So a chef friend of ours invited us to participate in restaurant week last night by visiting Jasper's Austin. Aside from the drive in traffic up to the Domain, it was a very pleasant evening. I hadn't been to Jasper's before and while the inside felt a bit more high end than the 'Backyard' idea, the food did indeed present itself as gourmet backyard. Don't get me wrong, the interior was very nicely decorated, I just felt it didn't quite match their theme of cuisine. Since it was $25 for three courses, I had the prosciutto wrapped shrimp and grits (which was ridiculous good), the Pecan Crusted Rainbow Trout with Sweet Potatoes (which was ok, a bit bland) and the Stone Fruit Buckle w/Texas peaches for dessert. Jason had the crab cakes (which were ok), the ribs (which were so tender and delicious), and the dark chocolate cake w/mini vanilla malt (which was yummy). Apparently their normal menu doesn't have a single entree item on it below $25, so I felt pretty good about getting three items for $25. I would not feel ok about paying for the entrees at the normal price - I don't think the food is worth those prices. For what it was, I'm not sure that I would be jumping at the bit to go back (like I do with Fino), but if restaurant week rolls around again and we end up at in the vicinity of the Domain, I wouldn't mind paying $25 again for another of their three courses.

Also, about Restaurant Week - according to my chef friend, this is the 'preliminary' restaurant week here in Austin with the nice restaurants in town. There will be another one in October that will be announced in September with the EXTREMELY high end restaurants. Not sure if it will still be $25. . . but even it's it's $35 for three courses, I'd go just to eat at some of the restaurants that are otherwise saved for very special occasions.

Restaurant week … all the other cities have them, and I earlier this year I wrote about rumors

Restaurant week ... all the other cities have them, and I earlier this year I wrote about rumors of an Austin Restaurant Week in October. Well, KGSR has apparently beaten Rare magazine to the punch, as the radio station that brings us free live music events Blues on the Green, Unplugged at the Grove, and Live on the Lake is delving into the food world with its Restaurant Week, presented by the Texas Beef Council and benefiting Kids Cafe. It runs August 11-18.

The Restaurant Week menu showcases selected three-course meals for just $25 (excluding beverage, tax and tip). Some of the restaurants offer choices on the courses, some just offer a take-it-or-leave-it menu. The website has an interactive map that will bring up the restaurant's menu if you click on the red pinpoint.

it's hard to believe that our trip is half way over. we have definitely enjoyed ourselves will be back to this part of the country soon. the downstairs air conditioner froze up where the master bedroom is. it was a hot night. hopefully it will get fixed quickly.

day 5 highlights:

as usual, the boys woke up hours before the girls. we made breakfast tacos. good start to the day.

the boys headed out to the Grayhawk Golf Club. what a great time we had. it was hot, but golf in the desert is everything I imagined and more. hope to squeak in another round before we leave.

while the boys were golfing, the girls headed out for the favorite sport - shopping - at the Fashion Square Mall.

after golf and the mall, we headed back to the house for some time by the pool. anything to escape the mid-afternoon heat.

for dinner we headed to Jasper's Peak. it was happy hour with half priced appetizer's. we sampled: Gulf Crab Dip, Shrimp Canape, Deviled Eggs, Shrimp and Grits, Beignets, and Honey Barbecue Wings.

the kids "had" to get some Baskin-Robbins again after dinner.

back at the house we huddled in the cool of the upstairs and watched Jim Gaffigan videos on You Tube before calling it a night.

I saw Cursive tonight. Great show. They totally did not fit the stereotypical "look" of most bands in their genre, which was refreshing. Granted, Cursive has been playing for a lot longer than any of the trendy emo-pop bands you hear these days; in fact, they're probably somewhat to blame for that whole musical blight! As much as I should hate them for that, I can't... their music is just too damn good. I can't deny that I have a soft spot for older emo (i.e. before the clusterfuck) - bands like Cursive, (older) Jimmy Eat World, Sunny Day Real Estate, and Texas Is the Reason.

In other news, I decided this week (on a whim) to try my hand at designing skateboard decks. You would think that I don't have papers to write, assignments to grade, a film to finish, and plenty of other work to keep me busy... Actually, I think this could be an interesting design exercise, since it will force me to work with a very specific size and format and still be creative. Also, I've been wanting to try to do stencil art for quite awhile, and this seemed like an easier (more legitimate) option than vandalism. :P

Here are the first few I've done:

This one is based on my redesigned cover for Magnetic North. I decided to start out using designs I've already made just to see how they would translate into this medium.

This one is based on one of the t-shirts I designed for the Pelican Pub in St. Petersburg, FL, at the beginning of last year (which they still haven't printed...).

This design is primarily based on some of the visuals from Cory Arcangel's Data Diaries.

...and finally, my favorite one. I know this makes me kind of a pretentious fuck, but I couldn't help myself! I call it the "existential deck." Can you name everyone here? I'm still trying to figure out how to fit Dostoevsky in there without his face getting covered up by the trucks :D

I am currently reading a book by the name of “Heidegger's Topology: Being, Place, World”. Why topology when Heidegger's most famous book is “Being and Time”? Heidegger's notion of Being and his notions on philosophy imply a certain situatedness and site, and he was certainly aware of Jasper's work on the limit-situation, having been the first reviewer of “The Psychology of Worldviews”. I will post more on this topic and how it relates to the M/s situation as I assimilate the ideas therein with the work on the mathematical topology of Being by Alain Badiou.
