring to Mark: "I don't like swimming, you know, it's just that I can't go swimming in New York, even if I wanted to, so you see I just had to go swimming. So come swimming with me. You don't have to tell anyone, but I have to, I have to, just because I can, and it's beautiful."

I clutch the bottle of vodka in my fingers and take huge swigs from it, wiping vodka off my lips and hair and dribbling it into the pool water.

I am spinning again.

I wake up. What time is it? Where am I?

I bolt upright. It's pitch black. I'm on Mark's couch. Someone on the other side is snoring. Someone on the floor is thrashing around just enough to know we're all alive.

Fuck. Fuck my face, my mouth hurts so much it's on fire. I feel like I've been kicked, or wounded, or stung by a nest of wasps. I am burning hot and shivering. I am feverish, and something is wrong. I sneak out of the living room in my bathing suit, half-wrapped in my black dress, the same black dress I wore all weekend, because I had neglected to pack anything but fistfuls of underwear. I find my handbag but can't find my flipflops anywhere. Fuck it. I decide to leave anyway.

I open the sliding glass doors and let the cool air rush against my swollen face. My face! It feels swollen, and I can't even move my mouth. On my way out of Mark's house, I pass the make-shift bar set up outside. I grab a carton of warm lemonade originally intended to be mixed with the vodka and chug the entire carton. I wipe my lips, moan, and make my way down the splintered wood steps.

I walk the half-mile home with no shoes on. The pebbles tracing the blacktop hill imbed into my feet so that with every step a new pain registers in my nervous system and somehow radiates up to my mouth. I eventually move to the grass. The pieces are wet and slick. I only fall twice.

When I arrive home I crumble onto the rug and cry. Grass is everywhere and dirty footprints cake all over the hardwood floors. It looks like there was a struggle, or my dead dog somehow came back to claim on old chew toy.

I am hungover and burning with fever. I find a jug of grape juice from the fridge and drink half of it straight from the container. Then I go upstairs and sit next to the toilet. I have to vomit, but I can't open my mouth. In fact, my mouth hurts so much that the thought of acidic vomit passing through it is enough to set off another round of tears.

I lie on the rug in the bathroom sobbing for hours. I can see my face in the mirror. It looks like I stuffed a wad of gauze in my mouth. My cheek has ballooned out and my ear is throbbing.

When the sun creeps through the skylight, the bathroom door opens. It is my mom. She is shocked. I pick up my head off the rug and moan, through tears, that my wisdom tooth is infected, that I have a fever, that it's Sunday but I need to go to the hospital before I die.

My mother calls the dentist who calls me in an antibiotic. My wisdom tooth is most certainly infected, he explains. Pericoronitis. Not uncommon, but painful, and it sounds like mine's one step away from something serious.

I am delirious. I am covered in grass and grape juice and vodka and dirt, my mouth a cesspool of Orajel and drool. I look up at my mother with shining eyes and thank god I am home, home, and my mom will take care of me. "I'm so sorry," I whisper to her, still feverish. "I never should have smoked all that pot."

Here’s a twist on online virus scanners - you can have any specific computer file (files are restricted to a maximum of 10 megabytes), scanned for nasties by thirty five diverse online scanners all in one go.

VirusTotal.com offers this amazing free virus and malware online scan service, to the Internet community in the spirit of trying to keep us all safer on the increasingly more dangerous Internet.

To take advantage of this service, simply upload a file that you’re uncertain of to Virus Total, or as an alternative submit your suspicious file to Virus Total by email. What could be simpler?

Quick facts:

Free, independent service

Use of multiple antivirus engines

Real-time automatic updates of virus signatures

Detailed results from each antivirus engine

Real time global statistics

Keep in mind however; you still require an appropriate local defense system including a firewall (either software or hardware), a sound and effective malware suite (including anti-virus and spyware).

It’s important to be aware that anti-malware programs, including online scanners that rely on a definition database to identify malware files, can often be behind the curve in recognizing the newest threats.

So in addition to the “normal” system protection you have installed locally, I strongly recommend that you download and install ThreatFire 3, free from PC Tools. This type of anti-malware application works by using heuristics, or behavioral analysis, to identify newer threats. Current reports indicate this application has a 90% success rate in stopping malware in it's tracks.

The one thing we know for sure about today’s malware is, it’s very smart. It’s so smart that

The one thing we know for sure about today’s malware is, it’s very smart. It’s so smart that it often recreates its own component parts even if it has been deleted. How smart is that?

Today’s malware can write itself into multiple parts of the operating system and in many cases it can hide it’s files, registry entries, running process and services, making the infection virtually invisible.

Highly experienced computer users’ have come to realize that the Internet is alive with predators intent on installing damaging programs, (Spyware, adware, viruses and Trojans), on vulnerable computer systems.

However, the sad reality is, the majority of computer users are undereducated when it comes to recognizing the dangers and threats that the Internet poses to their computers, and to their personal privacy.

The installation of such malware invariable leads to a critically disabled PC, or in the worst case scenario, allows hackers access to important personal and financial information.

There are plenty of good anti-malware products, but no one anti-malware tool is likely to identify and remove all of the millions of rogue malware that infest the cyber world. One of my Internet friends, a Professor of University level Computer Sciences, frequently reminds me “Too much security is still not enough”. Sadly, he is right.

So to ensure maximum safety, it’s important to have layered defenses in the ongoing fight against malware. As part of the mix of security solutions, online scanners offer an extra layer of protection that’s required in the current Internet environment.

Online Scanner Benefits:

Generally fast and easy to use

Threat signatures and heuristic detection algorithms are always up to date

Provides deep scanning of archive files, runtime packed executables and email messages

Can detect malware that some AV solutions cannot detect

Avoids conflicts with existing security software

Acts as a double-check on the accuracy of your onboard AV solutions

Disadvantages:

Fewer scanning options than locally installed AV solutions

Not all scanners disinfect after finding malware

The following are Online Scanners that have developed a good reputation for accuracy; be sure to read the Terms of Use or Privacy Statements carefully.

Panda NanoScan

As I continuously point out on this Blog, the following are actions you must take to protect your computer system:

When surfing the web: Stop. Think. Click

Don’t open unknown email attachments

Don’t run programs of unknown origin

Disable hidden filename extensions

Keep all applications (including your operating system) patched

Turn off your computer or disconnect from the network when not in use

Disable Java, JavaScript, and ActiveX if possible

Disable scripting features in email programs

Make regular backups of critical data

Make a boot disk in case your computer is damaged or compromised

Turn off file and printer sharing on the computer.

Install a personal firewall on the computer.

Install anti-virus/anti-spyware software and ensure it is configured to automatically update when you are connected to the Internet

Ensure the anti-virus software scans all e-mail attachments

Install Web of Trust, or a similar browser add-on

Wow, it's been a whirlwind week for sure.

So, last Wednesday I had my interview at the community mental health clinic. I applied for 2 jobs and got one that I initially didn't want but upon reflection? I think the HR dude did exactly the right thing. I'm now, ahem, the Case Aide (the only one) for Intensive Children's Services. You're going, what the hell is that? Yeah, that's what I said to HR dude, too, hah. What I'll be doing is working with foster kids aged 3-18, sometimes taking them to court-scheduled meetings with their biological parents, observing their behavior & making sure they're sticking to treatment protocol by way of gentle interrogation. The part that really makes me waver is the nature of the problems these kids have... during our discussion of "professional boundaries" I was told about 5 yr old kids who, if touched, will immediately think they're going to be sexually assaulted because that's all they know. Touching = pain. Fortunately it's the therapist's job to break through that terrible mindset, I'm the one who gives the therapist the out-in-the-real-world observations he/she is unable to make. On the other side of the professional boundaries coin are the severely mentally handicapped kids whose only means of communication is touch... fortunately I have lots of people & access to charts to ascertain proper protocol for each child. There's a 14 yr old boy who has a rich history of arson, rape, and one murder... you can bet that one tripped me out & there's plenty more like him. Hello, world.

I was a little disappointed at first because I wanted to work with adult outpatients or addicts but no, dude puts me with the toughest kids our county has to offer. Every child I work with has been taken from their biological parents for one reason or another, all of them abused in some fashion. It'll toughen me up for sure but damn, I'm glad that I only have to observe & enforce court decisions - like, if Uncle Dan isn't supposed to be in the room then sorry folks, meeting is over, I report back to the Case Manager & they call the court. I can't wait for the day when I get verbally abused by bio-families for not giving them their way... time to hone my conflict resolution skills, huh? :D

How can I not mention Barbara & her most fantastic clan visiting on Thursday & being consumed with visuals of breaking Luigi's nuts? Thursday was a day of memory, I want more of those with my friends. (jen?)

Then I got sick. Really fucking sick. Got some bactroban for this impetigo-like outbreak on my lips, a crapload of blood work done which showed a big zero for anything wrong, & a phone consult this afternoon to discuss the results. What does my doctor tell me? He's referring me to the sleep clinic because he's suspecting sleep apnea. HUH? Yeah, I've got deep fatigue... but I'm not sleeping well at night & I'm sure that's attributed to this persistent low-grade fever that has me drenching sweating one minute & freezing cold the next. I don't snore (unless I'm wasted, hah), GOB has never mentioned anything ever sleep apnea-like occurring in our 19yrs together, I'm not getting the connection. Anyway, at least my thyroid levels were still normal (I've had a small goiter for a few yrs now), glucose is awesome (I have rampant diabetes in my family), and no liver or kidney maladies in sight. Not happy about this sudden hypertension but I'm gonna blame it on the coffee I had before my appointment. :D I know, not smart, but it smelled soooooo good.

I've learned some great shit this week. Here's a sampling.

---+--- There's this dude I know who's being forced to look for a job, his time is being clocked in the same building I sorta work in for the time being. We were watching this video in training (which is apparently NOT orientation but I'll be damned if I can tell the difference)... the lecturer, Randy Pausch, died of pancreatic cancer on 07/25/2008. Dude, after having impressed me with his opinion that kids get bathed too much these days & that kids need germs to stay healthy (I swear no lie), apparently didn't hear what cancer killed him. He chimes in after the video & goes "He probably died of lung cancer. Cigarettes will kill you fuckers, you know. That's why I gave up cigarettes for meth. You don't need to smoke as much and there's less chemicals you're inhaling."

---+--- On the bus to my dr's appointment on Monday - GOB 'n I are striving to reduce our carbon mittprints little by little, giving up the car is huge & proving to be rather rewarding - there was a most interesting conversation behind us on our way to Silverdale. This Woman & her Friend went to a bar. Both get fucked up, Woman runs over Friend in the parking lot of the bar. Woman goes to jail, Friend won't talk to her anymore. Woman gets out of jail, runs into Friend at a party (this time not literally) & they get fucked up together (again). Woman and Friend get loaded on tequila & by the end of the night they're pals again. The brother on the bus that Woman was relating this story to succinctly summarized the ordeal by stating, "Well, if you drink tequila shots wif summbuddy, they gotta forgive you, yanno."

---+--- If you work in a childcare facility & one of the rules for child misbehavior is to take a "time out" in the corner beanbag chair facing the other children? And you don't agree with this policy because you think the child should be ostracized & ridiculed for some sick reason? Here's a hint... don't yell "go sit in the fucking corner!" to the kid. That will get you fired.

---+--- Mental health clinics are really efficient at cleaning up human waste left behind in the lobby.

Knitting season is rapidly approaching & I have projects in mid-transit that need to be finished... who the hell knits during summer unless it's like, you know, your life or something? One project in particular needs completion & it's totally knitted up, it just needs to be sewn together. I hate sewing. I really, really do. It's so... womanish. :D

Areas of infection include the facial region, legs, back of the legs, buttocks, and genital area.

Areas of infection include the facial region, legs, back of the legs, buttocks, and genital area. The best method for diagnosing genital herpes is a viral culture test taken from an active sore as soon as possible after the sore appears. Transmission is caused by close oral, anal, or genital contact, including intercourse, masturbation, and kissing, which allows for the transfer of bodily fluids. If you have herpes you should be aware that you are not alone, one in six adults have genital herpes. This virus in its dormant state hides in the nerves at the base of the spine and outbreaks are usually contained to the genital area.

Both types look nearly identical when viewed with a powerful microscope and both types can infect both the mouth and the genital area, HSV-1 is most often responsible with cold sores and HSV-2 is most often responsible for genital herpes. A person infected with a cold sore can transmit the HSV-1 virus to a sex partner's genital area during oral sex or become infected in the oral area by their partner's HSV-2 virus if their partner is already infected with HSV-2. There is some evidence that if you have cold sores or HSV1- you have a reduced risk of contracting genital HSV-2 type of herpes. In order to keep from spreading the virus you should refrain from kissing and performing oral sex if you have cold sores and refrain from all forms of contact if you have an active genital herpes outbreak. Two thirds of the people with genital herpes never know that they have it.

Those most at risk for genital herpes are those who have multiple sexual partners and among this group those who do not use condoms are at the highest risk ofall. As much as 25% of the adult population has genital herpes80% to 90% of the population has HSV-1 (cold sores / fever blisters)75% of those infected with genital herpes do not know itMale to male transfer of HSV-2 is the most efficient transmission routeMale to female transmission is more efficient than female to male1 in 5 adult males has HSV-21 in 4 adult females has HSV-2There are approximately 1 million new cases of HSV-2 in the US annuallyIs Chickenpox (Varicella) a form of Herpes. Living with genital herpes as a chronic health condition is a relatively straightforward process. The message of this paper is that through some basic education and awareness, people with genital herpes can feel more at peace with the condition as they achieve excellent control of the disease, avoid spreading it elsewhere on the body, prevent family members from catching it, and significantly lower the risk of transmitting the infection to their partner.

The natural course of genital herpes seems to be one of getting better with age. Thus the reduction of stress can definitely benefit the individual with genital herpes (see the section on Stress below). It is known that patients benefit from a "whole life" approach to managing genital herpes. Thus people with genital HSV should consider being on antiviral medication if they are in intimate relationships.

The Princess Bride; a strange book, but extremely witty and comedic.

The Princess Bride; a strange book, but extremely witty and comedic.

The story is told as if written by an S. Morgenstern of an equally fictional land, which Goldman has 'edited' for the good parts. Those who've seen the film will be familiar with the premise - a father reading to bedbound son (editing for excitement) a tale of excitement and miracles.

Goldman works over a lot of thinking amid his hilarity. The concepts of happy endings, narrative imperative, exaggeration, love, skill and time. If its fairytale preachy, it does it with style, and ultimately comes out like Voltaire's Candide: the concept that the fast must get old, good looks fade, arguments must arise among lovers and we all must, in time, tend our own gardens.

In other lit interest, after listening to the podiobook Ancestor by Scott Sigler I've been listening to some of his other works. I have listened to Earthcore, am listening to Rookie, will listen to Infected and am eagerly awaiting Earthcore 2 : Mt. Fitzroy.

Much like J C Hutchins, he has a talent for seizing on the known, the unknown, the barely conceivable and entirely inconceivable. Also, there is a lot of death, blood, bloody death, deathy blood, all of which coming from the blindspot. Kicking it Stephen King style, the violence is debilitatingly detialed and unpredictable, which is where the real horror comes from.

I'm liking Rookie so far. Its different to Earthcore and Ancestor ( which were monster killers chasing widowers who worked for corporations ) and, quite scarily, nobody has died in 12 episodes. Given that Sigler usually gets in a slaughter or explosion in by chapter 2, this is unsettling. There can only be a massacre on the horizon.

Its still quite violent of course. Its Sigler. And it is about football.

Its the American kind, but on other worlds, played by their inhabitants. I know that sounds terrible, but Sigler seems to be making it not only work, but bloom. Think Remember the Titans meets Star Trek. Usually trying to follow football terms makes me want to gnaw of my own arm, and thats when I can see them on screen. Sigler, however, has succeeded thus far at making come alive as a sport, rather than the usual thing of necessity, happy incident, a montage of the team winning, a bad incident, a montage of the team losing, a near victory, then a hooray.

As with all podcasters, he uses tech to spread the word - blogs, second life, podsafe bands, bonus shows, cross promotion, facebook, etc. The print transition continues, the books becoming available as Sigler has seized a highly loyal fanbase. Much like Mur Lafferty's impending publicated Playing for Keeps and Matthew Wayne Selznick's Brave Men Run, a podcasted work doesn't seem to compromise the print work, but rather creates a fanbase waiting for it such as when Sigler's print Ancestor came out on April 1st and reached 7th on Amazon's top bought on that day, by co-ordinated fan power. As with all podcasters, fans become street team promoters, creators of original/complimentary content in the visual and tech arenas. The tight fan community is mirrored in the creator community with seemingly every podcaster reading 'previously on rookie', interviewing sigler, doing promos and playing a first chapter or two in their shows.

A new round of SQL injection attacks has infected millions of web pages belonging to businesses and government agencies, including those that belong to the National Institutes of Health and Education Department in the US and the UK Trade & Investment.

This search shows at least 1.45 million infected pages and queries here and here out some of the US and UK government websites that have been hit by the attack. Not exactly reassuring to know that government-run websites are open to such a basic attack.

We strongly recommend not clicking on the infected sites unless you know what you're doing. Punters unfortunate to land on infected pages that are still live can wind up at sites "where a CGI script starts the road of pain," according to this post from Sans.

SQL injections take advantage of web developers who write applications that accept user-supplied data without inspecting it for malicious characters. The input is usually entered into search boxes or other fields that interact with the site's SQL database. Commands in the entered data instruct the website to add links that redirect visitors to websites under the control of attackers.

We've said it before, but it bears repeating: Given the prevalence of pages from supposedly reputable organizations that threaten their users, Firefox using the NoScript extension is an effective, but by no means perfect, measure to insulate yourself against these attacks.

Will Smith, the long-heralded king of holiday box-office glory attempts to do so again with “I

Will Smith, the long-heralded king of holiday box-office glory attempts to do so again with "I Am Legend." I'd heard this one was a stinker, in fact I was told to read the book first - as its much better. This I can't back up, but it might be interesting to read - I guess there's some Christian moral things going on within it. But I digress, because we're talking about a movie here. Clearly "I Am Legend" builds off our continuing fears of a terrorist attack; where one single event serves to effectively destroy everything. Here its a mutated version of the measles virus; because getting the measles wasn't bad enough as-is. Somehow a military Colonel Robert Neville (Smith) is involved and is immune to said virus. He races to save his family, and we all know they're going to die, which they indeed do. Granted this is all told to us in oddly placed flashbacks. Its only one of many hints that someone didn't think too hard on presentation.

The film opens with a news report, segueing into Neville hunting with his dog Sam. And by hunting I mean pointing a gun out of a car chasing deer. Having setup some super-virus meant to cure cancer the sudden shift isn't welcome, and things only go down hill. We're not immediately told why Neville wishes to abandon the streets when night falls - "infected" people roam the streets. Sadly, these aren't the scary and eerily realistic "infected" of "28 Days Later." Instead they're cheap digital models, none of which seem scary at all. I'd have rather seen the live-action version of the acting, as it might have presented more scare-factor and emotion. No, were shown a group of people who have forgone all signs of humanity, only to discover that they can in fact think (check the Wiki for info on the alternate version). This seems somewhat strange as Neville himself talks to his dog, to mannequins setup around a DVD store, and records his experiments and day-to-day activities into a video camera - for someone to find.

Admittedly the film is halfway decent up until the latter part of the middle and the film's conclusion. Neville loses Sam (who didn't see that coming?) and somehow gets rescued by two other survivors. Their sudden appearance seems to counter the entire thinking of the movie, and its never explained well. The woman, Anna (Alice Braga) explains that God showed her the way. In addition to this the film's ending somehow breathes a certain amount of humanity into the "infected." The sloppiness doesn't stop - the film's conclusion is so hope-filled with optimism that its somewhat sick. Its a nice-and-tidy ending that neither solves nor answers anything; only seeking to add more mystery.

Had the movie actually tried to humanize its "infected" co-stars we could've seen them as desperate people merely trying to survive. Furthermore almost no solid background is given, which could've easily been done with a voice-over (or even video recording) of Neville's. New Yorks state of decay is amazingly fast, seeming to envelop everything in sight within three years. Maybe I was expecting too much from the film, or maybe its flaws were just so glaringly bad that I couldn't ignore them. To Smith's credit however, his acting is pretty good - and he portrays the conflicted Robert Neville quite well. At times its heart-breaking to see a man so utterly alone, reduced to talking to people he knows aren't real. He bides his time seeking food, discovering the chaos and loss wrought by the virus, and attempting to retain a "normal" life. Maybe the movie should've focused more on that aspect.

Having not read the source material I can't really comment on how the novel describes things. What I can say is that there's enough within "I Am Legend" to signal a good movie, only it fails in the delivery process. The package got sent well enough, but somewhere along the line it got damaged.

Back in 1986, before men were allowed to cry or women were allowed to wear trousers, people used to dress their emotional effusion behind synthesisers, dual-layered harmonies and echo-reverb. Though the music of the 80s may sound overly felicitous, or even crass in its gushing, a closer inspection leads us to think that, behind the specious happiness of the booming economies and abundance of the times, people's hearts were still breaking, some went without and yet others had little in between.

As a child of the 80s I still feel that tingle down my spine when I hear the wail of a guitar against a synthesised wall of noise. I know it's not cool to say that, but it's true. When I hear those empty keys of those piano melodies like soliloquy it transports me back to the solipsism of childhood bedrooms in front of old TV shows or the crackle and fuzz of a tape player. Most 80s music seemed to have a nostalgia for the future and, now that we're living in it, that nostalgia can only be for some sort of dream world. We went off track somewhere.

The Hits 5 compilation is one that we used to have when I was a kid. It was released in 1986, meaning that I must have been around four when it came out. We had it on tape and used to listen to it in the car on long journeys. I can remember listening to it on my first tape player, thinking that this is what the world was really like. Though this isn't the full compilation (I couldn't find all the tracks on the Internet), it has enough to give you the general gist of the thing and maybe help you remember a thing or two about where you might have come from.

I broke down yesterday, and made an appointment to see the doctor. I cant even describe how much pa

I broke down yesterday, and made an appointment to see the doctor. I cant even describe how much pain I was in, it was immense none the less. I would elevate my leg, which would make it feel much better, but once I lowered my foot the pain came shooting back, so bad, that I couldn't even walk on that foot.

I Googled how to take care of wounds and burns, and I couldn't find a single straight answer, I read that I should cover it, use Neosporin, use rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, saline washes, soap; and then of course I read in other places, that I shouldn't do any of those. I tried all of them over the past 4 days, and none of them seemed to help, the pain just got worse, and my ankle and foot had gotten really swollen.

I sucked up my pride, and got into the doctor the same day. Of course, being in a small town, the nurse looked at me like I was nuts after I explained what I was doing, and looked even more shocked when I showed her my sorry excuse for an ankle. After a very long two hours of sitting in the doctors office waiting for second opinions on what to do, I was given a few prescriptions...and get to go back for another visit this Thursday.

$130.00 worth of prescription drugs later...

Silver Sulfadiazine 1% (Topical Antibiotic for burns)

Levaquin 500mg (Oral Antibiotic)

Darvocet (Pain reliever)

The doctor covered by tattoo with silver sulfa and bandaged it, so I wasn't able to get a picture of what my tattoo looked like right before using the prescription ointment, but I will keep on blogging the healing process. Just now, keep in mind for the next 7 days I'm on prescriptions. I will try to take pictures everyday, to see what kind of impact the prescriptions may have.

***One Day After Doctors Visit

(Silver Sulfa/Once a Day, Levaquin/Once a Day, Pain Relievers-As Needed)

The Nurse made it very clear that this is going to probably scar terribly. I am going to stay optimistic about it. Funny thing was she asked my if I knew how to post information on the Internet, she said that I really should warn people about the dangers of using Nuviderm...Ha. I am one step ahead of that!

I got to thinking, everyone I have talked to had a lot of trouble during their second application. I honestly haven't talked to anyone that was on their third or so application, since they all stopped after their second application. I have a feeling that treating the same area twice or more times, is just too much trauma for the skin to handle. I don't know if maybe waiting twice as long in between applications would help that or not.

On my previous post 'L' commented on using colloidal silver bandages; No one in town carries those here, but I think that is a great recommendation for anyone whose in the healing process. I would have to also agree, that 50% is way to strong. I used 46% this last time, and I'm really regretting that. I would definitely recommend using a lower strength...I would personally rather have to do many weak applications, than go through this mess again.

And to think the thought of *hmmm a facial peel might be nice* crossed my mind when I was researching TCA before I purchased nuviderm. I am SO glad that was just merely a thought...Can you imagine putting 12-30% strength on your face...It makes me cringe just thinking about it!

I almost forgot. What would this post be without a nasty bandage picture? My tattoo is still oozing.

***Bandage after day one of using Silver Sulfa. The discharge color is orange/brown.

Second Application @18 Days

This is so gross! I am having a really hard time to get the treated area to heal. The outside, the arm and a little bit of the head of the fairy has scabbed, but everything else is basically an open wound. This hurts REALLY bad. I have been ever increasingly concerned about infection, so last night I rinsed it with saline, and put Betadine on it (the brownish tint to my skin). Its really hard to keep it covered because the bandage will stick to the wound, even when I 'tent' the bandage, this really hurts too because than I have to rip off the bandage.

Now, this may be a good thing. This is pretty gross too! When I remove my bandages I have been noticing that the color has been draining out of the area.

This is a typical bandage. As you can see there is black and orange in it. Sorry, I know this is so gross. But, if anyone else is going through this, I think it is beneficial to post EVERYTHING that is going on during my use of Nuviderm. There is less color to my tattoo at this point, I just really need the area to start healing up, or I may have to go to the doctor. I think I'll give it another week or two (I don't have health insurance, so doctor visits are very last on my agenda).

by: MICHAEL CHEUNG

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has declared it safe to eat tomatoes again, lifting its salmonella warning amid signs that the record outbreak may finally be slowing.

The FDA is still warning that the people most at risk for salmonella - including the elderly and people with weak immune systems - should avoid consuming fresh jalapenos and serranos while it continues to investigate the cause of the salmonella outbreak, which now has sickened 1,220 people in 42 states since mid-April.

However, the announcement, coming after the tomato industry lost more than $100 million in profits, doesn't mean that tomatoes harvested in the spring were safe. According to Dr. David Acheson, the Food and Drug Administration's food safety chief, it just means that the tomatoes in fields and stores today are safe to eat.

"This is not saying that anybody was absolved. We're...informing consumers that tomatoes that are currently in stores and coming on to the market - domestic and imported - are okay," said Dr. Acheson.

In the beginning of the salmonella outbreak, there was good evidence linking certain raw tomatoes to the sick, stressed Dr. Acheson. However, inspectors failed to find the outbreak strain of salmonella on any tomato farms, not even in Florida or Mexico, the places where the salmonella had originally thought to have originated from.

As the outbreak stretched into last month, more evidence emerged against fresh jalapenos - and the FDA is devoting its efforts to investigating that now. The agency sent inspectors to a Mexican packing house that supplied peppers linked to a cluster of those illnesses. Fresh cilantro is also suspected.

There are signs that the outbreak is slowing, said Dr. Robert Tauxe of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Between April and mid-May, illnesses steadily rose. Between May 20 and June 10, the outbreak hit a plateau, with about 33 people a day becoming ill. From June 11 to June 20, that dropped to 19 people a day.

Salmonella can lead to infections involving diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps and sometimes a low-grade fever. In most cases, an infected person will recover within a week without medicine simply by staying hydrated, doctors have said.

Opinion

by: MICHAEL CHEUNG

Of course, it's a good thing that the salmonella outbreak seems to be waning. However, the FDA is obviously under tremendous pressure, both from the tomato industry and from consumers. I wouldn't be surprised if the FDA might have made this announcement a bit hastier than it normally would have.

But whether or not this announcement is correct, there still remains the problem of consumers. Will the tomato industry manage to convince supermarket shoppers that its produce is safe to eat? Many Americans doubtless will think twice about putting that tomato in their baskets, regardless of what the FDA says.

Campaña de Panda, Infected or not?

A FORMER chef, HIV-positive since 1999, kept mum about carrying the Aids virus when he gave oral sex to a teenager last September.

Chan Mun Chiong, 43, also asked the 16-year-old for anal sex but was rebuffed.

Undeterred, he trailed the boy, who approached a security officer for help.

Luckily, the teenager has escaped being infected.

Yesterday, Chan became the first HIV-infected person to be punished for engaging in sexual activity without first telling his partner of the risk of catching the infection or getting his voluntary consent to be exposed to the risk.

He had pleaded guilty.

Principal District Judge Bala Reddy handed him a year-long jail term, saying that his trailing the teenager compounded the crime.

The judge added that the sentence was a deterrent one, meant to signal the law's intolerance for those who manipulated the young and impressionable for their perverse sexual needs.

But he warned future offenders that the penalties for this offence were beefed up last month: They now stand to be fined up to $50,000 and jailed up to 10 years.

Chan was therefore the first and the last person to face the old maximum penalties of a $10,000 fine or a two-year jail term, or both.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Royce Wee told the court that last Sept 15, Chan was in one of the cubicles in the men's toilet on the second floor of Northpoint Shopping Centre in Yishun, and the boy in the cubicle next to his.

Chan initiated the sexual encounter with some hand signals under the cubicle partition.

The pair then went to another men's toilet a floor up. There, in the cubicle for the disabled, he performed oral sex on the boy.

After that Chan asked the victim to turn around, but he refused. Chan persisted but the boy again refused. The victim told him to get out of the cubicle.

Angry, Chan left but followed the victim around the shopping centre. The victim became worried and approached a security officer for help.

DPP Wee said the boy regretted what had happened; his parents no longer speak to him.

Chan, who was unrepresented, said he was sorry and that he has been out of a job since the incident.

DPP Wee told the court that Chan had committed a serious and reprehensible offence; the fact that his victim was young and vulnerable was an aggravating factor.

Noting that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) was mainly spread here through unprotected sex with an infected person, the DPP added: 'Indeed, the stated objective of the said amendments is to send a strong message that no one has a right to put others at risk through his irresponsible behaviour.'

The first HIV-positive case emerged here in 1985. As at last year, some 3,300 people had picked up the virus.

Health Minister Khaw Boon Wan told Parliament last year that HIV remained a problem and that the number of infections was still on the rise.

In 2001, 237 new cases were logged. This almost doubled to 422 last year.
