"This week when Roku founder and CEO, Anthony Wood, told a packed audience at the Streaming Media West conference all about his companies plans to expand onwards and upwards.

Wired reports that Wood announced:

“We’re opening up the platform to anyone who wants to put their video service on this box,”

“We’re going to release the software developer kit, so anyone can publish any channel, and users can access web content on their TVs.”

Conclusions

Wood, speaking during his keynote to the conference, refused to give a time line for this new strategy, but he did state that the company wouldn’t be changing its business model (making money from the hardware), or altering its relationship with Netflix.

This is brilliant news for existing Roku owners as well as mainstream consumers who are looking in to buying an Internet streaming set-top box.

It will be interesting to see which content providers Roku can now sign up, with the three companies already mentioned surely the natural primary targets."

The Roku box which does include HDMI ... connects directly to your TV without any connection to your PC.  Won't be long before we can all watch Hulu and Netflix and everything thru this simple inexpensive and easy to use TV set top box.

tuesday was a pretty crazy day, especially at work where i spent the first half of my day trying to get into a mercedes who's battery had died and the keys would not open the door mechanically. then once i got it open i had to get the damn thing started. what a morning.

got a bunch of work done, i suppose.

definitely did not mow the lawn when i got home, first off i didn't stop to get the gas and secondly, its damn cold! i did take my pup on a car ride with me to wegmans haha. i did a little bit of my workout, it seems tha that there may be too much focus on the abdomen area that and the fact that i put pull-up's and chin-up's right after one another. i'll have to fix that.

Why pay for cable?

i have not always been so frugal. this time last year i had a different job. at this job i made, roughly, double what i am making now. if you have read any of my past posts you will know that since that time last year lost a house, a car and a lot of money. when i moved out of my house to the place where i am currently i could not believe the amount of stuff that i had. expensive stuff, items that i bought at one point because i wanted them and never used them again. even things for my car(s), i would buy parts, add on's and never do anything with them. i was amazed at how willy nilly i was able to spend money.

now, i am back to how i was before i had that job, im frugal, sure almost cheap at times. but i survive =)

my biggest beef was the amount of money i spent on entertainment, not even going out to dinner or that king of stuff, but on the TV, the cable, the high definition cable, the high definition DVR, the surround sound, the internet and the list goes on. some of those things i still have like the TV, the surround sound, i enjoy them. but the cable...that had to go. the bill was roughly $160 a MONTH. just to watch TV shows and get online, absolutely insane. since then i have been on a mission to find sources on line to watch tv sitcoms, movies, documentaries and well you get the point. i've got a few sites that i frequent, so i thought i would share my sites :

CBS - great site, pretty good player. as with all Network sites there are commercials, but worth it IMO. i watch Numb3rs, The Mentalist and Two and a Half Men, but theres plently more on there. just make sure when you click on your series and it displays the videos, click on Full Episode. also, i just checked out the site and today (10/08/08) they do not seem to have a huge deal of Full Episodes, im pretty sure over the weekend they had a larger selection, so check back often

Fox - they had a terrible player but thankfully they ditched it and have something a little better. it has a great full screen mode, however you can't advance or rewind while in full screen. i enjoy Bones and House, and recently have started to watch the show Fringe, the 1st episode anyhow, it seems to have help my attention thus far. the great thing is that they offer a wide range of shows in HD

NBC - i will say that i really do not frequent the NBC site all that much. i recently started watching the show Chuck, but i think that was on a different site. today, as i look at their page i must say, i am a little impressed with their selection. i checked out the show America's Toughest Jobs and although i don't care much for the 'reality shows' the player was pretty decent.

ABC - i watch nothing on this site. i tried to check out the player but i needed to install a plug-in and i cannot on this computer.

FX - another site that i do not watch any shows on, however, my brother tells me that the show Always Sunny in Philadelphia is hillarious, so i will probably start to visit here more often. plus it has some other good shows like Thats 70's Show, The Bernie Mac Show and one i haven't seen in a while Spin City. i was able to get their player installed and it looks like its the same one as Fox uses. fantastic i say!

well, upon further investigation i have to say i take back what i said about Hulu.  it has been a while since ive visited the site, im not sure if it has changed or not, but i will say they have a great selection, a great video player, and great quality.  Hulu, thank you.

Project Free TV - i use this site daily. the links are almost always accurate. some of them are not the best quality, but the selection is unmatched. mostly here i watch sitcoms, however they offer movies as well and seem to work rather well.

i've got a few more sites but they are bookmarked on my PC, ill try to update this post. also, i thought it would be important to mention that my computer has dual monitors, my one monitor is on my desk, a small 17" LCD and the other is mounted on a wall and is a LG 37" LCD TV hooked up via HDMI; making it much easier to watch TV when the computer serves as the center of entertainment for my daily life; DSL where i am is 30$ a month. a very far cry from 160$ and i had to sacrifice little to nothing.
